Ross Barton and Joe Tate: From acid attack to Debbie love triangle – here’s exactly why they hate each other

Last year saw the return of two popular characters to Emmerdale, as Ross and Joe made their way back. The two share some interesting history, too.

Ross Barton first arrived in Emmerdale in 2013. He left in 2018, before returning six years later.

Meanwhile, Joe Tate appeared in Emmerdale from his birth back in 1995. He left alongside his aunt Zoe in 2005 before returning as an adult in 2017. He too left in 2018, only to return again six years later.

During their over-lapping time in the village Ross and Joe came to blows on numerous occasions. Here we take a look at the history between the pair and why they’re not each other’s biggest cheerleaders.

    History with Debbie

Ross has a complicated history with Debbie Dingle. The two started having an affair while Debbie was engaged to Ross’ brother Pete.

Although Debbie ended the affair, Ross and Debbie continued to have a connection and she later asked him to move in.

Debbie left the village for a while, but upon her return, Ross once again attempted to start things up with her. However, this time she declined.

Meanwhile, Joe Tate arrived back in Emmerdale using the name Tom Waterhouse. ‘Tom’ seduced Debbie and gifted her a Bentley. He also bought Jacob’s Fold for her and her children Sarah and Jack to live in.

He later told Debbie the truth – that he was really Joseph Tate. Joe informed Debbie that she was just collateral damage in his bid for revenge against Charity, who he blamed for driving his dad Chris to suicide.

    History with Charity

The two men are also linked via Charity Dingle. After marrying Chris Tate in 2001, Charity became Joe’s stepmother.

After discovering that Charity was having an affair with Cain Dingle, he chucked her out. Knowing he only had months to live due to an incurable brain tumour, Chris poisoned himself in order to try and frame Charity for his murder.

Following Chris’s death, Charity went on to give birth to his son – Noah, making him Joe’s half-brother. When Joe returned in 2017, he still held a grudge and attempted to get revenge on Charity.

Ross, meanwhile, had a one night stand with Charity which resulted in the birth of Moses. Upon his return to the village last year, Ross made a move on Charity, proving he still has a soft spot for her.

    Acid attack

After Joe left Debbie jobless and homeless, Ross agreed to help Debbie. He agreed to act as a double agent and got himself a job as Joe’s driver.

However, when Joe discovered his duplicity, he fired Ross. Ross then stole one of Joe’s cars and drove back home. But he was unaware that Debbie had asked drug dealer Simon to mess Joe up.

In a case of mistaken identity, Simon doused Ross with acid.

Epic showdown in Emmerdale between Ross and Joe

Ross was convinced that Joe was behind the acid attack and vowed to get revenge. He took Graham Foster hostage and once Joe arrived, Ross told him he had a gun with a single bullet loaded – but he didn’t know when it would fire.

Ross then preceded to play his own version of Russian Roulette. Every time Joe refused to confess to throwing acid at Ross, Ross pulled the trigger.

In a bid to protect Debbie, Joe eventually confessed to the crime. However, a scuffle broke out and the men were horrified when they realised Debbie had walked in and been shot.

As Joe and Ross argued over who loved Debbie more, she was rushed to hospital and fortunately survived.

Ross and Joe are back in Emmerdale village

In 2024, Ross arrived back in Emmerdale first as part of Billy’s illegal boxing storyline. While Joe arrived on Christmas Eve when it was revealed he was behind the plan to get revenge on Kim Tate.

Upcoming scenes see Ross and Joe go head to head again. After Joe tries to get back into his half brother Noah’s good books again, Charity is adamant she doesn’t want Joe being close to her son.

Charity enlists Ross to put the scares on Joe. Ross’ threats obviously work and Joe backs out of taking Noah to a football match. But this is unlikely to be the end of it…

Last year, Emmerdale revealed that Ella (formally called Ruth) was a child killer. She took the life of her best friend Joanne in a jealous rage when they were both only 11 years old.

However, Ella served time for the crime and has repeatedly tried to turn her life around, but has often had to move due to being exposed.

Steph and Caleb are unaware of the truth (Credit: ITV)

What happened between Anthony and Ruby?

Ruby had been estranged from her parents for over 30 years. While it was assumed that this was due to their disapproval of Caleb, the truth was later revealed in a special flashback episode.

The special scenes saw a young Ruby in her bedroom on her 16th birthday. She was soon joined by Anthony, who brought her some cake.

Things soon took a vile turn as Anthony locked the bedroom door as Ruby watched on petrified. Ruby begged her father: “Please not again, please not today.” Making it clear that Anthony had been abusing his teenage daughter.

Recently on Emmerdale, Ruby confided in Chas that she was raped and therefore Caleb might not be Steph’s dad. She stopped short of telling Chas that her abuser was her own dad. However, she did agree to getting a DNA test so that she could know the truth once and for all.

  • Joe came back to Emmerdale to die, new fan theory predicts

Joe came back to Emmerdale to die, new fan theory predicts

Joe Tate made a surprise return to Emmerdale on Christmas Eve, but fans suspect there is a sad reason for why he came back.

Joe left the Dales in 2018 and he was presumed dead. He was later revealed to be alive and living abroad.

Last year he was unmasked as being the mystery man working with Kim Tate‘s financial advisor in a bid to bring her down. But fans believe he has really returned home to die.

    Joe Tate in Emmerdale

Joe is the son of Chris Tate and Rachel Hughes, and the half brother of Noah Dingle. His parents died when he was young, making his aunt Zoe Tate his legal guardian. Zoe, Joe and Zoe’s daughter Jean left the village in 2005.

He then returned as an adult 12 years later. At first he used a false name and started a relationship with Debbie Dingle as part of his revenge plan against Charity Dingle. Joe blamed Charity for driving his dad to suicide.

In 2018, it appeared as if Joe Tate had died after being punched by Cain Dingle and hitting his head. Graham put Joe into the boot of his car and later told Kim that Joe had been taken care of.

However, viewers saw Joe’s hand twitch. It was later revealed that Joe was not dead and was in fact living abroad off of Kim’s money.

Six years on, Joe has returned yet again. Still played by Ned Porteous, Joe made his big entrance on Christmas Eve. It was revealed that Joe was actually the one pulling the strings behind Will and Peter’s plans to bring down Kim.

Joe informed Kim that Will had been plotting behind her back. He also claimed that he and Peter had simply gone along with it as a joke to see how far Will would go.

After lying for Kim to the police about Will’s death, Joe appears to have his feet under the table at Home Farm. But fans are convinced there is more to his return after he was shown in pain, struggling to breathe and taking medication.

    Joe Tate death fan theory

Fans took to social media to speculate about why Joe needs the medication. Joe also caused concern in Monday’s episode when he asked for painkillers for a really bad headache.

One fan wrote on Instagram: “I’m beginning to wonder if Joe came back to Emmerdale to die?!?!? A headache is never just a headache on a soap.”

A second fan said: “I think Joe got what Chris had.” Joe’s dad Chris was diagnosed with an incurable brain tumour and he later took his own life. A third fan replied to the comment, writing: “I bet if Joe’s got a brain tumour like Chris, he will be terminal like Chris. He kills himself like Chris did, to frame Kim for his ‘murder’ for revenge like Chris did with Charity.”

Over on X, another fan asked: “What IS wrong with Joe? I’m worrying if it’s caused by the head injury he sustained when he left, or if it’s a family thing with his heart?”

  • Caleb and Ruby to both die this year after Romeo and Juliet clue, fan theory fears

Caleb and Ruby to both die this year after Romeo and Juliet clue, fan theory fears

Emmerdale fans are concerned that Caleb and Ruby could die following a comment about them being the modern day Romeo and Juliet.

In Monday’s episode (Monday, January 6) Caleb reminisced about he and Ruby having to sneak around. Now fans are worried that this could be a clue of what is to come.

Both Caleb and Ruby have proven to be popular characters since joining the ITV soap. But could the end be near for them?

Caleb and Ruby danced in the kitchen (Credit: ITV)

    What happened in Emmerdale?

Following the revelation that Anthony Fox sexually abused daughter Ruby when she was a teenage, there has been lots of hints that Steph might not be Caleb’s daughter.

In a recent episode of Emmerdale, Caleb Miligan once against spoke about the time Steph was conceived.

Playing Made of Stone by the Stone Roses, he grabbed Ruby as he told her “it’s our song”.

While Steph mocked her parents for listening to old music, Caleb informed her that the song was the soundtrack to her being here. “There we were, me and your mum, playing tunes like this and sneaking around. Hiding in corners and well several things lead to several other things,” he told a mortified Steph.

During this time, Anthony had made his way into the room and was watching on. Caleb spotted him and added: “And you know what? It was all to avoid the disapproval of someone not a million miles from here.”

Anthony then said: “I guess you were the modern day Romeo and Juliet,” with Caleb agreeing that yes they were.

Emmerdale Fan theory predicts sad ending for Caleb and Ruby

Following the episode, a fan took to social media to question if there was a deeper meaning to the Romeo and Juliet comment.

“Erm ‘Modern day Romeo & Juliet’ comment in tonight’s Emmerdale… that better not be a hint to Caleb and Ruby both dying later this year. Ruby is one of the best things to happen to Emmerdale in a long time, so I’ll be raging,” they wrote on X.

Another fan agreed and added: “Well we know from the flashforword, Caleb will be in hospital and at death’s door.”

Could this theory become a reality?

  • Will is definitely dead – all the evidence as fans refuse to believe his demise is real

Will is definitely dead – all the evidence as fans refuse to believe his demise is real

Emmerdale fans are refusing to believe that Will Taylor is dead despite the evidence stacking up that the character has indeed passed away.

Will died after having a heart attack on Christmas Day. But fans are still convinced his death was a set up.

Along with his death being shown on screen, actor Dean Andrews has also posted a goodbye message. Yet this isn’t enough to convince some viewers that Will will not be returning to the soap.

Fans believe Will is still alive (Credit: ITV)

    Will dies in Emmerdale

In the lead up to his death, Will had been plotting with financial advisor Peter to bring Kim Tate down. Following Joe Tate’s surprise return, he revealed all to Kim about her husband’s plan.

Will tried to defend himself, but the Christmas Day episode ended with him clutching his chest. In the Boxing Day episode, Kim watched on sceptically, believing Will was faking the heart attack for sympathy.

It was only when Joe returned to Home Farm that Kim finally realised Will was in desperate need of medical attention and she started to help him.

Kim called 999 and followed instructions to try and save his life. Paramedics soon arrived, but they quickly realised nothing could be done and Will was pronounced dead.

Since then, Will’s daughter Dawn has suspected that Joe could be involved in her dad’s death. But following a call from the coroner, who confirmed Will died of natural causes, Dawn apologised to Joe.

However, scenes showing Will dead on the floor and the coroner’s report are still not enough to convince some fans that Will isn’t coming back.

    Dean Taylor shares exit message

Following some speculation that Will is still alive, actor Dean Andrews posted a video on Instagram to shut down the fan theory.

“Hi everyone – Dean Andrews here,” he said.

“I just wanted to come on to thank everybody that has sent messages regarding my departure from Emmerdale. There was a little conjecture as to whether Will was dead – he is dead, he’s gone. I’ve been left for around seven or eight weeks.

“I’d been there for around five-and-a-half years, and in that [time] I worked with some really lovely people – some amazing crew and my little family along the way have always been lovely to work with so I thoroughly enjoyed it. But it’s time to move on, and move on we shall.”

Fans refuse to believe Will is dead

Despite the death being shown on screen, including paramedics declaring Will dead, and the actor’s goodbye message, fans still believe there is a twist.

After Dawn spoke to the coroner on the phone, fans took to social media to claim the call had been fake.

“I bet it wasn’t the coroner on the phone,” said one fan, while another added: “I bet he is alive and it was all a set up.”

A third fan said: “Will has definitely set his death up with Joe, they are going to wreak havoc in Home Farm.”

A fourth fan said: “The thing I find odd is that in real life a post mortem would take a while as would dates for a funeral.”

“I don’t believe he is dead. I’ve said that all along. They are trying to set Kim up,” wrote a fifth fan. While a sixth simply said: “I smell a rat.”

What more evidence do fans need?!

What happened in Emmerdale tonight: Ruby completed a DNA test and Dawn made a discovery about her dad

In Emmerdale tonight, Ruby Fox-Miligan sent a DNA test off, so she’ll soon receive answers as to whether Caleb is Steph’s father or not.

Elsewhere, Mary confronted Laurel about her attachment to Marlon, much to Marlon’s dismay.

Here’s all that happened in Emmerdale tonight, Monday January 6.

Ruby with a DNA test in Emmerdale

    Ruby decided to find answers

Following her chat with Chas last week, Ruby ordered a DNA test. Tonight, she collected samples from Steph and Caleb in order to see if there’s a match.

First she pulled a strand of hair from Steph’s head. Steph shouted out ‘ow’ in surprise, with Ruby claiming it had been a grey hair. Seems like she could have gone about it in a less painful way, hairbrush maybe?

Later, Ruby asked Chas if perhaps she was better off living in ignorance. Chas encouraged her to go ahead with the plan. But while she was collecting Caleb’s sample, he walked in. Ruby quickly hid the clear plastic bag and pushed Caleb away when he tried to kiss her.

Caleb was shocked at Ruby’s reaction. She claimed she needed to talk to him about something. But she chickened out of telling him the truth and instead asked him if he would have stayed with her if she hadn’t got pregnant. He insisted he would have. Ruby then told Caleb he was the best thing to ever happen to her and he repeated the sentiment.

Later, Ruby posted the DNA kit and will soon have answers. However, she continued to worry about what the answer might be. Caleb played a song by the Stone Roses and told Steph it was the soundtrack to her being conceived… not awkward at all….

When Anthony walked in, Ruby looked visibly awkward as she continued to fret that Caleb isn’t Steph’s dad.

Dawn made a discovery in Emmerdale tonight

Following Will’s death from a heart attack over Christmas, Dawn has struggled to process her dad’s death.

Tonight, she got emotional when Jimmy brought over a box of Will’s stuff from the office. When Joe walked in, she sniped at him that the post mortem results would be out soon and they’d know the truth.

However, the coroner later called to share that there was no suspicious activity, leading to Dawn issuing an apology to Joe, who she had previously suspected of being involved in her dad’s death.

The camera then panned to the box of Will’s stuff, showing a memory stick. Dawn later found the memory stick, which had her name on it.

She put the memory stick into a computer, where Will appeared on the screen, saying that if she was watching it then it meant he was dead. He then shocked Dawn by adding: “It also means that Kim did it.”

Mary and Laurel talking in the Woolpack

    Mary stuck her nose in

Police called Marlon to inform him they’d made an arrest regarding the girl who was stabbed. Marlon relayed the information to Rhona, who snapped: “Forgive me for not jumping for joy that April hasn’t committed a violent crime.”

Mary told her daughter that she was being harsh on Marlon, before realising that Laurel is to blame for the tension between the couple.

Later in the pub, Marlon recruited Sarah to help him search for April again. Mary said he needed to give himself a break, but Marlon refused.

Rhona continued to be snappy with Marlon, leading to Mary approaching Laurel at the bar. She told Laurel that she had enough support already so she needs to leave Marlon alone.

Laurel walked out of the pub, while Marlon was angry at his mother-in-law’s interference.

    Elsewhere in Emmerdale tonight

Jacob continued to struggle as he burnt the candle at both ends. Early in the episode, his mum Leyla caught him leaving the house with his co-worker Sian. She invited Sian to stay for breakfast, but Jacob felt awkward and was eager to get Sian out of the village. Awkward.

Eric also spotted the pair, and while speaking to him, Sarah Sugden watched on – clearly upset that Jacob had moved on.

Later, Jacob looked stressed as he got on with his studying. His mum said he was burning the candle at both ends and needed to look after himself.

Also, in Emmerdale tonight, Cain Dingle looked unsettled upon discovering that Anthony would be staying in the village.
