Emmerdale fan scammed out of thousands believing she was in a relationship with Cain Dingle actor Jeff Hordley

Emmerdale fans have been conned out of thousands of pounds thanks to scammers posing as stars from the show, including Cain Dingle actor Jeff Hordley.

An investigation by ITV’s Tonight has revealed that cruel scammers are using increasingly inventive and sophisticated ways to trick unsuspecting people into handing over their cash. Often with the help of AI technology that means they can pose as soap stars.

In an episode that airs tonight (Thursday March 13), ITV’s Alex Beresford reveals the shocking scale of the issue.

It’s estimated that eight million scam videos will be shared this year online but only 1 in 10 adults in Britain feel confident they’d be able to tell the difference between a fake and the real thing.

    Romance scams

One unsuspecting Emmerdale fan fell victim to not one but two romance scams involving tricksters posing as actors from the show.

The daughter of the victim appears in ITV’s Tonight, talking about how traumatic it has been for her family. She wanted to remain anonymous so she’s known as Kirsty in the show.

In 2023 Kirsty’s mum was contacted by someone she thought was the Emmerdale actor Tony Audenshaw (who plays Bob Hope).

And it wasn’t long before Kirsty noticed a big change in her mum’s behaviour.

Tricked by someone posing as Cain Dingle actor Jeff Hordley

“I drove round to her house and there were some suitcases in the hallway, she told me that she’d fallen in love with somebody, he’s on Emmerdale,” Kirsty explains in the show. “I immediately got suspicious, she said he’s my soul mate, I know him really well.”

Kirsty’s mum was buying gift cards for the scammer, and eventually admitted she’d spent almost £20,000.

“It was £100 to £200 pounds at a time,” Kirsty says. “By December, it was £300 pounds a day. I asked ‘how much have you sent?’ She said ‘I think about 15,000 pounds’. I just gave her a big hug and said ‘it’s not true, you’ve been scammed’.”

    Not giving up

Luckily, Kirsty managed to get some of her mum’s money back. But it was just a year later when she noticed again that her mum was spending a lot of money in a short time.

“I phoned her and the first thing she said was: ‘it’s not a scam, he sent me videos of himself this time’.”

This time, Kirsty’s mum was communicating with a scammer who was posing as Cain Dingle actor Jeff Hordley. The fraudsters had managed to manipulate a video of Jeff using AI technology, so they could tailor his words and fool Kirsty’s mum.

Kirsty said “Mum felt really humiliated, she’s grieving really, it’s the loss of not just money, it’s the loss of what she thought was a relationship as well.”

There are many fake profiles of Emmerdale stars online. The team at Tonight found 90 profiles posing as Jeff Hordley!

Fake diet pills – and more!

And it’s not just romance scams that are doing the rounds. Another Emmerdale star, Lisa Riley, who plays Mandy Dingle, is also concerned about fraud. She told Tonight that she has a daily battle to prevent scammers using her image online to sell fake diet pills.

“They start talking under a fake account commenting on the storyline telling someone you’re beautiful, you’re gorgeous. And I’ll step in and say he’s not real! And this is happening more and more, they’re hunting vulnerable women,” says Lisa.

Coronation Street’s Dan Brocklebank agrees. “It’s happened so many times, people set up what they call my personal account or my official account and start to message people, and they’re being conned out of thousands of pounds,” he says.

  • Emmerdale writer behind Tom and Belle abuse storyline tried to ‘suffocate’ real-life girlfriend

Emmerdale writer behind Tom and Belle abuse storyline tried to ‘suffocate’ real-life girlfriend

Emmerdale bosses have said they are “shocked and appalled” after a former writer on the show appeared in court, having admitted assaulting his partner.

Martin Fustes pleaded guilty to the assault of his girlfriend, causing actual bodily harm, and an offence of intentional suffocation, which took place at the family home on January 27.

    Emmerdale writer prosecuted

Samantha Laws, prosecuting, told Hull Crown Court that the couple had been together for about 13 years at the time and were living with their children near Hull.

She said a row broke out between them when the couple were getting ready for bed. Fustes became verbally abusive and poked and prodded his girlfriend in the face and upper body with his fingers, keys and a vape. He also spat in her face.

Miss Laws added that Fustes stopped his girlfriend from leaving the bedroom and put both hands around her neck two or three times. Fustes also wrapped the woman’s dressing gown hood around her neck and dragged her back to the bed.

“He was repeatedly shoving and pushing her back to the bed,” Miss Laws told the court. “She attempted to escape. He placed his hands over her mouth and nose and stopped her ability to breathe. She could see stars.”

Miss Laws continued that the woman was able to escape through the front door of the house. “She began to run to the local police station but he quickly caught up with her and pleaded with her to return.” The woman did go home where there was more arguing and abuse.

The woman claimed in court that this assault was the culmination of more than 10 years of abuse. She said: “I thought I was going to die. I had no other option but to escape and run down the street.”

    “A serious incident”

In mitigation, Connor Stuart, said it was “a serious but isolated incident”. He said Fustes had no previous convictions and he had shown some degree of insight. “He has shown genuine remorse,” said Mr Stuart. “This is the last time that he will trouble these courts.”

According to IMDB, Fustes has written for Emmerdale since 2006. This also means he’s been involved in the recent storyline surrounding Belle Dingle‘s torment at the hands of her abusive husband, Tom King.

Fustes no longer writes for Emmerdale

“We were shocked and appalled to learn about the recent court case involving Emmerdale writer, Martin Fustes,” a spokesperson for Emmerdale/ITV said.

“Mr Fustes is a freelance writer. He has been informed that he will no longer be writing for Emmerdale. Everyone at ITV and Emmerdale abhors domestic abuse, which is why we have been highlighting the issue in a major storyline over the last 12 months.

“The Emmerdale production team were not aware of these charges against Mr Fustes until we were alerted over the weekend.”

Fustes was given a two-year suspended prison sentence. He also has to do 150 hours’ unpaid work, 15 days’ rehabilitation and a 26-session probation service domestic abuse programme. He was ordered to pay £2,000 compensation and £150 costs and he was given a ten-year restraining order.

Later, two heavies – Gary and Nick – arrive in the village looking for Eli. Craftily, they buy drinks for Lisa, Sam and Shadrach, hoping to get info from them about where Eli’s hiding out. Sam heads off to tell Eli someone’s looking for him and Eli starts to panic.

Steph’s too hasty in Classic Emmerdale

  • Emmerdale’s bad dads from Cain to Mackenzie and Marlon – who’s the worst of the lot?

Emmerdale’s bad dads from Cain to Mackenzie and Marlon – who’s the worst of the lot?

Emmerdale’s full of bad dads! Marlon is continuing to spiral next week as he struggles to deal with April’s return home after her ordeal on the streets. Marlon being Marlon, however, means he’s not listening to his daughter’s torment calmly and working out what she needs to make things better.

    Oh no.

Instead he’s following her, shouting at her, ignoring what she says, sleeping downstairs with the door locked so she can’t leave the house and generally making her life so miserable that we’re pretty sure she’ll scarper again at the first opportunity.

    Great fathering, Marlon. Smashing.

But when it comes to dads in Emmerdale, Marlon’s not even the worst of them. In fact, it’s actually easier to list the dads doing a good job in the village – Paddy, Billy – than the ones who are pretty rubbish.

So we thought we’d take a look at the worst of Emmerdale’s bad dads.

Nate attacks CAin on the boat
Nate and Cain’s relationship was fiery (Credit: ITV)

    Cain Dingle

He’s the obvious place to start because he is shocking at parenthood (and at marriage, and at being a brother, let’s be honest). Cain made a big sacrifice when he took the blame for Kyle shooting Al Chapman, though the truth came out eventually.

But since then it’s been downhill all the way. And right now, when young Kyle needs his dad’s support after the death of his mum Amy, Cain’s too busy moping around and feeling sorry for himself after cheating on Moira to be any proper use.

Then there’s little Isaac, who Cain barely notices, and can we talk about Nate? Whose last memory of his dad would be him attacking him in a rage after accusing him (wrongly this time, but to be fair, he was right about this the first time) of sleeping with his wife.

It’s no wonder daughter Debbie lives hundreds of miles away in Aberdeen, and granddaughter Sarah calls him ‘Grumpy’.

April and Ross talk in the graveyard
We love Ross and April’s friendship but he’s not doing a great job with Moses (Credit: ITV)

    Ross Barton

Ross Barton has shown himself to be fiercely protective of April and there’s no doubt he wore out his shoe leather traipsing the streets of Leeds when she was missing. But that protective nature doesn’t seem to extend to actually listening to April. Instead, like so many other Emmerdale men, he punches first and asks questions later. YAWN.

Ross has abandoned his stepson Seb to come to the village, and while he was adamant about building a relationship with his son Moses when he arrived, he doesn’t seem that bothered now. Possibly because poor Moses is scared stiff of his dad after he took him to an illegal boxing match. That’s definitely not in the parenting manuals.

Nicky and Caleb talk on Emmerdale
Caleb schemed with son Nicky to take down Kim (Credit: ITV)

    Caleb Dingle

Caleb’s children may be proper grown ups now, but that doesn’t seem to have stopped him being one of the worst dads in the village. Currently he’s letting daughter Steph get away with treating her vulnerable mother Ruby like dirt from the bottom of her shoe. While giving her a job and welcoming her into the home, of course. There are no consequences to her horrible behaviour. And yes we know the whole family dynamic is off kilter thanks to Anthony’s abuse of Ruby, but still – you can’t talk to people like that, Stephanie.

And what about Nicky? Caleb manipulated his son – who is gay by the way – into seducing young mum Gabby Thomas and then jilting her on their wedding day and breaking her heart. All because of some weird vendetta he had against Kim Tate who was once married to his dad, Frank Tate.

    Top dadding, Caleb. Well done.

    Charles Anderson looks brooding
Charles has a proper temper (Credit: ITV)

    Charles Anderson

Vicar Charles is dubbed Angry Anderson by fans online and we can see why. His default setting is shouting and losing his temper and no one pushed his buttons more than his wayward daughter Naomi. He stomped and sulked his way through their brief reconciliation when Naomi came to the village and then Naomi left for Australia. She didn’t even come back to see her dad when brother Ethan died.

David Metcalfe - aka Matthew Wolfenden -left Emmerdale last year (Credit: ITV)
David Metcalfe left Emmerdale last year and he’s not coming back – not even to support his son (Credit: ITV)

    David Metcalfe

It’s a bit of a cheat this one as David left the village a while ago. But his supposedly beloved son is currently grieving for his mum Leyla and David has just abandoned him to let him get on with it.

Jacob is young, and vulnerable and he’s coping with his mother’s death all by himself. He really needs his dad. But David’s too busy sulking that Jacob got together with his ex-girlfriend Victoria to think of that.

Luckily for Jacob, he’s got his grandad Eric Pollard by his side. Eric himself wasn’t the best dad, but he’s pulled it out of the bag when it comes to grandfatherhood.

    Chloe and Mackenzie
Mack showed his true colours in his manipulation of Chloe (Credit: ITV)

    Mackenzie Boyd

Overgrown toddler Mackenzie is another dad who’s explosive, handy with his fists, and very quick to centre his own needs above his child or their mother. He was borderline abusive to Chloe, who was a frightened young mum.

He did his best to frighten her into keeping the dad of her baby a secret, then changed his mind, then pretended he wanted to be with her, while he was still in love with Charity…

Wherever Chloe is now, we reckon she must still be reeling from everything that happened. While Mack is busy playing daddy to Moses instead.

Bob looks annoyed while wearing a silly camouflage jacket on Emmerdale (Credit: ITV/Composite: EI)
Daddy Hope thinks about all his other kids that he’s completely forgotten (Credit: ITV/Composite: EI)

    Bob Hope

There’s no doubt that Bob loves his daughter Cathy and he’s been very supportive of her since she lost her twin brother Heath – after a bumpy ride there for a while. It’s just a shame he seems to have forgotten all his other kids! Bob’s got loads of them. There’s Josh, Jamie, Carly and Roxy, plus former stepson Scott – who does occasionally get a mention.

All of Bob’s kids have been in the village at one time or another, but it’s definitely a case of out of sight, out of mind when it comes to Mr Hope’s parenting skills. We’d love to see one or more of Bob’s children return – that would keep him on his toes, no doubt about it!

  • Why did Moira change her mind, why won’t Marlon stop shouting and who WAS Amy? We’ve got a lot of questions about this week’s Emmerdale

Why did Moira change her mind, why won’t Marlon stop shouting and who WAS Amy? We’ve got a lot of questions about this week’s Emmerdale

This week’s Emmerdale review is basically just a list of questions. We’ve been left scratching our heads a bit after the week’s episodes. In fact, we’d say they’ve totally left us with more questions than we had at the start of the week.

It was a busy week in Emmerdale with two of the three funerals for the women who died in the limo crash. And those funerals were at the exact same time, which is the first of our many questions we’ve got this week.

Here is our long list of ‘Whhhhyyyy?’ in this week’s Emmerdale review.

Marlon attacks Dylan while April looks on in Emmerdale
Marlon’s not listening to April (Credit: ITV)

Emmerdale review: What is Marlon thinking?

Since April first ran away we’ve had a lot of questions about the way Marlon’s dealing with this whole thing. And never more than this week where he appears to have completely lost his marbles. He’s sleeping by the front door, he’s shouting, he’s absolutely not listening to anything April says.

We’re not sure that April’s life at home before she ran away was so bad that scratching an existence on the streets was a better option. But we’re starting to think it might be now.

And then there’s Dylan. Despite the fact that April has told Marlon and Ross 50 million times that Dylan helped her, they are treating him like scum. He’s a vulnerable teen – just like April. Why is no one helping him?

Marlon was sort of right when he told April it was too much for her to be helping Dylan through his recovery but the solution there would have been to get some proper help for Dylan. Maybe he could have had a word with Manpreet, perhaps. Rather than just shouting at April. Again.

Cain and Moira on the sofa
    Everything’s FINE now (Credit: ITV)

WHY the change of heart, Moira?

We have a lot of questions about this too. So. Many. Questions. Obviously the main one for weeks has been why Cain slept with Ruby in the first place.

But this week we are BAFFLED by Moira’s super-quick turnaround. Why did Moira suddenly change her mind? We’ve got whiplash from that U-turn.

Tracy steals money from the till

    Emmerdale review: Tracy’s a thief!

How on earth did Tracy manage to nick two grand from Eric?! Why hasn’t he noticed given his precarious financial situation? Why didn’t she go to Cain for help, or Vanessa? Or even Eric! Tracy’s better than this.

    Emmerdale review: Leyla Manpreet
Leyla discovered Manpreet’s secret (Credit: ITV)

    What was Manpreet thinking?

We’re glad Manpreet’s getting a story. But sexy pics, Manpreet? Really?

We are quite interested in who her blackmailer is though.

    Jacob at Leyla's funeral
    Poor Jacob (Credit: ITV)

    Leyla’s fabulous send-off

Leyla’s funeral was perfect. We loved how she’d written her own eulogy. We loved the gold coffin, and the pallbearers and the music choices. We really, really loved the fortune cookies. What a great touch. But it was a bit odd that it was in church – somewhere we’re not sure Leyla had ever been!

And it was really odd that it was at the same time as Amy’s funeral. Poor Eric had to choose between two women he’d genuinely loved. And of course he had to choose Leyla’s because he needed to support his grandson Jacob (do NOT get us started on how Jacob has been abandoned by the rest of his family just when he needs them the most)  but it can’t have been easy for him.

    Matty at Amy's funeral
Matty told us all sorts of things we didn’t know about Amy (Credit: ITV)

    Amy’s nature-based, animal loving funeral

Speaking of which, Amy’s funeral was… odd. Because it turns out we didn’t know much about Amy. At least, we didn’t before she died. But apparently she loved nature and walks in the woods, she loved animals, and she had a friend in Belfast who died.

We didn’t see any of that of course, when she was alive, but we know now because Matty told us at the funeral. Which is making us think that Amy was very underused on screen, and also that – whisper this – we won’t really miss her.

Vanessa and Tracy drink to Suzy
Thw women toasted Suzy (Credit: ITV)

    Emmerdale review: Who was Suzy?

In fact, we feel a similar way about Suzy and Vanessa. We hardly saw them together when Suzy was alive. We saw much more of Suzy and Mary’s growing friendship when Vanessa was away. So all the stuff Vanessa’s now telling us about how she was planning to propose and they were going to go to New York, and the details of their relationship are new to us.

Nate Robinson's body floats back down into the water and we can see the distinctive bracelet (Credit: ITV)
Will Matty remember what Amy told him? (Credit: ITV)

We’re not over the limo drama

Just to round off this week’s Emmerdale review, we want to say that we’re still reeling from the drama of Valentine’s Day.

We’re still a bit annoyed that THREE young women were killed in the limo crash. We still think Emmerdale feels unbalanced and too male. We are really, really going to miss Leyla who was just the most fabulous character.

And most of all we are DESPERATE for Matty to remember what Amy told him about seeing Nate’s body in the lake. Yes, we know he’s had a lot on. But come on, Matty! Get that grey matter working!

  • As Jacob looks set to become a dad, Emmerdale star Joe-Warren Plant admits: ‘This might be the kick Jacob needs’

As Jacob looks set to become a dad, Emmerdale star Joe-Warren Plant admits: ‘This might be the kick Jacob needs’

Jacob is in a bad place, according to Joe-Warren Plant, who plays the troubled med student in Emmerdale. The heartbreaking death of his mum Leyla has taken its toll. He’s lonely, isolated, working hard on his medical studies and generally burning the candle at both ends.

It’s a testing time for the wannabe doctor. So we caught up with Joe-Warren, who plays Jacob, to find out what’s going on with his alter ego.

Is Sarah the one for Jacob in Emmerdale?

One bright spot in Jacob’s life is Sarah – until this week when he cruelly rejects her just as she thinks she could be pregnant.

So is Jacob just lashing out under the stress of planning his mum’s funeral? Or has he decided Sarah isn’t the one for him after all?

“His feelings for Sarah are definitely genuine,” says Joe-Warren. “Over the last few weeks and months even he’s been struggling with his placement on A&E, he’s not got off to the best start there, but he does genuinely care about Sarah. It’s nice to see their relationship grow.”

    Jacob’s going off the rails

Though Jacob’s feelings are genuine, his behaviour this week doesn’t bode well for poor Sarah. He’s having trouble coping with Leyla’s death, he’s been sent home from the hospital because he’s finding it too hard, and so he meets up with new friend Rich to get drunk.

He even invites a load of random people from uni to a party at Leyla’s house. So is Rich trouble for Jacob?

“They have a lot in common, but with the pressures that the job brings it opens people up to coping mechanisms,” explains Joe-Warren.  “Jacob can be easily led. Rich is a good friend to Jacob, but he’s been taking them down the wrong path.”

Though when Jacob decides to throw a party,  it’s Rich who questions the wisdom of doing such a foolish thing the night before his mum’s funeral and at her house.

But Jacob’s hurt that his dad David – who owns the cottage – isn’t coming to the funeral and he doesn’t care.

“Jacob’s been having difficulties being authentic with his emotions,” says Joe-Warren. “He’s got a lot on his plate. he’s not the best at communicating, it’s eating away at him. He is burning the candle at both ends. But he’s got a good heart.”

    Baby blues?

Meanwhile, Sarah’s got worries of her own. She thinks she could be pregnant.

How would Jacob react if Sarah is expecting his baby?

“Obviously it would come as a shock,” Joe-Warren laughs. “I think if he asked himself if he’s ready to be a father he’d probably say no, but actually  it might be the turning point Jacob needs in his life. It might be the kick Jacob needs to get himself into a better position.”

Could a baby encourage Jacob to ditch the booze and make a go of things with Sarah?

“He’d really want to step up and do the things that he himself didn’t have growing up,” says Joe-Warren.

More drama to come for Jacob in Emmerdale says Joe-Warren Plant

It seems with Leyla’s death, Sarah’s possible pregnancy and Jacob’s medical training, Jacob’s got a lot to deal with. And he’s very isolated without his mum Leyla (played by Roxy Shahidi), or his dad David – who was played by Matthew Wolfenden – in the village.

And it’s not easy for Joe-Warren either! He’s played Jacob, alongside Roxy and Matthew since he was a child. He’s been in the show for 15 years – more than half his life.

“Now Matthew and Roxy have gone it’s heartbreaking,” he admits. “But it’s allowed me to work with other people. People I don’t usually have scenes with. It’s been a breath of fresh air really. It’s nice to see what dynamics Jacob has with different characters as well. Rather than being the son of Leyla, it’s nice to play something different.”

Luckily, there’s a family reunion on the horizon. “We’re due to go out for lunch very soon,” he says. “And me and Roxy went down to see Matthew in panto.”

And Joe-Warren says there’s a lot more drama in store for Jacob. “There’s lots more coming up,” he teases.

    We can’t wait!
