Anthony Fox is the latest in a line of evil Emmerdale characters to get their comeuppance after he was killed. The murder of Ruby’s abusive father is part of a huge whodunnit storyline, and although Aaron believes he dealt the fatal blow, some it doesn’t all add up to him being the killer.
We can’t be sorry to see Anthony go. He’s rotten to the core and quite possibily the vilest character to ever set foot in the Dales. His sick past has finally caught up with him. And he’s not the first Emmerdale character who got what was coming to them.
From Carl King to his nasty offspring Tom, here are nine other wicked ones who got their just desserts.
Tom King is now rotting in prison where he belongs (Credit: ITV)
Emmerdale characters that got their comeuppance: Tom King
Tom’s comeuppance felt like a very long coming after almost a year of witnessing his campaign of terror and abuse against Belle.
For months, fragile Belle suffered in silence as Tom physically, mentally and emotionally tortured her. He controlled her every move and continually gaslit Belle into believing it was her own fault. Tom spied on Belle through hidden cameras, tried to convince the locals she was mad and even faked Piper’s death in a cruel bid to cause distress.
After being pushed to the edge, Belle found the courage to report her husband’s crimes to the police. The discovery of crucial evidence led to Tom being arrested and put on trial.
On December 19, 2024, Emmerdale aired a format-breaking episode. Over an hour, it went back and forth between Tom and Belle giving evidence in court and the jury deliberating their verdict.
Tom put on a convincing performance, and the audience had to hold tight until the end to witness justice being served. We cheered along with the Dingles as Tom was found guilty on two counts and sentenced to three years in prison. As he was taken down, viewers heard the stories of real women who’d suffered the same abuse Belle had.
Carl was a violent bully who got his comeuppance (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)
Emmerdale characters that got their comeuppance: Carl King
No wonder Tom turned out the way he did, with such a narcissistic bully for a father.
Carl King entered the show as a typical arrogant womaniser, whose biggest crime was two-timing. But he graduated to full blown baddie status after murdering his dad, Tom Senior, in a gripping whodunit.
For six years Carl got away with his crime, which was ridiculous given that half the village knew what he’d done, including his own brothers. But his downfall came when he made an enemy of fellow psycho Cameron Murray.
Carl discovered Cameron was sleeping with his ex Chas Dingle and he didn’t want another man having her. He attempted to rape Chas in a jealous rage, but she fought back and knocked him out with a brick. Chas thought Carl was dead so she fled the scene. But he was still alive.
Cameron was the one who finished the job – and he smashed Carl’s skull in. Over eight million viewers tuned in to watch Carl’s comeuppance, which was part of the Emmerdale’s big 40th live episode.
Serial killer Meena is safely behind bars (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)
Meena Jutla
Mad Meena was deliciously evil and so much fun to watch, but the killing had to come to an end eventually. There wouldn’t have been anyone left in the village otherwise.
Meena had already claimed two victims before she even set foot in the Dales – her best friend Nadine, and her own father – but her lust for blood led her to kill again.
In total, the nutty nurse bumped off three villagers. She pushed Dr Liam’s teenage daughter Leanna off a bridge, bashed Ben Tucker’s brains out and left Andrea Tate to burn to death in a maze. All were calculated kills and Meena took sadistic delight in stalking her prey. She even got in the mood for murder by singing along to her favourite pop songs.
Meena attempted to kill Manpreet and Vinny, but Liam interrupted her plan. She went on the run and returned on Billy and Dawn‘s wedding day and held the couple at gunpoint. But the police weren’t far behind.
After being arrested, Meena stood trial and was found guilty. She’s serving 75 years in prison with no chance of release.
Cain was involved in one of the Emmerdale’s biggest whodunits (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)
Cain Dingle
In December 2011, village bad boy Cain found himself at the centre of a whodunnit, dubbed Judgement Day. The mechanic was attacked in the middle of the village by a mystery assailant and left for dead.
At that time Cain had fewer friends than enemies in the village. He’d destroyed John and Moira Barton’s marriage, impregnated 17-year-old Amy Wyatt and turned most of his family against him.
Six locals were in the frame for the crime, and the police were convinced Jai Sharma was their man. But in the end it turned out the least likely suspect, Zak, was their attacker. The Dingle patriarch decided his son needed to be taught a lesson for bringing disgrace to the family name.
Zak eventually ‘fessed up to what he’d done, and Cain (who had recovered by this point) forgave him.
Emma was pushed to her death off a viaduct (Credit: ITV)
Emmerdale characters that got their comeuppance: Emma Barton
Emma’s murderous past caught up with her in 2017 when she died after falling from the Hotten Bypass. But did she fall or was she pushed? That was the question on every fan’s lips.
She managed to convince her sons to give her another chance and Emma wormed her way back into James’s affections. But then Emma discovered James really loved Moira and she totally lost the plot.
Emma held James hostage in a remote cottage and tortured him. He managed to escape, but she pushed him over a motorway bridge, which led to the fatal Hotten Bypass Crash. The rampage continued as Emma abducted Moira’s baby boy Isaac then shot Finn dead in a confused state.
Hearing the news of her son’s death over the radio, traumatised Emma drove herself to the viaduct. She contemplated suicide and was seen falling, although it later transpired she’d been pushed to her death by Moira.
Cameron went out with a bang (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)
Cameron Murray
Unhinged Cameron Murray remains one of Emmerdale’s most iconic villains and his demise was nothing short of spectacular.
During his two year reign of terror, Cameron claimed the lives of three locals. His first victim was Carl King, who he bludgeoned to death during Emmerdale’s live 40th anniversary episode. In order to protect his secret, Cam claimed two more victims – farmhand Alex Moss and young mum Gennie Walker.
His crimes were discovered and Cameron was found guilty of triple murder and sent to prison. Months later he escaped jail and returned to the village for one final stand.
The dramatic seige took place in The Woolpack, where Cameron held a group of terrified locals hostage. Events reached a thrilling climax as Cameron attempted to drown former lover Chas in the pub’s flooded cellar. This time he wasn’t so lucky and ended up grabbing the live wire of an electric light bulb. He was killed instantly.
Pierce ended his days behind bars (Credit: ITV)
Emmerdale characters that got their comeuppance: Pierce Harris
Pierce Harris was introduced to the audience as the grieving widower of Paddy’s lover Tess. He grew close to Rhona and the pair embarked on a relationship.
Rhona hoped Pierce would be the one to mend her broken heart, but he turned out to be a monster. Behind closed doors, Pierce subjected Rhona to horrendous abuse and raped her on their wedding night.
She went to the police, reported the crime, and Pierce was sent to prison. After serving two years he was released and made his way back to the village. Still intent on controlling his ex, Pierce murdered Rhona’s boyfriend Graham Foster and kidnapped Vanessa Woodfield and her young son Johnny.
Rhona eventually outsmarted the villain by getting him to confess to Graham’s murder on tape. She then injected Pierce with a tranquilizer to hold him there until the police arrived to arrest him. Thanks to Rhona’s bravery, they had enough to charge Pierce and get him sent back inside. He ended up dying behind bars.
Craig turned out to be an evil rapist (Credit: ITV)
Emmerdale characters that got their comeuppance: Craig Reed
On first impressions, Lydia’s ex-boyfriend Craig seemed like a decent enough bloke. But he had a dark side.
He offered Lydia a cleaning job at his workplace, but started making creepy advances towards her. Then one night, Craig trapped Lydia inside his office, where he raped her.
Lydia suffered in silence for weeks afterwards before finding the courage to tell her family what had happened. From that moment on, Craig was a dead man.
In October 2023, Craig’s bloodied and bruised body was found in the middle of a field on Home Farm land. Every member of the Dingle family was in the frame for his murder. But flashback scenes revealed Craig’s killer wasn’t even human.
Although Craig was beaten black and blue by Sam, it Kim Tate’s horse, Ice, that finished the job. The creature got spooked and trampled Craig to death in front of Kim and Cain, who left the rapist to die a lonely painful death. Which was exactly what he deserved.
Evil Malone is now six feet under (Credit: ITV)
Emmerdale characters that got their comeuppance: DI Malone
DI Mark Malone is now six feet under in Home Farm soil. And we’re not sorry about it.
The bent copper came to Emmerdale in 2020. He was the former lover of Harriet Finch and the boss of a criminal network, who drug dealer Will Taylor worked for. So there were scores to settle.
From beginning to end, Malone caused nothing but trouble. He blackmailed Will, Cain and Billy into working for him, then launched a campaign of terror against Dawn. This culminated with Malone trying to convince Dawn to take a fatal overdose of heroin.
Harriet came to Dawn’s rescue and clonked Malone over the head with an ornament. She thought she’d killed him, but he came back to life and tried to attack them both. Dawn grabbed a gun and shot Malone three times. And this time he really was dead.
Dawn and Harriet initially buried their victim in the churchyard, before Will moved the body to a secluded place in the Home Farm estate.

Emmerdale have treated us to some cracking whodunnits over the years, drawing fans into the mystery and giving them the chance to play detective.
The latest crime we’re all trying to solve is who killed Anthony Fox? Ruby’s rapist dad was murdered just hours after his crimes became public knowledge. Right now it looks like Aaron Dingle beat him to death, but there are clues that’s not the whole story.
Anthony isn’t the only villain to have found themselves at the centre of a gripping whodunnit. Here we look back at those puzzling cases that kept us guessing until the big reveal…
Tom King was murdered on his wedding day (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)
Emmerdale best whodunnits: Who murdered Tom King?
Perhaps Emmerdale’s most famous whodunnit, Tom’s murder was the centre of the 2006 Christmas special.
The nasty King patriarch had just married the equally loathsome Rosemary Sinclair, but what should have been a day of celebration ended in disaster. While getting ready for the reception in his bedroom at Home Farm, Tom was approached by a mystery figure. An argument ensued, Tom was clobbered over the head with an ornament and pushed out of the window to his death.
There were 10 official suspects in the frame for the crime, including all three of Tom’s sons and his new bride. And in a soap first, Emmerdale gave fans the chance to play detective by launching an online game so they could gather clues.
After five months of keeping everyone guessing, Tom’s son Carl was unmasked as the killer. But instead of being carted off down the cop shop, Carl remained in the village. He’d got away with murder, but the soap gods always find a way to punish. In the end, Carl got his comeuppance when he was bumped off by serial killer Cameron Murray in 2012.
Cain was attacked by one of these six suspects (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)
Who attacked Cain Dingle?
In 2011, Emmerdale announced Cain Dingle would be attacked in a whodunnit, dubbed ‘Judgement Day’. The storyline made perfect sense as Cain was the most hated man in the Dales.
His affair with Moira had destroyed the Barton family, he’d got 17-year-old Amy Wyatt pregnant, made an enemy of Jai Sharma and managed to alienate his own family.
After a showdown one night in The Woolpack Cain was bludgeoned with a crowbar. He tried to escape, but was struck again over the head and left for dead. Moments later, Cameron Murray came across the scene of the crime and saw Jai standing over the body, his hands covered in Cain’s blood.
Cain was rushed to hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery for a clot on the brain. He came out of his coma and tried to frame Jai for the crime. Moira’s wronged husband John was also arrested, but then released due to a lack of evidence.
On January 5, 2012 – less than a month after the attack – Cain’s own dad Zak was revealed to be the perpetrator. Zak confessed he’d wanted to teach Cain a lesson for his continual bad behaviour and disgracing the Dingle name. Cain eventually forgave his father and agreed to drop the charges against Jai.
Robert’s ruthless behaviour caught up with him (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)
Emmerdale best whodunnits: Who shot Robert Sugden?
Ruthless Robert was another one who didn’t give a damn who he hurt. So it was only a matter of time before he ended up with a bullet in him.
In September 2015, Robert became public enemy number one after it was revealed he’d pushed Katie Sugden to her death. One of his haters took their revenge by gunning Rob down in the village.
Emmerdale added a twist to the tale by deciding to reveal the shooter in a special flashback episode, which aired the month later.
The clock was rewound and viewers discovered Robert’s adoptive brother, Andy was the culprit. He’d wanted Robert dead for what he did to Katie, but had paid Ross Barton to pull the trigger for him.
Emma Barton’s death turned out to be murder (Credit: ITV)
Who killed Emma Barton?
Killer nurse Emma Barton got her comeuppance when she was shoved off Hotten Viaduct in October 2017. The discovery of her body sparked a huge whodunnit, with lots of twists and turns along the way.
In the lead up to her death, Emma was spiraling out of control. The year before she’d pushed husband James off a bridge during the Hotten Bypass. She’d also accidentally killed her youngest son Finn and kidnapped Moira Dingle’s baby Isaac. Haunted by hallucinations of James, Emma drove herself to the viaduct to end it all.
First thoughts were that Emma had committed suicide, but it then became clear it was murder. There were many who had reason to want Emma gone, but only one who hated her enough to kill. And that one person was Moira.
The truth was revealed in flashback scenes, which were cleverly intertwined with present day. Moira confessed to the police that she’d pushed Emma, but escaped punishment after her son Adam managed to convince them he was the killer. He then fled the country as a fugitive.
Kim was pushed off a balcony back in 2018 (Credit: ITV)
Emmerdale best whodunnits: Who pushed Kim Tate?
Kim Tate’s dramatic return in 2018 was a night to remember after she got pushed off a balcony by an unknown culprit.
Guests had gathered at Home Farm for a charity masquerade ball when Kim made her entrance. Fresh from jail and looking a million dollars, Kim announced she was back on the throne. But within minutes, the superbitch was making enemies with just about everyone.
One partygoer did not take kindly to Kim’s insults and shoved her over the balcony. Kim came crashing down on a champagne tower and for a moment fans feared she was dead.
Charity Dingle was arrested for the attack as witnesses had seen her quarreling with Kim, but in fact it was Faith Dingle who ‘fessed up to the deed. Faith showed little remorse, admitting everyone at the ball wanted to give ‘that witch a shove’.
And as for Kim, she lived to tell the tale, but was carted back to prison for driving without a licence.
Graham met a very grisly end (Credit: ITV/YouTube)
Who was Graham Foster’s killer?
Emmerdale kicked 2020 off in style with the murder of fan-favourite Graham Foster. Joe Tate’s former right-hand man made a lot of enemies during his two years in the village.
Graham’s on-off affair with Kim Tate had turned toxic after he’d started dating Rhona Goskirk, and she’d already instructed Al Chapman to kill him. Charity Dingle was baying for Graham’s blood after he locked her son Ryan Stocks in a shed. And then there was Marlon Dingle, who was desperate to stop Graham leaving the country with Rhona and Leo.
On January 20, 2020, Graham arranged to meet Marlon in the woods to discuss matters. But he never got the chance when he was walloped over the head by a hooded figure, who revealed themselves to be Rhona’s ex-husband and rapist Pierce Harris.
It turned out the pair had history after Graham visited Pierce in prison and had him beaten up. This time Pierce came out on top. He attacked Graham with a log, causing him to fall off a cliff. Pierce then delivered the final, fatal, blow with a torch!
Caleb’s crimes caught up with him (Credit: ITV)
Emmerdale best whodunnits: Who attacked Caleb Miligan?
No one was surprised when cold-hearted Caleb was pushed off a steep ravine by one of his foes.
In typical soap style, in the minutes leading up to the attack Caleb was busy making an enemy of just about everyone. But he’d already spent months lying and scheming as part of his mission to destroy Kim Tate.
When the truth came out, the villagers turned on Caleb during a tense showdown in the pub. Afterwards, Caleb took a walk into the countryside to think on his sins. But he wasn’t alone. Someone followed behind and shoved him over the edge of a woodland ridge.
Several characters were seen acting suspiciously at the time and most had their money on Mackenzie Boyd. However, it later transpired Caleb’s son Nicky was responsible for the violent attack. Viewers learnt the truth when the nanny paid his comatose father a visit in hospital and apologised for what he’d done.
Caleb came round and revealed he’d known all along it was Nicky. But he chose to forgive his boy, acknowledging it was his fault for forcing Nicky to take part in his dastardly schemes.
Evil Craig died under the hooves of Kim’s horse (Credit: ITV)
How did Craig Reed die?
The body of Lydia Dingle’s rapist was discovered on in the middle of a field back in October 2023, sparking what turned out to be Emmerdale’s most surprising whodunnit. It was a confusing case, but viewers only had to wait four days for the big reveal.
During a special week of episodes, the Dingles took centre stage at a lock-in at The Woolpack. One by one, the family were interrogated by Lydia, as she questioned their whereabouts the day Craig died.
Huge secrets were revealed, and for a while it looked as if Sam had murdered his wife’s abuser. But in a twist that, let’s face it, no one saw coming, Craig’s killer turned out to be Kim Tate’s horse, Ice.
Flashback scenes revealed Kim was out riding when she encountered Craig on her land. Bloodied and bruised after being beaten by Sam, Craig was raving like a loony. He jumped in front of Ice, who reacted by trampling Craig. By the time Cain arrived on the scene Craig was on his way out, so he and Kim opted not to dial 999. Instead the pair just calmly departed, leaving Craig to perish.

They say cats have nine lives, and so do a lot of Emmerdale characters, and no matter how many times they stare death in the face, they never actually meet their maker.
These extremely fortunate folk have overcome illnesses, survived catastrophic accidents and managed to escape murderers. In all honesty, they’ve got us wondering why and how they’re still breathing.
Here are nine Emmerdale characters who have defied the odds when it comes to death…
Cain lived to tell the tale (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)
Cain Dingle deserves an award when it comes to Emmerdale characters’ deaths
Cain Dingle is the soap’s Mr Invincible. No matter how many brushes with death this guy had, he always lives to fight another day – quite remarkable considering the rest of the Emmerdale characters on the list.
The mechanic came closest to meeting his maker in 2011 when he was left for dead in a huge whodunit storyline, dubbed ‘Judgement Day’. Cain was bludgeoned over the head with a crowbar by a mystery assailant, who later turned out to be his dad, Zak. But after a few weeks in hospital he was ready to go again.
So Cain survived having his skull smashed in, but what else?
He almost burnt to death after Adam Barton set fire to his garage in revenge for Cain destroying his mum and dad’s marriage. He’s also undergone surgery for a brain aneurysm, and nearly drowned in a freezing river.
Then there was the time Cain nearly blew himself up while trying to get Nate killed for sleeping with Moira. He also suffered a near-fatal brain injury during a violent brawl with nephew Aaron, and most recently cheated death when Moira blew up Butler’s barn.
He should come with a health and safety warning!
Mack can’t have many lives left now (Credit: ITV)
Mackenzie Boyd
How is Mack still alive? No, seriously. How is he still alive? It’s true that Mack gets himself into most of these dangerous situations, but he’s been fortunate to survive them.
In 2023, Mack was involved in a terrifying car accident with his wife Charity and lover Chloe – which only happened because he played away. The vehicle was left hanging over the edge of a cliff, and Mack managed to save himself and Charity from the wreckage. Chloe went down with the car, but miraculously wasn’t killed.
Mack was then held hostage by Chloe’s gangster dad, Harry. And he would have ended up with a bullet in his head if it wasn’t for Charity saving the day, and shooting Harry dead.
His latest two lives have been used up. First, surviving getting stabbed in the stomach by Charity, then almost getting gored by an angry bull.
What’s going to be next?
Aaron has cheated death numerous times (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)
Aaron Dingle
Aaron must know Hotten General like the back of his hand – he’s spent enough time there over the years.
The troubled Emmerdale character has a history of self-harm, and faced death when he developed septicemia after deliberately cutting his skin. Aaron’s overdosed on drugs and attempted suicide more than once.
In October 2016 he almost died after he and lover Robert were involved in the Hotten Bypass Crash. The couple’s car plunged into a lake and Aaron was trapped under the water. He was rushed to hospital and flatlined seconds after Robert popped the question.
But thanks to the miracles of modern medicine Aaron was saved.
Most recently John had to perform emergency surgery on his boyfriend after his lung collapsed. Aaron was taken to Hotten where it was revealed John had saved his life.
Sarah has a complicated medical history (Credit: ITV)
Sarah Sugden
Life hasn’t been very kind to poor Sarah, but she’s somehow managed to hang on in there.
At six-years-old she was diagnosed with fanconi anemia, a rare genetic disease, which increases the risk of cancer. Sarah developed leukemia and needed a bone marrow transplant to save her life, so Debbie and Andy conceived a saviour sibling. Baby Jack was born and was a match for his sister.
Sarah recovered, but was nearly killed after Kerry Wyatt accidentally set fire to Dale View while babysitting her and Jack.
Her health took another tragic turn in 2017 when she was diagnosed with throat cancer. Sarah’s long-lost great grandmother Faith stumped up £20,000 for her to undergo private treatment in Prague, which was a success.
If that wasn’t enough, less than 12 months later Sarah went into heart failure – a rare side-effect of her chemotherapy. A donor was found and Sarah underwent a risky heart transplant. Once more, there was a guardian angel looking down on her.
Sarah’s most recent hospital trips have been due to her drinking – something she’s not allowed to do due her condition.
Brave Moira recently underwent surgery to remove a brain tumour (Credit: ITV)
Moira Dingle is one of those Emmerdale characters whose been through enough, let alone near-death experiences
Moira’s another one that’s lucky to still be breathing if you think about all she’s been through.
She survived the car accident that claimed the life of her first husband John, walking away from the wreckage with just cuts and bruises. Then her life fell apart after the death of her daughter Holly from a heroin overdose.
Moira almost succumbed to addiction herself after she developed a dangerous alcohol habit. She once passed out drunk behind the wheel of her car and avoided what could have been a fatal collision.
2024 was the year Moira was forced to face her own mortality after being diagnosed with a non-cancerous brain tumour. After almost blowing herself and others up in an explosion at Butler’s barn, Moira’s underwent life-saving surgery to remove the mass.
She’s come through the operation, but isn’t out of the woods yet. Now Moira has to face her next hurdle – a course of radiotherapy. Will it be the death of her? Or will the Emmerdale cast member join the list of characters who survived death yet again?
Kathy was nearly smothered by evil Steve Marchant (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)
Kathy Glover
Fan favourite Kathy was used to her husbands dying on her, but she also came close on a few occasions.
In 1998 the cafe owner became the victim of a hit and run after Steve Marchant accidentally ran her over. He didn’t call the police as he was carrying out a robbery at the time and it was hours before Kathy was discovered. She spent several weeks in a coma, during which time Steve tried to suffocate her with a pillow to stop her telling the police he’d been driving the car.
Kathy was in peril again when she grew close to secret killer Graham Clark. He’d already done away with her best mate Rachel Hughes and made her death look like suicide. Graham almost killed Kathy by driving off a cliff top, but she escaped with her life.
Then just weeks later, Kathy was one of the passengers travelling on a community bus which collided with a Tate Haulage lorry. She was one of the last ones to be freed from the wreckage, which claimed several lives.
No one destroys Kim Tate (Credit: ITV)
Kim Tate
Queen Kim is immortal, well that’s what we’re telling ourselves. But that doesn’t mean she hasn’t given us a few scares during her magnificent reign.

After Kim made a triumphant return to the Dales in 2018, she was pushed off a balcony by Faith Dingle. We all feared Kim was no more, but she lived to tell the tale.
She’s also withstood months of being poisoned by vengeful son Jamie, and most recently viewers watched in horror as Dawn drugged Kim with ketamine. But as Jamie and Dawn discovered, no one gets the better of Kim!
He’s been beaten to near-death plenty of times, but has always lived to tell the tale (Credit: ITV)
Ross Barton
Ross has always lived life on the edge, but has somehow never ended up six feet under.
The closest Ross came was back in 2015 when Pete beat him to near death in revenge for his affair with Debbie. The audience were led to believe Pete had killed Ross after they watched him dump his body in the woods. But several weeks later it was revealed Ross had survived the attack as he made a dramatic return.
Ross has also overcome a horrific acid attack which has left him scarred for life, and put his life on the line competing in underground boxing matches.
How Lawrence survived getting shot we’ll never know (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)
Lawrence White’s list of ‘almost’ deaths was impressive
Former lord of the manor Lawrence White finally used up his nine lives in 2018 and it was about time! The Emmerdale member’s list of near-death experiences suspended disbelief, even by the standards of the other characters.
During his three and a bit years in the Dales, Lawrence suffered five suspected heart attacks, two of which were confirmed. He was shot in the stomach by deranged grandson Lachlan, and should have bled to death, but didn’t.
Then in 2017, Lawrence’s life was left hanging in the balance after his foe Tim Richards tried to gas him in a car. Once again, Lawrence was rescued in the nick of time, by Lachlan of all people!
But his number was up when Lachlan deliberately ploughed the family’s car into an oncoming lorry. Lawrence – who was travelling in the backseat – was catapulted through the windscreen and died on impact.

Ruby was caught enjoying a spot of afternoon delight with Caleb by Nate – who had stormed into Mill Cottage expecting to find his uncle with his wife, Tracy.
She’s no fool and Ruby’s suspicions were quickly aroused. She soon tracked Caleb and Tracy to find out the truth.
Ruby was quick to discover her husband had been playing away (again). She then ensured maximum embarrassment by publicly outing Caleb and Tracy’s affair at Belle and Tom’s wedding reception.

Ruby and Caleb’s relationship in Emmerdale
Ruby and Caleb’s marriage is best described as dysfunctional. The couple have been together for nearly three decades and have certainly had their ups and downs during that time.
Their upbringings couldn’t have been more different. Ruby came from a well-to-do family, while Caleb was raised in the care system.
They met as teenagers and it wasn’t long before Ruby fell pregnant. Her family disapproved of their relationship and forced Ruby to make a choice between them and Caleb, and she opted for the latter. But now we know that’s not actually the full story. More on that later.
Ruby is more than a match for cocky Caleb, and has totally got the measure of him. She’s fully aware of his extramarital antics, and tolerates him cheating while she’s not around. However Tracy was different as she could see he had developed real feelings for his nephew’s wife.
Caleb and Ruby are now officially back together. And she’ll be keeping a very close eye on him – expect fireworks!

She’s a protective mum
Ruby is very close to her only son, Nicky Miligan.
Ruby trusts Nicky with her secrets, but as a result he often found himself caught in the middle of her and Caleb’s problems.
And he definitely doesn’t always approve of his mum’s actions. He moved out of the family home, unable to live with her due to what she did to Ethan. And now he and partner Suni have left the village in order to get some space.
Things aren’t all smiles between Ruby and Steph (Credit: ITV)
Relationship with Steph
When Ruby first arrived in Emmerdale we didn’t know she and Caleb had a daughter, too. They didn’t speak about Steph until Ruby’s mum died and old family secrets got dragged up.
Now Steph’s arrived in the village wanting her inheritance and with a few scores to settle too. Ruby has desperately been trying to make amends with her daughter, but unfortunately Ruby’s dad comes as part of the package.
Steph has developed a close relationship with the man she believes to only be her grandfather. She has forced Anthony upon Ruby and insisted they get along, or else Ruby will lose Steph for good. But little does Steph – or anyone, in fact – know the terrible secret Ruby has been hiding about her dad since she was a teen.
Ruby is clearly terrified of her dad, Anthony (Credit: ITV)
What happened between Ruby and her dad in Emmerdale?
Ever since Anthony arrived in Emmerdale it has been very clear Ruby can’t bear to be near him. In public, he is charming and generous and everyone in the village loves him. Even Caleb, who believes Anthony threw his wife out because she was pregnant, has warmed to him and has urged Ruby to forgive him. Especially as Anthony claims to be dying from cancer.
Ruby has put on a brave face as much as she can. This despite Anthony’s sinister behaviour and threats to reveal her hook-up with Cain. It was soon very clear to viewers there was much more to this. Then in December 2024, flashbacks to Ruby’s 16th birthday, revealedthat her dad had sexually abused her as a child. It started when Ruby was just 14.
When Ruby fell pregnant she didn’t know if Anthony or Caleb was the father. Desperate to believe it was the man she loved, Ruby left with Caleb. She has kept her secret for over 30 years.
Until now, when Anthony’s presence and the encouragement of Chas, has made Ruby seek answers. However, they were the answers she didn’t want: Caleb is not Steph’s father. This leaves only one outcome: Steph is the product of incest and her grandad is also her dad.
Anthony is set to be murdered in the coming weeks after the truth comes out. But is Ruby the one responsible for ending her father’s life – and easing her own pain after all these years?
Cain and Ruby was all kings of wrong and we do not approve (Credit: ITV)
Fling with Cain Dingle
In amongst the devastation of having her abusive father back in her life, Ruby started to spiral. She sought solace in Cain’s garage, where he was also seeking comfort at the bottom of a whiskey bottle as his wife, Moira, was having brain surgery.
One thing led to another and Cain and Ruby slept together. Just once. And it was very definitely a mistake, one neither of them wants to repeat.
In fact, now they are just desperate to keep it quiet. But Cain’s guilt is eating away at him, plus Anthony now knows the truth and is using it to blackmail Ruby. Can Cain stop the secret getting out?
Ruby didn’t get to see her mum before she died (Credit: ITV)
Ruby’s mum
When Ruby’s mum was dying, she wanted to see her daughter. But Caleb intercepted the phone call and went to see his mother-in-law, Helen, instead.
He blackmailed Helen into giving him £100,000 and robbed Ruby of the chance to speak to her estranged mum before she died.
But the question remains whether Helen knew of Ruby’s abuse and failed to act? Or was she oblivious to the whole thing?
Ruby wanted to make Ethan pay, but feels awful for how it turned out (Credit: ITV)
Is Ruby a killer?
When son Nicky was left in a coma with a bleed on the brain following a car accident, Ruby wanted revenge. Of course she was never going to get revenge through the normal, legal channels and instead drove a car at the person who had been driving when Nicky was hurt.
She knocked down Ethan Anderson and made it very clear next time she would finish the job. However it seems she didn’t have to because despite getting up and walking away, a few days later, Ethan dropped dead.
His father Charles believed it was as a direct result of the hit and run, but Ruby kept quiet over her involvement .
The coroner then confirmed Ethan had a brain aneurism and Ruby was not responsible for Ethan’s death.
They are plotting (Credit: ITV)
Ruby and Rose Jackson
When Dawn Fletcher’s estranged mum, Rose, arrived in the Dales having walked out on her when she was just five years old, it seemed a strange coincidence. But of course, nothing’s ever a coincidence in Soapland and it was soon discovered by viewers Rose hadn’t arrived of her own accord at all.
In fact, Ruby had paid off all her debts in exchange for her help ruining Kim Tate’s life. When Ruby first arrived she had actually tried to team up with Kim to take down Caleb, however, Kim didn’t trust her and Ruby ended up back in Caleb’s arms anyway.

Dramatic comebacks of iconic characters is what all Emmerdale fans live for. Recently, we’ve been treated to the return of Kim’s nemesis Joe Tate – who’s back in the village after a six-year absence.
Joe was unveiled as the mastermind behind Will and Peter’s plot to bring down Kim, and we can’t wait to see what other wicked tricks he’s got up his sleeve.
His perfectly staged return has also got us thinking about the other Emmerdale comebacks that really hit the mark. Here are six characters we were delighted to see back on our screens…
Kim rose from the dead (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)
Best Emmerdale comebacks includes Kim Tate
Kim is the queen of the comeback, and one in particular has gone down in Emmerdale history.
It was 1997 when Kim did a disappearing act following the death of her lover Dave Glover. She paid a lookalike to drive her car around the village to make it look as if she was still around. But then the woman was found dead behind the wheel and Frank was charged with ‘Kim’s murder’.
Kim made a spectacular return and confronted Frank in the living room at Home Farm. The shock of seeing her back from the dead caused him to suffer a fatal heart attack. Instead of ringing for an ambulance, Kim just stood over and watched Frank die.
Once she was sure he was gone, Kim calmly pulled out her make-up compact, powdered her nose, then used the mirror to check Frank had stopped breathing. Oh, and she ended up receiving half of Home Farm in Frank’s will. What an icon!
Aaron returned to Emmerdale and found love with Robert (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)
Aaron Dingle
There was a lot of hype surrounding Danny Miller’s return to Emmerdale in 2014.
After two years away from the soap, would the award-winning actor be able to recapture the magic he’d brought to the role of Aaron first time round? As it turned out, yes!
Aaron returned to stop his best mate Adam getting involved in a robbery with Ross Barton and Donna Windsor. That particular plot was pretty forgettable, but what was to follow was certainly not.
The Emmerdale writers had decided it was time for Aaron to have a new love interest. And just weeks after his comeback, the moody mechanic shared that first forbidden kiss with Robert Sugden. And with that Robron was born!

Robert Sugden makes the list for best Emmerdale comebacks
Robert’s return to Emmerdale in 2014 was another triumph!
The legacy character had been away for five years when the soap announced his return. It was confirmed the role of Robert had been recast, with actor Ryan Hawley taking over from Karl Davies.
Within weeks it was hard to imagine anyone but Ryan portraying Robert. The character’s addictive love affair with Aaron led to one of the most popular partnerships in all of Soapland.
Charity has always lived life in the fast lane (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)
Charity Dingle
In 2015 Charity was sentenced to two years in prison for perverting the course of justice. She was released after a year, but when Cain and Moira went to pick her up, they discovered she’d already left.
As it turned out the crafty minx was straight back to her old tricks. Moments after leaving the clink, Charity went on the rob and stole a red Ferrari from a nearby dealership. She took it for a spin, but disaster struck enroute when Charity ploughed the vehicle into a field and got stuck in the mud.
Later that day, Cain and Moira spotted the stolen Ferrari. They were gobsmacked when Charity stepped out, declaring she couldn’t come back from prison with nothing! Moira dealt with the situation by taking the car back to the dealership, while the police were hot on their heels.
But the shocks kept on coming when Charity then entered The Woolpack and declared she’d bought Diane Sugden’s half of the pub! She then blackmailed former lover Ross Barton into coughing up the cash for the purchase.
Ross knows how to make an entrance (Credit: ITV)
Ross Barton
The long-awaited return of the Barton bad boy was one of our 2024 highlights.
Ross was a favourite amongst the fans during his first stint in the Dales and always at the centre of the drama. When news of his return was announced, actor Michael Parr, teased there would be fireworks for his character. And he wasn’t wrong!
During his time away, Ross had turned his hand to bareknuckle boxing and was unveiled as Billy Fletcher’s opponent. Strutting in to whoops and cheers from the crowd, Ross ripped off his sleeveless hoodie to show a rather impressive six pack.
Now that’s how to make an entrance!
All eyes were on Tina when she showed up at Zak’s funeral (Credit: ITV)
Tina Dingle
Zak Dingle’s funeral on Emmerdale was full of surprises – the biggest one being the comeback of his long lost daughter, Tina.
The character, who was previously played by Jacqueline Pirie, hadn’t been seen in the Dales for 28 years. So you can imagine everyone’s shock when she rocked up at Zak’s graveside. Belle didn’t even recognise her half-sister, which is hardly surprising seeing as they’d never met.
Now played by Brassic star Samantha Power, Tina claimed she was back to pay her respects. But there was an ulterior motive to her return. After causing carnage at the funeral, which resulted in her being carted off by the police, Tina tried to lay claim to Zak’s will. Then came the bombshell that she was Vinny’s real mum, a secret which she tried to blackmail Mandy with.
She may have wreaked havoc amongst the Dingles, but Tina Mark Two did not get a positive reaction from the fans. They took to social media to voice their disappointment, with some saying the recast was an insult to the original actress.
Samantha has shared she’d be up for Tina coming back to cause more mischief, so let’s see what 2025 has in store.

Emmerdale has never shied away when it comes to tackling the tough subject of addictions. Over the years, we’ve watched characters battle against the most dangerous of demons. From drink to drugs, gambling to self-harm.
Currently, Laurel has fallen off the wagon after she suffered a relapse at Christmas. Her dependency on drink led to the break up of her marriage to Marlon and even saw Laurel turn to prostitution. This time she turned to Marlon for help and then tried to kiss him, leaving a huge issue in his marriage to Rhona.
But which other Emmerdale characters struggled to break the habit and whose fight against their addictions cost them their life?
Annie was addicted to tranquilisers (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)
Annie Sugden was one of the Emmerdale characters who overcame their addictions
Annie was the strong and steady matriarch of the Sugden family. She ran Emmerdale Farm and practically raised three children single-handedly. But her life was also blighted by a series of terrible tragedies.
In the space of 13 years, Annie lost her daughter Peggy to a brain hemorrhage, her twin grandchildren were killed by a train and her daughter-in-law died in a car crash. Then in 1988, Annie was almost killed herself after getting caught in a fire at Crossgill Farm.
Traumatised by her brush with death, Annie was prescribed with tranquilisers, and ended up dependent on them. As her addiction took hold, Annie’s loved ones intervened and were able to help wean her off.

Laurel Thomas
Laurel addiction to drink brought destruction and death to her family, and almost claimed her life.
She turned to booze in late 2014 after her relationship with then-husband Marlon Dingle ran into trouble. Within weeks, Laurel was drinking day and night and struggling to keep it from her family.
But her reliance on liquor put little April in danger after she accidentally drank a glass of orange juice which Laurel had laced with vodka. Worse was to come when Laurel choked on her own vomit in front of April and young son Arthur while she was supposed to be looking after them. She was found in the nick of time by Emmerdale’s Marlon, and thankfully it wasn’t the case where addictions win the battle.
The carnage continued as Laurel ran over and killed Marlon’s pet dog Daisy while under the influence and tried to dispose of the animal’s body. But her rock bottom came when she slept with a stranger for cash to fund her next drink.
Sickened by the depths she’d sunk to, Laurel finally sought professional help to get sober. Unfortunately her marriage to Marlon did not survive.
Frank often turned violent after a drink (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)
Frank Tate
Home Farm owner Frank had a tendency to hit the bottle when life wasn’t going his way.
His marriage to second wife Kim was famously volatile and rocked by his drinking and her infidelities. Frank struggled with alcohol issues on and off for years, and was prone to outbursts of violence towards his spouse.
After discovering Kim had cheated with gamekeeper Neil Kincaid, Frank drank himself into oblivion, then attacked his love rival. A dark period in Frank’s life followed as he fell back into addiction, but he and Kim eventually reconciled. Although we all know how that story ended.
Rhona’s addiction led her to rob her own workplace (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)
Emmerdale’s Rhona Goskirk battled her addictions but she ended up in hospital
Rhona’s life took a dangerous turn in 2013 when she became reliant on painkillers. After initially taking them to help her bad back, the local vet found herself unable to get through the day without self-medicating,
As her dependence worsened, Rhona risked her livelihood by stealing pills from the surgery’s drug cabinet. She was caught by best mate Vanessa, who agreed to keep her secret because she was in love with her. In turn, Rhona made out she felt the same so Vanessa could enable her habit.
Events came to a head after Rhona’s then-husband Paddy found out she was mixed up with a drug dealer called Gary. She admitted she had a problem and told Vanessa she’d been using her.
In despair, Rhona took an overdose. She was rushed to hospital and told her kidneys were on the verge of collapse. The bleak diagnosis and threat of losing young son Leo was the wake-up call Rhona needed. She checked into rehab and got clean. Thankfully, for Rhona, it was an Emmerdale storyline where someone overcame their addictions.

Ross Barton
In 2018 Ross fell victim to an acid attack which left him with life-changing injuries. He was put on medication to help deal with the pain from his burns, but began popping the prescribed pills like Smarties. The Emmerdale storyline ventured down a different path to other characters to faced their addictions.
When Dr Liam refused to renew his prescription, Ross began to spiral. But Rhona – a former addict herself – recognised the signs and was able to support her friend in getting clean.
Months later, Ross relapsed after being offered cocaine as payment for a car theft. He succumbed to temptation and started taking the Class A on a daily basis. But the endless nights of hard partying and drug abuse took their toll. Ross put his and young son Moses’s lives at risk after he collapsed during a game of football.
Haunted by his reckless actions, Ross decided to clean up his act and left Emmerdale for a fresh start with girlfriend Rebecca White.
Addiction has been a running theme in Aaron’s life (Credit: ITV)
Aaron Dingle
Aaron is one of Emmerdale’s most self-destructive characters. He’s had a troubled life and a history of drug abuse, self-harm and suicide attempts.
These desperate cries for help have largely been driven by the trauma Aaron has suffered in his life – struggling with his sexuality, his toxic on/off love affair with Robert Sugden and the abuse he experienced at the hands of his father, Gordon.
Aaron’s currently in a place of contentment with new boyfriend John Sugden, but there’s always a sense he could be tipped over the edge at any moment.
Tragic Holly lost her life to heroin (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)
Holly Barton’s death was a tough watch compared to other Emmerdale storylines based on addictions
Holly’s premature death from a heroin overdose in 2016 sent shockwaves across the world of soap.
The character’s lengthy battle with substance abuse began when she was a teenager. She started using cocaine recreationally, but soon moved on to ecstasy, ketamine, then heroin. Holly was eventually confronted by parents Moira and John. She ran away from home for a while, but they brought her back and helped her wean off drugs slowly.
Months later, John was killed in a car accident and Holly relapsed, but she vowed to change and left the Dales for a new life in London.
She returned in 2016 and it soon became clear she’d succumbed to her old demons. After causing more misery for her family, Holly pledged to get clean again and found support from fellow addict Jai Sharma.
Then, in what appeared to be the middle of just an ordinary mid-week episode, came the shattering discovery that Holly had relapsed – and this time it was fatal. Moira discovered her tragic girl dead in her bed and an empty heroin wrap on the floor. It’s gone down as one of Emmerdale’s most dramatic exits as well as hardest endings for soap characters and their addictions.
Moira is sticking to soft drinks these days (Credit: ITV)
Moira Dingle
Addiction clearly runs in the Barton family, but Moira’s was with drink rather than drugs.
Alcohol first became Moira’s friend after her affair with Cain’s secret son Nate became public knowledge. Ostracised by her family and friends, she hit the bottle.
Moira’s dependence on drink almost destroyed her marriage to Cain. She put her young son Isaac at risk by passing out on the sofa and ignoring his cries for help. Then there was the time she passed out drunk behind the wheel and narrowly avoided a collision with another car.
The farmer managed to get herself sober, but fell off the wagon briefly in 2022 after Cain took the blame for murdering Al Chapman. She suffered another brief relapse in 2024 in the weeks before she was diagnosed with a brain tumour.
Moira is currently tee-total and we hope it stays that way.
Gambling addict Pearl got sacked for stealing (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)
Pearl Ladderbanks
2015 was Pearl’s annus horribilis. The Emmerdale golden oldie got herself into debt after underpaying her gas bill and knew her receptionist wage at the vets wasn’t enough to pay it back.
Desperate times called for desperate measures and Pearl turned to gambling to fix her financial woes. She loved the thrill of her new habit, but unfortunately it only made matters worse.
After a few big losses, Pearl began stealing from the vet’s and foolishly faked having Alzheimer’s to excuse the missing money. Pearl was found out when Vanessa Woodfield discovered a list of IOUs she’d been keeping. She got the sack and was forced to sell her house to Eric Pollard to pay off her debts.
Paul had a long history of gambling (Credit: ITV)
Emmerdale’s Paul Ashdale put the spotlight on gambling addictions
Vinny’s wayward father Paul had a long history of gambling addiction. It led him to walk out on his son when he was young, leaving his ex-girlfriend Mandy to raise Vinny single handedly.
Paul returned to the pair’s life in April 2020 and claimed he’d given up the gambling for good. He even managed to worm his way back into Mandy’s affections, and they made plans to marry.
However, Paul was not the changed man he claimed to be. He was still gambling – making secret trips to the casino and frittering away thousands. Unable to tell Mandy the truth, Paul used Vinny as his emotional and physical punch bag.
Eventually Vinny found the courage to tell girlfriend Liv Flaherty what was happening. On the day of Paul’s wedding to Mandy, Liv confronted him at the barn where he was getting hitched. Paul attacked her, but moments later Jimmy King’s lorry ploughed into the barn. Liv managed to escape, but Paul perished when the place went up in flames. Sadly, he became another Emmerdale character who faced a tragic fate after their addictions took hold.
Guilt-ridden Liv turned to liquor to numb her pain (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)
Liv Flaherty
The guilt over leaving Paul to die is what drove Liv back to drink. She had previously battled hard to overcome an alcohol addiction, but the relapse almost cost Liv her life.
As her drinking binges got more extreme, the teen ended up in hospital after passing out at the cemetery and nearly choking on her own vomit. Following the scary episode, Liv promised big brother Aaron she was committed to getting sober.
However, her manipulative cow of a mum, Sandra had other ideas and deliberately derailed Liv’s recovery by spiking her drink.
In the end, Liv did manage to overcome her drinking demons, but met a tragic end in the Emmerdale 50th anniversary episode, which was a tough pill to swallow after defeating her addictions.

A brand new year in Emmerdale is always an exciting prospect and it’s got us thinking about the characters want to see more of in 2025.
There’s a real mixture of locals on our list. Some are legacy characters who have become a little redundant in recent years and need revitilising. Others are newcomers to the village that we’re keen to get to know more. And then there’s a non-resident who we’re desperate to become a permanent fixture.
Here are our nine folk who deserve more screen time next year…
We want to see a different side to John Sugden (Credit: ITV)
Emmerdale characters we want to see in 2025: John Sugden
John Sugden’s arrival to the village in August 2024 came with high hopes. As the long lost son of an Emmerdale icon, this was the chance to put the Sugdens back on the map. But four months on and we’re still waiting for something – anything – exciting to happen.
Right now, John isn’t bringing an awful amount to Emmerdale. We get that he’s an enigma, and self-confessed lone wolf. We don’t even mind he’s moody and defensive. But he’s just so boring. Even John’s relationship with Aaron feels like it’s going through the motions. If you compare it to the passion of Robron, there’s no energy or spark.
But there has to be more to John than what we’ve been shown so far. That explanation he gave Aaron about Aidan Moore being his lost love felt too neat for our liking. If you ask us he’s lying and we want to know why. Is this guy even John Sugden?!
We’re hoping Emmerdale are going to solve the mystery and give us a reason to invest in John as a character. Otherwise he might as well get back in that campervan and carry on driving.
Vic is being wasted as a character (Credit: ITV)
Victoria Sugden
While we’re on the subject of Sugdens, isn’t it time poor Victoria had a decent storyline? She’s barely on screen these days, and when she does pop up it’s normally to interfere in other folks’ business.
If you look past her being a nosey old nag, Vic is an important character in Emmerdale’s history. She’s one of its longest-serving residents and has lived in the village since she was born.
What we’d like is 2025 is to see Victoria lighten up a bit (okay, a lot) and get a life of her own. Perhaps an exciting new career opportunity or how about bring back her ex-husband Adam Barton? They made a great couple and we think he’d be lovely with her little Harry.
PC Swirling is popular amongst the fans (Credit: ITV)
Emmerdale characters we want to see in 2025: PC Swirling
Fan favourite PC Swirling has been policing the Dales on and off for 20 years. We think that kind of loyal service should be rewarded. So how about making him a permanent character? We think he would be a marvelous addition.
The local copper recently showed viewers his softer side after arresting Cain Dingle for assault. Sensing Cain was troubled, Swirling got him to open up about Moira’s brain tumour diagnosis and shared he’d been through similar heartache with his aunt. And remember how he turned up to pay his respects at Zak’s funeral? He’s clearly a good egg.
Emmerdale could make more use of Swirling by moving him into the village. He could bring Mrs Swirling with him too, if she exists. We’d also love to see him teaming up with a few of the locals, particularly Kim Tate.
We would like to see Dawn smile in 2025 (Credit: ITV)
Dawn Fletcher
The past 12 months have not been kind to Dawn. She’s had to cope with baby Evan’s cancer, Will and Rose’s toxic war and now her marriage to Billy is in crisis following his ongoing involvement in illegal boxing. Would a happier 2025 be too much to ask?
Ever since Dawn arrived in the Dales six years ago she’s been blighted by bad luck and misery. But we would really like the chance to see a lighter, more bubbly side to her character.
Dawn’s got all the makings to be a brilliant barmaid behind The Woolpack bar. And we’d love to see her make friends with some of the fellow mums in the village, perhaps have a long overdue girly night out?
Caleb’s character is confusing (Credit: ITV)
Emmerdale characters we want to see in 2025: Caleb Miligan
Ruby’s character development has been one of the greatest triumphs of 2024, but Caleb remains something of a frustrating mystery. One minute he’s hell bent on toppling Kim Tate’s empire. Next, it’s all been forgotten about.
Just who is the real Caleb? Is he and out and out lying cheat and scoundrel? Or does have actually have a moral compass?
Next year we might get to find out as two secrets threaten to cause carnage. The first being Ruby’s betrayal with Cain. Even though Caleb’s repeatedly cheated on her, would he forgive Ruby for sleeping with his own brother?
And then of course, there’s Anthony’s abuse of Ruby and the question of whether Caleb isn’t actually Steph’s father. This revelation is going to destroy Caleb. And we wouldn’t be surprised if Caleb tried to put Anthony in the grave before the cancer finishes him off.
Gabby has gone under the radar (Credit: ITV)
Gabby Thomas
Where is Gabby these days? She’s gone completely under the radar since getting together with Vinny and we’d like her back.
The couple still appear to be in the honeymoon period and are proving the doubters wrong. But do they have what it takes to go the distance? 2025 will give us that answer.
Gabby now deserves a prominent storyline of her own. Will she end up getting drawn into the drama at Home Farm? Kim is going to need someone in her corner, and who better than her canny protegee? Gabs has learnt from the best and has the ability to take anyone on.
There are tough times ahead for Jacob (Credit: ITV)
Emmerdale characters we want to see in 2025: Jacob Gallagher
Emmerdale has confirmed Jacob will be taking centre stage in a gripping new plot for 2025. And it’s about time too!
A special standalone episode will follow the medical student as he’s pushed to his limits during the first day working in a busy A&E department. We’ve long been fans of actor Joe Warren-Plant and think this is going to be his time to shine.
As well embarking on a tough new career, Jacob is set to start a romance with long-time friend Sarah Sugden. It’s surprising the writers have waited so long to put these two together as they really suit one another.
Also, we suspect Jacob is going to be involved in mum Leyla’s departure from the village. So it looks as if we’ll be seeing a lot of him in the next few weeks. Hurrah!
Ross has been up to no good again (Credit: ITV)
Ross Barton
Mike Parr must be one of the busiest actors in soap right now, he’s barely been off our screen. Not that we’re complaining – we’d like a little less of Ross’s predictable bad boy antics.
The moments we’ve warmed to Ross most are the scenes he’s shared with April Windsor. Because of their shared history, their bond feels genuine and we like how Ross has become a stepfather figure/confidant for the troubled teen. Plus it’s always a delight to see the brilliant Amelia Flanagan (aka April) being given a meatier storyline.
But what we’d really like in 2025 is find out more about those six years Ross spent in Liverpool with his late girlfriend Rebecca White and her son Seb. What really happened to split them up? And did Ross have anything to do with Bex’s untimely passing? Let’s fill in the gaps and delve a little deeper.
Steph’s life is set to implode (Credit: ITV)
Emmerdale characters we want to see in 2025: Steph Miligan
The Miligans are the family to watch as we go into 2025, and Steph in particular.
We really like what we’ve seen of the newcomer so far. She’s calculating, uncompromising, feisty and fearless – basically her mum’s mini me. But her whole world could be about to come crashing down.
Like Caleb, Steph is still in the dark over the abuse Ruby suffered at the hands of Anthony. And we’re yet to discover whether Steph’s biological father is in fact her grandad, who she idolises. If the truth does out, everything Steph has ever known would be shattered in an instant.
Might Steph team up with Caleb to take down evil Anthony? Or exact her own revenge on the perverted OAP?

A new year has dawned in Emmerdale and we’re excited for all the drama that’s going to unfold over the course of 2025.
It’s also got us thinking about the current storylines and unresolved matters we’d like to see come to a conclusion over the next 12 months. And some preferably sooner rather than later.
Here are eight plots that need to be tied up this year…

Emmerdale storylines that need to be tied up: The mystery of Aidan Moore
Please, please, please can we get closure on the whole Aidan Moore mystery and find out who he really was/is? There has to be a more to the story than him being John Sugden’s dead ex.
What we know so far – according to John – is that he and Aidan served in the army together. They fell in love, but kept their romance under wraps through fear of being ostracised. Aidan was tragically killed in a bomb blast while they were out in Afghanistan, which left John bereft.
But even though John has confessed his love to Aaron and chucked Aidan’s dog tag away in the woods, we’re not buying it. Something doesn’t feel right and we suspect John is lying.
Fans are still speculating that John is actually Aidan, an imposter sent by Aaron’s imprisoned ex Robert to cause carnage. While this theory seems a little wild, we’d like to think the truth is more exciting than a tale of lost love. So let’s be having it.
We want a happier and healthier 2025 for Moira (Credit: ITV)
Moira’s brain tumour
First off, we think Natalie J Robb has been superb throughout the whole Moira brain tumour storyline. The actress’s portrayal of her character’s traumatic health battle deserves all the awards going.
But we don’t want another year of watching one of our favourite characters suffering.
Although Moira’s surgery to remove her tumour was ultimately a success, she still has to undergo a grueling course of radiotherapy. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if the treatment worked and she was given the all clear?
We would love nothing more than for Moira to be able to put this traumatic chapter behind her and look to the future.
Cain and Ruby should never mention their affair again (Credit: ITV)
Emmerdale storylines that need to be tied up: Cain and Ruby’s affair
Cain and Ruby’s drunken hook-up was neither one’s finest hour. Since then the pair have been desperate that Moira never discovers what they were doing while she was undergoing life-saving brain surgery.
And we are in full agreement.
Affair reveals in soap have historically made for thrilling viewing, but absolutely no good can come out of this betrayal being outed. It would cause maximum pain and distress to all involved. Moira needs to focus on getting better, Ruby’s already in hell, and it would be a shame to ruin their lovely friendship. Cain and Caleb we care less about, but that would surely be the end of the brother’s bond.
What Cain and Ruby did was a stupid mistake, let’s just leave it at that and move on.
Who will Steph’s father turn out to be? (Credit: ITV)
Steph has always been led to believe she was conceived on the day of Ruby’s 16th birthday. But now viewers know this was the day Anthony forced himself on his terrified daughter. And it wasn’t the first time he’d done it.
Ruby had also started dating Caleb at the time, which means there’s a high chance Steph is his child. But there’s only one way to determine her paternity, and that’s with a DNA test.
We really hope Steph doesn’t turn out to be Anthony’s, because the storyline is twisted enough as it is. But it certainly would make for more of a dramatic reveal.
Anthony must be made to pay for what he’s done (Credit: ITV)
Emmerdale storylines that need to be tied up: Anthony getting away with it
There’s no way we get to end of next year without retribution for Ruby. And that means Anthony being exposed for the evil abuser he is.
The old man is on borrowed time having been given a terminal cancer diagnosis, so this needs to happen fast. But we can’t bear the thought of Anthony taking his sordid secret to the grave and Ruby not having the chance to see her father punished for his despicable crimes.
Let him end his days in jail we say!
We have to know if Rebecca was murdered by Ross (Credit: ITV)
What happened to Rebecca White
Ross’s bombshell about the death of his former girlfriend Rebecca hit us hard. It was out of the blue and brutal.
During a chat with Charity, Ross revealed Rebecca had died suddenly during a routine surgery, leaving little Seb motherless. The lad was removed from Ross’s care and is now being raised by an aunt of Rebecca’s in Bristol.
But there has to be a reason why the show’s writers decided to kill off such a memorable character and the mother of Robert Sugden’s son. Does this pave the way for Robert’s long-awaited return? Or is there something more sinister at play? Could it be that Ross is telling fibs and he actually played a part in Rebecca’s untimely end?
Questions need to be answered that will either confirm or deny any speculation about Ross being a murderer.
Nate deserved a better send off (Credit: ITV)
Emmerdale storylines that need to be tied up: Nate’s unfinished business
We think Emmerdale did Nate Robinson dirty by giving him such a rubbish exit.
The character, played by actor Jurrell Carter, ditched the village in September 2024 to start a new life in Shetland. But his hurried off-screen departure made absolutely no sense.
Nate had just decided to give his marriage to Tracy another go. But then Cain got it into his head that Nate was sleeping with Moira and violently attacked his son. When a fire later broke out in Butler’s barn, viewers feared that Nate had been killed off in the deadly blaze. But no, apparently Nate just slipped away quietly to Scotland without telling anyone.
Little Frankie is overdue a visit from her daddy, so why doesn’t Nate pop back for a visit? And then he might get the chance to say a proper goodbye to his loved ones. And get an apology from Cain. That is, unless he is actually dead…
Billy and Dawn need to break up (Credit: ITV)
Dawn and Billy’s marriage
You know that expression ‘flogging a dead horse’? That’s how we feel about Dawn and Billy‘s marriage. While we agree 2024 was brutal with baby Evan’s cancer battle and Will’s shock death, these two just aren’t right together any more. And there’s no point pretending otherwise.
Marriages in Soapland rarely go the distance, so what would be the problem if Billy and Dawn called it quits? All they seem to do lately is drag one another down. Split them up before the rot really sets in so they can remain mates and focus on co-parenting their kids.
A clean break from Billy might also breathe some new life into downtrodden Dawn. Who needs a man to have fun? Unless it’s Ross Barton. In that case we’d quite like to see Dawn getting it on with the village bad boy.

It’s been another action-packed year in Emmerdale, with several standout moments and performances from the brilliant cast, but what were the best storylines of 2024?
Major storylines have included Belle Dingle’s domestic abuse, Moira’s brain tumour diagnosis, Kim Tate’s return to the top and the arrival of a brand new Sugden – John. We said a sad goodbye to Emmerdale legend Zak Dingle, and hello again to village bad boy Ross Barton. 2024 has also seen the arrival of Caleb’s feisty missus, Ruby, who’s now a firm favourite amongst the fans.
So as we get ready to see what 2025 has in store, let’s round up our top picks from the past 12 months…
This year has been one Belle would rather forget (Credit: ITV)
Emmerdale 2024 best storylines: Belle’s hell at the hands of Tom
The standout storyline of 2024 has to be Belle’s abuse at the hands evil Tom King. It’s been a difficult journey to follow, but Emmerdale have worked hard to tackle a subject that sadly occurs all too often in real life.
Tom’s true nature was revealed this year as he subjected Belle to a wicked campaign of physical and mental torture, which pushed her to the very brink.
In September, the soap aired a special episode where a broken Belle was haunted by her imagined futures. These disturbing nightmares gave Belle the courage she needed to report her ex to the police. But it was another two months before Tom was finally arrested and charged with abuse.
At last, justice has been served, Tom is behind bars and Belle has been reunited with her beloved Piper. Finally she can start to slowly rebuild the life that Tom shattered.
We want to take this moment to applaud actors Eden Taylor-Draper and James Chase, whose performances this past year have been nothing short of spectacular.
Mack got stabbed in the stomach by Charity (Credit: ITV)
Charity stabbing Mack
Charity began the year in a very dark place. She was suffering from PTSD and wracked with guilt over accidentally killing gangster Damon ‘Harry’ Harris while trying to protect her husband Mackenzie.
Haunted by visions of the man whose life she had taken and gripped by insomnia and night terrors, Charity’s mental health began to spiral out of control. She was also triggered by any loud noises, as it reminded her of the sound of the gunshot that fateful day.
Events reached a terrifying climax on February 22 when Mack walked in to find his wife having a night terror. Believing he was Harry, Charity grabbed a knife to protect herself and plunged it into Mack’s stomach.
Mack would have used up the last of nine lives if it wasn’t for Moira popping by and finding him lying on the floor. He was rushed to hospital and made a full recovery, while Charity found herself under arrest. She was later let off and attended therapy to get herself better.
Chas has faced her darkest fears (Credit: ITV)
Emmerdale 2024 best storylines: Chas’s cancer battle
Chas Dingle has faced some tough battles in her time, but non more so than her one against cancer.
The Woolpack manager’s world was turned upside down after her lover Liam alerted her to a lump in a breast. Just days later, Chas’s worst fears were confirmed when doctors revealed she had triple negative breast cancer – the same type her late mum Faith had died of.
The discovery was a big turning point for Chas, who had previously been disowned by the Dingles after her affair with Al Chapman. After learning their family member was in crisis, they all rallied round and supported Chas.
Another crushing blow came when further tests revealed Chas was carrying the faulty BRCA2 gene. She urged the rest of her family to get checked out, and Aaron discovered he also carried BRCA2. Chas was on hand to support her son, while she made the brave decision to undergo a double mastectomy.
The treatment worked and Chas is now in remission. But while it’s still in debate whether Chas has done enough to be redeemed, we hope 2025 is a happier, and healthier, one for her.
Fans were shocked to discover Ella is a murderer (Credit: ITV)
Ella’s killer secret
One of the darkest twists of 2024 was the revelation that Ella Forster was a child killer.
Ella was introduced in January when she landed a job at Brook Cottage Surgery and embarked on a romance with Dr Liam Cavanagh. As a newcomer to the Dales, not much was known about the character’s backstory. But it became clear Ella was hiding a secret she didn’t want anyone to find out.
As speculation mounted, nothing could prepare Liam for the discovery that his girlfriend was actually a murderer.
It turned out Ella had taken the life of her childhood best friend Joanne in a jealous rage. The crime had occurred on the day of Ella’s (who was known as Ruth back then) 11th birthday. Ella was imprisoned for years and had assumed a new identity after being released. The disturbing revelation caused Ella’s relationship with Liam to collapse and made her the village outcast.
Ella later found out she was expecting Liam’s baby, but tragedy struck when she suffered a miscarriage. With Liam now loved up with Chas, it’s rumoured Ella will be departing next spring. But how will she bow out?
John Sugden caused a stir when he came to the village (Credit: ITV)
Emmerdale 2024 best storylines: The arrival of John Sugden
The announcement of a new Sugden coming to Emmerdale caused great excitement. Finally it was a chance to put the soap’s famous family back on the map, and actually give Victoria a decent storyline.
Vic first discovered she and John were related on the day of his mum’s funeral, when Eric Pollard let the cat of the bag. She was buzzing to meet her late dad’s long-lost son, but John couldn’t have really cared less. He also had zero interest in getting to know the rest of Emmerdale’s residents and made an enemy of Mackenzie Boyd.
However, there was one person who John did connect with, and that was Aaron Dingle. The pair embarked on a steamy affair which was made more interesting by the fact John is the half-brother of Aaron’s ex Robert. John and Aaron have just confessed their love for one another. But it all feels a little too safe for our liking. We’d love it for Robert to come home and compete with his sibling for Aaron’s affections.
And while we’re at it we’re hoping to learn more about John’s backstory. That Aidan Moore mystery was a right anti-climax, although we’re not convinced John was telling the truth. Will we ever find out what he’s hiding?
Madame Diamante Dales gave us some great LOL moments (Credit: ITV)
Mandy’s adventures as Madame Diamante Dales
Mandy can always be relied on for bringing the laughs and we loved her short-lived career as Madame Diamante Dales!
Everything was going great until Bear overheard Miss DD on the phone to one of her clients and spilled the beans to Paddy. Mandy’s saucy side hustle almost cost her her man, but Paddy forgave all the lies and still married her.
Kim got her own back on two-timing Will (Credit: ITV)
Emmerdale 2024 best storylines: Kim’s revenge on cheating Will
2024 marked the return of Queen Kim, who has shown once again she’s not a woman to be trifled with.
We feared Kim had gone soft on us after she fell victim to Will’s manipulative ex-wife Rose. The scheming madame went as far as forcing Kim out of her beloved Home Farm, and she just let it happen. Even when it transpired Rose had been working with Ruby to destroy her, all Kim did was tell her to do one. But when Kim discovered Will and Rose had slept together it was payback time!
The lady of the manor posed as a mystery blackmailer and threatened to expose Will unless he paid up. As Will dug himself into a deeper financial hole – Kim was doing some digging of her own. She faked a kidnap, then lured Will to the woods, where he discovered a creepy mannequin with Kim’s face on it.
Next Kim forced Will to dig up a coffin she’d buried, before she pushed him in the grave and unveiled herself as his tormentor! It was about as classic Kim as you could get.
She’s since taken Will back, but he’s now secretly planning to get his own back. Hasn’t he forgotten who he’s dealing with?!
Moira underwent life-saving brain surgery (Credit: ITV)
Moira’s brain tumour
What’s wrong with Moira? That was the question on every viewer’s lips as they watched the normally friendly farmer undergo a sudden personality transplant.
Moira’s volatile behaviour, aggressive outbursts and memory lapses were a cause of concern to her loved ones. Cain feared his wife had succumbed to her previous alcohol addiction, but was unaware she had started to experience seizures.
Events came to a head when Moira started experiencing visions of her late nemesis Emma Barton. She threatened Ruby with a shotgun, and caused a near-fatal explosion at Butlers Farm. After seeing Moira suffer a seizure in front of his eyes, Cain forced her to get medical help.
Subsequent tests discovered a mass on Moira’s brain, and she was told she had a meningioma – a type of non cancerous tumour. In November, Emmerdale aired a special episode which followed Moira’s journey as she underwent surgery to have her tumour removed. In a surprising, emotional twist, Moira was reunited with her late daughter Holly during a dream sequence.
The Dingles gathered to say farewell to their beloved patriarch Zak (Credit: ITV)
Emmerdale 2024 best storylines: Zak’s death
We all knew this sad day was coming after the announcement of actor Steve Halliwell’s death in December 2023. And credit to the writers, they gave Zak a memorable and poignant farewell that was befitting of his legendary status.
As per his final wishes, Zak had requested to be buried in Dingle land within 48 hours of his passing. Cain and Sam journeyed to Scotland to bring their dad’s body home and took Zak’s coffin to the Woolie for one last pint with the locals. Afterwards, Zak was drummed up the road to his final resting place, as his family gathered around the graveside.
Many of the Dingles were present for Zak’s send-off, although there were a few notable absences. Yes, Debbie Dingle, we’re talking about you.
Tina’s rowdy arrival certainly brought the drama, but we were all about the quieter, more tender moments. Like new head of the clan Cain getting too choked up to deliver his speech. And Belle requesting Zak be buried with Lisa’s ashes, so her parents would be together forever. Aww.
They’ll never be another Zak Dingle, but we were lucky to have him.
Ross is back and better than ever (Credit: ITV)
The return of Ross Barton
The Barton bad boy has been top of our dream comeback list for a while, so you can imagine our delight when we learnt it was actually happening. During his first stint in the Dales, Ross was often in the thick of the action, and this time looks set to be no different.
Ross was unveiled as Billy Fletcher’s surprise opponent, in the underground boxing match organised by ruthless promotor Jade. Since then he’s found himself caught up in other dangerous situations.
Ross made a deal with Kim Tate that nearly resulted in him killing Will, he let a gun off in son Moses’s presence, and put April’s safety at risk by trying to double-cross Jade. He’s also made an enemy of Mackenzie – perhaps he and John should compare notes.
And then there’s the women. Ross never goes hungry for long – he’s already locked lips with Charity and enjoyed a romp with newcomer Steph. Who’s next?!
Cain and Ruby did a bad, bad thing (Credit: ITV)
Emmerdale 2024 best storylines: Cain and Ruby’s betrayal
Cain’s done a lot of terrible things in his time, but cheating with your brother’s wife while your own missus is undergoing life-saving brain surgery must be a new low.
The pair’s forbidden tryst was one of those shocking OMG moments that no one saw coming and it’s left fans absolutely fuming. Yes, Cain was struggling with his fear of losing Moira. But why on earth did he think having sex with Ruby was going to make the situation any easier?
Unable to cope with his guilt, Cain is now spiralling out of control. But what will happen if his conscience gets the better of him and he decides to ‘fess up to Moira? We’re not sure their marriage could survive another betrayal, especially one on this scale. And god only knows what Caleb would do if he found out.
This ticking time bomb could cause some serious damage.
Ruby is a big favourite with the fans (Credit: ITV)
The rise of Ruby
Emmerdale has suddenly turned into the Ruby Fox-Miligan show, and we’re not mad about it.
The ballsy blonde has been in the soap less than 12 months and has already established herself as one of its leading ladies. She’s also shown she’s not someone to reckon with. So far Ruby has publicly outed Caleb’s affair with Tracy (which she later forgave him for) and orchestrated a plot to destroy Kim Tate. But as well as bringing the drama, Ruby has been busy building herself a life in Emmerdale. She’s made friends and even won over the Dingles.
We’re now learning more about Ruby’s backstory. Her wealthy mother Helen made a brief appearance as viewers watched Caleb blackmail the dying woman to sign over her fortune to her. And now Ruby’s daughter Steph and estranged dad Anthony are on the scene. Ruby has been desperate to reconnect with Steph, but it has been revealed Anthony abused Ruby as a child and could be Steph’s real father.
Recent shock revelations point to 2025 being another huge year for Ruby. Bring it on!
