Emmerdale deaths in 2024 – all the characters that left us this year

2024 has seen the tragic deaths of six characters in Emmerdale. While some of these unlucky souls had only been in the soap a short while, others were long-standing residents of the village.

There wasn’t a dry eye in the Dales as the residents recently gathered for the funeral of Dingle patriarch Zak. And we’re still getting over the shock (and horror) of discovering the young and vivacious Rebecca White has slipped off the mortal coil.

Here’s a full list of everyone we’ve said a final goodbye to this year.

Emmerdale deaths in 2024: Ethan Anderson

Emmerdale viewers tuning in on May 28, 2024 got an unexpected shock when Ethan Anderson suddenly dropped down dead. The vicar’s son’s untimely passing had not been announced prior to transmission, but looking back the clues were all there.

Weeks earlier, Ethan had foolishly got behind the wheel of a car while over the limit. Enroute, he lost control of the vehicle and crashed, causing his passenger Nicky Miligan serious injuries. Ethan then dragged Nicky out of the car and fled the scene, while his friend was left in a coma.

When Nicky’s mum Ruby discovered the truth she targeted Ethan in a revenge attack. She ran the former lawyer down in scenes that were aired during the soap’s milestone Emmerdale’s 10,000th episode. Ethan was hurt, but refused hospital treatment and owned up to the drink driving incident.

On the day of his death, Ethan was due in court to face charges of dangerous driving. But he never made it that far after collapsing following a chat with dad Charles. He was taken to hospital, but there was nothing anyone could do. He’d gone.

Heartbroken Charles was convinced his son had died as a result of being run over, but an autopsy later confirmed Ethan had been killed by a hereditary brain aneurysm.

    Helen’s time on Emmerdale was

    Helen Fox

September saw the arrival and departure of Ruby Fox Miligan‘s estranged mum, Helen – who was killed off after just two episodes! The character was played by iconic actress Sharon Maughan.

Helen had been absent from her daughter’s life since she husband Anthony turfed Ruby out when she was a pregnant teen. But 30 years later, Helen had learnt she was terminally ill and wanted to make amends.

She contacted Ruby, but Caleb intercepted the call. He paid Helen a secret visit in hospital and blackmailed her into transferring £100k in exchange for him getting Ruby to see her. Helen coughed up the cash, but Caleb didn’t tell Ruby about their meeting.

The next day, Ruby was called by a nurse, who alerted her to Helen’s declining health. By the time she got to the hospital Helen had died. The pair never got their chance to make their peace and Ruby was devastated to learn Caleb had kept her mum from her.

Helen’s death paved the way for the arrival of Ruby’s father Anthony and daughter Steph, but we think Emmerdale missed a trick by not keeping her in for longer. Imagine the showdowns!

Emmerdale deaths in 2024: Pearl Ladderbanks

Pearl’s death did not happen on-screen, but fans still mourned the passing of the much-loved local.

Glamorous granny Pearl was a staple of village life between 2003 and 2019. She was married to fellow OAP Len Reynolds and frenemies with god-fearing Edna Birch.

Wherever Pearl went trouble often followed. She got conned into investing in a get-rich-quick scheme and ran up a huge debt borrowing money from Eric Pollard. She also had a spell being a gambling addict, and even faked having Alzheimer’s to excuse her behaviour.

In 2019, it was announced actress Meg Johnson was taking an extended break from the soap due to ill health. Pearl’s absence was explained to viewers that she’d moved to a static caravan in Demdyke, then joined her grandson Owen in Hong Kong.

Meg Johnson died on July 1, 2023 aged 86. Her family released a statement saying she’d been battling dementia. Emmerdale also paid tribute to the star saying she would be ‘greatly missed by everyone who knew her’.

Earlier this year, Owen contacted Pearl’s former boss Rhona Goskirk to let her know his grandmother had died.

    June Phillips

June was an elderly lady who was visited by Ella Forster back in May 2024. Suffering from dementia, June was living in a care home, and had no recollection of Ella. A day after their meeting, Ella returned to see June but was told by the care home receptionist she’d died from a suspected heart attack.

Viewers were already aware Ella was harbouring a dark secret from her past and it was clear June was connected in some way. The truth finally came out at the old lady’s funeral when it was revealed Ella was the childhood friend of June’s daughter, Joanne Phillips.

Ella had unintentionally murdered Joanne in a jealous outburst on the day of her 11th birthday in 2005, and served time in prison for the crime.

The revelation sent shockwaves around the village, but poor June was never mentioned after that. So less of a memorable character, and more of a plot device.

    Rebecca White in Emmerdale

Emmerdale deaths in 2024: Rebecca White

Rebecca White’s death was another one that left us all shook.

When Ross Barton returned to the village in the autumn, we assumed his girlfriend Rebecca wouldn’t be far behind. But no. According to Ross, Rebecca is no more.

During a catch up with ex Charity, Ross dropped the bombshell that Rebecca’s heart stopped during a routine medical procedure and attempts to revive her were unsuccessful. He explained he and Rebecca were no longer a couple, but had remained amicable for Seb’s sake. The poor lad had been in Ross’s care when the tragedy happened, but was taken away a week later to live with an aunt of Rebecca’s in Bristol.

Rebecca was introduced to the village in 2016 as the sassy younger sister of Chrissie, and immediately put the cat amongst the pigeons. She had a one-night stand with Robert Sugden, the product of which was little Seb. She also survived an attempt on her life by twisted nephew Lachlan.

All in all Bex was a great character and someone we wouldn’t have been sad to see return. Killing her off has killed that opportunity.

    Zak Dingle

The saddest goodbye of the year was the one we had to say to the one and only Zak Dingle.

Following actor Steve Halliwell‘s death in December 2023, the Emmerdale writers came up with a fitting end for the character he’d played for over 28 years.

After news came from Scotland of the Dingle patriarch’s passing, Cain and Sam travelled up there to bring their dad’s body home to Emmerdale. Following Zak’s wish to be buried in Dingle land within 48 hours, the family escorted his coffin to The Woolpack for one last pint. Zak was then drummed up the road on his final journey.

Proceedings were almost derailed by Tina Dingle’s rowdy arrival and Cain being too choked up to deliver his speech. But in the end Zak was laid to rest along with the ashes of his late wife Lisa.

    Will Taylor

On Christmas Day there was devastation at Home Farm as Will Taylor suffered a heart attack. He and Kim Tate had just renewed their wedding vows, but then Joe Tate arrived and exposed the fact Will had been plotting with him and Peter to bring Kim down. It was poor timing as Will had actually changed his mind and decided he did love Kim and tried to call the plan off.

But Kim didn’t believe him and left him clutching his chest as he began to suffer pains. In a brilliant throwback to the death of Frank Tate, Kim powdered her nose!

However, when she realised it was for real, she sprang into action, and tried to give Will CPR. Sadly it was no use and Will was pronounced dead. The fallout from his death is set to be huge with both Joe and Kim coming under suspicion for his murder. However, some fans are convinced Will’s not really dead and it’s just an elaborate plot…

11 best Emmerdale Christmas episodes – jilted weddings, sinister murders, haunted ghosts, and a child is born

Christmas in Soapland is the gift that keeps on giving, and Emmerdale has treated us to some spectacular seasonal episodes.

Along with the usual turkey, trimmings and tantrums, December 25th in the village often brings the most dramatic births, marriages and deaths.

So here are our picks of the 11 best Emmerdale Christmas moments…

Lisa and Zak Dingle with their daughter Belle

Emmerdale best Christmas episodes: Vic dies and Belle is born 1998

Birth and death was the theme for the Emmerdale 1998 Christmas episode.

Postmaster Vic Windsor was killed off in a bungled armed robbery by Andy Sugden’s dad, Billy Hopwood. A fight ensued after Vic caught Billy trying to break into his Post Office safe. Billy – who was armed with a shotgun – threatened Vic, then pushed him into a set of shelves. Critically injured by the impact, Vic pleaded with Billy to ring an ambulance, but the cowardly criminal scarpered. Poor Vic was left to die alone, as 11.1 million tuned in to mourn the passing of one of their favourite characters.

While Vic was breathing his last, over at Wishing Well Cottage the Dingles were receiving a surprise delivery. Belle entered the world after Lisa gave birth in the family’s pigsty. But the biggest shock was she didn’t even she was she pregnant. No wonder why Zak fainted at the sight of his wife cradling their newborn daughter!

Bernice and Ashley tie the knot 2000

Ashley and Bernice’s sweet love story led them all the way to the altar on Christmas Day 2000.

Fans had waited a long time to see the vicar and barmaid say I do, and the service was watched by an audience of almost 10 million. Bernice looked beautiful in a traditional ivory gown and veil, while Ashley was dapper in his dog collar. In a break with usual tradition, the wedding went without a hitch.

But sadly the fairytale wasn’t to last. Less than a year later, Ashley and Bernice’s marriage was over after she confessed to an affair with sexy chef Carlos Diaz.

Louise Appleton and her stalker Ray in Emmerdale

Louise Appleton kills her stalker boyfriend 2002

Danger loomed in the 2002 festive episode when Woolpack landlady Louise Appleton discovered the identity of her secret stalker.

Louise was being hounded by creepy messages from a mystery tormenter, but had no idea it was actually her boyfriend, Ray Mullen. Having convinced Louise she was in danger, Ray then persuaded her to move away with him to Italy.

As Christmas Day arrived, the couple left Emmerdale and were on their way to the airport. But the journey took a sinister turn when Louise realised Ray was the one who’d been making her life hell.

She fought back and Ray lost control of the wheel, forcing the car off the road. With Ray knocked unconscious, Louise managed to flee the scene and make it back to the village, but he wasn’t far behind.

The drama continued on Boxing Day when Ray arrived at Mill Cottage for a final showdown with Louise. A violent fight ensued, which resulted in Louise killing her evil boyfriend.

Louise was now a murderer, but got away with it after her friend Terry Woods helped make it look as if Ray had died by accident.

Emmerdale best Christmas episodes: Who killed Tom King 2006

Tom King’s murder stands out as one of Emmerdale’s finest Christmas episodes.

The nasty King patriarch was killed at Home Farm on the day of his wedding to Rosemary Sinclair. Tom was getting ready for the reception in an upstairs bedroom when he was confronted by a shadowy figure. An argument broke out and Tom was bludgeoned with a bronze ornament before being shoved through a window. He fell to his death in front of the shocked locals, who were gathered to celebrate his big day.

The shock murder sparked a huge whodunnit, but the suspect list was rather long due to the amount of enemies Tom had. Those in the frame included Tom’s three sons, Jimmy, Matthew and Carl, and even his new bride Rosemary.

Fans had to wait a whole five months before it was revealed that Carl was the killer. He’d finished his father off after Tom threatened to disinherit him unless he dumped girlfriend, Chas Dingle.

Victoria falls through the icy lake 2008

Christmas 2008 was nearly Victoria’s last after she fell through a freezing lake.

Vic had been out drinking in the grounds of Home Farm with her mates when she stepped onto a frozen lake. Suddenly the ice beneath her gave way and the teen was plunged into the sub zero waters.

She was saved by Daz Eden’s quick-thinking actions, as he risked his own life to rescue Victoria. When she regained consciousness, Victoria revealed she’d seen a body floating in the murky lake.

The corpse turned out to be rapist police officer Shane Doyle, who had been murdered weeks previously by Jasmine Thomas.

Chas Dingle jilts Carl King at the altar on Christmas Day

Chas jilts Carl at the altar 2010

Emmerdale love a festive wedding drama – and Chas Dingle and Carl King‘s disastrous 2010 nuptials definitely delivered.

The pair’s toxic relationship imploded after Chas learnt Carl had been bedding barmaid Eve Jenson. Charity urged her cousin to take the cheating toe rag for every penny – which is exactly what she did! Chas popped the question to Carl and pretended she was pregnant with his kid. A wedding was swiftly arranged and Chas asked Eve to be her bridesmaid, putting her in a revolting peach puffball dress to ensure maximum humiliation.

With the stage set, Chas then dumped Carl in front of the entire congregation, outing his betrayal with Eve and revealing there was no baby. Now that’s how you do revenge.

Emmerdale best Christmas episodes: Robert sabotages Andy and Katie’s wedding 2014

Andy Sugden and Katie Addyman hoped it would be second time lucky when they set the date for December 25, 2014. Vengeful Robert had other ideas.

Unable to back down in the bitter war with his brother and the woman he’d once loved, Robert had already given Andy a black eye before his big day. But he wasn’t going to stop there.

As Andy and Katie exchanged vows at the altar they were horrified to realise Robert had sabotaged their rings. Inside her gold band was inscribed the words ‘village bike’, while Andy had ‘village idiot’ inside of his.

But Robert wasn’t the only one who tried to disrupt the nuptials. Andy’s broken-hearted ex Bernice Blackstock also screamed abuse at the congregation of St Mary’s and had to be restrained by Diane.

Despite all the interruptions, Katie and Andy did actually get end up getting wed – but what a day!

    Robert’s dream sequence 2017

Robert Sugden took centre stage in 2017, in a festive offering that marked a change of direction for Emmerdale.

In a break away from the traditional style storytelling, the episode acted as a standalone one. It was described by Emmerdale’s then boss Iain MacLeod as “Groundhog Day meets A Christmas Carol with a little nod to the film Don’t Look Now.”

The episode saw Robert wake up multiple times on Christmas morning, facing a different reality each time. In each sequence, Robert was visited by the ghosts of Christmas future, as he saw the impact of his selfish and reckless behaviour.

Returning to present day, Robert made a desperate attempt to right his wrongs, hoping to rekindle his romance with on/off lover Aaron Dingle.

The installment really broke barriers for soap, and was enjoyed by 5.1 viewers. Unfortunately they didn’t get the Christmas gift of a Robron reunion, but that followed shortly afterwards.

Paddy and Chas say I do 2020

Who can forget Christmas 2020, aka the one where we were all in lockdown? But amidst the Covid pandemic gloom came a ray of light in the form of Paddy Kirk and Chas Dingle’s festive nuptials.

Paddy had decided to surprise Chas with a romantic wedding and had been busy making plans to ensure the day was perfect. But it nearly didn’t go ahead after Chas suggested Christmas weddings were cursed, and Paddy quickly cancelled.

When Chas realised what Paddy had been planning she had a sudden change of heart. She summoned Paddy to the church, where she asked him to marry her! The couple exchanged vows in an intimate ceremony with only Marlon, Aaron and Bear in attendance. And Chas looked stunning in a gorgeous red dress that Paddy had purchased specially.

Afterwards, the happy couple returned to The Woolpack, which had been transformed into a winter wonderland, and enjoyed their first dance as husband and wife.

But Al had a secret agenda – he and evil boss Gavin were planning to close down the Woolie and turn the building into swanky flats. Under pressure to deliver, Al torched the soap’s iconic boozer. The flames quickly took hold leading to an almighty explosion!

    Charity kills Damon Harris 2023

Last Christmas was one Charity Dingle will never forget – but for all the wrong reasons! Charity shot and killed Damon ‘Harry’ Harris to stop him murdering her husband, Mackenzie Boyd.

In the lead up to Christmas, Harry had kidnapped and tortured Mack as payback for him dumping his daughter. Bit extreme, no? Harry fully intended to finish Mack off (with Chloe watching), but Charity got wind of what was going on.

She tailed Harry back to the dingy warehouse where he was holding Mack. Watching from the shadows, Charity witnessed Harry drawing a gun from his pocket to use on Mack.

  • 14 top Emmerdale episodes in 2024 – all the greatest moments from this year

14 top Emmerdale episodes in 2024 – all the greatest moments from this year

Emmerdale has given us another year of fantastic drama with dark twists, killer secrets, explosive stunts and steamy affairs, but which were the top episodes of 2024?

With hundreds of episodes to choose from, it was almost impossible to select our favourites from 2024. But we’ve managed to narrow it down to 14.

So here are our top picks from this year…

Belle and Tom get married in Emmerdale
Belle’s dream wedding turned into a nightmare (Credit: ITV)

Best 2024 Emmerdale episodes: Belle and Tom’s wedding day

Belle’s year from hell began with her nightmare wedding to Tom.

Fans were desperate for Belle to call the whole thing off after witnessing her then-fiancé’s controlling behaviour. And even on the morning of the wedding, Belle was having doubts. But a last-minute text from Tom convinced her to go ahead with the marriage.

The actual ceremony ran fairly smoothly, but the same couldn’t be said for the reception. The event descended in chaos after vengeful Ruby decided to expose Caleb and Tracy’s affair in front of all the guests. Tom did not approve of Ruby’s floor show, nor was he a fan of the Dingles’ quirky wedding traditions – which included supping ale from a welly.

Later, the newlyweds returned home to consummate their marriage. But when Belle asked if she could read a letter from her late mum Lisa, jealous Tom exploded – launching a tirade of cruel abuse against his wife and new in-laws.

Claiming he’d made a terrible mistake by marrying her, Tom stormed upstairs to bed, leaving Belle to spend her wedding night on the sofa.

Belle started the holiday with such high hopes (Credit: ITV)

    Belle’s holiday from hell

At the height of Tom’s reign of terror he took Belle and their pet pooch Piper for a ‘romantic’ getaway to a remote cottage in Wales. His motive, of course, was to isolate Belle from her loved ones. Cain and Charity realised Belle was in danger and dashed to Wales. They discovered the cottage had been trashed, with blood stains on the wall and Belle nowhere to be seen.

The shock discovery led fans to fear Belle had been murdered by her evil husband.

Her fate was finally confirmed in a tense two-hander. It flashbacked to four days earlier and showed how the trip away had spiraled into the holiday from hell. Behind closed doors, Tom continually terrorised Belle and Piper. He made the defenseless dog sleep outside in the cold, and attacked Belle over her decision to have an abortion.

Pushed to her limits, Belle eventually snapped. She took Piper and made a break for it, locking Tom inside the cottage – which he then turned over in anger.

As the episode ended, Belle and Piper were seen driving off in a bus as Tom chased behind. If only that had been the last we’d seen of him.

Best 2024 Emmerdale episodes: Rhona takes down Gus in court

We love a good courtroom drama – and Rhona served us up a right treat back in April.

Earlier that month Rhona had been acquitted of kidnapping baby Ivy. Next it was Gus’s turn to stand trial for stealing Rhona’s embryos, which were used to impregnant his late wife Lucy – the result of which was little Ivy.

Despite all he had put her through, Rhona had agreed to read out a statement of support for her ex-husband.

However, Rhona made a snap decision to expose Gus’s crimes and told the courtroom he was planning to flee to France with Ivy. Justice prevailed and the judge handed down an eight-year prison sentence on Gus.

Marlon was mad with his wife for not telling him what she was going to do. But we don’t think Rhona owed anyone an explanation.

Belle looks into the distance fear and worry on her face (Credit: ITV)
Belle was haunted by visions of her imagined futures (Credit: ITV)

    Belle’s imagined futures

In September, Emmerdale took Belle’s abuse storyline in a new direction with an inspired ‘imagined futures’ episode.

By this point Belle was a shell of her former self, completely broken by Tom’s sustained campaign of terror. And as she wandered around the village in a dazed state, she envisioned three possible ways her life could end up.

In her first future, Belle pretended to take Tom back in order to stop his new girlfriend Amelia from suffering the same fate. Belle then told Tom it was all a trick, but as the clock went forward to Christmas – she was five months pregnant and still under his control.

The second imagining saw Belle expose Tom in the middle of The Woolpack. Cain overheard and beat Tom to near death. He was arrested for attempted murder, but to Belle’s horror all the locals believed Tom was the victim – not her.

Finally, the third scenario saw Belle getting on with her life while Tom made Amelia’s a misery. In the end, Amelia was carried out of Dale Head in a body bag, with Tom claiming she’d fallen down the stairs. The truth, of course, was more chilling.

The episode ended with the return to present day, as Belle found the courage to confide in Charity about Tom’s true nature.

Could Ella end up in prison?
Ella is a convicted child killer (Credit: ITV)

Best 2024 Emmerdale episodes: Ella is outed as a killer

One of the most shocking twists of 2024 was the revelation that Ella Forster was a convicted child killer.

Viewers had already worked out Ella was harbouring a secret from her past. First came the cagey, strange behaviour then there were the mysterious trips to an elderly lady called June, who was in a care home in the late stages of dementia.

All was revealed in May at June’s funeral when one of the mourners branded Ella a ‘killer’.

It transpired that on her 11th birthday, Ella murdered her childhood best friend Joanne (and June’s daughter) in a jealous rage. She had spent years in prison for the crime and was given a new identity after her release.

The chilling revelation marked the end of Ella’s romance with Dr Liam Cavanagh and made her the outcast of the village.

Moira and Ruby in the barn explosion
Moira sparked a huge explosion at Butlers barn (Credit: ITV)

    The Butler’s barn explosion

Emmerdale always delivers with their stunts and the explosion at Butlers was another triumph!

Moira Barton started the blaze by accident while in the grips of a psychotic episode (which viewers later learnt was caused by a brain tumour). In her confused state, the farmer was haunted by visions of her late nemesis Emma Barton.

After threatening Ruby Fox-Miligan with a shotgun, a tussle ensued and the weapon went off. The bullet hit a lightbulb and sparked an inferno that quickly engulfed the barn. Moira and Ruby were trapped with no way out, so Mackenzie Boyd and John Sugden risked their own lives in order to rescue them.

Cain also tried to get inside the barn, but was knocked back by a huge fireball. By some miracle everyone lived to tell the tale.

    Best 2024 Emmerdale episodes: Emmerdale’s 10,000th episode

On May 22, 2024, Emmerdale aired its 10,000th episode and marked the milestone celebration in style. It had a bit of everything – a near-fatal hit and run, one couple getting caught in the act, a sweet nod to the past and a missing lamb.

The locals were brought together for a big village fete, which was organised by Nicola King. But danger was lurking when vengeful Ruby Fox-Miligan decided to punish Ethan Anderson for the car crash that almost killed her son Nicky. She mowed Ethan down then drove away!

Meanwhile, the villagers got involved with a scarecrow making competition – with ones made in tribute to former residents Seth Armstrong, Betty Eagleton and Edna Birch.

Over in one of the local barns, Charity and Mackenzie were enjoying a roll around in the hay when they were interrupted by the arrival of folk looking for Isaac Dingle’s pet lamb, Minty. Awkward!

But the day ended on a high when Minty was discovered alive and well by unlikely saviour Kim Tate. Hurrah!

Cain cheats with Ruby while Moira undergoes brain surgery

In November, Emmerdale aired an emotional installment which followed Moira as she underwent life-saving surgery to remove a tumour from her brain.

It was an episode full of surprises, and the first one came when viewers got a glimpse into Moira’s dreams. As she slipped into unconsciousness, Moira returned to her happy place at Butlers Farm with Isaac and Kyle. Moira sat down in the sunshine and turned to see her late daughter Holly – who died from a heroin overdose – was by her side.

The heartfelt reunion was an acting masterclass from Natalie J Robb and Sophie Powles, who were last seen on screen together in 2016. Moira and Holly exchanged heartfelt words and hugged, before Moira’s thoughts were interrupted by the sound of her surgeon’s voice.

Meanwhile back in the village, Cain was in bits over the prospect of losing his wife on the operating table. But that didn’t stop him screwing sister-in-law Ruby in the garage.

Fans flocked to social media to express their disgust at the pair’s shock betrayal, with some saying it the worst thing Cain has ever done.

Emmerdale's Dingles and Kim are mourning Zak in the pub

Best 2024 Emmerdale episodes: Zak’s final farewell

There wasn’t a dry eye in the Dales as the locals gathered to say a final, poignant farewell to Zak Dingle. The Emmerdale icon was written out of the show 10 months after the real-life passing of actor Steve Halliwell.

Zak’s family planned his funeral according to his last wishes. The patriarch wanted to be buried in the Dingle land within 48 hours of his death and take one last journey through the village.

Cain, Sam and the rest of the clan took Zak’s coffin to The Woolpack and raised a toast to him. After a good old sing song it was time for Zak to be drummed up the road to be buried alongside his late wife Lisa.

There were moments of high drama – Tina’s rowdy arrival – and unexpected tenderness – Cain getting too emosh to deliver his eulogy. But mainly the episode left fans asking one question: where were all the other Dingles?

    Kim is Will’s blackmailer

2024 marked the welcome return of Queen Kim, as she was unveiled as Will’s mystery blackmailer. After discovering her husband had cheated with ex-wife Rose, Kim plotted a revenge scheme reminiscent of her glory days.

For weeks, she tormented Will with anonymous messages, threatening to expose his betrayal unless he paid up. He was forced to sign over his shares in the haulage yard to Caleb, unaware that he was handing money over to his wife.

Viewers were also kept in the dark about the identity of Will’s blackmailer, even though we all knew in our hearts it had to be Kim.

For her final act, Kim faked her own kidnap then lured Will into the woods. There, he discovered a creepy mannequin lying on the ground with his wife’s face on it.

The big (or not so big) reveal came after Will had dug up a coffin, and was then whacked over the head with a shovel. As he lay unconscious in the ground, Kim stood over with a look of pure satisfaction on her face. A lesson to cheating fellas everywhere!

Best 2024 Emmerdale episodes: Mandy and Paddy say I do

These two gave us a rare moment of joy when they became husband and wife (again!) in August. But the wedding very nearly didn’t go ahead.

Just hours before they were meant to exchange vows Bear informed Paddy his bride-to-be had been secretly working as a financial dominatrix called Madame Diamante Dales. Bear was adamant his son couldn’t go through with marrying a liar, but Marlon thought Mandy deserved a chance to explain herself. Thankfully Paddy agreed to hear her out.

During an emotional heart-to-heart, Mandy revealed she’d turned to findom as a way of fixing her debt problems. Paddy was hurt she hadn’t been honest but conceded they’d both made silly mistakes.

There was just about enough time left for the couple to dash to the church and exchange vows in front of their loved ones. Afterwards, in The Woolpack, Paddy held his new wife and told her: “This time it’s forever.”

We’d like to believe him, but this is Soapland…

Ross Barton makes his return in Emmerdale
Now that’s how you do a comeback (Credit: ITV)

    Ross Barton returns

The return of fan favourite Ross Barton was a real autumn highlight. After a six years absence, we wondered how the Emmerdale writers would reintroduce Ross to the soap. And they definitely didn’t disappoint.

Ross was unveiled as Billy Fletcher’s ‘beast’ of a competitor in a bare-knuckle brawl organised by dodgy promotor Jade. All rippling muscle and with a lust for danger, we are delighted to see Ross hadn’t lost any of his old charm.

It transpired Ross had been making a name for himself in the underground boxing world. He also proved he was more than a match for Billy. Post-fight, Ross paid a visit to the village to catch up with old friends and family.

Since his comeback at the end of October, Ross has been busy making new enemies and adding more notches to his bedpost. We can’t wait to see what 2025 has in store for him.

April hangs off the roof of a carpark

Best 2024 Emmerdale episodes: April’s kidnap terror

December 5, 2024 is a day poor April Windsor would rather forget. In the space of a few hours she was kidnapped, held over the roof of a multistory carpark and discovered the truth about her mum’s suicide.

The teen was snatched by new villain Jade who wanted payback against Ross Barton. Jade believed Ross had stolen money from her and decided to target his late girlfriend’s daughter. April was abducted and driven to the same carpark where her mum Donna died 15 years earlier. It was a deliberate choice by Jade to cause Ross maximum distress – and boy did it do the trick.

As Ross arrived on the scene he discovered April being held over the edge by Jade’s henchmen. The terrified lass nearly went over, but was saved when Mackenzie and Aaron coughed up £7000 of Jade’s missing £10k. Ross was told he had to pay the rest.

Sadly April’s distress didn’t end there. Ross then revealed Donna’s death that day was avoidable and she’d thrown herself over the car park on purpose in order to bring criminal Gary North to justice.

Is it any wonder April’s going off the rails after hearing news like that?

    Ruby and Anthony arguing Emmerdale
Shocking flashback scenes revealed Ruby was abused by Anthony(Credit: ITV)

    Ruby’s past is revealed

Our award for best newcomer of 2024 goes to Ruby Fox-Miligan. Less than 12 months in and she’s already an Emmerdale icon thanks to actress Beth Cordingly’s knockout performances.

Like all great characters, Ruby has a complex backstory. As a pregnant teen, she was disowned by her parents and subsequently had a troubled relationship with daughter Steph. But the arrival of Ruby’s estranged father Anthony also hinted there was a dark secret lurking in their past. One which was finally revealed during a special flashback episode.

Viewers were transported back to the day of Ruby’s 16th birthday. They watched in horror as the defenceless teen was sexually assaulted by Anthony in her bedroom. They also learnt this wasn’t the first time it had happened.

The shock flashbacks were interspersed with scenes from the present day as Ruby sat in The Woolpack frozen in fear and unable to tell Caleb what happened all those years ago. It’s also raised questions as to whether Steph could be Anthony’s daughter. How much longer before this ticking timebomb explodes?

  • 9 Emmerdale Christmas weddings – family fallouts, a festive murder and a few happy endings (sort of)

9 Emmerdale Christmas weddings – family fallouts, a festive murder and a few happy endings (sort of)

Nothing says Christmas in soap like action-packed weddings, and Emmerdale has gifted us some highly memorable ones.

During the soap’s 52 year history no fewer than seven couples have got spliced over the festive period. It would have been nine if it wasn’t for Chas Dingle dumping cheating Carl King at the altar, and another groom dying on his wedding day.

Let’s take a look back at these festive weddings and relive all the shocks and surprises…

Kim Tate and Frank Tate get married in Emmerdale

Emmerdale Christmas weddings: Frank and Kim Tate

Frank and Kim hoped it would be second time lucky when they said I do on December 22, 1994. The couple’s first marriage had ended in divorce following Kim’s affair with handsome stockbroker, Neil Kincaid. But they were reunited after Frank saved Kim’s life during the plane crash of 1993.

In a break from the usual setting of St Mary’s, Kim and Frank opted to get hitched outside of Emmerdale in the rather grand Ripon Cathedral. Keen horse-woman Kim looked breathtaking in a corseted high-necked lace gown complete with a white dressage hat and veil.

The ceremony was followed by dinner and dancing, as the locals gathered to wish the newlyweds well. But the day ended on a sour note when Frank went to present Kim with her wedding gift – an expensive car – and found the motor had been nicked!

Linda Glover and Biff Fowler's wedding in Emmerdale
Biff and Linda’s big day ended in tragedy (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)

    Linda Glover and Biff Fowler

Linda and Biff’s 1996 wedding day was full of drama, from beginning to end. First up the groom-to-be woke up nursing a huge hangover, which was not made any better by Seth Armstrong‘s herbal-cure-all-remedy.

Then Biff’s mum Sandra rocked up and tried to talk her son out of going ahead with the wedding, but thankfully she didn’t succeed. Biff and Linda exchanged vows in front of their nearest and dearest, while Jack Sugden acted as their wedding photographer.

Earlier in the day Biff had learnt that his best mate, and Linda’s brother, Dave was planning to run away with Kim Tate. He caught up with Dave at the reception and begged him to reconsider. But tragedy struck that night as Dave was killed rescuing Kim’s baby son James from a fire at Home Farm.

So what should have been the happiest day of Linda and Biff’s lives turned out to be one of the worst.

Bernice Blackstock and Ashley Thomas get married in Emmerdale
Ashley and Bernice’s happy ever after did not last long (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)

    Bernice Blackstock and Ashley Thomas

Ashley and Bernice were total opposites, but their adorable love story captured a nation. Nearly 10 million viewers tuned in to see the ditsy barmaid marry her vicar on Christmas Day 2000.

Unlike the majority of Emmerdale weddings, this one actually went without a hitch. Even Bernice’s estranged father, Rodney, managed to watch the ceremony without causing scene.

Bernice looked radiant in an ivory gown and veil, and carried a bouquet of red roses. And proud groom Ashley donned his traditional dog collar.

Unfortunately the couple’s happy ever after wasn’t to be. Less than a year after promising to remain faithful, Bernice was unable to resist the lure of sexy chef Carlos Diaz. She fell pregnant and gave birth to baby Gabby, who had to undergo a DNA test to determine who her daddy was. Classy stuff.

Tom and Rosemary King on their wedding day in Emmerdale

Emmerdale Christmas weddings: Tom King and Rosemary Sinclair

Tom and Rosemary were as vile as one another, in other words the perfect match. Nearly everyone was opposed to them as a couple, particularly Tom’s sons Jimmy, Matthew and Carl who believed Rosemary was a gold-digger.

However, Tom was serious about Rosemary, and proved this by asking her to marry him. Their wedding date was set for Christmas Day 2006, with a church wedding and lavish after party at Home Farm.

The actual ceremony went without a hitch and was rather romantic. But it was the shocking events that unfolded at the reception that have gone down in Emmerdale history.

Tom was getting ready in his bedroom when a shadowy figure entered. An argument broke out, and Tom was pushed to his death through the upstairs window. His horrifying murder sparked the soap’s biggest ever whodunit, and even Tom’s new bride Rosemary found herself in the frame.

In the end Carl was revealed as the killer.

Alicia and David get married in Emmerdale
The odds were stacked against David and Alicia on their wedding day (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)

    Alicia Gallagher and David Metcalfe

Alicia and David took centre stage when they tied the knot during Emmerdale’s 2013 festive episode. The couple’s decision to get married on Christmas Day did not please everyone, particularly David’s ex Priya Sharma, who was expecting his baby at the time.

But Priya wasn’t the only problem Alicia and David had to contend with.

On the morning of the nuptials. David was struck down by a grim sickness bug and panicked he wouldn’t be able to make it through the ceremony without puking. Alicia found her boiler had broken so couldn’t get ready at home. She went over to The Woolpack where future stepmum Val Pollard offered to style her hair, then burnt it!

There was also a last-minute dress disaster, but Alicia and David did end the day as husband and wife.

Katie and Andy Sugden get married in Emmerdale

Emmerdale Christmas weddings: Katie Addyman and Andy Sugden

Christmas Day 2014 marked the second trip down the aisle for Andy Sugden and Katie Addyman. The couple’s first marriage was destroyed by Katie’s affair with brother-in-law Robert. And 10 years later he was out to cause trouble again.

Days before the wedding, Andy got into a punch up with Robert, which resulted in the groom getting a black eye. But Robert was about to add insult to injury. As Katie and Andy exchanged vows in the church they discovered Robert had sabotaged their wedding rings. Inside Katie’s ring was inscribed the words ‘village bike’, and Andy had ‘village idiot’ inside his.

But Robert wasn’t the only local who wanted to cause a scene. Andy’s jealous ex-girlfriend Bernice Blackstock crashed the service and started screaming abuse at everyone. She had to be carted off by mum Diane to calm down.

By some miracle the couple did eventually get married, but their love story ended in tragedy two months later when Katie was killed by Robert.

Chas and Paddy get married in Emmerdale

    Chas Dingle and Paddy Kirk

Christmas 2020, aka the one where we were all in lockdown, was a difficult time for millions. But Paddy and Chas brought the joy with their heartfelt wedding.

Paddy decided the holiday season was the perfect time to make an honest woman out of Chas. He secretly arranged every detail of their surprise wedding. but when Chas suggested Christmas weddings were cursed, he panicked and called it off.

Chas felt awful when she realised what Paddy had been up to. Deciding that getting hitched at Christmas wasn’t so bad after all, Chas popped on the gorgeous red gown he’d bought her and summoned Paddy to St Mary’s, where she asked him to marry her!

In front of a congregation of three (Paddy’s best mate Marlon, his dad Bear and Chas’s son Aaron), the happy couple exchanged vows. Afterwards they went back to The Woolpack, which the locals had transformed into a winter wonderland.

Matthew King and Anna De Souza's wedding in Emmerdale
Carl King wrecked his brother’s wedding day (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)

And the ones that didn’t happen: Matthew King and Anna De Souza

It seemed ladies man Matthew King had finally been tamed when he popped the question to Anna De Souza. But Anna’s father, Donald – who was a rival of the King clan – refused to give his blessing.

Weeks before the wedding, Donald and Matthew got into a heated row. Donald suffered a heart attack and Matthew stood and watched him die instead of trying to help save him. The coroner ruled Donald had died from natural causes, but Matthew’s brother Carl knew what really happened.

Carl hated Matthew anyway so seized the chance to ruin his happiness. He gatecrashed Matthew and Anna’s big day and exposed the groom’s shameful secret to everyone. Unsurprisingly Anna didn’t fancy marrying Matthew after learning what he’d done to her dad. She dumped him at the altar and fled.

In revenge, Matthew tried to mow Carl down in a van, but ended up careering into a wall. He died at the scene of the crash, in Anna’s arms.

    Chas Dingle and Carl King

Chas jilting love rat Carl King at the altar was the best Christmas gift fans could have asked for. The landlady had discovered her boyfriend was bedding barmaid Eve Jenson (the granddaughter of Edna Birch). But instead of just dumping him, Chas decided to bide her time to take revenge on Carl.

With cousin Charity in on her plan, Chas told Carl she was pregnant. The couple got engaged and set the date for Christmas Day 2010. Chas made all the arrangements for their festive nuptials, making sure no expense was spared. Carl was happy to meet her every wish, while Chas secretly pocketed his dosh in the process.

As the wedding day arrived, Chas waited until Carl was stood at the altar before exposing Carl’s betrayal to the entire congregation. Chas also announced she wasn’t actually pregnant and the whole thing had been a scam to extort money.

  • Emmerdale Christmas births and deaths – unexpected arrivals and dramatic departures

Emmerdale Christmas births and deaths – unexpected arrivals and dramatic departures

Births and deaths have been the theme for many a Christmas in Emmerdale. It’s a favourite time of year to welcome new life into the village, as well as killing off other characters.

Take last festive season for example. It saw the birth of Dawn and Billy Fletcher‘s son, Evan, then just days later, gangster Damon Harris was shot dead by Charity Dingle.  And it’s not a new tradition either – the soap had its first Christmas Day baby back in 1998, and its first festive fatality over 30 years ago.

Here’s a full run down of all the Emmerdale hatches and dispatches that have happened at Christmas.

    Emmerdale Christmas births: Belle Dingle

For Christmas 1998 Emmerdale gave fans the best surprise present – baby Belle Dingle.

But it wasn’t only the viewers who were shocked by the tot’s unexpected arrival. Mum Lisa Dingle didn’t even realise she was pregnant before her contractions kicked in while she was tending to one of the family’s poorly pigs.

Thankfully she wasn’t alone. Vet Paddy Kirk was by Lisa’s side and helped deliver Belle into the world. Paddy rushed back into Wishing Well and summoned the family outside. And there, lying in a manger (well, a pigsty) was Lisa cradling her newborn daughter.

Stunned Zak was lost for words at the sight of his seventh child and fainted on the spot!

    Gabby Thomas

Bernice might look like a picture of serenity, cradling her newborn daughter Gabby, but there was a lot of angst and drama surrounding the tot’s arrival into the world.

The Woolpack landlady went into labour on the morning of Christmas Day during a row with her estranged husband Reverend Ashley Thomas. Their marriage was in crisis after Bernice had admitted to an affair with Spanish chef Carlos Diaz.

Unsure whose child she was carrying, Bernice allowed Ashley to accompany her to the hospital, but also requested Carlos’s presence there. As Bernice’s contractions intensified in the delivery suite, outside things were kicking off. Nicola took a swing at Carlos, while Bernice’s parents Rodney and Diane were tearing strips off one another.

Little Gabby was born that same day. Bernice was over the moon, as were the two potential fathers. A DNA test later confirmed Gabby was Ashley’s and Carlos quit the village not long after.

    Emmerdale Christmas births: Evan Fletcher

Christmas came early for Dawn and Billy Fletcher with the birth of their beautiful baby boy, Evan.

Dawn went into labour on December 21, 2023 in the middle of the village Christmas fair. Billy was elsewhere, so Dawn had to lean on enemy Aaron Dingle for support as her contractions kicked in. Although to be fair to Aaron, he did a good job given the awkward circumstances.

The mum-to-be made it back to Home Farm in time to have the water birth she’d been longing for. Billy was by Dawn’s side as she delivered a son, who they named Evan, after his paternal grandfather.

The first year of Evan’s life has been a highly traumatic one after the tot was diagnosed with leukemia. But the brave little soul has proved what a fighter he is and even came home in time for Christmas.

Leonard died in the Emmerdale plane crash

    Emmerdale Christmas deaths: Leonard Kempinski

The Emmerdale plane crash, also known as the Beckindale air disaster, marked a huge turning point in the soap’s history. The episode aired on December 30, 1993 and was watched by an audience of 18 million – its highest ever viewing figures.

The village was partly destroyed when an airliner crashed into the surrounding countryside. Farmer Joe Sugden was driving his mum Annie Sugden and her husband Leonard Kempinski to the airport when he had to swerve the car to avoid debris from the doomed plane. The impact of the crash killed Leonard, and left Annie in a coma for three months.

Leonard wasn’t the only local to lose his life that night. The plane crash also claimed three others – Elizabeth Pollard (Eric’s second wife), Zoe Tate’s former boyfriend Archie Brooks and local father Mark Hughes.

It also left Home Farm heir Chris Tate with life-changing injuries that resulted in him being wheelchair-bound for the rest of his life.

Dave Glover died at Christmas in Emmerdale
Gorgeous Dave met a fiery end (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)

    Emmerdale Christmas deaths: Dave Glover

Dave played with fire by sleeping with lady of the manor Kim Tate. And he ended up getting burnt. Very badly.

Kim and the handsome farmhand had an on/off affair behind her husband Frank’s back for two years. When Kim discovered she was pregnant in December 1995 she didn’t know who the father was. She loved Dave, but when Frank offered her a million pounds to ditch her lover, and put his name on the birth certificate, Kim chose the cash.

Baby James was born the following year, and a DNA test later confirmed he was Frank’s. Despite all this, Kim couldn’t give up Dave, and vice versa. The duo decided they’d run away and start a new life together, but never made it that far.

On Christmas Day 1996, a fire broke out in James’s nursery at Home Farm. Dave battled through the flames to save the tot and was able to pass him through a window, but he wasn’t so lucky. He made it to hospital, but died from his injuries the following day.

    Vic Windsor dies in Emmerdale

    Emmerdale Christmas deaths: Vic Windsor

Christmas Day 1998 marked Belle Dingle’s first on earth, and postmaster Vic Windsor’s last.

The much-loved character was killed off in an armed robbery, carried out by Andy Sugden‘s jailbird dad, Billy Hopwood. The crook needed money for his new planned life abroad with Andy and decided to burgle the Post Office on its quietest day of the year. But he didn’t bank on Vic catching him red-handed.

The crook was armed with a shotgun and threatened to pull the trigger on Vic. A tussle ensued, Vic went crashing into a set of shelves and was fatally injured. He pleaded with Billy to call for help, but the thief scarpered, leaving Vic to die alone.

11.1 million heartbroken fans watched his passing and mourned his loss.

Louise killed her stalker Rat in Emmerdale

    Ray Mullen

Evil stalker Ray Mullen met a grisly end on Boxing Day 2003, but we can’t say he didn’t deserve it.

The creepy businessman was the boyfriend of Woolpack landlady Louise Appleton. But what she didn’t realise was that he was also her stalker. For months, Louise had been bombarded by threatening letters from a mystery tormenter. Having made Louise terrified for her safety, Ray then persuaded her to move away with him to Italy.

After saying their goodbyes, the couple made their getaway on Christmas Day. But enroute Louise realised what kind of monster Ray really was. She fought back and their car careered off the road. Ray was knocked out cold and Louise fled the scene. But her nightmare was far from over.

The drama continued on Boxing Day when Ray reappeared at Mill Cottage for a final, deadly showdown. The pair fought and Louise ended up killing Ray in an act of self defence. Her pal Terry Woods discovered the scene of carnage, and helped Louise make it look as if Ray had died by accident to avoid her getting charged.

It worked and Louise got away with murder.

    Emmerdale Christmas deaths: Tom King

As far as Emmerdale Christmas episodes go, Tom King’s festive murder in 2006 is one of the finest.

The King patriarch had just married gold-digging Rosemary Sinclair – much to the horror of his sons. The reception at Home Farm was in full swing, but the day was about to take a sinister turn.

Tom was upstairs when a shadowy figure entered his bedroom and attacked him with a bronze statue. Seconds later, Tom came crashing through the window in front of his horrified guests. He died of a broken neck.

His shocking murder sparked the soap’s biggest ever whodunit, with many of the locals in the frame. The investigation went on for months before Tom’s son Carl was unmasked as the killer.

    Matthew King

Matthew met his maker on December 16, 2008 – the day of his ill-fated wedding to Anna De Souza.

The shocking events unfolded after Matthew’s brother Carl crashed the nuptials at Home Farm. Carl informed Anna that Matthew had watched her dad Donald die weeks earlier and refused to help him.

Shattered by the revelation, Anna fled the ceremony, while Matthew and Carl had a furious punch up. Matthew then got behind the wheel of a white van and attempted to mow his brother down.

Carl jumped out of the way and Matthew swerved the vehicle to avoid hitting Anna, but crashed into a wall and was catapulted through the windscreen.

Although fatally injured, Matthew was able to tell Anna he loved her one last time before he died in her arms.

    Emmerdale Christmas deaths: Damon Harris

Last Christmas Charity Dingle became a killer when she accidentally shot gangster Damon ‘Harry’ Harris dead. And it was all Mackenzie Boyd‘s fault!

Mack had an affair with Harry’s daughter, Chloe. But when he dumped her to go back to Charity, Harry swore his revenge. He kidnapped Mack and held him hostage in a deserted warehouse. After torturing his victim, Harry plotted to kill Mack.

He pulled out a gun and was about to pull the trigger when Charity (who had tailed Harry to the warehouse) jumped in to protect her husband. In the scuffle the firearm went off and Harry took a bullet. He was instantly killed.

In the aftermath, Charity battled PTSD, which nearly led her to kill again when she stabbed Mack in a trauma-induced daze.

    Heath Hope dies in Emmerdale

    Emmerdale Christmas deaths: Heath Hope

Emmerdale fans were left in shock after long-term character Heath Hope was killed off last New Year’s Eve.

Heath, his twin sister Cathy and their friend Angelica King were desperate to see in 2024 at a house party in Hotten. So the trio decided to steal nurse Wendy Posner’s car to drive to the venue. But tragedy struck enroute when the vehicle came off the road.

Heath’s dad Bob and Wendy came across the scene of the accident, and found injured Angelica and Cathy in a state of shock. But there was no saving poor Heath, whose lifeless body was slumped in the back seat. He was just 16.

Cathy initially took the blame for causing the crash, but it later transpired Angelica had been behind the wheel. She confessed and was sent to prison for causing death by dangerous driving.

Emmerdale births: Every single baby born in the Dales from Sam Skilbeck to Evan Fletcher

There have been 37 births in Emmerdale since the show started in 1972. The most recent was Evan Fletcher and that was one year ago.

In fact there have been no births in Emmerdale at all in 2024. But will 2025 bring the pitter patter of tiny feet for anyone in the Dales?

Let’s take a look at all the births in Emmerdale on screen and also what happened to the babies.

    1 & 2. Sam and Sally Skilbeck

Samuel William ‘Sam’ Skilbeck was the first baby to be born on Emmerdale. He arrived on April 10 1973, alongside his twin sister, Sally. Their parents were Peggy and Matt Skilbeck and his maternal grandmother was the legendary Annie Sugden. Their young life was blighted by tragedy. Peggy died of a brain hemorrhage when her twins were just three months old, and the twins own lives were cut short when they were killed on a level crossing, aged three.

    3. Matthew Oswell

Four years after the first births in Emmerdale, came the arrival of baby Matthew Oswell. He made his entrance into the world on August 15 1977. During that time, Matthew’s parents Sarah and Ray Owell were lodging at Emmerdale Farm after their cottage had been destroyed in a storm. Sarah went into labour while at the farm, but made it to hospital in time to deliver Matthew.

    4. Samuel Skilbeck

Samuel Benjamin ‘Sam’ Skilbeck was born on December 23 1982 to Matt Skilbeck and his second wife Dolly. He was named after Sam Pearson, the grandfather of Matt’s first wife, Peggy, and in honour of his late half-brother, Samuel who had died five years earlier. Samuel’s parents split when he was seven, and he moved away from the village with his mum in 1991.

Overjoyed Elsa and Nick named their newborn Alice after her great-grandmother.

    7. Victoria Sugden

Victoria Anne Sugden has lived her whole life in Emmerdale village, having been born there on March 31 1994. She was the only daughter of Jack Sugden and his then-fiancée Sarah Connolly (later Sarah Sugden). Victoria made a huge impact from the start – her piercing cries actually woke her grandmother Annie Kempinski from a three month coma. The tot also gave Jack and Sarah a huge scare when she stopped breathing due a hole in her heart, but underwent surgery at two-months-old and went on to make a full recovery.

    8. Joseph Tate

Joseph Mark ‘Joe’ Tate was the first of Frank Tate’s grandchildren to be born. The year after Joseph’s birth saw the very dramatic arrival of another Tate – his uncle, James Francis ‘Jamie’ Tate. James’s mum, Kim Tate had experienced a difficult pregnancy, mainly down to not knowing whether her husband Frank Tate or lover Dave Glover was her baby’s father. James was delivered via an emergency cesarean section at 9.35pm on September 24 1996, weighing at 8lb 4oz. Having been deprived of oxygen at birth, James was placed on a ventilator and his father Frank Tate, arranged for him to be christened. However, he went to make a full recovery and a DNA test later confirmed Frank was his father.

11 Emmerdale golden oldies – powerhouse matriarchs, randy old fellas and a gambling addict gran

Emmerdale have always been brilliant at shining a light on their more mature stars, better known as the golden oldies.

They may not offer the sex appeal and excitement of their younger generations, but they’ve got a wealth of life experience. There’s not much these ladies and gents haven’t seen or done. Just look at Eric Pollard – he’s now the soap’s longest serving character, and there’s never been a dull moment when he’s on screen.

To celebrate their greatness, let’s take a look at 11 of Emmerdale’s greatest OAP icons, both past and present…

    Emmerdale golden oldies: Annie Sugden

Annie was the OG matriarch of Emmerdale and one of the soap’s most beloved icons. Played by the late Sheila Mercier, Annie remains the longest-serving female character in Emmerdale’s 52 year history.

Introduced in the very first episode of Emmerdale, Annie was the widow of farmer Jacob Sugden. Not much was known about Jacob, but viewers learnt he’d been an alcoholic and neglectful husband, often leaving Annie to look after their farm and children.

Annie was a mum of three to sons Jack and Joe, and daughter Peggy. She doted on her brood, but tragically, all of her children died before she did.

There were other traumas in Annie’s life. She had to contend with constant financial woes, and she also battled an addiction to painkillers. In 1993, she was seriously injured when a plane hit the village, which was known back then as Beckindale. Annie was left in a coma for three months, and woke up to discover her second husband, Leonard Kempinski had been killed in the tragedy.

After an incredible 32 years, Annie decided to swap the Yorkshire Dales for a new life in sunny Spain. A year after her sad departure it was revealed Annie had married for a third time, to former Woolpack landlord Amos Brearly. More on him later.

Over the next decade and a half fans were treated to the occasional visit from Annie. She was last seen on screen in February 2009 when she returned to lay her eldest, Jack to rest.

Annie lived out the rest of her years in Spain, and passed away in August 2020 at the ripe old age of 100.

    Seth Armstrong in Emmerdale
Seth was one of Emmerdale’s all time greats (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)

    Seth Armstrong

Fans always had a soft spot for Seth. The character, whose real name was Archibald Seth, was played by actor Stan Richards from 1978 to 2004.

A loveable rogue, Seth was always in and out of trouble. His hobby was poaching, and after years of illegally shooting birds on Home Farm land he was made gamekeeper there in 1980. In later years he formed an unlikely friendship with lady of the manor, Kim Tate.

Seth was widowed in 1993 when his wife Meg passed away, and months later his house was destroyed in the plane crash. But his fortunes changed in 1994 when Seth was reunited with his teenage sweetheart, Betty. The couple fell back in love, but Seth’s appetite for mischief often got him in trouble with his other half.

Who remembers when the cheeky chap set up a webcam, which broadcast Betty’s daily movements to everyone on the net, just to get a free breakfast? Betty chucked Seth when she found out what he’d done, but he found a way to win her back.

Seth said farewell to the village in 2003 when he moved away to Australia. He passed away off-screen, following Stan Richards death from emphysema in February 2005.

Carrying out his final wishes, Seth’s body was illegally buried in the woods, with only his nearest and dearest knowing the truth.

Betty was a force of nature (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)

    Betty Eagleton

Busybody Betty always knew what everyone in the village was up to. She loved nothing better than a good old gossip over a glass of her favourite tipple, sherry. But despite her nosiness, Betty was an adored member of the community and a friend to all.

She arrived back in 1994, and embarked on a romance with her former love Seth. Both had been widowed and made plans of their own to marry, but decided at the last minute they were too old to be exchanging vows.

Betty definitely wore the trousers in their relationship. She was the first to call Seth out if he’d been up to no good (which was often!). There were plenty of comedy moments between the couple, which actress Paula Tilbrok played to perfection. Seth might have been useless at times, but we’ll always remember how he stepped in to protect Betty when her nasty ex Reggie Wilkie tried to cause trouble.

His death in 2005 left Betty heartbroken, but she found the courage to carry on.

In 2015, Paula Tilbrook announced she was retiring after 21 years of playing Betty. The actress described her decision to leave Emmerdale as ‘both the saddest and happiest day of my life’. The character moved to Australia with her new beau, Reuben Archibald, who hilariously was a dead ringer for her beloved Seth.

Betty’s last on-screen appearance was on Christmas Day 2015. Four years later, Paula passed away aged 89.

    Emmerdale golden oldies: Amos Brearly

Emmerdale original Amos Brearly was the pipe-smoking landlord of The Woolpack and famed for his bushy sideburns.

His name had been above the village boozer since 1948, which means he’d already been landlord for 24 years when viewers were first introduced to him. Amos was a terrible gossip – you couldn’t tell him a secret unless you wanted half of the village to know. He could also be rather moody and the sight of blood would make him faint.

His greatest friend was Henry Wilks, who joined forces with him in 1973 to run the Woolie together. Although they frequently clashed, Amos and Henry created an iconic partnership which they managed to keep going for 19 years.

Amos had his brushes with death – he was the victim of an armed robbery and survived a stroke, which ended his days as landlord.

Amos only had eyes for one woman in Emmerdale – Annie Sugden. He proposed to her in 1972, but she turned him down. They remained friends, and when Amos asked Annie to marry him again in 1995, she accepted.

He left Emmerdale that year and went to live with Annie in Spain. The couple went on to marry, but what became of Amos, who knows!

    Eric Pollard

There’s only one Eric Pollard. And where would Emmerdale be without him?

A permanent fixture on our screens since 1986, Eric has been entertaining audiences for 38 years. But did you know he was only meant to stay for 12 episodes? Actor Chris Chittell’s portrayal of scheming Pollard was such a hit with viewers it was decided to keep him on full time. And we’re grateful they did.

Eric has certainly lived a colourful life. He’s been engaged in several business (mainly illegal) ventures, made plenty of enemies, and had lots of brides.

To date, there have been five Mrs Pollards. These include his second wife Elizabeth Jefferies, who perished in the plane crash of 1993. Eric committed bigamy by marrying Elizabeth, as he was still wedded to his first missus, Eileen.

Wifey number three was Filipino student Dee de la Cruz, then Eric said I do with social climber Gloria Weaver. The true love of Eric’s life was his fifth wife, the indomitable Valerie ‘Val’ Pollard, who left the biggest void in his life when she died in 2015.

Although initially characterised as a ruthless villain, Eric has mellowed over the years and shown us moments of tremendous vulnerability. Never more so than with his battle against Parkinson’s disease.

Eric was diagnosed with the incurable condition in 2023, and has struggled to accept his ailing health. But there’s still life in the old boy yet! However not another wedding after Brenda recently ended their relationship following his betrayal investing all their cash.

    Edna Birch

Edna had the sharpest tongue in the village, but underneath her stern exterior was a wise mind and kind heart. She was a friend to many, particularly Betty Eagleton, Pearl Ladderbanks and Sandy Thomas.

She was introduced to audiences in 2000, although Edna had already lived in Emmerdale for years. Characterised as a proud and strong-willed lady, Edna could be incredibly judgey and rarely held back in voicing her opinions.

She had two great loves in her life. First up was the church. As a devout Christian and committed member of the St Mary’s congregation, Edna’s faith was central to all she did. And of course, there were her adorable canine companions, Batley and Tootsie.

Edna’s backstory was explored in 2014 with the introduction of Lawrence White. It was revealed Lawrence had had a gay love affair with Edna’s husband Harold. Edna had reported Lawrence to the police and he was jailed, with Edna believing he died behind bars.

Tragically Edna’s time in Emmerdale was cut short when actress Shirley Stelfox (who also played the original Rose in Keeping Up Appearances) passed away in December 2015 following a short battle with cancer. The character was killed off the following year.

    Emmerdale golden oldies: Sandy Thomas

Former Navy officer Sandy brought his own brand of eccentricity to village life and certainly livened things up at the vicarage.

The dad of local reverend Ashley Thomas, Sandy and his son had a complicated past. They had fallen out years previously after Sandy helped his wife Dorothy end her life, something which went against Ashley’s Christian beliefs.

Sandy gave us so many LOL moments, even if his family found his innuendo-laden jokes rather embarrassing.

But it was no laughing matter when Sandy found himself on the receiving end of Ashley’s temper. Ashley was in a dark place after his marriage split from Laurel and took his hurt out on Sandy. For months, viewers watched on in horror and as the defenseless pensioner was subjected to terrible physical and mental abuse. Ashley was eventually brought to justice and Sandy forgave him for what he’d done.

Sandy continued to live at Mulberry cottage after Ashley’s death in 2017. He bid us all farewell the following year, opting to join his old mate Betty down under. In 2020, news reached the village that Sandy had died peacefully in his sleep.

    Pearl Ladderbanks

Flirty, feisty and forthright – that was our Pearl. She provided the perfect sparring partner for uptight Edna. Pearl also brought a touch of glamour to the Dales with her striking outfits and immaculate hair and make up.

She came to the Dales in 2003 and immediately caught the eye of fellow OAP Len Reynolds. Pearl and Len became a couple and went on to marry.  However, their relationship was put to the test when Pearl’s rapist son Frank came to stay in the village. The couple were ostracised by the locals for housing an abuser, and even considered moving away.

Wherever Pearl went trouble often followed. She got conned into investing in a get-rich-quick scheme and got into debt after borrowing money from Eric Pollard. Pearl briefly fled the village, but was found in Leeds working under the alias of Irene.

After Len’s death, Pearl faced problems at work when Vanessa Woodfield tried to push her out of the vets, saying she too old to be their receptionist. But it was Paddy Kirk who gave Pearl her marching orders after discovering she’d been stealing money from the surgery to fund her gambling addiction. Pearl foolishly tried to fake having Alzheimer’s to excuse her behaviour, but was found out.

In 2019, actress Meg Johnson took an extended break, with Pearl’s absence explained that she’d gone on a caravan holiday. The character was last seen on screen in March 2020, and in 2024 news reached the village that Pearl had passed away.

    Rishi Sharma

We always felt a little sorry for lovely Rishi, particularly with a son as nasty and manipulative as Jai.

Big-hearted Rishi was forever trying to clean up whatever mess Jai had made – whether it was within his personal life or at work. And daughter Priya gave the poor man many sleepless nights too.

In 2018, Rishi finally found some happiness of his own when he began dating local doctor Manpreet Sharma. Both Jai and Priya suspected Manpreet was taking their father for a ride and tried to warn him off her. But Rishi was besotted. The pair went on to marry in Las Vegas in 2019.

When the Sharma clan were hit by a financial crisis, Rishi ended up making a deal with the devil – also known as Kim Tate. A fire broke out at the family’s factory and Rishi was forced to give up his share in the business. More bad times followed when Manpreet called time on the marriage and told Rishi she no longer loved him.

Then in 2023 came the biggest shock of all when Rishi admitted to Jai he wasn’t his biological dad. It turned out Rishi’s younger brother Amit was actually the real father.

Weeks later, on the day of Jai’s wedding to Laurel Thomas, Rishi was discovered dead at the bottom of the stairs of Holdgate. It was later revealed Rishi had fallen to his death while rowing with Amit.

    Emmerdale golden oldies: Rodney Blackstock

In his life before Emmerdale, Rodney worked on a fairground, and even tried his hand at being an author. The biggest vices in his life were women and wine. Not much has changed then.

Rodney was introduced in 2000 as the estranged father of Bernice. He’d walked out on his daughter when she was just five years old and left Diane to raise her alone. It later transpired he’d had an affair with Diane’s sister Val Lambert, the product of which was a son, Paul. He went on to have Nicola with his second wife Maureen.

Rodney has always had an eye for the ladies. This randy old goat has so many notches on his bedpost we’re surprised there’s one left. Rodders’ conquests include Louise Appleton, Steph Stokes and Kelly Windsor. He even tried his hand at being a male escort.

His long-standing bromance with Eric Pollard has also delighted fans over the years.

    Bear Wolf

His name might sound intimidating, but lovely Bear is a total softie.

The former wrestler was introduced into the soap as Paddy Kirk’s long-lost father. Back in the 1960s, Bear had an affair with Barbara Kirk, which resulted in her giving birth to a son, Paddy. Barbara raised Paddy to believe her husband was his real father.

The truth was revealed in January 2019 when Paddy found a letter that Bear had written his mum around the time she fell pregnant. A DNA test confirmed Bear was Paddy’s father, and the pair had an emotional reunion in Belfast.

Shortly after Bear arrived in Emmerdale and decided to stay there to make a fresh start with his son. He originally moved into The Woolpack, but now lives in Tenant House.

Over the past five years Bear has proved to be a rock for Paddy. He supported him through his split from Chas, helped him overcome a battle against depression, and has been a lovely grandad to little Eve. He was also an amazing friend to Faith Dingle during the last weeks of his life. All Bear needs now is the love of a good woman.

10 of the steamiest love triangles in Emmerdale – jealousy, revenge and desire

Hands up who enjoys a good old Emmerdale love triangle? Three might be a crowd, but there’s no denying they’re completely addictive to watch. And the village has seen plenty of them over the years – from brothers fighting over the same lass, to a one-night stand that caused death and destruction.

Now after Cain Dingle slept with his sister-in-law Ruby Fox-Miligan, he is struggling with his guilt. Their shocking liaison occurred while Cain’s wife Moira was undergoing life-saving brain surgery and has left fans disgusted by their betrayal.

While we all pick up our jaws up on the floor over this moment of complete madness, let’s take a look at 10 of the most tangled love triangles in Emmerdale history…

Emmerdale love triangles: Robert Sugden, Katie Addyman and Andy Sugden

Katie Addyman found herself torn between two brothers when she began an affair with Robert while she was engaged to Andy.

Robert’s initial motive for seducing Katie was revenge. He was jealous of Andy, who’d been adopted into the Sugden family, and never forgave him for starting the fire that claimed their mum Sarah’s life.

But as the fling developed, so did Robert’s feelings for Katie. They enjoyed secret romps all over the family farm, while oblivious Andy was planning his future with Katie. The dirty duo even slept together the night before Andy and Katie’s wedding. After marrying Andy, Katie tried her best to resist Robert’s charms, but it was no use. She made plans to run away with her lover, but then Andy found out what was going on and all hell broke loose.

Andy tried to shoot Robert, but their dad Jack was caught in the crossfire. Katie shacked up with Rob for a while, and they even got engaged. But their love story came to an acrimonious end when Robert strayed with Sadie King.

Years later, the rivalry between the Sugden siblings ramped up again when Robert tried to sabotage Katie and Andy’s second wedding. Weeks later, Robert pushed Katie to her death after she discovered his affair with Aaron Dingle. But more on that later.

Pete Barton, Ross Barton and Debbie Dingle in Emmerdale

Ross Barton, Debbie Dingle and Pete Barton

Debbie Dingle was another Emmerdale lass who didn’t mind keeping it in the family.

The mechanic was engaged to marry stable, dependable Pete Barton, but it was his younger brother Ross that got Debbie’s engine going. She even described him as her ‘best sex ever’. Blimey!

Ross and Debbie couldn’t get enough of one another and hatched a plan to run away. But then Cain put a spanner in the works when he revealed Ross had fathered a son with Debbie’s mum, Charity.

Deciding Pete was probably a better option, Debbie went ahead with the wedding. But as the couple took to the floor for their first dance, a recording of Debbie and Ross discussing their affair was played to all the guests. Understandably Pete did not react well to the news his wife had been screwing his brother.

He attacked Ross, and dumped his body in the woods, believing he was dead. But unbeknownst to Pete, and the viewers, Ross was still alive. He returned months later and tried to have Pete murdered. The idea of being with someone so dangerous no longer appealed to Debbie. Fearing for her kids’ safety, she put an end to their affair there and then.

Chas Dingle, Cameron Murray and Debbie Dingle

Once a cheater, always a cheater. That was Cameron Murray.

Having left his wife and kids to start a new life in Emmerdale with Debbie Dingle, Cameron’s head was turned by her Auntie Chas. Their high risk affair set in motion a chain of events that would lead to death and destruction.

During a temporary split from Cameron, Chas had a short-lived marriage to dependable Dan Spencer. While Cameron tried to stay faithful to Deb (who was pregnant with Andy Sugden’s son – a saviour sibling for sick Sarah). Are you keeping up?

But then Chas’s ex Carl King found out about the affair, and Cameron had to kill him. Debbie realised Cameron had been sleeping with Chas and dumped him – but they ended up in bed together. This time behind Chas’s back.

Cameron claimed a further two victims (Gennie Walker and Alex Moss) in order to protect his murderous secret. When Debbie and Chas discovered the truth they worked together to bring their twisted lover to justice. Cameron was arrested and sent to prison. He escaped a month later and returned to the village, where he took the locals hostage in a terrifying siege.

Cam’s reign of terror finally came to end when he accidentally electrocuted himself. While Debbie and Chas were left wishing they’d never dropped their knickers for him.

Cain Dingle, Moira Dingle and Nate Robinson

Emmerdale love triangles: Moira Dingle, Nate Robinson and Cain Dingle

Back in 2019, Moira and Nate sent shockwaves through the village with their passionate affair.

Farmhand Nate had already bedded Amy Wyatt and flirted with other local ladies when he set his sights on married Moira. Fans were in uproar over their fling, but there was a very specific reason Nate had seduced Cain’s missus.

Viewers found out that Cain’s love rival was in fact his son, who he never knew existed. But Nate had been brought up by his mum to believe Cain had abandoned him as a baby and wanted revenge!

All hell broke loose when Cain was informed by Pete Barton that his wife was sleeping with Nate. On the warpath, Cain tracked the cheating duo down to a hotel then lured them onto a boat, with murder in mind.

As punches were thrown, Nate revealed his true identity, and Moira fell into the water, nearly drowning in a tangle of weeds. Nate very nearly was killed too, but Cain decided to save him at the last minute.

In the aftermath, Cain and Moira split for a while, but eventually found their way back to one another. And Cain even found it in his heart to forgive Nate for everything he’d done.

Dave Glover, Kim Tate and Frank Tate

This love triangle was more of a quadrangle as it involved Dave’s other half Kathy too.

Kim and Dave’s affair began back in 1994. He was engaged to marry Kathy, but she’d imposed a ban on sex before marriage. Frustrated by the lack of action he was getting, Dave found himself seduced by Kim. She was looking for a distraction from her ailing marriage to Frank, and became hooked on the handsome farmhand. Kim and Dave fell in love, but their secret was outed after Frank paid a private investigator to follow them.

Weeks after being caught in the act, Kim found out she was pregnant. She didn’t know who the father was, but hoped it was Dave’s. In 1996, Kim gave birth to son James, and was gutted when a DNA test confirmed the tot was, in fact, a Tate.

Meanwhile, Dave went on to marry Kathy, but his heart was still with Kim. The lovers decided to run away from the village together, but never made it that far when Dave was killed in a fire at Home Farm.

Chrissie White, Robert Sugden and Aaron Dingle in Emmerdale

Emmerdale love triangles: Aaron Dingle, Robert Sugden and Chrissie White

All Robron fans wanted was for their boys to be together, but there was a Chrissie-shaped obstacle in the way.

Robert was engaged to the Home Farm heiress when he started his affair with Aaron. While it was clear who he really loved, Robert was addicted to the lavish lifestyle he had with Chrissie. For months, he deceived his other half by hooking up with Aaron all around the village. Chrissie almost caught them in a hotel together, but Robert talked his way out of it.

The day of Robert and Chrissie’s wedding, Aaron summoned him to a barn, where he confessed his love. They were caught in the act by Katie Sugden, who threatened to expose their betrayal, but Robert accidentally killed her.

While Robert went on to marry Chrissie as if nothing had ever happened, the stress of covering up Katie’s death caused Aaron to have a breakdown. Unable to carry on living a lie, Aaron finally snapped and told Chrissie everything!

Robert found himself kicked out of Home Farm, and Chrissie swiftly divorced him. But despite everything, Aaron still loved Robert. They eventually reunited, going on to marry. And even though Robron are currently not together, there’s a sense it isn’t the end of their story.

Charity Dingle, Chris Tate and Zoe Tate in Emmerdale

Zoe Tate, Charity Dingle and Chris Tate

Zoe and Charity’s lesbian fling caused quite the stir back in 2001.

At the time, Charity was engaged to Home Farm millionaire Chris Tate, but his sister Zoe did not approve of her brother’s choice of bride. She made numerous attempts to split the couple up, and then it transpired Zoe actually wanted Charity for herself.

The pair embarked on a lusty affair behind Chris’s back. But then Zoe ruined it by going all bunny boiler on Charity. When Charity decided to end things, Zoe made a recording of her admitting to cheating and used it to blackmail her.

Charity refused to be controlled, so decided to tell Chris on her own terms. Bizarrely, given the double betrayal, he forgave Charity and went ahead with their wedding. And as for Zoe, she was left off the guest list.

Emmerdale's Chloe, Charity and Mack are in a car

Emmerdale love triangles: Chloe Harris, Mackenzie Boyd and Charity Dingle

These three created one of the messiest love triangles Emmerdale has ever known.

Mack ended up in bed with teen Chloe following an argument with wife Charity. He hoped no one would ever find out about their one-night stand, but then Chloe revealed she was pregnant.

Baby Reuben was born and Charity dumped Mack when she realised he was the father. Mack tried to make it work with Chloe, but quickly realised she wasn’t the one he wanted to be with. So what did he do? He started sleeping with Charity again, that’s what!

His betrayal broke Chloe’s heart and left her in a vulnerable state. Days later, Chloe, Mack and Charity were involved in a terrifying car accident after a van ploughed into their vehicle, leaving it teetering on a clifftop edge. Mack managed to escape the wreckage and had to decide whether to save Charity or Chloe. He chose Charity, and Chloe fell with the car. She was in a coma for weeks, but miraculously survived.

Events reached a terrifying climax after Chloe’s gangster dad Damon kidnapped Mack. He was determined to make him pay for everything he’d put his daughter through. Charity came to Mack’s rescue and ended up shooting Damon dead.

Tracy Robinson, Caleb Miligan and Nate Robinson

Last Christmas, Tracy was in over her head, caught up in a love triangle with husband Nate and his uncle, Caleb Miligan. Their hot and heavy fling frankly made little sense. Fans couldn’t get why Tracy would cheat on Nate given the fact they seemed so happy.

But she fell under Caleb’s spell and couldn’t get enough of the sexy businessman. After several very close calls, including nearly getting rumbled by Nate, it was Caleb’s missus Ruby who worked out what was going on. She took her revenge by outing their affair during Belle and Tom King’s wedding reception.

It was curtains for Robinsons’ marriage, and Tracy realised how stupid she’d been when Caleb went straight back to Ruby.

    Emmerdale jilted characters: Luke McAllister

We’re rewinding the clock back to 1995, a time when Tina Dingle had a different face and was engaged to wed local heartthrob Luke McAllister.

Their romance caused uproar in the village, particularly amongst the Dingles, who blamed Luke for the death of Zak’s son Ben. The lad had collapsed and died after taking a punch from Luke, although it later transpired he had a heart defect.

Nevertheless, the Dingle clan never forgave Luke for their loss and drove his family out of the village. Luke stayed put and ended up falling for Tina, who he met at a dance. Naturally, her loved ones were livid.

After a whirlwind romance, Tina announced she was pregnant with Luke’s baby. A shotgun wedding was hastily arranged, but Tina wasn’t really in love with Luke. She waited until they were standing at the altar to tell her fiancé there was no baby, she just wanted revenge on him for what he did to Ben.

Luke did not take the news well. Weeks later he attempted to kill Tina in a speeding van, but she jumped out just in time. Luke wasn’t so lucky. He ploughed the vehicle into a fence and was killed on impact.

    Albert Dingle

It’s hard to imagine Lisa with anyone other than her beloved Zak, but she nearly became another man’s Mrs Dingle.

Lisa and Zak hit it off straightaway after meeting in 1996, but Zak’s jailbird brother Albert also had his eye on her. When Zak failed to prove his feelings, Lisa agreed to marry Albert, even though she didn’t really love him.

Their wedding day ended up being one to remember. First Lisa’s horrible ex-husband Barry Clegg crashed the nuptials and had to be forcibly removed from the church. Then Zak came to his senses and declared his love for Lisa in front of the whole congregation.

Poor Albert was heartbroken and ended up fleeing the village after the police arrived to question him over an armed robbery.

Zak finally got his girl, and just four months later Lisa became his wife.

Twisted teacher Graham Clark managed to get into Kathy’s head. The pair grew close and Kathy started to wonder whether she was marrying the right man. However, she put her doubts aside and decided to go ahead.

Dressed to impress in a gorgeous gold wedding gown, Kathy made her way up the aisle. But just as they were about to exchange vows, Biff called the wedding off, declaring he was unable to trust her and Graham.

Kathy was devastated and begged Biff to carry on. But his mind was made up. Biff rode out of the village on his motorbike shortly afterwards and hasn’t been seen since.

During her hen party, Nicola was caught necking vodka by Bernice. She confessed she wasn’t expecting and Bernice (who was actually pregnant at the time) insisted she had to tell Carlos before the ceremony. Nicola did the right thing, but was horrified when Carlos revealed the truth about him and Bernice and admitted he could be the father of her baby.

Appalled, Nicola stormed the church and declared the wedding was off due to Carlos cheating, before informing Ashley of his wife’s betrayal. Savage!

Tom King jilts Charity DIngle in Emmerdale

    Charity Dingle

It’s not often we feel sorry for Charity Dingle, but she didn’t deserve to be jilted by Tom King. Particularly as it was all super bitch Sadie’s fault.

Sadie was Jimmy King’s first wife, and Tom’s daughter-in-law. She despised Charity and did not take kindly to the idea of a former prostitute  threatening her position at Home Farm.

So Sadie started plotting to sabotage the couple’s big day. She recruited Cain to her dastardly mission, and paid him to make a move on Charity and capture the moment on camera. Although Charity rejected Cain’s advances, the incriminating pictures suggested otherwise.

Sadie showed the snaps to Tom on his wedding day. And surprise, surprise, he called off the nuptials, leaving Charity feeling totally distraught. And as for Sadie, she got her comeuppance. When Tom finally wised up to her scheming he cut her off without a penny.

Jimmy King jilts Kelly WIndsor in Emmerdale

    Kelly Windsor

Jimmy King sure knows how to pick ’em. After being made a fool of by first wife Sadie, he fell for another manipulative minx – Kelly Windsor.

In the lead up to their wedding Kelly discovered she’d fallen pregnant. The timing couldn’t have been worse. Kelly had just landed a lucrative modelling contract and feared a baby would scupper her career. Taking her agent’s advice, Kelly underwent an abortion behind poor Jimmy’s back.

But Kelly’s lies caught up with her on her wedding day. Eli Dingle paid Jimmy a visit and told him about the abortion. And if that wasn’t bad enough Eli also revealed he’d shared a cheeky snog with Kelly.

Disgusted by her double betrayal, Jimmy told Kelly she could forget becoming Mrs King!

    Emmerdale jilted characters: Michael Conway

Handsome Michael Conway was introduced to Emmerdale in 2009 as a love interest for Debbie Dingle.

The pair began a romance, but Debbie was devastated to learn Michael had failed to mention he had a pregnant fiancée. He claimed he’d called the wedding off, but Debbie’s dad Cain smelt a rat. He and Debbie found out where the nuptials were taking place and crashed the ceremony. But to their horror they discovered Michael’s bride-to-be was none other than Charity!

Cain outed Debbie and Michael’s affair and the fact that Debbie was her daughter. But despite the shocking revelations, Charity and Michael agreed to carry on with the wedding. That was until Debbie informed Michael that Charity had tricked him into proposing by pretending she was pregnant.

Charity was forced to admit there was no baby, and Michael called the whole thing off.

    Cain Dingle

Once upon a time Cain and Charity were on the verge of becoming husband and wife. But the wedding never happened.

After a tumultuous on/off affair that had begun when they were underage teens, Cain proposed to Charity on Christmas Day 2009. He got down on bended knee and presented her with a plastic engagement ring.

Swept up in the excitement, Cain organised a surprise wedding with a little help from his sister, Chas.

On March 11, 2010, Charity was taken to the registry office, where Cain was waiting to make an honest woman of her. But although she was touched by the romantic gesture, Charity had to let her fiancé down gently. She explained she wasn’t quite ready to settle down, so they returned home.

Unsurprisingly, the couple split shortly afterwards. Charity went on to wed husband number two Jai Sharma, while Cain married Moira.

    Emmerdale jilted characters: Carl King

Fans across the country cheered out loud for Chas the day she dumped love rat Carl King at the altar.

It was Christmas Day 2010 and the locals were invited to Chas and Carl’s festive nuptials. But no one – apart from Chas and her cousin Charity – knew what was about to happen.

Chas had discovered Carl had been sleeping with Woolpack barmaid Eve Jenson. In revenge, she told Carl she was pregnant with his baby and asked him to marry her. He agreed, completely unaware of the trap he’d fallen into.

With her stage set, Chas took great pleasure in outing Carl and Eve’s affair to everyone. And as a final sucker punch, she informed Carl there was no baby after all.

Nicky Miligan jilts Gabby Thomas in Emmerdale

    Gabby Thomas

Gabby’s jilting may have happened in the more private setting of Home Farm, but that didn’t make it any less humiliating.

It should have been the happiest day of Gabby’s life as she prepared to marry nanny Nicky Fox. But she discovered their whole romance was based on a big fat lie.

Nicky Fox was actually Nicky Miligan, Caleb’s son and the grandson of the late Frank Tate. He’d been faking his feelings for Gabby as part of a scheme concocted by Caleb to steal Kim Tate’s millions.

On the morning of their intended nuptials, Nicky couldn’t carry on the cruel deception. He told Gabby he couldn’t marry her because he was actually a gay man. She was devastated, but that was nothing compared to Caleb’s fury that his scam had failed.

11 best Charity Dingle moments in Emmerdale – lusty love affairs, secret kids, murderous husbands and becoming a killer!

What would Emmerdale be without Charity Dingle? The iconic Woolpack landlady is an irrepressible force of nature who’s been part of our lives for nearly 25 years.

Best known for her penchant for illegal scams, wealthy men and her tumultuous on/off romance with cousin Cain, Charity’s one of the strongest characters in the village. Played to perfection by the amazing Emma Atkins, Charity has evolved from a scheming money-hungry minx to a slightly more responsible mum and wife, determined to do anything to protect her brood.

In a life that’s had so many incredible moments, it’s almost impossible to narrow them down. But here are 11 of Charity’s best bits…

Emmerdale Charity Dingle’s best moments: Her entanglement with the Tates

Charity burst onto our screens on March 30, 2000. She came to the village for the funeral of her cousin, Butch, and from the word go was a force to be reckoned with.

Feisty and fearless, Charity oozed sex appeal and caught the eye of Home Farm owner Chris Tate. The millionaire was on the lookout for his next bride, but his sister Zoe Tate did not approve of Chris’s choice.

Zoe made out she had an issue with the fact Charity used to be a prostitute. But that wasn’t the problem. The truth of it was that Zoe harboured feelings for her future sister-in-law. Wily Charity soon figured this out for herself. She made a move on Zoe and the pair embarked on a lust-fueled lesbian affair.

Charity eventually came clean to Chris after Zoe turned all bunny boiler. And to her surprise he forgave the betrayal and went ahead with their wedding.

    Reuniting with daughter Debbie

As Charity’s backstory began to be explored it was revealed she’d had a baby at 13, the result of a brief fling with her second cousin, Cain. Charity’s daughter, Debbie Dingle had been given up for adoption to a lady called Pat Jones. But fate brought them back together.

When Pat fell ill (and later died), Debbie was placed in the foster care of Paddy and Emily Kirk – who just so happened to live in the same village as her birth mum. What are they chances, eh?

After realising who Debbie was, Charity kept the discovery to herself. But when Debbie spilled the beans to Cain it was a secret no more. After a tricky start, Charity made up for lost time and bonded with the baby she’d been forced to give up.

    Love affair with Cain

How could we talk about Charity’s best moments with including Cain? He’s her second cousin, former fiancé, baby daddy, and, in the opinion of many Emmerdale fans, true soulmate. Charity and Cain’s on/off romance has spanned two decades and they are still one of soap’s most shipped pairings.

Charity’s relationship with Cain goes way, way back. Aged 13 and 14 respectively, they had a fling, which resulted in pregnancy.

They were brought back together as adults, got engaged, and nearly made it down the altar. But Charity had last-minute doubts and decided she’d rather be Cain’s girlfriend than his wife.

With so many amazing moments, it’s hard to choose one that stands out from the rest. But we are big fans of Charity and Cain’s troublemaking schemes – whether it’s stealing flash motors or swindling folk out of money.

Emmerdale: Charity Dingle’s best moments – her prison births

Charity’s a woman who knows about giving birth in prison – she’s done it twice!

Her first stint behind bars was thanks to Chris Tate. He wanted revenge over Charity’s affair with Cain and the perfect opportunity presented itself when Chris discovered he was dying of a brain tumour. After plotting to take his own life, Chris lured Charity to Home Farm and made it look as if she’d deliberately poisoned him.

Charity was sent down while pregnant with Chris’s baby, and delivered son Noah in March 2004.

Fast forward 11 years and Charity was jailed for a second time after being found guilty of perverting the course of justice. Six months later, Debbie visited her mum on the inside and was shocked when Charity suddenly went into labour. She gave birth to little Moses, whose father later turned out to be village bad boy Ross Barton.

And sparks have been flying again between Charity and Ross after they shared a shock kiss behind her husband Mack’s back. Are they headed for another steamy affair?

Sadie King sabotages Charity Dingle and Tom King's wedding in Emmerdale

    Bitter rivalry with Sadie King

Once upon a time, Charity was engaged to marry multimillionaire Tom King (the late grandfather of Belle’s evil ex). Tom was decades older than Charity but worshipped the ground she walked on. And for someone who’d grown up with nothing, the idea of a life of luxury rather suited Charity. Her future looked bright. But Tom’s scheming daughter-in-law Sadie King had other ideas.

Fearful that her position in the King family tree was under threat, Sadie plotted to stop Charity and Tom’s wedding. In order to do this she paid Cain (who she was bedding) to make a move on Charity and photograph the clinch.

Cain did as he was told, and Sadie showed the incriminating snaps to Tom on his wedding day. Tom jilted Charity at the altar, leaving her feeling humiliated.

Sadie had underestimated who she was dealing with though. Charity got her payback by seducing Sadie’s husband, Jimmy, and recording him confessing to Sadie’s sins!

Charity and Declan's marriage ended in disaster in Emmerdale

Charity and her disastrous marriage to Declan Macey in Emmerdale

After her tumultuous marriage to Jai Sharma ended in divorce, Charity made the near-fatal error of getting involved with Declan Macey. The pair became husband and wife, which meant Charity finally got the chance to be lady of Home Farm.

However, the union was littered with lies and betrayals. Charity fell pregnant but had an abortion behind Declan’s back. She then made out she’d suffered a miscarriage during an altercation with his sister, Megan.

When Declan found out the truth he decided to murder Charity. Events reached an explosive climax in the middle of a lake when Declan tried to shoot Charity with a flare gun. He accidentally shot and killed his nephew Robbie instead. Charity fought back and seemingly killed Declan, but he made a spectacular return.

As payback, he informed the police about all the criminal activities he had and Charity had got up to.

Emmerdale Charity’s best moments: Getting justice against Bails

Charity’s teenage years were traumatic and unstable. After giving birth to Debbie at 13 she ended up living – and working – on the streets as a prostitute. It was there Charity first met corrupt copper, Mark Bails.

He repeatedly abused and raped Charity, holding her hostage and pimping her out to his mates. Charity then fell pregnant. Aged 14, she gave birth to son Ryan, but fled the hospital after believing the baby was dead. She reported Bails for beating her up, which resulted in him losing out on a big work promotion. He never forgave Charity for ‘stalling’ his career.

Years later, their paths crossed again when DI Bails tried to have Charity convicted for insurance fraud. Realising she couldn’t allow him to harm any other vulnerable women, Charity found the courage to report Bails to the police.

She took him all the way to court, where Bails was found guilty on multiple counts and given 30 years in prison.

    Reconnecting with Ryan

Charity’s past returned to surprise her in 2018 when she discovered her son Ryan was actually alive. He had been adopted by Irene Stocks, one of the nurses who worked in the hospital where he was born.

When mum and son finally met it was a difficult reunion. Ryan was heartbroken to learn he’d been the product of rape and that Charity hadn’t even told the Dingles of his existence.

But after a rocky start things smoothed themselves out and Charity welcomed Ryan into her family. She’s incredibly protective of her lad, who has cerebral palsy, and did not approve of Ryan’s relationship with Dawn Taylor.

    Charity and Vanessa in Emmerdale

Charity has always identified as bisexual. Most of her relationships have been with men, but in 2017 she embarked on a romance with local vet Vanessa Woodfield.

Unlike her previous partners, Vanessa was kind and caring and showed Charity real love and support. Finally feeling safe, Charity’s barriers came down and she was able to truly be herself.

She proposed to Vanessa twice, and on the second time her girlfriend said yes. They remained happy for a while, Charity supported Vanessa through her battle against cancer and officially adopted her young son, Johnny. But as trust issues started to creep in, paranoid Charity ended up snogging a stranger she’d met on the side of the road. As you do.

When Vanessa found out about the betrayal, she dumped Charity and left the village. She later returned, but there was no going back for her and Charity as a couple. Which is a shame because we loved them together.

Charity Dingle’s best moments in Emmerdale: Becoming landlady of The Woolpack

Charity’s work ethic (or lack thereof) didn’t make her an obvious choice for landlady of The Woolpack. But eight years on she’s still running the show, so she must be doing something right.

She first came on board as co-owner to help cousin Chas run the village boozer. But Charity’s lazy antics drove Chas to despair and the landladies frequently clashed.

In 2021, the pub went up in flames after shady Al Chapman torched it in an insurance scam. Chas was broke, so The Woolie was put up for auction. And the highest bidders were Charity and her son Ryan.

Second time round, Charity seemed more at ease with being front of house. She recruited Chas to work as manager and Ryan deals with the financial side of the business, which is probably for the best.

    Killing Damon Harris

Last Christmas Charity became a killer after she put a bullet in gangster Damon ‘Harry’ Harris.

Harry was holding Charity’s husband Mackenzie Boyd hostage. Mack had been having an affair with Harry’s daughter, Chloe, and when he chose Charity over her, Harry did not like it!

Charity tailed Harry to the derelict warehouse where he was keeping Mack and realised he was intending to kill him. She jumped in to protect her other half, there was a wrestle for the gun and it suddenly went off, killing Harry.

In the aftermath, Charity was haunted by nightmares over what she’d done to Harry as well as traumatic events from her past. In her confused and agitated state she almost ended up committing another murder after stabbing Mack. Thankfully he lived to tell the tale.
