  • Former Coronation Street star Oliver Farnworth joining Emmerdale as new Sugden

Former Coronation Street star Oliver Farnworth joining Emmerdale as new Sugden

The Sugden family in Emmerdale is getting a new member as John Sugden is set to arrive this summer – and it’s certainly about time too.

Soap fans will recognise John actor Oliver Farnworth because he was once part of one of Coronation Street’s biggest ever storylines.

But now he’s swapped the cobbles for the Dales and will be coming to town soon.

    John Sugden arrives in Emmerdale

Victoria Sugden is, at the present time, the only remaining member of the Sugden family in the village. But that is set to change at last when John arrives.

The character is described as ‘brooding and mysterious’ (aren’t they all?) and he will become ‘deeply entwined with the rich history of the Sugden family’. Sounds, er, fun…

However, John will also have his secrets… (Of course he will). He’s also set for romance, when he catches “the eye of an unsuspecting resident, enriching the drama around his arrival.” Bets on who it will be?

Emmerdale has not confirmed how John and Victoria are related, but it seems certain he’ll be some sort of distant cousin/long-lost brother type. John will arrive on screen in early August.

Emmerdale newcomer Oliver Farnworth on John Sudgen role

Of his new soap role Oliver says: “I am absolutely delighted to be joining the cast of Emmerdale.

“The show has such a rich history, and the Sugden family is integral to that. I’m looking forward to bringing my character to life and working with such a talented and dedicated team.”

Emmerdale’s Producer Laura Shaw also added: “We are thrilled to have an actor with Oliver’s talent and presence join the Emmerdale family.

“The Sugdens have always been central to Emmerdale, and introducing a new member opens up exciting possibilities for future storylines. Mysterious John’s arrival will no doubt create a stir in the village for Victoria and the wider community.”

    Oliver Farnworth in Coronation Street

Best-known to soap fans as Coronation Street’s Andy Carver, Oliver was famously part of the Pat Phelan killing spree plot.

Andy was presumed dead by fans after he disappeared thanks to Phelan. However months later it was discovered he was alive and being held hostage in a basement by killer Pat.

Things took a horrible turn for Andy when Phelan forced him to kill Vinny Ashford, then killed Andy anyway. So all those months in the basement trying to stay alive were pretty much for nothing.

Oliver’s final Corrie episode was in 2017.

Emmerdale star Emma Atkins has revealed that Charity will finally cotton on to the truth that not all is well with Belle and Tom. In fact, she has teased Charity could be Tom’s downfall. Hallelujah!

The actress states it’s all down to her own personal history with evil DI Bails. That’s what makes Charity realise something is up. But as she pressures Belle to reveal all, can she get to the truth and help Belle?

    We really hope so!

Charity’s suspicions of Tom grow – and it’s about time

In upcoming Emmerdale spoilers, Charity is growing very concerned about Belle’s behaviour. She wants Belle to open up and tries to get the other Dingle women – Chas, Lydia and Mandy to help her. But the safe space turns toxic when the questions about her marriage overwhelm Belle and she rushes out.

Tom spins yet another tall tale that Belle is struggling with her mental health – and everyone apart from Charity buys it. But with the Dingles taking Tom’s side, has Charity missed her chance to prove it?

Tom then sets about planning to take Belle to a remote part of Wales – he tells her it’s just a holiday, but actually he is interviewing for a job there. He knows Charity is suspicious and if he wants to keep control he has to get Belle away from her family as soon as possible.

Emmerdale star Emma Atkins says ‘Charity’s on to Tom’

Emma Atkins, who plays Charity, has revealed Charity knows exactly what Tom’s game is – and it’s all thanks to men like DI Bails. Charity was abused and raped by Bails and eventually saw him convicted years after the fact.

Now, as an adult, she knows the signs and knows what to look out for. Her one problem? Getting everyone else to see them too.

Referring to Charity’s past experience with Bails, Emma told Entertainment Daily: “I felt that if anyone was going to recognise those signs of abuse, it probably would be Charity, because she’s lived and breathed it in her past. She starts to notice behavioural changes in Belle.”

Emma then went on to say: “She’s on to him [Tom], and I think that’s going to excite the audience in a way, because everybody’s saying ‘when is he going to get found out?’ So I think they’ll enjoy the fact that someone’s on to him, finally!”

So far, Charity’s efforts have amounted to nothing – but then we know she doesn’t let anything get in her way usually. In Charity versus Tom, we know who our money’s on!

Nate Robinson actor Jurell Carter is leaving Emmerdale, reports claim

It seems Emmerdale is having a hard time keeping young men on their cast list as latest reports have suggested Jurell Carter is leaving the soap as Nate Robinson.

Hot on the heels of Ethan Anderson’s death, and the rumoured departure of both Suni Sharma and Nicky Miligan, Nate’s absence would leave a bloke-shaped hole in the village.

However, after the reveal of his wife Tracy’s affair with his uncle Caleb and the subsequent breakdown of his marriage, there’s really very little keeping Nate in the Dales.

Is it such a sad loss?

‘Explosive exit’ for Jurell Carter from Emmerdale

According to The Sun Jurell – and therefore Nate – will leave the soap later this year and a big exit is planned.

“Nate has been at the centre of some huge storylines and his exit will be no different,” a source told the publication.

“It will be dramatic and explosive and will go down in Emmerdale history. It won’t be one to miss.

“Jurell has loved being on the soap but he’s a young actor and it’s understandable he wants to spread his wings. Five years is a good run but he feels it’s time.”

Emmerdale has been contacted for comment.

Happily ever after did not last long for Nate and Tracy (Credit: ITV)

    Nate’s time on Emmerdale

Nate’s mysterious arrival in the Dales in 2019 immediately ruffled feathers. He kissed Rhona Goskirk and then embarked on an affair with Moira Dingle.

A major twist then confirmed that Nate was in fact the estranged son of Moira’s husband Cain Dingle. He had seduced Moira as an act of revenge for Nate being neglected by his father.

But it then turned out Cain never even knew Nate existed. His mum, Faith had intercepted all correspondence because Cain’s stepdad, Shadrach, was racist.

Nate and his dad finally made up. Wanting to get to know him, Nate settled down in the village. He had a baby with Tracy Metcalfe, supported her through post natal depression – and then cheated on her. They got back together and got married last year, but she quickly embarked on an affair with Caleb.

It seems the drama of village life could have got too much for Nate. But how will he leave?

Could Tracy be involved in his departure? Or is their marriage definitely over for good?
