Daniel Brocklebank is currently playing vicar Billy Mayhew in Coronation Street, but before his stint on the cobbles, he starred as bisexual binman Ivan Jones in Emmerdale.
Ivan is currently causing waves in Classic Emmerdale episodes as hasn’t told anyone he likes men and women. So with half the village lasses chasing after him, it’s quite the surprise when he kisses Paul Lambert.
Who was Ivan Jones and where did he end up? Everything you need to know right here.

Ivan Jones arrives in Emmerdale
On May 5 2005 Ivan arrived in Emmerdale working as a binman at King & Sons. He had just separated from his wife, Jordan and had a fling with Toni Daggert.
After that, he turned his attentions to Jasmine Thomas. There was a considerable age difference but they bonded over a love of literature. Laurel didn’t like the idea of them spending time together and warned Jasmine away. Things soon fizzled out between them.

Relationship with Paul Lambert
Nicola Blackstock made it very clear she was interested in Ivan. She tried to see off Toni who was also sniffing around him again.
However, things took a turn when Ivan kissed Nicola’s brother, Paul. Paul was stunned, but clearly liked Ivan too. They started a sexual relationship, but things were complicated by the fact Ivan insisted they kept it a secret.
Paul couldn’t live a lie for long and decided to end things. But it was clear the spark was still there. During a drunken meal with Nicola and her boyfriend Simon, Paul and Ivan began flirting with each other again.
As they grew closer, Paul accompanied Ivan to collect some things from his ex-wife’s house. But while Ivan was inside, Paul was surrounded by homophobes and his van graffitied with the word ‘ladyboys’. Ivan came back out and declared Paul was his boyfriend. The statement shocked everyone, most of all Ivan, who had never admitted anything like that out loud before.
However, he still insisted they kept their relationship a secret back in the village. Paul reluctantly agreed, but Ivan was then outed in spectacular fashion…
Paul was doing a drag act performing as Thelma Louise at the Woolpack and dropped hints about his secret boyfriend. Furious Ivan felt he was being pressured into coming out and confronted Paul in the toilets. However Paul had not switched off his microphone so the whole pub heard their argument and Ivan was outed. Although he blamed Paul at first, he eventually dealt with it.

Nicola breaks up Paul and Ivan in Emmerdale
Jealous Nicola still liked Ivan and wanted him for himself. And what Nicola wants, she makes sure she gets – no matter what the cost. Simon had by this point moved on and Nicola decided to seduce Ivan. He firmly told her thanks but no thanks, so she decided to punish him for the rejection.
Nicola told Lesley, Rodney and Laurel that she and Ivan had slept together. Ivan insisted that was not the truth, but Nicola managed to manipulate everyone into taking her side and they thought he was lying.
Paul refused to speak to Ivan. However, Nicola soon confided in Laurel she had made it all up and Laurel could not keep such a secret. She announced the truth to everyone in the pub, but Ivan refused to accept their apologies.
Ivan leaves Emmerdale
Rodney thought Paul and Ivan should get back together and although he was annoyed Ivan agreed. He asked Paul for another chance, but Paul didn’t think it was a good idea.
Ivan left for a while then came back after being made haulage manager for Matthew and Sadie King’s rival business. He lived with Simon, but soon the job came to an end and both Simon and Ivan left for a new life in Costa Rica. His last episode aired on August 2 2006.

Daniel Brocklebank in Coronation Street
Actor Daniel Brocklebank who played Ivan is currently playing vicar Billy in Corrie. He joined the soap in 2014 as a new love interest for Sean Tully.
Billy’s life has been turned upside down on more than one occasion. He is a former drug addict and is currently supporting husband Paul Foreman as he battles motor neurone disease.
Back in April 2024 when Ivan arrived in Classic Emmerdale, Daniel told of his joy at being in both shows at once. He shared a picture of him pointing at his character on screen and wrote: “Today Ivan Jones entered Classic Emmerdale… I’m now officially running in two amazing shows on ITV! Here’s me at 24 and 44…”
In fact, Daniel has completed the soap hat trick! He also appeared in EastEnders in 2010 as Roger Green when Billy Mitchell was trying to track down his long-lost son.
Billy’s ex, Julie, told him Roger was their boy. But when Billy confronted him and revealed he was his dad, Roger explained that was not true. It turned out Julie had lied as she couldn’t trace their real son so fantasised her boss Roger was him.
Daniel has also had several parts in Casualty over the years, plus roles in The Bill, Doctors and Waterloo Road. He just needs Hollyoaks to complete the full set now!
Mandy and Paddy may or may not be getting married in Emmerdale after her explosive secret came out just hours before the wedding.
It’s hardly surprising it all went wrong after weeks of listening to Paddy gush about how marrying Mandy was like coming home again and how she was the true love of his life. Laying it on this thick is always a huge neon sign in Soapland that something bad is about to happen.
But it’s not the first time things have soured between ‘true loves’ Mandy and Paddy. In fact their first marriage ended so badly, we’re quite surprised they’re going there again.
Here’s their complete history.
Paddy couldn’t talk Mandy out of marrying Butch (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)
Emmerdale: Mandy and Paddy as star-crossed lovers
In 1995 Mandy Dingle arrived in Emmerdale to live with her uncle Zak after being disowned by her dad, Caleb. Then, two years later in February 1997 Paddy arrived in the village and Mandy fell in love with him.
Things hit a snag when Paddy was overheard ridiculing the Dingle family and Mandy ordered him out of their house. After a stint working in Ireland, Pads came home, apologised and they were back on.
But Paddy’s mother Barbara disapproved of Mandy. Convinced Mandy would only make her son miserable, she paid Mandy to marry her cousin Butch who was hopelessly in love with her. Clearly not so in love with Paddy she couldn’t be bought, Mandy and Butch married in November 1998.
However Mandy was unable to ignore the fact she loved Paddy. They began an affair and she was disowned by the Dingles for cheating on Butch. But before too long, vet Paddy stepped in to deliver surprise baby Belle Dingle for Zak and Lisa and all was forgiven.

Following her divorce from Butch in 1999, Mandy and Paddy got married.
Happiness didn’t last…
Before too long, Mandy started taking trips to Southampton to care for her sick dad. Paddy decided to surprise her there, but found her in a clinch with Caleb’s carer, Neil. Oops.
This was not what Paddy wanted to see his wife doing (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)
Mandy followed him back to Emmerdale and in a special two-hander episode opened up about her affair. She insisted she’d only slept with Neil once and it was because she had felt so worthless in past relationships.
Things got violent and we saw a side to Paddy we’d never seen before when Mandy challenged him. She asked him if he would have done the same if the roles were reversed and the pressure caused him to snap. He pinned her against a wall and screamed in her face that he hated her.
Mandy realised their marriage was over, but soon Paddy begged her to stay. Things escalated and they headed to the bedroom. However despite sleeping together, Paddy couldn’t act like he’d forgiven her.
This was a different side to Paddy (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)
When he then realised she was only with him out of guilt and she actually loved Neil, he ordered Mandy to leave. She was devastated, but didn’t take much persuading. By 2001, she realised she wanted Paddy back. But seeing him with Emily and happy, she decided to leave him be.

A reunion for Mandy and Paddy in Emmerdale
Mandy returned 18 years later in 2019. Paddy was happily married to Chas, Mandy insisted she wasn’t there to come between them and all seemed well. Mandy even got engaged to her ex, Paul Ashdale, but he died on their wedding day and then she found out he had been abusing son Vinny, so the less said about him the better.
By 2022, Chas was exposed for having an affair with Al Chapman and Paddy spiralled into depression following their split. Mandy supported him and they eventually slept together again. It was clear Mandy had big, big feelings for him by this point, but he then went missing and planned to take his own life.
Mandy felt responsible, but Marlon and Chas managed to track him down and get him the help he needed before he was able to do anything. He was on the road to recovery, but nowhere near ready for a relationship with Mandy.
So she pined in private and outwardly played the caring friend. By June 2023, Mandy had got her wish and she and Paddy were back on.
Chas was the one who pulled away, not Paddy (Credit: ITV)
‘Cheating’ with Chas
Things hit a sticky patch when Chas was diagnosed with breast cancer and Paddy stood by her side. Unfortunately he took that support a bit too far when he kissed her.
Paddy came clean immediately and Mandy forgave him, but she then found out Chas ended the kiss not Paddy and heartbroken Mandy refused to have anything more to do with Paddy.
But Paddy managed to win her back with a grand proposal dressed as Prince Charming and they began planning their second wedding.Â

Second time lucky for Mandy and Paddy in Emmerdale?
It became obvious after a while that Mandy was not into planning the wedding. Then it was revealed that was because she is in mountains of debt and with a struggling salon, couldn’t afford to pay it off.
But she refused to tell Paddy, determined a Dingle woman sorts her own problems.
And sort them she has, by becoming a financial dominatrix! She shouts at men online and they pay her money for it. In just days Mandy has paid off her debts and made a killing, but then Bear found out after overhearing her at work – ew!
Although he agreed he would keep quiet, when he realised she was still doing it, he outed her to Paddy who then calls the wedding off.
As Mandy races to save her big day, will these two get wed a second time? Or are all the signs still there this will never be a lasting match?
Keepers Cottage in Emmerdale is one of the village’s most iconic locations. So many Dale icons have lived there from Paddy Kirk to Betty Eagleton and Laurel Thomas.
Now it’s owned by Victoria Sugden, who’s just persuaded new-found half-brother John to move in too.
Which left us scratching our heads a bit because Keepers really isn’t that big! So how many bedrooms does it have and who lives there?

How many bedrooms does Keepers Cottage have in Emmerdale?
We’ve done a bit of digging and we’ve discovered that Keepers is a three-bedroom cottage.
So that left us even more confused!
Laurel was one of Seth and Betty’s lodgers (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)
Where is Keepers Cottage?
The little cottage is next door to the cafe on Main Street in Emmerdale.
The past residents of Keepers Cottage
In 1995, Seth Armstrong and Betty Eagleton moved into Keepers. They lived there until 2003, and because they took in lodgers, lots of Emmerdale characters lived there, too.
Paddy lived there for a while, so did Laurel Thomas, Sandy Thomas, Alan Turner and Terry Woods.
Victoria lived there with Betty and when dad Jack died, she used her inheritance to buy the cottage. When Betty left Emmerdale, Vic’s then-husband Adam moved in.
And when Adam left, Vic was joined by friend Rebecca White.
Betty moved away from Emmerdale and Victoria moved husband Adam into Keepers Cottage (ITV/Shutterstock)
Who lives there now?
After Rebecca moved away, Victoria rented a room to Amy Wyatt and her mum, Kerry.
Amy’s now married to Matty Dingle and they both live at Keepers, and when Kerry returned from her stint on the cruise ship, she also came back to the cottage.
Hmm, it’s already feeling a bit snug! Plus, of course, there’s Victoria’s four-year-old son, Harry.
And now John, too!
So, we’re assuming Victoria has her own room, and she mentioned Harry’s room when she was talking to John, so that makes two. One for newly weds Amy and Matty, and another for Kerry and that’s four… Plus now there’s John to consider.
Has Keepers magically sprung a couple of new bedrooms, Hogwarts-style? Is this another mystery John Sugden’s brought with him?!

Carl King in Emmerdale left quite a mark on the village – and he had quite the reputation with the ladies. But was Chas Dingle his one true love? Or was Carl unable to love anyone except himself?
Played by Tom Lister for eight years, Carl was the third son of four. He was a womaniser, commitment-phobe and a killer – responsible, but never properly punished, for two village deaths. He died himself in 2012 at the hands of serial killer Cameron Murray.
But his legacy lives on – and his temper tantrums certainly live on in son Tom King, currently terrorising estranged wife Belle Dingle. So let’s take a look at Carl and his ladies’ man past.
Colleen was Carl’s first wife (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)
Carl King arrives in Emmerdale
Even from the off, Carl was a womaniser. He arrived in the village as a spy at Tate Haulage, going by the name Carl McKenzie. His first flirt was with Louise Appleton, who he asked on a date.
However, Carl’s wife, Colleen soon arrived and revealed who she was. Louise slapped Carl and Colleen told him not to come home.
After moving into Holdgate with the King family, Carl was doing some roof repairs with local postman Paul Marsden. As Paul was teasing him about his fear of heights, he fell off the roof and died. Carl and his brothers Jimmy and Matthew moved the body so it looked like Paul had fallen off his own roof. Carl never paid for his death.
Carl and Chas Dingle, take 1
It wasn’t long before Carl started bonding with Chas Dingle over both feeling like they were bad parents. He confided in her over Paul’s death and they started dating.
But things were tricky and they took a break – during which he slept with Chloe Atkinson. He got back together with Chas, but things took a dark turn…
Ms Atkinson wanted her man! (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)
Chloe Atkinson’s campaign of terror
Chloe decided to split Chas and Carl up so she could have him all to herself. She started writing poison pen letters and eventually Chas stopped trusting Carl.
So with Chas and Carl over, Chloe moved in for the kill and Carl was only too happy to oblige. However, he soon grew bored of her and tried to end it.
But crazy Chloe wasn’t giving up that easily and told him she was pregnant. She then tried to get pregnant before he found out she was lying. Chas discovered the truth and forced Chloe to ‘fess up. She did and left the village, but not before telling him she could be pregnant as they weren’t using precautions. Is there another spawn of Carl King out there somewhere?

Delilah Dingle
Carl tried to win Chas back, but she wasn’t interested and left to join the army. So he turned his attention to her cousin Delilah Dingle instead. We’d say talk about keeping it in the family, but there are so many Dingles in Emmerdale it’d be hard not to!
They grew closer as he tried to put Chas behind him. He even introduced her to his dad, Tom, but Tom wasn’t impressed he was dating another Dingle. However Del managed to win Tom round and it looked like things were going well.
Not for long! Del soon realised Carl still had feelings for Chas and encouraged him to fight for her. He tracked Chas down and confessed. He then accidentally broke her leg, meaning she was discharged from the army on medical grounds.

Carl King and Chas Dingle, take 2
With Chas back in town, Carl was so overexcited at their reconciliation he proposed. Chas turned him down, so he did a wing walk to conquer his vertigo and she was so impressed she accepted.
They moved into Home Farm together and Chas got a job as Jimmy’s personal assistant.
Things turned sour when Matthew and Sadie King started a rival company. With the family at war, the discovery Chas was passing information on the Kings to Jamie Hope, whose sister Dawn had died thanks to the Kings battle, Tom let rip. He insisted Chas wasn’t good enough for Carl and then bribed her to end things.
But Chas fought back and told Carl everything on Tom’s wedding day to Rosemary Sinclair. Tom was then murdered when he was hit over the head and pushed from his bedroom window. It was later revealed Carl had a confrontation with his father about Chas and hit him when Tom called Chas nasty names. Carl then pushed Tom away and he fell out of the window.
In the midst of all this, Carl started dating DCI Grace Barraclough, who was investigating Tom’s murder! So that soon got complicated and Jimmy whisked his brother out of the country to clear his head. But Carl decided to confess anyway and told Grace everything. She took him to the police station, but was hit by a lorry as she was walking across the road. Carl then got away with murder – and things ended with Grace, pretty badly!
Carl never really loved Lexi (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)
Lexi Nicholls
After Tom’s death, his former lover Carrie Nicholls turned up. She had nursed Tom’s first wife during cancer and she and Tom had had a fling. But it turned out she and Carl had also had a fling!
So when Carrie’s sister, Lexi, came to town he kept it in the family again and became romantically involved with her. Before too long he got bored again, but Lexi blackmailed him to stay with her by revealing she knew he killed Tom. Lexi later proposed to Carl and he accepted.
However, he was still in love with Chas and told her as much on his wedding day. She insisted she had moved on so he married Lexi. He even (reluctantly) agreed to have a baby with her. Lexi lost a baby due to ectopic pregnancy and then wanted to try IVF, but Carl wasn’t keen.
Lexi then took premature baby Angelica from Nicola up to the hospital roof. Carl talked her down, but then admitted he didn’t love her and only married her because she knew his secret. Lexi left to live in Canada, Carl just a painful memory.

Carl King and Chas Dingle in Emmerdale, take 3
It seemed Carl finally got what he wanted after that when he and Chas got back together. They were happy, but once again, Carl started to get bored. Quelle surprise.
He started an affair with Eve Jenson. Chas found out and cooked up a plan to ruin Carl.
She proposed, pretended to be pregnant and then took all his money to pay for the wedding. At the altar, Chas exposed his affair with Eve to the village and humiliated him. It turned out she’d stolen all the money and only paid for a budget wedding. Carl was bitter and twisted and things only got worse…

The end for Carl in Emmerdale
After discovering Chas was having an affair with Cameron Murray, Carl started blackmailing her for his £30K back. The blackmail turned into an obsession with getting Chas back for himself. He asked her to run away with him and she agreed in order to keep him quiet over her affair.
She went on to marry Dan Spencer, but planned to flee Emmerdale after the ceremony. However Carl caught her and stood in front of the camper van to stop her.
He invited her into the bed and he started kissing her and pulling at her dress. Terrified he was going to rape her, Chas managed to get out, but Carl caught her and slammed her to the ground. He confessed he had killed his dad for her and scared Chas grabbed a brick and hit Carl over the head with it.
She fled and spent many months thinking she’d killed him. She even stood trial for it. But in reality, her lover Cameron Murray had finished the job with the same brick.
Mandy Dingle is about to tie the knot with Paddy Kirk, making it wedding number four for the bolshy beautician (though wedding three ended in disaster and no actual marriage), and the second time she’s married Paddy.
So with her – ahem – chequered history of marital bliss, will it be fourth time lucky for Ms Dingle? Or will her dabbling in findom camera work mean it’s not happily ever after?
We thought now would be a good time to take a look back at Mandy Dingle’s disastrous love life.
Here’s our round-up.
Mandy Dingle and her disastrous love life in Emmerdale

Paddy Kirk
When Mandy came to the village for the (very dramatic) wedding of her cousin Tina to Luke McAllister. She immediately hit it off with vet Paddy Kirk and they started a romance. But Paddy’s mum, Barbara, did NOT approve of Ms Dingle.
She tried to break up the couple and knowing the Dingle family had money troubles, Barbara eventually went as far as paying Mandy to marry her cousin Butch Dingle!

Butch had always secretly loved Mandy, so he was well up for their romance, but Mandy couldn’t hide her feelings for Paddy. They started an affair and Butch’s heart was broken. Aww!

Paddy Kirk (again!)
Once she’d broken up with Butch, Mandy rekindled her romance with Paddy and the pair walked down the aisle in a traditional Dingle wedding 25 years ago. They were happy for a while, but Mandy’s dad, Caleb, got sick and Mandy went to look after him.
While she was spending time with Caleb in Plymouth, Mandy began an affair with Caleb’s carer, Neil.
Paddy forgave her, but he eventually realised she’d only come back out of guilt and the pair broke up again. Mandy left the village.
She did return briefly to try to win Paddy back but realised he was happy with Emily Dingle – Butch’s widow – and left again.

Paul Ashdale
In 2019, Mandy came back to Emmerdale with adoptive son Vinny. At first viewers thought Vinny might be Paddy’s son, but it was revealed that he wasn’t even Mandy’s biological son – instead she had brought him up since he was tiny.
Vinny’s dad – and Mandy’s ex – Paul Ashdale arrived in the village and he and Mandy rekindled their romance.
Paul was a gambling addict, but he promised Mandy he’d stopped. However, that was just one of his many lies. He was also abusive and violent and son Vinny was the target.
Meanwhile, Mandy and Paul were planning a wedding. On their big day, Liv Flaherty found out the truth and confronted Paul in the barn where the wedding was taking place.
Paul lashed out at Liv, but just as he did, Jimmy King crashed his lorry into the barn. Paul was trapped in the wreckage and begged Liv to help – she forced him to confess to beating up Paul and then walked away.
When the barn exploded, Jimmy, Liv and Paul were injured. Paul died in hospital. Mandy was heartbroken – and even more devastated when she found out the truth about Paul.
Mandy Dingle and Jimmy King in Emmerdale
After Jimmy crashed into the barn, his guilt was overwhelming and he turned to Mandy for support. She was there for him and they began to connect emotionally.
As Jimmy faced court over the accident, convinced he was going to prison, Mandy read out out statement to the judge supporting him. Jimmy was so grateful, he kissed Mandy.
Things didn’t go any further and Jimmy went back to Nicola with his tail between his legs. And although she gave him a hard time, she eventually forgave him.

Paddy Kirk (again, again!)
When Mandy first returned, Paddy was happily married to Chas Dingle. When they split due to Chas having an affair with Al Chapman, Paddy struggled with his mental health. Mandy supported him and eventually they got back together.
Amelia Spencer left Noah Dingle devastated when she ended their relationship for good in Emmerdale. She even insisted he could no longer be a part of her daughter Esther’s life, despite Noah having been a father figure to her.
It’s clear Noah has struggled with being rejected by Amelia, having continuously tried to please her. He even reported Samson to the police in order to try and keep their relationship working without his interference.
In the past, Noah hasn’t handled rejection from love interests well. So, could being dumped by Amelia send him off the rails?

Amelia rejects Noah
In tonight’s episode of Emmerdale (Monday August 12), Noah expressed his concerns about not being a part of Esther’s life during a chat with Chas. She encouraged him to speak to Amelia about being present in Esther’s life.
Later, Noah and Amelia were left alone to chat about their split. Visibly emotional, Noah asked if he could still see Esther despite him and Amelia being over. She told him it wouldn’t be a good idea and felt they needed to completely cut ties with each other in a bid to move forward.
Noah was left devastated by Amelia’s words and could be seen breaking down after she left.

Noah’s chequered past
Before dating Amelia, Noah once had a crush on Gabby Thomas. He developed feelings for Gabby after being hired by Jamie Tate to spy on her. However, Noah let his feelings cloud his judgement while spying on Gabby and he began acting strangely.
One scene many fans fail to forget is Noah feeling Gabby’s underwear in a washing basket. Noah was caught by Will, who then told Gabby what he had saw. This led to Gabby telling Noah to leave her alone. He then followed her home one evening, causing a confrontation between the pair.
When Liv was attacked while drunk, Gabby concluded that Noah must have been behind the attack. Eventually he was proven to be innocent, but Gabby did tell everyone what Noah had done to her.
After the drama with Gabby, Noah began seeing Chloe Harris and it wasn’t long until he began acting strangely. The duo were on and off for a while, and eventually Noah set out to win Chloe back. This sparked a stalking and harassment storyline, which saw Noah secretly install a tracker on Chloe’s phone, film her using a drone and break into her home.
He also stole her diary and planted a microphone in her bedroom. Eventually, Chloe figured out what Noah was up to after finding a file titled with her initials on the laptop. Noah ended up serving three months in prison after his mum Charity reported him.

Emmerdale fans predict Noah could resort to his old tricks
Emmerdale fans have predicted Noah could resort to his old ways following his split from Amelia. He has been left devastated by their break-up and struggled to accept the relationship is over.
Taking to social media, one person said: “I hope Noah doesn’t start being a pervy little [bleep] again.” A second fan shared a similar comment, adding: “All this stuff might return Noah to his old knicker sniffing ways.”
Others have slammed Amelia for rejecting Noah after everything he’s done for her and Esther.
“I never thought I’d say this but you can do better than misery guts Amelia, Noah,” one fan said, while a second added: “I can’t believe I’m saying this but I feel sorry for Noah. Incredibly dramatic from Amelia.”
But, will Noah soon return to his old ways now that Amelia’s cut him out of both her and Esther’s lives?
Aaron Dingle thought with his pants in this week’s Emmerdale when he bedded his internet date on the side of the road without even finding out his name. The guy then drove off with Aaron’s keys, wallet and beloved hoodie.
As if all that wasn’t bad enough, when Aaron did find out his name, it turned out to be John Sugden. And yes, he’s a real Sugden, half-brother of Aaron’s ex, Robert. Oops.
But it’s not the first time Aaron’s love-life has been complicated. Let’s take a look at his romantic history.
Victoria was Aaron’s first girlfriend (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)
Aaron and Victoria Sugden
Turns out, Robert and John aren’t the only Sugdens Aaron’s been with – he actually lost his virginity to Victoria. When Aaron first arrived in Emmerdale he hadn’t yet realised he was gay (or at least was trying to pretend he wasn’t). He and Victoria got together and had sex.
But when he found out she’d also slept with her foster brother, Daz Eden, Aaron dumped her.
He then turned his attentions to Holly Barton, but when he tried to blackmail her for sex it really put paid to any chance he might have had!
Aaron’s attraction to men first came to light when he and Adam Barton were involved in a car crash. Adam pulled away and Aaron immediately insisted Aaron had misunderstood and was imagining things. To prove it, he managed to get Holly to be his girlfriend after all.
Adam was not impressed given Holly was his sister. He tried to tell everyone what happened, but no one believed him. Angry Aaron confronted him about spreading rumours, but Adam insisted he wasn’t, he just didn’t want Aaron dating his sister when he’s gay. Holly and Aaron broke up soon after.
Jackson’s story ended tragically (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)
Jackson Walsh: Aaron’s first love in Emmerdale
Jackson was Aaron’s first true love. The pair met at a gay bar in Hotten but Aaron was still struggling with his sexuality. When Paddy worked out what was really going on between Aaron and Jackson Aaron beat him to a pulp.
Still, Paddy stood by him and encouraged him to accept his sexuality. But Aaron would not. However he continued to see Jackson.
Aaron then violently punched Jackson and got charged with assault when he thought Jackson was about to out him to the village. Aaron was sentenced to community service and eventually revealed he was gay. He and Jackson then got together properly.
Tragedy struck when Jackson told Aaron he loved him and then drove off, upset, when Aaron didn’t say it back. Aaron called him, Jackson tried to answer his phone and crashed. He got stuck on a railway line. He was horribly injured when a train hit a van which then smashed into his car.
Jackson was paralysed from the neck down. He and Aaron broke up briefly and Aaron went on dates with a man called Flynn Buchanan, but could not forget about Jackson. They reconciled and pledged their love for one another.
However, Jackson could not come to terms with his new state. He made the difficult decision to end his life. Reluctantly, Aaron and Jackson’s mum, Hazel, agreed to help. Hazel brought the drugs to Jackson, but couldn’t give them to her son. So instead, Aaron was the one who handed them over. Jackson took the pills and passed away.
In a video message, played at his funeral, he told the mourners that his death was his own choice. That meant Aaron and Hazel didn’t get into trouble for it.
Romance blossomed with Ed (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)
Ed Roberts – the man Aaron left Emmerdale with
Rugby player Ed brought a minibus to the garage for Aaron to fix. After confusion over Aaron and Adam’s relationship, Ed and Aaron shared a kiss. However their first date was soured when Ed discovered Aaron helped Jackson to die.
Ed left, but later let Aaron explain himself. Aaron also showed him his self-harming scars. The couple spent the night together.
But things moved very fast for the pair when Ed revealed he was signed to a French rugby team and was leaving in four weeks. He asked Aaron to go with him.
At first Aaron said no, reluctant to leave his family. However after Adam started a fire at the garage, Aaron took the blame for his mate and fled to France with Ed in 2012 to escape prison.
When Aaron returned to Emmerdale in 2014, he and Ed had split up, but remained on good terms. And that’s when he met Robert Sugden.
It was toxic, but fans loved Robron! (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)
Robert Sugden – Aaron’s true love?
At first, their relationship was horribly toxic. Robert was engaged to Chrissie White when he called Aaron to a layby to fix his car and then kissed him passionately. Robert later visited him at the garage and they had sex. However, Robert then firmly told Aaron he was straight!
Robert refused to leave Chrissie, but continued his affair with Aaron. Katie Sugden then got suspicious and Aaron, angry at Robert’s lack of commitment, engineered it so she would catch them kissing. However, the set-up led to Katie’s death.
Things got incredibly difficult between them after that. They were off and then on again and then off and then on, Aaron began over-exercising, running himself into the ground, and at one point Robert held him hostage and pointed a gun at him.
But after Robert was shot by Ross Barton things changed. It was Robert who got Aaron to confess his sexual abuse from his dad as a child. And Robert stood by him during the trial. He also helped Aaron get to know half-sister Liv Flaherty.
Though the pair still had their ups and downs – not least Aaron going to prison and Robert having a one-night stand with Rebecca White which resulted in him becoming a dad to little Seb – they married and settled down.
But their life together came to an end when Robert’s sister Victoria was raped by Lee Posner. Robert attacked her rapist, who died. Robert was sentenced to 14 years in prison in 2019 and divorced Aaron to ‘set him free’. Robron were no more.
Lee’s brother Luke later confessed that he also attacked Lee on the same day he died, and Victoria thought that would be enough to see Robert free. But sadly, Rob decided not to pursue the case and he’s still in prison.

Aaron began hooking up with random guys on dating apps in order to blot out the pain of the split. But by late 2020 Aaron was almost ready to move on. Coincidentally that’s when he reconnected with old school friend Ben Tucker. We say ‘friend’ but actually Aaron had bullied Ben and waged a campaign of homophobic abuse against him, so they weren’t really friends.
However, Ben forgave his former bully and the pair started a romance.
Liv – Aaron’s sister – caused a few troubles for the couple. Ben’s dad was an alcoholic and when Liv was struggling with drink, Ben didn’t want to be around her.
And the romance ended in tragedy when Ben became a victim of Emmerdale serial killer Meena.

Aaron and John Sugden in Emmerdale – a replacement Robert?
On Wednesday (August 7), Aaron went off to meet an internet date. But he was stopped in a layby – incidentally the same layby he first hooked up with Robert in – by a man with a broken down van.
Talk about coincidence, the guy was only Aaron’s date! So rather than go to the hotel, the pair just got down and dirty in the van by the side of the road, without even knowing each other’s name.
He certainly seems to be Aaron’s type – moody, brooding, somewhat aggressive, oh, and he’s also a Sugden! That’s Aaron completing the Sugden hattrick then!
John Sugden is the half-brother of Victoria and Robert – and this makes things really rather awkward indeed.
However, even when Aaron confronted John and asked what he was playing at, and then got a punch in the stomach for it, it seemed pretty clear there was plenty of sexual tension between them. So how long before they can’t fight that attraction any more – and this becomes very complicated indeed?
The Sugdens are Emmerdale’s longest-running family and have been there since the very beginning.
Created by Kevin Laffan – the writer who dreamt up the idea of Emmerdale – the Sugdens were introduced during the first episode and quickly established themselves as the show’s central family.
In fact during the first two decades of Emmerdale being on air, the majority of storylines were focused around them.
The family was originally made up of widowed farmer Annie Sugden and her three grown up children, Jack Sugden, Peggy Skilbeck and Joe Sugden.
The clan came from a generation of agricultural workers. They resided in Emmerdale Farm, which was located on the outskirts of the village, then called Beckindale.
The size of the family has changed a lot since then. Now only three Sugdens remain in Emmerdale – Victoria, her son Harry and niece Sarah. However, John Sugden is on his way!
Here’s a look at the Sugdens past and present and the part they’ve played in village life.

Annie and Jacob Sugden – heads of the Sugden family in Emmerdale
Annie Sugden was Emmerdale’s first matriarch and branded by many as a ‘heroine’.
The popular character was played by actress Sheila Mercier. She remains the longest-serving female character in the soap’s history.
Annie was the long-suffering wife of farmer Jacob Sugden, who she married in 1945.
Jacob died in 1972 from liver failure, and his funeral took place in the first episode.
By all accounts Jacob was a neglectful alcoholic who’d left Annie to juggle the responsibilities of looking after the farm with raising a young family.
Annie and Jacob had three children – Jack, Peggy and Joe – and tragically, she outlived them all.
During her life Annie overcame financial woes, an addiction to painkillers, and was left in a coma for three months after being injured in the 1993 Emmerdale plane crash – which also claimed the life of her second husband, Leonard Kempinski.
In July 1994, Annie left the Dales to start a new life in Spain. The following year she married her old friend and former Woolpack landlord Amos Brearly.
Annie popped back several times over the years. She was last seen on screen in February 2009 when she attended the funeral of her son, Jack.
She remained living in Spain until her death in August 2020, aged 100.

Jack Sugden
John Jacob ‘Jack’ Sugden was the son of Annie and Jacob Sugden.
One of Emmerdale’s original characters, Jack was first played by actor Andrew Burt, before Clive Hornby took over the role in 1980.
Jack was the father of Jackie Merrick, Robert and Victoria Sugden and adoptive dad to Andy Sugden.
He was a valued member of the community, and probably best remembered for his love of plaid shirts and flat caps.
Growing up, Jack had little interest in following in his parents’ farming footsteps and moved to London to pursue a career as an author.
He returned on the day of his father’s funeral in October 1972 to claim his inheritance, but was met with opposition from his siblings, Joe and Peggy.
Jack’s return to the Sugden family in Emmerdale
Jack lived in Italy between 1976 and 1980 before returning to live permanently in the village.
In the years that followed he discovered he’d fathered a son – Jackie – with childhood sweetheart Ruth Harker, who went by the name of Pat.
Jack and Pat went on to marry and welcomed son Robert in April 1986. But tragedy struck four months later when she died in a car crash. Three years later, Jack was dealt another crushing loss when Jackie was killed in a shooting accident.
Jack eventually married librarian Sarah Connolly. They had a daughter, Victoria.
The couple adopted troubled youngster Andy Sugden and moved their family to a new farm, but affairs tore their marriage and family unit apart.
After Sarah died in a fire that was started by son Andy, Jack started a romance with Woolpack landlady, Diane Blackstock. The couple got hitched in 2004 and remained together until Jack’s sudden death.
Jack passed away in February 2009 while visiting mum Annie in Spain. His body was brought back to England and he was laid to rest in the village cemetery.
Matt’s wife Peggy also met a tragic end (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)
She was played by Jo Kendall and the first character to speak a line of dialogue in Emmerdale.
Peggy worked as an accountant for her family’s farm, in which she also had shares.
She was married to labourer Matt Skilbeck, but had dreams of quitting the countryside for suburbia. Peggy fell pregnant in 1972 and gave birth to twins Sam and Sally in the April of the following year.
Sadly, just months after giving birth, Peggy collapsed and died from a brain haemorrhage. She was buried in the village churchyard next to her father, Jacob.
After Peggy’s death, Matt sent Sam and Sally to live with his aunt Beattie Dowton. But in January 1976, the children and Beattie were killed when a train struck their car on a level crossing.

Joe Sugden
Joseph Sugden was the youngest of Annie and Jacob Sugden’s children.
He was played by actor Frazer Hines and appeared in over 1500 episodes of the soap.
Despite an often tricky relationship with his brother Jack, Joe was incredibly loyal to the Sugdens and had worked tirelessly to keep Emmerdale Farm going when it fell on hard times as a result of Jacob’s alcoholism.
He was briefly married to Christine Sharp and then set up home with old friend, Kathy Gimbel – a move which was considered something of a scandal in 1977.
After a period living in France, Joe returned to Emmerdale in 1986 and beat local businessman Alan Turner to the post of regional manager for NY Estates.
In 1988, Joe became the co-owner of Home Farm with Alan, but the pair were conned out of the property by bent businessman Denis Rigg.
Joe went on to marry divorcee Kate Hughes, and took on her two teenagers Rachel and Mark as his own. The marriage turned sour in 1991 and Kate left, but Joe remained close to his stepchildren.
Mark’s death in a car crash broke Joe’s heart. He fled to Spain to see mum, Annie.
He was killed in a road traffic accident the following year.
The Sugden family in Emmerdale: Jack’s family
Jack’s first wife was also actor Clive Hornby’s real-life wife (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)
Pat Sugden
Jack’s first wife, Pat was also known by her middle name of Ruth. Her maiden name was Harker. Pat was Jack’s ex and he had no idea he was the father of her son, Jackie Merrick.
When Pat and Jack reconnected in 1972, she was married to alcoholic Tom Merrick. who was violent towards her. But as she grew closer to Jack again, she knew she had to leave and the Merrick family moved away.
But Pat and Tom divorced and in 1980 she and her children returned to Emmerdale. She and Jack were married and their relationship was fiery to say the least. Jack even had an affair with Karen Moore.
In real life Jack actor Clive Hornby married Pat actress Helen Weir and she fell pregnant. So they wrote the pregnancy into the storylines and Robert was born.
However Helen had a dispute with producers over her real-life son playing her on-screen son. She didn’t want to call him by another name, but as he was called Thomas, the name of her abusive ex, show bosses couldn’t agree. Helen decided to leave the show.

Jackie Merrick
John Jacob ‘Jackie’ Merrick was the son of Pat Merrick (originally Ruth Harker) and Jack Sugden.
He was played by Ian Sharrock and featured in over 700 episodes.
Jackie was the half-brother of Robert and Victoria Sugden.
Jackie had grown up believing his dad was Ruth’s husband Tom Merrick. He was 17 when he discovered Jack was actually his biological father. He didn’t take the news well and it was a good five years before Jackie acknowledged Jack as being part of his life.
Jackie moved back to the village with his mum Pat and sister Sandie in 1980 and took up a job as a farm labourer, before becoming a gamekeeper’s assistant. Jackie possessed a rebellious streak and set fire to a caravan, which put paid to his dream of pursuing a career in the army.
The character settled down in 1988 and married Kathy Bates, but the couple didn’t even make it to their first wedding anniversary.
Jackie died the following year in a freak accident when he accidentally shot himself with his own gun. The last mention of him was in 2005 when Jack remarked to Tom King about his dead son.

Robert Sugden
Robert Jacob Sugden is the son of the late Jack and Pat Sugden, adoptive son of Sarah Sugden, and brother of Jackie, Tommy and Sandie Merrick, Victoria Sugden and adoptive brother of Andy Sugden.
He’s also the estranged husband of Aaron Dingle and father of Sebastian White.
The character has been played by four different actors over the years, most recently Ryan Hawley.
Ruthless, charming, cunning and manipulative, Robert remains to this day one of Emmerdale’s most complex characters.
The brothers’ feud resulted in the death of Max King. Robert fled the village to avoid being arrested.

Robert’s return to the Sugden family in Emmerdale
He returned five years later, engaged to wealthy Chrissie White, the heiress of Home Farm. Robert soon began an explosive affair with Aaron Dingle, and they were dubbed ‘Robron’ by their adoring fanbase.
All hell broke loose when the truth about Robron’s affair was exposed, and weeks later Robert was shot by Ross Barton (on the orders of Andy) – but survived.
In 2017, Robert and Aaron married in an unofficial ceremony before Aaron was sent to prison on a GBH charge. Whilst Aaron was behind bars, Robert cheated with Chrissie’s half-sister Rebecca White. She then fell pregnant with son Sebastian.
Aaron was devastated, but eventually forgave Robert and the couple legally wed in 2019.
However, their happy ever after wasn’t to be.
When Robert discovered his sister Victoria had been the victim of rape, he set out to get revenge on her attacker, Lee Posner. He killed him in a fit of rage. Robert pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 14 years in prison.

Sarah Sugden
The second wife of Jack, mother to Victoria and adoptive mother of Robert and Andy Sugden, Sarah was played by Madeleine Howard from 1988-1994 and then Alyson Spiro from 1994 to 2000.
Librarian Sarah fell for Jack and eventually he decided he liked her to. By January 1994 Jack proposed to her and she gave birth to their daughter Victoria in March of the same year. They married in May.
Jack had an affair with Rachel Hughes and Sarah threw him out. But eventually she forgave him and they gave their marriage another shot.
Financial struggles caused problems between the pair with Sarah reluctant to work on the farm. Jack sold her car without her consent and when she was involved in a bus crash, it left her bed-bound for several weeks.
During this time she started to confide her marriage woes in lodger Richie Carter. They had an affair and eventually she left Jack and moved in with Richie. But they had problems as he wasn’t interested in her children, and money also became an issue.
She considered going back to Jack. When she and Richie were in a barn discussing their relationship, Andy set fire to it, in order to claim on the insurance. But he had no idea Sarah was in there.
Richie escaped, but Sarah was killed. Jack was arrested for her murder, but was found not guilty at the trial and was free to return to his family.

Victoria Sugden
Victoria Sugden is the only daughter of the late Jack and Sarah Sugden, and sister to Jackie Merrick, Robert Sugden and adoptive sister of Andy Sugden.
She is Emmerdale’s current on-screen longest-serving female character, having been part of the show since her birth in March 1994, and is played by actress Isobel Hodgins.
Victoria has been through a lot in her 30 years!
As a baby she had to undergo life-saving surgery when it was discovered she had a hole in her heart and dealt with the heartbreaking loss of her mum when she was just six years old.
Following Sarah’s untimely demise, Victoria was raised by dad Jack and his wife Diane, who Vic considered a mother figure.
The character’s other storylines include being bullied at school, a stint in psychiatric care, nearly drowning after falling through an icy lake, and causing a near-fatal explosion.
Victoria had a childhood romance with troublemaker Daz Eden. She then found love with famers’ son Adam Barton, who she married in 2015. Adam fled the country three years later after taking the rap for a murder he didn’t commit, which left Victoria completely distraught.
But worse was to come in April 2019 when Victoria became the victim of rape. Her horrific attack resulted in pregnancy. Victoria gave birth to her son Harry in 2020.
She’s currently juggling motherhood with her busy job at the HOP.
Love-life wise, Victoria recently raised a few eyebrows by embarking on a romance with Jacob Gallagher, who is the stepson of her former lover, David Metcalfe. However they split up when Vic realised Jacob was putting his life on hold for her.

Andy Sugden
Andrew ‘Andy’ Sugden (previously Hopwood) is the adoptive son of Jack and Sarah Sugden, adoptive brother of Robert and Victoria and half-brother of Darren ‘Daz’ Eden. He was played by actor Kelvin Fletcher from 1996 to 2016.
Andy’s upbringing was dysfunctional and difficult. His birth mum, Trisha died when he was little and he was placed in the care of his grandmother while his dad Billy was serving time in Strangeways Prison.
After his grandmother’s death, Andy was fostered – and later adopted in 2000 – by Jack and Sarah Sugden.
When his parents’ marriage and the family farm ran into trouble, Andy set fire to a barn to claim on the insurance. However, he accidentally killed Sarah in the blaze.
But that wasn’t the only time Andy committed manslaughter.
After discovering Robert had been having an affair with his wife, Katie, Andy plotted to have his revenge. He lay in wait with gun, but unwittingly pulled the trigger on Jack, almost killing him.
After his split from Katie, Andy moved on with Debbie Dingle, who fell pregnant with his daughter, Sarah. They went on to have another child, Jack, seven years later.
Andy’s crimes did finally catch up with him. He was sentenced to three years in prison for Sarah’s murder, but was released after only a few weeks.
He married second wife, Jo Stiles, but subjected her to terrible abuse and she eventually left him. After suffering a complete mental breakdown, Andy was forced to sell his beloved farm to the Barton family.
The beginning of the end for Andy
By 2014, Andy was back with his first love, Katie and the couple got married. Months later, Katie was accidentally killed by Robert after she threatened to expose his affair with Aaron. When Andy discovered the truth he arranged for Ross Barton to shoot Robert – but he lived to tell the tale.
Andy’s time in the village came to a dramatic end when he was framed for shooting Lawrence White. Forced to go on the run, Andy fled with the help of Robert and former flame Bernice Blackstock.
Still a fugitive, his whereabouts remain unknown.
Jack’s widow has since moved to Portugal (Credit: ITV)
The character, played by Elizabeth Estensen, starred in over 2800 episodes of Emmerdale between 1999 and 2021, and was landlady of The Woolpack pub.
Diane was a tower of strength for Jack as she helped him come to terms with the death of his wife, Sarah. The pair’s friendship eventually blossomed into romance.
The couple married on September 21 2004. But a dark shadow loomed over their big day as Diane was diagnosed with cancer just weeks before.
She went on to make a full recovery. However, she found her new life as stepmum to Robert, Andy and Victoria was rather more demanding than she’d anticipated.
The strain of managing their rowdy brood led Diane and Jack to temporarily split up.
They reconciled, but tragedy struck in 2009 when Jack passed away while visiting his mum, Annie, in Spain.
Diane stayed living in the village for another 13 years and continued to play an important part in the Sugden kids’ lives.
She finally bid farewell to the Dales in October 2021 and has only popped back once since – for the show’s 50th anniversary episodes in 2022.
Named after her adoptive gran, Sarah Sugden Jr (Credit: ITV)
Sarah Sugden Jr
Sarah Sugden is the daughter of Andy Sugden and Debbie Dingle and the older sister of Jack Sugden.
Born in June 2005, she was named after Andy’s late adoptive mother, who had died five years earlier.
Debbie and Andy split up when she was only a month old, and struggled with the responsibility of parenthood, which meant Sarah spent the first few years of her life being pushed from pillar to post.
In 2009, Debbie was awarded full custody of her daughter and they moved to Jersey.
Two years later Sarah came home to the village and was diagnosed with Fanconi anemia – a rare genetic disorder which required a bone marrow transplant to save her life.
No one was a match so Debbie and Andy made the decision to conceive a saviour sibling for Sarah. Her baby brother Jack – who was thankfully a match – was born in October 2012, and Sarah underwent a successful bone marrow transplant the following month.
Four years later, Debbie made the decision to take Sarah and Jack to live with her in France. Whilst there, Sarah was diagnosed with throat cancer. She came back to the Dales and underwent surgery, chemotherapy, followed by a heart transplant.
When Debbie made the decision to move to Scotland, Sarah opted to stay behind in the village.
She’s been kept under the watchful eye of her grandparents Charity and Cain. But that hasn’t stopped Sarah rebelling, getting mixed up in the wrong crowd and dabbling in drugs.
With those difficult teenage years now behind her, Sarah seems to have finally settled down. She has just started working as Barton and Dingle Automotives new apprentice mechanic.
Jack Sugden Jr
Jack Sugden Jr is the son of Andy Sugden and Debbie Dingle and was named after his grandfather, the late Jack Sugden.
He was conceived as a saviour sibling for his sister Sarah, who was diagnosed with rare blood disease Fanconi anaemia and needed a bone marrow transplant.
Jack was born on October 17 2012 and was a match for Sarah, enabling doctors to harvest cells from his bone marrow and transplant them to Sarah.
The character, who was played by actor Seth Bell, was last seen in August 2019 when he left the village with Debbie to start a new life in Scotland.
Sebastian White
Robert’s child with Rebecca White, Sebastian was born as the result of an affair between the two while Aaron was in prison. Aaron accepted Sebastian and became like a father to him as well.
However, when Robert was sentenced to 14 years, Rebecca decided it would be better if Seb no longer saw Aaron. He was devastated.
Sebastian lives in Liverpool with mum Rebecca and her partner Ross Barton.
Harry Sugden – the newest member of the Sugden family in Emmerdale
Harry is Victoria’s son, conceived after she was raped in 2019. Despite the trauma of how she fell pregnant, Vic had always wanted to be a mum and decided to keep the baby.
Newcomer John is a secret Sugden (Credit: ITV)
So how does John fit into the Sugden family in Emmerdale?
Newcomer John was first seen on screen on Wednesday August 8. He met Aaron on a roadside where he had broken down. It turned out the two were actually supposed to be going on a date after meeting online.
It wasn’t long before they were ripping each other’s clothes off, but then John drove off with Aaron’s keys, wallet and hoodie. Aaron hadn’t even got his name, so had no idea he is John Sugden, half brother of his imprisoned husband!
Victoria meets John on Thursday August 8. She drives Eric Pollard to a funeral and ends up chatting to the son of the dead woman. He then introduces himself as John Sugden and Eric explains how the whole thing fits together.
So John is the son of Jack, who had a fling with his mum some years ago. It makes him the half-brother of Victoria, Robert and Jackie and adoptive half-brother of Andy.
When his van breaks down again, John will end up in the village. But something tells us he’s going to cause a whole lot more trouble!
Rodney Blackstock in Emmerdale has had quite the romantic life in his almost 75 years on this earth. In fact he’s still keen to keep going as long as he can!
But while he doesn’t have a love interest at the moment, he has had some pretty questionable liaisons in the past – just take Simon’s mum, Lesley, for one!
Let’s take a look at Rodney’s very lively love life.
Diane was furious to see Rodney again (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)
Rodney and Diane in Emmerdale
Born in 1949, Rodney met Diane Lambert at a fairground when she was 18 and he was 16. They got married in 1965 and had a child, Bernice in 1968.
However Rodney left them without any explanation when Bernice was just five years old. It turned out he’d been having an affair with her sister Val Lambert, which produced son Paul in 1974.
Rodders then went on to marry Maureen, who gave birth to their daughter, Nicola Blackstock in 1978.
Diane was shocked to see him when he arrived in Emmerdale in October 2000. Ashley Thomas had invited him to meet Bernice, but he had no idea their history was so troubled.
This wasn’t love (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)
Louise Appleton
Sticking true to form, charmer Rodney went for a younger woman when he first arrived in the shape of Louise Appleton. He was rich and suave, what was not to like!
However, there was still a burning attraction between him and Diane. They couldn’t help themselves and ended up in bed together. Louise dumped Rodney and he decided to focus on work not women – for a while, at least!
Turned out Rodney didn’t have enough money to buy Steph’s love (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)
Steph Stokes
In 2003, Rodney and Steph Stokes were in a relationship. He was all-in and proposed to her. However, they ended up calling off the engagement when it became clear Steph wasn’t actually into him and was in it for his money. That complicated matters when she realised Rodders wasn’t as rich as she thought, so it came to an end.
Val had always wanted Rodney (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)
Rodney and Val Lambert in Emmerdale
So we know Rodney and Val had an affair, but at this point his ex-wife Diane did not know. So when Val pitched up in Emmerdale in 2004, things got very complicated.
Val was thrilled to see Rodney was still rich and handsome, so started dating him. But although he enjoyed Val’s company, truthfully he was still in love with Diane.
Val then made him confess their previous affair to Diane, which he did. Diane was upset, but was soon distracted by her colon cancer diagnosis. She confided in Rodney, who declared his undying love for her. She rejected an offer to rekindle their relationship and chose boyfriend Jack Sugden instead.
Things soured with Val after this and they had a huge showdown outside the church at the wedding of Diane and Jack. She then revealed he was the father of Paul, something he hadn’t known until now. Val then left and Rodney was single again.

Rodney and Lesley Meredith and Kelly Windsor
Rodney loved a complicated love life it seemed when he bedded Lesley Meredith. She was the mother of Nicola’s boyfriend, Simon, and fell instantly in love with Rodney when she arrived in 2004.
Smitten Lesley thought all her Christmases had come at once when she and Rodney spent the night together. However, he was immediately full of regret and didn’t know how to break the news to her this wasn’t a happily-ever-after kind of thing.
So Kelly Windsor did it for her! She took Lesley’s place alongside Rodney at an event he was attending and Lesley was left humiliated and heartbroken.
But Rodney didn’t notice because he was fully engrossed in his fling with Kelly. That then turned in a serious relationship between the pair despite the 31-year age gap.
Rodney even bought Holdgate Farm for her and Paul to turn into a spa. However, he ran out of money and the plans for the spa had to be abandoned. Kelly promised she would stand by Rodney, but couldn’t help but be distracted by ex lover Scott Windsor. Rodney caught them together and they split up.

Rodney becomes a male escort in Emmerdale
After he began dating Georgia Sharma, Rishi’s ex, Rodney decided one woman wasn’t enough so he became a male escort behind Georgia’s back.
It was good money and he was having a good time, but he was soon to be caught out. He had accompanied one of Georgia’s friends to a formal party and when she then met Rodders as Georgia’s boyfriend his secret was exposed. However, surprisingly Georgia took him back and allowed him to continue due to the money he made!
Things got a little fruity when Veronica, Georgia’s mate, tried to seduce him. In a very un-Rodney way, he actually refused! His next job was with a woman called Janet who wanted to make her husband jealous, but the husband ended up punching Pollard in a case of mistaken identity (thanks to Rodney not owning up!)

Misty
Rodney went for another age-gap romance when he got together with Misty, who was 40 years his junior. She saw him as his spirit animal rather than an old man and to Bernice and Nicola’s disgust they enjoyed a very active sex life.
The sisters plotted to get rid of Misty and pulled it off. They lied that Rodney had osteoarthritis and only had a few months of normal life left. So Misty dumped him and left for Thailand.
Diane made a huge drunken mistake – more than once! (Credit: ITV)
Emmerdale: Rodney and Diane again!
Back in 2021, Rodney and Diane had a drunken wild night out – that ended in the sack for them! He was desperate for them to get back together, trying every trick in his very old playbook. But she was adamant it was just a one-night stand.
However, his luck when in when Diane was upset by comments Belle made. Feeling vulnerable, Rodney comforted her and she gave into his advances again. She even drunkenly agreed to move in with him.
Full of regret the next day, Diane tried to back out of her promise, but an injury left her needing Rodney more than ever! However, by October 2021 she had made up her mind – she left Rodney – and the village of Emmerdale – behind.
So was Diane Rodney’s one true love? He hasn’t had much in the way of romance since then, but surely a man like Rodney’s not given up the game yet?!
Laurel Potts married Ashley Thomas in Classic Emmerdale on Tuesday August 6. As she goes through a messy divorce from Jai Sharma in current Emmerdale episodes, it got us thinking about her one true love – was it Ashley?
They married twice, got through some dreadful things and were together until his end. If that’s not soulmates, then what is?
Here’s their history together as we remember the good times, the bad and the very ugly for Laurel and Ashley Thomas.
It was a rocky start for Laurel and Ashley (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)
Unrequited love
Laurel fell for Ashley quite soon after her 2002 arrival in the Dales. But he didn’t feel the same and firmly friend-zoned her.
He was dating Louise Appleton at the time, but it was clear they weren’t really in love with each other. They were involved in a car crash during a storm in 2004 and nearly died. It made them reassess things and they realised they weren’t right for each other, so parted ways as friends.
Laurel then nursed Ashley back to health following the accident and he started to develop feelings for her. They grew close and eventually started dating.
However Laurel decided to leave to do volunteer work in Tanzania. Ashley tried to stop her by proposing, but she still went.

Laurel and Ashley Thomas in Emmerdale: engaged and married
When Laurel returned, she agreed to marry Ashley, but the bishop refused them permission. He felt Ashley’s sordid love life was affecting his position in the church. So Ashley made a grand gesture and decided to quit.
But he soon realised he couldn’t live without his job and his faith. Laurel gave her blessing for him to return to the church and promised she would wait to marry him.
In the meantime she began confiding in curate Ethan Blake. He fell in love with her, but she rejected his advances. However, Ethan lied to the bishop that he and Laurel had kissed.
When the truth came out, Ethan left the village in shame and the bishop agreed to marry Laurel and Ashley.
As plans for the wedding run away and get bigger and bigger, Laurel just wanted a quiet, small wedding. And so it was, when Ashley read their bans out in church they decided to get married the same day!
Betty gave Laurel her own wedding dress, the bishop carried out the ceremony and the couple were pronounced husband and wife.

Tragedy for Laurel and Ashley
In 2007, Laurel gave birth to their first child together, Daniel. In the hospital she met Melanie Doland, who had also given birth to a baby boy.
Devastation hit when Laurel discovered Daniel dead in his cot a few months later. She moved out as she was unable to be around Ashley and even kissed Melanie’s husband, Greg.
However, before too long Laurel’s mum, Hilary Potts suspected Melanie and Greg’s son was actually Laurel and Ashley’s. She refused to let it go, despite Laurel’s pleas for her to stop betraying Daniel’s memory. A DNA test eventually proved Hilary right and there had been a baby swap at the hospital.
Laurel still wanted nothing to do with her son, despite Ashley starting a custody battle. He told his wife he would raise the boy alone if she didn’t attend the custody hearing. She went and they won, but Laurel found it hard to bond with Arthur. When she feared he had died, however, she soon realised how much she loved and accepted him.

Sally Spode causes trouble
Old flame Sally Spode almost came between Laurel and Ashley – and almost killed Laurel! Claiming to need support from the vicar, Sally ended up moving in with Laurel and Ashley and tried to take over Laurel’s role as wife and mother.
Soon, wanting Ashley for herself, unhinged Sally locked Laurel in the church while it was on fire. Laurel survived and so Sally tried to suffocate her instead. Although Laurel told Ashley her suspicions over Sally’s involvement, he didn’t believe her, so she left him.
However, when Sally made advances on him, Ashley realised his wife had been telling the truth and tried to win her back. Laurel then tracked Sally down to a block of flats where she found a shrine to Ashley. Laurel attacked Sally, but soon came to her senses and Sally was arrested.

Divorce for Laurel and Ashley
Things were tough for Laurel and Ashley and with Ashley’s dad, Sandy, living with them, she began to spend more time out of the house – and with a certain Marlon Dingle. It was clear they had a connection and it was just a matter of time before they couldn’t fight it any longer.
Ashley was desperately trying to make his marriage work and started taking his anger out on Sandy. Ashley became abusive to his dad and when Laurel caught him, she demanded a divorce.
In a weird twist of fate, Ashley was arrested and made homeless as Laurel stayed at the vicarage with the kids and Sandy. So Marlon asked him to move in with him – despite he and Laurel now being in a relationship!
Laurel and Ashley eventually found their way back to being friends.

Things between Marlon and Laurel did not work out. She became an alcoholic after Ross Barton car-jacked her and their marriage crumbled. It was only thinking that Ashley was dead after she saw him getting hit by a car that stunned Laurel into getting clean. So it was obvious her feelings for him had resurfaced.
Despite him being with Harriet, Laurel knew she wanted them to get back together. However what she didn’t know was that Ashley had been diagnosed with early on-set vascular dementia.
When Harriet and Ashley broke up, Laurel made her move. But Ashley rejected her and confessed his illness. He told her he loved her, but couldn’t be with her due to the future looking so bleak.
But despite his adamance that he wouldn’t allow Laurel to be his carer, she protested she loved him and wanted to be with him. He soon realised he couldn’t do it alone and Laurel was who he wanted to be with in his final days.
Laurel soon fell pregnant and decided to have a termination. She felt she couldn’t cope with her alcoholism and Ashley’s illness as well as a new baby. However she couldn’t go through with it and the couple welcomed baby Dotty in 2016. They also remarried.

Ashley dies
After the Hotton Bypass crash in 2016 and then Christmas, Ashley’s condition was rapidly deteriorating. The only option was to put him into a care home as he no longer recognised his family.
By March 2017, Ashley began coughing up blood and was diagnosed with pneumonia. Laurel was given the devastating news he only had days to live. She brought him home to die.
In early April, Ashley regained consciousness momentarily and recognised Laurel. She then went upstairs to get another pillow for him and he died peacefully. Laurel tearfully hugged his body as Sandy, Bernice, Gabby and Arthur all joined her.
She and Ashley shared a final moment when she fell asleep after his funeral. She woke up to find him talking to her on the television. They recalled their happy moments together and he said a final goodbye to the love of his life.
