Amy Barton in Emmerdale – a complete timeline from baby with Cain and actress switch to lake death reveal

It’s not looking good for Amy Barton in Emmerdale as she fights for her life after falling under the ice. And she’s the only one who can reveal Nate is dead under there too!

The poor lass has had a turbulent time since she first appeared in the Dales in 2010 and looked set to finally find some happiness, adopting a child with husband Matty. But that is about to be snatched away from her.

Her life has had its ups and downs, so let’s take a look at a complete timeline of Amy Barton (neé Wyatt) in Emmerdale.

2010 – Amy arrives in Emmerdale

When her car broke down in Emmerdale village in October 2010, we met Amy Wyatt for the first time. She was played by Chelsea Halfpenny. Amy was clearly used to scamming as she pretended to be pregnant by stuffing a jumper up her top, lied she was a trainee nurse to get a discount at the B&B and then tried to flee without paying.

Victoria Sugden soon realised Amy was only 16 and had run away from her foster care home. It wasn’t long before social services turned up and took her back to her foster parents.

But Amy returned to visit Victoria not long afterwards, who hid her new mate in the basement of the B&B. It wasn’t long before Val Pollard found her and the two developed a close bond. Eventually Amy moved in with Val and Eric and the were granted approval to adopt her.

2011 – One-night stand with Cain and baby bombshell

Amy grew close to Pollard’s son David Metcalfe and developed a bit of a crush on him. He was kind to her and paid her attention and she even slept with Cain Dingle to make David jealous.

When Amy then tried to kiss David, he let her down gently, but she blackmailed him by pretending they slept together. Eventually Amy was caught out.

It wasn’t long before her liaison with Cain came back to haunt her: she was pregnant with his baby. Cain was not gallant at all over the revelation telling her to have an abortion or he would hurt her.

However Amy was too far gone to terminate the pregnancy and had to have the baby. She went into labour on December 1 2011 and gave birth to a baby boy in the churchyard. She believed the baby to be stillborn as he didn’t move or cry, so wrapped him in her jumper and left him in the local telephone box.

Amy confessed what had happened to David, but Hazel Rhodes had already found the baby and called an ambulance. David got Amy to hospital where she apologised to Eric and Val for keeping her pregnancy a secret.

The baby was called Kyle after Kylie, the nurse who looked after him. But Amy struggled to care for him and after almost drowning him in the bath, she called social services to come and collect him. She wanted him to be adopted so he didn’t have to live in foster care like she did.

Val was distraught, but Amy remained firm and Kyle was given up for adoption.

2012 – Amy reunites with mum Kerry Wyatt in Emmerdale

On a night out in Hotten, Amy kissed a guy, but was pulled off him and attacked by his girlfriend – who turned out to be Amy’s estranged mum Kerry.

Kerry moved to the Dales and started a relationship with Andy Sugden. However that ended badly when she got drunk looking after his son Jack and started a fire.

Kerry went on holiday and when she came back she found Amy and Andy kissing. She tricked Andy into believing she was pregnant to split them up. When the truth was revealed neither Andy nor Amy wanted anything to do with her.

2013 – Amy kidnaps Kyle and leaves Emmerdale

In 2013 Kyle’s adoptive parents died and Amy decided to go to the funeral. Kyle was now under the care of his adoptive grandmother Joanie Wright. Amy claimed to be a friend of his parents and began babysitting for him. But when Joanie discovered the truth, Amy was banned from having any contact with him.

Joanie softened, but when Amy wanted to get full custody she was told by social services she didn’t have any chance. Amy then tried to force her way into Joanie’s home to see Kyle so Joanie took out restraining order.

Desperate to get her son back, Amy kidnapped Kyle from his playgroup and tried to flee with Ireland with him. Cain managed to stop her at the ferry, but even though she didn’t take Kyle, Amy ran to Ireland alone for a new life.

2019 – Amy returns to Emmerdale – with a new face!

In 2019 Kyle was living with Cain Dingle after Joanie’s death and Kerry wanted him back. So she travelled to Ireland to track down Amy so she could help fight for custody.

Amy, now played by Natalie Ann Jamieson, was being attacked by a man when Kerry found her, but Amy revealed she was working for a women’s shelter and it was the violent husband of one of the women. Amy refused to return to Emmerdale.

However she later relented and came back, where the Dingles warned her she had no legal rights to Kyle. Amy told Cain she would fight him, but Cain agreed she could see Kyle and tell him she was his mum. Kyle took the news well and they began to grow closer.

2019 – Kerry and Amy kill Frank

Amy was being blackmailed by a woman who she owed £4000. Amy had stolen the woman’s money to pay off loan sharks after her boyfriend racked up loads of debt and then legged it.

Kerry wanted to help so the pair decided to rob the sweet factory to get the money to pay Karen back. But when they went back to destroy the CCTV of them robbing the place, they started a fire. The factory exploded and Frank Clayton was killed.

Frank’s daughter Tracy found out the truth and a scuffle led to Kerry falling and hitting her head. She agreed not to go to the police over the injuries if Tracy kept quiet over the fire.

To this day, neither Kerry nor Amy have been punished for the fire.

2020 – Getting together with Matty

Amy grew close to Matty Barton in 2020, but vengeful Tracy tried to sabotage their union. However it seemed love really did win out and the pair eventually got together properly.

2024 – Amy married Matty in Emmerdale, but then he goes to prison

2024 was a year of ups and downs for Amy. Firstly she and Matty got married in April in the soap’s first transgender wedding. It almost didn’t happen when Kerry promised to pay for it all, but was unable to come up with the funds. However Eric stepped in and helped it go ahead so Amy and Matty got to say I do.

But months after their happy union, things turned sour when Matty was arrested and sent to prison for stabbing Samson Dingle. In fact, he had been holding a knife when Samson had been pushed on to him, so it had been a complete accident. But egged on by his transphobic friend, Samson had lied to the police and said Matty attacked him for no reason.

Matty endured weeks in prison, terrified to even shower in case they discover he was transgender. Amy stood by him throughout and fought to get him his freedom. Eventually Samson came clean and Matty was released. But his experience left him scarred.

2025 – Adoption and limo disaster death reveal

As things settled down for Amy and Matty she started to feel broody. After ambushing Matty, the pair agreed they would adopt and had a successful meeting with a social worker in February.

However tragedy struck when Amy went on a girls’ night out and the limo they were travelling in crashed on to a frozen lake. Amy fell under the ice and was taken to hospital battling severe hypothermia.

But the big news is while she was under the water she found the body of Nate Robinson. She’s the only person who knows he’s dead and not in Shetland!

Amy has now died, so who is going to reveal that death now?

  • Vanessa Woodfield on Emmerdale: relationship with Charity, Pierce hostage horror, soap exit and return

Vanessa Woodfield on Emmerdale: relationship with Charity, Pierce hostage horror, soap exit and return

Village vet Vanessa Woodfield has been an integral member of the Emmerdale cast ever since joining the village as the new locum in town. Over a decade later, Vanessa is part of the furniture – having weathered cancer, hostage terror and multiple failed romances.

This week Vanessa is at the heart of the drama once more as she finds her life at risk as two limousines crash on a deserted woodland road. Will Vanessa survive? And, with girlfriend Suzy already confirmed dead and ex Charity also in danger, how will she be affected by the consequences of the crash?

Here’s everything you need to know about Emmerdale vet(eran) Vanessa.

    Who plays Vanessa Woodfield?

Vanessa is played by actor Michelle Hardwick. Prior to joining Emmerdale, Michelle appeared in episodes of Hollyoaks, Heartbeat and Coronation Street in a series of smaller roles.

Outside of the soaps, she briefly appeared on American zombie drama The Walking Dead across two episodes in 2018 and 2019, where she played an unnamed survivor in one of the post-apocalyptic outposts.

    When did Vanessa join Emmerdale?

In 2012, she joined the soap as Vanessa. She was hired by Rhona – her old university friend – to work at the vet’s surgery. She and Rhona remained firm friends during her time in the dales, helping Rhona when she learned about her addiction to painkillers.

Upon arriving, she also made friends with Moira Dingle, striking up a strong and abiding friendship with the family. It was in the village that she learned she had a half-sister – Tracy Metcalfe.

How many children does Vanessa have?

In 2015, Vanessa gave birth to her son Johnny. Johnny was the result of the relationship between Vanessa and Kirin Kotecha – Priya’s then-17-year-old stepson-to-be. The pair split up after she had a one-night stand with Adam Barton – and his father edited the result of a DNA test to make it look as though Adam was the baby’s dad.

By 2016, Kirin had learned the truth. He left the village later that year after leaving a woman for dead in a drunken hit-and-run. Kirin returned in 2020, only to face trial for the hit-and-run. He was sentenced to seven years in prison.

    Kidnapped by Pierce

In 2020, Vanessa was held hostage by Rhona’s rapist ex husband, Pierce, who blamed her for ruining his marriage. Keeping her tied up in her own home, Pierce held Vanessa there for weeks.

The police managed to capture Pierce after Rhona injected him with tranquiliser, allowing her to free Vanessa and call the police. He died from cancer while in prison in 2022.

    Stabbed by Lachlan’s dad

In 2018, Vanessa was subject to a brutal attack by Lachlan White’s dad, in a campaign of violence against the Dingles. When she attempted to stop Donny as he tried to set fire to the Woolpack, he stabbed her and took her car – unaware Johnny was hiding in the back.

Charity gave chase, rescuing Johnny and beating Donny with a metal pole, before taking up her rightful place at Vanessa’s bedside.

    Bowel cancer

At the start of 2020, Vanessa was diagnosed with stage three bowel cancer, which had spread to her lymph nodes. She underwent surgery, but was devastated to learn that she’d still need a course of chemotherapy afterwards

She took some time out to recover at her mother’s house. When she returned, she did so with the news that she’d been given the all-clear – however, the positivity wasn’t to last, as she learned that girlfriend Charity had snogged another man while she was away. The pair split, and Vanessa returned to her mum’s for a while.

Relationships with Charity and Suzy – and breaks-up

Together with Charity Dingle, Vanessa made up one half of the soap’s most popular pairings – dubbed ‘Vanity’ by fans. After a tumultuous romance, the pair split up for good after Charity was kissed Mack.

In 2022, she met Suzy Merton. Flirting over a drink (after Vanessa almost run her over!) the pair dated for a while. However, things became tense with them when it was revealed that Suzy had been partly responsible for Holly’s addiction to drugs.

They split later that year, as Vanessa was offered her dream job, and Suzy decided it would be best if she went without her.

Suzy did return to the village and the couple reunited, with it looking for a while like they had found their happy ever after.

But in February 2025, viewers have just witnessed Suzy die in the limo crash on the lake, which has of course left Vanessa devastated.

Why did Michelle Hardwick leave Emmerdale?

Vanessa left the soap in 2022 as actor Michelle took a break from the soap to go on maternity leave. She and wife Kate Brooks welcomed their daughter in November that year.

In the soap, Vanessa left to pursue a job opportunity in Canada. She returned in February this year to support Rhona, who had gotten herself into trouble with the law after kidnapping baby Ivy. Convincing Rhona to return home, Vanessa decided to move back to the village, where she remains to this day.

Will Charity and Vanessa ever get back together?

Ever since she returned to the soap, fans have been hoping that Vanessa and Charity will reconcile. Although there’s no animosity there, Charity did tell Mack that she had ‘no lingering feelings’ for her ex. That hasn’t stopped the fans from hoping though!

Remembering Suzy Merton as she dies in ice crash tragedy: romances with Vanessa and Mary and drugs shame

Tonight’s episode of Emmerdale has revealed the first of the victims of its ice crash stunt – with Suzy Merton dying as the limousine she was in crashed from the road onto an icy lake.

While there was more terror for the others aboard, Suzy’s journey ended there. Vanessa quickly realised that Suzy was no longer breathing as the car came to a halt, and Liam was unable to resuscitate. Goodbye, Suzy.

As Suzy tragically exits the soap, here’s all you need to know about Suzy Merton.

Who plays Suzy Merton on Emmerdale?

Suzy is played by actress Martelle Edinborough. Prior to appearing on Emmerdale, she first popped up in a series of bit-part roles in Coronation Street, Hollyoaks and Doctors.

She also played Thelma in the 2023 horror film Evie – which was directed by Paddy Kirk star Dominic Brunt, and also featured his real-life wife, Joanne Mitchell.

When did Suzy first join Emmerdale?

Suzy made her first appearance on the soap on March 30 2022. The character was introduced as a love interest to Vanessa Woodfield – entering her life rather abruptly when the resident vet almost ran her over!

Initial tensions aside, the pair soon hit it off. Suzy and Vanessa began dating not long after. After deciding to stick around, Suzy made a life for herself in the village, working as an event planner at Take A Vow with Leyla.

Why did Vanessa and Suzy split?

Vanessa and Suzy’s relationship grew complicated when it was revealed that Suzy was a habitual drug user, together with a now-addicted Leyla. The situation came to a head when Vanessa learned that Suzy had been indirectly responsible for Holly Barton’s overdose – having given her the money which she had used to buy the drugs which ultimately killed her.

While Moira could never forgive Suzy, she was understanding when Vanessa gave her a second chance. The pair rekindled their relationship not long after. However, their happiness wouldn’t last…

What happened between Suzy and Mary?

Suzy and Vanessa split for a second time when the vet was offered a chance at her dream job in Canada. Deciding that their relationship couldn’t handle the pressure, Suzy ended things. The pair shared a tender kiss as they bid each other goodbye before Vanessa left the village.

In February 2024, Vanessa returned to the village. She and Suzy resumed dating soon after – bad news for Mary, who had developed feelings for Suzy during her absence. The pair have been solid as a rock ever since. Too solid for their own good, really…

    Is Suzy dead?

If the events of tonight’s episode are anything to go by, then Suzy is pretty definitively dead. As the episode began, Suzy bashed her head during the limo crash. As the car came to rest on the ice, Vanessa realised that she was no longer breathing – and Liam concurred that she was dead.

With the car sinking, a heartbroken Vanessa was forced to say goodbye.

    Why did Suzy leave Emmerdale?

With Suzy’s exit still fresh, neither the soap nor Martelle have confirmed whether she was killed off or the actress decided to leave. Just another lingering question in the aftermath of its horrifying ice crash.

Liam Cavanagh and his chequered love life: marriage to Maya, romance with Chas and who he should really be with

As Dr Liam Cavanagh plans to propose to Chas Dingle in Emmerdale, disaster is set to strike when the limo they are in crashes. Will Liam get the answer he’s after before everything changes?

It isn’t the first time things have gone wrong for Liam, in fact he’s had quite the chequered love life. But who was his worst mistake – the paedophile or the child killer? And is Chas really the one for him?

    Liam’s first wife, Lara

The first wife of Dr Liam was called Lara. She was the mother of his daughter Leanna, who was born in 2003.

Before Liam and Leanna came to Emmerdale, Lara had died due to an allergic reaction. Leanna was just six years old at the time.

    Second wife, paedophile Maya Stepney

By 2013, four years after Lara’s death, Liam married Maya Stepney. Maya and Leanna did not get along and by 2018 things were at breaking point for Liam and Maya and she began an affair with David Metcalfe.

Furious Liam ended their marriage when he found out and threw her out. This was all quite fortuitous for Liam as it turned out Maya was a groomer who targeted Jacob Gallagher, David’s son. Maya was eventually caught and sent to prison for 12 months.

Having served just five months of her sentence Maya was seen leaving prison, pregnant. The baby turned out to be David’s and she abandoned little Theo on the doorstop on Christmas Day.

Liam had a lucky escape with this one.

Bernice Blackstock and Liam Cavanagh in Emmerdale – almost made it

Liam then began an affair with Bernice Blackstock, who was dating Daz Spencer at the time. They eventually went public with their relationship, breaking Daz’s heart and Liam proposed in July 2019.

However, on the eve of their wedding Bernice received a call to say her ex, and father of her daughter Dee-Dee, had been involved in a car accident in Australia. He was in a critical condition and would need constant care if he survived.

Bernice knew she had to go straight to Oz to support Dee-Dee and look after Charlie. She was due to come home in a few weeks. However, Liam was left heartbroken when she decided not to return after he confessed he had kissed Leyla Harding.

    Third wife – Leyla Harding

After an illicit kiss with Leyla, Liam at first tried to win Bernice back, but she wasn’t having any of it. By February 2020, he and Leyla were in a relationship.

They married, despite Bernice’s return and attempts to stop it, but the honeymoon period was very much over when Leanna was murdered by Meena Jutla. Liam sunk into a depression, he at first blamed Leyla for Leanna’s death because she had given Leanna the heels she supposedly tripped over in.

Leyla then fell pregnant, but suffered a heartbreaking miscarriage – and Liam was not there for her at all. Meena later shot Leyla and it all got too much for her so she turned to drugs to cope.

When Liam found out his wife was an addict it was the end of their marriage. Though they have remained on friendly terms.

    Criminal affair – Wendy Posner

Liam’s affair with Wendy Posner has only one word that can describe it: ick. They bonded over Liam’s secret pastime as a crime fiction writer. As Wendy helped him craft his stories, literature turned to passion and the two embarked on an illicit affair.

Wendy decided to end it when she realised how much she loved Bob, but the image of Wendy and Liam going at it will forever remain with us.

Liam and Chas Dingle in Emmerdale – over before it began

Keeping it in the family, Liam next had a dalliance with Chas after helping her make cupcakes. But things took a turn when he discovered a lump in her breast during their sexual encounter.

Chas was then diagnosed with breast cancer. Despite Liam supporting her and them both clearly having feelings for each other, their romance never got off the ground. And when she saw him kissing Ella she decided to set him free and told him she wasn’t interested even though she clearly was.

After Ella’s big revelation, Chas and Liam hinted they would like to try again, but then Ella announced she was pregnant.

However, now she’s not pregnant, there’s still a flickering of something with Chas. Will they go the distance this time? Or even get off the start line?

    Child-killer Ella Forster

In 2024 Liam sort of fell into a relationship with Ella Forster. She seemed nice enough and when Chas rejected him, the dishy doc decided to throw himself head first into things with his receptionist.

He moved her in, they got close and then it was revealed she had killed a child. Liam couldn’t deal – especially given his own child had been murdered. He told Ella to leave town and never darken his door again.

But some months later she returned and was revealed to be pregnant. Liam didn’t want the baby and told her to have an abortion. But then he had a change of heart and just as he was getting excited, a scan revealed there was no baby. So Liam accused Ella of lying.

In fact, she’d had a silent miscarriage and had been pregnant. When Liam found out the truth, he apologised and they started to grow close again. They gave their relationship another shot – but his feelings for Chas just wouldn’t go away.

Liam and Chas in Emmerdale – the real deal?

It was Halloween 2024 when Liam couldn’t resist Chas any longer. They both confessed their feelings for each other and shared a kiss behind Ella’s back.

Chas refused to be the other woman and Liam agreed he would dump Ella. He took his time, but eventually managed to let her down gently. However he denied there was anyone else.

He and Chas agreed they would keep things quiet for a while to save Ella’s feelings. But she caught them out and was devastated.

Chas and Liam then went public with their relationship and everyone was happy for them. But Liam appears to be rushing things as he is planning to pop the question.

With his chequered history, is another marriage proposal really a good idea?

As Dr Liam plans to pop the question to Chas Dingle, here is her disastrous love history!

Chas Dingle in Emmerdale – as Ella recently pointed out – has got a lot of experience when it comes to love and marriage.

She’s been married, divorced, engaged, and everything in between. In fact, she’s notched up three husbands, one (jilted) fiance, a couple of steamy affairs and an ill-fated romance in her time in the village.

Now she seems happily loved up with Dr Liam, and he – it turns out – is hatching a plan to make an honest woman of her! That’s right. The much-married medic is keen to add to his own tally of spouses, and ask Chas to be his wife!

    Dramatic night out!

As it turns out the proposal very much does not go to plan. First Liam doesn’t win the raffle he’d hoped to fix in his favour so the prize of a night out in a limo goes to Kerry instead. He is forced to book another fancy car for the evening – except that means the village divides into men and women and he joins the fellas in their limo while Chas hangs out with the ladies!

And there’s worse to come as both cars end up leaving the road, with one crashing into an icy lake!

So while we wait to find out if anyone survives the dramatic frozen plunge, we thought we’d take a look back at Chas’s relationship history.

Just how many weddings has she had? Here’s the lowdown.

Chas Dingle’s first love – Gordon Livesy

Chas married young, to Gordon, the father of her son Aaron. They were divorced long before Chas arrived in Emmerdale. Though they briefly rekindled their romance, Chas was horrified when Aaron revealed his father had sexually abused him as a child. Gordon was found guilty when Aaron bravely reported his abuse, but took his own life in prison.

Carl King – jilted by Chas!

Carl King and Chas were together for aaaaages, off and on. They got engaged but Carl’s roving eye meant he was having a secret affair with Edna Birch’s granddaughter, Eve.

When Chas found out, she was – not surprisingly – furious. But instead of calling off the wedding, sneaky Ms Dingle decided to hit her cheating fiance where it hurt – in his wallet!

She pocketed the money he was giving her to pay for a lavish do, and then jilted him at the altar, adding humiliation to her revenge, too.

Later, Carl tried to rape Chas and she whacked him over the head and thought she’d killed him. She even served time for his murder. But it turned out she hadn’t struck the deadly blow – that was her other lover, Cameron Murray…

Chas Dingle and her steamy love affair with Cameron Murray in Emmerdale

Chas fell for Cameron, who was in a relationship with her niece Debbie at the time. He played the two women off against one another and that wasn’t the worst of his crimes, by a long way. Because Cameron turned out to be one the village’s most deadly killers!

He murdered Gennie Walker – Chas’s half-sister -as well as finishing off Carl King and farmhand Alex Moss. And he held the drinkers at the Woolpack hostage at gunpoint. What a guy!

Dan Spencer – Emmerdale’s quickest marriage?

Perhaps on the hunt for a good man after a string of disasters, Chas got together with Dan Spencer. They were always an odd pairing with neither of them seeming to be that excited about their relationship. But they got engaged and planned to wed on the same day as Katie Sugden and Declan Macey in 2012 – Emmerdale’s 40th anniversary!

Despite marrying Dan, Chas was being blackmailed by Carl who knew about her night with Cameron. He threatened to expose her secrets unless she ran off with him. Chas agreed, though she didn’t mean it.

Meanwhile, she desperately tried to convince Dan they should leave Emmerdale together. Dan thought she was trying to leave him – on their wedding day! While Carl saw through her lie and tried to rape her.

Chas’s new marriage barely lasted an hour. She ended up leaving poor Dan for Cameron. And we know how well that turned out.

James Barton came with a lot of baggage when he got with Chas Dingle in Emmerdale!

A romance with James Barton followed for Chas but he came with a LOT of baggage in the shape of his three grown-up sons (four if you count Adam Barton who he later discovered was his son, too). And let’s not forget his ex-wife Emma Barton who turned out to be a total disaster!

When Emma arrived in the village, she and James slept together. When Chas found out, she finished things with James – getting out just in the nick of time. Because Emma went on to hold James hostage, she pushed him off the Hotton bypass footbridge, killing him, shot son Finn and almost murdered Moira Dingle. For once, Chas got out before disaster struck!

Paddy and Chas Dingle in Emmerdale and their Christmas wedding

When Chas and Paddy rekindled their romance from several years before it seemed they were meant to be. Their relationship stayed strong even when Chas unexpectedly found she was pregnant – and when they discovered their unborn baby had a condition that meant she wasn’t going to survive for long after birth.

Chas and Paddy supported one another as she gave birth to little Grace, and the baby died in their arms just 29 minutes after she was born.

They were delighted when Chas got pregnant again and gave birth to healthy Eve, and for a while things were great.

Of course, things never stay calm for long in the Dingle family and Paddy decided to plan a surprise wedding for Chas! Despite a few hiccups along the way, the pair did tie the knot at Christmas in 2020.

But it wasn’t happy ever after for the new Mr and Mrs Dingle.

Al Chapman – disaster after disaster!

Chas began a steamy affair with horrible Al Chapman, horrifying fans! She neglected her family and even missed being with her mum Faith when she died because she was with Al. It wasn’t good!

Al was killed in the storm back in 2022, and Chas was devastated. But Paddy already knew about the affair. He kicked Chas out and their marriage was over. Not surprisingly!

Will Chas’s relationship with Liam go the distance? We’ll have to wait and see!

  • As Lydia relives giving birth to a stillborn baby, what exactly happened? And who was Toby’s father?

As Lydia relives giving birth to a stillborn baby, what exactly happened? And who was Toby’s father?

Monday’s episode of Emmerdale saw Lydia Dingle open up about the stillborn baby she gave birth to many years ago. But what exactly happened? And who was the baby’s father?

In recent Emmerdale scenes, it was revealed that while she was missing, April Windsor gave birth to a stillborn baby. Desperate to help her, Rhona and Marlon visited Lydia for advice, knowing she had once been in a similar situation.

Lydia relived the tough time, explaining how she felt ashamed. Here we take a look at what exactly happened to Lydia and baby Toby.

Baby Toby was remembered in Emmerdale

In Monday’s episode of Emmerdale, Rhona and Marlon Dingle visited Lydia to ask her advice over how to help April.

Lydia was forced to relive the past as she spoke about giving birth to a stillborn baby. Lydia said it was the worst feeling and admitted to feeling ashamed.

“When I had Toby, I was alone, I had nothing, nobody to love me, it was the darkest time in my life,” she told Rhona and Marlon.

Lydia went on to say it meant the world to her when she was finally able to scatter Toby’s ashes.

When did Lydia give birth to Toby in Emmerdale?

Lydia grew up in a children’s home, where she met Craig Reed. At the time, Lydia went by the name of Jenny Finn and she got pregnant by Craig in 1990.

Mirroring April’s story, Lydia gave birth alone in the bathroom to a stillborn baby boy. She had been too scared to tell anyone so secretly prepared for the birth by reading a book she’d found at the library. She was devastated when the baby was stillborn.

Not knowing what to do, Lydia wrapped her son in a jumper and buried him in some nearby woods. That land would eventually be the site of Hotten Academy.

She then moved away and changed her name to Lydia Hart, fearing the police would come looking for her.

    Baby body found

In 2019, the body of a baby was discovered on the grounds of Jessie Dingle’s school. With DNA evidence, it didn’t take the police long to identify the baby’s mother as Jenny Finn – a name that hadn’t previously been mentioned on Emmerdale.

However, once a picture of young Jenny was unearthed, it was clear that she and Lydia were the same person.

After the photograph was circulated in the media, Lydia handed herself into the police. She also told the full story to partner Sam Dingle, who promised to stand by her.

Later that year, she was able to scatter Toby’s ashes.

    Craig arrives in Emmerdale

In 2023, Lydia and Craig reconnected after a chance meeting at a careers fair at The Hide. They soon started spending more time together and Lydia told Craig about baby Toby, even taking him to Toby’s final resting place.

Craig befriended Sam and Sam’s stepson Samson and offered Lydia a job.

However, there was a sinister side to Craig and he developed an unhealthy obsession with Lydia. One day, Lydia tried to resign from the job, but Craig refused to accept her decision. He then pinned her down on the sofa and raped her.

Following this, Craig continued to torment Lydia by being friendly with her family and acting like he had done nothing wrong. Eventually, Lydia told her family the truth and reported the attack to the police.

How did Craig Reed die in Emmerdale?

Despite, being arrested, the case never made it to court as Craig was murdered in a soap whodunnit storyline.

All the Dingles were suspects, but all appeared to have solid alibis. Sam later admitted to Cain that he had attacked Craig and thought that perhaps he’d died later of the injuries.

However, a flashback scene showed Kim Tate, while out on her horse, coming across Craig following the attack. Craig asked Kim to help him get to hospital, but she refused.

Craig tried to drag Kim off the horse, only for the horse to kick Craig in the face, resulting in his death.

  • Jo Sugden in Emmerdale: From man-eating minx to abused wife

Jo Sugden in Emmerdale: From man-eating minx to abused wife

Jo Sugden was the manipulative man-stealer who ended up being a victim of domestic violence at the hands of her husband Andy.

Jo made some friends, and a lot of enemies in her three years in Emmerdale, but when things got tricky, the locals all stepped up for her.

Here’s everything that happened in her time in the village.

Jo Stiles (Jo Sugden) in Emmerdale

    Jo’s arrival in Emmerdale

Jo Stiles came to Emmerdale as the new receptionist at the vet’s and immediately caught the eye of some of the men in the village!

She hit it off with Danny Daggert but after they went on a date, he agreed he was too tame for a bad girl like Jo! And from there, it was clear Jo was trouble.

She invented an online girlfriend for Paddy. Jo had good intentions but things backfired when Paddy announced he was off to Portugal to meet Fireblade – the woman Jo had invented.

When Paddy came home with a woman called Toni, who claimed to be Fireblade, Jo was worried. She knew that Toni wasn’t Fireblade, but to point it out would mean admitting she’d been catfishing poor Paddy.

As it turned out, Toni was Danny’s cousin, and she and Paddy had twigged what Jo was doing and were paying her back!

Jo seduces Andy in the hay

    Jo’s affair with Andy

Jo moved into Butler’s with Andy Sugden and his former wife Katie, who had reconciled but were struggling financially. There was chemistry between Jo and Andy, and eventually they began an affair.

When Katie found out, she was furious and moved out. Jo lost her job at the vet’s after she uncovered some dodgy dealings with invoices. Hari – the vet who was doing the dodgy dealings – fired Jo to keep his own secrets.

But despite that, Jo and Andy seemed happy. They even got engaged! But their wedding plans were disrupted when Andy confessed to arson!

He fessed up to setting the fire that killed his adoptive mum Sarah Sugden. Andy was sentenced to three years in prison and instead of their dream wedding, he and Jo tied the knot behind the walls of the jail.

    Jo Sudgen all alone

While Andy was inside, Jo carried on looking after his daughter, Sarah, but they ran into trouble when Andy’s old cellmate Charlie Sellers arrived. He began harassing Jo and little Sarah, and making threats.

Terrified, Jo went to Sarah’s mum, Debbie Dingle, and asked for help. With some assistance from Chas, and local crime family the Macfarlanes, they scared Charlie off.

When Andy was paroled, he wanted Jo to adopt Sarah, but Debbie didn’t do the paperwork. Andy was fuming, but Jo let Debbie spend time with her daughter.

When Andy found out, he angrily went to get Sarah back. Jo tried to stop him, and he accidentally slapped her, giving her a black eye. Andy was horrified – or so he said – and promised never to do it again.

But things actually got much worse. Andy continued to hit Jo, even sending her to hospital.

Sweet-natured Sam Dingle realised what was happening, but when he told his family they didn’t believe him, until Sarah drew a disturbing picture!

    Spinning lies

Desperate to stop the violence, Jo lied that she was pregnant. But of course Andy realised she wasn’t telling the truth and another scuffle broke out. This time, Jo retaliated, shoving Andy. He stumbled on to a farm tool and was impaled! Jo fled the scene, but Andy’s brother Daz found him and called an ambulance.

Andy managed to spin the whole thing to make himself appear the victim.

It was Val who managed to get through to Andy’s stepmum, Diane, in the end. And once Diane realised Jo was telling the truth, Katie followed after Andy got verbally abusive with her, too.

Realising she’d never be free of Andy, Jo planned to leave. She originally wanted to take little Sarah with her, but changed her mind at the last minute, and left the tot with Debbie instead.

After she’d gone, Jo gave a statement about Andy’s violence as part of his battle with Debbie for custody of Sarah. Jo’s written evidence meant Andy withdrew his application for custody. His divorce from Jo was finalised off-screen in 2009.

    Who played Jo?

Jo Sugden was played by Roxanne Pallett. She’d appeared in Hollyoaks and A&E before she joined Emmerdale.

  • As John proves his commitment to Aaron, I think it’s time to move on from the past and let Robron go – OPINION

As John proves his commitment to Aaron, I think it’s time to move on from the past and let Robron go – OPINION

A complicated, explosive, highly toxic mess; the marriage of Robert Sugden and Aaron Dingle (or ‘Robron,’ for short) is perhaps the most talked-about Emmerdale relationship of all time. Well of course it is – the shippers won’t stop talking about Robron.

But before we go into why this writer thinks Robert and Aaron should stay in the past – first, some context.

Robert and Aaron lie next to each other, post-coitus
Robert and Aaron rolled in the hay soon after meeting (Credit: ITV/YouTube)

Robron: A history of a toxic relationship on Emmerdale

The union of the second-worst Sugden (lest we forget Andy’s wife-beating phase) and the least entertaining Dingle, the relationship of Robert and Aaron was toxic from the start, with Rob initially blackmailing ‘ron into robbing Home Farm.

Learning that Aaron was gay, Robert’s interest was piqued, and the pair hooked up. After realising that Robert was cheating on bride-to-be Chrissie, Katie snapped the pair mid-kiss and threatened to tell all. As a scuffle broke out, Robron claimed its first victim, and Katie fell to her death.

With Katie silenced, Robert and Chrissie married. However, he carried on seeing Aaron. Their toxic dance continued even as more people learned about the affair. This led to Robert almost killing and then blackmailing Paddy – subsequently holding a bound-and-gagged Aaron at gunpoint when he sought revenge. Truly, a match made in the stars.

When their affair became public knowledge, you’d think they could put everyone out of their misery and just be together. But before that could happen, somebody shot Robert. Prime suspect Aaron’s name was cleared when it was revealed that it had been Ross who dunnit – at the behest of his own adoptive brother, Andy.

    Robron II: the next level

In 2016, the pair finally stopped trying to kill each other long enough for an actual conversation. Discovering that Aaron’s dad had raped him as a child, Robert was there in his time of need. In true Robert fashion, this involved a few major crimes – paying a neighbour to lie that Gordon had raped him too.

A jury found Gordon guilty in spite of Robert’s meddling, and he eventually took his own life in prison. Always one to make it about himself, Robert then found himself in hot water with Aaron for not passing on a letter from his (now dead) dad.

They eventually reconciled and things were stable for a while, moving in together and even deciding to marry. When Aaron was sentenced to a year in prison for possession of drugs, he started pushing Robert away. Robert sought comfort in Rebecca White, with whom he fathered Seb.

The pair split when the truth came out, but couldn’t stay away from each other for long.

Robron III: Parting is such sweet sorrow as Robert leaves Emmerdale

After reuniting, Robert and Aaron decided to have a child together, and began the process of looking for a surrogate.

That hypothetical child was saved from a life under two people (one a morally bankrupt criminal, the other a tormented criminal with anger issues) who should absolutely not under any circumstances be trusted with a child’s welfare when Robert killed a man.

Robert was sentenced to fourteen years without parole. While behind bars, he learned that he was being transferred to The Isle of Wight, apparently putting an end to the saga of Robert and Aaron once and for all. If only!

    Let Robron go, Emmerdale fans

Fast-forward four years later, and fans are still talking about Robron. It’s hard to engage in any discussion about Aaron (still in the soap) without someone loudly bringing up Robert (hasn’t been in the soap since 2019) and bashing everyone and everything else.

No sooner did Aaron return to screens in 2023 than fans began demanding his other half follow. Aaron is currently at the heart of one of Emmerdale’s biggest stories, but once again, fans have found a way to make that all about Robron too.

And while I can take or leave Aaron, it does a disservice to the character – and Danny Miller – to have him constantly defined by the man in his life. Or the lack of him, as it were.

With Aaron currently holding the bag for Anthony’s murder, Robron shippers are wondering whether this might mean they reunite behind bars. As long as the cameras don’t follow them there, I wouldn’t be opposed.

    John and Aaron on Emmerdale
Aaron’s moved on… but his fans haven’t (Credit: ITV)

    Aaron’s new man

Pity poor John Sugden in all of this. While the jury’s still out on that one (serial killer? conman? weirdo?) he never really stood a chance with Robron fans. While he’s raising a few red flags of his own, one suspects that much of the hate he gets online is for not being Robert.

This writer personally finds John to be an intriguing figure – and his relationship with Aaron rather sweet. Why not give it time to breathe before declaring it a failure? Can Aaron not have some fun and stability in his miserable little life before forcing him into another agonising dilemma? Would we really rather see him behind bars with Robert than without?

Time will tell how Johron (Aarjohn?) plays out, but to pretend that he and Robert were ever the height of romance is, frankly, a bit deluded.

    Robron IV: Robron’s revenge?

What all this comes down to, ultimately, is a personal vendetta. Mine, against Robert and Aaron. I’ll be the first to admit that I never enjoyed Robert as a character (in any iteration), nor any of the actors who portrayed him.

Whatever the case, the return of Robert is inevitable – fan demand is too high, the possibilities too juicy (his ex is currently with his long-lost relative!)

The Sudgen name is too important to Emmerdale’s legacy for him to stay away forever. And, for better and worse, the name Aaron will be forever linked with Robert Sugden.

What I’m saying is, Robron is inevitable.

  • Frank Clayton is remembered in Emmerdale this week – here’s how Amy and Kerry were responsible for his death

Frank Clayton is remembered in Emmerdale this week – here’s how Amy and Kerry were responsible for his death

Frank Clayton has already been remembered in Emmerdale this week when Amy Barton awkwardly brought up the death with his daughter Tracy Robinson. Amy and her mum, Kerry were responsible for Frank’s death, but it has gone unpunished.

Later on in the week, Kerry is set to warn Eric Pollard of the dangers of arson, after she realises he’s planning to torch the shop.

Kerry manages to coax Pollard into admitting he feels like he’s failed Brenda because he hasn’t repaid the money he owes. Worried about him, Kerry says Brenda will be happy to wait, if it means Pollard doesn’t push himself to the brink.

Later though she’s shocked to see him with matches and accelerants at the shop and realises he’s planning to torch the place for the insurance money.

Eric argues that arson is a victimless crime, but Kerry desperately tries to tell him he’s wrong, implying she absolutely knows what she’s talking about.

    Which she absolutely does.

    Remember Frank Clayton in Emmerdale?

Because remember how Kerry and daughter Amy burned down the factory, killing Tracy and Vanessa’s dad, Frank Clayton?

You do? We’re glad, because until now, Kerry and Amy seem to have forgotten all about their arson attack. And even more bewilderingly, so have Vanessa and Tracy.

Anyway. In case you need a reminder, here’s what happened when Frank died.

    Amy was in trouble

Back in 2019, Amy had not been in the village long after spending years away working in Belfast.

And it turned out she was in debt to an old friend over in Northern Ireland. Amy had been fleeced by her ex boyfriend and in turn had stolen from her mate Karen to pay off her ex’s debts. When Karen showed up in the village, she threatened to go to the police unless Amy paid her back.

Kerry Wyatt planned the crime – but the arson was accidental

When Kerry found out Amy was in trouble, she hatched a plan to burgle the sweet factory and get the cash Amy needed.

She talked Amy into going along with it and together they stole charity money from the factory safe.

But it was their attempt at destroying the CCTV footage of their crime that really went wrong. They accidentally started a fire in the factory.

Frank Clayton in Emmerdale meets a fiery end

When Frank Clayton realised his daughter Tracy was inside, he raced into the flames to rescue her.

He managed to get her out safely but he went back in to get the engagement ring he’d bought for Megan Macey, emerging just as there was an explosion.

Frank was killed, and was blamed for the missing money, too. Hardly anyone in the village went to his funeral.

The truth about Kerry Wyatt and her arson revealed?

Vanessa and Tracy found out Kerry and Amy were to blame for their dad’s death. Obviously, they were furious! They went to the guilty pair and there was a confrontation.

Amy and Kerry tried to stop Tracy leaving to reveal all. But Tracy shoved Kerry and she fell and banged her head.

Bewilderingly, Amy and Kerry managed to persuade the grieving sisters that Kerry’s bump on her noggin was just as bad as Frank’s fiery death. They agreed that they’d not report Tracy on condition she and Ness stayed quiet, about Kerry Wyatt and her daughter’s arson attack.

Since then, Kerry, Tracy and Vanessa have all spent time away from the village. Their lives have moved on. The circumstances surrounding Frank’s death have never been revealed.

Amy and Kerry set to be punished for the death of Frank Clayton in Emmerdale?

It has always angered fans that Amy and Kerry got away with their crime. They now waltz about the village pretending they are goody two shoes who have never done anything wrong in their lives.

This week Amy found herself looking after Tracy’s daughter Frankie. And she even offered to babysit her any time Tracy wants. Understandably Tracy found the situation difficult, but Amy once again apologised for her role in Frank’s death. Acknowledging she knows what it’s like to feel desperate, Tracy has all-but forgiven Amy.

But with Kerry involved with Pollard’s arson plan, will her confession spark off a punishment at last? Will Amy and Kerry finally get the comeuppance they deserve for their crime? Or are the soap gods still waiting on that one?
