6 reasons Ruby is the best character in Emmerdale right now

She’s only been on Emmerdale for less than a year, but Ruby Fox-Miligan has already become one of the soap’s most iconic characters. Following husband Caleb into the village in the wake of his revenge plot against Kim Tate (whatever happened there, eh), Ruby quickly established herself as a figure to be reckoned with.

Recent weeks have seen her reckon with the arrival of her estranged daughter and father. While she was keen to make up with daughter Steph, seeing Anthony again has brought old traumas bubbling to the fore.

As a special episode tonight reveals exactly what evil Anthony committed all those years ago, we argue our case for Ruby being Emmerdale’s best character.

Ruby stares Kim Tate down in Emmerdale spoilers

    1. Beth Cordingly’s performance as Ruby in Emmerdale

Former The Bill and Heartbeat actor Beth Cordingly, 48, has been a powerhouse since joining the soap. Between the explosive outbursts and her quiet heartbreak at years of betrayal and rejection, the star has taken it all in her stride. Love or hate Ruby (and there’s plenty in both camp), there’s no arguing that Beth Cordingly isn’t giving it her all.

“Beth Cordingly (Ruby) is just an incredible actress & the best thing to happen to Emmerdale. She’s awesome!” wrote one viewer on X this week.

    2. Her backstory

As they did with Caleb, the writers were slow to reveal Ruby’s history prior to arriving in the village. After reuniting with Caleb and after the exit of son Nicky, Ruby gradually began to open up about her family.

First there was mum Helen, who died before Ruby could see her one last time. Then, we learned about the existence of daughter Steph. But where was Steph? This became clear months later, as Steph arrived in town… with granddad Anthony in tow.

Ruby’s backstory keeps revealing layers to the character; each fresh revelation explaining her firebrand behaviour a little bit more.

“I have been desperate for AGES to find out more about Ruby and her backstory (and Caleb keeps RUINING it). I am becoming increasingly emotionally attached to this woman by the day,” wrote one fan.

“Enjoyable character. Rare for modern Emmerdale – I just want to know more of their past, there clearly is a lot there,” another agreed.

    3. Drama always follows Ruby on Emmerdale

Where there is Ruby, drama will be sure to follow. This was quickly established as she introduced herself to the in-laws by crashing Belle and Tom’s wedding party, exposing Caleb’s affair with Tracy and causing quite the circus.

She followed this up with a scuffle in the Woolpack, where she gave Cain a knee to the crown jewels and, later, elbowed Chas in the breast… only weeks after she’d undergone surgery for breast cancer.

Ruby may have made nice with the Dingles since, but chaos is never far away where Ruby is concerned.

    4. Her sharp tongue

Not only is Ruby a physically formidable figure (just ask Cain), she also possesses the sharpest tongue in the Dales. This was in full show earlier this week as dad Anthony confronted her over Caleb’s affair with Tracy.

When he pressed her over how she could stand for such a philanderer, she countered by telling him that cheating was a two way street. “You’re assuming it’s another man, then,” Ruby countered, when Anthony wondered who the other man is.

A smart comeback is never far away, even in the face of a man she’s obviously traumatised by.

    5. Her relationship with Caleb

No, hear us out. They may be one of the soap’s most toxic couples, but there’s no denying that their relationship is also one of its most interesting. Between his cheating (and hers), and her revenge plans (and his), plus their general incapability of being honest… they kind of deserve each other.

“We’ve only watched Ruby/Caleb onscreen for just under a year, yet their relationship is more complex than many couples we’ve followed for a decade,” wrote one fan.

“She’s a fantastic actor but a repugnant character, her and Caleb are very well suited,” said another.

    6. Her relationships with the other characters

Ruby made no shortage of enemies in the village upon her arrival, quickly upsetting each and every one of the Dingles. Months later, she was the recipient of one of Moira’s signature gifts from Glasgow, after Moira became convinced she’d been having an affair with Cain (yeah, about that…)

It’s to her credit, then, that she’s managed to win over all the haters; befriending Chas, bedding Cain and even making up with Moira. How that will all come crumbling down once the affair is exposed remains to be seen, but her interactions with the rest of the cast are nothing short of fabulous.

  • ‘Kim Tate needs her own family’ beg Emmerdale fans as they are desperate for someone to ‘truly have her back’

‘Kim Tate needs her own family’ beg Emmerdale fans as they are desperate for someone to ‘truly have her back’

Emmerdale fans have issued a plea to bosses to bring in the family of Kim Tate.

The soap icon, played by Claire King, made her first appearance on the soap in 1989 – only to leave 10 years later. Kim then made her triumphant return to Emmerdale in 2018 and has reclaimed her rightful place as a Dales legend.

But fans have recently been left wondering about her blood family, and have demanded bosses to bring them in as “everyone treats her like dirt”.

Emmerdale Kim Tate and her family

Very little is known about Kim, born Kim Barker, and her early background and upbringing. Her father was a telephone engineer and her mother was a hairdresser. Kim also had a younger sister.

In 1984, aged 25 Kim married into the iconic Tate clan, tying the knot to the abusive Frank. Kim went on to have a son, Jamie with him.

Kim survived Frank’s abuse and his attempt to kill her, and had him framed for her supposed murder. He ended up dying of a heart attack – brought on by Kim’s iconic return to the village after being presumed dead…

Meanwhile, Kim’s son Jamie rocked up the Dales in 2019, hell bent on bringing Kim down. He was last seen in 2021, and is living with Kim’s granddaughter Millie.

Although not blood-related, Kim is also close to Gabby Thomas, who used to date Jamie.

And in 2022, Kim married her fourth husband, Will Taylor, taking on the role of stepmum and step-grandmother to his daughter Dawn, and her kids. But as we know, things are very hit-and-miss with Kim and Will at the moment…

Emmerdale fans beg bosses to bring in Kim’s family

However, fans can’t help but think it’s about time the soap brought in some of Kim Tate’s family… (and we totally agree!)

On a Reddit thread, one person penned: “Kim literally has no one who will truly look out for her, I thought Gabby could play that role but I think it’s time they introduced Kim’s actual family and not another Tate out for revenge or family members out to get her.

“It would also mean she stopped pandering to ungrateful Dawn. I’m not clued up on Kim’s family tree but a loyal long lost sister who had kids would be nice, or just anybody who would have her back.”

‘Everyone just treats her like dirt’

Other Emmerdale fans agreed too. A second person pointed out how Kim’s sister was mentioned “a handful of times” on the soap in the ’90s.

The fan explained: “I think they were close even if she wasn’t on screen. I truly believe she could be the character who had her back. I do agree she needs someone because everyone just treats her like dirt and there’s no need to really.”

A third chimed in and mused: “I agree!! Bringing in her own family would be great to see!! Kim’s been treated like garbage by Will and his ungrateful daughter. I’d like to see a sister with her own teenage or young adult children move into Home Farm so misery guts Dawn can’t move back in! Also Will needs to go too!”

  • Ross defended by Emmerdale fans as Moses turns against him: ‘Ross actually wasn’t wrong this time’

Ross defended by Emmerdale fans as Moses turns against him: ‘Ross actually wasn’t wrong this time’

Emmerdale fans have defended Ross Barton following the latest development with son Moses.

Since Ross returned to the soap at the end of October, he has been trying to be a good father to Moses – the son he shares with Charity Dingle.

Latest events saw Moses brand Ross a bully. However, fans are feeling sorry for Ross this time and don’t believe he is to blame.

Ross and Moses’ relationship in Emmerdale

Ross retuned to Emmerdale earlier this year after six years away in typical Ross fashion – by taking part in an illegal boxing match.

However, when Charity made it clear that if he wanted a relationship with Moses he’d have to give the fighting up, Ross did the right thing and tried to cancel his next fight.

Another obstacle to Ross forming a relationship with Moses comes in the shape of Charity’s partner Mack, who has been a father figure to Moses.

Ross and Mack have bickered constantly, with Moses stuck in the middle. This went one step further last week when Ross gave Mack a beating. There was a reason for it, though – Mack’s decision to steal £10k from Jade had nearly got young April killed because Jade kidnapped April as leverage until she got her money back.

However, the attack was witnessed by Moses, leaving Ross as the bad guy. Charity told Ross he’d never see his son again, while Moses told his dad to go away and described him as a bully.

    Fans side with Ross

Taking to X, viewers expressed their anger at the situation and defended Ross against Mack. One fan said: “Mackenzie really starting to grind on me like what is his problem with Ross he need to get a life.”

“Why is Ross getting the blame and Mackenzie blameless and getting away scot free?” asked another viewer. A third fan echoed that thought and said: “Why is Charity not bloody angry with him [Mack] for putting her and Moses at risk and April in danger! I know Ross isn’t innocent but it’s ridiculous how Mack gets away with no blame!”

A fourth viewer said: “All down to Mack… but let’s blame Ross… Can’t even solely blame Ross for the fighting, considering Billy was involved. Then Mack steals the money & even when Ross explains how dangerous Jade is, he still doesn’t do a thing. Now, I am NOT a fan of Ross, but come on!”

Another fan added: “It’s not Ross’ fault April got into a car with a stranger, Marlon. Mack is such an ass. He caused this not Ross. He’s a jealous, petty man who had that decking coming.”

Other fans even went as far as to feel sorry for Ross, with one writing: “Is it weird I feel sorry for Ross?” and another adding: “Feel sorry for Ross – for once he hasn’t done anything wrong.”

  • Cain Dingle’s guilty conscience leaves Emmerdale fans tired: ‘Grow up Cain’

Cain Dingle’s guilty conscience leaves Emmerdale fans tired: ‘Grow up Cain’

Last month in Emmerdale, Cain Dingle cheated on wife Moira with Ruby Fox-Miligan, but fans are tiring of his guilty conscience.

Cain has been avoiding spending time with Moira as he feels guilty over what occurred. Instead, he has been finding various jobs that need doing in order to not spend time alone with his wife.

But fans have had enough and are calling for Cain to “grow up”.

    Cain and Ruby kiss

Cain cheats on Moira with Ruby

Last month, Emmerdale aired a special episode which saw Moira interact with her dead daughter Holly Barton while she underwent brain surgery.

The same episode saw Cain’s story told in reverse chronological order. We saw him with bloodied hands while drinking whiskey. As the clock went back further, viewers were shocked when Cain and his sister-in-law Ruby were shown putting their clothes back on.

As the clock went back again, it was revealed that the pair of them had argued, before that blew over into passion.

While both parties are eager to pretend the fling never happened, it’s Cain who is struggling with the guilt the most. He has been making excuses to not see Moira – whether that be picking up the kids or farm duties.

The latest excuse saw Cain pretend he had to pick a car up in Dudley. He then lied that he was stuck there all night.

When will Moira discover the truth about Cain? (Credit: ITV)

Emmerdale fans sick of Cain and his guilt

The storyline hasn’t proved popular with fans, who hate that Cain cheated. They are also sick of him feeling sorry for himself.

“Cain’s guilty conscience gets worse,” wrote one fan on X, while another added: “Oh ffs Cain grow the hell up and quit with the poor me guilt. If [you] tell Moira what you did it’s not gonna help her, it’s gonna bloody ruin her.”

“Every cute moment of Cain and Moira makes me want to fire every writer in the room because why did you make him cheat,” a third viewer wrote. Another added: “The guilt is written all over Cain.”

With Cain’s guilt so obvious, it’s surely only a matter of time before Moira learns about Ruby. “The guilt really is getting to Cain now, I don’t think it will be much longer before Moira finds out the truth,” agreed a fan. Another quipped: “I know Moira has a brain injury, but even that wouldn’t stop her from seeing Cain’s guilt.”

  • Who was Donna Windsor? From romance with Ross Barton to tragic death

Who was Donna Windsor? From romance with Ross Barton to tragic death

Emmerdale character Donna Windsor sent fans into tears after her dramatic death back in 2014, leaving little April without a mum.

The police officer was previously romantically involved with Ross Barton before her death. With his return to the Dales, all eyes are turning back to his exes.

Including the rollercoaster relationship between Donna and Ross. Here’s everything you need to know about Donna.

    Emmerdale: Donna Windsor backstory

Donna was born on the 31st December 1985 in East London and is daughter to Vic and Viv Windsor.

The family stayed in South London for a while, where Donna suffered something that would later seriously harm her.

Back in 1992, Vic was redecorating their flat and the ceiling collapsed, covering Donna in dust. She breathed in a lot of the dust but was not severely hurt, and unbeknown to her, had asbestos.

22 years later, Donna developed an asbestos-related cancer which took her life.

In 1993, the family left for Beckindale, Yorkshire, after having enough of London.

Emmerdale: Donna’s first stint in the Dales

You can take the girl out of the city, but not the city out of the girl. When the Windsors arrived to the Dales, they brought some of their behaviours with them.

Several fast drives and leaving gates open, but they eventually adapted.

Donna’s first big disaster was when she was in Kim’s Stables at the Home Farm when wreckage from a plane hit the stables after a plane crashed in the village.

Luckily, the Windsors survived the crash, but another disaster quickly arrived. The following year, she was on a tractor with Michael Feldmann when it was toppled over. Donna was injured, but made it through.

A legal battle ensued as Viv wanted to sue John Sugden as the incident happened under his leadership.

However, their attention turned elsewhere as 2 years later in January 1996, 10 year old Donna was accidentally shot by her half-brother, Scott Windsor.

    Donna’s relationships

In 2003, Donna started dating Robert Sugden whom she had previously bullied whilst at school. He dumped her for another woman, but they got back together eventually.

Things turned sour when Donna contracted chlamydia from him. The pair shared a turbulent relationships, but eventually ended after Robert had an affair.

She moved onto widower Marlon Dingle. Having finally got over the death of his wife Tricia, Marlon was ready to date again and found himself falling in love with Donna. He even proposed to her after a year.

Meanwhile, Donna struck up a close friendship with Max King, whom she enjoyed flirting with. When Max was killed in a car crash, caused by Donna’s ex-boyfriend Robert, Donna was devastated and Marlon tried to help her through her grief.

They got married eventually, even though Donna was not sure. She even confessed her love for Max, but they went through with it anyway.

Donna and Marlon were left looking after Marlon’s cousin Lillith‘s four children Luke, Matthew, Mark and Jon, following her arrest for armed robbery.

    Emmerdale: Donna and Ross

Crime was never far from Donna, after she and Ross were involved in a car chase after Viv was framed for fraud. However, there Ross and Donna developed feelings for each other, with Donna becoming Ross’ ‘one true love.’

She started an affair with him behind Marlon’s back. They split and got back together, on the promise she would never talk to Ross again. However, soon after Marlon cheated on her with Chas.

He told Donna that he did not love her as much as he loved Tricia and with that admission Donna left the village in a taxi for the train station. She did not come back for years.

After a few years, Donna came back with her four-year-old daughter April, after breaking up with her partner.

    Donna’s death

Marlon gave an emotional confession admitting that he didn’t love his daughter. Marlon eventually realised that he needed to bond with April, and as Donna and April were leaving Emmerdale, Marlon stood in front of her car, causing Donna to hit her head on the windscreen.

At the hospital, she revealed she had terminal cancer, but didn’t want her family to know.

She started acting out when she realised she didn’t have long left to live, and even got involved in crime. She restarted her affair with Ross.

However, in a final showdown with criminal Gary North, she told Ross that she loved him and then she took what she saw as the only way out of this situation and pulled Gary over the top of the car park.

The fall killed both of them, and remains one of Emmerdale’s biggest stunts to date.

  • Chloe Harris and baby Reuben: Where they went and why Mack doesn’t see his son

Chloe Harris and baby Reuben: Where they went and why Mack doesn’t see his son

Mack is sad about his estranged son Reuben in tonight’s episode of Emmerdale and mentions Reuben’s mum, Chloe Harris too.

The little lad – who is now about 18 months old – got two mentions in today’s ep (Tuesday December 3), with Mack sharing his despair at not having contact with his son.

So as it’s almost a year since Reuben and his mum Chloe left the village, we thought it was time to recap everything that happened in their time in the Dales and where they’ve gone.

Emmerdale's Mack is holding Reuben, speaking to Chloe

    Chloe’s arrival

Everything about Chloe’s arrival in Emmerdale was a little bit odd!

She turned up first of all because her late sister, Gemma, was Sarah Sugden‘s heart donor. She and Sarah struck up a friendship, and it became clear that Chloe had a strange home life. She lived in a big house, but was all alone and despite having lots of cash, was lonely and sad.

In a strange twist, as viewers got to know Chloe better, it was revealed that her housekeeper was Kerry Wyatt! She was taking care of Chloe while her dad Damon was in prison. Not only that, but Damon had a team of creepy henchmen who were watching Chloe’s every move.

    Escape to Emmerdale

Eventually Chloe managed to flee her weird prison and moved to Emmerdale to live with Kerry and her daughter Amy. She struck up a romance with Noah Dingle, and the pair were quite cute for a minute, before Noah got – well – a bit dark.

When Chloe lost interest in Noah and turned her attention to older man Nate Robinson, Noah wasn’t happy. He started being more than a little sinister, snooping through Chloe’s things – including her underwear – and taking hundreds of photos of her. He even held her hostage!

Not surprisingly, Chloe was not happy about this turn of events and Noah ended up going to prison for three months.

Another twist for Chloe Harris in Emmerdale

In 2022, Mack had a one-night stand with a mystery person while he was on a break from then girlfriend Charity after she had a miscarriage. What a gem he is, eh?

Fans were convinced it could have been Aaron Dingle but disappointingly his secret lover turned out to be Chloe.

And when Chloe inevitably turned out to be pregnant, things got even messier.

Chloe didn’t want Mackenzie to know at first, and planned to leave. Kerry was desperate for her to stay and revealed that she was actually Chloe’s real mum. Whaaaaat?!

    Chloe and Mack

    Baby blues

Chloe eventually told Mack the news but he’d reconciled with Charity and didn’t want to know. Things got tricky, though, when Charity took Chloe under her wing and even invited her to live with them for a while.

There was a lot of to-ing and fro-ing between Mack and Chloe as he struggled to secretly support her through her pregnancy and during Reuben’s birth.

But of course, Charity eventually found out. She was FUMING. She and Mack broke up and he tried to make a go of it with Chloe.

    Clifftop plunge for Chloe Harris

But the dream of playing happy families fell apart when Mack cheated on Chloe with Charity. Chloe worked it all out and plotted to leave, but actually ended up in the car with Mack and Charity too. And in dramatic scenes, the car plunged off the road. As it teetered on the edge of a cliff, Mack chose to save Charity, leaving Chloe to die when the car crashed down.

Except she didn’t die. In fact, she was fine! But out for revenge.

    Harry Harris

Criminal Harry had been seen on screen before, getting close to Chas Dingle in order to take revenge on her brother Caleb. But it turned out he was actually Chloe’s dad, Damon! Who was also called Harry!

Harry was sinister and abusive, and when he found out about the car accident he decided to take revenge on Mackenzie. Except Harry went a bit too far and held Mack hostage. When Chloe, and then Charity worked it out, they tried to rescue him. A struggle happened and Charity accidentally shot and killed Harry!

Chloe saw a chance to make this work to her advantage and said she’d cover up Charity’s crime and back up her story, if Mack let her and baby Reuben go without a fight.

Mack agreed, though he was heartbroken. He said a tearful goodbye to his son, and off they went, never to be seen again.

Chloe has kept in touch with her sister Amy and mum Kerry. In today’s episode, Amy reported that both Chloe and Reuben were “thriving”.

Who played Chloe Harris in Emmerdale?

Chloe was played by television newcomer Jessie Elland.

Talented Jessie is also a writer and her debut novel The Ladie Upstairs – described as a feminist horror story – will be published next year.

As Tom’s comeuppance beckons, Jimmy and Amelia have some serious grovelling to do

Following Tom King’s arrest, Emmerdale fans have predicted Amelia and Jimmy will be grovelling to be granted forgiveness from Belle and their loved ones.

Justice was finally served as Tom was charged for his abuse of Belle last night. Jimmy, who had also taken Tom’s side previously, witnessed him treating Amelia badly. This finally allowed them both to see the truth.

Here’s all you need to know about Tom’s arrest in Emmerdale.

    Emmerdale: Tom finally arrested

Tom was finally arrested in Emmerdale and Amelia finally saw his true colours in recent episodes. DS Foy arrived in the Dales to take Tom in for questioning and witnessed him forcefully marching Amelia out of the house.

Jimmy was also a witness, finally allowing him to realise that Belle was telling the truth about her husband. The charges against Tom were also read out in the pub by DS Foy, allowing everyone, including Amelia, to hear the truth.

Although we’ve not seen the last of Tom, as there’s no doubt he has further plans, it looks like justice is finally being served after months of Belle waiting.

Grovelling time for Jimmy and Amelia

Jimmy witnessed Tom dragging Amelia out of the house, before later hearing DS Foy reel off the charges against Tom at the station. Amelia and Belle heard the news in the pub. Now, Emmerdale fans have shared their relief at Amelia and Jimmy having finally seen Tom’s true colours, but many are wondering what the pair’s next steps will be.

“Watching Jimmy’s face finally see Tom for the monster that he is,” one fan wrote on social media. A second added: “Tom dragging Amelia out of the house…and Jimmy witnesses it! Finally removed your rose-tinted glasses now, Jimmy. And Amelia come to think of it?!”

Another Emmerdale fan predicted Amelia and Jimmy will be apologising to those around them, writing: “Time for Jimmy and Amelia to GROVEL and beg Belle for forgiveness,” and another added: “Amelia is as stupid as Jimmy.”

Tom is as evil as his dad – a complete list of Carl King’s heinous crimes

It was almost like Carl King returned to Emmerdale over the last few days as his son, Tom King, and his unhinged behaviour continue to mirror that of his evil father.

In fact, the scales have even fallen from devoted Uncle Jimmy’s eyes after Tom’s arrest. Jimmy calls him a ‘chip off the old block’ tonight and he’s sure got a point.

So it’s a case of like father, like son, but which King is more evil? Let’s take a look at the complete list of Carl King‘s terrible crimes.

Carl King was in Emmerdale for eight years between 2004-2012. He arrived in the village to spy for his family business King & Sons, snooping on Tate Haulage.

He set his sights on Louise Appleton, asking her out on a date, but when his wife Coleen turned up, things got complicated. That put paid to that romance.

And then things turned dark. It was not long after his arrival that he caused the death of local postman Paul Marsden. The pair were fixing a roof together and Paul started teasing Carl over his fear of heights. As they continued to mess around, Paul lost his footing and fell. Carl and his brothers covered up the death by moving the body so it looked like he had had an accident on his own roof, completely on his own.

    Cheating Carl

Consumed by guilt, Carl ended up revealing what had happened to Chas Dingle. The pair started a relationship, but Carl’s wandering eye soon struck and he had a one-night stand with Chloe Atkinson. Chloe then became determined to split the couple up. She wrote poison-pen letters and Chas had soon had enough, ending things.

Chloe moved in for the kill and Carl obliged, but soon got bored and wanted Chas back. She, however, left to join the army!

So he turned his attentions to her cousin, Delilah Dingle. Although they grew close and did sleep together, his heart lay with Chas and he eventually wooed her back.

They made a real go of it this time, but that was much to the disapproval of his dad, Tom King Snr. And that led to…

Killer Carl King’s second victim in Emmerdale

The King family were at war as Matthew and Sadie’s rival company took on King & Sons. Chas was passing information on the Kings to Jamie Hope, whose sister Dawn Woods had died thanks to the Kings’ battle. Furious Tom insisted Chas wasn’t good enough for Carl and then bribed her to end things.

But Chas fought back and told Carl everything on Tom’s wedding day to Rosemary Sinclair. That same day, which also happened to be Christmas Day, Tom was murdered when he was hit over the head and pushed from his bedroom window. It was later revealed Carl had a confrontation with his father about Chas and hit him when Tom called Chas nasty names. Carl then pushed Tom away and he fell out of the window.

In the midst of all this, Carl started dating DCI Grace Barraclough, who was investigating Tom’s murder! So that soon got complicated and Carl decided to confess, telling Grace everything. She took him to the police station, but was hit by a lorry as she was walking across the road. Carl then got away with murder – and things ended with Grace, pretty badly!

    Cheating Carl strikes again!

Carl eventually moved on and married Lexi King although he only married her because she found out the truth about Tom’s murder. Things soon turned sour and Lexi left him. Carl got back with Chas but that wandering eye fell on Eve Jenson, with whom he started an affair.

Chas found out about the affair and decided to expose Carl on her and Carl’s wedding day. She convinced him they were going to get wed (on Christmas Day again!), but secretly squirrelled all his money away and jilted him at the altar.

    The worst crime yet

Chas began an affair with Cameron Murray who was engaged to her niece Debbie Dingle. Chas was also engaged to Dan Spencer. Carl found out about her affair and tried to blackmail her.

Chas pretended that she was interested in Carl again but really she was just trying to make him take back his threats.

It all came to a head on Emmerdale’s 40th anniversary in 2012. Carl turned really nasty and blackmailed Chas for the £30k she took from him. However the hate turned to obsession as Carl decided he’d stop at nothing to get Chas back.

Chas tried to keep him sweet by pretending she would run away with him, but when he realised she had no intention doing so, Carl flipped. He revealed he had killed his father for her. Disgusted Chas tried to flee, but Carl grabbed her and forced himself on her, trying to rape her.

Chas hit Carl on the head with a brick in self-defence. Believing she had killed him, she left him lying there. Chas even stood trial for his murder, but she was acquitted.

Meanwhile, what actually happened was Cameron went back and delivered the final blow that killed Carl who screamed: “I’m indestructible” as Cameron smacked him over the head and Carl fell to the ground, dead.

Has Emmerdale finally redeemed Chas? Let’s take a look at the evidence

In Emmerdale, Chas was viewed as ‘irredeemable’ following her affair with Al Chapman, but she’s tried to put the past behind her…

Following a difficult battle with cancer, Chas has now found happiness in the arms of swoony Doctor Liam Cavanagh.

But, has Chas finally been redeemed? Or, is she still a long way off?

Chas’ reputation ruined by Al affair

In 2022, an affair started up in the Dales that will unfortunately forever be embedded into our minds.

Chas cheated on poor, lovely Paddy for businessman Al Chapman (and she was about the only person in the village who actually liked him other than Kerry…)

Despite having an affair with Chas, Al still went ahead and got engaged to Kerry although it would’ve been very awkward to reject such a fabulous (and very public) proposal. It involved Kerry presenting Al with a rap.

We weren’t a huge fan of Al to begin with but Chas was somewhat likeable until she betrayed Paddy like she did. And, let’s not get us started on Faith.

When Chas’ mum Faith was dying of cancer, Chas missed her final moments because she was in bed with her secret lover. How gross.

Everything came to an abrupt end though when Al was dramatically killed by little Kyle during a gun showdown. What goes around, comes around.

    Chas’ cancer journey

After her affair with Al, Chas lost a lot of respect from fellow villagers and soap viewers alike. It looked as though her selfish ways were never going to be redeemed.

However, some sympathy for the character was given as she was diagnosed with cancer at the start of this year.

After a moment of passion with Dr Liam, he found a bump in Chas’ breast. She then found out that she had triple-negative breast cancer.

After a double mastectomy, Chas’ strength and resilience was to be admired. But, was this enough to redeem her?

Chas and Liam’s romance on Emmerdale

On screen at the moment, Chas is pretty loved up with Liam after they both confessed their love for each other this week.

She seems to be happy, and the rest of the village has come a long way since the Chas and Al affair.

However, even though Chas and Liam seem like a good pairing, let’s not forget that they are both sneaking about to hide the truth from heartbroken Ella. Just another relationship Chas has been in that’s going to end up hurting someone then. Nothing new there.

  • Pearl Ladderbanks: Money worries, gambling habit and heartbreak!

Pearl Ladderbanks: Money worries, gambling habit and heartbreak!

Pearl Ladderbanks was one of Emmerdale fans’ favourite characters. She was good-hearted and funny, but she somehow always found herself making bad choices and getting into trouble.

    Pearl’s arrival in the village

Snooty Edna Birch declared Pearl was a ‘trollop’ almost as soon as she arrived in the village! But flamboyant and fun, Ms Ladderbanks was soon making friends. She hit it off with Len Reynolds when she first came to Emmerdale, and the pair quickly started a romance. He proposed and she accepted and they moved in together. But Pearl was hiding a big secret!

    Pearl’s secret

It turned out that Pearl’s son Frank was not a financial adviser, as she’d told everyone in the village. In fact, he was serving time for rape. Len was horrified when he found out, but quickly realised Pearl had been through enough when it came to Frank and stood by her.

When he was released, Frank came to stay with Pearl and Len. But his arrival was written about in the Hotten Courier and the villagers all turned against poor Pearl. Only Ashley and Edna stood by her and Len. Scott Windsor and Syd Woolfe beat Frank up after a misunderstanding involving Scott’s sister Donna, and Frank decided to move away and start a new life elsewhere.

Pearl and Len were upset about how they’d been treated so they decided to move away too, but their friends in the village rallied round and convinced them to stay.

    Money troubles

Pearl’s grandson Owen came to visit from Hong Kong. But Pearl was put in an awkward position when he asked to see where his dad was buried. It turned out his mum had lied and said his dad was dead, rather than admitting the truth about him being in prison.

Pearl told Owen the truth, and was surprised when he said he already knew! He just wanted someone to be honest with him.

The pair became close and Pearl began saving up to visit Owen in Hong Kong. But she soon made some bad decisions when she invested in a get-rich-quick scheme and persuaded some of her friends to invest, too.

But the scheme was a scam and Pearl lost all her cash and her friends’ money too. Desperate to make amends, she took a loan from Eric.

Len wasn’t impressed when he found out, but he repaid the loan, only for Pearl to be hit with an early-repayment penalty Eric had sneaked into her contract.

She was so guilt-ridden with the mess she’d made that she left the village, leaving her engagement ring and a note for Len.

Return to the village for Pearl Ladderbanks

Pearl was working in a pub, using a false name, when she bumped into Daz Eden, who’d fled from his mum and her boyfriend. They went back to Emmerdale together and to Pearl’s relief, she was welcomed back with open arms. She even reconciled with Len.

    More blackmail

Pearl started working for the Kings, and she was a key witness when Tom was murdered. She knew Jimmy had lied about being with Kelly on the night, because she’d seen Kelly alone. Jimmy tried to blackmail Pearl into keeping quiet but she went to the police.

    Len’s death

When Len died, Pearl was devastated. The whole village turned out to say goodbye. As Pearl tried to move on, she thought Eric was being an unlikely friend to her, but it turned out he was just trying to swindle her out of her home.

    More money woes

By 2015 Pearl was working at the vet’s but she discovered she’d been underpaying her gas bill and was deep in debt. She turned to gambling to try to make more wonga and was soon in even worse trouble.

She started stealing from the vet’s and even pretended to be suffering from memory troubles in order to get away with it. But when Vanessa found a list of IOUs she’d been keeping, the game was up. She was sacked and she sold her house to Eric to pay off her debts.

Once more she planned to leave the village but once more, she was convinced to stay.

Pearl left the village in 2020, moving to a static caravan in Demdyke and then to Hong Long to be with Owen.

    Who played Pearl Ladderbanks?

Pearl was played by actress Meg Johnson. She had a long and glittering career in showbiz from making her debut on the stage aged just six when she was evacuated to Bolton during the war.

Meg played Eunice Gee in Coronation Street in the 1980s and 90s, and worked regularly with Victoria Wood. She starred in productions of Chicago, Gypsy and Follies, and played Brigid McKenna in Broookside from 2000-2003.

In 2003 she landed the role of Pearl in Emmerdale and stayed in the village until 2020.
