The 20 longest-serving Emmerdale characters of all time – Eric Pollard, Kim Tate, Charity Dingle and more!

Emmerdale has been on air for an incredible 52 years and the village has been home to thousands of characters, but who are the longest-serving? While there are no original characters still in the show, there are others who have on screen for a significant number of years.

Eric Pollard comes out on top with 38 years of service, but which locals, past and present, have clocked up decades in the Dales?

Here’s a rundown of the 20 longest-serving Emmerdale characters of all time. Is your favourite on there?

Longest-serving Emmerdale characters: 1. Eric Pollard

The award for the longest-serving character in Emmerdale history goes to the one and only Eric Pollard. It’s been 38 – yes, 38 – years since the former antiques dealer stepped foot in the famous village. He was only meant to stay for 12 episodes, but now has over 3300 under his belt.

Chris Chittell, who is also Emmerdale’s longest-serving actor, quickly won fans over with his portrayal of immoral Eric. He made his first appearance on September 30, 1986 and soon became a permanent fixture.

Pollard has certainly packed a lot into his nearly four decades in the Dales. He’s been married five times, committed fraud, bigamy and discovered he had a son he never knew existed.

Eric may be a pensioner living with Parkinson’s every day, but don’t be fooled – there’s still life in the sly old fox!

    2. Annie Sugden

Sugden matriarch Annie was the beating heart of the village, particularly in the early days of Emmerdale.

Annie was introduced back in the first episode, which aired on October 16, 1972. She was portrayed by actress Sheila Mercier, and remains the longest-serving female character in the soap’s 52-year history.

The Sugdens were Emmerdale’s central family and headed up by Annie, who was a real heroine. She had practically raised her three children – Jack, Peggy and Joe – singlehandedly, while managing to run a busy farm.

Annie was also a true survivor, and overcame financial troubles, addiction battles, and even nearly being killed in the 1993 plane crash. She left the village in July 1994 to start a new life in sunny Spain.

She popped back a few times over the years, making her last appearance on February 2009, in what was her 1595th episode. Annie died off screen in August 2020, aged 100.

    3. Jack Sugden

Another member of the OG Emmerdale gang, Jack Sugden became one of the show’s most important characters.

He was originally played by actor Andrew Burt on and off between 1972 and 1976. In 1980, Jack made a permanent return to the village, and the role was taken over by Clive Hornby.

For the next 28 years, Jack was a staple of village life. An experienced and hard-working farmer, he was a respected pillar of the community. He lost his first two wives in tragic circumstances, but found happiness with Woolpack landlady, Diane Blackstock.

The biggest headache in Jack’s life were his children – particularly his sons Robert and Andy, who formed a long-running rivalry.

Following Clive Hornby’s sad death in July 2008 the decision was made to kill Jack’s character off. He died the following February while visiting his mum, Annie in Spain. Jack’s body was returned to his beloved village and laid to rest in the local cemetery.

In total, Jack was in Emmerdale for 35 years and four months.

    4. Kim Tate

Coming in at fourth place for years in service, is the indomitable lady of the manor, Kim Tate.

As the glamorous gold-digging wife of millionaire Frank, Kim made her debut on December 12, 1989. The Tates arrival in the village marked the dawn of a new ‘sexier’ era for the soap. And Kim had sex appeal galore!

Played by the brilliant Claire King, Kim is best known for her steamy love affairs, criminal capers and the moment she stood and watched Frank die and did nothing. She’s entertained millions for over 1500 episodes.

Kim was away from the Dales between 1999 and 2018, but has now been back on the throne of Home Farm for six years. And long may she reign!

Robert looks sombre as he appears in court to be sentenced

Longest-serving Emmerdale characters: 5. Robert Sugden

The time between Robert Sugden’s first and last appearances is an impressive 33 years and seven months.

The son of the late Jack and Pat Sugden, Robert made his first appearance on the day of his birth – April 22, 1986. Since then, the character has been played by four different actors, most recently Ryan Hawley.

Robert’s one of Emmerdale’s most popular, yet flawed, figures. His standout storylines include the love triangle between him, Katie Addyman and his adoptive brother, Andy. And of course, his iconic affair with Aaron Dingle. Robron forever!

The character’s last episode on-screen was November 1, 2019, when he was sentenced to 14 years in prison for manslaughter. Here’s hoping they let him out for good behaviour so the fans can get the comeback they’re craving.

    Alan Turner in Emmerdale

    6. Alan Turner

Many fans will remember Alan Turner as the iconic and kind-hearted landlord of The Woolpack. But he wasn’t always a cuddly grandfather figure.

When Alan arrived on March 18, 1982 he was a ruthless and pompous businessman who made his fair share of enemies. But time mellowed him and and Alan ended up becoming a highly respected local and friend to many.

Actor Richard Thorp, who was previously known for his roles in British films such as The Dambusters and The Barrets of Wimpole Street, played Alan for 2696 episodes until his death in June 2013. The character was written out of the show, and died off-screen in October 2013, with the village mourning his passing.

    7. Victoria Sugden

This year marked Victoria Sugden’s 30th on Emmerdale – and what a journey it’s been!

Born to Jack and Sarah Sugden on March 31, 1994, Vic has lived in the village her entire life. She was originally played by Jessica Heywood, then Hannah Midgley, before Isabel Hodgins took over the part in 2006.

Victoria has had an eventful life so far. She underwent emergency surgery as a baby, lost both her parents at a young age, had a stint in psychiatric care, split from husband Adam Barton and was the victim of a rape attack that resulted in the birth of her son, Harry. After a short-lived romance with toyboy Jacob Gallagher, Victoria is focusing her energies on getting to know her long-lost half-brother, John.

Her character has been without a big storyline for a while, but being part of such an iconic brood, we think Vic will always have a home in Emmerdale.

Poor Sam has coped with a lot (Credit: ITV)
Sam is now the longest-serving Dingle (Credit: ITV)

    8. Sam Dingle

Sam’s staying power is pretty impressive. Next year, the much-loved Dingle, and actor James Hooton (who’s played Sam from the start) will be celebrating their 30th anniversaries on the show. This means Sam is the longest-serving Dingle.

Zak’s third son arrived in Emmerdale on Valentine’s Day 1995 straight from a Young Offenders Institution. Sam’s always been the most gentle and naive of the Dingle clan, but has toughened up with age. That’s what life in the Dales does to you!

He’s experienced terrible heartache, losing his first love, Alice to cancer when their son Samson was a few months old. But Sam has since found his happy ending with wife Lydia, and the arrival of his granddaughter, Esther.

    Mandy Dingle points in excitement

    9. Mandy Dingle

Bubbly, brash and a bit bonkers – there’s no mistaking Mandy Dingle. She’s been bringing her own brand of craziness to Emmerdale on and off for over 29 years. Wow!

We first clapped eyes on Mand on July 20, 1995 when she came to live with her Uncle Zak after being kicked out of home. The character turned actress Lisa Riley into a household name.

After two disastrous marriages – the first to her own cousin, Butch, then local vet Paddy Kirk – Mandy left the village in 2000. She returned 19 years later with son Vinny in tow (although it’s now transpired he’s actually Tina Dingle’s offspring).

Mandy is now happily re-married to Paddy, but for how long?

Longest-serving Emmerdale characters: 10. Zak Dingle

Zak was the strong-willed head of the Dingle family and a staple on our screens for 28 years and eight months.

A former notorious bare-knuckle boxing champ, Zak was introduced on October 20, 1994. Over the years, more and more members of the Dingle clan were introduced – from children, to cousins and other distant relatives.

The man behind Zak Dingle was Bury born actor Steve Halliwell. He starred in 2929 episodes, but was forced to step down in June 2023 due to ill health. Steve sadly died on December 15, 2023 at the age of 77.

Zak’s own passing occurred in October 2024 and he was brought home to be laid to rest in Dingle soil.

Marlon has been entertaining audiences since 1996 (Credit: ITV)

Longest-serving Emmerdale characters – No. 11. Marlon Dingle

Just missing out on a place in the top 10 (for now) is everyone’s favourite chef, Marlon Dingle. Played by Mark Charnock, he’s been a permanent fixture since his arrival on October 17, 1996. That means he’s been on our screens for 28 years.

Although not an obvious Romeo, Marlon has been married five times. His current missus is Rhona Goskirk, but arguably the real love of Marlon’s life is his best mate, Paddy, who’s lived in the village nearly as long as he has.

Mark was recognised for his incredible soap career in May 2023 when he received the British Soap Award for Outstanding Achievement. In his acceptance speech the actor joked his almost three decades on the show was ‘the longest streak of luck in television history’!

Things are finally getting better for Paddy (Credit: ITV)
Paddy has been on one heck of a journey (Credit: ITV)

    12. Paddy Dingle

There’s only one man that could follow on from Marlon – his bestie, Paddy Dingle.

We bet when actor Dominic Brunt’s first episode aired on February 20, 1997, he wouldn’t have dreamed he’d still be here 27 years later. And like Marlon, Paddy has never had any time out from the village.

The local vet started out as a locum before settling in the Dales and opening his own practice. Unlike his professional job, Paddy’s personal life has been rather more chaotic. He’s been married five times to four different women, had a few steamy affairs, and battled crippling depression.

So after more than 3200 episodes, we’re wondering what the writers have in store next for Paddy?

    Lisa Dingle in Emmerdale
Lisa was brave enough to take on Zak’s family (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)

    13. Lisa Dingle

Oh lovely Lisa, she was another great character who left us too soon.

Zak’s kind-hearted second wife and mum to Belle, Lisa was the glue that held the Dingles together. She came to the Dales on August 13, 1996 and viewers quickly took her into their hearts.

Fans were outraged when Zak left Lisa for Joanie Wright, but he soon came to his senses. The soulmates wed in a tear-jerking ceremony on May 24, 2019, but by this point Lisa was dying. She slipped away peacefully at Wishing Well Cottage just hours after saying ‘I do’, marking the end of a 23 year stretch on the soap.

Lisa’s last appearance was via voice in February 2024 when Belle read a letter from her late mum.

    Seth Armstrong in Emmerdale
Seth’s character was originally intended to stay for a few episodes (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)

    14. Seth Armstrong

Gamekeeper Seth is no longer with us, but he will always be remembered as one of the all time greats.

Identifiable by famous handlebar moustache and woolly beanie hat, Seth was what you might call a loveable rogue. He was introduced on May 16, 1978, but was only meant to be for a few episodes. He stayed for 26 years, seven months.

However, the fans really took to actor Stan Richards’ portrayal of Seth and by 1980 he was a full-time regular. In total, he featured in 1862 episodes.

Seth is probably best remembered for his romance with Betty Eagleton. The golden oldies had been sweethearts when they were young, but proved to us all love has no age.

Seth was written out of the show in 2003 due to Stan Richards’ ailing health. The character made his last appearance on December 24, 2004 via a video call with Betty. Stan died in February 2005 and Seth was given an off-screen death in October of the same year.

What Belle's been through is not her fault (Credit: ITV)

Longest-serving Emmerdale characters: 15. Belle Dingle

Like Victoria Sugden, Belle Dingle is another Dales lifer.

The character made a memorable entrance into the show on Christmas Day 1998 when she was born in a pigsty. Belle was originally played by twins Emily and James Mather (the latter of whom stopped appearing in 2000). From 2005, she’s been portrayed by Eden Taylor-Draper.

Belle’s been through a lot for a lass her age. She’s survived falling down a mineshaft, she accidentally murdered her best friend, had an affair with a married man and has battled schizophrenia. 2024 has been beyond hellish for Belle with the ordeal she’s suffered at the hands of her abusive husband, Tom King.

Now approaching her 26th birthday, Belle has featured in over 1960 episodes.

Jamie is shocked his mum is dead
Kim Tate’s son Jamie was a chip off the old block (Credit: ITV)

    16. Jamie Tate

Surprising as it seems, but Jamie Tate makes it into the top 20 of Emmerdale’s longest-running characters.

Kim gave birth to her only child on September 24, 1996 at Hotten General Hospital. He was at the centre of a ‘Who’s the Daddy’ storyline, as Kim wasn’t sure if Jamie was Frank’s or her lover Dave Glover’s son. It later transpired he was Frank’s. During his first three years Jamie was portrayed by no fewer than five different actors.

Jamie left the village via helicopter in 1999, and spent two decades away. He returned in 2019 (this time played by Alexander Lincoln), a qualified vet, with a wife and daughter in tow. Jamie soon proved he had inherited his mother’s appetite for adultery and general manipulation.

After causing chaos for a couple of years, Jamie did the off again in September 2021 and faked his own death. So far, Jamie has starred in 472 episodes, and the door has been left open for his return.

    Bernice Blackstock in Emmerdale
Bernice always made an impression wherever she went (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)

    17. Bernice Blackstock

She may have been a bit of a Marmite character, but Bernice Blackstock clocked up a lot of years in Emmerdale.

Work brought the redhead to the Dales, and she was introduced to viewers on November 25, 1998 as the new barmaid of The Woolpack. Bernice rose through the ranks and actually ended up becoming landlady. She’s also best remembered for her marriage to Reverend Ashley Thomas, and running the Grange B&B with Bob Hope.

Bernice had several stints in the village, the longest being seven years, but in 2023 actress Samantha Giles announced she was quitting the soap. The character left under a cloud of shame after being exposed for tax fraud.

Bernice’s last episode aired on November 14, 2023, marking her 1630th appearance. She’s now currently living in exile on the Costa del Sol, and no doubt getting up to mischief.

Cain is scared of living up to Zak's name (Credit: ITV)
Cain is the new head of the Dingle family (Credit: ITV)

    18. Cain Dingle

It’s almost been a quarter of a century since Cain came into our lives. And how glad we are he did.

The Dingle bad boy, first showed up at his cousin Butch’s funeral on March 30, 2000. And he’s been here ever since, bar when actor Jeff Hordley took a three year hiatus between 2006 and 2009.

Cain is one of the show’s most popular characters and it’s not hard to see why. His criminal capers and affairs of the heart are legendary, as is his loyalty towards his beloved brood. With Zak now dearly departed Cain has assumed the role as head of the village’s most iconic clan, and we reckon he’ll do a brilliant job at it.

Charity Dingle is a classic Emmerdale icon (Credit: ITV)

    19. Charity Dingle

Another big fan favourite, Charity Dingle has been shaking things up since she got here on March 30, 2000. Yes, she arrived on exactly the same day Cain did – which was quite fitting given the pair’s history.

Much like her cousin, Charity has had a very colourful life. She’s lived on the streets as a prostitute, been the victim of abuse, served time in jail, been married four times and managed to find the time to have four children.

Played by Emma Atkins, Charity is the current landlady of The Woolpack, which she runs with son Ryan Stocks. She’s now under 100 episodes shy of the 3000 mark.

    bob_hope
Bob has given us some good laughs over the years (Credit: ITV)

Longest-serving Emmerdale characters: 20. Bob Hope

Cheeky chap Bob Hope has providing entertainment in Emmerdale for 24 years. That’s a lot of laughs!

He made his debut on September 19, 2000. Back then Bob was working as a stocking salesman and made an instant impression on postmistress Viv Windsor. The flirty pair went on to marry, and Viv became the fourth Mrs Hope. She wasn’t the last though, Bob was also hitched to Brenda Walker for about five minutes until she found out he was sleeping with Laurel Thomas. Yes, despite his cringey character, Bob is quite the ladies’ man.

Actor Tony Audenshaw will be celebrating his quarter of a century on the show next year, and is approaching his 3000th episode. Now that calls for a double celebration!

  • Robert Sugden: Relationship with Aaron, why he’s in prison and whether he will ever return

Robert Sugden: Relationship with Aaron, why he’s in prison and whether he will ever return

Robert Sugden in Emmerdale is one of the soap’s ‘legacy’ characters. Born on-screen to one of the show’s most iconic families, he was at the heart of all sorts of drama during his years on Emmerdale.

Here’s the lowdown on what he’s been doing and where he is now.

Aaron and Robert look tense as they stride through the village

Robert Sugden in Emmerdale: The early years

Robert’s dad was Jack Sugden and his mum was Jack’s first wife, Pat. He has an older brother, Jackie Merrick, as well as two half siblings, sister Sandie and brother Tommy.

Robert’s mum was killed in a car accident when he was only four months old. When Jack remarried – to Sarah – she brought him up as her own, along with new baby Victoria and eventually adopted brother, Andy.

    Sarah Sugden’s death

Sarah Sugden died in a barn fire set by Andy who thought he was helping the family finances – he thought they could claim on the insurance. When Robert found out Andy was responsible for his mum’s death, it started a feud between the brothers.

Andy, Katie and Robert love triangle in Emmerdale

Andy and his childhood sweetheart Katie Addyman were happy – or so Andy thought – but she started an affair with Robert! When Andy found out he was devastated. Katie and Robert got engaged but he cheated with Sadie King and that was the end of their engagement!

With Robert’s feud with Andy at boiling point, the pair embarked on a lethal game of chicken. Except Max King had asked Andy for a lift and was in his Land Rover as he took on Robert. Andy crashed into a wall and though he escaped, Max was killed when the car blew up.

Wanting to avoid prison, Robert legged it and only returned to watch his dad Jack’s funeral from a distance.

    Robert returns to Emmerdale

Nine years after Max’s death, Robert returned to Emmerdale engaged to Chrissie White. By this time, Andy and Katie had rekindled their romance and were planning a wedding but Robert immediately began meddling.

He had offensive messages engraved on the pair’s wedding rings, leaving the newlyweds fuming!

    Katie catches Robert and Aaron

    Killing Katie!

Desperate for revenge, Katie was convinced that Robert was cheating on Chrissie. She threw herself into finding out who he was having an affair with and was shocked to discover it was Aaron Dingle.

Robert and Katie had a furious argument ending with him shoving her and sending her plummeting through some rotten floorboards. Aaron and Robert covered it up and let Andy find his new wife, and assume it was a tragic accident.

When Paddy found out the truth, Robert tried to kill him in a grain silo.

    Who shot Robert in Emmerdale?

Andy was devastated and furious and wanted to get rid of Robert for good. He made a Strangers on a Train style deal with Ross Barton, each agreeing to kill the other’s brother.

When Robert was shot, there were a whole list of suspects, but Ross wasn’t among them! When Robert found out Andy had been involved there was another game of chicken (do they never learn?!). Andy crashed his car, but this time Robert pulled him from the wreckage and they called a truce.

Robert and Aaron eventually tied the knot

    Robron

Robert and Aaron’s romance was one of fans’ favourite Emmerdale storylines of all time. During the drama of the Hotton by-pass crash, the pair got engaged and planned a huge wedding!

But of course nothing is that easy in Emmerdale! Aaron went back to prison for a bit, he had a brief drug addiction, and then Robert slept with his sister-in-law Rebecca White – mum to Seb who’s being mentioned on screen a lot at the moment. But finally Robron made it down the aisle!

However, their happiness – and fans’ pleasure at their union – wasn’t too last…

Emmerdale: Why is Robert in prison?

During a night out in Hotton, which was filled with drama, Victoria met a man called Lee Posner. He didn’t take no for an answer and raped her in her own house after the night out. Victoria was devastated and locked herself away for a while before she eventually told her shocked family the truth about the rape – and the fact that she was pregnant.

Lee got away with his crime, until Robert took his own revenge. He whacked Lee with a shovel and he died. Robert was sent to jail. He set Aaron free and has subsequently refused to see Victoria. We now also know he has signed his rights away to son Seb following Rebecca’s death.

Later we discovered that it was possibly Lee’s brother, Luke, who’d been responsible for killing him. But Robert remains behind bars.

  • Daz Eden in Emmerdale: Troublemaker, family issues and relationship with Victoria

Daz Eden in Emmerdale: Troublemaker, family issues and relationship with Victoria

Darren ‘Daz’ Eden arrived in Emmerdale in 2003 looking for his half brother, Andy Sugden. He was initially a troublemaker, but managed to reform.

He had a strained relationship with his brother, particularly when it came to Andy’s relationships with Katie and Jo. Daz had his own romantic connections, most notably with Victoria, who many saw as Daz’s sibling.

    Here is Daz’s story.

He loved to cause chaos (Credit: ITV/ Shutterstock)

    Daz the troublemaker

Daz arrived in the Dales in October 2003 searching for his half brother, Andy Sugden. The two shared the same dad – Billy Hopwood.

He was initially a tearaway and immediately took to stealing cars. Daz drove away in Robert’s car, crashing into hay bales in the process. He later stole some more cars, including Jack’s.

When he was punished by being sentenced to community service, he was hoping to do this at Scott’s garage, but Scott refused, meaning Daz would have to go to a young offenders institute. Daz got his revenge by setting fire to the garage.

    Relationship with his brother

When Daz came to the village, Andy was in a relationship with Katie. Katie was having an affair with Andy’s brother Robert, which was discovered by Daz.

Katie threatened Daz and told him that Andy wouldn’t believe him. This turned out to be the case and Katie persuaded Andy to put Daz into care. But when the truth finally came out, Andy visited Daz and persuaded him to come back to the farm.

However, after finally feeling secure and loved by his brother, Andy surprised Daz by getting back with Katie. Daz told Andy he had to choose between him and Katie – Andy chose Katie. Daz then moved in with Jack.

They faced further trouble later on when Daz discovered Andy had been hitting girlfriend Jo. Daz punched Andy but immediately regretted it as he didn’t want to be like Andy or his dad.

    Daz’s mum and dad

Daz’s mum Denise did not appear in many Emmerdale episodes, but when she did, she managed to convince her son she was a changed woman. Daz briefly left the Dales to go live with her, but returned a couple of months later.

Denise returned and insisted Daz make amends with her boyfriend, but he refused. When Diane and Jack decided to start adoption proceedings for Daz, Denise was happy to allow it.

However, Daz’s dad Billy – who was in prison – was not as keen. He felt the Sugdens had already stolen one of his sons.

Upon his release from prison, Billy arrived in the Dales. He got a job and tried to make amends with his sons. Andy told him that Jack was his dad, but Billy did manage to bond with Daz. The relationship was later damaged though when Billy had an affair with Diane.

Emmerdale's Victoria and Daz up close and personal
Daz had a brief fling with Victoria (Credit: ITV/ Shutterstock)

Romantic connection with Victoria and Emmerdale exit

After having a crush on Jasmine Thomas, Daz dated Penny Drury. He then met Scarlett Nicholls, the daughter of Tom King, in 2007. Scarlett took a liking to him immediately and they eventually got together.

However, while he was with Scarlett, he formed a deep connection with Victoria Sugden, who was like a sister to him. The two kissed on Christmas Day in 2008 and then slept together a few months later. Victoria thought this meant they could be a couple, but Daz said it was a mistake and he wanted to stay with Scarlett.

To get revenge, Victoria slept with Aaron at Daz’s house and they were caught by Scarlett and Daz. Daz was angry and went for Aaron before Victoria blurted out that it was Daz’s fault as he didn’t want her any more. Realising they had more than a brother/sister relationship, Aaron and Scarlett were disgusted.

Aaron immediately told Andy, who was equally disgusted. He told Daz to leave and never return. Daz did just that. On his way out of the village, he stopped by the farm to see if he could get a last glimpse of Victoria, but he quickly left as he didn’t want to risk Andy seeing him.

    Who played Daz Eden?

Daz was played by Luke Tittensor. Luke has a twin brother, Elliott, who is also an actor. The twins shared the role of Carl Gallagher in Shameless before Elliott took on the role on his own.

Luke then landed the role of Daz in Emmerdale. After leaving Emmerdale, Luke played Connor in Waterloo Road. He has also appeared in Casualty, Holby City and Moving On.

More recently, he secured the role of Ser Arryk Cargyll in House of the Dragon, alongside his twin brother, who plays Ser Erryk Cargyll.

Emmerdale’s missing kids: From Seb to Millie and Oscar – children that have disappeared without a trace

Emmerdale village has seen a fair few children grow up in it throughout the years but some have been totally forgotten about, adding themselves to the missing kids list.

Some child characters were at the centre of some huge storylines once before disappearing without being mentioned again. Here’s our list of Emmerdale kids who went off the face of the Earth.

    Emmerdale's Jack and Sarah

Emmerdale missing kids: 1. Jack Sugden Jr

Jack Sugden Jr was born in 2012, being the son of Andy Sugden and Debbie Dingle.

As a baby, Jack was seen as a ‘saviour sibling’ as his cells were needed so that ill Sarah could have a transplant to save her life.

Having grown up a bit in 2017, Jack was soon victim of a kidnapping as two henchman threatened Debbie when she stole £50k from her boss to pay for Sarah’s cancer treatment.

Charity and Ross managed to rescue Jack and Sarah fortunately…

In 2019, Jack and Debbie moved to Scotland as Debbie inherited a garage there from Lisa. Sarah wanted to stay in the village with her Granny Charity though and remained put.

Despite several Dingles often heading over to Scotland to visit Debbie over the years, Jack has hardly been mentioned… not even by his sister, Sarah! Just shows how much she misses him really, doesn’t it?!

Emmerdale's Millie is hiding under a table from Kim
Millie was Kim’s whole world once (Credit: ITV/ Shutterstock)

    2. Millie Tate

Millie Tate arrived in the Dales in 2019 as the granddaughter of Kim Tate and then daughter of both Andrea and Jamie Tate.

Kim absolutely spoilt young Millie, with her whole world revolving around her.

At one point, it was uncertain whether Jamie was actually Millie’s biological father and it was uncovered that Andrea had actually slept with Graham Foster near the time of Millie’s conception.

Graham decided to do a secret DNA test and found out that Millie was in fact Jamie’s after all.

Sadly, Millie’s mum Andrea met a grisly end during Meena Jutla’s reign of terror. This led to Millie moving away with her grandma Hazel (and Jamie – although Kim believed him to be dead!)

In 2022, Millie and Hazel turned up for Thomas’ christening and Gabby overheard Millie tell her half-brother that his ‘daddy loves him.’ Hazel quickly took Millie home though before she could spill that Jamie was alive.

And, that was that. Kim had once fought so hard to remain a part of Millie’s life after she moved away with Hazel. But, after 2022, Kim hasn’t mentioned her. A bit bizarre really!

Emmerdale's Oscar is in his hospital bed next to Gail

Emmerdale missing kids: 3. Oscar Grisham

Last year, it was revealed that Gail and Ryan had a secret son called Oscar.

Gail found out that Oscar needed a bone marrow transplant as he was very ill. As his biological mum, she needed to get tested to see if she was a match.

Ryan eventually found out despite Gail keeping this a secret from him at first. Oscar had the surgery and wanted to get to know his birth parents.

His adoptive mum Sophie wasn’t so keen though and lied to Oscar, Gail and Ryan, suggesting that neither of them wanted contact.

Oscar found out the truth though and wanted to get to know Gail and Ryan properly. He even started to bond with Charity… But, the storyline abruptly died and Gail and Ryan seem more focused on the ghost of Noreen Bell these days to care about their son.

Emmerdale's Mack is holding Reuben, speaking to Chloe
Chloe left the village with Reuben (Credit: ITV)

    4. Reuben Harris

Throughout most of 2023, Reuben Harris was thrown into the centre of a huge storyline despite only being a baby.

With Chloe having a one night stand with Mack, Charity was devastated when Reuben was born and she realised that Mack was the baby’s father.

Mack had then split up with Charity and had decided to pursue a proper relationship with Chloe.

This love triangle ended in disaster though after Mack, Chloe and Charity got involved in a huge cliff-top car accident.

Mack chose to save Charity, with Chloe catapulting over the cliff. All three survived, but when Mack eventually got back with Charity things turned even more nasty.

Chloe got her criminal father involved and almost had Mack killed. Charity ended up shooting and killing Harry and saved Mack’s life.

With all of this drama causing her head to spin, Chloe eventually left the village with Reuben despite Mack being desperate to remain in his son’s life. He chose to stay with Charity and let his son go after everything he’d risked in order to be a part of his son’s life in the first place.

Now, ever since Chloe and Reuben left the Dales, Mack’s been carrying on with his life without giving his son a second thought. Lovely.

Emmerdale missing kids: 5. Seb White

Seb White recently got a mention this week in Emmerdale as Ross Barton returned to the soap.

Born in 2017, Seb appeared on the soap for two years as the son of Rebecca White and Robert Sugden.

With Rebecca having a one-night stand with Robert, Aaron and Robert broke up as a result of the strain this put on their relationship.

Seb was born in 2017, with Robert desperate to keep his son in the country when he found out that Bex and her family were planning on taking him to Australia without telling him.

Robert snatched Seb (just as well considering what happened next) and a car chase erupted. Lachlan then deliberately crashed the White family’s car and killed Chrissie and Lawrence. Robert then looked after Seb whilst Bex was in hospital.

In 2019, Rebecca decided to leave the village with Seb and her partner Ross, moving to Liverpool.

However, poor Seb’s mum Bex died recently as a result of some surgery. Ross then told Charity that Seb was living with an aunt of Rebecca’s.

Ross has now just easily allowed for Seb to live with someone else, with Seb not being mentioned much ever since his exit in 2019. Considering Aaron’s connection to Robert, and Victoria’s, you’d think they would’ve at least visited the small chap from time to time…

Emmerdale's Meena is smiling at Theo
Theo moved away from the village with David (Credit: ITV/ Shutterstock)

    6. Theo Metcalfe

Ah, the child of David Metcalfe and Maya Stepney – Theo Metcalfe.

Maya had just come out of prison for grooming Jacob Gallagher when she left a baby on David and Jacob’s doorstep in 2019. There was a slight panic that Theo (initially named Alex) could’ve been Jacob’s, but a DNA test confirmed that he was David’s son.

During his time in the Dales, Theo found himself caught up in Meena Jutla’s cruel tricks as Meena stole Theo to get back at her boyfriend, David. She then played the hero and brought him back home, suggesting that she’d been the one to find him.

In 2023, David decided to leave the village with his son Theo, heading to London to live with Priya and Amba. Despite Jacob remaining in the village, he hasn’t mentioned his ‘brother’ since. And, Eric hasn’t mentioned his grandson either… How odd!

  • The White family in Emmerdale: From Lawrence and Chrissie’s deaths to serial killer Lachlan and tragic Rebecca

The White family in Emmerdale: From Lawrence and Chrissie’s deaths to serial killer Lachlan and tragic Rebecca

The White family in Emmerdale appeared on screen between 2014 and 2018 and they certainly made their mark in the village during those years!

With Lawrence White at its head, the family took over Home Farm. Daughter Chrissie was engaged to Robert Sugden and her son from a previous relationship, Lachlan, came too. Younger sister, Rebecca landed in 2016.

Tragedy seemed to follow them around, so it hardly seems surprising that the death of Rebecca White has just been announced on screen. Her dad and sister are already gone and her nephew is in prison for multiple murders. Let’s just hope young Seb can escape the family curse!

Here’s what happened to the Whites – and where the actors are now.

Emmerdale: What happened to the White Family?

Lawrence White in Emmerdale played by John Bowe

Head of the family Lawrence White was born in Emmerdale (then known as Beckindale) in 1943. Lawrence was gay and had an affair with Edna Birch’s husband. She reported them to the police and Lawrence was put in prison where he was subjected to brutal aversion therapy that changed him forever.

He later met and married a woman named Ellen and they had two children, Chrissie and Rebecca. He built up a fortune with a farm machinery business. Lawrence first returned to the village when he was tracked down by Paddy and Sandy wanting to help Edna move on.

Lawrence then bought Home Farm and moved in with his family. He struck up a friendship with Bernice Blackstock and eventually they got engaged.

Although they married, it was a sexless union and Lawrence gave his blessing for her to have affairs to satisfy that side of things. Chrissie was disgusted when she found out and even more so when it led to the revelation Lawrence was not her biological dad. Chrissie tracked down a man named Ronnie Hale who she believed to be her father, but was in fact, Lawrence’s old lover.

By January 2018 Lawrence had had enough of life in the village and decided to emigrate to Australia. However, he never made it that far.

Chrissie White played by Louise Marwood

Robert’s fiancée was smitten with her man, but had no idea what a conniving and double-crossing schemer he really was. He was also having an affair with Aaron Dingle behind her back and killed Katie Sugden on his and Chrissie’s wedding day to protect his secret.

The wedding went ahead and Chrissie and Robert settled into married life. But soon Chrissie discovered not only had Robert set-up a robbery at Home Farm, he was also cheating on her.

When he refused to sign the divorce papers, Chrissie poured petrol everywhere and set fire to his car. But as Robert put the fire out to rescue Adam Barton who was sleeping nearby, they had no idea the fire had spread to some gas cannisters which then exploded. The explosion hit a helicopter which then crashed into the town hall where Debbie Dingle and Pete Barton were getting married. The explosion resulted in the deaths of Ruby Haswell and Val Pollard and Chrissie became a village pariah.

After receiving a suspended sentence, Chrissie began a fling with Robert’s brother Andy Sugden. She later found out Lawrence was not her real dad and her and Lachlan were thrown out of Home Farm. Fuming Lachlan shot his grandad in the stomach and Chrissie scrambled to cover up the crime. She framed Andy after discovering him cheating with Bernice Blackstock.

In 2018, Chrissie planned to move to Australia with her family, but tragedy struck…

Lachlan White played by Thomas Atkinson

Lachlan, nicknamed ‘Lucky’ by his mum proved to be an extremely disturbed young man. This first became apparent when he befriended Jacob Gallagher and grew close to his mum, Alicia. Lachlan then sexually assaulted Alicia who called the police.

Lawrence and Chrissie immediately defended him, but then Chrissie found evidence and realised he was guilty. She called the police herself and Lachlan went to prison.

Lachlan then continued to show psychopathic tendencies when he shot Lawrence in the stomach. They family covered it up and framed Andy for it. But his worst crimes were yet to come…

Rebecca White played by Emily Head

Rebecca White arrived in Emmerdale in 2016 unannounced and in a helicopter. She promptly slapped Robert round the face! But it turned out she and Robert were working together to find out if Rebecca was Lawrence’s biological child.

Rebecca made a move on Robert – who was involved with Aaron Dingle – and their affair was revealed by twisted Lachlan in the pub on Rebecca’s 30th birthday. But Rebecca knew that Lachlan had shot Lawrence and framed Andy Sugden and she soon manipulated Lachlan into admitting it.

With Lachlan behind bars and Chrissie furious because she had been the one to cover it up, the sisters’ feud intensified. Rebecca then had a fling with Ross Barton and Robert Sugden. She fell pregnant with Robert’s baby.

When baby Seb arrived, Rebecca and the rest of the Whites decided the only way to keep Robert out of their lives was to leave for Australia.

The deaths of Lawrence and Chrissie White in Emmerdale

Lachlan did not want to leave so he told Robert about it, who kidnapped Seb. The White family gave chase, but Lachlan grabbed the wheel and steered the car to hit a lorry head-on. Lawrence was sitting in the back seat with no seatbelt on and was catapulted through the back windshield. Chrissie was also killed.

What happened to the rest of the White family in Emmerdale, Rebecca and Lachlan?

Rebecca suffered permanent brain damage after the accident. And for Lachlan it was the start of his road to becoming a serial killer.

His best mate Gerry knew the truth about what had happened in the car, so Lachlan killed him. He also murdered a conman posing as Gerry’s uncle.

Lachlan then kidnapped Rebecca after she found Liv Flaherty and Robert unconscious in Mill Cottage following Lachlan’s attempt to gas them. He kept her in a deserted chalet and also told her the truth about the car crash.

It looked like he had killed Rebecca when he strangled her. But it was eventually revealed to viewers that Rebecca was alive and in a  remote cottage, being kept by a retired nurse. Rebecca got free and managed to find Aaron, Victoria and Robert.

After Lachlan tried to get Belle to run away with him, she managed to get away and was accidentally run over by Robert. Lachlan was arrested and taken to prison, where he currently remains.

    Rebecca White’s death

After rekindling things with Ross Barton, Rebecca went to live with him and Seb in Liverpool. Not much else has been said about them since other than the odd mention when his son Moses goes to visit.

However now Ross is back in town and has revealed the shocking news that Rebecca is dead. She apparently went in for routine surgery and her heart stopped. Seb has gone to live with Rebecca’s aunt in Bristol and we are all totally shocked.

She told the tabloid outlet: “Having completely decimated my life, this appeal is asking for the opportunity to put my life back together again.

“I want to carry a story of strength and hope to the addict that still suffers while busting wide open the chaos that addiction causes to your life and everybody that you drag down with it.

“I was very unwell for a very long time and because of that I want to use my platform to help other people and that’s what I’m asking for the opportunity to do, really.”

She added she is “much better” but “not perfect” and still progressing.

  • Dr Adam Forsythe: From pillar of the community to cold-hearted killer

Dr Adam Forsythe: From pillar of the community to cold-hearted killer

Dr Adam Forsythe arrived in Emmerdale as the love interest of troubled Steph Stokes.

At first he seemed to be her knight in shining armour, but things soon took a dark turn as he was hiding a very dark secret. Here’s the lowdown.

    Arriving in Emmerdale

Dr Adam came to the village as the new GP and was thrown right in at the deep end when teenager Debbie Dingle went into labour and he had to deliver her baby!

He quickly won over the local pensioners with his charm, and also attracted the attention of Steph Stokes, who managed the B&B.

Steph and Adam hit it off and started a relationship.

Terence Turner blackmails Adam in Emmerdale

Steph opened up to Adam and told him that her brother Terence had sexually abused her when they were teenagers. Adam was horrified and supported Steph when she told her dad, Alan, what had happened.

But Alan didn’t believe Steph, and took Terence’s side.

Then Terence turned his attention to Adam, and went digging into his past. He discovered Adam had been struck off and was no longer legally allowed to be a doctor! He then started blackmailing Adam.

Terence’s campaign against Steph and Adam came to an end when Adam found him attacking Steph! There was a struggle that only ended when Adam whacked Terence with a fire extinguisher and pushed him down the stairs, killing him.

Terence died, and Adam and Steph buried him in the woods!

Steph Stokes (Lorraine Chase) and Adam Forsythe (Richard Shelton) bury Terrences body but when Steph panics, Adam slaps her and she's scared she's seen a different side to him.

    Paranoia!

Poor Steph struggled with what they – well, Adam, really – had done. Adam was so worried he whisked her off to Barbados, and they tied the knot.

But Steph’s paranoia just increased and worried that she was about to fess up, Adam started drugging her.

When Steph finally admitted what they’d done to her stunned dad, Alan Turner, Adam let her guide him to the woods. But when they got there, the body had gone!

Adam had sneakily moved Terence’s corpse. Eventually he was found when the King’s River showhome exploded.

    Adam exposed in Emmerdale

Adam tried to kill poor Steph and fled, but he was later arrested.

On the stand, he told the court that Steph had killed Shelley Williams. Steph, knowing that was true and that she’d got away with it, instead confessed to murdering Terence and was sentenced to life imprisonment.

But she implicated Adam and he was also sent to prison. But just a few days later, he took his own life in his cell.

    Who played Dr Adam Forsythe?

Adam was played by Richard Shelton. Since his stint on Emmerdale he’s written and starred in several Frank Sinatra tribute shows, and won awards for his skills!

  • Rebecca White in Emmerdale: Kidnap ordeal, romance with Ross Barton, and tragic death

Rebecca White in Emmerdale: Kidnap ordeal, romance with Ross Barton, and tragic death

Rebecca White arrived in Emmerdale in 2016 to catch up with her sister Chrissie, nephew Lachlan and dad Lawrence.

But she most definitely stayed for the drama! Which, to be fair, was mostly caused by Rebecca herself.

And now we’ve found out – via a newly returned Ross Barton – that Rebecca has tragically died.

Here’s the lowdown on everything that happened during her time in the Dales.

Rebecca White (Emily Head) in Emmerdale

    Rebecca White arrives in Emmerdale

Always a fan of making an entrance, Rebecca arrived in Emmerdale unannounced and in a helicopter and promptly slapped Chrissie’s ex-husband Robert Sugden round the face.

But it was all a big act! Because Rebecca and Robert were in cahoots, aiming to find out if Rebecca was Lawrence’s biological child.

    Secret romance

With that mischief done and dusted, Rebecca made a move on Robert – who was involved with Aaron Dingle by then – and he responded.

Rebecca and Robert’s affair was revealed by twisted nephew Lachlan in the pub on Rebecca’s 30th birthday. But Rebecca knew that Lachlan was the one who’d shot Lawrence and framed Andy Sugden for the crime and she was soon manipulating Lachlan into admitting it.

With Lachlan behind bars and Chrissie furious about it, the sisters’ feud intensified.

    Who’s the daddy?

But Rebecca was busy elsewhere, having a fling with Ross Barton and Robert Sugden. When she found out she was pregnant, she wasn’t sure who the dad was.

With Robert confirmed as her baby daddy, Rebecca tried to build a mature co-parenting relationship with him.

Totally failed, of course, but she tried.

    Car accident

When baby Seb arrived, Rebecca and the rest of the Whites decided the only way to keep Robert out of their lives was to leave for Australia.

So off they went, but Lachlan was annoyed about having to leave so he told Robert, who gave chase.

Lachlan grabbed the wheel and the car hit a lorry head-on, killing both Chrissie and Lawrence, and leaving Rebecca with permanent brain damage.

    Lachlan’s reign of terror

It was the start of Lachlan’s reign of terror in the village. He went on to kill best mate Gerry, tried to gas Liv and Robert – only to be discovered red-handed by Rebecca.

He murdered a conman posing as Gerry’s uncle, and for a while viewers thought he had killed Rebecca too!

But actually he had kidnapped poor Rebecca. He held her hostage in a remote cottage, complete with a creepy nurse in attendance.

Eventually Rebecca got free, with some help from Belle, and Lachlan went to prison. Phew!

What happened between Ross and Rebecca White in Emmerdale?

With Ross Barton recovering from his acid attack, and Rebecca rebuilding her life with her brain injury, the pair began to grow close.

Eventually, Ross decided to leave Emmerdale and go to live in Liverpool, and Rebecca went too with little Seb.

And that was the last we’d heard of them – until Ross showed up at Billy’s dodgy bare-knuckle fight this week.

Now we know that Rebecca died suddenly during an operation, and that her son Seb has gone to live with Rebecca’s aunt in Bristol. Ross seems pretty cut up about it, but is trying to put on a brave face. Will more come out about her demise in the coming days?

    Who played Rebecca White?

Rebecca was played by Emily Head. She was known for her role as Carli in The Inbetweeners among other things. Since then she’s been in TV dramas including The Syndicate and Whitstable Pearl.

Her dad is Buffy star Anthony Head and her sister is fellow actress Daisy Head.

From Donna Windsor to Charity and Debbie Dingle: Inside the many relationships of Ross Barton

Ross Barton returned to Emmerdale last night, striding back onto the scene as Billy’s opponent in an illegal bare-knuckle boxing ring. This marks an explosive return for the bad boy of the Dales, who shares a son with Charity.

Ross’s return to the village is sure to send shockwaves around those who used to know him – not least Charity, who is currently playing happy families with husband Mack Boyd.

However, Charity is just one of the many women in Ross’s chequered past. But what happened between Ross and Charity, and who else succeeded in stealing his heart?

Donna Windsor – the first woman Ross truly loved

Dodgy Ross falling for the village police officer wasn’t a match anyone could have expected, but when he fell for Donna Windsor, he fell hard. However, realising that she had secrets of her own, the pair grew close and soon became lovers.

Keeping the fact that she had lung cancer a secret from Ross, the pair worked together to rob local criminal Gary North. The pair’s relationship ended in tragedy when Donna, while handcuffed to Gary, threw herself off a building. Confessing her love to Ross before she jumped, Donna left Ross heartbroken.

Carly Hope comes to Emmerdale – and falls for Ross

In 2015, Ross began dating Carly Hope, daughter of Bob – and Donna’s step-sister. The pair dated for a while after being set up by his mother, but she dumped him after seeing the violence he inflicted upon an innocent driver while robbing a haulage truck.

What happened between Ross and Debbie Dingle?

Since arriving in the village, Ross had always had eyes for Debbie Dingle. However, she was in a relationship with his brother, Pete. It was when she got engaged to Pete that their affair began, with the pair even making a plan to run away together shortly before the wedding.

However, their plans were scuppered when dad Cain dropped a doozy of a bombshell…

Charity Dingle and the birth of Moses

At the same time, Ross had fathered a child after a one-night stand with Charity Dingle. After revealing the truth while on his brother’s stag do (such timing), he originally wanted nothing to do with his son.

However, he eventually softened, and his mother even managed to convince Emma to add his name to Moses’s birth certificate.

Meanwhile, Debbie and Ross continued to return to each other over the years, even making a go of things in spite of his fathering a child with her mother. Their relationship crumbled for the first time in 2015, when she left the village after learning that he’d shot Robert Sugden.

The pair reconciled in 2017, when Debbie returned to the village after daughter Sarah was diagnosed with cancer. It looked, for a moment, as though they would reunite for good, but ultimately decided not to for Sarah’s sake.

In 2016, Ross bedded Kerry as part of a bet with his brother. Kerry, who had been with Dan at the time, fell pregnant with Ross’s child and had a termination.

When Dan found out he was furious and confronted Ross… only to be knocked out with one punch from the future bareknuckle boxer.

Why did Ross leave Emmerdale? Rebecca White and exit from the village

In 2017, he began sleeping with Rebecca White. They broke up after he learned she’d had a one-night stand with Robert. Following his acid attack, he and Rebecca reconciled, bonding over their shared trauma.

In 2018, he and Rebecca decided to leave the village for a new life in Liverpool. Ross initially planned on bringing Moses, but Charity stopped him from doing so after learning about his cocaine use.

Ross and Rebecca left the village that year, with promises from Charity that he’d still get regular access to Moses. What he’s been up to in recent years is unclear, but it looks as though Rebecca is no longer on the scene…

  • Dawn Woods in Emmerdale: Marriage to Terry, romance with Scott and tragic death

Dawn Woods in Emmerdale: Marriage to Terry, romance with Scott and tragic death

Dawn Woods shocked her father Bob when she arrived in Emmerdale in 2003 and announced she was engaged to the much older Terry.

She stayed in the village for three years before meeting a tragic end in 2006. With her final weeks currently playing out on Classic Emmerdale, we take a look at Dawn’s time in the Dales.

    Dawn’s marriage to Terry

Dawn arrived in Emmerdale as the fiancée of Terry Woods after they had met on holiday in Spain. It was then revealed that she was the daughter of Bob Hope. Bob had left her, her mum Jean and brother Jamie when she was just 4 years old.

Despite’s Bob’s reservations over the 27-year age gap, Dawn and Terry got married in March 2003, a month after her arrival. They went on to have son TJ (Terry Junior) together. But shortly after TJ’s birth, Terry a stroke. Struggling to cope with a baby and an ill husband, Dawn ended the marriage.

When Dawn’s mum arrived to support her through the split, she took a liking to Terry and made a move on him. After being rejected, she encouraged her daughter to go for sole custody of TJ. Dawn agreed, arguing that due to his stroke, Terry often got tired and was a possible risk to TJ.

Emmerdale Dawn Woods: Relationship with her stepbrother

Dawn started seeing her stepbrother Scott Windsor, which gained more disapproval from Bob – who was married to Scott’s mum Viv. The couple soon moved in together, but Dawn was devastated when Scott left her. Zoe Tate was planning to move to America with her and Scott’s daughter Jean, and had invited Scott to go with them.

Scott sent Dawn a letter telling her that it was best if they split as people thought their relationship was weird and he had convinced himself that he didn’t love her. Not wanting to see Scott or Zoe before they left for the US, Dawn legged it to Spain to stay with her mum.

However, Scott never made it to America. Zoe discovered that he and his mum were plotting to take Jean. A fight occurred and Zoe stabbed Scott with a syringe full of ketamine. Dawn flew home just as Scott woke up in hospital and initially forgave him. But after she discovered he’d been blackmailing Paddy to be a witness against Zoe at trial, his true colours was shown to Dawn.

Scott later punched Dawn by mistake while attacking Paddy and he was arrested for assault. Realising that Scott might be capable of rape as Zoe claimed, Dawn ended their relationship for good.

    Time in prison

After his release from prison, Scott decided to get revenge on Dawn by reporting Dawn for benefit fraud. She’d been doing odd jobs to support TJ and make ends meet.

Dawn was sentenced to 6 weeks in prison, although she only served 3 weeks. Upon her release, she was shocked to discover that her mum and Terry were now in a relationship. When they refused to end their relationship, Dawn reminded Terry that her mum was the reason she went for sole custody of their son.

Dawn banned both Terry and her mum from seeing TJ and took him away to Cornwall.

    Dawn’s tragic death

When Dawn returned to Emmerdale, she informed everyone that she had met someone and would be moving there permanently. Terry begged her to change her mind, but she refused.

On the day of her planned departure, Dawn allowed Terry to spend the day with TJ, but he was late returning TJ, resulting in them missing the flight.

Wanting something to do to pass the time, Dawn went with Marlon and Donna to visit their new house at the King’s River Showhome. However, a sabotage of the plot had been arranged by Sadie King and when the boiler room door was opened, the whole place exploded.

At first it appeared that Dawn was fine, with her injuries seeming minor. Doctors planned to observe her and then release her. But things took a turn and Bob returned from getting a coffee to see his daughter being rushed into emergency theatre. He was later told that she passed away from internal injuries.

    Who played Dawn Woods?

Dawn was played by Julia Mallam. Before starring in Emmerdale, Julia had appeared in Fat Friends and Peak Practice.

After leaving Emmerdale, she starred in 50 episodes of children’s TV show Captain Mack. She also popped up in The Bill, Casualty and Doctors, although hasn’t appeared on TV since 2012.

  • A lookback at Belle’s previous mental health crises as she starts to hear voices again

A lookback at Belle’s previous mental health crises as she starts to hear voices again

In Emmerdale, Belle Dingle has struggled with her mental health during her time in the village and recent heartbreaking scenes have seen her start to hear voices again.

Belle, played by Eden Taylor-Draper, has a lot on her plate right now. She recently lost her beloved dad, Zak Dingle, while still dealing with her abusive estranged husband, Tom King.

As she becomes overwhelmed with life again, we take a look back at her history with mental health.

Emmerdale: Belle guilt over Gemma’s death

Belle’s first experience with mental health came following her release from prison in late 2014. Following an argument over Sean Spencer, Belle pushed her best friend Gemma Andrews. Gemma hit her head on a rock and subsequently died from her injuries.

Belle was sentenced to 3 years in a young offenders centre (later reduced to 1 year.) Upon her release, Belle struggled to adjust to normal life. Her behaviour became erratic – she dyed her blonde hair black and befriended local weirdo Lachlan White.

Belle was later discovered by Harriet and Ashley Thomas in the church, crying and covered in blood. But she refused to share who caused the injuries. She went on to trash David Metcalfe’s shop and Edna Birch’s house.

It later emerged that she was having a mental health crisis and believed that Gemma was talking to her. She admitted to herself in her mind that she believed she had graffitied her house and harmed herself because “Gemma” told her to. Belle also believed “Gemma” was responsible for her brother Cain Dingle‘s brain aneurysm.

The voices and erratic behaviour worsened while working with Katie Sugden, where Katie witnessed Belle talking to Gemma. In order to get away from Katie, Belle bit her and then locked herself in Katie’s car.

In the car, Gemma’s voice instructed Belle to run over Zak. Belle did not go through with this and unlocked the car door. But it wasn’t quite the end of her ordeal, as following Katie’s death – in which she fell through the floor at Wylie’s Farm – Belle believed that she was responsible and tried to end her own life in the same way. She was eventually sectioned.

    Emmerdale: Bell diagnosed with schizophrenia

In 2016, a 17-year-old Belle started an affair with married doctor, Jermaine Bailey. In order to keep their relationship going, Belle lied to him that she was pregnant.

With life getting on top of her again, Belle then started talking to a friend from prison – Ellie, but it was later revealed that Ellie was one of Belle’s visual hallucinations. Amongst other things, “Ellie” convinced Belle to pour red wine onto Joanie’s wedding dress.

The truth was discovered when Jermaine’s wife Angie overheard Belle talking to Ellie. Belle had a breakdown in front of her family, but later run away. After spending some time living rough, Belle collapsed and was taken to hospital.

At the hospital, Belle lashed out at Lisa, thinking she was planning to kill her. Belle was assessed and her family were informed that Belle was hearing more than one voice. She was diagnosed with schizophrenia and sent away to a secure unit.

    Emmerdale: Belle suffered a relapse

In 2020 Emmerdale, Belle’s love interest Jamie Tate tried to frame Belle for the hit and run that left Moira Dingle for dead. With the threat of prosecution for a crime she didn’t commit hanging over her, her mental health begun to suffer once again.

Belle stopped taking her medication and the voices returned – including that of her mother Lisa, who died a year prior.

The voice of Lisa warned Belle that Jamie was a danger to the family. So Belle went looking for him with a knife. Fortunately, she was stopped by Mackenzie Boyd.

She then hallucinated that pregnant Tracy Metcalfe was Jamie, and was determined to stab her, but Tracy managed to make Belle see who she really was. Belle was hospitalised and started to take her medication again.

What has happened to Belle now?

Last week, the Dingles received the devastating news that head of the family, Zak Dingle, had died. A week of heartbreaking episodes followed as the family said goodbye to Zak.

In Wednesday’s episode (October 23), Belle was arrested after she breached her bail conditions. After receiving flowers, Belle was convinced Tom had sent them and approached him to share her disgust. Tom then reported Belle to the police as the couple are supposed to stay away from each other.

Back at home, Belle sought comfort at Zak’s graveside. Wearing his oversized shirt, Belle told her dad that she didn’t realise how much she needed him. We then heard her side of a conversation as it became clear she was hearing Zak’s voice.

Will Belle be able to get help before her mental health escalates again?
