Top Emmerdale whodunnits: From Tom King’s death to Cain Dingle’s attack, the most unforgettable moments

Emmerdale have treated us to some cracking whodunnits over the years, drawing fans into the mystery and giving them the chance to play detective.

The latest crime we’re all trying to solve is who killed Anthony Fox? Ruby’s rapist dad was murdered just hours after his crimes became public knowledge. Right now it looks like Aaron Dingle beat him to death, but there are clues that’s not the whole story.

Anthony isn’t the only villain to have found themselves at the centre of a gripping whodunnit. Here we look back at those puzzling cases that kept us guessing until the big reveal…

Emmerdale best whodunnits: Who murdered Tom King?

Perhaps Emmerdale’s most famous whodunnit, Tom’s murder was the centre of the 2006 Christmas special.

The nasty King patriarch had just married the equally loathsome Rosemary Sinclair, but what should have been a day of celebration ended in disaster. While getting ready for the reception in his bedroom at Home Farm, Tom was approached by a mystery figure. An argument ensued, Tom was clobbered over the head with an ornament and pushed out of the window to his death.

There were 10 official suspects in the frame for the crime, including all three of Tom’s sons and his new bride. And in a soap first, Emmerdale gave fans the chance to play detective by launching an online game so they could gather clues.

After five months of keeping everyone guessing, Tom’s son Carl was unmasked as the killer. But instead of being carted off down the cop shop, Carl remained in the village. He’d got away with murder, but the soap gods always find a way to punish. In the end, Carl got his comeuppance when he was bumped off by serial killer Cameron Murray in 2012.

    Who attacked Cain Dingle?

In 2011, Emmerdale announced Cain Dingle would be attacked in a whodunnit, dubbed ‘Judgement Day’. The storyline made perfect sense as Cain was the most hated man in the Dales.

His affair with Moira had destroyed the Barton family, he’d got 17-year-old Amy Wyatt pregnant, made an enemy of Jai Sharma and managed to alienate his own family.

After a showdown one night in The Woolpack Cain was bludgeoned with a crowbar. He tried to escape, but was struck again over the head and left for dead. Moments later, Cameron Murray came across the scene of the crime and saw Jai standing over the body, his hands covered in Cain’s blood.

Cain was rushed to hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery for a clot on the brain. He came out of his coma and tried to frame Jai for the crime. Moira’s wronged husband John was also arrested, but then released due to a lack of evidence.

On January 5, 2012 – less than a month after the attack – Cain’s own dad Zak was revealed to be the perpetrator. Zak confessed he’d wanted to teach Cain a lesson for his continual bad behaviour and disgracing the Dingle name. Cain eventually forgave his father and agreed to drop the charges against Jai.

Emmerdale best whodunnits: Who shot Robert Sugden?

Ruthless Robert was another one who didn’t give a damn who he hurt. So it was only a matter of time before he ended up with a bullet in him.

In September 2015, Robert became public enemy number one after it was revealed he’d pushed Katie Sugden to her death. One of his haters took their revenge by gunning Rob down in the village.

Emmerdale added a twist to the tale by deciding to reveal the shooter in a special flashback episode, which aired the month later.

The clock was rewound and viewers discovered Robert’s adoptive brother, Andy was the culprit. He’d wanted Robert dead for what he did to Katie, but had paid Ross Barton to pull the trigger for him.

    Who killed Emma Barton?

Killer nurse Emma Barton got her comeuppance when she was shoved off Hotten Viaduct in October 2017. The discovery of her body sparked a huge whodunnit, with lots of twists and turns along the way.

In the lead up to her death, Emma was spiraling out of control. The year before she’d pushed husband James off a bridge during the Hotten Bypass. She’d also accidentally killed her youngest son Finn and kidnapped Moira Dingle’s baby Isaac. Haunted by hallucinations of James, Emma drove herself to the viaduct to end it all.

First thoughts were that Emma had committed suicide, but it then became clear it was murder. There were many who had reason to want Emma gone, but only one who hated her enough to kill. And that one person was Moira.

The truth was revealed in flashback scenes, which were cleverly intertwined with present day. Moira confessed to the police that she’d pushed Emma, but escaped punishment after her son Adam managed to convince them he was the killer. He then fled the country as a fugitive.

Emmerdale best whodunnits: Who pushed Kim Tate?

Kim Tate’s dramatic return in 2018 was a night to remember after she got pushed off a balcony by an unknown culprit.

Guests had gathered at Home Farm for a charity masquerade ball when Kim made her entrance. Fresh from jail and looking a million dollars, Kim announced she was back on the throne. But within minutes, the superbitch was making enemies with just about everyone.

One partygoer did not take kindly to Kim’s insults and shoved her over the balcony. Kim came crashing down on a champagne tower and for a moment fans feared she was dead.

Charity Dingle was arrested for the attack as witnesses had seen her quarreling with Kim, but in fact it was Faith Dingle who ‘fessed up to the deed. Faith showed little remorse, admitting everyone at the ball wanted to give ‘that witch a shove’.

And as for Kim, she lived to tell the tale, but was carted back to prison for driving without a licence.

Graham was killed by Pierce in Emmerdale
Graham met a very grisly end (Credit: ITV/YouTube)

    Who was Graham Foster’s killer?

Emmerdale kicked 2020 off in style with the murder of fan-favourite Graham Foster. Joe Tate’s former right-hand man made a lot of enemies during his two years in the village.

Graham’s on-off affair with Kim Tate had turned toxic after he’d started dating Rhona Goskirk, and she’d already instructed Al Chapman to kill him. Charity Dingle was baying for Graham’s blood after he locked her son Ryan Stocks in a shed. And then there was Marlon Dingle, who was desperate to stop Graham leaving the country with Rhona and Leo.

On January 20, 2020, Graham arranged to meet Marlon in the woods to discuss matters. But he never got the chance when he was walloped over the head by a hooded figure, who revealed themselves to be Rhona’s ex-husband and rapist Pierce Harris.

It turned out the pair had history after Graham visited Pierce in prison and had him beaten up. This time Pierce came out on top. He attacked Graham with a log, causing him to fall off a cliff. Pierce then delivered the final, fatal, blow with a torch!

    Caleb speaks
Caleb’s crimes caught up with him (Credit: ITV)

Emmerdale best whodunnits: Who attacked Caleb Miligan?

No one was surprised when cold-hearted Caleb was pushed off a steep ravine by one of his foes.

In typical soap style, in the minutes leading up to the attack Caleb was busy making an enemy of just about everyone. But he’d already spent months lying and scheming as part of his mission to destroy Kim Tate.

When the truth came out, the villagers turned on Caleb during a tense showdown in the pub. Afterwards, Caleb took a walk into the countryside to think on his sins. But he wasn’t alone. Someone followed behind and shoved him over the edge of a woodland ridge.

Several characters were seen acting suspiciously at the time and most had their money on Mackenzie Boyd. However, it later transpired Caleb’s son Nicky was responsible for the violent attack. Viewers learnt the truth when the nanny paid his comatose father a visit in hospital and apologised for what he’d done.

Caleb came round and revealed he’d known all along it was Nicky. But he chose to forgive his boy, acknowledging it was his fault for forcing Nicky to take part in his dastardly schemes.

    Craig Reed in Emmerdale
Evil Craig died under the hooves of Kim’s horse (Credit: ITV)

    How did Craig Reed die?

The body of Lydia Dingle’s rapist was discovered on in the middle of a field back in October 2023, sparking what turned out to be Emmerdale’s most surprising whodunnit. It was a confusing case, but viewers only had to wait four days for the big reveal.

During a special week of episodes, the Dingles took centre stage at a lock-in at The Woolpack. One by one, the family were interrogated by Lydia, as she questioned their whereabouts the day Craig died.

Huge secrets were revealed, and for a while it looked as if Sam had murdered his wife’s abuser. But in a twist that, let’s face it, no one saw coming, Craig’s killer turned out to be Kim Tate’s horse, Ice.

Flashback scenes revealed Kim was out riding when she encountered Craig on her land. Bloodied and bruised after being beaten by Sam, Craig was raving like a loony. He jumped in front of Ice, who reacted by trampling Craig. By the time Cain arrived on the scene Craig was on his way out, so he and Kim opted not to dial 999. Instead the pair just calmly departed, leaving Craig to perish.

What did we say about those soap gods?

  • Ruby’s brilliant, Kim is BACK and did Aaron really kill Anthony? We’re not sure! It’s been quite the week in Emmerdale

Ruby’s brilliant, Kim is BACK and did Aaron really kill Anthony? We’re not sure! It’s been quite the week in Emmerdale

It’s still all about Ruby in our Emmerdale review this week, though now lots of other people have got involved in her heartbreaking story which is a bit distracting and slightly annoying.

But overall there was a lot to love in this week’s Emmerdale. Here’s what we thought in our Emmerdale review.

Ruby in Emmerdale is tearful and distraught (Credit: ITV/Comp Emmerdale Insider)
Ruby – played by Beth Cordingly – is brilliant (Credit: ITV/Comp Emmerdale Insider)

    Ruby continues to be brilliant

Yes, the focus wasn’t always on Ruby this week but we still think she’s absolutely brilliant and a fabulous addition to Emmerdale. We love when characters are allowed to settle into a soap before they’re given a huge storyline. Us getting to know Ruby before this bombshell landed really paid off while Ella’s story never really hit the spot.

Ruby and Cain kiss in the garage
We really wish this hadn’t happened (Credit: ITV)

Cain and Ruby is a complication too far

But saying all that, we still really wish the Cain and Ruby thing hadn’t happened. It’s just an additional complication this storyline doesn’t need.

Ruby being abused by her dad would have been enough. Now there’s the fact of him being Steph’s dad. AND his mysterious death in the mix, too. Cain and Ruby seemed unnecessary at the time and now seems even more of a blind alley.

Emmerdale review: Laurel whacks Anthony over the head with an antique candlestick
Laurel whacked Anthony over the head and we weren’t even sorry (Credit: ITV)

Laurel and Nicola is a bit weird

Anyway, now Anthony’s dead, and Laurel and Nicola are agonising over whether they played a part in his disappearance.

Nicola even made the effort to go to a random ward in Hotton General and ask questions – most people would have just given them a ring, Nico. And then what do you know? Steph went to the SAME hospital and asked the same questions of the same nurse. What are the chances, eh? That nurse clearly isn’t working hard enough if she’s got time to hang around and wait to be asked questions about old men.

But we digress. Laurel and Nicola’s part in the Anthony death drama is a bit odd and feels slightly stuck on. They’re flailing round the village panicking about going to prison and it feels like a distraction. But we did laugh when Laurel said Nicola would handle prison better than she would. She’s right!

    Emmerdale review: Caleb’s useless

Caleb continues to be the worst husband, having made the whole thing about himself and left poor Ruby at home, desperately worried about Steph. Caleb played a weird game of Russian roulette with Anthony, trying to get him to confess – even though he knew the whole story from Ruby. And then the gun went off, and Anthony scarpered.

    Slow hand clap, Caleb.

Anthony was punched to the ground by an angry Aaron (Credit: ITV)

But Aaron had us in bits

We love when we get a glimpse of vulnerable Aaron and his confrontation with Anthony was so good but very grim. Also, can we just point out that Aaron – Ruby’s neighbour – had clocked how she acted round her dad but her actual husband and daughter had not. Tsk.

Anyway, Aaron forcing the truth from Anthony was a hard watch. Aaron was clearly reliving his own trauma. While Anthony revealed his true, awful, despicable colours alternating between sickening self pity, and disgusting bravado. Nicholas Day – who plays the evil abuser – has done SUCH a good job of creating a monster. What a fabulous actor he is.

And then Aaron pummelled Anthony to a pulp. We weren’t even sorry.

    But did he kill him?

Did Aaron really kill Anthony? (Credit: ITV)
Aaron thinks he did it, but we don’t! (Credit: ITV)

Emmerdale review: We don’t think Aaron did it

We are pretty sure Aaron is not the killer. (Mind you, we were absolutely sure that Nate had been killed in the barn fire so we’re not always right!)

Obviously, Aaron thinks he’s the killer and we’re supposed to think he’s the killer, but is he, though? We’re not sure.

Ruby was making some fairly suspicious faces when anyone mentioned her dad – though that could just be her worries about Steph.

And speaking of Steph, could she have been the one to kill Anthony? What if she overheard his grim confession to Aaron? Her desperate hunt for him makes a lot of sense if she came back to deal with the body only to find it gone!

Or maybe it was Jai. Yes of course that’s ridiculous, but he’s got a dark side! And he needs something to do…

Superhero John saved Aaron's skin (Credit: ITV)
John was extremely calm in this crisis (Credit: ITV)

We’re still intrigued by John in our Emmerdale review

Speaking of dealing with dead bodies, how calm was John when confronted by Aaron’s dastardly deed? He simply picked up his keys and headed off to sort it out.

We don’t care how many years he spent in the army – surely no one with a normal backstory is that chill about getting rid of a corpse? There’s definitely a lot we don’t know about Mr Sugden. Could he even have killed Anthony himself? What if he’s the latest Dales serial killer?!

Dawn finds Joe out cold in his car

    WHAT is wrong with Joe?

Another intrigue this week is Joe’s extreme health issues. Does he need something from Noah? A kidney? Bone marrow? Something else?! Or is he really an addict like Dawn thinks?

Anyway we want to know what he’s up to and we are not the only ones because…

Kim's laptop screen as she listens to Joe's conversation
Kim’s listening into Joe’s conversations! (Credit: ITV)

    KIM IS BACK!

Of course she is! Grieving or not, we KNEW Kim wouldn’t be taking any nonsense from Mr Tate. She’s only gone and bugged his room! Now she knows he’s up to something. And she is surely about to twig what all those slurping noises were as he and Dawn snogged the faces of each other.

But who’s Joe talking to? What did he mean when he said the thing he didn’t want to happen had happened? Did he mean Dawn finding him out cold? And why doesn’t he want anyone to know he’s ill? We’re desperate to know more!

Who was Joe on the phone to? All the theories as Kim bugs his room

Last night’s episode of Emmerdale saw Joe Tate making a secretive phone call as he struggled with his demons and mysterious health issues. This came as his apparent painkiller addiction took its toll.

Dawn was shocked to find Joe passed out in his car (haphazardly parked up in a ditch) with a bottle of pills at his side. He later revealed that he’s been struggling with an addiction to painkillers – assuring her that he’d be seeking help for the problem.

He then slunk back into his bedroom, where he made a phone call to an unknown figure, revealing: “Hey… we’ve got a problem.”

Joe reveals hidden sickness as Kim listens in

Joe continued: “The thing that I didn’t want to happen… it happened. It’s just it’s getting a bit more obvious now. I don’t know how long I’ve got until people start noticing.”

Little did Joe know, but Kim was listening in on the conversation, having bugged his room. As she listened to the recording later, her eyebrow twitched at the revelation, her curiosity piqued.

But who was Joe on the phone to?

Who was Joe on the phone to? All the Emmerdale fan theories so far

As the scenes aired, fans took to social media to share their thoughts on Joe’s mystery caller. The most obvious candidate being a doctor, related to whatever illness is clearly behind Joe’s reliance on painkillers.

“Joe is definitely sick in some way, guessing that was his private doctor on the phone,” wrote one fan.

“Looks like Joe has a mystery illness and will need a transplant and that’s why he wants to get close to Noah,” said another.

But is the answer really that simple?

    Graham Foster in Emmerdale

Fans are convinced Graham is alive still

Another theory is that Jamie could be in league with former mentor and father figure Graham Foster. Graham was killed after a fatal run-in with Pierce, but that hasn’t stopped viewers from hoping the fan favourite could be alive.

“I have been convinced graham isn’t dead since he died,” wrote one fan.

Lending credence to this theory is all the talk of Graham of late… plus the framed photo of them both in Joe’s bedroom.

    Jamie Tate…. or Graham again

Another popular idea is that Joe could be working with devious uncle Jamie Tate. Viewers have been looking out for Jamie’s return ever since he faked his death in 2021 – with viewers convinced he’s been behind every bad thing that’s happened to Kim over the years.

“With Joe, I think he’s colluding with an undead Graham, if not Jamie. Kim will find out. 🫢” another fan predicted.

    Is Jamie’s return finally afoot?

  • Where is Nicholas Day now? Anthony actor has left Emmerdale and returned to the stage

Where is Nicholas Day now? Anthony actor has left Emmerdale and returned to the stage

Last night’s episode of Emmerdale saw Anthony killed in retribution for his abuse of daughter Ruby – marking an exit from the soap for actor Nicholas Day.

Anthony copped a vicious beating after provoking Aaron Dingle, his abuse of Ruby bringing back some painful memories for the young mechanic. Deciding he’d rather be dead than behind bars, Anthony’s venom scored him a brutal beating, leaving him broken and bleeding on the floor of the depot.

Returning to the scene of the crime, Aaron and John found that Anthony had died in the interim, leaving Aaron holding the bag, and with a body to clean up for John. Anthony’s story is far from done, but Nicholas Day’s time in the soap seems done.

    But where is Nicholas now?

Where is Emmerdale actor Nicholas Day, following Anthony exit?

Nicholas is currently starring in the play A Man For All Seasons, alongside George Gently star Martin Shaw. The show is currently playing at Theatre Royal Bath until January 25, before touring in Chichester, Malvern, Cheltenham, Oxford, Guildford, Canterbury, and London Richmond.

This new version of Robert Bolt’s play tracks the fallout as Henry VIII demands a divorce from wife Catherine of Aaragon (divorced) so that he can move on to new girl Anne Boleyn (beheaded) – putting the devout Thomas More (Martin Shaw) in a compromising situation.

Now-former Anthony Fox star Nicholas plays Cardinal Wolsey – clashing with the King after failing to deliver his divorce.

Beth Cordingly issues plea to fans following Anthony exit

Meanwhile, screen daughter Beth Cordingly has reached out to fans following Nicholas’s exit from the soap, describing the star as a ‘gem.’

Writing on her Instagram page yesterday, Beth wrote: “In case anyone is under any illusions I just want to stress what a beautiful man Nick Day is, in real life. We were very lucky to have an actor of his calibre and talent playing my father, Anthony, in Emmerdale.”

She continued: “It wasn’t an easy role for anyone to take on and he found playing this person extremely challenging. I loved working with Nick, we all did. It was an emotional experience requiring a lot of trust and a lot of love. He’s a gem.”

She finished with a plea for viewers to be kind… and not mistake fiction for reality. “If you see him in the street please remember he’s NOT Anthony. I’m sure you all will – so forgive me for sounding patronising – I just wanted to say. Sometimes, as actors, we need a little bit of protection when we put ourselves out there telling difficult stories that need to be told.”

Ruby ‘killed her dad and Caleb covered it up’ – all the clues they were behind Anthony’s death in Emmerdale

In Emmerdale Anthony’s murder has been taking centre stage this week after Ruby confronted her dad over his abuse last week. And while last night showed what happened, many think it wasn’t the full story.

In last night’s episode, Aaron went to the Depot to confront Anthony. And it got ugly. After Aaron opened up on his own experiences, the vile man not only admitted what had happened, but disgustingly goaded him into beating him up.

However, Aaron stopped himself while Anthony was still alive. And while he tried to make Aaron kill him, the Dingle bad boy chose to walk away. But when he and John returned later, Anthony was dead.

    Emmerdale Anthony murder

Aaron immediately panicked at the thought of going to prison, but John stepped in to cover up Anthony’s murder.

However, we didn’t actually see Anthony die. And that usually means something in Soapland. Now, fans seem to think they have cracked the case.

There was plenty of time between Aaron telling John what happened to them heading there together. Enough time for someone to actually kill Anthony.

Fans couldn’t help but notice Ruby’s behaviour switch during that time. She went out looking for Steph and returned even more shaken than before.

Then when Caleb headed to the Depot, he looked genuinely surprised to see it empty.

Fans took to social media to share their theories. And believe that Ruby was the culprit and Caleb was covering for her.

Did Ruby kill her dad in Emmerdale?

One wrote: “My money is on Ruby. The gun was in her house and Caleb had told her it was untraceable. She was very calm talking to Steph. As if she knows Anthony is not coming back and Steph is safe out of his hands.”

Another added: “Caleb going into the Depot with his eyes searching the floor like he was expecting to see something. He had gone to clean up for Ruby hadn’t he?”

“So, did Ruby go up to the Depot and finish off her dad? She looked a bit suspicious when she came back. And she seemed genuinely surprised when Caleb came back and didn’t say anything.”

But now, Aaron is under the impression that he is a murderer, so the question is – is he? Or was it actually someone else?

If he isn’t responsible for the Emmerdale Anthony death, then there are currently a lot of people in the village who think they have something to do with it.

  • Anthony ‘still alive’ in Emmerdale, new fan theory predicts

Anthony ‘still alive’ in Emmerdale, new fan theory predicts

A new fan theory has predicted that resident Emmerdale monster Anthony Fox is still alive. His death last night (Thursday, January 23) seemed fairly definitive – being beaten to a pulp by Aaron and found dead when he and John returned to the scene of the crime.

Whether Aaron actually delivered the killing blow may be debatable, but he’s definitely dead… or is he?

What we do know is that John and Aaron returned to the depot, where army medic pronounced Anthony dead at the scene. After promising to clean up the mess, John sent Aaron on his merry way. He then set about disposing of the body and cleaning up the crime scene, like nothing had ever happened (one solitary tooth aside).

    But is Anthony really dead?

    John looks serious on Emmerdale

Anthony is ‘still alive’ suggests Emmerdale fan

Writing on Reddit as last night’s episode aired, one fan wondered whether Anthony might have still been alive as John examined the body – and he then let him go after Aaron had scarpered.

“I think John let him go,” wrote one fan on a Reddit thread.

“I don’t think it was down to Aaron. Whenever there is an off screen death, there is a reason for it,” another said. Could that reason be that Anthony isn’t as dead as we think he is?

“Hard to imagine they would make Aaron a killer, though as it’s a soap they will likely allow him to think he killed Anthony for a while,” said a third.

Whatever the case may be, John’s behaviour was a little-too laid back, given the situation. “Sure John has done this before “in the army” 😉” winked one fan, hinting at ulterior motives for the still-mysterious Sugden brother.

What has John done with Anthony?

Anthony dead on the floor in Emmerdale
He looks pretty dead… (Credit: ITV)

    Did Aaron really kill Anthony?

Regardless of whether he’s dead or not (and with John apparently hiding the body in the back of his van, we’re betting so), Aaron looks to be holding the bag.

However, Anthony was alive when Aaron left him – meaning that someone could have snuck in to finish off the job. Everyone last night was acting suspiciously, from a jittery Ruby to an uncharacteristically pleasant Steph.

Caleb, meanwhile, almost seemed surprised when he saw how clean the depot was – suggesting he could have stumbled across a beat-up Anthony earlier in the day. And then there’s John, who seemed far too cool and collected for the situation at hand.

Did Aaron really kill Anthony in Emmerdale? All the clues he’s not the killer – and who is

Tonight’s episode of Emmerdale seemed to indicate that Aaron Dingle had killed Anthony. This came after Aaron confronted Anthony, demanding answers over his abuse of Ruby. Faced with Aaron’s demands that he hand himself in to the police, Anthony decided to poke the bear instead – rather be punched to death than die behind bars as a rapist, right?

Aaron walked away at the last minute, but the damage was done…. and John and Aaron returned to the scene of the crime to find Anthony lying there dead. But did Aaron really kill him?

While Anthony’s murder might seem like a cut-and-dry case of death by Dingle, something doesn’t quite add up to us. Aaron gave the old man quite the pasting, but was it enough to kill him?

While Aaron’s claiming culpability for his death, there’s plenty of room for another to have snuck in after he left and finished the job. And, with multiple parties acting strangely as the episode ended, the mystery is far from over.

Here’s our pick of who might have really killed Anthony.

    Ruby made an odd comment

As the episode ended, Steph finally opened up to Ruby – although she stopped short of revealing what her dad had done to her. As the two women settled their differences with hug, Ruby assured her daughter that there was ‘nothing’ she wouldn’t do to protect her daughter.

Nothing, eh – like killing predatory monster Anthony, for example?

    Caleb had unfinished business

As Anthony’s week from hell began, Caleb took his father-in-law aside for a chat and a game of Russian roulette. Caleb was set on killing Anthony until Cain arrived – allowing the old man to slip away.

And, as he arrived at the depot in the wake of Anthony’s beating, Caleb seemed surprised at how clean the place looked. Had he dipped back into the office to clean up his tracks?

John helped Aaron cover up his attack on Anthony in Emmerdale

With Aaron panicking in the aftermath of the attack, supportive boyfriend John was quick to step up and help cover up Anthony’s death. A little too quick, perhaps?

John leapt to action without hesitation, cleaning the crime scene and then disposing of the body (aside from one pesky tooth). Unflappable John seemed to take the whole thing in his stride, leading us to wonder whether he was the one who delivered the killing blow. A sneaky way to ingratiate himself with Aaron, maybe?

Cain’s got some making up to do

Interrupting his showdown with Anthony, Cain was there in his brother’s time of need. While slimy Anthony ultimately slipped away, Cain offered to help Caleb disappear his father-in-law properly.

And, later, he sidled up to Caleb reminding him that he’d always be there to provide an alibi or bit of support in his time of need. Could Cain have tried to ease a guilty conscience by murdering Anthony on Caleb’s behalf?

Laurel and Nicola panicked as Aaron confronted Anthony on Emmerdale

As John set about cleaning up Aaron’s mess, Nicola and Laurel were in a tizz over their attack on Anthony. While Laurel fretted at home, Nicola headed to the hospital to see whether he’d been admitted.

Anthony seemed to have taken the bash to the bonce like a champ, but could a delayed brain bleed taken effect, killing him after the fact?

    Steph was all smiles

Doting granddaughter Steph oscillated between being concerned for Anthony and – when not flirting with Ross again – feeling reconciliatory towards her mum. This was wildly out of character for Steph, who’s spent the last few weeks being nothing short of atrocious to poor Ruby.

Aware that her granddad was headed to the depo, could Steph have swung by just in time to hear his confession and foul words to Aaron? And, if so, did she sneak in to finish the old man off?

  • What’s really wrong with Joe in Emmerdale? Painkiller addiction a blatant cover-up – OPINION

What’s really wrong with Joe in Emmerdale? Painkiller addiction a blatant cover-up – OPINION

He’s been covering something up for a while now, but tonight’s episode of Emmerdale seemed to confirm that there’s something seriously wrong with Joe Tate… but is it the painkiller addiction? As he continued to struggle with an apparent addiction to pills, Dawn found him passed out in his car.

Confronting him with the bottle of pills she found at his side, Dawn demanded answers. And Joe was in a state, clearly in no fit state to drive home. But is the painkiller addiction Joe’s real addiction? We think not, and a later phone call seemed to confirm that he’s hiding something else.

    What’s wrong with Joe?

Joe’s sick in Emmerdale – and it’s not the painkiller problem

Sobered up, he made his excuses to Dawn, telling her that he was ashamed, but ultimately getting help for his painkiller addiction. He then snuck off, alone, into a secluded room where he made a furtive phone call.

“Hey… we’ve got a problem,” he said to the mystery figure on the other end of the line.

“The thing that I didn’t want to happen… it happened. It’s just it’s getting a bit more obvious now. I don’t know how long I’ve got until people start noticing.”

While this could have been Joe discussing the more unpleasant side-effects of a painkiller addiction, it’s more likely that Joe’s drug dependance is down to a deeper issue… and that he’s clearly covering up with his lies to Dawn.

Joe’s lying about his painkiller addiction – but what does he want from Noah?

When not hooking up with Dawn or downing drugs, Joe has spent a lot of effort trying to get into half-brother Noah’s good books. This has led some viewers to speculate that he might be suffering from kidney failure… which is where Noah comes in.

“Joe wants an organ off Noah,” wrote one fan on X last night.

“Bet Joe is buttering up Noah because he’s in need of an organ donor,” said another.

“Think Joe has kidney failure,” suggested a third.

Gifting Noah a watch from their father, the late Chris Tate, Joe is keen to get Noah on side for… something. The popular theory is an organ or liver transplant, but there’s always a chance he could be genuine in his desire to make things right.

Especially if, as another fan theory goes, Joe is dying. After all, his complexion in tonight’s episode wasn’t exactly that of a well man.

Organ failure? a brain tumour like his dad’s? Issues related to the bang on the head he took as he left the village the first time around? Joe’s covering for something – and it’s only a matter of time before the truth is revealed.

    Kim’s onto Joe

What Joe doesn’t know is that Kim is now aware of his issues, having recorded his private conversation.

And, knowing Kim Tate as we do, it’s surely only a matter of time before she gets to the truth of the matter.

  • Emmerdale star Beth Cordingly reaches out to fans over Anthony actor Nicholas Day: ‘We all need a little bit of protection’

Emmerdale star Beth Cordingly reaches out to fans over Anthony actor Nicholas Day: ‘We all need a little bit of protection’

Emmerdale actress Beth Cordingly has reached out to fans on social media over Nicholas Day, the actor playing her dad, Anthony Fox.

Viewers know Anthony is a vile man who sexually abused Ruby when she was just 14. His rapes resulted in the birth of her daughter Steph when she was 16.

But in real life, Beth insists Nicholas is a “gem”.

Emmerdale star Beth Cordingly issues message to fans on social media over Anthony actor Nicholas Day

Writing on her Instagram page, Beth addressed her followers. She said: “In case anyone is under any illusions I just want to stress what a beautiful man Nick Day is, in real life. We were very lucky to have an actor of his calibre and talent playing my father, Anthony, in Emmerdale.”

The actress then continued: “It wasn’t an easy role for anyone to take on and he found playing this person extremely challenging.

“I loved working with Nick, we all did. It was an emotional experience requiring a lot of trust and a lot of love. He’s a gem.”

The Ruby Fox-Miligan star urged her followers to be kind. “If you see him in the street please remember he’s NOT Anthony. I’m sure you all will – so forgive me for sounding patronising – I just wanted to say. Sometimes, as actors, we need a little bit of protection when we put ourselves out there telling difficult stories that need to be told.”

Fans and other co-stars were quick to agree with Beth, with Amy Walsh (Tracy Robinson) commenting: “Ah, what a gent! I had the honour of a couple of scenes with him! Lovely man.”

A fan wrote: “He really did play his part well, right down to the crazed look in his eyes in some scenes, I’d love to see him in a Shakespeare play, think he’d be awesome in one.”

“If an actor is really hated you know they’ve played a blinder… it’s a very powerful storyline which made my skin crawl…. He’s fantastic! I hope people remember he’s only acting the part… you both deserve an award,” agreed another one.

One more added: “So nice of you to say this. I echo what many have said. I hated Anthony, he made my skin crawl. Proving what a fantastic and brave actor Nick Day is, it can’t be easy to play a character like this. Another hard hitting storyline done well by Emmerdale.”

Praise for Emmerdale’s Beth Cordingly and Nicholas Day

In fact, both Beth and Nicholas have come in for huge praise during this hard-hitting storyline. Nicholas has created one of the most vile villains ever to grace our screens.

And the scenes in which Ruby confronted her dad left fans in no doubt what a star Beth is.

One fan wrote: “Beth Cordingly is a phenomenal talent. ITV are so lucky to have her as Ruby!”

Another praised: “Beth Cordingly is award-worthy on Emmerdale this week. May Ruby remain at the centre of the show forever.”

“Give Beth Cordingly all of the awards. This is a very dark, dark storyline, even for a soap. And she has been amazing,” another fan commented.

  • Who should Anthony’s killer be? Why some fans are desperate for it to be Steph

Who should Anthony’s killer be? Why some fans are desperate for it to be Steph

It’s been a long time coming – and tonight’s episode of Emmerdale will reveal who is Anthony Fox‘s killer. And there’s a long-line up of potential suspects, from vengeful son-in-law Caleb, to traumatised daughter Ruby and even Aaron Dingle, who suffered similar trauma himself. Meanwhile, a portion of the fanbase are hoping that it might be Steph who delivers the killing blow… or bullet.

Steph has been her grandfather’s most staunch defender, no matter the detriment to her poor mum’s mental health. Since arriving in the village, she’s pushed for Ruby to make nice with Anthony, unaware of the real reason for Ruby’s hurt.

Last night’s episode (Wednesday, January 22) saw Anthony squirm out of trouble as Caleb confronted him with a gun, scarpering as Cain arrived on the scene. He was then cornered by Aaron Dingle, and the outlook isn’t good.

With Anthony’s body set to be found tonight, he’s not long for the world. But who will kill Anthony? Could it be Steph?

Steph should be Anthony Fox’s killer, Emmerdale fans demand

Sharing a wish-list of potential killers, a number of viewers insisted that Steph should be the one to kill Anthony – reasoning that it would make more sense than rumoured culprit Aaron.

“Personally I would prefer to see Steph as the killer. I don’t think Aaron has it in him especially after Robert,” wrote one fan.

“If Steph isn’t the one to shoot Anthony, then what is the point?” asked another.

Meanwhile, a third suggested that the emotion Anthony’s potential confession might evoke in Steph could be ‘nuclear.’ Might Steph overhear talk of Anthony’s crimes and kill her grandfather?

“Don’t forget Anthony dialled Steph’s mobile number from one of the depot’s office phones. He didn’t actually end that call. Aaron came in and said about having a chat. If the call connected, Steph heard the whole vile truth. The emotion that’d evoke in her. Nuclear,”

“I think Steph should kill him!” another wrote.

Emmerdale spoilers tonight: Anthony’s body is found

In Emmerdale spoilers tonight (Thursday, January 23), Anthony’s dead body is found. But who killed him?
