Emmerdale Christmas births and deaths – unexpected arrivals and dramatic departures

Births and deaths have been the theme for many a Christmas in Emmerdale. It’s a favourite time of year to welcome new life into the village, as well as killing off other characters.

Take last festive season for example. It saw the birth of Dawn and Billy Fletcher‘s son, Evan, then just days later, gangster Damon Harris was shot dead by Charity Dingle.  And it’s not a new tradition either – the soap had its first Christmas Day baby back in 1998, and its first festive fatality over 30 years ago.

Here’s a full run down of all the Emmerdale hatches and dispatches that have happened at Christmas.

    Emmerdale Christmas births: Belle Dingle

For Christmas 1998 Emmerdale gave fans the best surprise present – baby Belle Dingle.

But it wasn’t only the viewers who were shocked by the tot’s unexpected arrival. Mum Lisa Dingle didn’t even realise she was pregnant before her contractions kicked in while she was tending to one of the family’s poorly pigs.

Thankfully she wasn’t alone. Vet Paddy Kirk was by Lisa’s side and helped deliver Belle into the world. Paddy rushed back into Wishing Well and summoned the family outside. And there, lying in a manger (well, a pigsty) was Lisa cradling her newborn daughter.

Stunned Zak was lost for words at the sight of his seventh child and fainted on the spot!

    Gabby Thomas

Bernice might look like a picture of serenity, cradling her newborn daughter Gabby, but there was a lot of angst and drama surrounding the tot’s arrival into the world.

The Woolpack landlady went into labour on the morning of Christmas Day during a row with her estranged husband Reverend Ashley Thomas. Their marriage was in crisis after Bernice had admitted to an affair with Spanish chef Carlos Diaz.

Unsure whose child she was carrying, Bernice allowed Ashley to accompany her to the hospital, but also requested Carlos’s presence there. As Bernice’s contractions intensified in the delivery suite, outside things were kicking off. Nicola took a swing at Carlos, while Bernice’s parents Rodney and Diane were tearing strips off one another.

Little Gabby was born that same day. Bernice was over the moon, as were the two potential fathers. A DNA test later confirmed Gabby was Ashley’s and Carlos quit the village not long after.

    Emmerdale Christmas births: Evan Fletcher

Christmas came early for Dawn and Billy Fletcher with the birth of their beautiful baby boy, Evan.

Dawn went into labour on December 21, 2023 in the middle of the village Christmas fair. Billy was elsewhere, so Dawn had to lean on enemy Aaron Dingle for support as her contractions kicked in. Although to be fair to Aaron, he did a good job given the awkward circumstances.

The mum-to-be made it back to Home Farm in time to have the water birth she’d been longing for. Billy was by Dawn’s side as she delivered a son, who they named Evan, after his paternal grandfather.

The first year of Evan’s life has been a highly traumatic one after the tot was diagnosed with leukemia. But the brave little soul has proved what a fighter he is and even came home in time for Christmas.

    Emmerdale Christmas deaths: Leonard Kempinski

The Emmerdale plane crash, also known as the Beckindale air disaster, marked a huge turning point in the soap’s history. The episode aired on December 30, 1993 and was watched by an audience of 18 million – its highest ever viewing figures.

The village was partly destroyed when an airliner crashed into the surrounding countryside. Farmer Joe Sugden was driving his mum Annie Sugden and her husband Leonard Kempinski to the airport when he had to swerve the car to avoid debris from the doomed plane. The impact of the crash killed Leonard, and left Annie in a coma for three months.

Leonard wasn’t the only local to lose his life that night. The plane crash also claimed three others – Elizabeth Pollard (Eric’s second wife), Zoe Tate’s former boyfriend Archie Brooks and local father Mark Hughes.

It also left Home Farm heir Chris Tate with life-changing injuries that resulted in him being wheelchair-bound for the rest of his life.

Dave Glover died at Christmas in Emmerdale

    Emmerdale Christmas deaths: Dave Glover

Dave played with fire by sleeping with lady of the manor Kim Tate. And he ended up getting burnt. Very badly.

Kim and the handsome farmhand had an on/off affair behind her husband Frank’s back for two years. When Kim discovered she was pregnant in December 1995 she didn’t know who the father was. She loved Dave, but when Frank offered her a million pounds to ditch her lover, and put his name on the birth certificate, Kim chose the cash.

Baby James was born the following year, and a DNA test later confirmed he was Frank’s. Despite all this, Kim couldn’t give up Dave, and vice versa. The duo decided they’d run away and start a new life together, but never made it that far.

On Christmas Day 1996, a fire broke out in James’s nursery at Home Farm. Dave battled through the flames to save the tot and was able to pass him through a window, but he wasn’t so lucky. He made it to hospital, but died from his injuries the following day.

    Emmerdale Christmas deaths: Vic Windsor

Christmas Day 1998 marked Belle Dingle’s first on earth, and postmaster Vic Windsor’s last.

The much-loved character was killed off in an armed robbery, carried out by Andy Sugden‘s jailbird dad, Billy Hopwood. The crook needed money for his new planned life abroad with Andy and decided to burgle the Post Office on its quietest day of the year. But he didn’t bank on Vic catching him red-handed.

The crook was armed with a shotgun and threatened to pull the trigger on Vic. A tussle ensued, Vic went crashing into a set of shelves and was fatally injured. He pleaded with Billy to call for help, but the thief scarpered, leaving Vic to die alone.

11.1 million heartbroken fans watched his passing and mourned his loss.

    Ray Mullen

Evil stalker Ray Mullen met a grisly end on Boxing Day 2003, but we can’t say he didn’t deserve it.

The creepy businessman was the boyfriend of Woolpack landlady Louise Appleton. But what she didn’t realise was that he was also her stalker. For months, Louise had been bombarded by threatening letters from a mystery tormenter. Having made Louise terrified for her safety, Ray then persuaded her to move away with him to Italy.

After saying their goodbyes, the couple made their getaway on Christmas Day. But enroute Louise realised what kind of monster Ray really was. She fought back and their car careered off the road. Ray was knocked out cold and Louise fled the scene. But her nightmare was far from over.

The drama continued on Boxing Day when Ray reappeared at Mill Cottage for a final, deadly showdown. The pair fought and Louise ended up killing Ray in an act of self defence. Her pal Terry Woods discovered the scene of carnage, and helped Louise make it look as if Ray had died by accident to avoid her getting charged.

It worked and Louise got away with murder.

    Emmerdale Christmas deaths: Tom King

As far as Emmerdale Christmas episodes go, Tom King’s festive murder in 2006 is one of the finest.

The King patriarch had just married gold-digging Rosemary Sinclair – much to the horror of his sons. The reception at Home Farm was in full swing, but the day was about to take a sinister turn.

Tom was upstairs when a shadowy figure entered his bedroom and attacked him with a bronze statue. Seconds later, Tom came crashing through the window in front of his horrified guests. He died of a broken neck.

His shocking murder sparked the soap’s biggest ever whodunit, with many of the locals in the frame. The investigation went on for months before Tom’s son Carl was unmasked as the killer.

    Matthew King

Matthew met his maker on December 16, 2008 – the day of his ill-fated wedding to Anna De Souza.

The shocking events unfolded after Matthew’s brother Carl crashed the nuptials at Home Farm. Carl informed Anna that Matthew had watched her dad Donald die weeks earlier and refused to help him.

Shattered by the revelation, Anna fled the ceremony, while Matthew and Carl had a furious punch up. Matthew then got behind the wheel of a white van and attempted to mow his brother down.

Carl jumped out of the way and Matthew swerved the vehicle to avoid hitting Anna, but crashed into a wall and was catapulted through the windscreen.

Although fatally injured, Matthew was able to tell Anna he loved her one last time before he died in her arms.

    Emmerdale Christmas deaths: Damon Harris

Last Christmas Charity Dingle became a killer when she accidentally shot gangster Damon ‘Harry’ Harris dead. And it was all Mackenzie Boyd‘s fault!

Mack had an affair with Harry’s daughter, Chloe. But when he dumped her to go back to Charity, Harry swore his revenge. He kidnapped Mack and held him hostage in a deserted warehouse. After torturing his victim, Harry plotted to kill Mack.

He pulled out a gun and was about to pull the trigger when Charity (who had tailed Harry to the warehouse) jumped in to protect her husband. In the scuffle the firearm went off and Harry took a bullet. He was instantly killed.

In the aftermath, Charity battled PTSD, which nearly led her to kill again when she stabbed Mack in a trauma-induced daze.

    Emmerdale Christmas deaths: Heath Hope

Emmerdale fans were left in shock after long-term character Heath Hope was killed off last New Year’s Eve.

Heath, his twin sister Cathy and their friend Angelica King were desperate to see in 2024 at a house party in Hotten. So the trio decided to steal nurse Wendy Posner’s car to drive to the venue. But tragedy struck enroute when the vehicle came off the road.

Heath’s dad Bob and Wendy came across the scene of the accident, and found injured Angelica and Cathy in a state of shock. But there was no saving poor Heath, whose lifeless body was slumped in the back seat. He was just 16.

Cathy initially took the blame for causing the crash, but it later transpired Angelica had been behind the wheel. She confessed and was sent to prison for causing death by dangerous driving.

  • Beth Cordingly shuts down Ruby and Cain affair storyline – and we’re very relieved

Beth Cordingly shuts down Ruby and Cain affair storyline – and we’re very relieved

Emmerdale star Beth Cordingly has said there is ‘no way’ that an affair will develop between Ruby and Cain – and we’re relieved!

Last month, Ruby Fox-Miligan slept with her brother-in-law Cain Dingle, with the pair agreeing to keep the fling a secret.

The storyline hasn’t pleased fans, but viewers will be happy to know that it won’t be developing into a full-blown affair.

Ruby cheats on Caleb with Cain

Last month, Cain struggled to cope while his wife Moira Dingle was undergoing surgery for a brain tumour.

In a special episode, Cain’s story was told in reverse chronological order. Viewers first saw him with bloodied hands while drinking whiskey.

As the clock went back further, viewers were shocked and annoyed when Cain and Ruby were shown putting their clothes on, while telling each other that no one should ever find out about what they’d done.

The following day, Caleb Miligan found a box of emergency contraception in the bin (You could have hidden it better, Ruby!) Fortunately for Ruby, Caleb was convinced it belonged to daughter Steph, so Cain and Ruby’s secret remains a secret, for now.

Ruby will not be embarking on an affair (Credit: ITV)

    Beth Cordingly speaks out

Emmerdale star Beth Cordingly has said her character Ruby will not be having an affair with Cain.

Speaking to Inside Soap magazine, Beth said there was ‘no way’ an affair would develop between the pair. She added: ‘[The one-night stand] was two people pressing the self-destruct button, who both just happened to be there, and they probably regretted it as it was happening.

‘Whenever I bump into Jeff [Hordley, who plays Cain] or Nat [J Robb, who plays Moira], I’m like, “Has Moira found out yet?” as if it’s real. I’m dreading it!’

The actress also opened up on the possibility of Ruby getting pregnant with Cain’s baby. She said: ‘Well, we saw Caleb find the morning after pill in the bin, didn’t we? So, we know Ruby’s taken it.

‘I suppose the thing about soap is that you have to keep throwing grenades into the scenario. When everyone’s happy and ticking along it’s boring, and no one wants to watch that!’

  • Leyla’s death storyline ‘revealed’ as reports detail sinking vehicle stunt

Leyla’s death storyline ‘revealed’ as reports detail sinking vehicle stunt

Emmerdale has reportedly filmed a huge stunt that will see three women, including Leyla Harding, fighting for their lives.

The Sun has revealed that three soap favourites will find themselves trapped in a car as it plunges into a frozen lake.

While the identity of the other two characters is not known, it was revealed earlier this year that Roxy Shahidi, who plays Leyla, will be leaving the soap. Could this be how she makes her dramatic exit?

    Leyla to leave Emmerdale

Earlier this year, a source told The Sun: “Roxy has adored her time on the soap and has made so many happy memories since first joining when she was 17.

“The cast have become like family to her and she has grown so much as an actress. But now feels like the perfect time to spread her wings and try something new.

“She is really excited about her meaty exit storyline, which will see her character Leyla die on screen. She’d rather go out in a blaze of glory and be remembered.”

There have been theories about how Leyla will leave the soap. Originally, some fans suspected that Tom could kill her.

More recently, fans have come up with another theory. With Emmerdale set to air a special A&E episode featuring Jacob being tested ‘professionally and personally’, fans suspect his mum will be one of his patients.

Leyla will soon be leaving the soap (Credit: ITV)

    Emmerdale planning big stunt

According to The Sun, terrifying scenes were filmed last week, which saw Leyla and two other women trapped in a car as it sunk into a frozen lake.

Sources have told the publication that Emmerdale pulled out all the stops. This included covering a field with candle wax in order to make it look like a frozen lake.

An insider told The Sun that bosses ‘want viewers to have their hearts in their mouths’ as the car slams into the lake.

They added: “It’s a nightmare scenario and everything was done to make sure this was a scene with real impact. Hours were spent creating a layer of ice. Then the actors spent hours out on the frozen field in the pitch black trying to do the storyline justice.”

  • Emmerdale fans ‘obsessed’ with Denise Welch’s character and want her to be ‘a regular’

Emmerdale fans ‘obsessed’ with Denise Welch’s character and want her to be ‘a regular’

In last night’s episode of Emmerdale (Thursday, December 19), Denise Welch made her appearance. And fans adored her.

When it was announced that Denise Welch would be appearing in Emmerdale for Tom’s court case, there was a lot of online chatter on what it would look like.

But it’s safe to say her character Heidi did not disappoint.

    Emmerdale Denise Welch appearance

Heidi was a member of the jury, and had the task of determining whether or not Tom was abusive. And in a unique format, Emmerdale actually showed us how the jury came to the decision.

Someone who was pivotal to the guilty verdict was in fact Heidi. From the very beginning she believed Belle’s story. And every time someone challenged her on it, she was determined to make them see the truth.

Throughout the episode of Emmerdale, Denise had some powerful lines to deliver, and fans were left demanding more.

Many took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to share their hopes for future appearances for the character.

One wrote: “Absolutely fantastic from Denise in Emmerdale. She should be brought in full time. Brilliant stuff.”

Another added: “Loving Denise Welch’s character in Emmerdale. She put it to the jury exactly how it is. Bring her back for more.”

Fans want to know Heidi’s backstory

A third penned: “Wasn’t sure how Denise would work in Emmerdale when I heard the news. But I am OBSESSED with her. I want to know Heidi’s backstory.”

That’s what a lot of fans agreed on. When Heidi spoke to her fellow jurors, it sounded like she had her own personal experiences with the subject.

While she said she knew about it because ‘I’m a woman,’ many fans believe there may be more to explore with her character.

We don’t know if there has been any talks behind the scenes about Denise making another Emmerdale appearance, but if she does, it doesn’t look like fans would mind.

Denise wasn’t the only surprise appearance for Tom’s trial, as actor Charles Dale was there too.

Fans rush to applaud Eden Taylor-Draper and James Chase as Tom’s comeuppance is aired

The Emmerdale cast is full of talented actors who are able to impress the viewers all through the year. But two actors in particular have been getting a heap of praise after last night’s episode (Thursday, December 19).

Eden Taylor-Draper and James Chase, who play Belle Dingle and Tom King, have been inundated with support and applauds from the audience as their domestic violence storyline came to an end.

Fans praise Eden and James’ performances on the soap (Credit: ITV)

James and Eden have played the storyline successfully

James made his debut on the soap in March 2023. Since then he has played the villainous Tom King exceptionally well, making viewers genuinely believe every word he said.

As for Eden, she has been a part of the Emmerdale cast since she was eight years old, and she never disappoints.

Together, the pair have created a lasting effect on the viewers, and their powerful performances will not be forgotten. And hopefully will win them very deserved awards.

Last night saw the jury find Tom guilty on all charges, and sentenced him to three years in prison. And while many believe that was too little, it’s unfortunately the harsh reality that Emmerdale were trying to portray.

After last night’s episode, many fans took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to applaud both actors for their performances.

Fans praise the Emmerdale cast members

One wrote: “Fair play to James for playing the character so so well. Every time Tom came on my screen, I wanted to throw my remote at the TV. Amazing work.”

Another added: “Never, ever thought I would cry at an episode of Emmerdale – but WOW! Coercive and domestic abuse storyline brilliantly played by Eden Taylor-Draper and James Chase. Hopefully, well deserved awards coming their way.”

A third penned: “Not one to usually tweet about soaps. But a fulfilling conclusion to an important storyline on Emmerdale. Eden and James have portrayed the characters and storyline incredibly well over the course of the year. Both of them are incredible actors.”

“Eden is out doing herself tonight – absolutely phenomenal. And James is delivering an amazingly evil manipulative performance by Tom. Well done to both. And well done Emmerdale for this storyline.”

With Tom in prison, we can only imagine that Belle is about to go on a whole other journey of recovering, and trying to look at the future. And we’re sure Eden will continue to do wonderfully.

As for James, Tom may have left the village, but he isn’t ruling out a potential return one day.

  • Justice has been served as Tom is finally locked up – but fans predict huge twist

Justice has been served as Tom is finally locked up – but fans predict huge twist

Tom finally faced his comeuppance in Emmerdale last night (Thursday, December 19), as the villain was found guilty for the torment he had put Belle through.

But it seems, fans are convinced we’ll see another huge twist play out.

After months of hoping that Tom will get sent to prison, Emmerdale fans finally got their wish. But he only got three years.

His sentence, mixed with good behaviour inside, means Tom could be back in the outside world in as little as 16 – 18 months. Which is a horrifying thought.

Fans fear Tom will return to Emmerdale

With that knowledge, fans are convinced we haven’t actually seen the end of Tom just yet.

After the episode aired, many fans took to social media to express their concern that he may make a future appearance.

One wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter): “I looked up the sentencing guidelines for coercive control. Maximum sentence is five years but the average is three. Parole is usually offered after half of the time is served. Tom King will be out in 18 months and will probably be seeking revenge.”

Another added: “My guess is in three years time when he is out he will come after Belle again and that will be a big Christmas storyline.”

A third penned: “So Tom will be out in about 18 months. Belle will be in great danger when that happens.”

    Belle takes the stand Emmerdale
Fans fear Belle will be in danger if Tom returns (Credit: ITV)

James Chase speaks out on potential Tom return

The fear from fans is understandable, especially as his actor James Chase hasn’t ruled out a return to the show.

Discussing his exit from the show, he confirmed he would be open to revisiting the character again in the future – but that it depends on the bosses.

He explained: “There are many different avenues they could go with it. They could make it that Tom potentially had got even worse, and hasn’t changed at all. Perhaps, he could hate Belle even more for it. Or if he did go the other way and finally did realise the terrible things he’s done, and perhaps did, actually start to try to become a better man.”

One thing James does believe, is that Tom will struggle being locked up. And he expects the character will ‘hit rock bottom.’

If Tom were to return to Emmerdale, we’re sure the Dingles would make sure he knows just how unwelcome he is.

Fans fume as Tom King is sentenced to three years in prison – did he deserve more?

In last night’s episode of Emmerdale, Tom finally got the comeuppance he deserved; prison. But his sentence length left fans quite upset.

For months Tom has been abusing Belle in harrowing scenes, and it finally came to an end yesterday.

In another unique episode, Emmerdale once again changed their format to showcase different points of views. Instead of the typical trial episodes, we got to see both Belle and Tom tell their own version of events, with conversations between the jury mixed in between.

And while fans were happy that we finally got to see the end of Tom, many were upset at the harsh reality of his sentence.

    Emmerdale Tom found guilty

Tom got sentenced to three years in prison. And after watching the abuse he put Belle through for a year, that doesn’t feel like a lot of time.

But Emmerdale stayed true to real life, and that is sadly the reality of a lot of domestic violence cases.

James Chase, who played the villain, spoke about his thoughts on Tom’s sentencing.

He said: “With good behaviour, he’s only going to get something like 16 to 18 months. Which is just crazy.”

This opens the question on just how much Tom will change in prison, especially if his time inside is so short.

James explained: “There are many different avenues. They could make it that Tom potentially had got even worse and hasn’t changed at all. Perhaps he will hate Belle even more for it. Or if he did go the other way and finally realise the terrible things he has done, and actually start to try to become a better man.”

Fans shared their outrage at Tom’s sentencing on social media.

One user commented on a Reddit thread: “I liked the episode but the sentence was poor.”

This sparked a comment by another user who responded: “It unfortunately illustrates how little men like Tom actually get. Sentencing around domestic abuse needs to be reformed.”

A third user penned: “Three years is way too short. But if they were going for reality, then this is it.”

Viewers on X (formerly Twitter) also shared the same view.

One wrote: “Three years is an absolute joke after what Belle went through. He should have gotten way longer.”

The sentence is Emmerdale’s way of ensuring they stay true to the storyline. And despite the annoyance, fans are all glad to see Tom go down.

  • Emmerdale is soap with the most Ofcom complaints in 2024 – and it’s mostly down to Tom abuse storyline

Emmerdale is soap with the most Ofcom complaints in 2024 – and it’s mostly down to Tom abuse storyline

Soaps are known to tackle hard-hitting storylines, and sometimes viewers think they may take things to far. But out of all the soaps, it was Emmerdale which received the most Ofcom complaints in 2024.

This isn’t Emmerdale’s first time getting a lot of complaints, but it is their highest amount ever.

And that’s all down to Tom King’s abuse.

Since earlier this year, Tom began emotionally and physically abusing Belle Dingle, in an ordeal that finally ended in yesterday’s episode (December 19).

While viewers were left disturbed over many scenes this year. It’s been reported that it was Tom’s treatment of their dog, Piper, that sparked many Ofcom complaints.

Emmerdale storyline that got the most Ofcom complaints

The sickening scenes saw Tom harm his dog in another attempt to bring Belle back under his control.

In an incredibly tough scene to watch, Tom stood over Piper with a syringe in his hand. He told the puppy: “Don’t worry. This is going to hurt me more than it hurts you. Then again, maybe not.”

The cameras then cut away before we could see anything else. But Piper could be heard whimpering off-screen.

It’s now been revealed by Ofcom that those scenes gained Emmerdale the Number 5 spot on the Top 10 most complained about moments this year.

A total of 1,193 Ofcom complaints were made. But it looked like far more than that voiced their disgust on social media. So much so that Emmerdale had to clarify the pup was not actually harmed.

Taking to their own social media, Emmerdale shared: “These scenes can be distressing to watch, but we want to remind you that Minnie (AKA Piper) is a very good actor and is always living her best life on set!

“We can confirm that no harm has come to her whatsoever.”

    Ofcom’s response

Not only did Tom injure the dog, but he also let Belle believe she died, even faking a burial for the pooch.

In response to the complaints, Ofcom responded with how they dealt with the investigation.

They acknowledged the scenes were ‘an uncomfortable watch,’ but added that ‘no graphic detail of animal abuse was shown’ and ‘Tom’s actions were not portrayed in a positive light.’

Ofcom added: “We also took into account that this long-running storyline depicting coercive control in a relationship would have been within audience expectations of this soap, which often tackles challenging themes and issues.”

Belle finally got the justice she deserved last night, as Tom was found guilty on all charges against him. And the villain got sentenced to three years behind bars.

And while Belle faces a journey of healing, that will be made a little bit easier when she is reunited with Piper this Christmas. We can’t wait to see Piper again!

  • Emmerdale to air at 7pm tonight in schedule shakeup

Emmerdale to air at 7pm tonight in schedule shakeup

Emmerdale has been hit with a slight change to the schedule and will now air at an earlier time tonight (Friday, December 20).

As Christmas approaches, we can expect to see some further soap schedule changes throughout the week.

Tonight, viewers can still catch their latest fix of Emmerdale but just half an hour earlier than usual.

Emmerdale to air at 7pm tonight

We all know by now that Emmerdale usually airs at 7.30pm and has done for quite some time. However, tonight will see the soap go back to the good ol’ days and air at 7pm.

This change will be temporary though, so don’t get used to it. The episode will air from 7pm-7.30pm, with Coronation Street following at 7.30pm-8.30pm.

This is to make room for an episode of Vera which will run from 8.30pm-10.15pm. Rather lengthy!

For those who don’t want to wait until tonight (and we don’t blame you!), then tonight’s episode is already available on ITVX and has been since 7am this morning. What are you waiting for? Turn it on!

What to expect from tonight’s episode of Emmerdale

After last night’s (Thursday, December 19) guilty verdict for Tom, Belle will most likely be trying to process the events of the last year or so.

Elsewhere, everything that went down with Tom has clearly impacted Amelia as she decides to have a fresh start and leave the village. And, this sees the brief (and very brief) return of former character Daz Spencer as Amelia goes off to live with him.

And, the drama doesn’t stop there! Almost one year on from his death, Heath is remembered by his loved ones as they pay tribute to him. How has it nearly been a year already?!
