Tom King has left Emmerdale, but actor James Chase reveals it might not be for good

Tom King has been found guilty of assaulting and coercively controlling wife Belle Dingle in Emmerdale. He is off to prison for three years.

James Chase, who plays Tom, has left the soap – but he hasn’t ruled out a future return.

Tom King goes to prison in Emmerdale

After tense trial scenes on Thursday night (December 19) Tom was found guilty by the jury and given a sentence of three years in prison. Belle sobbed as he was lead away from court and they shared a final look.

Actor James Chase has now left Emmerdale and has spoken out about Tom’s ending.

He said: “It would have been understandable if the story had ended up with Cain taking matters into his own hands, but this way offers more closure.

“I’m glad we didn’t go down [the Cain killer] route as in some way, I think it would have been stooping to a level similar to Tom if they had done that. So I think it’s better that it went down the law abiding route with it. It keeps Belle clear and she keeps her innocence, and she doesn’t become pessimistic like he is.”

Not the end of Tom in Emmerdale?

However James also revealed that because Tom’s sentence is quite a short one, but sadly realistic, he would be open to revisiting the character or the story further down the line.

“I think, with good behaviour, he’s only going to get something like 16 to 18 months, which is crazy,” James said.

“But I think it would depend where they would want to go with the character, because there are many different avenues you could go with it. They could make it that Tom potentially had got even worse, and hasn’t changed at all. Perhaps, he could hate Belle even more for it.

“Or if he did go the other way and finally did realise the terrible things he’s done, and perhaps did, actually start to try to become a better man.”

    A changed man?

But can a leopard really change its spots? James reckons prison might be the only way for him to admit who he really is.

“I think he’ll struggle being in prison, definitely,” the actor said. “But I think through that struggle, it will humble him, and he’ll hit rock bottom.”

“I think it could be the best thing for him, because of how tough it’s going to be for him inside. It may make him come out, having realised what he’s done and not take things for granted.”

So could a reformed Tom make a return? Or a vengeful one wanting to have the final say?

  • Has Tom FINALLY left Emmerdale for good? We have answers after jury delivers their verdict

Has Tom FINALLY left Emmerdale for good? We have answers after jury delivers their verdict

Tom King has been found guilty of abusing wife Belle Dingle in Emmerdale and sent to prison for three years. It’s the end of what has been a very real, but very long storyline.

And while it looks like Tom has gone for good, no one would blame fans for wondering if that was the case. After all, we’ve been teased plenty of times before that Tom would be no more. He’s survived multiple near-fatal incidents including being electrocuted and stabbed in the back with an axe by Belle. Plus fans thought Tom had gone for good when he was caught trying to escape and sent to prison.

However, this time, it looks like there’s no getting away from it: Tom is going to jail. So is this the last we will see of Tom King? Has he left Emmerdale for good at last?

    What happened in Emmerdale tonight

In another format-breaking episode, that Emmerdale has become well-known for, tonight’s scenes flipped between the evidence being given in court and the jury deliberating their verdict.

Although the jury consisted of 12 people there were three particularly vocal ones: foreman Karl, played by Charles Dale, Heidi, played by Denise Welch and Kenneth, played by Jack Ellis.

Karl was very much Team Tom in the beginning, using all of Belle’s past deeds against her to paint her as unstable. In fairness, Tom did give a very convincing performance in court.

Heidi, however, knew the signs and knew Tom was guilty as sin. Kenneth stayed quiet as the two locked horns, but eventually piped up and revealed a personal experience with an abuser that made him doubt Tom and realise Belle was being truthful. He said he could see the look of sheer terror in her eyes.

After it looked like things were going Tom’s way, the vote suddenly swung in Belle’s favour and the jury reached the unanimous verdict Tom was guilty. Hallelujah!

Has Tom left Emmerdale for good?

It’s music to our ears: Yes, this is the last we will see of Tom King. Emmerdale Insider reached out to the soap who confirmed the news.

At last the village is free of the evil that is Tom. His last trick has failed. He was found guilty and will serve his time.

Whether in three years he gets out and comes back to terrorise Belle is another thing, but for now, she can sleep easy knowing he is behind bars. And we don’t have to see his smug face again!

Even better than that, Belle will be smiling again by Christmas when she is reunited with her beloved Piper. She realises Tom lied about the dog being dead and lovely Vinny, with Gabby’s help, tracks Piper down and returns her to Belle on Christmas Day.

All the tissues please, this is at last the justice she deserves.

  • A really chilling episode saw justice done, but it didn’t feel like quite the right ending for Tom King – OPINION

A really chilling episode saw justice done, but it didn’t feel like quite the right ending for Tom King – OPINION

Belle Dingle took on her abuser Tom King in court this week’s Emmerdale and saw him sent to prison. It was a chilling episode that really highlighted the truth about domestic abuse, and people’s attitudes towards it.

Tom’s trial was the end of a year-long storyline that has been carefully and thoughtfully plotted with a lot of shocking moments, as well as tearjerking parts.

But did the finale really do justice to the rest of the plot? We’re not completely sure.

    Tom in the dock

Was the ending of Tom King too rushed in Emmerdale?

The majority of the trial was in Thursday’s double episode. On paper, it looked that it would be plenty of time. But actually it felt rushed. The discussions with the jury were really interesting and we definitely felt engaged with the new characters we met. But we wanted to hear more.

Denise Welch’s character, Heidi, clearly had a backstory that we were desperate to hear more about. The debates threw new light on Belle’s ordeal. But suddenly, everything was resolved and Tom was found guilty – it felt like we’d only seen half of it.

We reckon Tom’s trial could even have stood up to running across a whole week’s worth of episodes. There is a fine line between giving a story the time it deserves and dragging it out, but this all felt wrapped up too quickly – Tom was only arrested a couple of weeks ago!

    Jurors in Tom King's trial
We really enjoyed the discussion between the jurors and we wanted more (Credit: ITV)

    Some of story missed out?

In a similar vein, it was fascinating to hear Tom and Belle’s take on various incidents, then have the jury discuss how they saw it. But it felt like lots of incidents were glossed over, or not even mentioned at all.

Which then gave the impression that Belle’s ordeal wasn’t that bad, that it was being vaguely downplayed – even though we’d watched it all and seen how she’d suffered.

    Belle Dingle
Belle’s ordeal is coming to an end (Credit: ITV)

    Belle wasn’t on trial

We understand how trials work – we know Tom’s creepy barrister Ollie had to plant reasonable doubt in the minds of the jury and convince them that perhaps Tom wasn’t guilty of everything he was accused of. And we also understand that one of the ways he was going to do that was by discrediting Belle.

BUT Belle wasn’t on trial. All the stuff about her history with Gemma seemed totally irrelevant. You know what would have been relevant, though? Tom stalking Chas and making her think she was losing her mind, back in 2013.

    The real-life stories

Soaps play such an important role in raising awareness when they tackle issue-based stories like this. This storyline has been managed so well and really highlighted the horror of coercive control. And we loved the idea of including real-life stories in the trial. But aside from the one story told by juror Kenneth, the stories were just stuck on at the end. It made them feel like an afterthought.

DS Foy was the hero of the hour when he arrested Tom. Shouldn’t he have been a witness?(Credit: ITV/Comp Emmerdale Insider)

Missing witnesses at the trial of Tom King in Emmerdale

Belle has come into contact with quite a few people throughout her ordeal who could have been witnesses for the prosecution. Rhona and Vanessa both had the measure of Tom, so did Charity and Cain, who trailed her all the way to Wales. Even the bus driver who saw Belle run away while an angry Tom pursued her would have been a helpful witness.

And of course, there’s DS Foy. Where was he?! He’s been so dogged in his determination to see Tom in court, only for him to vanish at the last minute? Very disappointing.

Now Tom’s been sent to prison and we’re looking forward to Belle rebuilding her life. It was definitely the right ending to an excellent story, but we’d have liked to see it play out slightly differently.

  • Belle’s ready to fight Tom in court and fans are thrilled

Belle’s ready to fight Tom in court and fans are thrilled

In recent Emmerdale scenes, Belle turned up to court at the last minute and exclaimed that she was ready to tell her story, and fans couldn’t be more thrilled!

It’s been a tough year for Belle, having suffered physical abuse and coercive control at the hands of husband Tom King. She eventually found the courage to leave Tom and report him, but that wasn’t the end of her ordeal.

Tom continued to harass Belle and he fooled others into believing Belle was unstable. As the court case approached, Tom has attempted to scheme his way out of things.

It was touch and go whether Tom would get his way, especially when it appeared that Belle was a no show at court. However, she delighted fans when she arrived at the last minute.

    Tom to face justice

The list of Tom’s crimes against Belle is endless. From holding her hand under scolding water and poisoning her dog to locking her in the house and punching her – poor Belle has been through it.

All the while, Tom used gaslighting to make Belle believe she was to blame or that she had misunderstood the situation. He also tried his best to alienate her from her family in order to make her rely on him.

Earlier in the week, Tom was rushed to hospital after apparently trying to take his own life. The incident left Belle feeling guilty and doubting if she should give evidence at the trial.

Fortunately, Belle saw sense. In Wednesday’s episode (December 18), after her family spent ages trying to track her down, Belle arrived at court at the last minute declaring: “It’s time to tell my story”. Go, Belle!

Fans thrilled as Belle arrives in court

Fans took to social media to express their joy at Belle’s court arrival. “Phew! Belle has made it to the court! You’re screwed now Tom,” wrote one viewer on X. Another added: “Oh well done Belle, tell the court what an abuser Tom really is.”

Over on Instagram, another fan wrote: “Thank goodness Belle turned up to wipe that smug smile off his face.”

A fourth fan admitted to feeling emotional over the episode, writing: “I knew that Belle would turn up, but I had tears in my eyes when she did.”

A fifth fan said: “What a fab ending !! Come on Belle you can do this !!!” With a sixth adding: “YESSSS BELLE!!! I KNEW IN MY HEART SHE’D TURN UP!!”

  • Fans beg for Robert Sugden to return in 2025 – here’s whether a comeback is possible

Fans beg for Robert Sugden to return in 2025 – here’s whether a comeback is possible

Emmerdale fans aren’t enjoying Aaron Dingle’s romance with John Sugden and have called for Aaron’s ex, Robert Sugden, to return next year.

Aaron first hooked up with John in August, after arranging to meet him via a dating app. It was later revealed that John was a Sugden and the secret half brother of Robert.

Now, with both Aaron and John having a link to Robert, fans want Robert to return to the Dales in 2025. But where is Robert and is a comeback possible?

    Where is Robert Sugden?

Robert left Emmerdale in 2019 after being sent to prison for killing his sister’s rapist.

During a night out, Victoria Sugden met a man called Lee Posner. He wouldn’t take no for an answer and later he raped Victoria in her own home.

Victoria left it a while before reporting the attack meaning there was no physical evidence and the case was eventually dropped. However, Lee continued to taunt Victoria and her family and one day, Robert lost it and hit Lee over the head with a shovel.

Lee survived the attack long enough to tell police Robert had been responsible, but later died from a intracerebral haemorrhage. Robert was sentenced to 14 years in prison, leaving fans devastated that Robron was no more.

Fans demand a Robert Sugden return

Scenes this week have seen Aaron and John confess their love to each other. While some fans were moved by the scenes, many couldn’t help but point out the lack of chemistry between the pair and reminisce about Aaron’s previous relationship with Robert.

“NOOO WE ALL WANT ROBERT,” one fan said on Instagram. Another added: “I don’t like Aaron with John, it will always be Robert and Aaron!! Please come back Robert!!”

“No one will compare to Robert,” a third fan wrote, with a fourth writing: “Aaron belongs to Robert. You need to bring them back together for good!”

A fifth fan said: “I wish Robert would come back. Aaron and Robert were perfect together!,” with another writing: “John is no Robert!! Bring back Robert in 2025, Aaron belongs to Robert.”

Is a comeback for Robert possible?

Although, it’s only been 5 years since he was sentenced to 14 years in prison, this is soap land where anything is possible. Viewers may also remember that back in 2021, Lee’s brother Luke revealed to their mum Wendy that on the day Lee was attacked by Robert, Lee had beaten Luke up after discovering he was in a relationship with a man.

Luke said he fought back, resulting in Lee falling down and hitting his head. Hours later he was attacked by Robert. If Luke’s confession becomes known, Robert could potentially get out of jail on appeal.

Robert’s name has cropped up a lot lately, with fans hoping it means he’s on his way back. One theory is that John isn’t really who he says he is. Fans have speculated that he could have been in prison with Robert. Could Robert be the key to unlocking the truth about John Sugden and Aidan Moore?

In addition, Ross Barton made a return to the village recently after six years away and he revealed that Rebecca White had died. Rebecca was the mother of Robert’s son Seb – another reason for Robert to come back.

The most recent Robert was played by Ryan Hawley, who has starred in All Creatures Great and Small, Silent Witness and Casualty since leaving Emmerdale.

As Aaron and John confess their love to each other, fans fail to get behind ‘forced’ romance

A recent Emmerdale episode saw John Sugden and Aaron Dingle confess their love for each other, but fans aren’t buying it.

John arrived in the Dales in the summer. Unaware that John was related to his ex-husband Robert Sugden, Aaron arranged to meet up with John via a dating app.

Aaron and John have been in a slow burning romance since, with things stepping up a notch this week. But fans think the relationship is too ‘forced’ and can’t get behind it.

Aaron and John said the L word

This week, Aaron and John have been getting close to nature by camping in the woods. While Aaron was initially reluctant to go on the trip, he relented when he saw how much it meant to John.

The two have become closer during the trip. Aaron has opened up about how his abuser Gordon used to take him camping, while John spoke to Aaron about the mysterious Aidan Moore.

Yesterday’s episode (Wednesday December 18) saw the L-bomb dropped. Aaron informed John that he was in it for the long run and said that he thought he was in love with him. Fortunately for Aaron, he didn’t embarrass himself as John admitted he felt the same way.

Fans can’t get behind the romance

Emmerdale fans aren’t a fan of Aaron and John as a couple, with many citing the lack of chemistry.

One fan wrote on X: “There’s zero chemistry between Aaron and John. It just doesn’t work,” while another said: “Even Aaron thinks John is boring…lol, I don’t think even Emmerdale believe they are selling this snoozefest.”

Over on Instagram, a third fan agreed, writing: “My gosh, this relationship is so forced. These 2 have no chemistry unlike Robert and Aaron.” A fourth viewer added: “Don’t like John! Something not right with him! Plus these 2 don’t gel together at all for me.”

Another added: “I’m just not feeling these two as a couple, the chemistry is not right.” While a sixth fan said: “I’m having difficulty liking this pair. I like John as a person, but he and Aaron don’t have chemistry. It seems forced.”

Charity should have recorded Tom in hospital scenes scream frustrated fans

Over the last few months in Emmerdale, Tom seems to keep finding ways to get himself out of facing consequences.

But hopefully, at long last, it’s finally the end of the evil character who has been tormenting Belle.

While we know the end is in sight, that doesn’t mean Tom didn’t try one last stunt at walking free. And he knows it’s having the effect he wanted thanks to Charity.

Charity visiting Tom at the hospital in Emmerdale

    Emmerdale: Tom faced Charity

Seeing how conflicted Belle was with Tom’s apparent suicide attempt, Charity decided to do what she does best; get involved.

So she headed to the hospital, and while we’re still unsure as to how she managed to get in, she did. And then it was just Tom and her.

Playing it calm at the beginning, Charity began taunting Tom. She reminded him that when he arrived back in the village, they all forgave him for the past.

Very quickly, Tom tried to paint himself as the victim, reminding Charity that Belle literally stabbed him in the back with an axe.

That’s when things began to change for Charity, and she informed Tom that she doesn’t see him as a victim, but instead a game player.

She then implied that he faked the suicide attempt to get out of court, and that’s when Tom’s mask started to slip.

At the thought of Belle spiralling over his hospital visit, Tom began to sound excited. And that’s when Charity realised she may be making things worse.

But fans couldn’t help but think there was a much easier way for Charity to have proven the whole thing – by recording him.

    Charity visits Tom in hospital

    Fans wish Charity recorded Tom

Taking to the comments of Emmerdale’s official Instagram post, fans spoke about how there could have been peace of mind for Belle if they went down a different route.

One wrote: “I honestly thought Charity was recording Tom during her visit. Would have made a great plot twist if she had.”

Another added: “I hope she recorded the whole conversation!”

A third penned: “Would have all been easier to prove if she had’ve thought to record him. Belle would have believed her then.”

It appears while Charity was smart enough to get herself into the hospital room, she never thought of recording him.

And now, with Tom more convinced than ever that he will be walking away a free man, it’s time for him to put on the performance of a lifetime.

But will it be enough? And when Belle vanishes after she leaves a note for her family, will she find the strength to face him one last time?

  • Brenda scenes have viewers laughing out loud as they beg for ‘more comedy’

Brenda scenes have viewers laughing out loud as they beg for ‘more comedy’

Viewers were left laughing out loud, as in last night’s episode of Emmerdale (Tuesday, December 17), Brenda thought Eric was having an affair with Kerry!

The current storylines in Emmerdale have been deemed as dark and bleak by fans. But last night, in between the madness, there was a hint of the comedic soap everyone remembers.

Brenda has had a tough time as of lately, and so the last thing she needed was finding out Eric and Kerry were together. But thankfully for everyone, that is not the case.

Recently Brenda and Eric called time on their relationship, as she could no longer trust him. Behind her back he had invested all of his and Brenda’s money into cryptocurrency that proved to be a scam.

While they may not be living together, the pair still clearly care a lot about each other, which is why Brenda was heading over to his house.

Emmerdale: Brenda brought comedy back to the show

When Brenda arrived at Eric’s last night, she let herself in as usual. But she heard strange noises coming from upstairs, and when she realised it was Eric and Kerry, she quickly assumed they were sleeping together.

In very funny scenes, Kerry walked downstairs just in time to see Brenda literally running away from the house.

Not one to hide her feelings, Brenda soon confronted the pair in the Woolpack, who were equally as shocked as we were at her accusation.

Soon Eric had explained that Kerry was his new cleaner, and was helping him get something he had dropped and that must have been what she heard.

And while it was all a big misunderstanding, it provided some quite comedic scenes for us to enjoy.

    Fans call for more comedy

After the episode aired, fans took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to share their opinions. And it’s safe to say everyone enjoyed the comedic relief.

One wrote: “The Pollard/Kerry/Brenda mix up was hilarious tonight. Please more comedy like this Emmerdale. That was too funny.”

Another added: “The Kerry and Eric scenes with Brenda were brilliant tonight. More of that please.”

A third penned: “Kerry and Eric are an unlikely friendship pairing that I can totally get behind. Was really funny stuff tonight.”

It seems everyone is in agreement that while the show can tackle its hard-hitting storylines, it doesn’t have to be dark stuff every night.

Viewers believe John is definitely ‘lying’ about Aidan Moore after he opens up to Aaron – so just what is he hiding?

In last night’s episode of Emmerdale (Tuesday, December 17),  John opened up to Aaron about his past with the mysterious Aidan Moore. But the conversation has left viewers more convinced than ever that he is lying.

When John first arrived on our screens earlier this year, fans were quick to assume he was hiding something. That’s when we were treated to the mystery of the dog tag with the name Aidan Moore.

John explained that away as someone he cared about who died in Afghanistan as he couldn’t save him. But is he being honest?

For months fans have been deeming John as the ‘fake Sugden’ as they believe there is a bigger secret at play. But exactly what that is remains unknown.

Fans still believe John is lying in Emmerdale

While many fans have criticised the show for appearing to try and copy Aaron’s relationship with Robert, some others feel this may be a hint at John’s true plans.

There are many theories out there; Robert somehow wronged John and so he is taking revenge against those he loved, or maybe John actually is Aidan Moore. Either way, there has to be more than we know. Right?

Taking to X (formerly known as Twitter) after last night’s episode, viewers all could agree on one thing; John is hiding a big secret.

One wrote: “You could reveal John was a serial killer and I would believe it. It’s got to be one of two things with him. Either the writers worry they won’t find a better pairing than Aaron and Robert so they’re trying to write him as the ‘perfect guy,’ or it’s intentional and he is a threat.”

Another added: “So we’re all in agreement that John has stolen Victoria’s identity and isn’t actually him, right?”

A third penned: “I don’t trust John at all. Sorry. He’s lying and I get pure bad vibes from him.”

Could it lead to a happy return?

However, one fan hoped that whatever his secret is, it will lead to the reunion we all want – Robert back in the village.

They wrote: “There is something off about John. I don’t trust him at all. And now I’m worried about Aaron because he lets his guard down too easily. I just hope the whole storyline is leading to a return for Robert.”

So could John or Aidan have served time with Robert inside? It would have given him the access to all of those he cares about most in the village. So far, it’s definitely a strong contender.

And a Robert return is definitely what we all would like to see. If Emmerdale bosses can bring back Ross Barton this year, why can’t they do the same for Robert?

So, is John being honest? Or is there more to come out about the new Sugden?
