  • John Sugden has already been ruined by writers. How to fix it – fast!

John Sugden has already been ruined by writers. How to fix it – fast!

When Emmerdale announced that a new Sugden would arriving in the village, we were super excited. A new storyline for Victoria and a chance to explore the famous family, we had high hopes for newcomer John Sugden.

While he’s been very mysterious and unfriendly to most, John has failed to bring the much-needed drama. However, not all is lost.

Here are some of the ways in which John Sugden storylines could become exciting in Emmerdale…

John Sugden looks brooding in press picture
There’s got to be more to John Sugden! (Credit: ITV)

    Emmerdale John Sugden: More drama?

As the long-lost half-brother of Victoria, John’s arrival in Emmerdale seemed exciting. He was reluctant to get to know his sister and immediately made enemies of the villagers, proving his character was here to shake things up.

John’s feud with Mack was short-lived however, and his fling with Aaron Dingle proved to be slightly anti-climatic. He’s since found himself living and working in Emmerdale, with not much else going on.

Fans have shared their thoughts on the lack of drama John’s arrival brought. One person said: “They should never have made John a Sugden, I thought there was going to be more drama with Aaron and Victoria, when they found out he was Robert’s half brother, but that drama didn’t last more than a day.”

John needs to be at the centre of more drama if viewers are to get excited about his character again, we think!

John Sugden's dog tag with the name Aidan Moore

Emmerdale: More to John Sugden secret?

In amongst his clashes with the villagers, it was revealed that John was keeping a secret. He was seen holding a dog tag with the name Aidan Moore engraved on it.

After misplacing it, Victoria found it and proceeded to quiz him over who Aidan is. John remained tight-lipped and was visibly annoyed that Victoria had found the dog tag.

John then admitted that Aidan was a fellow soldier in the army who had died. He had vowed to save him but felt as though he’d let him down as he couldn’t carry out his promise. John then quit the army and started to live in his van.

This seems like quite the let down after fans were expecting some really dark secret to be revealed! We’re hoping more is revealed about Aidan and that John may’ve not told Vic everything… The storyline had potential and we reckon there NEEDS to be more to it.

Aaron Dingle and John Sugden have a heated exchange in Emmerdale

    Robert Sugden return

Aaron wasted no time in bedding John when he met him for the first time. However, he was stunned to find out John is his ex-husband Robert Sugden’s half-brother. However, this revelation didn’t stop Aaron from getting close to John again.

While the chemistry between Aaron and John is good, the storyline remains slightly uninteresting without Robert. For Aaron and John’s fling to be a big deal, we feel we need Robert to be released from prison and confront them. Imagine!

Emmerdale fans appear to agree too, with many pleading for Ryan Hawley to reprise his role as Robert in the near future. Taking to social media, one soap fan said: “I think they tried to recreate a Robron 2.0, copying their scenes, but Aaron and John lack a good script and a good chemistry. If I were Emmerdale, I’d write a blank check to Ryan Hawley to convince him to return #Robron.”

“I was waiting for a return of Robert. Bring him back!,” another said, while a third fan added: “I would love Robert to come back and reunite with Aaron as we need a win. I’m not a fan of John and I love the bromance between Mackenzie and Aaron too much.”

  • Kim Tate is better than this petty war with Will – here’s what needs to happen next

Kim Tate is better than this petty war with Will – here’s what needs to happen next

Kim Tate and Will Taylor have been at war ever since their marriage broke down in Emmerdale. From Will’s one-night stand with Rose to Kim’s blackmail plot, plenty has happened between the estranged couple.

Despite all the drama, Kim has admitted she still has feelings for Will and he’s also comforted her in the wake of Zak’s death. But, will Kim and Will reconcile? Or have things gone too far?

Here’s what could happen next for Kim and Will, including the Emmerdale Insider team’s thoughts…

Kim and Will are better together
Kim and Will are at war! (Credit: ITV)

    Kim and Will’s split

They were once happily married, but over recent months Kim and Will’s marriage has completely broken down.

The couple’s troubles began while Rose was living at Home Farm with them as she was secretly plotting to take down Kim with the help of Ruby. Eventually, Rose kissed Will and the pair had a one-night stand.

Kim soon found out, but didn’t tell Will that she knew. She proceeded to put an elaborate revenge plan into action, which saw her demand thousands from Will and even make fake porn videos of him and Rose.

Things then took a sinister turn when Kim staged her own kidnapping. When Will arrived to ‘rescue’ her, she knocked him into a coffin and he finally confessed to sleeping with Rose.

Will and Kim are now back living at Home Farm together but aren’t together. Kim has been taunting Will by bringing men back to the house and heading on dates, despite admitting to Lydia she’s having second thoughts about ending their marriage. And, Will slept with Kerry following a few too many drinks at the Woolpack.

    Confused? We all are!

A reconciliation for Kim and Will?

Could we see Will and Kim put all their differences aside and reconcile? Some Emmerdale fans think a reunion between the pair is likely, especially after Kim admitting she still has feelings for her estranged husband.

“Kim and Will are going to end up back together aren’t they,” one fan wrote on social media, while another added: “To be honest this childish tit for tat stuff between Kim and Will makes it so obvious they’ll get back together.”

“Aww Kim and Will just get it together,” a third Emmerdale fan pleaded.

Could Kim kill Will? (Credit: ITV)

    Over for good

There’s been plenty happening between Will and Kim, so it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if the pair decided to end their marriage for good. Many Emmerdale fans are hoping Kim decides to dump Will once and for all as she ‘can do better’.

“Don’t take him back Kim,” one person said on social media, while another commented: “Will… I hope Kim kicks you out permanently!”

Somebody else said: “Oh Kim please put your brain in gear and get rid of him!!” and a fourth fan added: “Kim don’t even get back with Will, you deserve better than him. He should just move out!!”

    Kim to kill Will?

It wouldn’t be out of character for Kim to decide to kill Will off. After all, she’s one of the village’s best villains.

Could see Will meet a grizzly end? Some Emmerdale fans are hoping so, as they plead for evil Kim to make the ultimate comeback.

One person pleaded: “Kim, will you polish Will off? Do us a favour and include Jimmy who is long since past his use by date.” Another said: “Will is a sad, petty little [bleep]. Kill him off.”

“Doesn’t Kim have some chums that could just get rid of Will already?,” a third Emmerdale fan asked.

The Emmerdale Insider team on what should happen with Will and Kim

We’ve certainly got our opinions here at Emmerdale Insider on what should happen next in Kim and Will’s marriage. It’s a point of much discussion most days, so here’s what we think…

    Carena Crawford, Editor

“I want Kim and Will to get back together, stop all this nonsense and rule the Dales together. Kim is at her best when she’s being bad and he’s got a past too – just look at what happened when they teamed up to take down Dawn’s evil ex Alex. They could become the ultimate power couple.”

    Kaggie Hyland, Editor-in-Chief

“I’m with Carena. Will and Kim forever! It’d be an interesting arc for them to go a bit Band Of Merry Men and only do over villains from now on, I think.”

    Tamzin Meyer, Assistant Soap Editor

“Kim needs to ditch Will for good and end this childish need for revenge immediately. I saw more potential with Peter the Finance Guy than with Will. Kim can do so much better!”

    Danni King, Freelance Writer

“Kim can do much better than Will! Too much has happened for them to reconcile I think, but this is Emmerdale, so who knows?!”

    Kerry Barrett, Freelance Writer

“They’re much better together than apart – they sort of give each other a purpose. And since the days of Dave Glover, Kim’s always been better with a bit of rough than a posh bloke!”

  • Fans slam ‘cringe’ plot holes as Tom smashes up tablet

Fans slam ‘cringe’ plot holes as Tom smashes up tablet

Fans of Emmerdale have slammed last night’s episode of the soap (Monday, October 7) for its many ‘cringe’ plot holes – as sneaky Tom King attempted to cover his tracks by destroying the tablet which was full of evidence of his own wrongdoing.

Sneaking into Butlers Farm – after first menacing little Isaac – Tom stole back his tablet. At home, in the garden, he then destroyed the incriminating device – first stomping on it (rather ineffectually) and then smashing it to bits with a rock.

Tom’s latest act only succeeded in confusing viewers, who found the scene full of plot holes and technological inaccuracies.

Emmerdale fans question soap logic as Tom destroys tablet

Writing on a Reddit discussion thread, fans shared their frustration, with one viewer saying: ‘Why on earth did the tablet start SMOKING when he was smashing it up?? Entire episode was baffling start to finish.’

Another viewer agreed, pointing out: ‘Smashing a tablet doesn’t delete data. This is becoming a joke now. Have they forgotten about the cloud? It’s actually cringe at this point.’

‘Would have been a lot cheaper to restore the tablet to factory settings, Tom!,’ joked another.

Elsewhere, fans found themselves irritated to see Tom menace Belle yet again, pointing out that she could just… record his slasher villain behaviour.

‘And again Belle doesn’t have a camera on her phone,’ sighed another fan.

Frustrating stuff. However, the end may yet be in sight…

However, unbeknownst to Tom, there had been a witness to his act of destruction – cousin Carl Jr, who watched him destroy the tablet from a window inside the house.

What Carl decides to do with this information remains to be seen, but if he does speak up, then the youngster could ultimately be Tom’s downfall…

  • Fans predict ‘unexpected saviour’ as Tom makes terrible mistake

Fans predict ‘unexpected saviour’ as Tom makes terrible mistake

Fans of Emmerdale have predicted that Tom King’s downfall is at hand – and an ‘unexpected’ saviour could be responsible.

Last night’s episode (Monday, October 7) of the soap saw Tom destroy all evidence of his wrongdoing against Belle, stealing back his missing tablet and then smashing it up to hide the incriminating footage within.

    Tom destroys the evidence

This followed the events of last week, in which Moira stumbled across Tom’s videos – then promptly forgot she’d seen them in the first place, suffered a seizure, and lost the tablet.

Having gotten the tablet back, Tom then destroyed it, whacking it to bits with a rock. Job done, eh?

Little did Tom know, but cousin Carl Jr had seen it all… witnessing Tom’s curious act of aggression through the window.

    But what happens next?

Emmerdale fans predict Carl will bring Tom down

Writing on social media as the episode aired, fans shared their theories – and many wondered whether little Carl Jr might be Tom’s undoing.

“The evil Tom lurking around and plotting, not knowing Carl knows what he’s done, the downfall of Tom begins!” wrote one gleeful viewer.

“The way little Carl King is going to turn out to be the unexpected hero of this abuse storyline,” said another.

“Grass on him Carl,” wrote a third.

“I hope Carl Jnr spills everything!!!!!,” prayed a fourth.

    Smug Tom rubs it in

Earlier in the episode, Tom had continued to menace Belle, taunting her as she walked through the village. While Belle assured him that he was ‘going down’ for what he had done, smug Tom remained… well, perfectly smug.

  • Who is returning for Zak Dingle’s funeral? From Debbie Dingle to Lisa – all the fan theories so far

Who is returning for Zak Dingle’s funeral? From Debbie Dingle to Lisa – all the fan theories so far

A dark cloud is set to fall over the Dingle family farm with the sad news that beloved patriarch and Emmerdale icon Zak has died. In scenes airing next week, the family will learn the shocking news after a call from Debbie, who breaks the tragic news to her devastated relatives.

Sadly, fans will have been expecting the news for some time now – following actor Steve Halliwell’s sad passing late last year. The show has finally caught up to reality, and Zak’s funeral scenes are set to air in the coming weeks.

Emmerdale spoilers: The Dingles learn that Zak has died

But, this being a Dingle family funeral, the event won’t go by without drama of its own. And recent Emmerdale spoilers have confirmed that there will be a surprise face or too at Zak’s funeral.

This was seemingly confirmed by actor Jeff Hordley, who revealed yesterday (Monday, October 7): ‘It’s someone you might know. They’re not going to make things go smoothly for the Dingles.’

But who will be paying the Dingles a visit?

Debbie Dingle looking confused on Emmerdale
Fans have long hoped for Debbie’s return to the soap (Credit: ITV)

    Debbie Dingle

Of all the characters it’d make sense to return for Zak’s funeral, granddaughter Debbie – offspring of Cain and Charity – is a no-brainer.

Unfortunately, due to behind-the-scenes friction between the actress and the soap, Charley Webb’s return to Emmerdale seems unlikely at best.

However, that hasn’t stopped fans from hoping for her return.

“Debbie with a new head. How many heads has Ben Eastenders had so far last count?,” asked one fan, suggesting that producers might re-cast the character.

“Wanna say Debbie but Charley won’t be coming back unless she’s recast which is a shame cos she’s the OG Debbie,” bemoaned another.

    Lisa looks sad on Emmerdale
Could a ghostly Lisa return to see Zak off? (Credit: ITV)

    Lisa Dingle

Interestingly, Jeff hinted that the returning character could be someone coming back from the dead. While an EastEnders-style resurrection seems unlikely, Zak’s beloved wife Lisa could return in a poignant graveside cameo.

“Maybe the return is Lisa the ghost like when Jack appeared at his funeral but obviously Jane can film a scene in person. I’d love a scene between Lisa and Belle,” suggested one fan.

    Emily looks agitated on Emmerdale

    Emily Kirk

Mild-mannered Emily was the husband of Zak’s late son, Butch. Taking a job at the Post Office, she met and soon warmed to Butch, beginning their sweet romance.

It ended tragically, however, when Butch was fatally injured during a terrible car chase between him and Emily’s protective father, John. Butch and Emily were married on his deathbed, with Butch passing shortly after they said their vows.

Although Emily re-married – to vet Paddy – she remained close to the Dingles. It would make sense if Emily were to return to pay her last respects to beloved father figure Zak.

“If Emily is not the Dingle returning then I don’t want it,” huffed one fan on X.

    Kathy smiling on Emmerdale

    Kathy Glover

She may not have been a Dingle, but Kathy Glover is an undeniable part of Emmerdale history, with links to all of the soap’s most iconic figures – from Zak himself to Seth, Butch and Alan.

“With Zak’s death and funeral next week, now would have been the right time for a small return for Kathy Glover. She could have spoke about Butch, Seth, Alan and of course come face to face with Kim Tate again,” suggested one hopeful viewer.

    Ross Barton

It has already been confirmed that Ross Barton will be returning to the soap later this year. With Debbie unlikely to be returning, and Ross having so many Dingle ties (including son Moses, who he shared with Charity), could this be the character’s foot back in the door?

  • Tom to kill Leyla ahead of Roxy Shahidi reported ‘exit?’

Tom to kill Leyla ahead of Roxy Shahidi reported ‘exit?’

It was reported over the weekend that Roxy Shahidi is leaving her role as Leyla Harding on Emmerdale after 16 years.

According to The Sun, the actress wants to ‘spread her wings’ and Leyla will be killed off in a ‘meaty exit storyline.’

But how exactly will she die? Fans have speculated that perhaps Tom might have something to do with her exit.

Emmerdale's Leyla is flirting with Caleb

    Leyla’s time in Emmerdale

She arrived in Emmerdale in 2008 before leaving in 2011. She returned for a brief stint in 2013 before reprising her role permanently in 2014.

During her time on the show, the character has been involved in plenty of storylines.

She quickly started a relationship with David, but it wasn’t plain sailing. At one point he believed she was having an affair with her sister Alicia’s husband. It was later revealed she was just visiting Alicia and Justin’s son Jacob, who was in fact really her son.

Leyla was also caught pole dancing by her sister, and a deep storyline saw her support Jacob following the revelation that paedophile teacher Maya Stepney had been grooming him.

She later married Dr Liam, but the relationship broke down following her drug addiction.

    Leyla to leave Emmerdale

A source told The Sun: ‘Roxy has adored her time on the soap and has made so many happy memories since first joining when she was 17.

‘The cast have become like family to her and she has grown so much as an actress, but now feels like the perfect time to spread her wings and try something new.

‘She is really excited about her meaty exit storyline, which will see her character Leyla die on screen. She’d rather go out in a blaze of glory and be remembered.’

Outside of Emmerdale, Roxy is a trained yoga instructor and wellbeing influencer. Earlier this year, she took part in Dancing on Ice as well as the reality documentary series Drama Queens.

    Will Tom kill Leyla?

In recent Emmerdale scenes, Belle reported Tom to the police for the abuse he has inflicted on her.

With Leyla working at Take a Vow alongside Belle, could she become involved in the couple’s messy split? Fans certainly think so.

‘I am actually shocked that it’s been confirmed that Leyla Harding is set to get killed in Emmerdale, does anyone think they could make Meena come back or is it something to do with Tom?,’ asked one curious fan on X.

Another fan agreed, writing: ‘She could get in Tom’s way with Belle,’ with a third shocked viewer asking: ‘Leyla’s gonna die? How? Does Tom kill her?’

Over on Reddit, fans are also on board with this theory, with one writing: ‘Think it’s tied in with Tom & Belle storyline and he actually kills Leyla. I was wondering if she finds out something about Tom and wants to help Belle and he kills her to shut her up or Tom on rampage trying to kill Belle and accidently kills Leyla.”

Another added: ‘We know Belle and Tom’s storyline will come to a head around Christmas time. Leyla doesn’t have that many ties to the village any more except for Suzy and Belle through the business. It would tie up the loose ends quite nicely for both.”

Former Emmerdale star Jenna Coleman has welcomed her first child with her boyfriend Jamie Childs, with the new parents being spotted taking their baby for a walk in London.

The 38-year-old actress, who played Jasmine Thomas in Emmerdale, first showed off a baby bump in June. She later showed off her bare bump on Instagram, writing: ‘Spent summer cooking.’

Jenna and Jamie have not officially announced the baby’s birth, but they looked the perfect happy family during their stroll.

    Emmerdale star announces pregnancy

Jenna met Jamie while filming Netflix’s Sandman – a series adapted from Neil Gaiman’s comic book series – and the couple have been together for four years.

There were rumours that the actress had tied the knot with Jamie, after she was spotted with a ring on her wedding finger. However, she has since appeared without the ring.

Jenna previously told Harper’s Bazaar: ‘Half of my friends have babies, and half don’t, so it doesn’t feel like a pressure. I want to take my time.’

She also joked about the amount of times she has given birth on screen within her role as Queen Victoria. She told Jonathan Ross: ‘I have had many a labour scene now, I’m running out of noises for labour scenes.

‘I’m sure one day maybe if I ever give birth I’ll realise I was totally wrong.’

Earlier this year she arrived at a celebratory dinner with a growing bump. She later commented on the pregnancy when she added a picture to Instagram showing her bare bump. She wrote: “‘pent summer cooking,’ and was inundated with messages of congratulations from fans.

    Jenna Coleman has a baby

Over the weekend, news broke that Jenna had given birth to her first child with her director boyfriend Jamie.

Looking glam in jeans, a red top and black sunglasses, Jenna was seen pushing a pram in North London, while Jamie walked beside her with the newborn strapped to his chest in a baby carrier.

The tot’s bright pink socks could be seen poking out from the sling – leading fans to speculate that the baby is a girl.

Who was Jasmine Thomas in Emmerdale?

Jasmine arrived in Emmerdale in June 2005 as the niece of Ashley Thomas. She was sent to stay with Ashley and her grandfather Sandy after she was suspended from school.

One of her big stories saw her form a close bond with Debbie Dingle, with the pair soon starting a relationship. Debbie’s dad Cain was not happy about this development and he seduced Jasmine.

In her job as a reporter, Jasmine investigated criminal gang the McFarlanes and discovered that local policeman Shane Doyle was on their payroll.

After Shane caught her looking for evidence, he tried to rape Jasmine, but Debbie came to her rescue. Shane turned his focus to Debbie, resulting in Jasmine attacking Shane and killing him.

The body was buried in the lake, but was later discovered. Jasmine planned to run away, but she returned to face the music and was sentenced to four years in prison.

Jasmine would have been released from prison by now, but her location is unknown.

Four characters were killed – Mark Hughes, Elizabeth Pollard (Eric’s wife), Archie Brooks and Leonard Kempinski – while Chris Tate was badly injured and left unable to walk.

The storyline was quite controversial at the time because it came just five years after the real-life Lockerbie disaster. But it was a hit with viewers and it transformed Emmerdale from a quiet countryside soap into the must-see television it is today.

Kim leaves Frank to die 1997

Kim Tate‘s marriage to Frank was dead and buried by 1997. She had cheated on him with Dave Glover, and thought for a while that baby James was Dave’s, only to discover that Frank was his dad.

When Dave was killed in a fire, rescuing little James, Kim well and truly went off the rails! She hired a lookalike to drive her car round the village, so everyone thought she was still there, then ran off to the Caribbean. But tragedy struck when the lookalike crashed the car into the lake and died. Frank identified the body as Kim and was arrested for murder!

When Kim returned, the shock of seeing his ‘dead’ wife caused Frank to have a heart attack. Kim coldly watched him die, without going for help. And as he breathed his last she checked for signs of life with the mirror from her handbag – then reapplied her make-up and left him on the floor.

The Sugdens were were struggling with money, and Sarah Sugden had been having a steamy secret affair with farmhand Richie.

Adopted son Andy was determined to help them out of their financial hole and he came up with the idea of burning down a barn so dad Jack could claim on the insurance.

But he didn’t know that Sarah and Richie were inside when he lit the match. Richie made it out, but Sarah died in the flames.

Another dramatic death! Tricia Dingle was super popular with the Emmerdale residents and viewers alike. But on New Year’s Eve 2003, she was outside when a huge storm hit the village.

Lightning struck the Woolpack and the chimney collapsed, burying poor Tricia. Husband Marlon found her and called for help but though Tricia made it to hospital, she later died of her injuries. SOB!

The 40th anniversary live episode 2012

One of the best live episodes of a soap, ever! The live episode to celebrate Emmerdale’s 40th anniversary featured the weddings of Chas Dingle to Dan Spencer, and Katie Sugden to Declan Macey, and the births of Molly Sharma, and Jack Sugden Jr. AND a murder!

When Carl King tried to rape newly wed Chas she whacked him with a brick and believed she’d killed him. But actually Carl was finished off by future Dales serial killer Cameron Murray.

    The Woolpack siege 2013

Cameron’s killing spree that began with the live episode in 2012 came to an end a year later with a dramatic siege at the Woolpack. In one of the most tense episodes of soap ever, he held drinkers at gun point, shot Alicia Metcalfe and then pursued Chas and Debbie through the flooded pub cellar. Cameron was electrocuted and his murderous rampage in the Dales came to an end.

    The Hotten by-pass crash 2016

FIVE storylines came together in the thrilling crash that took place in October 2016. Emma Barton had been holding estranged husband James hostage in a Misery-style revenge plot.

When he escaped, she tracked him down to the road bridge – wearing her wedding dress, of course! – and shoved him off.

James plummeted on to the by-pass and on to a car driven by dementia-sufferer Ashley Thomas. Ashley’s car flipped and caused Pierce Harris to collide with a lorry, which then caused Robert Sugden and Aaron Dingle‘s car to leave the road and plunge into a lake. Oh, and they just happened to have kidnapped Lachlan White and put him in the boot.

Just seconds later, Rhona and Paddy drove straight into the carnage and flipped their van as they tried to avoid it. It was one of the most impressive stunts in Emmerdale history!

Best Emmerdale episodes: Holly Barton’s death 2016

Sometimes the best episodes are the huge stunts and sometimes it’s the quiet, devastating episodes that hit hardest. Holly Barton’s death from a drug overdose definitely fits the latter category.

Holly lay dead in bed, while mum Moira pottered around at home. And when she finally went to check on her daughter and found her dead, the shock was real. It’s almost a decade since Holly died, but her tragic demise still affects her family.

Charity Dingle has been through a lot in her time in Emmerdale but perhaps the most heart-wrenching was when she finally faced her past. Charity revealed that she’d been sexually exploited by crooked cop DI Bails, and had a baby boy.

With the help of her new-found son, Ryan, she bravely faced her abuser in court in a very emotional episode.

Best Emmerdale episodes: Grace dies 2018

Chas and Paddy Dingle knew their baby Grace was going to die almost as soon as she was born, but that didn’t make the loss any easier. In a devastatingly sad episode, the new parents cuddled their little girl – who lived for just 29 minutes – as they imagined the future she might have had.

    Meena murders Leanna 2021

There’s very little we enjoy more than an Emmerdale serial killer and Meena Jutla was one of the best! Her utter lack of remorse as she stalked her prey made her super scary.

When birthday girl Leanna Cavanagh twigged that Meena wasn’t the caring nurse she pretended to be, Meena pursued her through the graveyard. The chase ended up on the bridge, where Meena pushed Leanna. When the fall didn’t kill the teenager, Meena climbed down and finished her off. It was brutal but gripping stuff.

When Marlon proposed to a delighted Rhona, he rushed home to find the ring – only to suffer a stroke. Marlon’s experience as he lay helpless on the floor, waiting for help to come, was praised for raising stroke awareness. And his long recovery won actor Mark Charnock praise, too.

Review of the week: Belle’s bravery, Tom’s amazing recovery and Liam’s dressing up

Our Emmerdale review this week is mostly just admiration – at Belle’s fearlessness, at Tom shrugging off an axe wound, at DS Foy’s interrogation techniques, and at Liam finding another fancy dress costume.

Here’s what we thought of this week’s episode in our Emmerdale review.

    Belle’s bravery

We have to be honest, we were a bit disappointed when Belle went to see Tom in the hospital. Surely she wasn’t going to do as he asked, we thought. SURELY no matter how scared she was, she wouldn’t give in and make a deal?

But NO! We had underestimated the steely strength of Ms Dingle, who is most definitely down but not out. Belle brilliantly double-crossed evil Tom!

She dug up the murder weapon, marched into the police station with it, and announced she was a victim of domestic violence.

She’s got a long road ahead of her, but we are cheering her on.

    DS Foy as bad cop

HOW good is it to see someone giving Tom a hard time? We are LOVING DS Foy‘s obvious dislike and suspicion of Tom King. We’re so used to everyone being nice to Tom, or tiptoeing around him, it’s refreshing to see someone really asking him to account for his actions. More of this, please! We want to see him sweat!

    Tom’s miraculous recovery

Speaking of Tom, we are once again amazed and impressed by the miraculous treatment Emmerdale residents receive at Hotten General. One minute they’re out cold having been stabbed in the back with an axe, or gored by a bull, or dragged from a burning barn, the next they’re FINE.

Just a couple of days after being whacked by Belle, Tom was wandering round the village with only an occasional twinge. Whatever they’re prescribing at that hospital, we’d like some!

Brilliant youngsters in our Emmerdale review

Hot on the heels of Isaac Dingle stealing every scene he’s in, comes little Carl Holliday – Jimmy King’s son. We’ve not seen him for yonks, but suddenly him helping himself to Tom’s tablet and then lending it to buddy Isaac, is an important plot twist. Young actors can be unpredictable, but Charlie Joyce, who plays Carl, knocked it out the park this week.

John Sugden helps a poorly Eric Pollard in Emmerdale
Handsome AND medically trained? What more could we ask for? (Except an answer to the whole Aidan Moore thing).

    A John Sugden mystery

We thought that John being all quiet and prickly and brooding would be a bit irritating, but somehow it’s not. In fact, we love his extreme Sugden-ness. It’s like Jack has been reborn. We’re such fans, we don’t even care who Aidan Moore is or why John has his dog tag (actually, no, this is a lie – we do care).

No thanks to a love triangle in our Emmerdale review

Ella’s so sweet, and eager to please but now her secret’s out, and the dust has settled, it seems like the powers that be don’t know what to do with her. And absolutely the wrong thing to do with her is to stick her back with Liam, in some weird off-screen romance that we’ve only just found out about.

Liam is lovely – we adore him – but let’s be honest, he is an old dog who’s been round the village and back again. He’s too jaded for Ella – but he’s perfect for Chas, who’s a bit jaded herself. And the thought of another love triangle involving Liam in fancy dress makes us feel a bit jaded too. Please make it stop.
