As the Dingles celebrate 30 years – The best ever Dingle moments

The Dingles feel like part of the furniture in Emmerdale. Their numbers keep growing and their storylines keep getting more dramatic, and it’s hard to remember a time when there wasn’t at least one Dingle in the village!

It’s 30 years since the family burst on to our screens, and they’re right at the heart of storylines this week as the family get the sad news that Zak – the head of the Dingles and Belle, Sam and Cain’s dad – had died.

Emmerdale is celebrating the whole Dingle clan this week, so we decided to join in by remembering some of the best Dingle moments!

Here’s what we chose – what are yours?

Silly moments for the Dingles in Emmerdale

It’s strange to remember this now but when the Dingles first arrived on-screen, they were often the butt of jokes! Their scams and money-making schemes were the talk of the village – remember these?!

Barry Clegg and his pig waste rocket
Barry Clegg built the rocket and Butch planned a space trip (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)

    Butch in space

In 1997, Lisa’s ex-husband Barry Clegg built a rocket that ran on pig waste. So of course the Dingles decided to build a rocket and send Butch into space. Mark Charnock, who plays Marlon, says it was his favourite Dingle moment. It won’t surprise anyone to know their attempt to send Butch into space failed!

    Hillbilly rock

It’s a bit of a cheat as it wasn’t just Dingles, and it wasn’t just in Emmerdale but the Woolpackers – a country music band – had some chart success back in the late 90s.
Steve Halliwell, aka Zak Dingle, was joined by fellow Emmerdale stars Alun Lewis (Vic Windsor) and Billy Hartman (Terry) as well as Jane Cox (Lisa Dingle), and reached number five in the charts with Hillbilly Rock!

Babies for the Dingles in Emmerdale

We’ve seen five generations of Dingles on our screens and some very memorable births!

Lisa and Zak and baby Belle
Baby Belle’s arrival was a surprise for her parents! (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)

    A Christmas miracle

Lisa didn’t know she was expecting when she gave birth to baby Belle. She felt a bit peculiar while she was out in the pen, helping Paddy look after a poorly pig. Lisa gave birth to baby Belle with Paddy’s help, on Christmas Day in 1998.

Chas and Paddy say goodbye to baby Grace

    Heartbreak for Chas

There was heartbreak for Chas Dingle when she found out her unborn baby wouldn’t survive for long after she arrived. Chas chose to continue her pregnancy and when she gave birth to baby Grace, she and dad Paddy, imagined their daughter’s future. Baby Grace only lived for 29 minutes.

    Debbie’s surprise

Teenager Debbie Dingle got pregnant after a brief affair with Andy Sugden. She kept her pregnancy a secret from just about everyone and eventually gave birth to little Sarah in the woods. Debbie struggled with motherhood at first, but she’s now devoted to Sarah and her son Jack.

Weddings for the Dingles in Emmerdale

    Robron finally tie the knot

Everyone had waited a long time for Robert Sugden and Aaron Dingle to tie the knot. They finally got their shiz together and planned their big day, only for Aaron’s mum Chas give birth to tragic baby Grace the day before. But with Chas’s blessing the pair finally walked down the aisle and made Robron official.

    Tina’s revenge

Tina Dingle played a long game of revenge when she seduced brother Ben’s killer, Luke McAllister. She wooed Luke, convincing him and everyone else they had a future, she pretended to be pregnant, planned a wedding and manipulated Luke into selling his family heirlooms. And then she jilted him at the altar. Ouch!

Chas and Carl on their wedding day

    Chas gets her own back

Tina was obviously in Chas’s mind when she found out her fiancé Carl King was cheating with Eve Jenson. Just like her cousin before her, Chas kept on wedding planning, pocketing the cash Carl was handing over, and jilted him at the altar. He totally deserved it, let’s be honest. It was Chas’s finest moment!

    Debbie and Pete’s explosive wedding

If we’re after the most dramatic wedding in Emmerdale, then Debbie Dingle’s big day with Pete Barton definitely fits the bill. Not only was the bride’s affair with the groom’s brother revealed at the reception, but thanks to a chain of events involving Robert Sugden, Chrissie White and Adam Barton, a helicopter crashed into the party, killing Val Pollard!

    Lisa’s tragic big day

After finally rekindling her relationship with Zak, Lisa was thrilled when they walked down the aisle for a second time. The pair had a perfect wedding day – the Woolpackers even made an appearance at the reception – and then Lisa headed back to Wishing Well Cottage to change her dress. She sat down next to loyal pooch Monty and passed away peacefully. SOB!

Deaths for the Dingle family in Emmerdale

Of course, with the births and the marriages, there has to come the deaths. It’s the circle of life, as Elton John would say. Here’s the best ones:

faith and Cain enjoy the day together at the seaside in Emmerdale Dingles Emmerdale
Cain gave Faith a memorable ‘trip’ to the seaside before she died (Credit: ITV)

    Faith makes her mark

Yes Faith wasn’t the best mum to Chas and Cain, and she didn’t even know newcomer son Caleb, but everyone loved her just the same. From her arrival in Emmerdale to her final days spent on a trip to the seaside (sort of), she stole the show, and her peaceful death with son Cain at her side, was perfect.

    Gennie’s tragic demise

It was YEARS ago but we’re still reeling at Genesis Walker’s brutal death at the hands of Dales killer Cameron Murray. Gennie had worked out Cameron was the killer, but he chased her down and killed her. It was a shocking soap moment and one Emmerdale fans will remember forever.

Drama for the Dingles in Emmerdale

Where there’s a Dingle, there’s always drama! It’s hard to pick the most dramatic Dingle moments but here’s a few that got our hearts racing.

Charity gives evidence against Bails Dingles Emmerdale
Charity bravely faced her abuser in court (Credit: ITV)

    Charity v Bails

Brave, bold Charity confronted her past, literally and metaphorically, when she took on her one-time abuser, DI Mark Bails. Not only did Charity face the rapist police officer in court, she also discovered the son she thought had died – Ryan Stocks – was alive and well, and reconnected with him.

    Chas and Debbie Vs Cameron

Emmerdale killer Cameron Murray went to jail, only to escape and come back to the village to torment his former lovers Chas and Debbie. In tense scenes, unhinged Cameron held the whole pub at gunpoint, shooting Alicia Metcalfe in the process. And then he pursued a terrified Debbie and Chas through the flooded pub cellar before he was electrocuted and died.

Tom smashes the door with an axe as Belle screams
The tension was high as Tom tracked Belle down (Credit: ITV)

    Belle and Tom’s axe-wielding confrontation

It’s hard to pick a moment from this ongoing tale, but just a few weeks ago, Belle lashed out and stuck an axe in Tom’s back – and who could blame her?! The moment when a frantic, screaming Belle was on one side of the door, with Tom smashing his way through, Jack Nicholson style, will go down in Emmerdale history!

  • Fans praise ‘respectful’ Emmerdale over Zak’s death storyline

Fans praise ‘respectful’ Emmerdale over Zak’s death storyline

Emmerdale fans have praised the ITV soap for taking its time with Zak Dingle‘s death storyline following actor Steve Halliwell’s death.

Steve passed away in December 2023, but it is only now, 10 months later, that his character Zak is receiving an on-screen funeral.

Fans of Emmerdale have called this move ‘respectful’ as it’s allowed Steve’s family to grieve first.

    Steve Halliwell’s death

Following news of Steve’s death, his family released a statement, which read: “He went to sleep, peacefully with his loved ones around him. He was making us laugh to the end, the most amazing father and grandfather you could ever wish for, family was everything to him. We would like to thank the wonderful staff at St James Hospital and the Wheatfield Hospice for their love and kindness in his final days. He didn’t want sadness, just to rejoice in a life well lived.”

The soap also shared a statement, where it said: “Steve will forever be synonymous with Emmerdale. The proud defender and head of the Dingle family. Heart and humour in all he did, it has been and always will be impossible not to smile when you think of him.”

Tributes also poured in from fans and castmates, including Lisa Riley, who spoke for everyone when she said: “That boy from Bury did good.”

    Zac’s death in Emmerdale

Steve Halliwell’s last appearance in the soap was in June 2023. One of his final scenes saw him beeping the horn on his mobility scooter as Dan Spencer compared him to Evel Knievel. The character then left the Dales to live with granddaughter Debbie Dingle in Scotland.

Last month, Cain Dingle received news from his daughter Debbie that Zak wasn’t well. Cain subsequently went up to Scotland to help his dad through this period of ill health.

In Monday’s episode (October 14), Cain unexpectedly returned home early. He was in high spirits as he shared with wife Moira that Zak was doing much better. However, things soon took a turn for the worse. Answering a call from Debbie, Moira received the news that Zak had sadly passed away.

Moira told her husband and Tuesday’s episode (October 15) will see Cain break the sad news to the rest of the family ahead of Zak’s funeral later in the week.

Emmerdale fans praise show over sensitivity

The soap confirmed plans to give Zak an on-screen send-off earlier in the year, with Emmerdale producer Sophie Roper saying: “There’ll be a hugely fitting tribute for such an iconic character coming up.”

While some fans have wondered why it’s taken so long to write in Zak’s death, most have been understanding and have branded the wait ‘respectful.’

“Awww… It’s really respectful how they have taken a while to now have Zak pass. He’s a legend,” wrote one fan on X.

On Instagram, another viewer said: “I’m so glad they have now given Zak the recognition after all this time,” with a third fan suggesting Steve’s real life family wouldn’t have wanted to see the funeral on screen so soon after his death. They wrote: “They leave it until the family agrees that they are ready.”

Another fan added: “Which is understandable, losing a loved one is hard especially when they were in a soap opera and his close cast were like family too.”

Classic Emmerdale spoilers: Katie is in a car accident and the Sugdens take on the Kings

In Classic Emmerdale spoilers for episodes airing on ITV3 on Tuesday October 15, the Sugdens take revenge on the Kings and Katie receives bad news about her dad. These episodes originally aired on February 27 and 28, 2006.

Sugdens v Kings in Classic Emmerdale spoilers

Andy and Daz decide to take revenge on the Kings as payback for them getting away with contaminating their water supply with antifreeze. They break into the Kings’ site office and destroy everything. Later, when Jimmy sees the devastation in the office, he vows that the Sugdens won’t get away with it. However, Matthew says he will deal with it as Jimmy messes up everything he touches.

Matthew congratulates Jack on the Sugdens having the last laugh by trashing the office and warns that they’re even now. A troubled Jack has no idea what Matthew is talking about, but he soon realises that his boys have been up to no good and he heads to Butler’s Farm to confront them. Furious with Andy and Daz, Jack makes them promise they won’t do anything like that again.

Meanwhile, Matthew is feeling the weight of responsibility. The environmental officer tells him that high concentrations of antifreeze were found in the soil on the development, but as there isn’t any hard evidence, nothing else can be done. Matthew is happy, but covers his smugness.

Katie is in a serious car accident

The police inform Andy that Katie has been in a serious car accident which killed her father. He heads to the hospital in Leeds where Katie is in a coma.

Andy spends the night at Katie’s bedside where a nurse tells Andy that Katie’s chances of survival are good. The nurse encourages Andy to chat with Katie as a familiar voice can be soothing, but Andy doesn’t know what to say.

Meanwhile, at Butler’s Farm, Jack updates Daz on Katie’s condition. While sympathetic, Daz wants to know what it has to do with Andy. Jack is firm that Andy being there for Katie doesn’t mean that she’ll be back in his life for good.

Back at the hospital, the alarms start sounding and Katie is rushed into theatre due to abdominal bleeding. After a tense few hours, Katie is brought back to the ward. Andy feels silly chatting away to her, but then she starts to wake up.

Katie is confused at first but is glad to see a friendly face in Andy. As her memories start to return, Katie asks after her dad. Andy tells Katie the truth – that Brian died in the car crash. Katie is devastated at the news and breaks down. Believing it to be her fault, distraught Katie clings to Andy.

Andy is happy to be Katie’s rock but is struggling to keep a lid on his feelings for his estranged wife.

    Zara causes a stir

The new temp at the King’s office, Zara, causes a stir. But her obvious charms go unnoticed by Matthew. Jimmy, however, is enjoying having a pretty girl to impress and invites her to the pub to celebrate his birthday. In the pub with the whole King clan, Zara impresses Tom.

Carl tells Matthew that Zara would be good for him and he should move on. Thinking about Sadie, Matthew dismisses his brother’s advice and slips out.

Later, Matthew is alone at the office when Zara enters. Zara mocks Jimmy’s attempts to impress her and flirts with Matthew as she asks if there is a special lady in his life. Matthew is wary of the questions and, thinking about Sadie again, he brushes her off.

Alan continues to try and make amends with Steph

Betty suspects that Alan is lonely at Holdgate Farm and convinces Steph and Adam to help get Alan back to Keepers Cottages – where he belongs. Adam think it’s a good idea and they agree to help. Alan is surprised, but happy with the plan, although he is disappointed that Steph is still not ready to forgive him.

Alan pays Steph a visit and outlines a business proposal that will get guests to stay at the B&B. He does a big sell and suggests they could invest in extra staff for the B&B if Steph is amenable. Alan believes it’s a great opportunity for them, but stresses he needs Steph on board as a partner if they are to make it work.

Steph is unsure and Alan doesn’t want to push her, so he asks her to at least think about it. After some gentle persuasion from Adam, Steph agrees to host the Country Pursuits weekends with her dad. Alan is glad, but Steph makes it clear that they shouldn’t rush things on a personal front.

    Chas is back for good

Chas tells Lisa that she is back for good because the Army have deemed her unfit for service. However, Louise is smug as Diane awkwardly informs Chas that they have enough staff.

Later, Chas is shocked to hear about Katie and rushes to the hospital.

During yesterday’s episode, Moira took a phone call from Debbie Dingle informing her of Zak’s passing. She then had the tough job of telling her husband Cain that his dad had died. Cain had only just returned from visiting his dad in Scotland and had informed Moira that Zak was doing much better.

Spoilers: Moira asks a huge favour of Vanessa as she gets a new date for her operation

Moira Dingle has a new date for the operation to remove her brain tumour in Emmerdale spoilers next week. However, her relief quickly turns into worry when she thinks about the tough journey she has ahead of her.

Things haven’t been easy for Moira since she learned of her brain tumour. Its diagnosis came after weeks of unpredictable behaviour and violent outbursts.

Moira diagnosed with brain tumour after erratic outbursts

While Moira’s behaviour at first seemed like an understandable reaction to son Matty’s imprisonment, husband Cain grew worried when her mood swings and violence only escalated afterwards. First, she lashed out at Ruby, after seeing her and Cain together and assuming that the pair were having an affair (earning Ruby one of Moira’s signature ‘gifts from Glasgow’ as a result).

Things took an even stranger turn when she attempted to kiss Nate. After being confronted by a gloating Ruby, Moira trapped them both in the barn and nearly had them killed – burning it to the ground after hallucinating visions of Emma Barton.

Moira’s reckless behaviour and subsequent seizures were eventually attributed to a brain tumour. While she resisted the idea of an operation to remove it, she eventually relented after weeks of agony – including Zak Dingle’s death, more seizures and some dead cattle.

Thankfully, now she has a date for the operation. But will fear get the better of Moira?

Spoilers: Concerns grow for Billy over his determination to fight

Billy Fletcher has his friends worried in Emmerdale spoilers next week, as his determination to earn money through fighting grows. With Billy taking part in another unlicensed match, both Mackenzie and John grow concerned for his well-being.

This comes as desperate Billy attempts to provide for Dawn and the children by taking part in unlicensed, underground boxing matches. Things haven’t been easy for the pair since doctors diagnosed little Evan with leukemia earlier this year.

The struggling dad has kept his violent second job a secret from Dawn – hiding both the fighting and subsequent injuries behind a series of (not all that convincing) lies and excuses.

But with Billy still set on his highly dangerous course of action, Mackenzie is shocked and worried for his well-being. And, even as John attempts to assist with an impromptu coaching session, he and Aaron try to talk Billy out of fighting again.

Unable to provide for Dawn and the children yet again, Billy continues to feel like a useless father. Meanwhile, Mackenzie is shocked when he learns that Billy’s boxing training is for another dangerous and unlicensed fight.

Concerned, he attempts to dissuade Billy from this violent course of action. Can he talk Billy out of fighting again?

Catching up with Billy, Mack is impressed that John’s coaching session seems to have improved Billy’s defence. But, as their concern for Billy grows, John enlists Aaron’s help in an attempt to persuade Billy he’s in no shape to fight.

Tom, of course, has a history of abuse towards anyone and everyone he perceives as ‘weaker’ than him – from long-suffering ex-wife Belle Dingle to Piper the Pup, through to poor unsuspecting Vinnie (ouch) and little Isaac too. Carl Jr was the latest of Tom’s victims, getting in his way after seeing him smash up his tablet, which had been full of incriminating videos of Belle.

    Tom disposes of the evidence

If found, the tablet would have cleared Belle’s name. Tom‘s nasty little secret was almost revealed when Isaac stole the device, putting it in Moira’s hands. Moira then watched a few of Tom’s videos and realised exactly what he had been up to.

Unfortunately, before she could tell anyone what she had seen, Moira suffered a seizure and forgot all about the tablet. In the days which followed, Tom snuck into Butlers Farm, took the gadget back and disposed of the evidence.

This he did by smashing up the incriminating piece of equipment in his own garden. However, he’d been unaware at the time that someone had been snooping – Carl Jr, watching through the window as Tom disposed of the evidence.

Tom managed to keep Carl quiet, but for how long? And will Nicola finally begin to realise that something’s not right with Tom?
