Classic Emmerdale Viv and Bob scenes are proof killing her off is one of soap’s biggest mistakes – OPINION

Viv Hope is at the centre of the drama in the episodes of Classic Emmerdale currently airing on ITV3.

She’s just found out she’s expecting a baby. The timing isn’t great, because her stepdaughter Dawn just died in the King’s River explosion. Bob had announced he didn’t want a baby after all, just as Viv discovered she was pregnant – awks.

Viv thought her only option was to terminate, despite her longing for another child.

Thankfully on screen now Bob’s found out about the pregnancy and together he and Viv have decided to go ahead and have the baby.

But watching the scenes where Bob and Viv, along with Viv’s kids Scott and Donna, Donna’s husband Marlon, and Bob’s ex-wife Jean, all gathered together at the clinic, got me thinking.

Viv was in the middle of the action in Classic Emmerdale

Back in the noughties, the Hopes and their various children were right at the heart of Emmerdale. And at the centre of it all was Viv.

Brash and gobby she may have been, but she had a good heart. She was devoted to her family and weathered their (many!) storms. Actress Deena Payne, who played Viv, was brilliant at bringing humour to the show, but also handled tragedy deftly.

Whether Viv was getting stuck in a wheelie bin, booking a rabbit to be her wedding planner, or grieving for husband Vic, she always stole the show.

Viv died in a fire in 2011 – alongside Dawn’s ex-husband, Terry Woods.

    A real asset to Emmerdale

She was such an asset to Emmerdale and every time I see her on screen in Classic episodes I am reminded all over again that it was a mistake to kill her off.

Even actress Deena agrees! She’s pointed out that no one ever saw Viv’s body, so perhaps she’s still out there somewhere!

    Bob needs more family!

With Viv gone, the Hopes fell apart. Bob’s son Jamie left the village. Viv’s daughter Donna returned with her daughter April, then died. Bob’s daughter Carly came to the village for a while, then moved on. Son Heath was killed a year ago, and now there’s only Bob, daughter Cathy, and granddaughter April left.

“It was quite a dynasty,” says Tony Audenshaw, who plays Bob. “That has been eroded a bit and I’ve got a much smaller family.”

I can’t help thinking that the lack of Hopes in the village is another mistake. There are so many of Bob and Viv’s families who could add some interest to Emmerdale. I’d love to see his American daughter Roxy return. Or could Scott Windsor come back to the village? Recast if necessary.

What about his grandson TJ, who’d be 21 by now? What a fab addition he’d be.

    The hope for more Hopes

Tony Audenshaw is a great actor and giving him a family again would help keep him in the middle of the action, where he belongs.

Of course we love the Dingles, but there are a lot of them, and they just keep coming. And that means Emmerdale feels a bit unbalanced in my view. I’ve long argued for more Sugdens – the family that once held Emmerdale together is down to Victoria and newcomer John. And more Hopes would be the icing on the cake!

What time is Emmerdale on tonight? Soap moves in schedule again as hour-long episode is cut

Emmerdale faces another schedule change tonight, with live football coverage meaning viewers won’t be getting their usual hour-long episode at the usual time.

The ITV soap usually airs at 7.30pm on weeknights for half hour – except on Thursdays, when there is an hour-long episode.

However, tonight’s episode (Thursday, February 6) will air in an earlier slot. Here’s when you can watch Emmerdale tonight.

What time is Emmerdale on tonight?

Emmerdale will air half hour earlier tonight, at 7pm. Instead of the usual hour-long instalment, viewers will only get a 30 minute episode.

This is because from 7.30pm, ITV1 will air coverage of the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi final between Liverpool and Tottenham.

It’s been a dramatic week of Emmerdale, with the truth about April’s disappearance finally revealed. April suffered a post-partum hemorrhage after giving birth to a stillborn baby.

Viewers will be eager to find out what happens next, so the episode being on early may be welcome news. As is normal practice, episodes are also available to watch from 7am on ITVX on day of broadcast.

2 Emmerdale spoilers for tonight: Charity almost caught in the act by Kim as she breaks into Home Farm

Charity sneaks into Home Farm in search of dirt on Joe Tate in Emmerdale spoilers for tonight. Last night’s episode saw Charity grow frustrated as son Noah fell even further under Joe’s thrall.

Unbeknownst to them both, Joe has been leaving cruel messages on a review site for Noah’s electrician business, hoping to sabotage his career as the village’s resident sparky. As a confused Noah complained that he was struggling to find work in the wake of all the 1-star reviews, Joe floated an idea: move to Dubai, where the salaries are good and the apartments are free.

Noah was eager as Joe called up a contact in Dubai. Witnessing the exchange, Charity was horrified. She tried to talk Noah out of going, but only succeeded in driving a bigger wedge between herself and her son.

Determined to find out what Joe’s real game is, Charity snuck onto Home Farm. As Dawn and Joe nipped upstairs for their latest seedy tryst, Charity set about snooping. But what will she find… and will she be caught in the act by Kim?

Elsewhere, April recovers in hospital following her ordeal. Can Marlon give his daughter the love and support she needs?

What happened in Emmerdale tonight: Marlon was reunited with April as scheming Joe played games with Dawn and Noah

Marlon and Rhona were finally reunited with missing April Windsor in Emmerdale tonight. Arriving at the hospital to find her being rushed into surgery, Marlon was shocked to learn that his daughter had been pregnant when she disappeared – and suffered a stillbirth.

Meanwhile, as he continued to manipulate Noah, Joe flirted with Gabby and hooked up with Dawn again.

And, as she continued to struggle with her loneliness, Leyla struck on a bright idea. Elsewhere, Bob learned about April, and guilty parties tried to bottle up their feelings.

Here’s everything that happened on Emmerdale tonight, Wednesday, February 5.

Marlon was reunited with April in Emmerdale tonight

Following the news that April had been found, PC Swirling rushed Rhona and Marlon to the hospital. They learned in no short order that April had been admitted to Obstetrics, having suffered a post-partum hemorrhage – she’d just given birth, and the baby was stillborn.

A doctor filled them in on what had happened, telling them that April had been found on a park bench after giving birth in a local gym. She’d been hemorrhaging for a while and required a blood transfusion.

Marlon and Rhona watched in horror as she was rushed into the operating room for another DNC (dilation and curettage to those not in the know – which doesn’t include Rhona, as she rudely snapped at one of the doctors).

The operation was a success, and April stabilised. Marlon was desperate to see his daughter, but the doctors stressed the importance of giving her time.

Walking into her room to find April recovering in bed, Marlon finally reunited with his daughter. “We don’t have to talk just yet,” he told his daughter, as he refused to stop talking.

Dawn grew jealous as Joe flirted with Gabby

At Home Farm, Kim listened in to Joe’s recent Siri searches (the temperature in Dubai, advice on a good peanut butter and jam bagel). She was interrupted by Gabby, who had also been thinking about hunky Joe. As Kim attempted to warn her off, in strolled Dawn and then Sam (the Home Farm drawing room is busier than Euston Station this morning!) who informed her that one of the horses wasn’t feeling too hot.

Meanwhile, taking note that Gabby had eyes for Joe, Dawn took keen interest. Is that a hint of jealousy we detect?

Joe continued to make Dawn jealous by flirting with Gabby throughout the day. As he and Dawn swapped barbs on the stairs, it wasn’t long before the pair ended up in each other’s arms.

Meanwhile, at the Dingles’, it was clear that Gabby was having second thoughts about her man. Settling down for dinner with Vinny, Sam, Lydia and Mandy, the chaotic, farty scene was a far cry from glamourous Home Farm with suave Joe.

Back at Home Farm, Dawn immediately had regrets over cheating on Billy again… before they leaned in for another kiss and headed to bed for round two.

Charity stewed as Noah planned his next move

In The Woolpack, Noah despaired as he continued to lose customers. Joe’s poison pen letters have been having the desired effect, and Noah’s business is suffering.

“People can be vindictive,” said Joe as he consoled his half-brother. Singing the praises of an electrician’s salary in Dubai, Joe continued to lay the seeds for his big plan. Listening in, Charity was alarmed.

She was having none of Noah’s move to Dubai – and her attempt to deter her son only seemed to have the opposite effect.

Later, as Joe and Dawn slunk off to bed together, Charity snuck into Home Farm. But what will she find?

In the shop, Pollard shamed Leyla for buying a frozen lasagna for one. As she lied about her date with Suzy, Pollard began to twig that she’s feeling more lonely than she’s letting on.

    Also on Emmerdale tonight…

John worried for Aaron’s mental well-being as he beat seven shades out of a steak. He tried to encourage him to open up, but stubborn Aaron was having none of it for now. Is Aaron bottling up something terrible?

Meanwhile, Ruby told Caleb that she was headed out for a spot of late-night shopping. He was worried about her well-being, but she too is determined to put on a brave front.

Elsewhere, Mary told Leo that he needed to apologise for his behaviour at school. Sending him off to grab some crisps as Bob arrived, she informed him of April’s situation.

What exactly does Joe have planned for Noah? Top theories explored

Tonight’s episode of Emmerdale saw scheming Joe Tate continue to put a plan into motion – driving a wedge between Noah and Charity, setting him up with a job in Dubai. And, as Charity attempted to keep her son from leaving the village, she succeeded only in making him more determined to go.

This comes after a week of scheming for shifty Joe. On Monday, Joe sabotaged Noah’s business by leaving a series of negative reviews on the internet. And tonight (Wednesday, February 5) dismayed Noah was swayed by Joe’s stories of a high salary and free apartment in Dubai.

But what exactly does Joe have planned for Noah? Here are all the fan theories so far.

Joe and Noah in the Woolpack on Emmerdale
Joe wants something from Noah… but what? (Credit: ITV)

Emmerdale fans think Joe wants a kidney from Noah

The most popular theory so far is that Joe wants Noah for his organs. Sick Joe is clearly struggling with a mystery illness and, between his painkiller addiction and secretive phone calls, he won’t be able to keep it under wraps for much longer.

“Does Joe wanna kidnap Noah & nick a kidney – or something worse?” asked one fan on X.

“Bet Joe is buttering up Noah because he’s in need of an organ donor,” said another.

Could Joe be planning on taking Noah away to Dubai, where a private surgeon – and no meddling from Charity – awaits?

    He’s in league with Debbie

Another suggestion is that Joe is in league with a figure from his past. One of the many names floated is Noah’s own half-sister, Debbie.

“What if Joe and Debbie reconnected and that’s why Joe tries to get Noah to move to Dubai because that’s where she’s going to move to?” one fan asked.

Why Joe and Debbie would want or need to get Noah to Dubai isn’t clear, but fans remain convinced that Joe’s not working alone. Whether it’s Debbie, Jamie or Jean, Noah seems to be integral to their plan.

Charity points angrily at Joe on Emmerdale

He wants revenge on Charity and Kim

Joe is clearly relishing Charity’s frustration at his reconnecting with Noah. Could Charity’s discomfort be the whole point of his scheme, rather than a side effect of it?

“It’s interesting to see the nasty side to Joe come back out. I wasn’t convinced by his Mr. Nice Guy act. Not sure his agenda though, revenge on Kim & Charity?” asked one viewer.

“Ooh we think Joe is out to topple Kim,” said another.

Quite why Kim would care about him taking Noah to Dubai is unclear at this stage, but viewers have their suspicions. Kim too, if her recent room-bugging antics are anything to go by.

Emmerdale fans spot huge ‘flaw’ in April special episode as stabbing victim revealed

Fans of Emmerdale have been left baffled by an apparent plot hole in last night’s episode – in which the soap revealed what had become of missing teenager April Windsor. As PC Swirling told Marlon and Rhona that the police had located his daughter, a heartbreaking flashback showed her experiences on the streets of Leeds.

Quickly finding herself without money and with nowhere to go, April fell in with two other homeless youths – Dylan and Bex. Staying with the pair at the dilapidated building they were sheltered in, April found trust and friendship. Together, they soon fell into a daily routine.

    However, tragedy was in store.

Bex dies as April looks on in Emmerdale

It was while April and Bex were begging on the streets of Leeds that a mugger attacked, stealing April’s things. Bex gave chase – and the mugger stabbed her.

She was rushed to hospital, where she later died. Viewers will have noticed that this makes Bex the same young girl that Jacob mistakenly identified as April last month – and explains how she came by April’s ID.

However, it doesn’t explain everything. And some fans have been left confused by the logistics of it all.

What was Bex doing in Hotten, fans wonder

Writing on social media as the episode aired, fans registered their confusion. And many wondered how Bex had bypassed Leeds to end up in Hotten.

“If April ran away to a big city (Leeds?), how did the girl she was staying with who got killed end up in Hotten General?” asked one fan.

“So if it was Bex who they mistook for April, why would she have been in the A&E miles away?” another wondered.

“Why didn’t they take that lass to Leeds A&E?” said a third.

“Is that the girl that was brought into Emmerdale’s nearest hospital when she was stabbed in Leeds? What a load!” another exclaimed.

A curious misstep for an episode many have hailed as one of the soap’s most powerful.

  • No, the father of April’s baby in Emmerdale wasn’t Ross or Anthony – here’s why

No, the father of April’s baby in Emmerdale wasn’t Ross or Anthony – here’s why

Last night’s episode of Emmerdale had fans questioning who the father of April’s baby might be – as the soap revealed that the missing teenager had fallen pregnant prior to running away from home on Christmas Day 2024. As fans reeled from the bombshell news, a number of theories soon emerged as to who the father might be.

From the list of suspects, two names proved popular – recently murdered predator Anthony Fox, and local hardman Ross Barton. With Anthony’s evil past having recently resurfaced, some have wondered whether he might have victimised young April prior to his own disappearance.

And then there’s Ross, who April bonded with in the days shortly before running away. These facts, combined with April’s obvious trauma, led some to wonder whether either man could have groomed the vulnerable teenager.

Lateral thinking – but extremely unlikely. Here’s why those particular fan theories might not hold water.

Anthony's claim left Ruby reeling (Credit: ITV)
Viewers are wondering whether Anthony could have attacked April (Credit: ITV)

The timeline doesn’t add up for Anthony

Anthony first arrived in the village in November. April disappeared two months later, and gave birth in last night’s episode. The timing of this alone, would seem to rule him out.

Anthony’s past may have earned him a bashing from Laurel, but he had been on his best behaviour since getting his feet under Ruby and Caleb’s table. Indeed, he seemed far more concerned with tormenting Ruby and making in-roads with Steph than anything else.

“It’s more likely to be Anthony but considering he did nothing to Angel and his abuse seems based on only ruby it also seems less likely,” wrote one fan in a Reddit thread.

“If one more person says Anthony is the dad I will lose it,” said another, less diplomatically.

    Ross would never

The timeline for Ross doesn’t add up either, with the village hardman returning to the soap in October. But beyond that, there’s a far more solid reason why it can’t be him – he would never.

“Ross is many things but a nonce is not one of them,” wrote one fan.

“I don’t think Ross would do that. Cain got away with sleeping with a 15 year old girl. If that was Ross and April, Ross wouldn’t,” another agreed.

Who’s the father of April’s baby in Emmerdale?

Who the father turns out to be remains to be seen. But it’s far more likely that it’s an as-yet unknown figure – perhaps from April’s school, or a man she met on social media.

Whoever it was, April has a long road to recovery ahead. Can Marlon and Rhona provide their daughter with the support and understanding she needs?

Fans demand Amelia Flanagan gets ‘all the awards’ as April’s trauma is revealed

Fans of Emmerdale have heaped praise upon star Amelia Flanagan following her performance as April in last night’s harrowing episode. This came as the soap revealed what had become of the teenager during the four weeks of her disappearance.

As she took to the streets of Leeds, April found herself lost and with nowhere to turn – falling in with a group of homeless youths. It was then that viewers learned April was pregnant.

And, as her situation went from bad to worse, April suffered a stillbirth in a nearby gym. She then passed out on a park bench, which is where she was found and subsequently rushed to the hospital.

Amid this very special episode, viewers had nothing but praise for its young star.

“Amelia Flanagan made a great job of that difficult story. Hard as it is to believe April thinking life on the streets better than her loving home, there’s no doubting the quality of this episode,” a third said.

Emmerdale fans stunned as Karen Blick appears in Classic episodes and is unrecognisable

Classic Emmerdale fans were amazed to spot a familiar – yet somehow very different – face as Karen Blick appeared in yesterday’s episode (Tuesday, February 4).

In the episode, which originally aired in August 2006, Viv was wrestling with her pregnancy.

She had been desperate for a baby and had even planned for Donna to be her surrogate. But then had discovered she was actually expecting.

Though it should have been good news, the death of her stepdaughter Dawn in the King’s River explosion changed everything.

    Viv made a decision

Bob – who didn’t know about Viv’s pregnancy at that point – declared he could never have another child after losing Dawn.

And so, worried that carrying on with the pregnancy would mean the end of her marriage, Viv had planned an abortion.

But her daughter Donna knew the truth and she told her husband Marlon, and her brother Scott, and then Bob’s ex-wife Jean found out…

And everyone knew Viv didn’t really want to terminate her pregnancy. And they also thought Bob should know. So while Donna accompanied her mum to the clinic, the rest of the family weren’t far behind.

A familiar face as Karen Blick spotted in Classic Emmerdale

A kindly nurse took care of Viv as she arrived and fans were stunned to see she was played by Karen Blick – who we now know as Lydia Dingle.

Back then, Karen was blonde, and looked quite different from her alter-ego Lydia.

Fans on Reddit expressed how surprised they were to see Karen playing a different role.

“I know it was nearly 19 years ago but she really does look different with that hair colour!,” said one stunned viewer.

While another said: “It’s one of my favourite things about watching Classic Emmerdale, spotting future permanent cast members.”

    Happy ever after?

In the end, Bob and Viv had a long heart-to-heart as the rest of the family waited in the hall.

And he eventually said he wanted to keep the baby – he was ready to be a dad again.

    Hooray!

So now Viv and Bob are happily looking forward to their future together. Of course the downside of watching these Classic Emmerdale episodes from 2006 is that we know it’s not going to be happy ever after for them, or their unborn babies.

But we do know Karen Blick will show up again, even though she’ll look very different!

Emmerdale usually airs weeknights on ITV at 7.30pm.
