Emmerdale and Coronation Street episodes cut and time slots changed – I think it’s the right move to save the soaps – OPINION

Emmerdale and Coronation Street are having their episodes cut and their time slots changed, ITV has announced today. Some might think it signals the soaps are on their way out, but I think it’s the best move the channel could have made.

For months we’ve had reports of Emmerdale and Coronation Street being in crisis. Large numbers of big-name cast departures have set fans on edge over the future of their favourite serial dramas.

And now ITV has made its latest announcement, there is more panic amongst viewers.

ITV announces cuts for episodes of Emmerdale and a new time slot

From January 2026, both Emmerdale and Coronation Street will be part of a soaps ‘power hour’. Both will air every day, Monday to Friday and both will be just 30 minutes long.

Emmerdale’s new time slot is at 8pm, with Corrie following at 8.30pm. They will continue to drop at 7am on ITVX.

All this means there is five hours of each soap per week rather than six.

ITV’s managing director of media and entertainment, Kevin Lygo said of the move: “The new commissioning pattern is viewer-led. We already give more choice than ever to viewers on how they watch us through ITVX and we want to present their favourite soap to them, in the most digestible way.

“In a world where there is so much competition for viewers’ time and attention, and viewing habits continue to change, we believe this is the right amount of episodes that fans can fit into their viewing schedule, to keep up to date with the shows.”

He added: “Research insights also show us that soap viewers are increasingly looking to the soaps for their pacey storytelling. Streaming-friendly, 30 minute episodes better provide the opportunity to meet viewer expectations for storyline pace, pay-off and resolution.”

On the impact on the teams, Kevin assured they will “support our colleagues in ITV Studios as they work through these changes, and will do what we can to mitigate the impact on our people.”

He also admitted the move is in line with their budget constraints so they can invest more in programming at ITV.

A cut in Emmerdale and Coronation Street episodes means less commitment

Although some may think this is the beginning of the end for the ITV soaps, I really don’t think it is. I think the channel has taken a very sensible decision to move with the times in order to safeguard the future of our favourite shows.

I have been a soap journalist for over 20 years and I love them all (most of the time!), but with a young family and a full-time job, I simply cannot commit to the amount of episodes per week. The hour-long Corrie three times a week is a definite struggle, that’s for sure. And I’m positive many others feel the same.

Of course, with the arrival of the eps on ITVX, it has become much easier to watch them in our own time. But still, the commitment is huge – go away for a week and I’m so behind, I feel like I’ll never catch up.

It’s not just the amount of time, but psychologically half an hour as opposed to an hour feels more like you can fit it in. Even if in reality, you’re only losing 60 minutes in total a week, it all seems more manageable.

    Get rid of the deadwood!

Kevin’s point about the pace of storytelling is also a good one. Take the recent April going missing plot. It has felt like we have spent a looooong time listening to Marlon crying. We all know that in reality these things do go on for a long time, however, as viewers we don’t always want to see it. Soaps have some level of poetic licence to speed things up – and 30 minute episodes help do just that.

But at the same time, it will also help us invest in the storylines more. Whilst I would never wish anyone out of a job, it’s fair to say there is some deadwood in both Emmerdale and Corrie that they could do without (naming no names!)

This move means the soaps can now focus on the characters we love, we can invest in them more, rather than the ‘filler’ plots being used to make up the time.

Will the move work for the ITV soaps?

Look at Hollyoaks: they completely changed their schedule in September 2024. They dropped from five to three episodes a week with the eps being streamed online before being shown on E4. It also moved from Channel 4 altogether. Everyone thought it was the beginning of the end – but it turned out to be the smartest move the soap could have made.

The move was made in line with changing viewer habits for their core 16-24 year old audience. Their viewing figures have risen, with them finishing 2024 23 percent up on where they were for 2023. I’d consider that a win.

And I think this cut to Emmerdale and Coronation Street is the right move for ITV to save the soaps from disappearing altogether.

  • ITV announces all-new schedule for 2026 as Emmerdale airs in later slot for ‘soap power hour’

ITV announces all-new schedule for 2026 as Emmerdale airs in later slot for ‘soap power hour’

ITV has announced a new Emmerdale schedule for 2026 – with the introduction of what is being called a soaps ‘power hour’ starting from next January. Viewers already know that the soap currently airs on ITV from 7:30pm – 8pm on weekdays, with an hour-long episode on Thursdays…. but that’s set to change next year.

The broadcaster has revealed plans to shake up schedules with an all-new viewing schedule. This will be a big-shake up for the soap’s sister series, Coronation Street, whose episodes will be slashed to half an hour.

But what does this mean for Emmerdale?

ITV releases plans for new Emmerdale schedule in 2026

In good news for fans of the soap, Emmerdale will continue to air five nights a week. New episodes will also drop on ITVX every morning at 7am as usual – meaning we don’t have to wait all day for the outcome of big stories such as Anthony’s murder or April’s disappearance.

However, the soap will move to a new time slot at 8pm. Producers have also slashed the Thursday double bill to make way for additional episodes of Coronation Street.

This ensures faster-paced, digestible episodes – a 30-minute format which has already proven popular with viewers.

ITV boss reveals ‘soap power hour’ amid schedule shake-up

Revealing details of the plan, ITV’s Managing Director of Media and Entertainment Kevin Lygo said: “In a world where there is so much competition for viewers’ time and attention, and viewing habits continue to change, we believe this is the right amount of episodes that fans can fit into their viewing schedule, to keep up to date with the shows.”

He continued: “Research insights also show us that soap viewers are increasingly looking to the soaps for their pacey storytelling. Streaming-friendly, 30 minute episodes better provide the opportunity to meet viewer expectations for storyline pace, pay-off and resolution.

“Whilst viewing is growing on ITVX, we know a significant proportion of our soaps’ audience still watch us via the schedule. This new pattern is in the DNA of the soap genre – nobody else does 30 minute drama this successfully.”

He added: “It creates a soap power hour that’s consistent, and easy to find in the linear schedule, for the UK’s biggest soaps.”

With so much still on the cards for 2025 (including that big limo crash) it’s a bold move. But can viewers get on board?

  • Jo Sugden in Emmerdale: From man-eating minx to abused wife

Jo Sugden in Emmerdale: From man-eating minx to abused wife

Jo Sugden was the manipulative man-stealer who ended up being a victim of domestic violence at the hands of her husband Andy.

Jo made some friends, and a lot of enemies in her three years in Emmerdale, but when things got tricky, the locals all stepped up for her.

Here’s everything that happened in her time in the village.

Jo Stiles (Jo Sugden) in Emmerdale

    Jo’s arrival in Emmerdale

Jo Stiles came to Emmerdale as the new receptionist at the vet’s and immediately caught the eye of some of the men in the village!

She hit it off with Danny Daggert but after they went on a date, he agreed he was too tame for a bad girl like Jo! And from there, it was clear Jo was trouble.

She invented an online girlfriend for Paddy. Jo had good intentions but things backfired when Paddy announced he was off to Portugal to meet Fireblade – the woman Jo had invented.

When Paddy came home with a woman called Toni, who claimed to be Fireblade, Jo was worried. She knew that Toni wasn’t Fireblade, but to point it out would mean admitting she’d been catfishing poor Paddy.

As it turned out, Toni was Danny’s cousin, and she and Paddy had twigged what Jo was doing and were paying her back!

Jo seduces Andy in the hay

    Jo’s affair with Andy

Jo moved into Butler’s with Andy Sugden and his former wife Katie, who had reconciled but were struggling financially. There was chemistry between Jo and Andy, and eventually they began an affair.

When Katie found out, she was furious and moved out. Jo lost her job at the vet’s after she uncovered some dodgy dealings with invoices. Hari – the vet who was doing the dodgy dealings – fired Jo to keep his own secrets.

But despite that, Jo and Andy seemed happy. They even got engaged! But their wedding plans were disrupted when Andy confessed to arson!

He fessed up to setting the fire that killed his adoptive mum Sarah Sugden. Andy was sentenced to three years in prison and instead of their dream wedding, he and Jo tied the knot behind the walls of the jail.

    Jo Sudgen all alone

While Andy was inside, Jo carried on looking after his daughter, Sarah, but they ran into trouble when Andy’s old cellmate Charlie Sellers arrived. He began harassing Jo and little Sarah, and making threats.

Terrified, Jo went to Sarah’s mum, Debbie Dingle, and asked for help. With some assistance from Chas, and local crime family the Macfarlanes, they scared Charlie off.

When Andy was paroled, he wanted Jo to adopt Sarah, but Debbie didn’t do the paperwork. Andy was fuming, but Jo let Debbie spend time with her daughter.

When Andy found out, he angrily went to get Sarah back. Jo tried to stop him, and he accidentally slapped her, giving her a black eye. Andy was horrified – or so he said – and promised never to do it again.

But things actually got much worse. Andy continued to hit Jo, even sending her to hospital.

Sweet-natured Sam Dingle realised what was happening, but when he told his family they didn’t believe him, until Sarah drew a disturbing picture!

    Spinning lies

Desperate to stop the violence, Jo lied that she was pregnant. But of course Andy realised she wasn’t telling the truth and another scuffle broke out. This time, Jo retaliated, shoving Andy. He stumbled on to a farm tool and was impaled! Jo fled the scene, but Andy’s brother Daz found him and called an ambulance.

Andy managed to spin the whole thing to make himself appear the victim.

It was Val who managed to get through to Andy’s stepmum, Diane, in the end. And once Diane realised Jo was telling the truth, Katie followed after Andy got verbally abusive with her, too.

Realising she’d never be free of Andy, Jo planned to leave. She originally wanted to take little Sarah with her, but changed her mind at the last minute, and left the tot with Debbie instead.

After she’d gone, Jo gave a statement about Andy’s violence as part of his battle with Debbie for custody of Sarah. Jo’s written evidence meant Andy withdrew his application for custody. His divorce from Jo was finalised off-screen in 2009.

    Who played Jo?

Jo Sugden was played by Roxanne Pallett. She’d appeared in Hollyoaks and A&E before she joined Emmerdale.

The truth is finally out – and tonight’s episode of Emmerdale saw Cain Dingle learn that it was Ruby who killed Anthony. Cain’s suspicions grew after seeing the tension between Chas and Caleb. He quickly realised that the pair were hiding something from him.

Determined to get to the bottom of things, he popped around to see Caleb. After a brief distraction – Caleb turned the whole thing on its head by demanding to know whether Cain had slept with his wife – he revealed the whole truth.

Cain learned the truth about Anthony on Emmerdale tonight

As a stunned Cain learned, Anthony was dead, and it was Ruby who had killed him – after a beating from Aaron, of course. That makes a sixth who knows the truth (so far: Ruby, Caleb, Aaron, John and Chas), but  possibly the best move Caleb could have made.

Here’s why bringing Cain on board is the best move they could have made.

From kidnapping to attempted murder, he’s done it all

If there’s one thing this confederacy of dunces could use, it’s someone with a cool head. There’s John, of course, but he might be a bit too cool…

He may have mellowed over the years, but Cain is nothing if not experienced. Whether it’s kidnapping Tom and Sadie king or kidnapping Lydia’s rapist, Cain has a history of violence. He’s also used to a bit of bloodshed, having doled out his fare share of beatings over the years.

While none of the group are strangers to crime, Cain was a prolific criminal in his time and an old hat at avoiding police consequences.

    He’s covered up murder before

This isn’t Cain Dingle’s first rodeo. In 2022, Cain covered up the true identity of Al Chapman’s murderer. This came after his own son, little Kyle, shot Al dead in a misguided attempt to protect his father.

Determined not to let Kyle go down for a death that was mostly his fault anyway, Cain took the fall for killing Al. He would have seen it through too, if Kyle hadn’t confessed to the murder himself.

Cain knows how to keep a secret… and lie about it

He had a wobble for a while there, but Cain managed to get over his guilt over cheating with Moira to get himself back on an even keel. When questioned by Caleb, he denied everything – telling his brother that Anthony’s words were another lie from a cornered abuser.

Many might have crumbled, but not Cain. The confidence of his denial seemed to assuage Caleb’s worries (he even wanted to hug it out afterwards) and bodes well for Cain as a co-conspirator.

He put his talent for deceit to good use later in the episode, telling the police that he’d seen Anthony in the village after the date of his apparent disappearance. This cleared Laurel and got the investigation shut down, for now.

    He looks after his own

With both Caleb and Aaron’s future on the line, Cain will keep their secret with everything he’s got. After finding Caleb about to shoot Anthony, Cain went as far as to offer to help him finish the job.

It turns out Ruby already had that covered, but Cain was quick to offer an alibi to Caleb if he had, hypothetically, killed Anthony. And, as Caleb revealed the truth tonight, Cain’s reaction proved that he’s a man of his word.

    He’s competent

If Cain was annoyed about anything, it was the sheer incompetence of those around him. Learning that Aaron and John had used his garage to disassemble Anthony’s car, he was left fuming.

After all, this had already attracted the attention of nosy neighbour Manpreet, who had a few choice words to say. Former career criminal Cain would never be so careless, and he told Aaron as such. With a keen eye for staging a crime and covering up its aftermath, there’s no-one you want on your side more than Cain Dingle.

He can keep his mouth shut

If there’s one thing we know about Cain, it’s that he’s no grass. This was evident in 2012, when he was attacked and left for dead by his own dad, Zak.

When Zak admitted that it had been he who’d hospitalised Cain with a crowbar, Cain was heartbroken. However, family loyalty (and a little bit of guilt, perhaps) held true, and he agreed to drop the charges against Jai, who’d previously been in the frame.

Cain should take fall for killing Anthony on Emmerdale, fans demand

And, if all that fails, he’d make a good patsy for Anthony’s murder. Some might think he’s overdue a comeuppance by now anyway, having gotten away with enough shady business of his own as it is.

As PC Swirling confirms that April has been found, here’s what happens next

Emmerdale tonight saw Marlon and Rhona receive the news that April Windsor has been found. But where has she been and what happens next?

Following multiple arguments with her family, April disappeared from her home on Christmas Day, leaving dad Marlon Dingle going out of his mind with worry.

The only sighting came from some CCTV in Leeds. Marlon trawled the city streets looking for her, but to no avail.

However, in tonight’s episode (Monday, February 3), PC Swirling delivered the news that April has been found. Here’s what happens next.

April was found in Emmerdale tonight

In tonight’s episode of Emmerdale, Marlon continued to act erratically and snap at those close to him following April’s disappearance.

But following pep talks from Ross, Paddy and Rhona, Marlon tried to put more effort in at home and settled into a chat with Leo.

However, they were interrupted by PC Swirling, who came bearing news.

When PC Swirling encouraged Marlon and Rhona to sit down, the couple immediately feared the worst. He then revealed: “It’s April. We’ve found her.”

    What happens next in Emmerdale?

Emmerdale has revealed that a special flashback episode will show what April has been through since leaving the Dales.

The standalone episode is set to air on Tuesday, February 4 and will recount April’s heartbreaking journey on the streets.

Emmerdale producer Laura Shaw said: “April’s flashback episode is a heartbreaking depiction of life on the street as a teenage girl. Continuing to take guidance from the fabulous team at Missing People, it was incredibly important that we didn’t shy away from the agonising journey that April would go through. Their help was invaluable in making sure the episode has the authenticity required.

She added: “Amelia Flanagan‘s outstanding performance makes this arguably, one of Emmerdale’s stand out episodes of this year and promises to start a new journey for the character of April, forever changed by her time living on the city streets.”

Spoilers later in the week reveal Marlon and Rhona feel overwhelmed after recent events. Will things ever go back to normal for the family?

What happened in Emmerdale tonight: Caleb confronted Cain over sleeping with Ruby and April was found

A suspicious Caleb Dingle confronted Cain over his alleged affair with Ruby on Emmerdale tonight. Elsewhere, a battered and bruised Marlon hit an all-new low in his search for April. However, a visit from PC Swirling brought some shocking news – April has been found! But in what state is she in?

Elsewhere, manipulative Joe played games with Dawn and Noah, and Cain got to work tidying up his family’s mess.

Here’s everything that happened on Emmerdale tonight, January 3.

Caleb demanded answers in Emmerdale tonight

A stressed-out Moira struggled with the breakfast routine with the kids until Cain stepped in to help. Enjoy that toast, Cain, it’s the last bit of normalcy you’ll have for a while.

Later, things were frosty between Caleb and Chas – and the mood remained tense when Cain arrived, with a grumpy Chas telling him to focus on Moira. Sensing that something was amiss between the pair, he questioned Caleb later.

Backed into a corner, Caleb told him about the work in the garage – and asked him to play along. As Cain demanded to know what was going on, Caleb finally dropped the question which had been playing on his mind since confronting Anthony: “did you sleep with my wife?”

Cain denied it all, of course. Pushing to know where he’d gotten such a story from, Caleb admitted that it had come from Anthony. It was then that the sorry truth came out. He told Cain that Ruby had killed her father and, after a promise that the pair would always have each other’s back, they hugged it out.

    Cain covered Aaron’s tracks

In the pub, a peeved Manpreet confronted Cain over his late-night garage noises. He then stormed over to see Aaron and Chas, tearing them a new one for their carelessness in disposing of the car.

Afterwards, Cain paid a visit to the police station, informing them that he had some information on Anthony’s whereabouts. Whatever he said clearly did the job – with the police closing the investigation after learning that Anthony had been spotted the day after Laurel’s attack.

    Ross confronts Marlon on Emmerdale

Ross tried to get through to Marlon

Rhona and her mum worried about Marlon. He’d been out all night searching for April, and Ross seemed none the wiser. He was clearly covering for Marlon and Leo wasn’t buying it – throwing a shoe at Ross (who throws a shoe?)

The family aren’t coping well, and Mary was starting to worry about the affect Marlon’s quest was having on Rhona and the kids. Where was Marlon amidst all of this? Hiding behind a hedge.

The coast seemingly clear, he returned home – sporting a fresh black eye. Having spotted Marlon skulking home, Ross followed, demanding to know what had happened.

Following a girl he momentarily thought might have been April, Marlon scored a black eye for his trouble. Ross urged Marlon to ease off and take care of his family.

For a moment, it looked like he’d gotten through to Marlon – but succeeded only in getting himself a job as Marlon’s driver.

    April has been found!

The family trouble kept coming as Rhona learn that Leo had gotten in trouble at school for fighting with a schoolmate. The next morning, an exhausted-looking Marlon revealed he’d been out all night again  – alone.

Rhona and Marlon shared a heart-to-heart as he sat despondently in April’s bedroom. Needless to say, he didn’t take it well when she suggested he step back from the search a little for Leo and Ivy’s sake.

Storming off, he paid a visit to Donna’s grave. After brushing off Charles, Marlon was given food for thought from a concerned Paddy. At the surgery, he apologised to Rhona for his behaviour.

Answers were at hand when PC Swirling arrived at the family home with news on April. She’s been found, but the look on PC Swirling’s face suggests that her story won’t be a happy one.

Joe won Dawn over with stories of his painkiller withdrawal (Credit: ITV)

    Joe was playing games

Things were tense between Joe and Dawn. He tried to win her over by bragging about how he was off the painkillers and had just attended his first meeting.

Picking up on the pair’s heavy flirting, Kim warned Joe away from Dawn. Hoping to throw her off the scent, he told her about his painkiller addiction.

Later, he set up a cinema date with Noah. Hanging up on his half-brother, he then logged onto Noah’s trader page and left him a 1-star review for his services as an electrician. “LEFT THE JOB HALF DONE. GOT NASTY WHEN I COMPLAINED. UNSAFE AND AGGRESSIVE. AVOID,” Joe wrote in his finest all-caps.

He was all ears as Noah asked his advice in the Hide. Back at home (farm) his flirting with Dawn continued. Kim wasn’t the only one to pick up on the vibes between the pair – Gabby’s on to them too.

    Also on Emmerdale tonight…

Sarah was dressed up to the nines for a date with Jacob. She was left disappointed when he blew her off for his duties at the hospital. Instead, she swung by the hospital to show Jake what he was missing.

Belle swung by to see Leyla and Suzy on Emmerdale – and decided that the time’s right for her to come back to work. Between Suzy’s lunch plans and her son’s new romance, Leyla is clearly feeling lonely.
