In Classic Emmerdale spoilers for episodes airing on ITV3 today (Thursday, January 23), Alice Dingle says her final, sad goodbye as Sam helps her end her life.
These episodes originally aired on July 31 and August 1 2006.

Goodbye, Alice
It’s a sad day for the Dingles as Alice realises it’s time for her to say goodbye to her family. She asks Sam to help her die, and he can’t deal with her request.
But after a chat with Marlon, about him losing Tricia, Sam comes to understand why Alice is asking him to help her and he agrees.
Marlon gets hold of the morphine that Sam needs, with a bit of help from cousin Eli, while Alice – unbeknownst to the Dingles – says her final goodbye.
Sam fills the syringe with morphine, and Alice passes away in his arms.
Jasmine needs money
The next day, pregnant Jasmine goes back to the doctor and asks for a private abortion. But she’s shocked to find out it’ll cost £500.
With no income of her own, she’s forced to ask her family for the cash. Will they realise why she needs the money?
Classic Emmerdale: Is Sam coping?
At the Dingles’ house, the family are united as they vow no one will ever find out the truth about Alice’s death.
Zak warns Sam about the consequences of his actions, but the family are all relieved when the doctor writes out the death certificate. But Sam’s in agony as he watches Alice’s video in today’s Classic Emmerdale.

Alice Dingle takes her last breaths in Classic Emmerdale today, in what is one of soap’s saddest ever deaths.
When the episode was aired originally, back in the summer of 2006, it was quite controversial.
Here’s everything you need to know about Alice’s tragic death.
Sam agreed to help Alice die (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)
How did Alice die in Classic Emmerdale?
Alice was diagnosed with cancer shortly after finding out she was pregnant. The doctors advised her to terminate her pregnancy so she could start treatment, but Alice refused.
Instead, she waiting to start her chemotherapy until she had given birth to baby Samson in January 2006.
But by then the cancer was too advanced and Alice went downhill. As her suffering increased, she made the decision to end her own life.
With no treatment left that could cure her, Alice came home to die – sleeping in the Dingles’ lounge with her family around her. But she could no longer walk, or go outside, and so she asked Sam to speed up her death.

Did Sam kill Alice?
Sam wasn’t in favour of helping Alice to die at first. He told Alice he couldn’t kill the person he loved more than anything else in the world.
But after a chat with Marlon – who’d lost his wife Tricia a few years before – Sam decided he would do as Alice asked.
Newcomer Eli Dingle got the drugs Sam needed, at Marlon’s request, and Sam helped Alice to end it all.
Alice slipped away in Sam’s arms, with little Samson beside her.

Sam arrested
Sam was briefly arrested for helping his wife die. But in typical Dingle fashion the family all stood together and each confessed to the crime. Eventually it was Cain who took the blame in order to stop social services stepping in and taking baby Samson away from his dad.
Was the Classic Emmerdale storyline controversial?
At the time, there had only been on other assisted death in soap. When Ethel Skinner was diagnosed with terminal cancer, in EastEnders, she asked her friend Dot Cotton to help her die.
Alice’s story, especially her being a young mum, was more controversial and it was debated in the media. But it proved a hit with fans and Ursula Holden Gill, who played Alice, was nominated for the Best Actress award at the 2007 British Soap Awards.
Since then there have been more assisted dying stories in soap. Hayley Cropper took her own life with the help of husband Roy in Coronation Street, and Aaron Dingle helped his boyfriend Jackson Walsh to die. Faith Dingle also ended her life by stockpiling her medication.
The storylines are always controversial, and very emotional! We’re still sobbing over Alice’s tragic death.

Emmerdale tonight revealed Anthony had not been shot and escaped Caleb (who also survived). But then the vile abuser found himself cornered by Aaron…
Also, Caleb was struggling to process the revelation about Cain and Ruby. He didn’t confront his family, but can he get past it?
Elsewhere, Nicola and Laurel were still panicking and Joe and Dawn were covering up.
Here’s everything that happened in Emmerdale tonight, Wednesday January 22.
The gunshot outcome was revealed in Emmerdale tonight

Cain ran to save the day
Cain ran into the barn to find out why a gun went off. He saw Anthony running away and Caleb holding a gun. It turned out neither Caleb nor Anthony got hit. The gun had gone off, but when Caleb bent down to pick it up, Anthony got past him. But the way Caleb was being with Cain made it clear Anthony’s revelation was playing on his mind.
Cain tried to talk some sense into Caleb, telling him to let the police deal with Anthony. But Caleb insisted that couldn’t happen as Steph could never find out the truth.
Cain offered to team up with Caleb to go after him together, but Caleb was talking in riddles. He clearly doesn’t know whether to believe Anthony’s claims over Cain and Ruby’s ‘affair’ or not, especially as Cain assured him they were blood and he always had his back.
Caleb kept it together – just
Cain took Caleb home and Ruby was horrified to see he had a gun. She told him he had to leave it and their priority must be Steph.
Caleb was still being shirty with Cain and despite Cain’s reassurance to Ruby Caleb didn’t know anything, we all know he does.
Caleb then told Ruby no one else would ever find out and Steph would never know… So how long do we reckon before Steph finds out?

Anthony confronted by someone else
Ruby was rushing around looking for Steph, desperate to make amends. But Aaron accosted her in the village and bombarded her with questions over her dad. He knew something was wrong and he’d seen the same look in her eyes he knew so well from his own experiences with his dad, Gordon.
Meanwhile, Anthony had hobbled over to the depot, but his phone battery had gone dead, so he couldn’t contact Steph. As he went inside a car pulled up and Anthony soon found Aaron waiting for him. “I think it’s about time me and you had a little chat, he told him as the credits rolled…
Nicola was on clean-up duty while Laurel struggled to cope (Credit: ITV)
Nicola went full CSI in Emmerdale tonight
Nicola and Laurel were doing a clean-up job at the house to remove the evidence. CSI superfan Nicola was on the case as Laurel was whining and staring longingly at a wine bottle.
Steph then turned up just as they finished cleaning. She wanted to know if they’d seen her grandad. Laurel was feeling sick and worried – but really it was self-defence, so we don’t know why they’re in such a panic.
Joe and Dawn put their clothes back on as they agreed to cover their liaison up (Credit: ITV)
Dawn had regrets – or did she?
Joe and Dawn got dressed after their intimate liaison, with Dawn already feeling the guilt as she did up her boots. Sidenote: how does Joe keep his carpet so white when they’re all walking around in outdoor shoes everywhere?
Anyway, Dawn wasn’t sure if she could trust Joe, but he assured her he is a changed man. Promise.
They were then unable to escape the bedroom because Lydia was directly outside hoovering. Not to bang on about carpets, but she seemed to be vaccuming that one spot for a really long time – there’ll be nothing left of it.
Joe then opened up about why he blamed Charity for his dad’s death and told Dawn his life story. He admitted he was lonely so came back to be with family.
Dawn then revealed her own past – living in a crack den and having her son taken away by social services. And Lydia finished hoovering so Dawn escaped.
But then Billy returned home with Evan and Dawn fawned over him in front of an understanding Joe. She claimed they would never sleep together again, but we all know that’s not true, don’t we?!
Joe was unfazed by Charity’s anger over the watch (Credit: ITV)
Also in Emmerdale tonight…
Charity spotted Noah’s watch and his story about getting an advance on his salary didn’t wash. She immediately went round to confront Joe. Charity insisted he drop the act and stay away from her son.
Joe had absolutely no intention of doing so, though, and immediately arranged to meet Noah for a drink. He called him ‘bro’ which was a bit disconcerting, but still.
As he went to leave, Joe had a wobble and once again we’re left wondering, what is wrong with him.

With Ruby’s abuse ordeal at the hands of her father now public knowledge, fans are calling for her son Nicky to return to Emmerdale.
Nicky Miligan left the Dales last July, but since his departure things have got a lot more serious for his family.
While Ruby Fox-Miligan continues to process what happened to her as a child, fans have begged for Nicky to come back and support his mum.
Nicky originally hid that he was Caleb’s son (Credit: ITV)
What happened to Nicky Miligan in Emmerdale?
Nicky originally hid his identity when he arrived in the village. He started a job at Home Farm as a live-in nanny as part of dad Caleb’s scheme to bring down Kim Tate.
He took the scheme so far that he was even set to marry Gabby Thomas, the mother of Kim’s grandson. However, he didn’t go through with it and admitted he was gay.
Nicky started a relationship with Suni Sharma, but they faced some opposition. When Ethan drove Nicky to rescue Suni from a homophobic crowd, he crashed the car. Ethan moved Nicky to the driving seat and run away.
Although Nicky ended up in a coma, ultimately he was fine. However, his parents took it upon themselves to get revenge on Ethan via a hit and run.
Given the emotional time Ruby is currently having, fans have wondered why Nicky hasn’t returned to offer support and have begged for him to come back.
“I would love Nicky back for this storyline actually, Imagine he’s actually the one that kills Anthony,” one fan said. While another added: “We need Nicky back!”
On Reddit, a third fan suggested a return for Nicky, with a fourth viewer speculating: “I really hope so, but he’ll probably have to be recast (unless it’s a brief stint).”
“Bring back Nicky 2025 make emmerdale great again,” demanded a fifth fan, with a sixth adding: “Wish they would bring him back , I loved him.”
Lewis Cope quit his role as Nicky (Credit: ITV)
Is a return likely?
Nicky Miligan was not killed off and his family are a big part of the soap at the moment, so a return would not only be possible, but it would make sense.
Since Nicky’s departure, Ruby has been to visit her son. When Steph arrived, she also revealed that she’d been in touch with Nicky. Therefore, it’s likely he knows what’s currently going on in his family’s lives.
Recent scenes in Emmerdale have seen news spread around the village that Nicky’s grandfather Anthony sexually abused Ruby when she was younger. It has also been revealed to viewers that Anthony is Steph’s dad.
This week sees Anthony murdered with numerous suspects in the frame. It would make sense for Nicky to return and support his family during this time.
However, Lewis Cope, who played Nicky, quit the role and has made no comment about a desire to return.

Emmerdale cast member Danny Miller has opened up about why Aaron could be driven to murder as Anthony is killed in the show.
Aaron Dingle has suffered a lot over the years. Now it seems his past is catching up with him. And the thought of anyone suffering the same abuse he did as a child is too much for him to bear.
Emmerdale cast member Danny Miller has revealed just what Aaron’s motives would be for killing Anthony, and whether he thinks Aaron is actually capable of murder.
Aaron is disgusted when he finds out the truth (Credit: ITV)
Emmerdale cast star Danny Miller on Aaron’s realisation
Back in 2016, Emmerdale embarked on a heartbreaking storyline for fan-favourite Aaron when they brought his dad back. After keeping it in for so long, Aaron finally confided in Robert Sugden about the sexual abuse he faced growing up.Â
What followed was a long and emotional journey where Aaron, with the support of the rest of his family, faced his disgusting dad in court. And thankfully, Gordon got sent down. But, his time in prison wasn’t long, as he ended up taking his own life shortly after the sentencing. Leaving Aaron with even more emotions to deal with.
Now, as Aaron has just realised the truth of what’s happened between Ruby and vile Anthony, he sees red. And wants to get revenge.
Danny Miller explained that while Aaron wasn’t aware of the situation before now, he has ‘always been wary of Anthony.’ And that could be down to ‘an instinct from experience.’
When Aaron spotted the altercation between Ruby and Anthony, he knew deep down what was going on.
Danny added: “He knows the difference of scared looks from his experience. And that’s exactly what he sees in Ruby – he sees himself.”
Danny thinks Aaron has motive for Anthony’s murder (Credit: ITV)
Could Aaron kill Anthony?
As soon as Aaron realises, Danny explains he is ‘instantly aggressive and destined for revenge.’ Not only does he see it as a chance to defend Ruby, but it’s also ‘his chance to level with Gordon. Who took the ‘coward’s way out’ as Aaron calls it.’
The revelation obviously brings back horrific times for Aaron, and Danny knows his character would worry about how to cope.
He said: “It’s pure disgust and dread as to how he’ll deal with this. And it brings back so many evil and dark memories for Aaron that he had suppressed for many years.”
We know Anthony ends up dead, so could Aaron kill him? Danny seems to think there’s plenty of reasons why he would.
“Having experienced the same abuse and disgusting acts, he never got the justice he deserved or that Gordon deserved. The motive is there in plain sight,” Danny commented.

In last night’s episode of Emmerdale Joe and Dawn took things up a notch and shared yet another kiss. And it looked like they weren’t planning on stopping.
But as another potential affair looks set to hit the village, in our opinion it’s time Dawn leaves Billy behind and focuses on something new. Because let’s face it, they were getting a bit boring.
While the Joe and Dawn plot may have been a predictable call from fans early on, it’s not really a surprise that it happened. And we know exactly who we would choose if we were Dawn.
Joe and Dawn gave into temptation (Credit: ITV)
Joe vs Billy
When Dawn first arrived in the village she brought a lot more than she does now. Since marrying Billy, it seems both their characters have taken different paths. And while at the start they worked together, we’re not quite sure they do anymore.
It could be very easy to just sweep it under the rug and continue playing happy families for the sake of their kids. But they haven’t been happy in a while.
Billy would be Dawn’s safe option. Her husband. The father of her kids. But would that be enough to keep her happy? The pair have been at odds with each other quite a lot recently.
From Billy’s secret fight club with Ross, to him not wanting to move back into Home Farm, it just hasn’t seemed like the characters work anymore. And a lot of fans have called for them to break up already.
As for Joe, he is most certainly the unpredictable and exciting route for Dawn. He has only been back in the show for one month and already has made such an impact for us viewers.
When news first dropped that he was returning, Emmerdale fans went wild as it’s something they’ve been asking for since his exit. And in a short time he has already made Dawn seem like there’s still that old character we used to love inside. So could he bring it out further?
Have Dawn and Billy run their course? (Credit: ITV)
Emmerdale: Could Joe make Dawn more exciting?
Obviously if Dawn gets herself attached to Joe, there is the mystery of what’s actually going on with him. He seems to be hiding a secret illness. So could he be lining her up to have her heart broken?
While Joe brings danger, he also brings excitement. And we do know he is good with kids (he used to be basically a step-dad to Sarah) – even though he doesn’t seem like the family man.
And honestly, when Billy finds out (it’s inevitable in soaps) this could even help his character get out of his repetitive funk.
The best course of action for Dawn is to truly sit and think if she’s happy with Billy, because we don’t think she is. And perhaps Joe is the one who could bring out her fun side once again.

Since his Christmas return, fans have been trying to work out what is going on with Joe Tate in Emmerdale, and it seems one line from an episode has caused many viewers a lot of worry that his death might be on the horizon.
Joe’s behaviour has had us all wondering if he is sick. From the attacks of pain he has when he is on his own to the painkillers he seems to be taking a lot of – he has all the signs of someone who is ill.
And after a comment he made this week, fans can’t help but think the soap has just given the biggest clue that Joe is going to die. But if he really is sick, then why has he returned to Emmerdale?
Fans worry that Joe is going to die (Credit: ITV)
Is Joe in Emmerdale going to die?
In Monday night’s episode, Joe bonded with Noah some more by giving him a watch that belonged to his dad – the only thing he has left of him. The true emotion that Joe showed really makes us believe he wants to stay close to Noah.
He told his little brother that when he wears the watch he ‘hopes you can be reminded of us.’ That line in itself was enough to cause concern. Joe got emotional and apologised to Noah for not being there for him, and assured him he was ready for ‘big brother duties.’ But it wasn’t that which worried viewers.
When Noah was telling him he does want him to be in his life, Joe was emotionally happy. But he added: ‘I’m not going anywhere. I promise.’
Soaps are good at using subtle lines to foreshadow things to come. And fans didn’t miss this one. If people weren’t concerned about Joe in Emmerdale before, then they definitely are now!
Immediately viewers took to X to see if anyone else picked up on the subtle foreshadowing, and expressed their worries that we will lose Joe Tate.
Joe has been keeping something secret (Credit: ITV)
Fans fear for Joe
One wrote: “I’m guessing Joe is going to die then after that scene with Noah.”
Another worried fan penned: “Another gorgeous Joe and Noah scene last night. But I fear a Joe Tate death was foreshadowed.”
If he is dying, then him giving the last thing he has that belonged to their dad to Noah may have been his way of tying up some loose ends.
With many theories on what’s actually wrong with him, fans are still in the dark. But some have suggested he may need a transplant and that’s the real reason he’s bonding with Noah…

In recent Classic Emmerdale scenes, Dawn Woods died following an explosion. But what happened to her son, TJ Woods?
Along with most of the village, Dawn went to the show home opening at the King’s River development. However, Sadie’s sabotage caused the house to explode.
Dawn was pulled from the wreckage, but later died from her injuries. Her son TJ with Terry Woods was just a toddler at the time, but where is he now?
TJ lost both his parents (ITV/Shutterstock)
TJ’s birth in Emmerdale
Terry Junior is the son of Dawn and Terry Woods. He was born in October 2003. Dawn had contracted German measles while pregnant, so there was concern that TJ could be deaf, but they soon received news that this wasn’t the case.
While wetting TJ’s head, Terry suffered a stroke and collapsed. Once he was allowed home from hospital, Dawn struggled to look after both him and the baby.
Dawn soon begun an affair with her stepbrother Scott, but once Terry discovered this he chucked Dawn out. A nasty custody battle over TJ then ensued.
Dawn wanted to take TJ to see her mum Jean in Spain and she warned Terry he would never see his son again. Terry called the police on Dawn to stop her leaving with their son. However, eventually, Dawn was awarded sole custody.
Jean took TJ to Morocco (Credit:ITV/Shutterstock)
What happened to TJ in Emmerdale?
TJ was two and a half when his mum Dawn was killed in the explosion. Dawn’s mum Jean accepted compensation from the King family and attempted to take TJ to Morocco.
Terry brought TJ back to the Dales, but the youngster struggled without his mum. He later contracted E-Coli, but luckily there was no lasting damage.
When TJ was 7, he became an orphan after Terry was killed in a fire. Dawn’s dad Bob Hope decided the best thing for TJ would be for him to join Jean in Morocco.
Viv had also died in the fire, leaving Bob to raise Cathy and Heath alone. Raising TJ too would have been too much for him.
Bob and Brenda took TJ to the airport. The following year, 2012, Brenda went to visit TJ, but not much has been heard of him since.
TJ was a child when he left Emmerdale (ITV/Shutterstock)
Why now is a good time for TJ to return?
TJ’s main links in Emmerdale are his grandfather Bob and auntie Cathy. Bob has been struggling recently due to it being the anniversary of his son Heath’s death.
Upcoming scenes will see Bob put on a brave face as Heath’s headstone is due to be erected. Bob and Cathy comfort each other as they reminisce about Heath.
A visit from grandson TJ could be just the medicine for Bob. TJ will be 21 now – Emmerdale has a chance to build a new character, in much the same way as they did with Joe Tate (who previously left as a child and returned as an adult.)
Bob also suffered a setback romantically recently when Wendy left the village. Could ex-wife Jean return with TJ and reignite things with her ex-husband?

*Warning: Emmerdale spoilers follow from the Wednesday January 22 episode, which is available now on ITVX, but has not yet aired on ITV*
Emmerdale spoilers from the ITVX early release episode on Wednesday January 22 have confirmed the outcome of the shooting in the barn. Anthony Fox and Caleb Miligan were last seen locked in a game of Russian Roulette that saw Caleb pointing a gun at his father-in-law’s head.
But viewers did not know who had been shot.
Anthony was not at all sorry for the hurt and pain he has caused (Credit: ITV)
What happened in Emmerdale last night?
Last night (Tuesday January 21), Caleb had tracked down Anthony and driven him to one of Moira’s barns. There he had pulled a gun on his father-in-law and demanded he tell the truth about what he did to Ruby.
Anthony tried to talk his way out of it, claimed Ruby was lying and that as a care home kid, Caleb had no idea how real families worked. But Caleb didn’t buy any of it. He loaded the gun with one bullet and every time Anthony lied or insulted Ruby, Caleb pulled the trigger.
However when Anthony finally confessed – but with no remorse whatsoever, it was revealed the gun was empty. Caleb had just wanted him to feel the same terror Ruby had all those years ago and since.
But then Caleb loaded the gun for real. Anthony played his trump card and revealed Cain and Ruby were sleeping together. In Caleb’s moment of confusion at the revelation, Anthony lunged for the weapon and it went off. The action immediately cut to Cain arriving outside. And that was the ending so we were left wondering who got shot. Was Anthony finally dead?
The gun went off in a struggle, but it was not revealed whether Caleb or Anthony got shot (Credit: ITV)
Emmerdale spoilers confirm outcome of the gunshot
Well, it turns out the answer is no. Anthony managed to escape.
The action picked up as Cain raced into the barn to find Anthony running into the fields and Caleb brandishing a gun.
Neither of them had been hit. The gun had gone off when Anthony tried to grab it off him. Caleb then bent down to pick it up, but Anthony got past him and fled.
Caleb still wanted to go after his father-in-law, but Cain talked him out of it and they headed home, where Caleb was making barbed comments about Cain being the saviour. But he didn’t confront his brother or wife over what he had been told.

New twist at the end of Emmerdale tonight
Although Anthony got away, he only hobbled as far as the depot, where his plan was to contact Steph. But his phone died.
Inside, as he tried to use the office phone, he was confronted by a menacing Aaron Dingle. Aaron had put two and two together and worked everything out. He knows what Anthony is and he is out to punish him.
So what happens next? Will Aaron finish Anthony off?
