Is Caleb leaving Emmerdale? All the clues William Ash will exit the soap

After last night’s cliffhanger (January 21) fans are left wondering if Caleb is leaving Emmerdale. And unfortunately there are a few signs that hint at his exit.

When Caleb first arrived onto our screens as an unknown Dingle, it didn’t take long for him to fit straight in. And now, with the current Anthony storyline, William Ash is adored by fans.

So, it’s only natural for them to worry that he’s leaving the show. After last night’s gunshot and the flash-forward at the start of the year – it’s not looking good. But is Caleb actually leaving the village? Here are the signs he may be.

    Is Caleb leaving Emmerdale?

Well first of all, the flash-forward scene at the beginning of 2025 didn’t look too great for Caleb.

We saw him flat-lining in hospital and he looked in pretty bad shape. But how he gets to that point, we still don’t know.

Another flash-forward showed Cain emotional while standing over a new grave. But we have no clue who was in it – was it Caleb?

And then last night, his showdown with Anthony didn’t go the way he (or us) expected it to go.

Caleb has finally discovered the truth about why Ruby hates her dad (finally!) And as expected, he wasn’t going to let Anthony get away with it easily.

After his disgusting father-in-law admitted what he done to Ruby when she was younger, a scuffle went down between them. Then a gunshot rang out. But in true Emmerdale fashion, we have to wait until tonight to see the outcome.

But was it Caleb that got shot? Fans are worried that it was. And if so, that could also explain two of the flash-forwards.

Fans fear for William Ash’s future on the show

Fans took to X to express their concern that Caleb will be leaving the show.

One wrote: “Wait! We know Anthony ends up dead. But what if the gunshot at the end of tonight’s episode was Caleb getting shot – and then Cain comes in and kills Anthony?! Because we all know the flash-forward of Caleb has to happen…”

Another fan agreed, adding: “I never even thought of this! And I totally forgot we had the flash-forwards to come. I think you are on to something here.”

While a third commented: “That would also explain Cain standing over the freshly dug grave crying.”

So while things are looking pretty bleak for Caleb right now, there has been no official announcement that William Ash has stepped away from his role.

  • What happened in Emmerdale tonight: Caleb held unrepentant Anthony at gunpoint – and someone got shot

What happened in Emmerdale tonight: Caleb held unrepentant Anthony at gunpoint – and someone got shot

Emmerdale tonight saw Caleb play a very dangerous game of Russian Roulette with Anthony. The gun was fired, but who got shot?

Meanwhile, Dawn couldn’t keep away from Joe and the pair ended up kissing again.

Here’s everything that happened in Emmerdale tonight, Tuesday January 21.

Caleb held Anthony at gunpoint in Emmerdale tonight

Anthony tried to talk his way out of everything by blaming Ruby (Credit: ITV)

Caleb got to the truth – all of it

Caleb drove Anthony to a barn on Moira’s farm and ordered him out of the car at gun point. Anthony brazened it out as Caleb held the gun on him and told him to tell the truth.

He tried to make out Ruby was lying, but Caleb wasn’t budging, he wanted the truth.

Although Anthony did convince him to put the gun down, Caleb still wouldn’t listen as Anthony protested it was all in Ruby’s head. Caleb then played Russian Roulette – one bullet in the gun, six chambers. The first shot was empty.

Anthony hit back that Caleb just didn’t understand family life as he was brought up in a care home. Shots two, three and four were fired and empty too.

As it came down to 50-50, Anthony started to admit what he did. And he continued to try to talk his way into saving his life. But then he started talking about how Ruby used to flaunt herself and it was all her fault causing Caleb to shoot. That one was empty too, meaning it had to be the next one.

Except it wasn’t, because Caleb had taken all the bullets out, just wanting Anthony to feel the terror Ruby had.

Anthony then played his trump card and told Caleb Ruby had been sleeping with Cain…

    Steph went for Ruby

Meanwhile Steph was getting worried as to why her grandad hadn’t turned up to meet her. She once again attacked Ruby over it – whinged that her mum wished she’d never been born and stormed off again.

When will Steph actually act her age and question exactly why her mum looks so traumatised? Can’t she stop behaving like a spoilt brat for five minutes?

    A shot was fired

Elsewhere Cain went to visit Ruby and revealed he knew the truth about Anthony. He stepped up to support Ruby and insisted he would stop Caleb doing anything stupid.

As he searched the village for them, Aaron approached, wanting to know exactly what was going on.

Back at the barn, Cain had tracked them down and was outside when he heard a gunshot. Inside, Anthony had made a lunge for the gun, but were either of them hurt?

Dawn gave in to Joe in Emmerdale tonight

Joe presented Dawn with a laptop, but Dawn told him she wasn’t going to work with him and he could stick his job. He seemed unfazed and told her to give him a week. He gave Dawn some work to do and she smashed it, leaving Kim impressed. But then Kim confirmed Joe had been behind her hiring and Dawn was cross.

Dawn burst into his room as he was changing to confront him. But he used the opportunity to seduce her and she did not fight him off. Well, you wouldn’t, would you?!

    Also in Emmerdale tonight…

    Laurel panicked

Laurel was still in panic mode, despite Nicola’s reassurance that she did nothing wrong and all she did was try to save her. Honestly, if we’re about to have weeks of Laurel wittering on about her guilt, we’re not here for it.

Later, Laurel tried to tell the police, but Nicola convinced her not to. She laid into Nicola and continued to witter on and on.

    The lights went out…

At the depot the lights are out which cleared the whole place (conveniently for later in the week we suspect).

  • Nicholas Day – Emmerdale’s best ever villainous actor at the centre of the Anthony Fox murder mystery

Nicholas Day – Emmerdale’s best ever villainous actor at the centre of the Anthony Fox murder mystery

Emmerdale has had some villains in its time and Anthony Fox, played by actor Nicholas Day is right up there with the best/worst of them. In fact, he may have created the most vile, disgusting and difficult-to-watch character ever, which is no mean feat given the other baddies the show has produced.

We really thought Tom King was the lowest of the low, but in fact we were wrong. Anthony beats him 10 times over – and that’s all credit to Nicholas Day for such a chilling performance.

    Anthony and Steph in Emmerdale
From the moment he arrived we were unsure about Anthony (Credit: ITV)

Nicholas Day as Anthony Fox in Emmerdale

Although actor Nicholas Day has had a long and varied career both on stage and screen, he was relatively unknown to the Emmerdale audience when he arrived in the Dales. A part in the Crown and roles in Murder Maps, The Wolfman and The Lakes were perhaps his best-known roles.

But now he will forever be etched in our brains as horrid Anthony Fox.

Anthony came to Emmerdale to reunite with estranged daughter Ruby Fox-Miligan last year. He arrived alongside granddaughter, Steph Miligan

Ruby and Caleb were desperate to reunite with Steph, but she made it very clear Anthony came as part of the package. Given she hadn’t spoken to her dad for 30 years, Ruby found this difficult to swallow.

The official story is that Anthony and Ruby’s mum, Helen, threw Ruby out when she fell pregnant at 16. They gave her a choice between keeping her baby or staying at home and she chose Caleb and the baby.

Since his return, Anthony has spent months pretending to Ruby he’s sorry and gaslighting her into thinking she was the problem.

As everyone around her urged her to give her dad another chance, especially as he has terminal prostate cancer, Ruby stood firm. It came to the point where even husband Caleb urged her to let it go.

But while no one in the village could see the hell Ruby was going through, viewers certainly could – and they were proved right when flashbacks revealed Anthony had sexually abused Ruby and it started when she was just 14.

A rape on her 16th birthday had – horrifyingly – resulted in the birth of Steph. Anthony is Steph’s real father.

He's charming, kind and generous - but not behind the scenes (Credit: ITV)

So what makes Nicholas Day such a good villain?

The entire time Anthony has been in the village, he has charmed the pants off everyone around him. Even Caleb, who knows him of old, was won over by his father-in-law.

Anthony has painted this perfect persona of kind and generous. He donated £5000 to the April search fund and has even been helping half the village kids with their homework.

But behind closed doors, he has been blackmailing Ruby over her fling with Cain. He has made vile comments and veiled threats towards her. His mere presence has been making her feel physically sick, let alone when he tries to touch her.

Villains don’t have to be murderous or out there, the ones that have us believe they are something else are far more terrifying. Take Meena Jutla for example: she was always a bit out there, crazy and unpredictable. Whereas Anthony comes across as just a kindly old man – something he is not.

Fans love to hate Nicholas Day as Anthony in Emmerdale

The mark of a good villain is what the viewers think. Soap fans are a hard bunch to please and the overwhelming consensus is Nicholas Day is a brilliant actor.

“The actor playing Anthony is such a credit to his art, aren’t we all totally repulsed by him? Superb,” said one on social media.

Another added: “Gutted Nicholas Day will be leaving despite what the storyline is about; Anthony the abusive father of Ruby will be happy when he’s gone, but well done Nicholas an incredible part.”

“He has played Anthony brilliantly, hats off to him great acting to play a part like that, can’t be easy,” said a third. A fourth then agreed: “I feel so sorry for Nicholas Day – he’s playing the part so well that he’s probably getting women walloping him with bags of potato waffles in Iceland.”

A further commenter has said: “In storylines like this the person playing the hated character gets overlooked. Nicholas Day is a fantastic actor. The character he portrays makes my skin crawl, which is a sure indication an actor is doing a good job!”

“The actor playing her dad is brilliant too. He makes my skin crawl,” added one more.

  • Who are Joe Tate’s mum and dad in Emmerdale? His connection to Noah Dingle explained

Who are Joe Tate’s mum and dad in Emmerdale? His connection to Noah Dingle explained

Joe gave his younger brother Noah a watch in the soap this week, saying it belonged to their dad, Chris, and he wanted Noah to have it. There’s a long history with Joe Tate, his mum and dad in Emmerdale, years before Noah came along.

While the jury’s still out on whether Joe Tate can be trusted or not, there’s no denying that he’s pulling out all the stops to make it up to his brother.

But how are the young men related? Who was their dad? Did Emmerdale’s Joe Tate share a mum and dad with Noah? And where is he now?

Emmerdale’s Joe Tate was born to mum Rachel and dad Chris

Joe was born in 1995, to mum Rachel Hughes and dad Chris Tate. When Rachel was heavily pregnant, her stepdad Joe Sugden was killed in a car accident and the shock sent her into labour. She named the baby Joseph in his memory.

Annie Sugden – Joe’s mum – inherited his share of the farm and gifted it to baby Joseph for him to receive on his 18th birthday. Whether that means he now owns some of the village, we’re not sure!

Chris, Rachel and baby Joe Tate

Where is Joe’s mum, Rachel, now?

After divorcing Chris, single mum Rachel met widowed teacher Graham Clark. She fell hard for him and he seemed perfect for her.

But slowly he began controlling Rachel in small, then bigger, ways. He made her change her clothes and her hair, and even rearranged the furniture in her cottage.

When Rachel found a photo of Graham’s late wife Rebecca, she was shocked to see he was trying to make her look more like Rebecca.

Graham’s abusive behaviour stepped up, and he even got poor Rachel arrested, and suspended from work.

He wanted them to move away though Rachel wasn’t keen and she started to plan to leave him.

She confronted him on a picnic, only for them to argue as she twigged that Rebecca hadn’t taken her own life but had instead been murdered – by Graham!

But it was too late. Graham pushed Rachel over the cliff to her death.

    Joe’s dad Chris Tate

Chris Tate was Frank’s scheming, manipulative son. He hated his stepmum, Kim, and spent a lot of time and energy trying to outwit her. But he never quite succeeded.

After Frank’s death, Kim kept a share of the Tate businesses, much to Chris’s annoyance. He tried to take revenge on her but she clobbered him with a paperweight and escaped the village with her then baby son, James.

Chris and Charity look worried about sending Joe Tate off to boarding school in Emmerdale after he has cut up his school uniform with scissors.

    Chris and his wives

Chris was married to Kathy Merrick, whose second husband Dave Glover had a steamy affair with Kim. He then married Rachel, and after their divorce he married Charity Dingle, who was 12 years his junior.

Chris and Charity’s marriage was fiery! When Debbie Jones was revealed to be Cain and Charity’s daughter, it led Chris to be paranoid that Charity was cheating on him.

Which did actually turn out to be true!

Did Charity murder Chris Tate in Emmerdale?

When Chris was diagnosed with a terminal brain tumour, he started to plot. He started spending his money as quickly as he could, so Charity couldn’t get her hands on it.

He invited Charity for a drink to toast the ‘death of their marriage’ and then poisoned himself, setting her up for murder! His last word was “whore”.

Joe Tate and Noah Dingle chat at Charity's house in Emmerdale

    Charity’s pregnancy

At the time of Chris’s death, Charity was pregnant, though Chris didn’t know. Charity wasn’t sure if her baby daddy was Chris, Cain, or her cousin Marlon, who she’d slept with once (urgh – talk about keeping it in the family).

She had baby Noah in prison after she was sentenced to life for killing Chris, and found out Noah was in fact a Tate after all, and not a double Dingle.

Always one for a deal, Charity agreed that she would hand over the tot to Chris’s sister, Zoe, in exchange for £10,000 and the proof that Chris killed himself that would set her free. Zoe agreed. She renamed Noah Christopher and planned to adopt him.

But Zoe already had her own daughter Jean, and the care of her orphaned nephew, Joseph. Plus she suffered from mental health issues and she was responsible for running Home Farm, too. Her application was turned down.

Charity was given the choice of having Noah adopted by a stranger or raising him herself and she chose to raise him herself.

Meanwhile Joseph and his cousin Jean, went to live in New Zealand when Zoe decided to start a new life.

Emmerdale’s Joe Tate shares dad with Noah Dingle but not his mum

Chris was dead by the time Noah was born in 2004, and in 2005, Charity took Noah to live in Spain for a while.

By the time they returned to the village in 2009, Joe was long gone.

So the brothers hadn’t really met before Joe came back to Emmerdale as an adult in 2017.

Pauline Quirke: Her years in Emmerdale as tragic Hazel as actress reveals sad diagnosis

Pauline Quirke is a familiar face to Emmerdale fans having played devoted mum Hazel Rhodes for two years.

Pauline may have shot to fame as Sharon in BBC comedy Birds of a Feather but she won a whole host of new fans when she joined Emmerdale in 2010 as Hazel.

Here’s everything Hazel got up to in her time in the village.

Hazel, with Paddy and Chas behind, at Jackson's funeral
Hazel’s time in the village wasn’t happy (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)

    Hazel’s arrival

Hazel turned up in Emmerdale in the summer of 2010 without warning to surprise son Jackson Walsh – Aaron’s boyfriend. She and Aaron immediately butted heads but they did grow to get along.

In October that year, Jackson was in an accident and paralysed from the neck down. Hazel stuck around to help care for her son. She was an art teacher and started running classes for the villagers.

She became friends with Bob and was a shoulder to cry on for him when there was a fire in Emmerdale and Bob’s wife Viv, and his mate Terry, were both killed.

    Making the best of things

With Viv’s death weighing heavily on her, Hazel worried about what would happen if she wasn’t around to look after Jackson. She hired a carer to help but Jackson wasn’t keen.

She and Aaron also introduced Jackson to quadriplegic Steve Kelly, whose wife was pregnant. They hoped that Jackson would see his life wasn’t over. But Jackson wasn’t convinced.

Pauline Quirke’s character helped Jackson with his bucket list

By the spring of the following year, Aaron and Hazel were devastated when they discovered Jackson’s video diary which revealed he wanted to die.

Heartbroken, Hazel and Aaron decided to help Jackson tick off his bucket list including skydiving and a memorable trip to Whitby.

But even that wasn’t enough to change Jackson’s mind. So reluctantly, Hazel agreed to help. She sacked the carer and she and Aaron mixed a lethal cocktail of drugs for when Jackson decided the time was right.

When Jackson chose the time, Hazel was too upset to put the drugs in Jackson’s mouth, so Aaron was the one to do it. She stayed in Emmerdale for a little while afterwards but decided the memories were too hard and she had to move on.

Hazel did ask Aaron to leave with her, but he decided to stay.

Pauline Quirke left Emmerdale in 2012.

  • Emmerdale spoilers: Anthony to shoot himself in huge whodunnit twist? Fan theory explored

Emmerdale spoilers: Anthony to shoot himself in huge whodunnit twist? Fan theory explored

This week sparks the end of Anthony Fox in Emmerdale as he is killed off as part of a big whodunnit story. But a new fan theory has predicted that Anthony will end his own life.

Anthony arrived in the village a few months ago and viewers quickly discovered that he had abused his daughter Ruby when she was young.

While there are many people in the village, including Ruby Fox-Miligan herself, who’d like to see Anthony dead, viewers are predicting a huge twist.

    Anthony Fox in Emmerdale

Shortly after Anthony arrived in the Dales, a special flashback episode revealed that Anthony had sexually abused Ruby when she was a child.

In the flashback scene, a young Ruby was seen celebrating her 16th birthday. Her father then approached her in her bedroom, while Ruby begged “not again, not today.”

Ruby had kept the secret for over 30 years, but last week she bravely confronted her father over what he had put her through. She also ordered a DNA test, which horrifically revealed that Anthony is Steph Miligan’s real father.

Chas and Caleb soon figured out the truth and news started to spread around the village about Anthony’s history. After Caleb ordered Anthony to get into his car, a flash forward scene showed a bloodied Anthony dead on the floor.

Caleb threatens Anthony with a gun, and Ruby, Chas, Cain, Aaron, Laurel and Nicola also all have motive, but will any of them kill Anthony?

    New whodunnit fan theory

Emmerdale fans have suggested that the culprit could be Anthony himself.

Taking to X, a fan wrote: “Money on Anthony being that out of it after all the batterings, he gets the gun, fumbles and shoots himself. All major characters survive a jail sentence.”

Another fan had a similar idea, writing: “I think Anthony tries to grab the gun and it goes off.”

A third fan wrote: “Caleb hands the gun to Anthony and tells him to do the right thing.”

Caleb ‘definitely innocent’ as theories insist Steph is the real killer

The who killed Anthony Fox storyline is currently the focus in Emmerdale, but although Caleb is seen with a gun in his hands, fans are convinced Steph is the real killer.

Recent scenes have seen the villagers discover the truth about Anthony – that he abused daughter Ruby Fox-Miligan when she was a kid.

There are no shortage of suspects for his murder, but it’s Steph Miligan who fans are looking at.

Anthony Fox is killed in Emmerdale

In Monday’s episode, news quickly worked its way round the village that Anthony abused a child.

Upon being told the news, Nicola rushed home where she’d left Anthony alone with Angelica. After hearing Nicola’s accusations, Anthony got physically aggressive. She was saved by Laurel, who knocked Anthony out with a candlestick.

Meanwhile, the revelation had hit Chas hard and brought back memories of her ex Gordon, who had abused their son Aaron.

Aaron, himself, was unsettled when he witnessed an uncomfortable conversation between Ruby and her dad.

The most furious of all was Caleb, who had not only discovered that his wife was abused by her own father, but that Steph is not his biological daughter.

    Emmerdale fans suspect Steph

With Caleb being seen holding the gun, fans have come to the conclusion that it would now be ‘too obvious’ for him to be the killer and have instead turned their focus to Steph.

“It’s never the obvious one,” wrote one fan on Facebook. While another added: “Caleb is too obvious. I reckon will be the daughter [Steph].”

Other fans were in agreement and predicted that Steph would overhear a conversation revealing Anthony to be her father. A third fan wrote: “The granddaughter will hear them and she will kill him,” with a fourth fan adding: “I think Steph over hears what’s happening and pulls the trigger.”

A fifth fan wrote: “Definitely Steph. Caleb is innocent,” while a sixth said: “Maybe the daughter shoots him, plot twist.”
