  • Emmerdale confirms Steph’s father and it’s one twist too far – OPINION

Emmerdale confirms Steph’s father and it’s one twist too far – OPINION

Emmerdale fans discovered the truth about who Steph’s father is in tonight’s episode, as Caleb read Ruby’s DNA results.

Viewers know that Ruby was worried that Steph wasn’t Caleb’s daughter, and could in fact have been fathered by her own dad, Anthony. Because we also know that Anthony raped Steph when she was a teenager.

But surely, we all thought, surely Anthony being Steph’s dad would be a step too far?

    Unfortunately, though, we were wrong.

The news is out about Steph’s father

In tonight’s episode, Caleb read the words “Zero per cent chance of paternity” and our hearts sank.

Because frankly this hard-hitting, brutal storyline is grim enough, without adding this extra twist.

We were hoping that the very fact of Ruby getting a DNA test would be enough for the truth to come out. We had our fingers crossed that Steph would turn out to be Caleb’s daughter. And we thought he’d twig something was going on and Ruby would reveal the awful secret she’d been keeping.

But clearly that’s not happening. Now we know Steph’s dad is also her grandad and it’s so huge we’re struggling to get our heads round it.

    Grim storyline

Of course Emmerdale has explored sexual abuse before. Aaron Dingle was abused by his father, Gordon Livesey, when he was a child. Aaron recently opened up to his new boyfriend John Sugden about the lifelong scars Gordon’s abuse has left.

    It’s a dark subject, there’s no doubt.

    Dark enough, in fact.

Incest and abuse are bleak topics for a soap to cover. We have no doubt Emmerdale will handle this well. Beth Cordingly, who plays Ruby, has already proved many times over that she has the acting chops to absolutely nail this story. The Emmerdale writers are experienced in covering tough ideas.

But could this be a case of just because you can, doesn’t mean you should?

Could Steph be pregnant with Ross' baby?
It’s only a matter of time before Steph finds out the truth (Credit: ITV)

    A twist too far?

Adding Steph into the mix of this story gives it a further twist. One that we think is a twist too far.

Ruby’s spent her life trying to protect her daughter, but of course these secrets never stay secret in soap, so it’s only a matter of time before Steph finds out the shocking truth about her biological dad.

And that has huge ramifications for her future. Plus there’s the mental trauma involved in Steph having to rewrite her whole family history and her relationship with her mother.

Ruby’s story and its inter-generational impact, has enough to it to be a six-part Sunday-night drama. We’re worried that with the speed and scope of Emmerdale – as with all soaps – this enormous, bleak, heartbeaking story won’t have the time and space to be properly explored.

We’re really invested in Ruby’s story, we want to see Anthony face justice (we’re not on board with the news that he will be murdered – but our feelings on that twist are for another time!) and we want the Fox-Miligan family to heal.

But we can’t help feeling Steph being Anthony’s daughter is a twist this already shocking storyline didn’t need.

  • Emmerdale’s Mary becoming ‘annoying’ for fans as they call for Suzy romance to be revisited

Emmerdale’s Mary becoming ‘annoying’ for fans as they call for Suzy romance to be revisited

In Emmerdale Mary has started to ‘annoy’ fans, as they call for a change in her current storyline.

At the moment, Mary is heavily involved in April’s disappearance storyline. But her recent actions have not gone down well with viewers.

Recently, despite Rhona’s protests, Mary lashed out at Laurel when it came out that she made a drunken pass at Marlon.

    Emmerdale Mary ‘annoying’ fans

This immediately caused backlash with fans, as they believed Rhona was the one who should have sorted the situation with Laurel. Not her mum.

Things only got worse whenever she not so discreetly insinuated she thinks there is a high chance April could be dead. And while, many people in the village may have shared the same thoughts, they all chose not to vocalise it.

Now Emmerdale fans have taken to a Reddit thread to discuss whether or not they are happy with Mary’s character. And one thing they all agree on, is that they wish her romance with Suzy was revisited.

A while back, Emmerdale shocked fans by giving Mary and Suzy feelings for each other. But before there was ever a chance to fully develop it, Vanessa was back in Suzy’s life and Mary stepped aside.

Despite this, the pair have maintained a close bond. And it’s obvious they care for one another. Although fans wish it was still romantic.

One wrote: “I love the actress Louise Jameson. But Mary is getting on my nerves. Her overuse of the nickname ‘poppet’ to Rhona is driving me mad.”

Fans call for Mary and Suzy to be revisited

Another agreed: “I wish they would have her go back to the romance she had with Suzy. That story had some premise and they just cut it off.”

This was backed up by another fan who admitted: “I got so excited when I saw them sit together in the pub a few nights ago.”

“She is being underused. I really loved the idea of her and Suzy. But that’s been abandoned. My worry is that she will be kept by the wayside,” a fan theorised.

As it seems fans are desperate for Mary and Suzy to be revisited, could Emmerdale bring the pair back together again? Anything is possible in soaps!

  • Steph to kill Anthony, Emmerdale fan theory suggests

Steph to kill Anthony, Emmerdale fan theory suggests

A new fan theory predicts Steph will be the one to kill Anthony, as Emmerdale spoilers for next week preview his murder.

Ruby’s life was flipped upside down when her dad rocked up to the village. After a while of speculation, it was confirmed Anthony had sexually abused Ruby when she was younger.

Over the weeks, Anthony has proven that he is still an evil man, as he turned his attention to blackmailing Ruby.

However, Emmerdale spoilers for next week say that Anthony is murdered. And a new fan theory predicts it’s by someone completely unexpected.

    Could Steph kill Anthony?

Steph has been her grandad’s biggest supporter since arriving in the village. But she has no idea just how dark his history with her mum goes.

Ruby and her daughter have had a turbulent history, as Steph was sent off to boarding school and always felt her mum preferred her brother, Nicky. Now, that makes sense to us. But Steph still has no idea the real reason.

Fans have been increasingly more and more annoyed, as those closest to Ruby fail to see that something is deeply troubling her.

Ruby ordered a DNA test to work out once and for all who Steph’s true father is. And it seems Caleb is the one to discover the answer tonight.

But one fan is convinced that Steph will be the one to murder Anthony next week.

Taking to social media, one fan wrote: “Calling it now. I reckon it will be Steph who kills Anthony.”

Next week Anthony is murdered – but is it Steph who pulls the trigger? (Credit: ITV)

    Anthony dies in Emmerdale spoilers

For this to make sense, Steph would have to find out the vile truth about what happened to her mum when she was younger.

But as Emmerdale spoilers suggest the news about Anthony is getting out, could Steph secretly know about it? Or has she found the DNA results herself?

Either way, fans don’t have long left of the Emmerdale villain as next week a gunshot rings out, and Anthony is found dead. And while there are many villagers on the suspect list, could Steph be the unlikely one to pull the trigger?

‘Just bring April back’ scream Emmerdale fans as storyline is being ‘dragged out’

Fans are calling for April in Emmerdale to come back, as they criticise the storyline for being ‘dragged out.’

On Christmas Day, Marlon discovered that April was not in her room. And she hasn’t been seen since.

Viewers saw her getting into a car at the end of the Christmas episode, but we remain in the dark about who the driver was.

    April in Emmerdale remains missing

In the weeks that have followed, Marlon and the rest of his family, have gone on a heartbreaking search. But to no success.

After worrying that April may actually be dead, hope was given when it was confirmed that she was spotted on CCTV in Leeds.

With fresh hope, last night’s episode saw Marlon head out in a search around that area. Only he wasn’t the only one who was looking.

Ross has continued his own search for the teen, despite Marlon’s protests that it was his fault. But yesterday, saw the pair forced together on a mission to find the youngster they both care so deeply about.

Despite their team-up, April is still nowhere to be seen. And as three weeks have passed, fans are getting fed up of the storyline.

Some viewers took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to share their annoyance at the slow progression.

Fans are fed up with the story progression

One wrote: “I really don’t get this missing April story. It’s so boring and drawn out. There doesn’t seem to be any substance or real point.”

Another penned: “Can they just bring April back already so we don’t have to deal with this as much.”

Others took to the comment section on Emmerdale’s Instagram to give their opinions.

A viewer wrote: “We know she’s alive. It’s dragging on a bit. Just bring April back.”

Another added: “Dragging on a bit which as a result makes it boring to watch.”

However, one fan hit back, explaining the timescale is to represent real life.

They wrote: “It’s hardly dragging on. It’s only been a few weeks. They have to make it believable. These things do happen in real life so it’s a really good storyline in my opinion.”

The question is; where is April? And why hasn’t she returned home?

  • Finally! Emmerdale fans rejoice as the mystery of ‘Fake nurse Wendy’ is resolved

Finally! Emmerdale fans rejoice as the mystery of ‘Fake nurse Wendy’ is resolved

It’s been a long time coming, but fans finally got their answers about Wendy in Emmerdale.

Wendy’s Emmerdale past has been a huge question mark for fans for a while. Ages ago, it was revealed that she initially lied about her medical qualifications in order to get herself a job. But viewers were led to believe she was going to fix that.

But after, last night’s episode, we’re not so certain she ever did.

The truth about Wendy was revealed. (Credit: ITV)

Wendy in Emmerdale has a fake background

In the midst of April’s disappearance, Rhona has been worrying about who would have leaked her past to the press. And after Vanessa suggested it had to be someone they knew, Rhona was even more apprehensive.

Later we saw a very guilty looking Wendy trying to avoid spending time with Vanessa. Then, she was cornered by a journalist who demanded more dirt on other villagers for her stories – confirming Wendy was the one who leaked Rhona’s history.

But why is Wendy doing this? It seems the journalist knows more about Wendy than we do. She mentioned that as Wendy failed to disclose her criminal background, her qualification isn’t actually legal. So it seems she suits the fan-given nickname ‘Fake nurse Wendy.’

We still don’t know what exactly her criminal past is, but at least we know she isn’t actually qualified to be doing her job. And fans are happy to have that confirmed after all this time.

Fans rejoice as the truth comes out

Taking to X (formerly Twitter) fans rejoiced at the confirmation, while also noting her double standards.

One wrote: “Fake nurse Wendy is finally caught out!”

Another queried: “Why and how is Wendy still a nurse, anyway?”

A third penned: “Wendy is an unqualified nurse and risking people’s lives. Time for her to get off her moral high horse.”

“Fake nurse Wendy is going to start crying because she feels guilty? Get the buckets ready,” a viewer commented.

However, another fan predicted this might be the thing that tips her and Bob’s relationship over the edge.

They wrote: “Wendy looks extremely guilty. Telling the press might be Bob’s final straw.”

The question remains, what exactly is Wendy’s criminal past? And will Rhona find out it was her?

  • As Caleb still fails to notice something is wrong with Ruby, fans have had enough of his behaviour

As Caleb still fails to notice something is wrong with Ruby, fans have had enough of his behaviour

Viewers have had enough of Caleb in Emmerdale, as he continuously fails to notice that something is wrong with Ruby.

Ruby has been struggling ever since her dad, Anthony arrived in the village. It was then revealed to viewers that Anthony had repeatedly sexually abused Ruby while she was growing up.

To make matters even worse for her, now that both Anthony, and her daughter Steph are back in her life, she has the question of who Steph’s real dad is.

Fans are fed up with Caleb in Emmerdale

Ruby’s behaviour has been getting more out of control as the weeks go on. She has been agitated, arguing and even drinking more. Yet her husband fails to notice.

Caleb’s sister, Chas, has spotted the alarming signs, and after a heart-to-heart, Ruby confided in her. While she didn’t tell Chas who she was assaulted by, Chas encouraged her to do a DNA test and tell Caleb.

But fans have had enough of Caleb’s praise for Anthony in the last few episodes. Even Cain knows the man isn’t to be trusted. But suddenly Caleb is one of his biggest fans.

From supporting Anthony through his cancer journey (which viewers think he’s lying about) to trying to get Ruby to forgive her dad, viewers have had enough.

They took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to share their views.

One wrote: “Oh if only you knew. Caleb your family isn’t as perfect as you think.”

Another penned: “Nice of Caleb to stand by Ruby – not. Why is he Anthony’s cheerleader…?”

A third commented: “Caleb, you are making me not like you.”

    A big shock is coming…

“How has Caleb not realised something is seriously wrong with Ruby?” another questioned.

Last night’s episode saw Caleb gush about his own family life to Cain while at the hospital – but he has no idea what is really going on.

However, it seems he is in for a huge shock, as in spoilers for tonight’s episode Caleb is the one who opens the DNA results. Will he be Steph’s dad? And will this finally get him to realise something bigger is going on?

5 Emmerdale spoilers for tonight: Steph’s true dad is revealed after Caleb finds the DNA results

In Emmerdale spoilers for tonight, the identity of Steph’s father is dramatically revealed – but who will it be?

Elsewhere, Cain’s guilt continues to eat at him and Laurel gives Anthony an offer.

All of this and more in Emmerdale spoilers for tonight.

What will the DNA test results say? (Credit: ITV)

    1. Ruby panics over the DNA results

Last night’s episode (January 14) saw Ruby receive Steph’s DNA results. But before she had a chance to look at them, Caleb came home.

Tonight, Ruby has spent the whole night worrying about it and finally rips open the envelope.

But once again, she is interrupted as Steph arrives downstairs.

    2. Chas encourages Ruby

Chas has been a helping hand to Ruby recently, and was even the one to encourage her to get the test done. However, while she knows Ruby was sexually abused, she still remains unaware that it was by Anthony.

In tonight’s episode, Ruby worries about Caleb’s reaction if he isn’t Steph’s dad. But Chas reminds her that he has nothing to forgive.

She tries to tell Ruby that Caleb will remain by her side, no matter what the results say. However, the conversation leaves Ruby adamant that she’s not going to look at them.

    3. Caleb opens the results

Caleb still can’t tell something is seriously wrong with his wife – how is he missing it?? And tonight, when he has a headache, he goes looking in Ruby’s bag for some painkillers.

But of course, he finds the DNA test results. Obviously confused, Caleb looks at the envelope.

Ruby then returns home, with her decision to destroy the results. But that plan is thwarted when she walks in to Caleb holding the results. Will he be Steph’s dad? And will Ruby confide in her husband?

A trusting Laurel sets up more tutoring sessions for Anthony and Arthur. (Credit: ITV)

    4. Anthony’s tutoring continues

The most vile man in the Emmerdale village has been doing a very good job at making friends. And spending a lot of time tutoring the younger characters, including Arthur.

After he was so good at helping him with his homework, an unknowing Laurel arranges for Anthony to give Arthur more tutoring sessions.

    Elsewhere…

The last few episodes have been very important for Moira as she started her radiotherapy treatment. But she has been glad to have her loving husband Cain at her side the whole time…

But she still doesn’t know he has been hiding the fact he slept with Ruby while she was in surgery. And so in Emmerdale spoilers for tonight, the Dingle bad boy wonders just how long he can keep his guilty conscious quiet.

  • Eli Dingle in Emmerdale: Relationship with brother Marlon, his troublemaking schemes, and criminal past

Eli Dingle in Emmerdale: Relationship with brother Marlon, his troublemaking schemes, and criminal past

Eli Dingle has just arrived in the village in Classic Emmerdale, much to his brother Marlon’s horror.

It’s already clear that Marlon isn’t fond of his brother, while Zak has given Eli an ultimatum – he needs to keep out of trouble, or he’ll be sent packing!

It seems Sam’s the only member of the family who’s pleased to see his cousin.

But as Eli ended up sticking around in Emmerdale for four years, he definitely won over his family in the end.

Here’s the lowdown on everything the troublemaking Dingle – the one-time bareknuckle fighting champion of Skipdale  – got up to during his years in Emmerdale.

    Eli Dingle with Sam
Eli Dingle arrived in the village in 2006 (Credit: ITV)

    Eli’s arrival

Eli sauntered into the village on the day of the King’s River show home opening. He immediately pointed out the flaws in the house, claiming there were cracks in the plaster and said he knew what he was talking to thanks to training as a builder when he was in prison.

But Marlon thought Eli was jealous and he ignored his advice.

When the house exploded, Eli helped pull people from the wreckage.

    Eli and Alice

When Alice Dingle wanted to end her life, due to her terminal cancer, Marlon begged Eli to help.

He emotionally blackmailed his brother into getting hold of morphine for Alice. But after Alice died, Zak was horrified to find out Eli had given her the drugs. He disowned poor Eli, who had to leave Wishing Well Cottage.

When Sam came across his cousin, he was living rough in the woods on the run from some vicious drug dealers. The dealers attacked Marlon in an attempt to track Eli down. Eventually Eli came up with a plan to frame them for an armed robbery at the post office. The plan worked and Eli was welcomed back into the Dingle family.

    Trouble making!

Eli was wrongly arrested for Tom King’s murder, and he had a flirtation with Kelly Windsor. When Jimmy jilted Kelly at the altar, Eli nicked Debbie’s car for her to use to escape the village.

He and Debbie started an on/off relationship and he helped her with some of her money-making schemes, including pretending to be Scott Windsor to help her get a loan for the garage.

    Eli and Olena

    Shooting Marlon!

Marlon was disappointed when a local bookmaker wouldn’t pay out and decided to rob it in revenge. He convinced Eli to join him. But when Marlon discovered Eli had brought a gun, he wanted to pull out. He tried to stop Eli and got accidentally shot in the chest!

Luckily, Marlon recovered but he was furious with Eli. And the brothers’ relationship completely fell apart when Marlon was hailed a hero and given enough money to buy a house for him and Donna.

Eli was jealous and started blackmailing his brother, threatening to tell everyone the robbery was his idea.

The pair ended up in a scuffle on top of a multi-storey carpark!

    Eli leaves Emmerdale

    Eli and the McFarlanes

Eli had links to a local crime family, the McFarlanes, through his ex-girlfriend Danielle. She helped the Dingles rescue Aaron from the family after he began working as a drugs courier for them.

And Eli was also involved when Jasmine Thomas killed bent cop Shane Doyle – another person working for the McFarlanes – when he tried to rape her.

Eli helped cover up the crime, but things got complicated when Ross Kirk – who was having an affair with Donna – was blamed for the murder (by Marlon!).

Lots of complications later, and Eli spilled the beans to the police, telling them what really happened, leaving Debbie arrested while Jasmine escaped. Jasmine eventually returned and confessed, leading to Debbie being released.

Eli, though, was struggling and ended up back on the streets. Laurel found him and brought him back to the village. Eli thought he brought trouble to his family, but he was welcomed home. He tried to keep things on the straight and narrow, making friends and getting a job at the sweet factory.

    Eli and Olena in Emmerdale

But when Eli fell for Olena Petrovich, things got tricky again. Sam Dingle also had feelings for her though it was Eli she loved. When Sam reported Olena to immigration, Eli somehow got the blame.

He went on a downward spiral and ended up stealing the cash box from the B&B and knocking Eric Pollard unconscious.

Eli decided to leave but he and Marlon had an emotional discussion before he went, chatting about their childhood.

Eli’s not been back in the village since 2010. But he was a popular character and many fans have said they’d love to see him back!

What happened in Emmerdale tonight: The DNA results arrived, Caleb needs to open his eyes and Joe is after something

Emmerdale tonight saw the DNA results arrived, but Ruby didn’t get the chance to read them before Caleb came home. And speaking of Caleb, his behaviour was seriously below par tonight and he needs to pull his socks up.

Elsewhere, Joe let Noah down, but it’s clear he’s plotting something – and we have our suspicions over what.

Here’s everything that went down in Emmerdale tonight, Tuesday January 14.

Ruby’s results arrived in Emmerdale tonight

Ruby was worried about her relationship with Steph, and Caleb encouraged her to make an effort with Anthony to impress Steph – and make everyone’s lives easier. Caleb told her to get over it. Here’s a tip, Caleb, notice how distressed your wife is over her dad and find out if there’s more to it.

Caleb went to the hospital and confided in Cain how irritated her was by Ruby. He whinged how she was being so difficult and seems firmly Team Anthony.

We can tell you one thing, we are absolutely not Team Caleb right now, that’s for sure (although obviously we desperately want him to be the dad).

Ruby later got the DNA results delivered, but Caleb arrived home before she could read them. He actually apologised for pushing her to forgive Anthony. Still not impressed with you, Caleb, apology or not.

Joe was plotting in Emmerdale tonight

Joe let Noah down over the Leeds tickets after Ross’ warning. Noah was disappointed. Charity was not disappointed.

Kim was also disappointed in Joe’s behaviour and wanted to know what was going on. Joe gave her some guff about being strategic and she told him she was impressed. Joe then commented he is “pretty sure I’ll get what I want” before he popped some more pills. Is what he wants one of Noah’s organs to save his life?

    Marlon teamed up with Ross

Hitting the streets of Leeds again, Marlon was handing out more flyers. Rhona meanwhile was struggling. She wants to know who gave the Hotten Courier the inside scoop on her past. She wondered if it was Vanessa.

Rhona admitted she was angry with April for putting them through this. Vanessa encouraged her to offload her troubles and get some sleep.

Out in Leeds, Marlon chased a girl down and pushed the man she was with over. It wasn’t April and then he saw the bloke was Ross. Ross confessed he had been looking for April every day. Marlon was not happy about it because he blamed Ross for April running away. However the men buried the hatchet and decided to search for her together. But it was soon clear they had a mountain to climb.

    Wendy’s the blabbermouth

Wendy looked very suspicious as she heard Ella and Vanessa discussing the Rhona article. Later Wendy was cornered by the journalist in the pub – she’s the one who’s revealed the info. Apparently it was just a chat and the journo has twisted things.

And now the journalist is blackmailing her, threatening to write about Wendy’s own past in order to get herself a story. Wendy has to bring her another story to stop it happening. So who will she turn on next?

    Also in Emmerdale tonight…

Moira was brushing her lucisious locks and knocked her surgery scar, it made her realise what she’s got to face ahead. Cain promised to support her. However, it was clear Moira was worried about the radiotherapy, asking if she might turn into the Hulk.

Back at home after the treatment Cain wrapped her up in cotton wool (aka a duvet) and looked after her, but something didn’t feel right to Moira – is she on to his deceit?
