Who was Donna Windsor? From romance with Ross Barton to tragic death

Emmerdale character Donna Windsor sent fans into tears after her dramatic death back in 2014, leaving little April without a mum.

The police officer was previously romantically involved with Ross Barton before her death. With his return to the Dales, all eyes are turning back to his exes.

Including the rollercoaster relationship between Donna and Ross. Here’s everything you need to know about Donna.

    Emmerdale: Donna Windsor backstory

Donna was born on the 31st December 1985 in East London and is daughter to Vic and Viv Windsor.

The family stayed in South London for a while, where Donna suffered something that would later seriously harm her.

Back in 1992, Vic was redecorating their flat and the ceiling collapsed, covering Donna in dust. She breathed in a lot of the dust but was not severely hurt, and unbeknown to her, had asbestos.

22 years later, Donna developed an asbestos-related cancer which took her life.

In 1993, the family left for Beckindale, Yorkshire, after having enough of London.

Emmerdale: Donna’s first stint in the Dales

You can take the girl out of the city, but not the city out of the girl. When the Windsors arrived to the Dales, they brought some of their behaviours with them.

Several fast drives and leaving gates open, but they eventually adapted.

Donna’s first big disaster was when she was in Kim’s Stables at the Home Farm when wreckage from a plane hit the stables after a plane crashed in the village.

Luckily, the Windsors survived the crash, but another disaster quickly arrived. The following year, she was on a tractor with Michael Feldmann when it was toppled over. Donna was injured, but made it through.

A legal battle ensued as Viv wanted to sue John Sugden as the incident happened under his leadership.

However, their attention turned elsewhere as 2 years later in January 1996, 10 year old Donna was accidentally shot by her half-brother, Scott Windsor.

    Donna’s relationships

In 2003, Donna started dating Robert Sugden whom she had previously bullied whilst at school. He dumped her for another woman, but they got back together eventually.

Things turned sour when Donna contracted chlamydia from him. The pair shared a turbulent relationships, but eventually ended after Robert had an affair.

She moved onto widower Marlon Dingle. Having finally got over the death of his wife Tricia, Marlon was ready to date again and found himself falling in love with Donna. He even proposed to her after a year.

Meanwhile, Donna struck up a close friendship with Max King, whom she enjoyed flirting with. When Max was killed in a car crash, caused by Donna’s ex-boyfriend Robert, Donna was devastated and Marlon tried to help her through her grief.

They got married eventually, even though Donna was not sure. She even confessed her love for Max, but they went through with it anyway.

Donna and Marlon were left looking after Marlon’s cousin Lillith‘s four children Luke, Matthew, Mark and Jon, following her arrest for armed robbery.

    Emmerdale: Donna and Ross

Crime was never far from Donna, after she and Ross were involved in a car chase after Viv was framed for fraud. However, there Ross and Donna developed feelings for each other, with Donna becoming Ross’ ‘one true love.’

She started an affair with him behind Marlon’s back. They split and got back together, on the promise she would never talk to Ross again. However, soon after Marlon cheated on her with Chas.

He told Donna that he did not love her as much as he loved Tricia and with that admission Donna left the village in a taxi for the train station. She did not come back for years.

After a few years, Donna came back with her four-year-old daughter April, after breaking up with her partner.

    Donna’s death

Marlon gave an emotional confession admitting that he didn’t love his daughter. Marlon eventually realised that he needed to bond with April, and as Donna and April were leaving Emmerdale, Marlon stood in front of her car, causing Donna to hit her head on the windscreen.

At the hospital, she revealed she had terminal cancer, but didn’t want her family to know.

She started acting out when she realised she didn’t have long left to live, and even got involved in crime. She restarted her affair with Ross.

However, in a final showdown with criminal Gary North, she told Ross that she loved him and then she took what she saw as the only way out of this situation and pulled Gary over the top of the car park.

The fall killed both of them, and remains one of Emmerdale’s biggest stunts to date.

  • Emmerdale viewers point out plot holes in Eric’s scam storyline: ‘This would have been flagged’

Emmerdale viewers point out plot holes in Eric’s scam storyline: ‘This would have been flagged’

Viewers have slammed the current Emmerdale Eric storyline as being “unrealistic”, as he lost all of his and Brenda’s money.

For a while, Pollard has struggled as his usual Parkinson’s medication has not been available. So, his behaviour has been quite erratic.

In the time he’s been on new meds, he has proposed to Brenda, booked them a honeymoon cruise and succeeded to lose everything.

    Eric’s cryptocurrency scam

Last night, Brenda struggled to see a future with Eric after finding out he invested her savings into a cryptocurrency scam – and lost everything.

When Jacob heard the news, he suggested the only way forward could be to sell the shop. At first, Eric was horrified at the thought, but he quickly realised it might be the way to keep Brenda.

Eric was adamant the money would still appear, believing it to be a huge misunderstanding. But when he tried to phone the guy in charge, he was heartbroken to hear the number was no longer in service.

As reality began to sink in that he had made a huge mistake, Jacob encouraged him to phone the police. But Brenda informed them she already had. And because the money was invested willingly, there was nothing they could do.

Viewers slammed this as “unrealistic” as banks would still try to help as much as they possibly can. Especially for Brenda, as she was not the one who transferred her own money.

One wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “In reality the banks would be liable for Eric’s situation. Unusual activity and large amounts would have been flagged and stopped.”

Another added: “There are places that could help, even just a little bit. Eric should listen to the ads on the radio. If you have been scammed more than £3K then they can help.”

“If you are scammed in any way, even if you think you made the choice willingly and cannot be helped, you should absolutely contact your bank and the police. That’s a ridiculously irresponsible take to allow go unquestioned in a narrative,” an annoyed third fan penned.

Another pointed out it might not have been of his own free will as he was under the influence of medication: “I was yelling at the TV last night for Liam to say to Brenda to tell the police about his Parkinson’s and meds and lack of judgement – surely that would then get his money back as wasn’t his free will (as such) like the police said?”

  • Emmerdale fans livid over Christmas Day episode shake-up: ‘Total disgrace!’

Emmerdale fans livid over Christmas Day episode shake-up: ‘Total disgrace!’

ITV has revealed its Christmas Day schedule and Emmerdale fans are furious over the show airing that day.

Christmas is traditionally a big time for the soaps, with viewers looking forward to storylines that have been building up over the year. And with show boss Iain MacLeod recently promising the “most exciting” Christmas in Emmerdale history, the stakes are pretty high.

So when it was revealed this week that the soap will only air for half an hour on Christmas Day, it left a bad taste in many fans’ throats.

The decorations are up, but will it be a Merry Christmas in Emmerdale? (Credit: ITV)

Emmerdale to air on Christmas Day

It has been confirmed that Emmerdale will air every night across the Christmas week on ITV. On Monday December 23 it will be on in it’s usual 7.30pm slot for half an hour. On Christmas Eve, it moves back to 7pm, but still for half an hour.

Then on Christmas Day Emmerdale will air at 6.30pm. This is an hour earlier than it usually shows. And it will only be on for half an hour.

Boxing Day we will get a full hour-length episode starting at 6.30pm and then on Friday December 27 it’s back to 30 minutes at 7.30pm.

Although this sticks to the soap’s usual amount of episodes, many fans have been left annoyed that there’s only a half an hour episode on Christmas Day.

    Fans react

“Emmerdale only on for 30 mins whilst Corrie gets a full one-hour slot,” said one. Someone replied to them: “Not fair.”

Another added: “Especially when it’s a Kim Tate Christmas. At least there’s an hour installment on Boxing Day.”

“No hour-long Emmerdale on Christmas Day again. Total disgrace,” raged one more.

Kim and Will are planning a Christmas vow renewal (Credit: ITV)

    Emmerdale confirms a Kim Christmas

Show boss Iain MacLeod told Digital Spy back in September: “This Christmas, there is a huge surprise arrival on Christmas Day. As well as some life or death jeopardy on Christmas Day – but obviously there will be festive brilliance as we do every year – but I think it is one of the most exciting Christmases that I can remember on Emmerdale this year!”

He continued to promise “incredibly heartbreaking family drama with plenty of Dingle action. There is also some classic gothic antics at Home Farm – some skullduggery!”

We’ve also been assured Belle will be in a much better place by Christmas. Phew!

And new spoilers have now revealed Kim Tate will be at the centre of Christmas 2024. Will is plotting against his wife after they recently reconciled. He’s in cahoots with her business advisor Peter and a mystery person to bring Kim down. And it’s all set to take off at Christmas.

Will asks her to renew their vows on Christmas Day and Kim is overjoyed. As she puts extra effort into making the festive season one to remember, does she know Will is plotting against her? Or will she be left heartbroken when she finds out?

For his part, Will is at least starting to feel a wave of guilt. But is it enough to make him stop the takedown altogether?

  • Is Brenda and Eric’s wedding off? Here’s everything we know about their fate following cryptocurrency scam

Is Brenda and Eric’s wedding off? Here’s everything we know about their fate following cryptocurrency scam

Eric Pollard has lost everything in Emmerdale – all his money, all of Brenda Walker‘s money, and now it looks like he’s about to lose Brenda, too.

But is it really over for the cute couple? Is their Christmas wedding definitely off?

It’s definitely not looking good. Here’s everything we know.

Emmerdale's Eric and Brenda talking in the shop
Will Brenda and Eric get a happy ending? (Credit: ITV)

Brenda and Eric’s wedding is on in Emmerdale

Eric was baffled when the increase in his investment wasn’t showing on his cryptocurrency account. He tried to speak to his finance advisor about it but got cut off – and that’s when Eric started to worry.

Elsewhere, Brenda had found the perfect wedding dress, but when she went to pay her card was declined. Eric told her it was a technical problem at the bank and fibbed that he’d spoken to someone about it.

But of course he was lying – he’d invested everything he had, and everything Brenda had, too, in the cryptocurrency scam.

In desperation he turned to the racing pages of the newspaper, hoping to win back the money he’d lost, when he was interrupted by Liam who clocked him taking cash from the till.

Worried Liam warned him that a rare side effect of his new medication was that it could make him act recklessly.

Backed into a corner, Eric confessed that he’d lost the cash, and had secured a loan on his house. Liam begged him to come off the medication, but Pollard insisted he was going to the bookies and threatened to call the police!

Eric threatened Liam with the police

    The wedding’s off!

Back home, Eric returned triumphant with Brenda’s wedding dress all bought and paid for. But it turned out Liam had spoken to Brenda and explained what her husband was up to. And she’d had a chat with the bank and found out the truth about what had happened to her savings.

A clearly devastated Brenda asked her fiancé what he was thinking, blowing her life savings. Eric tried to get round her by showing her his winnings because his horse had come in. But Brenda wasn’t listening. She told Eric his betrayal was so deep, she couldn’t get over it!

    Brenda looks upset

The wedding’s off but the couple are on!

Except she did! By today’s episode, Brenda was telling Eric that they were in it together. Though Eric was still convinced his money troubles were all just a big misunderstanding.

But later, a shocked and upset Eric told Brenda and Jacob that the number for his account manager was no longer in service and finally accepted he’d been scammed. And Brenda revealed that she’d already called the police who’d said there was nothing they could do.

Brenda had a chat with Liam, who told her he was convinced it was all a side effect of Pollard’s medication. But it’s too late now. “He’s ruined us,” she said. “Financially we’re sunk.”

But Liam assured her what Eric needed was her love and support. It looked bleak, though, when Brenda asked him what she needed.

And when she saw Eric in the street, she pointed out that he owned the house and everything she’d worked for was gone. Jacob suggested to his horrified grandfather that the only way to pay back Brenda’s money was to sell the shop.

So that’s exactly what he promised to do.

    Eric looks shocked
Jacob told Eric he needs to sell the shop (Credit: ITV)

    Brenda and Eric are off!

But Brenda had something else on her mind. She’d realised Eric was on his new meds when he proposed and she wanted to know if he meant it.

He admitted that he’d never intended to marry again, devastating poor Brenda, who assumed all the lovely things he’d said when he proposed were lies.

Later though, Eric told her he meant every word. He told her he didn’t mind if they got married or not, but said he didn’t know what he would do if Brenda ever left him.

    Brenda chats to Eric seriously?
    Will Brenda forgive Eric?

Brenda and Eric are on in Emmerdale – or are they?!

But then – hooray – Brenda assured him she wasn’t going anywhere.

And this makes us nervous! Because it’s been reported that actress Lesley Dunlop, who plays Brenda, is leaving her role after 16 years as Ms Walker.

So does this mean the wedding’s off or on? We’re really not sure now!

What happened in Emmerdale tonight: Smug Tom got a win and Pollard devastated Brenda multiple times

Emmerdale tonight saw Brenda Walker left distraught over and over again by Eric Pollard as he finally accepted he’d been scammed. And then she made a big decision about their future.

Meanwhile, Tom was smug when he called Angelica and realised she was on his side. How will he use this to his advantage?

Here’s everything that happened in Emmerdale tonight.

Things went from bad to worse for Brenda and Pollard (Credit: ITV)

Brenda stood by Pollard – despite him breaking her heart in Emmerdale tonight

Brenda had decided they were in this together, but Eric was still kidding himself that he could sort it all out. He soon realised he couldn’t when he found out his advisor’s number was no longer in service. They have been scammed. And the police can’t do anything because Pollard invested the money of his own free will.

Brenda was devastated, especially as Eric tried to placate her by saying at least they had a roof over their heads. But Brenda pointed out the deeds were in his name and everything she has worked all her life for was gone.

Knowing he needs to make it right, Pollard decided his only resort was to sell the shop. But Brenda was more concerned with whether he only proposed because he was hyped up on his meds and Eric confessed that was very possible. She was once again distraught.

But later she insisted she was not leaving and she would support him every step of the way through his Parkinson’s. Although as Brenda is actually leaving, we all know that isn’t going to happen!

Tom won Angelica over in Emmerdale tonight

Angelica was heading back to school and all was happy in the King household now Tom was out of their lives. But Angel insisted Tom was still family.

Tom phoned home and discovered he was calling Angelica and not his uncle Jimmy. But he was also relieved to hear Angel was on his side as he reeled her in and told her they would keep speaking. Smug Tom was filled with glee when he realised he had someone else to manipulate.

    Also in Emmerdale tonight…

    Caleb took Anthony’s side

Ross and Steph got flirty in the Hide, but then Anthony arrived. Steph decided to fight his corner with Ruby again after she learned Ruby was ignoring Anthony. Anthony then managed to manipulate Caleb into taking his side too.

Steph and Caleb confronted Ruby (who was making her own Christmas wreath – not sure this is something Ruby would do), who was most hurt by her husband’s interference.

Ross was under pressure – as Mack gloated

Ross went to see Charity, but encountered Mack instead. He wanted to pick Moses up after school and take him for a burger. But it turns out Moses has a VERY active after school social calendar with a birthday party and then bowling and then a sleepover at a mate’s.

Mack smugly told him he and Charity would be spoiling Moses this Christmas – but Ross still has no idea exactly how Mack got the money. Meanwhile, Mack splashed the cash on Charity’s Christmas presents wanting to spoil her rotten.

Elsewhere, Ross was feeling the pressure when both April and Jade rounded on him in the pub. April wanted to know why he’d ignored her since he’d been home and Jade wanted answers over her missing money.

Cut to Mack giving the cash to Amy for Chloe and Reuben. But he doesn’t want to see any pictures or know anything because it’s too hard being apart from his son. Probably should have remembered he had one, then shouldn’t he?

  • Chloe Harris and baby Reuben: Where they went and why Mack doesn’t see his son

Chloe Harris and baby Reuben: Where they went and why Mack doesn’t see his son

Mack is sad about his estranged son Reuben in tonight’s episode of Emmerdale and mentions Reuben’s mum, Chloe Harris too.

The little lad – who is now about 18 months old – got two mentions in today’s ep (Tuesday December 3), with Mack sharing his despair at not having contact with his son.

So as it’s almost a year since Reuben and his mum Chloe left the village, we thought it was time to recap everything that happened in their time in the Dales and where they’ve gone.

Emmerdale's Mack is holding Reuben, speaking to Chloe

    Chloe’s arrival

Everything about Chloe’s arrival in Emmerdale was a little bit odd!

She turned up first of all because her late sister, Gemma, was Sarah Sugden‘s heart donor. She and Sarah struck up a friendship, and it became clear that Chloe had a strange home life. She lived in a big house, but was all alone and despite having lots of cash, was lonely and sad.

In a strange twist, as viewers got to know Chloe better, it was revealed that her housekeeper was Kerry Wyatt! She was taking care of Chloe while her dad Damon was in prison. Not only that, but Damon had a team of creepy henchmen who were watching Chloe’s every move.

    Escape to Emmerdale

Eventually Chloe managed to flee her weird prison and moved to Emmerdale to live with Kerry and her daughter Amy. She struck up a romance with Noah Dingle, and the pair were quite cute for a minute, before Noah got – well – a bit dark.

When Chloe lost interest in Noah and turned her attention to older man Nate Robinson, Noah wasn’t happy. He started being more than a little sinister, snooping through Chloe’s things – including her underwear – and taking hundreds of photos of her. He even held her hostage!

Not surprisingly, Chloe was not happy about this turn of events and Noah ended up going to prison for three months.

Another twist for Chloe Harris in Emmerdale

In 2022, Mack had a one-night stand with a mystery person while he was on a break from then girlfriend Charity after she had a miscarriage. What a gem he is, eh?

Fans were convinced it could have been Aaron Dingle but disappointingly his secret lover turned out to be Chloe.

And when Chloe inevitably turned out to be pregnant, things got even messier.

Chloe didn’t want Mackenzie to know at first, and planned to leave. Kerry was desperate for her to stay and revealed that she was actually Chloe’s real mum. Whaaaaat?!

    Baby blues

Chloe eventually told Mack the news but he’d reconciled with Charity and didn’t want to know. Things got tricky, though, when Charity took Chloe under her wing and even invited her to live with them for a while.

There was a lot of to-ing and fro-ing between Mack and Chloe as he struggled to secretly support her through her pregnancy and during Reuben’s birth.

But of course, Charity eventually found out. She was FUMING. She and Mack broke up and he tried to make a go of it with Chloe.

    Clifftop plunge for Chloe Harris

But the dream of playing happy families fell apart when Mack cheated on Chloe with Charity. Chloe worked it all out and plotted to leave, but actually ended up in the car with Mack and Charity too. And in dramatic scenes, the car plunged off the road. As it teetered on the edge of a cliff, Mack chose to save Charity, leaving Chloe to die when the car crashed down.

Except she didn’t die. In fact, she was fine! But out for revenge.

    Harry Harris

Criminal Harry had been seen on screen before, getting close to Chas Dingle in order to take revenge on her brother Caleb. But it turned out he was actually Chloe’s dad, Damon! Who was also called Harry!

Harry was sinister and abusive, and when he found out about the car accident he decided to take revenge on Mackenzie. Except Harry went a bit too far and held Mack hostage. When Chloe, and then Charity worked it out, they tried to rescue him. A struggle happened and Charity accidentally shot and killed Harry!

Chloe saw a chance to make this work to her advantage and said she’d cover up Charity’s crime and back up her story, if Mack let her and baby Reuben go without a fight.

Mack agreed, though he was heartbroken. He said a tearful goodbye to his son, and off they went, never to be seen again.

Chloe has kept in touch with her sister Amy and mum Kerry. In today’s episode, Amy reported that both Chloe and Reuben were “thriving”.

Who played Chloe Harris in Emmerdale?

Chloe was played by television newcomer Jessie Elland.

Talented Jessie is also a writer and her debut novel The Ladie Upstairs – described as a feminist horror story – will be published next year.

Steph and Ruby to get pregnant at same time? New fan theory predicts

A new Emmerdale fan theory has suggested that Ruby Fox-Miligan and her daughter Steph could both find themselves pregnant at the same time.

Ruby and Steph were recently reunited after 10 years without seeing one another. Following the death of Ruby’s estranged mother, Steph arrived in the Dales to claim her inheritance.

The atmosphere between mother and daughter was originally frosty, but they appear to be getting their relationship back on track. Though fans have now predicted a bump in the road, or rather, two bumps in the road…

    Ruby and Steph’s relationship

Steph Miligan arrived in Emmerdale last month. She hadn’t seen her parents in 10 years, so it was no surprise that things were hostile when Steph and Ruby came face-to-face for the first time.

Steph felt that her mother abandoned her and shipped her off to boarding school because she couldn’t be bothered. A conversation about Steph’s childhood resulted in the two women arguing, culminating in Ruby slapping her daughter.

The two women have reconciled somewhat and are working through their issues. Though this hasn’t been helped by the arrival of Ruby’s estranged dad Anthony, who shared a cancer diagnosis with his family.

Steph and Ruby pregnancy fan theory

Despite being married to Caleb, Ruby recently had a fling with his brother Cain Dingle. While Steph spent the night with Ross Barton.

Fans have been speculating that the two women could fall pregnant at the same time. After a fan on Reddit asked: “Who thinks Steph is gonna get preggers with her and Ross’s baby?” another fan suggested that Ruby will also be pregnant and “Caleb will realise the morning-after pill packaging he found in the trash was not Steph’s.”

A third fan went one step further and suggested Ross could be the father of both babies, writing: “I think he’ll have both Ruby and Steph up the duff at the same time.” The poster expanded on their theory and wrote: “I mean he was in love with Debbie around the same time her mum gave birth to his son, Moses!! Don’t get why Debbie didn’t get pregnant as well!! Would have been a bigger thing then!!”

What a turn for the books that would be!

Mark Charnock reveals ‘very personal’ story behind directing debut as he joins GMB One Million Minutes campaign

Emmerdale star Mark Charnock has taken on a new role and has shared the personal story behind his directing debut.

Mark, who has played Marlon Dingle in Emmerdale since 1996, appeared on Good Morning Britain today (Tuesday, December 3) to discuss his directorial debut.

The actor has stepped behind the camera to direct a heart-tugging film entitled ‘Life Long Fans.’ The short film accompanies GMB’s 1 Million Minutes initiative, which aims to combat loneliness. The idea is for viewers to pledge their time to charities that tackle the issues of loneliness.

Mark said he was honoured to be asked and revealed that he also has a personal link to the project.

The actor appeared on Good Morning Britain, where he spoke to Susanna Reid and Ed Balls about turning his hand to directing.

The project is in partnership with GMB’s 1 Million Minutes initiative. Mark’s accompanying emotional short features clips of two friends going to watch football together through the years. Once they reach old age, one of the friends passes away, while the other friend is shown at the football looking sad with an empty seat next to him.

That fan is left feeling isolated and lonely and no longer enjoys watching the football without his mate beside him. But the video ends on a hopeful note when the man’s wife arranges for his family to join him in watching the football.

Susanna and Ed described the film as ‘moving,’ while Mark admitted it was an ‘amazing experience.’

The Marlon star revealed that when he was asked to come up with the story for the film, he had to rack his brains, but then inspiration came to him.

“Something so close to home, I almost missed it,” he said. He then shared his story, revealing: “I had two uncles, both of whom have passed away now. John and Michael. They were quite close in age and were like twins really. They did everything together and been going and watching Man United since the late 50s and all through the decades…

“Then quite out of the blue, the older brother passed away. And it broke my other uncle in half really. He lost half of himself. You know, he was OK, the years went by until he passed away, but those last 10/15 years he had without him, he was never really the same.”

He added: “Football gets a bad rap, but at its heart it’s a working class sport that brought people together.”
