Emmerdale missing family members: from Dingles to Miligans, where have these characters gone – and could any make a comeback?

Emmerdale is all about family, and every clan has members who are missing from our screens. But where are these characters currently? And what are the chances of them making a comeback to the soap?

From the Dingles to Tates, Sugdens to Sharmas, here are all the faces we haven’t seen in a while. And there’s even one in there we’re yet to meet…

    Tina Dingle

Tina’s return to Emmerdale caused a real stir. The long lost Dingle hadn’t been seen for 28 years before she rocked up at her father Zak’s funeral, with a brand new face.

In the weeks that followed, Tina caused a lot of carnage. She tried to lay claim to Zak’s will, then dropped the bombshell that she was Vinny’s real mum and tried to blackmail Mandy over the secret. In the end, Vinny issued Tina an ultimatum – either stay in his life, or take £50k, return Zak’s will and leave Emmerdale.

Tina showed her true colours by choosing money over family and with that she was gone. But is that it? Surely we’re going to see more from Tina in 2025, otherwise what was the point?

    Samson Dingle

Sam’s troublemaking son proved himself to a real chip off the block. And following the tradition of many of his family members, he’s currently serving time in prison.

Samson’s downfall came when he formed a friendship with local thug Josh Cope. The pair’s lies put Matty Barton in jail for a crime he didn’t commit and pushed the poor bloke to the brink. After months of living under his control, Samson found the courage to fight back against Josh.

After attacking his former friend, Samson was arrested and sentenced to four years inside. That was last summer, which means there’s a chance Samson will be out next year if he keeps his nose clean.

    Nathan Dingle

Only ever mentioned by name once, Nathan Dingle remains something of a mystery. He’s the eldest of Zak’s seven children and the only one we’ve never seen on screen. So what actually happened to him?

The story – as told by Tina Dingle back in 1995 – is that Nathan disowned the Dingles after thinking he was too good for them. Tina claimed her brother was stuck up and ashamed of his roots. She also revealed the family had no contact with him since a fight broke at Nathan’s wedding.

Interestingly the character has never been brought up in conversation again, but that’s not stopped fans speculating how and when Nathan could return to Emmerdale. There’s definitely potential for a story with the long-lost Dingle, and we’d love to know what he’s been up to all these years.

    Debbie Dingle in Emmerdale

    Debbie Dingle

Debbie and her son Jack, who’s now 12, haven’t been seen since they moved up to Scotland in early 2021. They were living with Zak until his death last year, and Debbie was the one who broke the news to the family.

It was thought she might come home for her grandfather’s funeral, but Cain revealed Debbie had decided to stay put. Fans are still hoping that a comeback is on the cards.

There’s definitely a place for Debbie in Emmerdale, particularly with the recent return of her ex-lovers Ross Barton and Joe Tate. These two hate each other’s guts, but we’d love to watch them fight over Debbie. So bring her back and let the games begin.

Emmerdale missing family members: The Fox-Miligans

    Nicky Miligan in Emmerdale

    Nicky Miligan

Emmerdale is all about the Miligans right now, and it’s a shame Nicky is missing from the action.

Caleb and Ruby’s son turned his back on the village – and them -  last year after growing tired of their toxic games. Nicky is now living abroad with his fella Suni Sharma and has limited contact with his folks. Steph is still on speaking terms with her brother, which gives us hope of seeing Nicky again.

The next few months looks set to be huge for the Miligans, with the ongoing mystery of who killed Anthony. And we’re now wondering if we’ve been hasty in overlooking Nicky as a suspect in his grandfather’s murder? That would be one heck of a twist, but we’re here for it.

Who are the missing members of the Tates in Emmerdale?

Zoe Tate and baby Jean Tate in Emmerdale

    Zoe Tate

Village vet Zoe was a central player in Emmerdale back in the 90s. The only daughter of Frank Tate, she made history as the first lesbian character in a British soap.

Zoe’s life was always full of drama. She had a memorable affair with her brother Chris’s wife, Charity, was diagnosed with schizophrenia, and fell pregnant during a mental episode.

Her departure in 2005, which saw Zoe blow up Home Farm, has gone down as one of Emmerdale’s best ever exits. For the past 20 years Zoe has been living in New Zealand with her daughter Jean.

Sadly, actress Leah Bracknell died in 2019 from cancer, so unless they recast, we doubt we’ll ever see her again. But surely she’s due an off-screen death and tribute, which could then lead to the return of…

    Jean Tate

Jean is the daughter of Zoe Tate and local womaniser Scott Windsor. She was conceived while Zoe was experiencing a schizophrenic episode and she had no memory of her one-night stand with Scott.

Aged only two and half when she emigrated to New Zealand with her mum, Jean would be 22 now. We’d love to see how she’s turned out and if she’s inherited any Tate traits.

    Jamie Tate in Emmerdale

    Jamie Tate

Kim’s manipulative son Jamie was proof that the apple never falls far from the tree.

He spent most of his early years in boarding school after Kim was sent to prison. He also trained as a vet, married Andrea and became a father to daughter Millie.

But everything went wrong when he decided to join his mum in the Dales. Jamie wrecked his marriage by getting Gabby Thomas pregnant, he also tried to bump Kim off by poisoning her.

Kim wised up to Jamie’s game, so he faked his own death. He was later revealed to be alive and well, living with Millie and her gran Hazel.

Will he come back to cause even more carnage?

    Millie Tate

Little Millie would be 10-years-old now, but Kim seems to have forgotten the granddaughter that was once the apple of her eye.

After the death of her mum Andrea, Millie moved away with her grandma Hazel and Jamie. She was last seen in 2022 when Millie and Hazel turned up to Thomas Tate’s christening.

Emmerdale missing family members: The Bartons

Adam Barton makes a call in Emmerdale

    Adam Barton

Can you believe it’s been seven years since Adam went on the run after taking the blame for Emma Barton’s murder? He fled the country on the day of his sentencing, abandoning his past for a life as a fugitive. And it was all done to protect his mum Moira – Emma’s real killer.

Fans were teased with the possibility of Adam’s return when Moira paid her son a visit last year. But he obviously feels it’s not yet safe to set foot back in the village.

Actor Adam Thomas has often expressed a desire to revisit the character, so could 2025 be the year he comes home?

    Pete Barton in Emmerdale
Pete has chosen to remain living in Liverpool for now (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)

    Pete Barton

After Ross’s explosive comeback, fans predicted Pete wouldn’t be far behind his brother. But so far he’s kept away.

Pete, who was played by Anthony Quinlan, is best remembered for the love triangle involving him, Ross and Debbie Dingle. He beat Ross to near death after discovering he’d been sleeping with his wife, and ended up in prison.

The brothers eventually realised blood was thicker than water and made up. Ross relocated to Liverpool with girlfriend Rebecca White in 2018, and Pete joined him in 2020.

We assume he’s still there as there’s because Ross hasn’t said otherwise. So will Pete be paying him a visit? Only time will tell.

Emmerdale missing family members: The Sugdens

    Robert Sugden

There’s not a year that goes by without rumours of Robert returning to Emmerdale. The slippery Sugden was one of Emmerdale’s most popular characters and his relationship with Aaron Dingle captured the hearts of millions.

The pair’s love story came to an end in 2019 when Rob was sentenced to 14 years in prison for the manslaughter of his sister Victoria’s rapist Lee Posner.

It has since transpired Lee’s brother, Luke, may have been to blame for his sibling’s fatal injuries. Now that sounds like a get-out-of-jail card that needs to be played.

Robert’s return would certainly put the cat amongst the pigeons in terms of Aaron’s romance with John. But who doesn’t enjoy a spicy love triangle?

    Andy Sugden on Emmerdale

    Andy Sugden

There’s been an Andy Sugden shaped-hole in Emmerdale since 2016.

The iconic character was played by Kelvin Fletcher on the soap for an epic two decades. Since quitting the role that made him a household name, Kelvin went on to scoop the glitterball in the 2019 series of Strictly Come Dancing.

He’s currently starring in ITV reality series Fletchers’ Family Farm alongside wife Liz Marsland and their four children.

Andy time in the village came to a dramatic end after he was framed by Chrissie White for the shooting of her father, Lawrence. Forced to go on the run, Andy fled with the help of Robert and ex-girlfriend Bernice Blackstock.

Still a fugitive, Andy’s whereabouts remain unknown. But he hasn’t been killed off, which keeps the hope of a comeback alive.

    Diane Sugden in Emmerdale
There will never be another Diane Sugden (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)

    Diane Sugden

Diane was the beloved landlady of The Woolpack for 17 years and the life-blood of the village. She was a true survivor – overcoming cancer, a near-fatal stabbing and being fleeced by her conman lover.

Actress Elizabeth Estensen, announced her retirement from acting in 2021. Diane swapped the Dales for a new life in sunny Portugal, and it’s unlikely we’ll see her again our screens. Which is more the pity.

Emmerdale missing family members: The Kings

Sadie King stands in front of Home Farm
Scheming Sadie was a joy to watch (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)

    Sadie King

Superbitch Sadie was an absolute queen and one of Emmerdale’s greatest bad girls. Played by Patsy Kensit, Sadie wrecked havoc for two unforgettable years.

The money-hungry minx was married to eldest King brother Jimmy, but only for his money. She had affairs with Cain Dingle, Robert Sugden and even Jimmy’s own brother Matthew.

Sadie tried various ways to get her greedy mitts on the King family fortune, but ultimately failed. She made her great escape in 2006, and sent flowers for Tom Senior’s funeral in 2007. No one has heard a peep from her since, but we long for a Sadie comeback.

    Anya King

Carl King had two kids. Now we know all about his wicked son Tom, but what about daughter Anya?

While never a regular character, Anya has appeared in 67 episodes over the years. She moved to Saudi Arabia with her mum Colleen in 2010, then returned for Carl’s disaster of a wedding to Chas that Christmas.

She was last seen on screen in 2012 after Carl’s murder. When Tom returned to the village in 2023 he revealed he and Anya were no longer close.

Anya would now be 26 and has no family left after Colleen died of a heart attack in 2023. Perhaps she could pop back and give her old Uncle Jimmy a visit.

    Scarlett Nicholls in Emmerdale
Tom King’s daughter Scarlett lives in Canada now (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)

    Scarlett Nicholls

One of the lesser known members of the King clan, Scarlett was the illegitimate daughter of Tom Senior and nurse Carrie Nicholls. Her existence was only discovered in the aftermath of Tom’s murder. As per her father’s will, Scarlett inherited 25 percent of Home Farm.

She lived with big brother Jimmy after Carrie emigrated to Canada. Scarlett had romances with Aaron Dingle and Adam Barton, both of which ended badly.

Scarlett left to join her mum abroad in July 2011, and made a brief return in October 2012. She’s not been spoken about since.

Emmerdale missing family members: The Sharmas

Nikhil Sharma and Jai Sharma in Emmerdale
It has been years since Nikhil visited his brother Jai (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)

    Nikhil Sharma

Socially awkward Nikhil was Jai’s right hand man, and together they ran the sweet factory.

He was also popular with the ladies. After a brief engagement to Maisie Wylde, Nikhil went on to marry Gennie Walker, and they had a daughter, Molly. After Gennie was murdered by serial killer Cameron Murray in 2013, heartbroken Nikhil decided he couldn’t stay in the village. He and Molly moved away to Canada.

He came back for a brief stint in November 2015 when actor Rik Makarem reprised his role. Nikhil proposed to Leyla Harding, but broke the engagement off after realising she didn’t love him. He then flew back to Canada with Molly.

The last mention of Nikhil was in 2017 when he contracted meningitis and Rishi, Bob and Brenda travelled to Canada to help look after him.

Priya Sharma in Emmerdale looking worried
Poor Priya had a tough time in the village (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)

    Priya Kotecha

Priya is the youngest of the Sharma siblings and spent 14 years in the village. Over that time she battled anorexia, almost died in a fire, had affairs with Cain Dingle and Pete Barton and a short-lived marriage to Rakesh Kotecha.

After accepting an exciting new job in London, Priya and daughter Amba left the Dales in January 2023.

That was two years back and there’s been no word from Priya since. We hope she’s having better luck in her new life.

  • From Adam Barton to Joe Tate – all the characters Emmerdale need to recast now

From Adam Barton to Joe Tate – all the characters Emmerdale need to recast now

The Emmerdale cast is ever-changing, whether that’s growing or shrinking or a recast – there’s always something happening.

But occasionally when they lose a fan-favourite for various reasons, the show takes a hit. So sometimes these characters appear back on our screens looking completely different.

Recasting characters is a tricky move. The show needs to find someone who will do the role justice and has a familiar feeling. But it does pay off sometimes.

So here are some characters that everyone wants back on the show – even if they need to be recasted.

    Adam Barton
Should a new Adam Barton join the Emmerdale cast? (Credit: ITV)

    Emmerdale recast: Adam Barton.

Adam Thomas played this iconic Barton boy from his first arrival on screen in 2009, right up to his exit in 2018.

But many fans feel that Adam should be back in the village, especially since Moira just had brain surgery.

His return to the village could work so well with many of the current storylines. So why not?

While some fans on a reddit thread called for him to be recast, others believed they couldn’t see him “played by anyone else.”

    Joe Tate Emmerdale
Should Joe come back? (Credit: ITV)

    Joe Tate

While many argued on reddit that some characters shouldn’t be recasted, they seemed to agree that Joe Tate could be – if Ned Porteous didn’t want to return to the show.

Joe’s exit in 2018 left a lot of things unsaid and waiting. The potential storylines that could work if the show had a Joe Tate return is endless.

And many fans on that reddit thread agree because Ned “only stayed a short amount of time” on the show, a recast wouldn’t be completely ridiculous.

However, there are a lot of theories Joe is the mystery man working to take down Kim Tate at Christmas…

    Debbie Dingle
Fans would like to see Debbie return for current storylines. (Credit: ITV)

    Debbie Dingle

Just like Adam, this one is tricky. Charley Webb created a statement character during her time on Emmerdale. And so to imagine anyone else playing her would be strange.

But it’s still not impossible. Charley has made numerous returns to Emmerdale over the years, but none seem to have stuck.

If there was any time that would be good for a Debbie return – it would be now.

She would be arriving right back into family drama. Cain has just cheated on Moira, and Charity is dealing with the Ross and Mackenzie feud. So who better to help Ross through it than the girl he spent years wanting to be with?

    Daz Eden Emmerdale
Despite leaving years ago – fans wonder if Daz should have been recast. (Credit: ITV / YouTube)

    Emmerdale recast: Daz Eden

This one takes fans back a while. Luke Tittensor played the role from 2003 until his sudden exit in 2009.

The years he spent on the show, he was at the height of some huge storylines, and his character seemed to mix well with others.

Unfortunately Luke’s contract got terminated in 2009 as he pled guilty to grievous bodily harm and so Daz left Emmerdale.

But some fans commented that his identical twin brother, Elliot, could easily appear in the show to bring Daz back.

They wrote: “I will never understand why they didn’t recast Daz Eden. He could have been recast with his identical twin brother.”

It would be a blast from the past, but it would create a shake-up to the Emmerdale cast.

    John Sugden
Should Oliver Farnworth have played Jamie Tate? (Credit: ITV)

    Was John wrongly cast?

Some fans point out that Oliver Farnworth’s talents aren’t being completely shown through his portrayal of John Sugden.

Instead they believe he should have been an entirely different character.

A user wrote: “Oliver Farnworth should have been a Jamie recast. Although he would have to put on a southern accent.”

One pointed out he is “far too old”, but another backed them reminding them that “Emmerdale change ages all the time.”

    Robert Sugden Emmerdale
Fans agree Robert was Emmerdale’s most successful recast. (Credit: ITV)

    An Emmerdale recast that worked!

There is a lot of debate on reddit about the issues of recasting characters. While it’s quite normal and frequent for soaps to change a young actor (Sarah and Gabby for example), it’s quite rare for a successful older recast.

One fan pointed out that Robert Sugden was Emmerdale’s last successful recast, noting the issue seems to be the writing changes.

Ryan Hawley took over the role from Karl Davies in 2014. And he immediately fit right in.

They wrote: “Recasting hasn’t been great for many years now. But the main problem is Emmerdale’s writing changes the character. They don’t fully know what they want to do with their direction and give them anything, even if it doesn’t make sense to their previous personality.”

Who would you like to see recast?

Emmerdale review of the week: Ross is back! Rebecca’s dead! And Nicola’s on the warpath!

This week’s Emmerdale review is full of disbelief! Because we’ve had some very bad news about Rebecca and we’re really sad about it. But there have been some moments that made us laugh, too.

Here’s what’s got us sobbing and chuckling in this week’s Emmerdale review.

Ross Barton in the barn before the fight
    Ross is back! (Credit: ITV)

    Ross Barton is back!

We were delighted to hear Ross was coming back! He’s got so much history with people in the village, and we were with him every step of the way when he was coming to terms with the injuries from his acid attack.

Billy and Ross face off with Jade in between
Yes, we get it, you’ve both got big arms. Are we done now? (Credit: ITV)

But we didn’t like his arrival

But as much as we love Ross, we really dislike this whole bare-knuckle fighting storyline. Billy may be the most boring man in the village, and he’s not made more interesting by punching other men in the face.

Plus the whole set-up barely makes sense – if it was so important for Billy to lose the fight, why not just tell him that? It’s hardly an honest game anyway, so the whole thing being a set-up wouldn’t be a surprise, surely?

Anyway, that aside, the reveal that Ross was Billy’s opponent didn’t thrill us.

BUT despite his yawnworthy arrival, and the knowledge that there is more boxing boredom to come, we are loving Ross being back in the village.

Emmerdale's Mack, Mary and Ross are serious in the pub
The soft turnip, Mary and Ross (Credit: ITV)

Ross putting Mack in his place in our Emmerdale review

Of course one of the best things about Ross is him putting Mack firmly into his place. We especially enjoyed him calling Mack a “soft turnip” which is exactly what we’re going to call him from now on.

    Ross and Rebecca get together
Ross and Rebecca were such a cute couple (Credit: ITV)

But there’s bad news too, in our Emmerdale review

We loved Rebecca White. Her total disregard for morals, her funny comments, and her redemption storyline after her brain injury all made her one of our fave characters. And we really loved her and Ross bonding over their life-changing injuries (not to mention their love of Real Hairdressers of Harrogate).

So we were devastated to discover that she and Ross had broken up – only to get the news seconds later that Rebecca is dead! WHAT? It’s such sad news, and yet another young woman killed off in soap, albeit off-screen.

    Adam Barton and Moira hugging
See how happy Adam makes everyone?! (Credit: ITV)

    Bring back Adam!

We were thrilled to hear Moira’s gone to visit her son Adam. And we are hoping she brings him back with her. Yes, we’ve been hoping that since he left in 2018, but honestly, we’re never giving this up. Never.

    Nicola's furious with Tom
    Yay, Nicola! (Credit: ITV)

Don’t get on Nicola’s bad side

We are LOVING Nicola’s one-woman campaign against Tom. She’s totally got the measure of him (finally) and she is not giving in. We were so pleased that she took little Carl down to the police station partly because it was the right thing to do, and partly because it proved to her son that she had his back – especially when muppet dad Jimmy clearly doesn’t.

Plus we’re still loving DS Foy. More of him, please!

  • The Barton family tree: From Mucky Moira to tragic John, James and Emma

The Barton family tree: From Mucky Moira to tragic John, James and Emma

The Barton family in Emmerdale burst onto our screens in 2009. The brood were the brainchild of the then executive producer Gavin Blyth, who wanted to overhaul the show by bringing in a sexy, modern farming family.

The Bartons were originally a five piece, made up of farmer John, his wife Moira and their three teenage children – Holly, Adam and Hannah.

Four years later saw the arrival of John’s older brother James Barton, and his three sons, Pete, Ross and Finn. And then along came James’s former wife, Emma – who definitely brought the drama with her.

Like the ill-fated King family, the Bartons rank up there with Emmerdale’s most cursed clans. Half of them are now six feet under and only Moira and Matty (formerly Hannah) remain in the village flying the Barton flag.

Here’s a breakdown of who is (or was) who in the brood and their major moments.

Moira Dingle aka Natalie J Robb in Emmerdale
The most glam farmer around, Moira! (Credit: ITV)

Moira Dingle – nee Barton, matriarch of the family in Emmerdale

Moira, played by Natalie J Robb, is one of Emmerdale’s most popular characters.

She came to the village in July 2009, when she and husband John purchased Butlers Farm from the newly-divorced Andy Sugden.

Moira and John were childhood sweethearts. They’d married young and had three teenage children – son Adam and daughters Holly and Hannah (who later transitioned to Matty).

On the outside, the Bartons were a solid couple. However, it wasn’t long before Moira found herself unable to resist the charms of a certain Cain Dingle.

Their affair ended Moira’s marriage to John, who then sadly perished in a car crash.
After John’s untimely death, Moira reunited with Cain and went on to marry him in 2014.

Two years later Moira’s world was shattered when daughter Holly died from a heroin overdose.

Happiness followed in 2017 when she gave birth to Cain’s son Isaac. But his arrival came as something of a shock to Moira, who didn’t realise she was pregnant.

Moira and Cain’s marriage has survived betrayals on both sides but they remain one of soap’s most popular partnerships.

    John Barton

John Barton, played by James Thornton, was Moira’s first husband. A farmer by trade, John was a loyal and hardworking man who always tried to put his family first.

John had an older brother called James, but the pair fell out after James bedded Moira. Moira strayed again with Cain Dingle, which broke John’s heart and led him to end their marriage.

The couple came close to a reunion, but fate dealt them a cruel blow when John was killed in a car crash.

    Holly Barton

Holly Barton, played by Sophie Powles, was Moira and John’s first-born child.

The party-loving schoolgirl was the most unruly of the Barton kids. After a brief fling with a still-closeted Aaron Dingle, Holly began dabbling with cocaine.

Her recreational drug use spiraled into an uncontrollable heroin addiction, which saw her resorting to theft and prostitution to fund her habit. Moira and John took action and forced Holly to go cold turkey. But the trauma of her dad’s death caused her to relapse.

After eventually getting clean Holly moved to London with her sister Hannah in 2012.
She returned four years later on the run from a drug dealer.

Sadly Holly couldn’t beat her addiction and suffered a fatal overdose in September 2016. The character’s death, which wasn’t announced before transmission, has gone down as one of Emmerdale’s most dramatic exits.

He could come back… (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)

    Adam Barton

Adam Barton, played by Adam Thomas, is the son of Moira and her late brother-in-law James. He didn’t discover the identity of his biological dad until he was in his twenties, and had always assumed he was the son of John.

A down to earth cheeky chap, Adam struck up a bromance with Aaron Dingle, which endured throughout his time in the village.

Adam married Victoria Sugden in 2015. However, his fertility problems meant the couple were unable to have children.

The character left the village in 2018 after admitting to the murder of his aunt Emma Barton, to protect his mum Moira, who was the real killer. After ‘confessing’ to the crime, Adam decided to go on the run and escaped in a shipping container.

Now divorced from Vic, Adam remains a fugitive and is living abroad somewhere.

Matty looks upset and beaten in his prison cell
Things have been hard for Matty this year (Credit: ITV)

    Matty Barton

Matty Barton – formerly known as Hannah – is Moira and John’s youngest child.
The character, who has been played by Ash Palmisciano since 2018, identified as female during his early years in the village.

As a teenager, Matty was shy and had a string of short-lived flings with unsuitable lads. After flunking his A-levels, Matty went to live in London with his sister Holly.
During his time there, Hannah transitioned to male and changed his name to Matty.

He returned to Emmerdale in 2018 and underwent top surgery the following year.
Matty got his happy ever after in 2024 when he married long term girlfriend Amy Wyatt.

However a stint in prison earlier this year has changed him for good. In a male prison, forced to hide his trans secret, Matty, who was innocent, found life very hard. He even arranged for his cellmate to beat him up as he felt safer in hospital than inside.

James Barton and his family in Emmerdale

Fellow farmer and single dad James Barton, played by Bill Ward, set up home in village in October 2013. He was the brother of John Barton and father of Pete, Ross, Finn and Adam Barton (who was originally thought to be John’s son).

James and John had been close growing up, but became estranged after James slept with John’s wife Moira – which later transpired had resulted in her conceiving Adam.
James raised his sons Pete, Ross and Finn alone after ex-wife Emma walked out on them.

He started a romance with Woolpack landlady Chas Dingle, but she dumped him after Emma returned on the scene and schemed her way back into James’s affections.

James’s fate was sealed when he started to grow closer to Moira again. Jealous Emma held him hostage, and when he tried to escape her clutches she pushed him off a bridge. This started a chain of events that led to the Hotton Bypass Crash.

Miraculously, James survived the fall, but succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

    Emma Barton

Emma Barton, played by Gillian Kearney, was the unhinged former wife of James Barton. She was also mum to his three sons, Pete, Ross and Finn.

The character had a complicated and messy backstory.

As a young mother, Emma had been gripped by postnatal depression and terrified of her husband James’s closeness to sister-in-law, Moira.

Pushed to the edge, she attempted to suffocate her middle son, Ross with a pillow – which was witnessed by his older brother, Pete. Emma had then fled, abandoning her family and wasn’t heard from for more than 20 years.

Two decades later, Emma was tracked down by her youngest lad, Finn and came to live in the village. She eventually reconciled with all her boys and got back together with ex-husband, James.

But Emma was unable to get over the revelation that James had fathered a child with Moira.

After making it look as if James’s fall was an accident, Emma got away with murder for 10 months until Finn found out the truth and she unintentionally shot him dead.

Emma met her own grisly end when she was pushed off a viaduct by sister-in-law Moira in a storyline dubbed ‘Who Killed Emma Barton?’

    Pete Barton

Pete Barton, played by Anthony Quinlan, is the eldest son of the late James and Emma Barton and probably best remembered for his rivalry with brother Ross.

On the day of his wedding to Debbie Dingle, Pete discovered she’d been sleeping with Ross behind his back. But before he could do anything a helicopter crashed into their venue!

In the aftermath, Pete believed he’d killed Ross and drove his body to the woods, where he dumped him. Ross was later revealed to be alive, and Pete and Debbie got their marriage annulled.

Pete also had a short stint in prison after he assaulted Ross.

After failed romances with Tracy Robinson, Rhona Goskirk and making a pass at his Auntie Moira (ick!), Pete left the village in February 2020 to go and live with Ross in Liverpool.

    Ross Barton

Ross Barton is the bad boy middle son of the late James and Emma Barton.

He was a hugely popular character and actor Michael Parr won numerous awards for his portrayal of the Dales bad lad.

The stereotypical black sheep of the family, Ross preferred to play by his own rules. Ross was initially characterised as a criminal. His first appearance saw him hijacking Laurel Thomas’s car.

But underneath that hard man exterior was a soft centre, which was shown during his romance with cancer-stricken Donna Windsor.

Ross had an eye for the ladies – he bedded Charity Dingle (which resulted in her getting pregnant with Moses) and also had an affair with her daughter Debbie.

After enduring the loss of his father James, Ross faced his darkest hour in 2018 when he was scarred for life in a targeted acid attack.

Later that year, Ross decided he was done with the Dales and left to start a new life with his girlfriend Rebecca White and her son Sebastian.

    Tragic Finn Barton in Emmerdale

Finn Barton was Pete and Emma’s youngest son and little brother to Ross and Pete.
The character was played by Joe Gill.

Studious, and far more sensible than both his brothers, Finn had just finished a degree in economics when he arrived in the village. With big plans to travel in Asia, Finn took on a job as a cleaner at The Grange B&B to earn money.

Finn was openly gay, but didn’t have much luck with men. One particular date, Brad, spiked his drink, which resulted in Finn ending up in hospital.

He was besties with Victoria Sugden, and they made a pact to marry if they both reached 30 and were still single.

In 2015, Finn tracked down his estranged mum Emma and forgave her for running out on them when he was a baby.

Unfortunately his decision to allow Emma back into his life proved to be fatal one.
Finn died in 2017 after being accidentally shot by Emma.

He was taken to hospital but suffered a cardiac arrest and passed away, aged just 25.

    Adam Barton’s Emmerdale exit

A part of the Barton family, Adam was the eldest son of John and Moira. Although he later discovered his real dad was actually his uncle, James Barton. This news gave him three more brothers in the form of Pete, Ross and Finn Barton.

After Hannah’s departure (and subsequent return as Matty) and Holly’s death, Adam was Moira’s rock. However he left the soap after confessing to murder to protect his mum.

Moira had offed crazed Emma Barton by pushing her off a bridge. But knowing his mum wasn’t responsible for her actions and wanting to protect her, Adam confessed to the crime himself.

Stepdad Cain Dingle helped Adam escape the country in the back of a van. He is currently thought to still be on the run in France.

But if Adam’s keen, the fans are keen and we’re keen, surely Emmerdale can find a way to make a return happen? Stranger things have happened in Soapland!
