Did Aaron really kill Anthony in Emmerdale? All the clues he’s not the killer – and who is

Tonight’s episode of Emmerdale seemed to indicate that Aaron Dingle had killed Anthony. This came after Aaron confronted Anthony, demanding answers over his abuse of Ruby. Faced with Aaron’s demands that he hand himself in to the police, Anthony decided to poke the bear instead – rather be punched to death than die behind bars as a rapist, right?

Aaron walked away at the last minute, but the damage was done…. and John and Aaron returned to the scene of the crime to find Anthony lying there dead. But did Aaron really kill him?

Did Aaron kill Anthony on Emmerdale?

While Anthony’s murder might seem like a cut-and-dry case of death by Dingle, something doesn’t quite add up to us. Aaron gave the old man quite the pasting, but was it enough to kill him?

While Aaron’s claiming culpability for his death, there’s plenty of room for another to have snuck in after he left and finished the job. And, with multiple parties acting strangely as the episode ended, the mystery is far from over.

Here’s our pick of who might have really killed Anthony.

    Ruby made an odd comment

As the episode ended, Steph finally opened up to Ruby – although she stopped short of revealing what her dad had done to her. As the two women settled their differences with hug, Ruby assured her daughter that there was ‘nothing’ she wouldn’t do to protect her daughter.

Nothing, eh – like killing predatory monster Anthony, for example?

    Caleb had unfinished business

As Anthony’s week from hell began, Caleb took his father-in-law aside for a chat and a game of Russian roulette. Caleb was set on killing Anthony until Cain arrived – allowing the old man to slip away.

And, as he arrived at the depot in the wake of Anthony’s beating, Caleb seemed surprised at how clean the place looked. Had he dipped back into the office to clean up his tracks?

John helped Aaron cover up his attack on Anthony in Emmerdale

With Aaron panicking in the aftermath of the attack, supportive boyfriend John was quick to step up and help cover up Anthony’s death. A little too quick, perhaps?

John leapt to action without hesitation, cleaning the crime scene and then disposing of the body (aside from one pesky tooth). Unflappable John seemed to take the whole thing in his stride, leading us to wonder whether he was the one who delivered the killing blow. A sneaky way to ingratiate himself with Aaron, maybe?

Cain’s got some making up to do

Interrupting his showdown with Anthony, Cain was there in his brother’s time of need. While slimy Anthony ultimately slipped away, Cain offered to help Caleb disappear his father-in-law properly.

And, later, he sidled up to Caleb reminding him that he’d always be there to provide an alibi or bit of support in his time of need. Could Cain have tried to ease a guilty conscience by murdering Anthony on Caleb’s behalf?

Laurel and Nicola panicked as Aaron confronted Anthony on Emmerdale

As John set about cleaning up Aaron’s mess, Nicola and Laurel were in a tizz over their attack on Anthony. While Laurel fretted at home, Nicola headed to the hospital to see whether he’d been admitted.

Anthony seemed to have taken the bash to the bonce like a champ, but could a delayed brain bleed taken effect, killing him after the fact?

    Steph was all smiles

Doting granddaughter Steph oscillated between being concerned for Anthony and – when not flirting with Ross again – feeling reconciliatory towards her mum. This was wildly out of character for Steph, who’s spent the last few weeks being nothing short of atrocious to poor Ruby.

Aware that her granddad was headed to the depo, could Steph have swung by just in time to hear his confession and foul words to Aaron? And, if so, did she sneak in to finish the old man off?

Emmerdale star Beth Cordingly reaches out to fans over Anthony actor Nicholas Day: ‘We all need a little bit of protection’

Emmerdale actress Beth Cordingly has reached out to fans on social media over Nicholas Day, the actor playing her dad, Anthony Fox.

Viewers know Anthony is a vile man who sexually abused Ruby when she was just 14. His rapes resulted in the birth of her daughter Steph when she was 16.

But in real life, Beth insists Nicholas is a “gem”.

Emmerdale star Beth Cordingly issues message to fans on social media over Anthony actor Nicholas Day

Writing on her Instagram page, Beth addressed her followers. She said: “In case anyone is under any illusions I just want to stress what a beautiful man Nick Day is, in real life. We were very lucky to have an actor of his calibre and talent playing my father, Anthony, in Emmerdale.”

The actress then continued: “It wasn’t an easy role for anyone to take on and he found playing this person extremely challenging.

“I loved working with Nick, we all did. It was an emotional experience requiring a lot of trust and a lot of love. He’s a gem.”

The Ruby Fox-Miligan star urged her followers to be kind. “If you see him in the street please remember he’s NOT Anthony. I’m sure you all will – so forgive me for sounding patronising – I just wanted to say. Sometimes, as actors, we need a little bit of protection when we put ourselves out there telling difficult stories that need to be told.”

Fans and other co-stars were quick to agree with Beth, with Amy Walsh (Tracy Robinson) commenting: “Ah, what a gent! I had the honour of a couple of scenes with him! Lovely man.”

A fan wrote: “He really did play his part well, right down to the crazed look in his eyes in some scenes, I’d love to see him in a Shakespeare play, think he’d be awesome in one.”

“If an actor is really hated you know they’ve played a blinder… it’s a very powerful storyline which made my skin crawl…. He’s fantastic! I hope people remember he’s only acting the part… you both deserve an award,” agreed another one.

One more added: “So nice of you to say this. I echo what many have said. I hated Anthony, he made my skin crawl. Proving what a fantastic and brave actor Nick Day is, it can’t be easy to play a character like this. Another hard hitting storyline done well by Emmerdale.”

Praise for Emmerdale’s Beth Cordingly and Nicholas Day

In fact, both Beth and Nicholas have come in for huge praise during this hard-hitting storyline. Nicholas has created one of the most vile villains ever to grace our screens.

And the scenes in which Ruby confronted her dad left fans in no doubt what a star Beth is.

One fan wrote: “Beth Cordingly is a phenomenal talent. ITV are so lucky to have her as Ruby!”

Another praised: “Beth Cordingly is award-worthy on Emmerdale this week. May Ruby remain at the centre of the show forever.”

“Give Beth Cordingly all of the awards. This is a very dark, dark storyline, even for a soap. And she has been amazing,” another fan commented.

  • Who should Anthony’s killer be? Why some fans are desperate for it to be Steph

Who should Anthony’s killer be? Why some fans are desperate for it to be Steph

It’s been a long time coming – and tonight’s episode of Emmerdale will reveal who is Anthony Fox‘s killer. And there’s a long-line up of potential suspects, from vengeful son-in-law Caleb, to traumatised daughter Ruby and even Aaron Dingle, who suffered similar trauma himself. Meanwhile, a portion of the fanbase are hoping that it might be Steph who delivers the killing blow… or bullet.

Steph has been her grandfather’s most staunch defender, no matter the detriment to her poor mum’s mental health. Since arriving in the village, she’s pushed for Ruby to make nice with Anthony, unaware of the real reason for Ruby’s hurt.

Last night’s episode (Wednesday, January 22) saw Anthony squirm out of trouble as Caleb confronted him with a gun, scarpering as Cain arrived on the scene. He was then cornered by Aaron Dingle, and the outlook isn’t good.

With Anthony’s body set to be found tonight, he’s not long for the world. But who will kill Anthony? Could it be Steph?

Steph should be Anthony Fox’s killer, Emmerdale fans demand

Sharing a wish-list of potential killers, a number of viewers insisted that Steph should be the one to kill Anthony – reasoning that it would make more sense than rumoured culprit Aaron.

“Personally I would prefer to see Steph as the killer. I don’t think Aaron has it in him especially after Robert,” wrote one fan.

“If Steph isn’t the one to shoot Anthony, then what is the point?” asked another.

Meanwhile, a third suggested that the emotion Anthony’s potential confession might evoke in Steph could be ‘nuclear.’ Might Steph overhear talk of Anthony’s crimes and kill her grandfather?

“Don’t forget Anthony dialled Steph’s mobile number from one of the depot’s office phones. He didn’t actually end that call. Aaron came in and said about having a chat. If the call connected, Steph heard the whole vile truth. The emotion that’d evoke in her. Nuclear,”

“I think Steph should kill him!” another wrote.

Emmerdale spoilers tonight: Anthony’s body is found

In Emmerdale spoilers tonight (Thursday, January 23), Anthony’s dead body is found. But who killed him?

And, as they worry about being held responsible for Anthony’s disappearance, a panicking Laurel and Nicola try to track him down – unaware that he’s already dead.

What happened in Emmerdale last night?

After a game of Russian Roulette with Caleb on Wednesday January 22, Anthony inexplicably managed to run away from his gun-wielding son-in-law. Cain talked Caleb out of going after him and Anthony limped his way to the depot hoping to find Steph.

But she wasn’t there and the place was in darkness due to an electrical fault. Anthony let himself in and tried to use the office phone to call his granddaughter. Only Aaron Dingle was there waiting for him.

He menacingly told Anthony he wanted them to have a little chat.

    Anthony killed in Emmerdale spoilers

For the first time all week, Anthony seemed genuinely scared when confronted by Aaron. After Anthony finally confessed what he did, Aaron beat him a little, but then told him they were going to the police instead.

However Anthony made crass remarks about both Ruby’s willingness and Aaron’s relationship with his dad, Gordon. It sent Aaron over the edge and he violently lashed out, unable to control himself.

He left Anthony battered on the floor, missing a tooth, but still alive.

Aaron then went home, confessed to John what he did, who insisted they had to go and help Anthony. But when they got there, Anthony was dead. John dealt with the situation as distraught Aaron couldn’t believe he’d become a murderer. But has he?

Speculation over Anthony’s killer in Emmerdale

Fans online who have already watched the ITVX early release episode aren’t so sure all is as it seems. There was a lot of time between Aaron leaving Anthony alive and going back to find him dead.

“Someone got to Anthony in the depot after Aaron left him there,” said one on social media.

Another agreed (cryptically!): “I don’t buy it with a certain character…Someone else got there first before they went back too a certain place.”

“So… I don’t think the killer is the killer… we didn’t actually see him kill Anthony,” added a third.

  • Emmerdale star Danny Miller on Aaron’s desperation to punish Anthony: ‘The motive is there in plain sight’

Emmerdale star Danny Miller on Aaron’s desperation to punish Anthony: ‘The motive is there in plain sight’

Emmerdale cast member Danny Miller has opened up about why Aaron could be driven to murder as Anthony is killed in the show.

Aaron Dingle has suffered a lot over the years. Now it seems his past is catching up with him. And the thought of anyone suffering the same abuse he did as a child is too much for him to bear.

Emmerdale cast member Danny Miller has revealed just what Aaron’s motives would be for killing Anthony, and whether he thinks Aaron is actually capable of murder.

Emmerdale cast star Danny Miller on Aaron’s realisation

Back in 2016, Emmerdale embarked on a heartbreaking storyline for fan-favourite Aaron when they brought his dad back. After keeping it in for so long, Aaron finally confided in Robert Sugden about the sexual abuse he faced growing up.

What followed was a long and emotional journey where Aaron, with the support of the rest of his family, faced his disgusting dad in court. And thankfully, Gordon got sent down. But, his time in prison wasn’t long, as he ended up taking his own life shortly after the sentencing. Leaving Aaron with even more emotions to deal with.

Now, as Aaron has just realised the truth of what’s happened between Ruby and vile Anthony, he sees red. And wants to get revenge.

Danny Miller explained that while Aaron wasn’t aware of the situation before now, he has ‘always been wary of Anthony.’ And that could be down to ‘an instinct from experience.’

When Aaron spotted the altercation between Ruby and Anthony, he knew deep down what was going on.

Danny added: “He knows the difference of scared looks from his experience. And that’s exactly what he sees in Ruby – he sees himself.”

Aaron is worried and angry in Emmerdale

    Could Aaron kill Anthony?

As soon as Aaron realises, Danny explains he is ‘instantly aggressive and destined for revenge.’ Not only does he see it as a chance to defend Ruby, but it’s also ‘his chance to level with Gordon. Who took the ‘coward’s way out’ as Aaron calls it.’

The revelation obviously brings back horrific times for Aaron, and Danny knows his character would worry about how to cope.

He said: “It’s pure disgust and dread as to how he’ll deal with this. And it brings back so many evil and dark memories for Aaron that he had suppressed for many years.”

We know Anthony ends up dead, so could Aaron kill him? Danny seems to think there’s plenty of reasons why he would.

“Having experienced the same abuse and disgusting acts, he never got the justice he deserved or that Gordon deserved. The motive is there in plain sight,” Danny commented.

  • What happened in Emmerdale tonight: Caleb held unrepentant Anthony at gunpoint – and someone got shot

What happened in Emmerdale tonight: Caleb held unrepentant Anthony at gunpoint – and someone got shot

Emmerdale tonight saw Caleb play a very dangerous game of Russian Roulette with Anthony. The gun was fired, but who got shot?

Meanwhile, Dawn couldn’t keep away from Joe and the pair ended up kissing again.

Here’s everything that happened in Emmerdale tonight, Tuesday January 21.

Caleb held Anthony at gunpoint in Emmerdale tonight

Caleb got to the truth – all of it

Caleb drove Anthony to a barn on Moira’s farm and ordered him out of the car at gun point. Anthony brazened it out as Caleb held the gun on him and told him to tell the truth.

He tried to make out Ruby was lying, but Caleb wasn’t budging, he wanted the truth.

Although Anthony did convince him to put the gun down, Caleb still wouldn’t listen as Anthony protested it was all in Ruby’s head. Caleb then played Russian Roulette – one bullet in the gun, six chambers. The first shot was empty.

Anthony hit back that Caleb just didn’t understand family life as he was brought up in a care home. Shots two, three and four were fired and empty too.

As it came down to 50-50, Anthony started to admit what he did. And he continued to try to talk his way into saving his life. But then he started talking about how Ruby used to flaunt herself and it was all her fault causing Caleb to shoot. That one was empty too, meaning it had to be the next one.

Except it wasn’t, because Caleb had taken all the bullets out, just wanting Anthony to feel the terror Ruby had.

Anthony then played his trump card and told Caleb Ruby had been sleeping with Cain…

    Steph went for Ruby

Meanwhile Steph was getting worried as to why her grandad hadn’t turned up to meet her. She once again attacked Ruby over it – whinged that her mum wished she’d never been born and stormed off again.

When will Steph actually act her age and question exactly why her mum looks so traumatised? Can’t she stop behaving like a spoilt brat for five minutes?

    A shot was fired

Elsewhere Cain went to visit Ruby and revealed he knew the truth about Anthony. He stepped up to support Ruby and insisted he would stop Caleb doing anything stupid.

As he searched the village for them, Aaron approached, wanting to know exactly what was going on.

Back at the barn, Cain had tracked them down and was outside when he heard a gunshot. Inside, Anthony had made a lunge for the gun, but were either of them hurt?

Dawn gave in to Joe in Emmerdale tonight

Joe presented Dawn with a laptop, but Dawn told him she wasn’t going to work with him and he could stick his job. He seemed unfazed and told her to give him a week. He gave Dawn some work to do and she smashed it, leaving Kim impressed. But then Kim confirmed Joe had been behind her hiring and Dawn was cross.

Dawn burst into his room as he was changing to confront him. But he used the opportunity to seduce her and she did not fight him off. Well, you wouldn’t, would you?!

    Also in Emmerdale tonight…

    Laurel panicked

Laurel was still in panic mode, despite Nicola’s reassurance that she did nothing wrong and all she did was try to save her. Honestly, if we’re about to have weeks of Laurel wittering on about her guilt, we’re not here for it.

Later, Laurel tried to tell the police, but Nicola convinced her not to. She laid into Nicola and continued to witter on and on.

    The lights went out…

At the depot the lights are out which cleared the whole place (conveniently for later in the week we suspect).

  • Nicholas Day – Emmerdale’s best ever villainous actor at the centre of the Anthony Fox murder mystery

Nicholas Day – Emmerdale’s best ever villainous actor at the centre of the Anthony Fox murder mystery

Emmerdale has had some villains in its time and Anthony Fox, played by actor Nicholas Day is right up there with the best/worst of them. In fact, he may have created the most vile, disgusting and difficult-to-watch character ever, which is no mean feat given the other baddies the show has produced.

We really thought Tom King was the lowest of the low, but in fact we were wrong. Anthony beats him 10 times over – and that’s all credit to Nicholas Day for such a chilling performance.

    Anthony and Steph in Emmerdale
From the moment he arrived we were unsure about Anthony (Credit: ITV)

Nicholas Day as Anthony Fox in Emmerdale

Although actor Nicholas Day has had a long and varied career both on stage and screen, he was relatively unknown to the Emmerdale audience when he arrived in the Dales. A part in the Crown and roles in Murder Maps, The Wolfman and The Lakes were perhaps his best-known roles.

But now he will forever be etched in our brains as horrid Anthony Fox.

Anthony came to Emmerdale to reunite with estranged daughter Ruby Fox-Miligan last year. He arrived alongside granddaughter, Steph Miligan

Ruby and Caleb were desperate to reunite with Steph, but she made it very clear Anthony came as part of the package. Given she hadn’t spoken to her dad for 30 years, Ruby found this difficult to swallow.

The official story is that Anthony and Ruby’s mum, Helen, threw Ruby out when she fell pregnant at 16. They gave her a choice between keeping her baby or staying at home and she chose Caleb and the baby.

Since his return, Anthony has spent months pretending to Ruby he’s sorry and gaslighting her into thinking she was the problem.

As everyone around her urged her to give her dad another chance, especially as he has terminal prostate cancer, Ruby stood firm. It came to the point where even husband Caleb urged her to let it go.

But while no one in the village could see the hell Ruby was going through, viewers certainly could – and they were proved right when flashbacks revealed Anthony had sexually abused Ruby and it started when she was just 14.

A rape on her 16th birthday had – horrifyingly – resulted in the birth of Steph. Anthony is Steph’s real father.

He's charming, kind and generous - but not behind the scenes (Credit: ITV)

So what makes Nicholas Day such a good villain?

The entire time Anthony has been in the village, he has charmed the pants off everyone around him. Even Caleb, who knows him of old, was won over by his father-in-law.

Anthony has painted this perfect persona of kind and generous. He donated £5000 to the April search fund and has even been helping half the village kids with their homework.

But behind closed doors, he has been blackmailing Ruby over her fling with Cain. He has made vile comments and veiled threats towards her. His mere presence has been making her feel physically sick, let alone when he tries to touch her.

Villains don’t have to be murderous or out there, the ones that have us believe they are something else are far more terrifying. Take Meena Jutla for example: she was always a bit out there, crazy and unpredictable. Whereas Anthony comes across as just a kindly old man – something he is not.

Fans love to hate Nicholas Day as Anthony in Emmerdale

The mark of a good villain is what the viewers think. Soap fans are a hard bunch to please and the overwhelming consensus is Nicholas Day is a brilliant actor.

“The actor playing Anthony is such a credit to his art, aren’t we all totally repulsed by him? Superb,” said one on social media.

Another added: “Gutted Nicholas Day will be leaving despite what the storyline is about; Anthony the abusive father of Ruby will be happy when he’s gone, but well done Nicholas an incredible part.”

“He has played Anthony brilliantly, hats off to him great acting to play a part like that, can’t be easy,” said a third. A fourth then agreed: “I feel so sorry for Nicholas Day – he’s playing the part so well that he’s probably getting women walloping him with bags of potato waffles in Iceland.”

A further commenter has said: “In storylines like this the person playing the hated character gets overlooked. Nicholas Day is a fantastic actor. The character he portrays makes my skin crawl, which is a sure indication an actor is doing a good job!”

“The actor playing her dad is brilliant too. He makes my skin crawl,” added one more.

Emmerdale spoilers: Anthony to shoot himself in huge whodunnit twist? Fan theory explored

This week sparks the end of Anthony Fox in Emmerdale as he is killed off as part of a big whodunnit story. But a new fan theory has predicted that Anthony will end his own life.

Anthony arrived in the village a few months ago and viewers quickly discovered that he had abused his daughter Ruby when she was young.

While there are many people in the village, including Ruby Fox-Miligan herself, who’d like to see Anthony dead, viewers are predicting a huge twist.

Shortly after Anthony arrived in the Dales, a special flashback episode revealed that Anthony had sexually abused Ruby when she was a child.

In the flashback scene, a young Ruby was seen celebrating her 16th birthday. Her father then approached her in her bedroom, while Ruby begged “not again, not today.”

Ruby had kept the secret for over 30 years, but last week she bravely confronted her father over what he had put her through. She also ordered a DNA test, which horrifically revealed that Anthony is Steph Miligan’s real father.

Chas and Caleb soon figured out the truth and news started to spread around the village about Anthony’s history. After Caleb ordered Anthony to get into his car, a flash forward scene showed a bloodied Anthony dead on the floor.

Caleb threatens Anthony with a gun, and Ruby, Chas, Cain, Aaron, Laurel and Nicola also all have motive, but will any of them kill Anthony?

    New whodunnit fan theory

Emmerdale fans have suggested that the culprit could be Anthony himself.

Taking to X, a fan wrote: “Money on Anthony being that out of it after all the batterings, he gets the gun, fumbles and shoots himself. All major characters survive a jail sentence.”

Another fan had a similar idea, writing: “I think Anthony tries to grab the gun and it goes off.”

A third fan wrote: “Caleb hands the gun to Anthony and tells him to do the right thing.”

    Fans predict a twist

An exclusive poll for Emmerdale Insider has revealed that 62% of fans believe Emmerdale is tricking us and the culprit won’t be any of the main suspects.

Many believe Steph Miligan will be the killer. “The granddaughter will hear them and she will kill him,” wrote one viewer, while another agreed, writing: “I think Steph overhears what’s happening and pulls the trigger.” A third fan said: “Maybe Steph shoots him, plot twist.”

Other fans have a theory that Anthony will take his own life. One fan predicted: “Caleb hands the gun to Anthony and tells him to do the right thing.”

While some viewers even believes Anthony’s death will be an accident. One fan wrote on Instagram: “He will slip, trip and fall, he [Caleb] won’t shoot him.” Another fan added: “He might just collapse from his head injury?”
