Ruby’s brilliant, Kim is BACK and did Aaron really kill Anthony? We’re not sure! It’s been quite the week in Emmerdale

It’s still all about Ruby in our Emmerdale review this week, though now lots of other people have got involved in her heartbreaking story which is a bit distracting and slightly annoying.

But overall there was a lot to love in this week’s Emmerdale. Here’s what we thought in our Emmerdale review.

Ruby in Emmerdale is tearful and distraught (Credit: ITV/Comp Emmerdale Insider)
Ruby – played by Beth Cordingly – is brilliant (Credit: ITV/Comp Emmerdale Insider)

    Ruby continues to be brilliant

Yes, the focus wasn’t always on Ruby this week but we still think she’s absolutely brilliant and a fabulous addition to Emmerdale. We love when characters are allowed to settle into a soap before they’re given a huge storyline. Us getting to know Ruby before this bombshell landed really paid off while Ella’s story never really hit the spot.

Ruby and Cain kiss in the garage
We really wish this hadn’t happened (Credit: ITV)

Cain and Ruby is a complication too far

But saying all that, we still really wish the Cain and Ruby thing hadn’t happened. It’s just an additional complication this storyline doesn’t need.

Ruby being abused by her dad would have been enough. Now there’s the fact of him being Steph’s dad. AND his mysterious death in the mix, too. Cain and Ruby seemed unnecessary at the time and now seems even more of a blind alley.

Laurel and Nicola is a bit weird

Anyway, now Anthony’s dead, and Laurel and Nicola are agonising over whether they played a part in his disappearance.

Nicola even made the effort to go to a random ward in Hotton General and ask questions – most people would have just given them a ring, Nico. And then what do you know? Steph went to the SAME hospital and asked the same questions of the same nurse. What are the chances, eh? That nurse clearly isn’t working hard enough if she’s got time to hang around and wait to be asked questions about old men.

But we digress. Laurel and Nicola’s part in the Anthony death drama is a bit odd and feels slightly stuck on. They’re flailing round the village panicking about going to prison and it feels like a distraction. But we did laugh when Laurel said Nicola would handle prison better than she would. She’s right!

    Emmerdale review: Caleb’s useless

Caleb continues to be the worst husband, having made the whole thing about himself and left poor Ruby at home, desperately worried about Steph. Caleb played a weird game of Russian roulette with Anthony, trying to get him to confess – even though he knew the whole story from Ruby. And then the gun went off, and Anthony scarpered.

    Slow hand clap, Caleb.

Anthony was punched to the ground by an angry Aaron (Credit: ITV)

But Aaron had us in bits

We love when we get a glimpse of vulnerable Aaron and his confrontation with Anthony was so good but very grim. Also, can we just point out that Aaron – Ruby’s neighbour – had clocked how she acted round her dad but her actual husband and daughter had not. Tsk.

Anyway, Aaron forcing the truth from Anthony was a hard watch. Aaron was clearly reliving his own trauma. While Anthony revealed his true, awful, despicable colours alternating between sickening self pity, and disgusting bravado. Nicholas Day – who plays the evil abuser – has done SUCH a good job of creating a monster. What a fabulous actor he is.

And then Aaron pummelled Anthony to a pulp. We weren’t even sorry.

    But did he kill him?

Did Aaron really kill Anthony? (Credit: ITV)
Aaron thinks he did it, but we don’t! (Credit: ITV)

Emmerdale review: We don’t think Aaron did it

We are pretty sure Aaron is not the killer. (Mind you, we were absolutely sure that Nate had been killed in the barn fire so we’re not always right!)

Obviously, Aaron thinks he’s the killer and we’re supposed to think he’s the killer, but is he, though? We’re not sure.

Ruby was making some fairly suspicious faces when anyone mentioned her dad – though that could just be her worries about Steph.

And speaking of Steph, could she have been the one to kill Anthony? What if she overheard his grim confession to Aaron? Her desperate hunt for him makes a lot of sense if she came back to deal with the body only to find it gone!

Or maybe it was Jai. Yes of course that’s ridiculous, but he’s got a dark side! And he needs something to do…

Superhero John saved Aaron's skin (Credit: ITV)
John was extremely calm in this crisis (Credit: ITV)

We’re still intrigued by John in our Emmerdale review

Speaking of dealing with dead bodies, how calm was John when confronted by Aaron’s dastardly deed? He simply picked up his keys and headed off to sort it out.

We don’t care how many years he spent in the army – surely no one with a normal backstory is that chill about getting rid of a corpse? There’s definitely a lot we don’t know about Mr Sugden. Could he even have killed Anthony himself? What if he’s the latest Dales serial killer?!

Dawn finds Joe out cold in his car

    WHAT is wrong with Joe?

Another intrigue this week is Joe’s extreme health issues. Does he need something from Noah? A kidney? Bone marrow? Something else?! Or is he really an addict like Dawn thinks?

Anyway we want to know what he’s up to and we are not the only ones because…

Kim's laptop screen as she listens to Joe's conversation
Kim’s listening into Joe’s conversations! (Credit: ITV)

    KIM IS BACK!

Of course she is! Grieving or not, we KNEW Kim wouldn’t be taking any nonsense from Mr Tate. She’s only gone and bugged his room! Now she knows he’s up to something. And she is surely about to twig what all those slurping noises were as he and Dawn snogged the faces of each other.

But who’s Joe talking to? What did he mean when he said the thing he didn’t want to happen had happened? Did he mean Dawn finding him out cold? And why doesn’t he want anyone to know he’s ill? We’re desperate to know more!

What happened in Emmerdale tonight: Aaron falling apart as Steph edged closer to the truth

In Emmerdale tonight Aaron couldn’t pretend everything was normal so John had to act. Can he keep it together and cover up the evidence?

Meanwhile, Laurel was also spiralling and Nicola struggled to contain her as Steph remained determined to get to the truth about Anthony’s disappearance.

Here’s what happened in Emmerdale tonight, Friday January 24.

John kicked struggling Aaron into touch in Emmerdale tonight

Aaron was out trying to run the guilt off himself. John was worried about where he was and Aaron tried to be glib and pretend he was fine. John later cornered Aaron at work wanting to know how he was feeling, but Aaron brushed him off.

John insisted they had to act normal and go to the pub to make it seem like everything was okay. And that’s where they heard Steph say Anthony’s car was behind the pub so he couldn’t have gone anywhere.

Elsewhere, Leyla revealed she’d seen Anthony with a head injury, so panicked Steph decided to organise a search party.

She went to the hospital and coincidentally asked the same nurse Nicola had seen if Anthony had been in. The nurse described a blonde woman also asking after Anthony, which made Steph assume Ruby had been there too and later confronted her mum.

Aaron was horrified to overhear their conversation and rushed out. John tried to calm him down, but Aaron spiralled and shouted there was no way he’d ever get away with this.

John yelled at him to calm him down. He told him they would deal with this together – move Anthony’s stuff and get rid of the car to make it look like he’d returned and left again.

“Get a grip,” he told Aaron. But can Aaron really hold it together?

Joe Tate continued to plot – but Kim’s on to him

Joe was on the phone to his mystery caller saying things weren’t good, he was tired and stressed – and Kim was listening in.

Meanwhile, Dawn was pouring coffee and was in a strop with Joe for blackmailing her. He claimed he’d reached out to someone about his problem and was getting help.

Noah was celebrating possibly winning a contract and being able to set up his own business. Joe overheard and swooped in with pictures of Dubai, wanting Noah’s help with the electricals over there.

He then went home and found Dawn, seducing her into kissing him again. Kim was listening in, but as they were in the nursery, she couldn’t hear them. This time.

Dawn pushed Joe off and told him to leave her alone. But she isn’t going to resist his charms for long.

The walls closed in on Laurel in Emmerdale tonight

Laurel was trying to pray her guilt away. But it didn’t really help.

Nicola fished for info on Anthony from Steph and worried he still hadn’t turned up.

Back at home, Laurel was wittering on again about how scared she was. Nicola was getting fed up of her (she’s not the only one) and told her Anthony had walked away alive, so it wasn’t their fault. But will Laurel stop spiralling?

  • Emmerdale killing off Anthony in murder plot was the wrong move – here’s why

Emmerdale killing off Anthony in murder plot was the wrong move – here’s why

Anthony Fox has just been written off in Emmerdale as part of a murder plot – and it looks like Aaron killed him. But, here’s why we think it was the wrong decision.

Last night’s scenes (Thursday, January 23) saw Aaron attack Anthony in the Depot. John then later returned to the site of the crime scene and confirmed that Anthony was dead.

But, as Ruby’s abuser’s life ends, we’re not so happy with the decision to kill him off.

Anthony was stunned to see Aaron there (Credit: ITV)

    Anthony Fox’s murder in Emmerdale

Stumbling around the Dales after suffering a blow to the head by Laurel and after having legged it from Caleb (who was threatening him with a gun), Anthony ended up in the Depot.

He was then cornered by Aaron – who was definitely not a friendly face. Aaron knew what Anthony had done to Ruby, being reminded of what his own evil father Gordon did to him when he was younger.

Aaron never felt as though justice had been served after Gordon ended his own life in prison. He then vowed to let Anthony live so that he could go to prison instead of getting the easy way out. And, like Aaron, we would’ve liked to see Anthony end up behind bars too.

But, fair enough, Aaron’s anger got the better of him when Anthony had the nerve to say that both he and Ruby ‘asked’ for their abuse. What an evil thing to say.

Aaron then punched and punched Anthony until he was bleeding out and had lost a tooth. He then scarpered and told John that he might’ve killed Anthony.

John and Aaron then teamed up (our new fave criminal double act) and realised that Anthony was dead. John then wrapped his body up and shoved him in the van, cleaning everything so that nothing would be traced back to Aaron. The things John does for love…

Opinion: Emmerdale shouldn’t have killed of Anthony

Whilst we really wanted to see Ruby’s abusive father Anthony be punished for his horrendous and absolutely sickening treatment of his daughter, we didn’t want it to end this way.

In soap, there seems to be a troubling pattern of abusers meeting their death instead of going through the justice system and ending up in prison. And, it leaves us feeling a tad too uncomfortable.

Knowing that Anthony was finally paying for his crimes behind bars would’ve given Ruby some sense of justice, knowing that he was going to die inside. But instead, Anthony’s dead. And, he died in the Depot.

The thing is… Anthony had almost accepted his death. He had terminal cancer and was going to die really soon anyway. This means that death wouldn’t be a punishment for what he did. It made no difference, other than the fact that he was robbed of a few extra months at best.

But, watching him spend his last few months in prison, and pay to some extent for what he made poor Ruby go through would’ve been the best way to end his story. And, it would’ve portrayed a much greater message, giving victims hope that justice will prevail in the end rather them or their loved ones having to sadly take matters into their own hands.

Near the end of last year, we saw Tom King get sentenced for his abuse of Belle. Ruby deserved similar justice. Sadly, she was robbed of this chance. And, it just doesn’t sit right with us.

  • ‘Serial killer’ John murdered Anthony and Nate, and now fans fear for Aaron – Emmerdale fan theory explored

‘Serial killer’ John murdered Anthony and Nate, and now fans fear for Aaron – Emmerdale fan theory explored

Fans have grown concerned about Aaron in Emmerdale as he has now become reliant on John. And they’re convinced more than ever that he has a deadly secret.

Ever since John Sugden appeared in the Emmerdale village, fans haven’t been able to warm to him. Every so often he does or says something that just makes him seem a bit off.

And last night, he was suspiciously good at covering up Anthony’s death – almost like he has had some practice.. That didn’t go unnoticed by fans. With many thinking he may have even had something to do with his death, so that Aaron would have a reason to need him.

Should we worry for Aaron in Emmerdale?

As soon as Aaron told John what happened, John seemed to switch straight into protective boyfriend mode. Which would have been cute – if we didn’t have our trust issues with him.

And fans all agree that there has to be more to come in Aaron and John’s story. Some think Anthony may not have been his first murder. Remember Nate? His exit still seems very suspicious.

One wrote:  “What would John do to Aaron if he turned on him? He has the power now to destroy Aaron’s life. What would he do if Aaron broke up with him? And if Robert ever returns, Aaron has welded himself to John. What a conundrum it would be.”

Another added: “When people say John and Aaron were cute today but it’s so obvious that John is not what he seems. Open your eyes.”

A third theorised: “Always thought the way Nate just left was iffy. And there is something about John that had me thinking he maybe killed him. And now tonight I deffo think he finished Anthony off. He knows it wasn’t Aaron.”

    John looks sad in Emmerdale
Fans think John has covered up murders before (Credit: ITV)

    Is John a serial killer?

It’s not just the Nate and Anthony theories that have fans convinced John is hiding something. It’s also the mysterious Aidan Moore.

While he told Aaron that Aidan was someone he loved but couldn’t save in Afghanistan, fans immediately thought he was lying. And while some thought he actually is Aidan Moore. A viewer gave a different suggestion.

They wrote: “So this Aidan Moore. I think John may have had something to do with his death. He was way too calm about covering up Anthony’s death. So how did he do it so easily?”

As Aaron in Emmerdale panics about now being a murderer, just how many twists are set to play out in their new storyline? And do you think fans are right to worry for Aaron’s safety?

  • Where is Nicholas Day now? Anthony actor has left Emmerdale and returned to the stage

Where is Nicholas Day now? Anthony actor has left Emmerdale and returned to the stage

Last night’s episode of Emmerdale saw Anthony killed in retribution for his abuse of daughter Ruby – marking an exit from the soap for actor Nicholas Day.

Anthony copped a vicious beating after provoking Aaron Dingle, his abuse of Ruby bringing back some painful memories for the young mechanic. Deciding he’d rather be dead than behind bars, Anthony’s venom scored him a brutal beating, leaving him broken and bleeding on the floor of the depot.

Returning to the scene of the crime, Aaron and John found that Anthony had died in the interim, leaving Aaron holding the bag, and with a body to clean up for John. Anthony’s story is far from done, but Nicholas Day’s time in the soap seems done.

    But where is Nicholas now?

Where is Emmerdale actor Nicholas Day, following Anthony exit?

Nicholas is currently starring in the play A Man For All Seasons, alongside George Gently star Martin Shaw. The show is currently playing at Theatre Royal Bath until January 25, before touring in Chichester, Malvern, Cheltenham, Oxford, Guildford, Canterbury, and London Richmond.

This new version of Robert Bolt’s play tracks the fallout as Henry VIII demands a divorce from wife Catherine of Aaragon (divorced) so that he can move on to new girl Anne Boleyn (beheaded) – putting the devout Thomas More (Martin Shaw) in a compromising situation.

Now-former Anthony Fox star Nicholas plays Cardinal Wolsey – clashing with the King after failing to deliver his divorce.

Beth Cordingly issues plea to fans following Anthony exit

Meanwhile, screen daughter Beth Cordingly has reached out to fans following Nicholas’s exit from the soap, describing the star as a ‘gem.’

Writing on her Instagram page yesterday, Beth wrote: “In case anyone is under any illusions I just want to stress what a beautiful man Nick Day is, in real life. We were very lucky to have an actor of his calibre and talent playing my father, Anthony, in Emmerdale.”

She continued: “It wasn’t an easy role for anyone to take on and he found playing this person extremely challenging. I loved working with Nick, we all did. It was an emotional experience requiring a lot of trust and a lot of love. He’s a gem.”

She finished with a plea for viewers to be kind… and not mistake fiction for reality. “If you see him in the street please remember he’s NOT Anthony. I’m sure you all will – so forgive me for sounding patronising – I just wanted to say. Sometimes, as actors, we need a little bit of protection when we put ourselves out there telling difficult stories that need to be told.”

  • Ruby ‘killed her dad and Caleb covered it up’ – all the clues they were behind Anthony’s death in Emmerdale

Ruby ‘killed her dad and Caleb covered it up’ – all the clues they were behind Anthony’s death in Emmerdale

In Emmerdale Anthony’s murder has been taking centre stage this week after Ruby confronted her dad over his abuse last week. And while last night showed what happened, many think it wasn’t the full story.

In last night’s episode, Aaron went to the Depot to confront Anthony. And it got ugly. After Aaron opened up on his own experiences, the vile man not only admitted what had happened, but disgustingly goaded him into beating him up.

However, Aaron stopped himself while Anthony was still alive. And while he tried to make Aaron kill him, the Dingle bad boy chose to walk away. But when he and John returned later, Anthony was dead.

    Emmerdale Anthony murder

Aaron immediately panicked at the thought of going to prison, but John stepped in to cover up Anthony’s murder.

However, we didn’t actually see Anthony die. And that usually means something in Soapland. Now, fans seem to think they have cracked the case.

There was plenty of time between Aaron telling John what happened to them heading there together. Enough time for someone to actually kill Anthony.

Fans couldn’t help but notice Ruby’s behaviour switch during that time. She went out looking for Steph and returned even more shaken than before.

Then when Caleb headed to the Depot, he looked genuinely surprised to see it empty.

Fans took to social media to share their theories. And believe that Ruby was the culprit and Caleb was covering for her.

Rubly looking sad and worried in Emmerdale

Did Ruby kill her dad in Emmerdale?

One wrote: “My money is on Ruby. The gun was in her house and Caleb had told her it was untraceable. She was very calm talking to Steph. As if she knows Anthony is not coming back and Steph is safe out of his hands.”

Another added: “Caleb going into the Depot with his eyes searching the floor like he was expecting to see something. He had gone to clean up for Ruby hadn’t he?”

“So, did Ruby go up to the Depot and finish off her dad? She looked a bit suspicious when she came back. And she seemed genuinely surprised when Caleb came back and didn’t say anything.”

But now, Aaron is under the impression that he is a murderer, so the question is – is he? Or was it actually someone else?

If he isn’t responsible for the Emmerdale Anthony death, then there are currently a lot of people in the village who think they have something to do with it.

  • Anthony ‘still alive’ in Emmerdale, new fan theory predicts

Anthony ‘still alive’ in Emmerdale, new fan theory predicts

A new fan theory has predicted that resident Emmerdale monster Anthony Fox is still alive. His death last night (Thursday, January 23) seemed fairly definitive – being beaten to a pulp by Aaron and found dead when he and John returned to the scene of the crime.

Whether Aaron actually delivered the killing blow may be debatable, but he’s definitely dead… or is he?

What we do know is that John and Aaron returned to the depot, where army medic pronounced Anthony dead at the scene. After promising to clean up the mess, John sent Aaron on his merry way. He then set about disposing of the body and cleaning up the crime scene, like nothing had ever happened (one solitary tooth aside).

    But is Anthony really dead?

    John looks serious on Emmerdale
He’s dead – but we’ve only got John’s word for it (Credit: ITV)

Anthony is ‘still alive’ suggests Emmerdale fan

Writing on Reddit as last night’s episode aired, one fan wondered whether Anthony might have still been alive as John examined the body – and he then let him go after Aaron had scarpered.

“I think John let him go,” wrote one fan on a Reddit thread.

“I don’t think it was down to Aaron. Whenever there is an off screen death, there is a reason for it,” another said. Could that reason be that Anthony isn’t as dead as we think he is?

“Hard to imagine they would make Aaron a killer, though as it’s a soap they will likely allow him to think he killed Anthony for a while,” said a third.

Whatever the case may be, John’s behaviour was a little-too laid back, given the situation. “Sure John has done this before “in the army” 😉” winked one fan, hinting at ulterior motives for the still-mysterious Sugden brother.

What has John done with Anthony?

    Did Aaron really kill Anthony?

Regardless of whether he’s dead or not (and with John apparently hiding the body in the back of his van, we’re betting so), Aaron looks to be holding the bag.

However, Anthony was alive when Aaron left him – meaning that someone could have snuck in to finish off the job. Everyone last night was acting suspiciously, from a jittery Ruby to an uncharacteristically pleasant Steph.

Caleb, meanwhile, almost seemed surprised when he saw how clean the depot was – suggesting he could have stumbled across a beat-up Anthony earlier in the day. And then there’s John, who seemed far too cool and collected for the situation at hand.

In Emmerdale spoilers for tonight, the aftermath of Anthony’s murder brings consequences to all of those involved.

Steph gets more and more concerned over Anthony’s sudden disappearance and wants answers about his whereabouts.

But what she doesn’t realise is his bloody tooth still sits in the Depot…

    1. Laurel seeks guidance

The start of the week saw Laurel hit Anthony over the head with a candlestick in a bid to save Nicola, after she discovered he wasn’t trusted around kids.

Though he walked away – with a bad head injury – he was murdered by someone else and so he failed to turn back up.

Now as Laurel is convinced she is responsible for the vile man’s disappearance, she struggles to cope.

Knowing there could be only one place for her to go, Laurel turns to her religion and seeks guidance on what to do next.

    2. Steph’s suspicious

Steph may be the only person who cares about Anthony’s disappearance, but that’s purely because she doesn’t know the horrible truth.

However, she makes it her mission to find out who knows where he is. And so when she notices a tense atmosphere between Caleb and Ruby, she asks if they know anything.

What will their response be? And will Steph ever discover that Anthony is dead?

    3. Evidence hides in plain sight

Last night’s episode saw Aaron beat Anthony up and leave him. And when he returned, the man was dead.

Aaron may have had John’s help in clearing up any evidence of Anthony’s death, but the pair failed to notice something that could get them caught.

Anthony’s very bloody tooth still lays on the floor in the Depot, waiting to be discovered.

With people in and out of there all the time, will anyone notice it? And if so, who will it be?

  • Did Aaron really kill Anthony in Emmerdale? All the clues he’s not the killer – and who is

Did Aaron really kill Anthony in Emmerdale? All the clues he’s not the killer – and who is

Tonight’s episode of Emmerdale seemed to indicate that Aaron Dingle had killed Anthony. This came after Aaron confronted Anthony, demanding answers over his abuse of Ruby. Faced with Aaron’s demands that he hand himself in to the police, Anthony decided to poke the bear instead – rather be punched to death than die behind bars as a rapist, right?

Aaron walked away at the last minute, but the damage was done…. and John and Aaron returned to the scene of the crime to find Anthony lying there dead. But did Aaron really kill him?

Did Aaron kill Anthony on Emmerdale?

While Anthony’s murder might seem like a cut-and-dry case of death by Dingle, something doesn’t quite add up to us. Aaron gave the old man quite the pasting, but was it enough to kill him?

While Aaron’s claiming culpability for his death, there’s plenty of room for another to have snuck in after he left and finished the job. And, with multiple parties acting strangely as the episode ended, the mystery is far from over.

Here’s our pick of who might have really killed Anthony.

    Ruby made an odd comment

As the episode ended, Steph finally opened up to Ruby – although she stopped short of revealing what her dad had done to her. As the two women settled their differences with hug, Ruby assured her daughter that there was ‘nothing’ she wouldn’t do to protect her daughter.

Nothing, eh – like killing predatory monster Anthony, for example?

    Caleb had unfinished business

As Anthony’s week from hell began, Caleb took his father-in-law aside for a chat and a game of Russian roulette. Caleb was set on killing Anthony until Cain arrived – allowing the old man to slip away.

And, as he arrived at the depot in the wake of Anthony’s beating, Caleb seemed surprised at how clean the place looked. Had he dipped back into the office to clean up his tracks?

John helped Aaron cover up his attack on Anthony in Emmerdale

With Aaron panicking in the aftermath of the attack, supportive boyfriend John was quick to step up and help cover up Anthony’s death. A little too quick, perhaps?

John leapt to action without hesitation, cleaning the crime scene and then disposing of the body (aside from one pesky tooth). Unflappable John seemed to take the whole thing in his stride, leading us to wonder whether he was the one who delivered the killing blow. A sneaky way to ingratiate himself with Aaron, maybe?

Cain’s got some making up to do

Interrupting his showdown with Anthony, Cain was there in his brother’s time of need. While slimy Anthony ultimately slipped away, Cain offered to help Caleb disappear his father-in-law properly.

And, later, he sidled up to Caleb reminding him that he’d always be there to provide an alibi or bit of support in his time of need. Could Cain have tried to ease a guilty conscience by murdering Anthony on Caleb’s behalf?

Laurel and Nicola panicked as Aaron confronted Anthony on Emmerdale

As John set about cleaning up Aaron’s mess, Nicola and Laurel were in a tizz over their attack on Anthony. While Laurel fretted at home, Nicola headed to the hospital to see whether he’d been admitted.

Anthony seemed to have taken the bash to the bonce like a champ, but could a delayed brain bleed taken effect, killing him after the fact?

    Steph was all smiles

Doting granddaughter Steph oscillated between being concerned for Anthony and – when not flirting with Ross again – feeling reconciliatory towards her mum. This was wildly out of character for Steph, who’s spent the last few weeks being nothing short of atrocious to poor Ruby.

Aware that her granddad was headed to the depo, could Steph have swung by just in time to hear his confession and foul words to Aaron? And, if so, did she sneak in to finish the old man off?

What happened in Emmerdale tonight: Anthony’s killer was ‘revealed’ as John cleaned up the crime scene – but there could be more to it

Emmerdale tonight saw a confrontation between Anthony Fox and Aaron Dingle that turned deadly. Though Aaron walked away and left Anthony alive, when he returned later, the vile abuser was dead.

John stepped in and took control, but is he covering up his lover’s crime or someone else’s?

Here’s everything that happened in Emmerdale tonight, Thursday January 23.

Aaron confronted Anthony – with dramatic consequences

After Aaron cornered him alone at the depot, Anthony tried to talk his way out of it, but for the first time he looked genuinely scared.

Aaron then kneed him in the stomach sending him flying to the ground. Aaron then opened up about his own past as Anthony lay cowering on the floor.

Anthony claimed he never hurt Ruby, it was a special bond and all about love. He broke down and said he knew he shouldn’t have done it. Aaron insisted he wouldn’t regret a thing if he killed Anthony, but he wasn’t going to as he had too much to lose. Aaron told Anthony he was going to the police station and he would confess to everything.

Anthony begged Aaron not to send him to prison as he’s an old man.

He then told Aaron: “She never tried to stop me, she enjoyed it as much as I did.” His next words sent Aaron over the edge: “How hard did you really try to stop your father?” What. A.Vile. Scumbag.

Absolutely losing it, Aaron beat him to near-death. Anthony was still conscious when he spat out a tooth and told Aaron to finish him off. But Aaron walked away.

    Anthony dead

Back at home, John noticed something was wrong with Aaron. It didn’t take long for Aaron to confess what he’d done to Anthony. He said all he could see was his dad and he was ready to kill him and it made him feel better. John reminded him he didn’t actually kill Anthony.

He told Aaron they couldn’t leave him there to die because Anthony might be a monster, but Aaron is not.

But when they went back to the depot, Anthony was dead. Aaron was panic-stricken as he realised he was going to prison. John stepped into action and insisted he wasn’t losing him over Anthony.

    John cleaned up

John then set about cleaning the crime scene and disposing of the body. He seemed VERY efficient as he dismissed Aaron and got his bottle of bleach out. John insisted he was going to put Aaron’s life back together. But the tooth remained unseen.

Steph and Ross came across John fixing his van later and it looked like he was going to be caught when Ross went to help and found a tarpaulin in the boot. But fortunately, it seemed, John had already disposed of the body.

Cain almost caught Aaron with his bloody clothes, but Aaron managed to get rid of him before bunging them on a very hot wash.

As John returned and refused to tell Aaron any details, Aaron was spiralling about being a murderer. But is he?

    Ruby

Despite Aaron firmly believing he’s a murderer, he left Anthony alive. And there was a good amount of time for someone to go an finish the job before Aaron returned with John.

At The Mill, Ruby was adamant she would not go to the police because she would die before Steph found out – a foreshadowing perhaps?

Ruby then went out to look for Steph and returned home even more subdued and shaken as Caleb hugged her and promised to make it all right. What is she hiding? Did she go to the depot looking for Steph and finish Anthony off?

When Steph returned, Caleb tried to tell her Anthony was a grown man and she shouldn’t worry about him. Ruby just apologised causing Steph to worry about how broken her mum seemed – it’s about time she noticed. Steph actually said sorry too. The pair of them hugged as Ruby promised to always keep her safe – there is nothing she wouldn’t do… Does that include murdering Anthony?

    Or was it Caleb?

Caleb went up to the depot and seemed slightly surprised that the place was as clean as it was. Does he know something?

Joe told Dawn was what wrong with him in Emmerdale tonight

    Joe collapsed

Dawn found Joe slumped at the wheel of his car, clearly unwell. She took his keys so he couldn’t drive anywhere. Dawn concluded he has a drug problem.

Joe explained it was what had happened with Cain – he was still living with the effects of the punch and blow to his head. He claimed to get headaches and be reliant on painkillers.

Dawn asserted that he was addicted to drugs and she wouldn’t enable him. So Joe threatened to tell Billy what had happened between them if Dawn told anyone about the pills. She called his bluff claiming she was going to confess anyway.

    Dawn couldn’t confess

As Dawn went to confess, Billy started gushing about how proud he was of her and she couldn’t go through with it. Just as Joe predicted.

Joe insisted he was getting help to get off the pills and then made a secret phone call and told the person on the other end of the line they had a problem. He said it was “getting more obvious now” and he didn’t know how long he’d got until people started noticing. So it’s not just a painkiller addiction then?

Meanwhile, Charity was in Noah’s firing line as she demanded he stay away from Joe, but Noah was not backing down. Charity insisted she was right, but Noah told her he’s lonely, he doesn’t have any proper mates and he wants to get to know Joe.

Even Kim tried to tell Charity Joe had changed, but Charity told her she was a fool. Kim then went into Joe’s room and put a recording device in so she could see if he was up to anything.

Of course Kim picked up Joe’s call on her recording device and it set her mind ticking.

    Also in Emmerdale tonight…

Laurel was STILL panicking, while Nicola was at the hospital trying to find out if Anthony had been admitted. She spun the nurse a story and came across as very suspicious. Honestly, we could really do without these two in this storyline.
