  • What happened on Emmerdale tonight: Cain tried to confess, April learned the truth, and Anthony gloated

What happened on Emmerdale tonight: Cain tried to confess, April learned the truth, and Anthony gloated

Emmerdale tonight found Cain Dingle on the verge of confessing to wife Moira about his fling with Ruby. As he drowned his sorrows, the drunken Dingle went on a village bender before being dragged home to his furious wife.

It was then that she revealed what the doctor had actually told her yesterday – and Cain once again swallowed his own lies.

Elsewhere, Ross made a bad situation worse, Jimmy and Nicola tried to cheer Angel up, and Ruby tried to build bridges with Steph… while smug Anthony continued to gloat.

Here’s everything that happened in Emmerdale tonight, Wednesday December 11.

Cain hit the bottle in Emmerdale tonight

Waking up in a prison cell, Cain was greeted by a sympathetic PC Swirling. With Jai agreeing not to press charges for yesterday’s rampage, officer Swirling offered Cain a few words of wisdom along with his release.

At home, an irritable Moira told Matty how she wanted nothing to do with Cain. A text from Chas reminded her about Cain’s upcoming surprise birthday party, but she and Matty were more focused on her treatment.

Phoning the station, Moira was infuriated to learn that Cain had already been released – and gone AWOL again. She was less than sympathetic to Swirling’s worries that Cain is ‘struggling,’ too.

But, after unveiling plans for a fifty-candle cake for Cain, Isaac had Moira doubting herself… the party’s back on!

Meanwhile, in the pub, Cain hit the bottle with a large whiskey. Nagging Chas and Mack both told him to go home and make up to his wife.

    Moira looks angry on Emmerdale

    Moira told Cain the truth

Instead of going home, Cain headed to the allotment. There, he set about pounding beers by himself. It was there that he was found by Liam, who was worried to hear that his friend hadn’t been home yet.

Hauling Cain home (and apparently leaving three unopened beers at the wayside!), Liam dropped the drunken Dingle off, where he was full of (slurred) apologies. Moira ruined the surprise element of his upcoming party, warning him that he needed to get his act together for the kids’ sake.

“There’s something I need to tell you,” he responded, his guilt weighing heavy.

And, on the verge of confessing, he was shocked to learn that Moira still needs radiotherapy for a tumour that could yet come back.

She then informed him that, as he couldn’t be trusted, she’d face the rest of her treatment alone. Well done, Cain.

April learned the truth about her mum’s death

Ross started the morning by vomiting up the bottle of vodka he’d confiscated from April. Finding him in his car, she was appropriately grossed out by his current living situation. When he told her how he was planning on leaving the village, the youth beseeched that he stay and teach her more about her mother.

Reluctantly, Ross agreed. Over lunch at the Hide, he fielded some difficult questions about mum Donna.

However, Ross’s excuses for Donna’s death didn’t sit right with April. And, as he kept digging himself into a hole, April learned how her mum had actually died trying to protect her. Talk about making a bad situation worse. And presumably the pizzas went to waste too, along with Cain’s tinnies.

    A visit from Anthony

Anthony popped around to see Ruby and Caleb with an apology for the day before. Describing himself as an ‘overprotective dad,’ he managed to smooth things over – while Steph volunteered her mum to make a coffee for Anthony.

She also had Ruby score an invite for Anthony to Cain’s birthday party before flouncing out to work. Alone together, the atmosphere turned frosty – while Anthony tried to reassure her that he planned on staying out of her business in future.

Later, she attempted to build bridges with Steph. A tearful Ruby apologised for Steph’s rough upbringing, reassuring her that she’d always loved her.

Outside, she informed Anthony that she’d sorted his invite to Cain’s party. As Anthony reiterated his hope that they could move on from the past – “things that are usually buried for a reason” – Ruby swallowed her obvious pain.

“Positivity at last,” laughed a smug Anthony. “Be a terrible shame to let anything ruin it.”

Ominous… but what are they both sweeping under the rug?

Jimmy and Nicola got festive in Emmerdale tonight

Jimmy was feeling regretful at having torn up Tom’s letter. As Nicola attempted to draw him out of his funk, he suggested that they channel Angel’s energy into something other than Tom – Christmas, for example.

Later, as the family set about decorating the house, Angel appeared to show signs of lightening up. However, her festive mood was short-lived – furtively hiding an incoming call from Hotten Prison and, presumably, dear uncle Tom.

Emmerdale spoilers: Marlon reaches breaking point over April as she turns to drugs to cope

In Emmerdale spoilers for Christmas week, youngster April Windsor spirals out of control.

The teenager was left shaken last week after she was abducted by menacing Jade, over cash she thought Ross Barton had stolen.

As leverage, Jade dragged April to a location that was terribly familiar to Ross: a multi-storey car park where April’s mum and his ex, Donna, died in 2014.

And Emmerdale spoilers for later this month reveal that things are set to take a more dramatic turn for April…

    Emmerdale spoilers: April spirals

Last week saw April’s life hang in the balance.  Rushing to the rescue, Ross managed to avert disaster – although this was more thanks to the arrival of Aaron and Mack, with Jade’s money.

Saved by Ross, April and Ross then headed back to the village. However, there was worse to come as she learned about the tragic circumstances behind mum Donna’s death.

Understandably, April was shaken to learn that her mother had taken her own life at that very same car park.

And fans will see another side to April later this month, as she struggles to come to terms with the past few weeks.

  • Emmerdale review of the week: Eric’s lost everything, Jade’s awful, and Moira’s got lovely hair

Emmerdale review of the week: Eric’s lost everything, Jade’s awful, and Moira’s got lovely hair

Our Emmerdale review this week is a mixed bag. There were things we loved and things we didn’t. A few things that we thought were really cleverly done and some that really weren’t.

Here’s what we thought in our Emmerdale review of the week.

    Brenda chats to Eric seriously?
Eric lost all of Brenda’s savings (Credit: ITV)

    Eric’s gamble

We have been surprised by how invested we are in Eric’s impulsive behaviour and the fall out. We’ve been musing about why this has drawn us in, when it’s really a rather low-key storyline. And here’s what we reckon – it’s old school, isn’t it?

Classic Emmerdale is full of stories about money worries, scams and fraud, so in terms of subject matter this feels like something from back in the day (though back then, it would have been Pollard doing the scamming!).

But more than that, it’s been a slow burn. Eric changed his medication a while ago. It was a throwaway, inconsequential storyline that we didn’t think was important. But since then his behaviour has become more impulsive, and now his whole world has fallen apart because he’s gambled away all his money and Brenda’s too on a cryptocurrency scam.

It’s so sad to see Eric suffering and to watch Brenda’s heart breaking. We wish there was a way back for them. But it doesn’t look good, does it?

Jade in between Billy and Ross
Why is Jade so scary? (Credit: ITV)

    Emmerdale review: Evil Jade

Jade continues to be a strange mix of mega-villain and petty criminal. And we do not like it. Nothing about her weird pursuit of Ross makes sense. In fact nothing about her at all makes sense.

She is a master criminal who has a team of henchmen and one henchwoman, evil enough to dangle poor April off a multi-storey carpark. She knows everything about everyone. She has a fancy car and someone to drive her round in it. And yet her line of business appears to be running half-hearted boxing matches. She’s hardly Lex Luther is she?

What was her plan when she viciously assaulted a little girl? If her minion had dropped poor April, Jade still wouldn’t have had her money.

Why are all these hard men so scared of her? Is it the beret? And WHY OH WHY didn’t Ross, or Billy, or Aaron or Mack just call the police?

Anyway given she’s still determined to get her mitts on the missing £3000 so it seems it’s not the last we’ve seen of Jade. YAY.

April is dangled over the side of the carpark
There was a silver lining to April’s ordeal (Credit: ITV)

    April, Marlon and Ross

The awful cloud of the whole Jade thing though, had a silver lining. Two in fact. First of all we love the revisiting of April and Ross’s relationship. They have a sweet, quirky bond that really works.

And secondly, how good was Marlon and April’s chat about Donna? It’s nice to see them together and their relationship changing as April grows up. Plus it’s always good when soaps show the long-lasting effects of grief – just as Emmerdale is doing with Moira and Holly.

    Emmerdale review: Caleb and Ruby
Caleb’s not listening to Ruby (Credit: ITYV)

Rubbish husbands in our Emmerdale review

Marlon’s a treasure, but elsewhere in Emmerdale, the husbands are definitely lacking. They’re all just useless! Cain’s moping about feeling sorry for himself after he *checks notes* slept with his sister-in-law. Poor lamb.

Caleb’s busy ignoring wife Ruby’s obvious distress about her dad’s presence and not even asking her what’s up.

Mack’s playing Disney dad but being a right wally about it (and frankly, he deserved that punch from Ross, and the slap from Jade’s henchwoman). Eric’s lost Brenda’s life savings… the men of Emmerdale aren’t covering themselves in glory, are they?

    Forgotten characters

Mary’s back! Yay! And even Ivy got a mention this week. We find it really frustrating how characters vanish for weeks at a time in Emmerdale. Now, if we could just find Rhona…

Emmerdale review: Will Moira be okay? (Credit: ITV)
Moira’s got lovely hair (Credit: ITV)

Things that didn’t make sense in Emmerdale this week

There were a few things that left us scratching our heads this week, so we thought we’d lump them all together.

First of all, how quiet was that multi-storey carpark, in the middle of Hotten, three weeks before Christmas? The only cars parked in the whole place belonged to Jade, Billy and Aaron. There were no people around. No office workers, no Christmas shoppers. No one saw a thing. What luck,

Elsewhere, we were bemused by Moira’s very sweet memories of Holly leaving notes for the fairies in the bottom of a tree trunk. Except Holly was about 16 or more when the Bartons first came to Emmerdale.

But we didn’t spend too long wondering about that because we were very distracted by Moira arriving home with a toss of her luscious locks. Which, though enviable, seemed slightly out of keeping for someone who’s just had major brain surgery.

How did the surgeons at Hotten General manage to get inside Moira’s noggin without so much as harming a hair on her head? Impressive work!

Amelia Flanagan’s ‘fabulous’ performance as April amid hostage showdown praised by fans

Fans of Emmerdale have praised actor Amelia Flanagan for her performance as April in last night’s episode. This came as Jade kidnapped the teenager, determined to get her money back from Ross (who, it turned out, never even had it).

Having her thugs dangle April from the roof of a high-rise cark park, Jade soon proved that she wasn’t to be messed with. Rushing to the rescue, Ross managed to avert disaster – although this was more thanks to the arrival of Aaron and Mack, with Jade’s money.

Back at home, April was in surprisingly good spirits, considering she’d just been kidnapped and dangled over the side of a building. However, there was worse to come as she learned about the tragic circumstances behind mum Donna’s death.

Understandably, April was shaken to learn that her mother had taken her own life at that very same car park.

And, amid the revelations, fans found themselves impressed by the young actress’s performance.

  • Donna flashback scenes leave fans feeling very emotional: ‘So heartbreaking’

Donna flashback scenes leave fans feeling very emotional: ‘So heartbreaking’

Emmerdale aired old footage last night as Ross Barton had triggering flashbacks to when his lover Donna Windsor died. As he battled to save April from Jade and her henchmen, Ross had to fight his haunting past.

Fans found the old episodes interwoven with the new one very emotional. They felt they were reliving Donna’s death all over again.

    Emmerdale last night

Jade proved to Ross she meant business about getting her £10k back on Thursday December 5 when she kidnapped April Windsor. She and her henchpeople drove April to the Hotten multistory carpark (where no one was parked, conveniently) and told Ross to get there fast – and alone.

He hijacked Billy’s car and raced to the carpark. But once there he realised exactly the significance of the venue: it was where Donna had died in 2014. As the soap aired footage from the event, Ross struggled to compose himself over April’s screams. She was being dangled over the edge of the roof and would only be brought to safety when Jade got her cash.

Fortunately, Mackenzie had come to his senses. He arrived with Aaron in the nick of time to hand back the money. Well, the seven grand that was left, at least. Although April was saved, Jade still wants her last £3k.

Ross then took April home and a throwaway comment led April to find out the truth about her mum’s death. She had only been five years old at the time, so had been shielded from it by Ross and her dad, Marlon.

How did Donna die in Emmerdale?

Donna had terminal lung cancer. She knew she didn’t have much longer left to live, so she got involved in criminal activity, alongside then-lover Ross. It was all to raise money to make sure her daughter was cared for after she’d gone.

But when she got involved with crime lord Gary North things went very wrong. Donna had tried to set Gary up on drugs charges, but he caught her and threatened April unless she retrieved some explicit photos for him.

Things turned bad and Donna and Gary ended up in a stand-off on the rooftop. She held her gun at him, but he promised to make April the subject of one of his photos if she shot. Donna then handcuffed herself to Gary and jumped over the roof.

Telling Ross she loved him, Donna knew she was going to die anyway and that taking Gary with her was the only way to keep April – and other young girls – safe. She then took her own life.

Fans heartbroken as they rewatch Donna scenes in Emmerdale

As the soap showed the scenes of Donna’s demise again, those watching at home were even more upset second time around.

“Verity Rushworth still so missed,” said one on social media with crying emojis.

Another added: “Brought memories back watching the Donna scene. Felt quite emotional! Brilliant acting from Amelia!”

“This episode in 2014 was so heartbreaking so to bring it all back was emotional but it was a brilliant episode,” agreed a third.

A fourth wrote: “Made me ever SO anxious watching a clip of Donna really LOVED her character and can’t believe you killed her off.”

Jade kidnaps April and viewers slam ‘car crash of an episode’

In an eventful episode of Emmerdale last night, ruthless boxing promoter and gangster Jade kidnapped young April Windsor, hoping to use her as leverage against Ross.

Believing that Ross had taken her money, Jade kidnapped April, bundling her into the boot of her car and driving to a place Ross knew all too well… the high-rise parking garage where Donna had taken her own life.

As Ross begged for April’s life, Jade’s thugs showed no mercy – dangling the teenager over the edge of the roof. Thankfully, Mack and Aaron intervened, with Mack finally giving up the money he’d stolen in the first place.

From there, it was back to the village, where April learned the truth about her mother’s death, and Mack copped a beating. An eventful episode, but something about it didn’t sit right with viewers.

Viewers slam ‘car crash’ of an episode amid April kidnap

Taking to social media as the episode aired, fans were quick to share their thoughts on how events had unfolded – and few were satisfied with what had just went down.

“That was kind of a car crash for an episode,” sighed one fan in a discussion thread on Reddit. In the comments below, other viewers were quick to point out the many flaws in the episode.

“I feel like with it being the middle of the day surely somebody would’ve seen a literal child behind held over the edge of the car park and called the police?” asked another fan.

“The so called hard core criminals would be done for kidnap and attempted murder. The entire scene was like an episode of Laurel and Hardy,” wrote a third.

“The gangsters in Emmerdale are always so unbelievable. There must be cameras in that carpark as well,” another viewer pointed out.

“Would April really get into a car with a virtual stranger? Jade was on the left so she must’ve figured out that there would be someone else in there,” said one fan.

All very exciting… but was it a bit much?

Also, Ruby was faced with an impossible choice, and Brenda realised she had no future with Eric.

Here’s what happened in Emmerdale tonight, Thursday December 5.

Things got really bad for Ross and April

    April was kidnapped

Marlon wouldn’t let April go into Hotten after school shopping. Lucky, then, that Jade pulled up to provide a lift to school and a friendly listening ear.

Jade then called Ross with a video of April tied up in the boot of the car. Ross sped off in Billy’s car who warned him he couldn’t go anywhere without a plan. Billy caught up with Mack and Aaron and told them what was going on and Mack came to his senses and realised exactly what his actions have caused.

    Memories of Donna haunted Ross

As Ross arrived at the multistory carpark where Donna died when she jumped over the edge while handcuffed to a criminal, Jade told Ross she had specifically picked the spot because of Donna and he had horrific flashbacks.

April screamed as she was held over the edge by Jade’s henchman. But Ross was frozen to the spot.

Coming to, Ross tried to talk Jade round, but she was clear: the money in exchange for April’s life.

And then along came Aaron and Mackenzie who saved the day by giving Jade her money back. Well, £7000 and change. Which obviously isn’t the £10k she wanted and she still wants Ross to pay it back. Jade is going away for a few days, but wants her £3k.

April found out the truth about her mum

Ross took April and left, but he made the mistake of saying he wasn’t going to let it happen again. April immediately picked up on it and confronted him.

He confessed he had been there when Donna died. He then told April her mum had jumped over the wall and April was devastated. She knew Donna could have stayed with her for longer, but she sacrificed their time together to catch a criminal.

At home Marlon tried to get through to April, who was sobbing, but she didn’t tell him what was really wrong.

Meanwhile, Ross gave Mackenzie a beating. And when Charity stepped in, he pushed her over too. And then Ross ended up being the bad guy when Moses was watching and begged his dad to stop. Charity told Ross he would never see his son again.

Ruby given a choice in Emmerdale tonight

Ruby was still trying to tell Caleb how distressed she is by her dad’s presence. She begged him to stand by her side and understand what she needs. Caleb promised he would. He then confronted Anthony in the street and told him he would always back Ruby, so Anthony decided to leave again. Only Steph caught him and stopped him. She decided to go with him and he promised to stay one more night so she could pack up.

Meanwhile Caleb realised that Anthony’s departure would affect their relationship with Steph. So he tried to talk to Ruby again. And she cracked open another bottle of wine. As she ranted about how much she hated her father and she didn’t care if he died, Steph walked in and told her they would never see her again if they cut Anthony out.

Caleb was furious that Ruby was ‘choosing’ to let Steph walk out of their lives. Ruby insisted she wasn’t choosing, this was not a choice, she couldn’t have her dad in her life. And Caleb still clearly couldn’t see how distressed she was and told her she had to accept Anthony so they could keep Steph. Here’s an idea, Caleb, trying realising your wife is going through something huge rather than shouting at her.

A break-up for Eric and Brenda in Emmerdale tonight

Eric and Brenda were very awkward with each other, but he thought flowers would make it up to her. She was not impressed given they didn’t have money for flowers.

He then set up Champagne and a huge food spread in the shop and invited Brenda over. Eric got down on knee again and promised he wasn’t being impulsive, he genuinely wanted her to marry him.

Liam walked in mid-proposal to get some milk and the situation became very uncomfortable. Once Liam had gone, Brenda tearfully told him her answer was no.

Brenda said she needed to find out who she was again. She then ended their relationship because too much has happened. Is there any way back for them?

    Also in Emmerdale tonight…

    Angelica fought Tom’s corner

Tom sent Jimmy a letter, who put it in the bin much to Angelica’s disgust. Jimmy and Nicola tried to talk some sense into her, but Angelica continued to fight Tom’s corner insisting Tom is still family.

Angelica seemed to think Tom wasn’t as bad as her because she killed someone and he never killed Belle. Can her parents make her see sense?

Jai was unsuccessful at manifesting success

Jai was listening to success podcasts and manifesting ‘success’ for himself. But he found Ross lurking in the office having overheard him. Ross wanted to do another van theft. But Jai – with success clearly in mind – said no.

    Jade kidnaps April

While he is worried about the situation, Ross gets a call from Jade, revealing she has kidnapped April. But where is she taking her?

Ross manages to persuade Billy to lend him his car so he can go save April. After all, if Billy had stuck to the deal to throw the fight then they probably wouldn’t be in the situation. But Ross still lacks the money.

When he finally gets a pin on their location, everything gets worse for Ross. He works out he is headed to the exact place Donna died 10 years ago.

Upon arriving, Ross spots April being held near the edge of the car park, as Jade continues to demand the money he doesn’t have. How will Ross get out of this? Will he be able to save April? And how will he cope with the memories of Donna’s death haunting him?

Viewers will remember Ross and April had an adorable friendship following Donna’s death. Ross and Donna were in a secret relationship at the time, and afterward he became very protective of her daughter.

Towards the end of Ross’ last stint in the village, they may not have had many scenes together, but that’s about to change.
