Emmerdale’s saddest animal deaths including Batley the dog and Minty the lamb

Emmerdale fans were left reeling back in August after it looked like Belle Dingle’s beloved dog Piper had been killed at the hands of her abusive husband Tom. Fortunately Piper is still alive and Tom had just tricked Belle into thinking she was dead.

In Emmerdale on Wednesday October 2, Moira was responsible for the death of all her son Isaac’s sheep.

Sadly, these aren’t the first animals to meet a sorry end in Emmerdale, though. We’ve rounded up the most heartbreaking (and shocking!) animal deaths over the years.

Aaron [Danny Miller] discovers Clyde injured,

    Clyde – Aaron’s dog

Aaron Dingle – who was then known as Aaron Livesy – adopted Clyde in 2009 when he found him starving. Aaron did his best to train Clyde, who was volatile and even attacked Edna Birch’s dog, Tootsie. But eventually Clyde got in a fight with a bigger dog and lost a lot of blood. Paddy put Clyde down with heartbroken Aaron by his side.

    Daisy – Marlon’s dog

Marlon’s Dalmation Daisy originally belonged to his wife, Tricia. When Tricia died Marlon looked after the pooch though there was a hairy moment in 2012 when she was knocked over by Ashley Thomas.

That was nothing, though, compared to the shocking scenes in 2015 when alcoholic Laurel knocked over Daisy when she was drunk. Daisy died by the road, and Laurel tried to bury her to hide her involvement in the crime, only to be rumbled by Cain Dingle.

    Batley – Edna Birch’s dog

Grumpy Edna could never hide her irritation at her fellow Emmerdale residents, and her disapproval of the antics in the village was clear! But Edna had a soft side and she adored her little dog, Batley.

Batley was a real character – much like Piper – and the fans were shocked when he was kicked by Edna’s horrible granddaughter Eve Jenson. Just a few weeks later, everyone was devastated when Batley fell ill and was put down.

The fans were so upset by the whole thing that Batley’s sad demise even scooped him Best Exit at the British Soap Awards in 2002!

    Tip – Jai’s dog

Jai loved little rescue pooch Tip. But Tip met a sorry end when he was killed – accidentally – by Andrea Tate. Just like Laurel before her, Andrea tried to cover up the crime but was found out.

Turner's new secretary, Caroline Bates, wants the police to investigate the shooting of her dog. It looks like more trouble for Jackie.

    Bundle – Caroline Bates’s dog

In 1984, trigger-happy Jackie Merrick shot and killed Bundle in front of a group of horrified schoolchildren! Bundle had been bothering Jackie’s sheep but the Bates family were so upset they sued Jackie!

A ball of fire suddenly strikes the stables as Kim Tate, as played by Claire King, is showing the Windsors, Samson the horse. Watching them Frank Tate, as played by Norman Bowler, rushes to help as explosions go off around them, narrowly saving Kim from her caravan before it explodes.

Dark Star – Kim Tate’s horse

Horse-lover Kim adored her beautiful horse Dark Star, but he was killed in 1993 when the plane crashed on Emmerdale  village – which was then called Beckindale.

    Smokey – Seth Armstrong’s dog

Seth’s beloved pet Smokey also met his fate on the night of the plane crash when burning rubble destroyed the Pollards’ house. Elizabeth Pollard had been looking after Smokey that evening, but had stormed out after a row with husband Eric. Poor Elizabeth was also killed that night.

Hamish – Belle Dingle’s Shetland pony

Belle thought the world of her little pony Hamish. He had to be put down when he got ill, with Belle sobbing by his side. Piper is buried next to Hamish, close to the Dingles’ cottage Wishing Well.

    Steve – Lydia’s cockatoo

Lydia’s cockatoo was fond of biting people and was known to be grumpy, but Lydia loved him. She was terribly upset in 2017 when he escaped through an open window and flew into some power lines, which killed him instantly. In fact, Lydia was so upset that she had Steve stuffed!

We’re not sure where he is now, which is probably for the best.

    Minty the lamb

Young Isaac Dingle was horrified when he did a farm visit with his mum and discovered the runt of the lambs would be killed. He managed to persuade dad Cain to let him have Minty as a pet. Isaac grew very attached to him and the whole village joined in to search for Minty when he went missing.

Sadly, Minty didn’t make it, as Moira had warned, he just wasn’t strong enough to survive. Isaac was sure his mum had killed his pet, but she insisted she hadn’t. Though given Moira’s behaviour now, we’re not so sure!

  • Belle double-crossed Tom and took her power back – everything that happened in Emmerdale tonight

Belle double-crossed Tom and took her power back – everything that happened in Emmerdale tonight

Emmerdale tonight saw Belle Dingle stop letting everyone else control her life and take charge of it herself – at last. She finally did the right thing and told the police everything – right about the same time as he was fabricating a story about being robbed. Let’s hope the beginning of the end is on the way.

Here’s everything that went down in Emmerdale tonight, Tuesday October 1.

Belle stood by Tom's hospital bedside as he manipulated her further (Credit: ITV)

    Belle took control

Quite rightly Belle was beside herself with all the lies and now the Dingles are planning for her to run off to Ireland. She did not want to go, but Lydia taking over everything saw Belle eventually agree. We really can’t understand how Lydia thinks this is for the best, but still.

Belle then snuck off under the pretence she was going to borrow a suitcase off Mandy. Soon enough, though, she arrived at Tom’s hospital bedside with one minute to spare before his deadline. He wanted to make a deal.

As he manipulated her and tried to gaslight her, he told her he wouldn’t tell the police if she stopped ‘lying’ he was an abuser. Belle stood up to him and insisted it was self-defence. He continued to manipulate, saying his story was the one that would hold up in court.

Employing his usual tactics, focusing on her mental health, Belle found herself agreeing. But then he insisted on a kiss ‘to seal the deal’. Having him touch her seemed to be too much.

Later, Tom actually stuck to his side of the bargain and recounted his lies to the police that he was attacked by two men who were trying to rob him. He described them in great detail as the police took notes and Jimmy listened in horror to his tall tale. Tom even insisted despite her fragile state there was no way Belle would ever have stuck an axe in his back – big mistake. Huge.

But it turned out Belle had double-crossed him – right at that moment, she was at the police station, taking her power back. Having dug up the axe, Belle told the desk sergeant she was the victim of domestic abuse and attacked her husband in self-defence.

Hopefully her tricking Tom into telling the cops his lies will help her case. Either way, this is finally the right move for Belle after the storyline took a somewhat questionable turn, and we can only pray the soap gods (or the producers!) see fit to give us the correct outcome.

Mack accuses Moira of letting the sheep out at Butlers in Emmerdale

Moira didn’t let the sheep out in Emmerdale tonight

Fed-up with being mollycoddled, Moira was not happy when Ruby was called round to ‘babysit’ her. But Ruby, in typical Ruby fashion, just barged in and started finding her way around the kitchen. It’s clear a bond is growing between these two and we like it. Ruby even almost opened up about missing her mum, but then decided not to.

However, Mack soon ruined things when he came running in and said the sheep had escaped – the sheep Moira had newly bought as pets for Isaac on an impulse. He sat Moira down and tried to explain to her she needed to stop fighting him on everything. He told her she couldn’t work alone and she got emotional, but agreed to try to stay away from the farming.

It then turned out Isaac had left the gate open and Mack was forced to apologise. But something tells us he’s not wrong about her working alone…

    Also in Emmerdale tonight…

Nicola gets the truth out of Laurel about her fling with Charles
Nicola got the truth out of Laurel about her fling with Charles (Credit: ITV)

Charles wants Laurel, Laurel wants Charles, but neither will admit it

After agreeing their sex session was just a one-off, Laurel decided to quit the church committee. Charles was a bit upset and tried tried to find out what’s going on in Laurel’s head by probing Nicola. Not the best idea as Nicola’s about as unsubtle as a brick. She soon twigged something had happened between them and rushed round to see her mate for all the gossip.

After Nicola tricked Laurel into telling her the truth, Laurel opened up and admitted she’d slept with the vicar. But then Charles came round and the situation was pretty awkward. Nicola got the hint and left quick smart.

As Laurel and Charles bickered again, Charles let slip he finds her irresistible. She tried to be responsible and insist it was over, but it was clear it isn’t what either of them wanted. What do they want? We’re not entirely sure, but chances are it’s a bit more afternoon delight.

    Aaron rejected John

Needing to get rid of his stolen smart watches quick, er, smart, Aaron needed a vehicle. He asked Mack, who told him to ask John. But John wasn’t playing ball and wouldn’t lend Aaron his van.

After John’s lacklustre secret reveal last week and now this, if Aaron stealing smart watches is the best they can give Danny Miller and Oliver Farnworth to do, split these two up now and spare us any more hours of this mundane guff.

  • Recognise Detective Foy in Emmerdale? Here’s where you know Robert Cavanah from including previous Dales stint

Recognise Detective Foy in Emmerdale? Here’s where you know Robert Cavanah from including previous Dales stint

Robert Cavanah is currently playing DS Foy in Emmerdale – he’s the one with the task of getting to the bottom of what happened to Tom King.

Tom, of course, has managed to survive Belle whacking him in the back with an axe.

The Dingles have closed ranks and are claiming Belle was with Charity, and now poor DS Foy is trying to work out exactly what happened, when.

But in the meantime, the Emmerdale viewers are busy trying to work out where they have seen DS Foy – or actually his actually alter ego, Robert Cavanah – before.

So we did some of our own investigation and here’s what we discovered.

    Robert Cavanah and Michelle Hardwick
Robert Cavanah in The Royal with Michelle Hardwick who now plays Vanessa Woodfield in Emmerdale (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)

    The Royal

Robert is a familiar face to fans of medical drama The Royal. He played hospital secretary Adam Carnegie and appeared in 35 episodes, across seasons 5-7, from 2006 until 2009.

Robert starred alongside Michelle Hardwick – who plays Vanessa Woodfield in Emmerdale.

But he was a familiar face long before that, having appeared in just about every British television show you can name!

In the early days of his career, Robert appeared in Doctor Finlay, and Highlander. He’s been in Cracker, Hamish MacBeth and Insiders, and played Heathcliff in a TV adaptation of Wuthering Heights, among many others!

    Tommy Grant in EastEnders

In 2004, Robert landed the role of Tommy Grant in EastEnders. He was an older boyfriend of Vicki Fowler.

Though Tommy was Vicki’s boyfriend, he fancied her stepmum, Chrissie Watts. She knew he had the hots for him so she tricked him into thinking she felt the same.

She arranged to meet him in the loos at The Queen Vic (how romantic!) and when he stripped off, she nicked his clothes and forced him to run through the market in his birthday suit!

Vicki’s dad, Den, though took more traditional revenge. He pinned Tommy to the table in the club, and told him never to come back to Albert Square. Not surprisingly, Tommy scarpered!

First stint in Emmerdale: Val Pollard’s big mistake

Cast your minds back to 2014 when Val Pollard admitted to a holiday fling. Not only did her indiscretion ruin her marriage to Eric, she also contracted HIV.

She found out she could have the virus after being contacted by her holiday romance – Ian Chamberlain. Ian was played by Robert Cavanah!

He came to the village once to tell Val that there was a possibility he could have passed on HIV.

Then a few months later he returned, wanting to know Val’s results. She lied and told him she was all clear.

What else has Robert Cavanah been in?

Since his first appearance in Emmerdale, Robert’s been busy! He’s had roles in Waterloo Road, Silent Witness, Doctors, Casualty, Outlander, The Crown, and Midsomer Murders, among many more!

He’s also been on stage including at the RSC and the National Theatre.

  • As Tom demands Belle comes to see him, fans left furious over story direction ‘the writers should be ashamed of themselves’

As Tom demands Belle comes to see him, fans left furious over story direction ‘the writers should be ashamed of themselves’

Fans of Emmerdale have been left feeling annoyed at the direction the soap has taken with the Tom and Belle storyline, with one viewer insisting the writers should be ‘ashamed of themselves’.

This year has seen the long running story of Belle Dingle’s abusive marriage to Tom King. Fans thought Belle was finally free of Tom, but recent events have brought them together again.

Emmerdale fans have described recent scenes as “ridiculous” and want to see an end to the “pantomime”.

What happened between Tom and Belle in Emmerdale?

Following months of coercive abuse, Belle finally ended her marriage to Tom earlier this year.

Sadly, this hasn’t been the end of the torture for Belle, as Tom continued to exert his power. One such time saw him give away Belle’s beloved dog Piper and pretend the dog had sadly passed away.

More recently, Tom has started a new relationship with Amelia Spencer. But he’s still hellbent on getting revenge on Belle.

Amelia, who believes Tom genuinely loves her – bless – arranged to meet Belle. But it was a set up and Belle found herself alone with Tom. The confrontation ended with Tom being left for dead with an axe in his back.

It was later revealed that Tom was alive. He had managed to remove the axe and walk out into the village.

In Monday’s episode (September 30), Tom woke up in hospital. Dumb Amelia and even dumber Jimmy kept pushing for Belle to be held accountable. But Tom pretended he couldn’t remember who attacked him.

Later, when alone, he pulled his mobile from beneath his bed and called Belle. He ordered her to visit him or else he’d tell everyone what she did.

Fans are not happy with this latest turn in events and think things are getting “ridiculous”.

    Emmerdale fans slam writers

One fan wrote on Instagram: “The writers should be ashamed of themselves. It was supposed to be helping victims of domestic violence, but it’s anything but that. The whole storyline has been a shambles, but now it’s gone beyond that.”

Others agreed, with a second fan writing on X: “This was such a good storyline! I don’t understand why you’ve turned it into some kind of farce.” A third viewer said: “You really have made a absolute dogs dinner of this, what started out as a serious issue has now descended into a ridiculous pantomime.”

Another fan added: “The way the writers have dealt with the Belle and Tom storyline is nothing short of a disgrace…”

Other fans are angry at the way Amelia and Jimmy are being portrayed, with some insisting that nobody can be that stupid. “Amelia sounds more and more insane than ever,” said one, while another said: “I know Jimmy’s never been a Mastermind champ but he’s not this thick surely?!”

Earlier this year, Emmerdale producer Laura Shaw told Entertainment Daily and other media that the Belle and Tom storyline is “going to run until the end of this year”, so fans don’t have to suffer for too much longer.

Emmerdale spoilers: Confident Tom tricks Isaac into helping him destroy evidence – but someone else has seen everything!

In next week’s Emmerdale spoilers, the clock is ticking for Tom to destroy evidence of his abuse against Belle. He tricks young Isaac into giving him access to his tablet, but Carl is watching. Will he reveal what he’s seen?

Tom is under pressure in Emmerdale spoilers

With a court case looming, Tom doesn’t want anything to affect his chances of victory. Which means he needs to find a way of destroying his tablet.

Viewers will know the device contains proof that Tom was terrorising Belle. Not only does it have the incriminating images he was using to blackmail her with, there are also recordings from his hidden spy cams.

Little Isaac Dingle is now in possession of the tablet, and Tom has been keeping a close eye on him, waiting for his chance to get it back.

    Tom tricks Isaac

An opportunity presents itself when Tom is able to catch Isaac on his own. He asks for his tablet back and Isaac reveals it’s back at Butlers Farm. Not only that, but he also tells Tom where the spare key is hidden!

Later, Tom retrieves the key and lets himself into Butlers, but is forced to take cover when Matty suddenly walks in.

Will he realise there’s an intruder in the house?

Belle goes to Moira for help

Meanwhile, Belle’s mind is still on the strange voicemail she received from Moira last week.

Moira, who’s battling a brain tumour, had had a look at Tom’s tablet and found the incriminating images of Belle. But before she was able to do anything about it she suffered a seizure, which wiped any memory she had of that moment.

Belle wants to know what Moira was on about in her message, but sadly she’s unable to remember.

Carl discovers the truth about his cousin

On her way back from seeing Moira, Belle is startled to run into Tom.

Once again he tries his best intimidation tactics and tells Belle she doesn’t stand a chance in court. Tom is confident he’ll walk away a free man, a thought which leaves Belle consumed with fear.

As Tom returns home he pulls out the tablet he’s been able to retrieve from the farm. Thinking no one is about, he uses a rock to smash the screen to smithereens. But Tom’s not alone – Carl is watching from nearby and sees everything. But will he keep the discovery to himself? Or is Tom finally about to get his comeuppance?

Tom woke up as Belle worried about her future – here’s what happened in Emmerdale tonight

Emmerdale tonight saw Tom wake up in hospital. Will he tell the police who was responsible for putting him there?

Meanwhile, Moira’s behaviour continued to worry her family and Aaron was questioned by the police over some stolen watches.

Here’s everything that happened in Emmerdale tonight, Monday, September 30.

    Emmerdale tonight: Tom woke up

Amelia and Jimmy continued to share one brain cell as they waited for news on Tom at the hospital. A doctor soon put them out of their misery when she informed them that Tom was improving.

With police waiting to talk to Tom, Amelia decided to get her side of things across and informed them that it was Belle. Jimmy suggested it could have been Cain, but Amelia quashed that idea and told him Cain was definitely in Scotland.

“I’m Amelia, his girlfriend, which Belle was really jealous about,” Amelia told the police – with a straight face no less.

Amelia told the police that Belle wanted to punish Tom, with Jimmy adding: “It doesn’t take a genius to work out what happened.” Clearly.

Later, once Tom was awake, Jimmy asked Tom if it was Belle. But Tom didn’t respond. When questioned by the police, Tom claimed that he couldn’t remember what happened. “It’s blank,” he said. But he said he thinks he was meeting someone.

Idiot Jimmy continued to throw Belle’s name around and told Tom not to cover for her.

Once Jimmy had left, it was revealed Tom did in fact remember what happened. He called Belle and ordered her to visit him by 1pm tomorrow. He warned her not to tell anyone or he would tell the police everything.

Will Belle ever be rid of Tom?

    Charity covered for Belle

Sam, Lydia and Charity continued to worry about Belle. When Lydia told Belle that Tom was out of danger, Belle said she might as well hand herself in.

However, Charity pointed at herself and said: “You have an alibi now.”

When police questioned Belle, Charity claimed her and Belle had been on a long walk at the time of the attack.

The police asked Belle about her relationship with Tom and she simply responded: “He was difficult to live with.” Which must be a contender for understatement of the century.

The Dingles aren’t the brightest bunch and didn’t quite get their story straight, with Lydia and Charity contradicting each other. After Lydia said they were all fond of Tom, Charity said the police could take their pick of potential suspects because ‘he’s not very popular.’

Will that slip up come back to bite them?

    Moira’s family continued to worry

Moira was annoyed when Matty arrived with his bags and told her he was staying for a while. She claimed she didn’t need a babysitter, but Matty lied that he was only there because he was sick of Amy and Amelia’s drama.

When Mack came in to check on her under the guise that he needed a drink, Moira continued to insist she was fine and didn’t need to be checked up on.

She then promised her young son Isaac that he could have his own sheep. Mack told her it wasn’t a good idea, but she forged ahead with the plan.

In an ominous moment, Isaac asked his mum: “And you won’t kill them?” She promised him that no she wouldn’t… oh dear.

Later, Matty and Mack discovered Moira had left the house alone and immediately went searching for her. Mack found her returning from the farm up the road where she’d placed an order for Isaac’s sheep.

Moira told Mack to stop treating her like a child and then told Matty to pack his bags and go home because she was fine. But is she really?

    Police questioned Aaron

Aaron and John continued to flirt – their own form of flirting anyway. John gave us all a bit too much information when he told Aaron: “I can’t promise you a good night sleep.” Thanks, John.

Later, John watched on as a policeman approached Aaron. He asked him if he knew about any stolen watches as his car had been seen near the scene of the crime.

A clearly guilty Aaron denied all knowledge and happily showed the policeman the boot of his car, which was empty bar a couple of tools. Where has he hidden them?

Will Belle go to prison as Tom threatens to tell the police axe attack truth?

In tonight’s episode of Emmerdale (Monday, September 30), Tom woke up in hospital after being attacked by Belle, leaving her worried that she’s facing a prison sentence for her actions.

In Emmerdale last week, Belle feared she’d killed Tom after she plunged an axe into his back leaving him laying lifeless on the ground.

However, it was later revealed that Tom was still alive. He is now conscious in hospital, but what does this mean for Belle?

    What happened in Emmerdale?

In Monday’s episode of Emmerdale (Monday, September 30), Tom’s uncle Jimmy and girlfriend Amelia were told by the doctor that Tom’s condition had improved and that his pain levels were under control.

While Amelia and Jimmy made their feelings clear – that they believed Belle was responsible for Tom’s injuries, Tom claimed to the police that he couldn’t remember what happened.

However, once he was alone, he called Belle. He ordered her to visit him in hospital and warned her that if she told anybody he’d tell everybody what she did to him.

Emmerdale: Will Belle go to prison?

Upon hearing that Tom was out of danger, Belle told Sam, Lydia and Charity that she might as well hand herself in. Charity, however, was adamant that she would do no such thing.

The Dingles covered for Belle, with Charity giving Belle an alibi – they were out walking at the time of Tom’s attack.

It’s likely that Tom will go down the blackmail root due to his controlling nature. But if he does report Belle, provided the axe remains free of her prints, it’ll be her word against his.

There have been no reports that Belle or actress Eden Taylor-Draper are leaving Emmerdale. However, it’s likely that James Chase, who plays Tom, will leave at the end of the year.

This backs up what executive producer Laura Shaw previously told Entertainment Daily and other media. Addressing the length of the storyline, Laura confirmed: “It’s going to run until the end of this year.”

Given it’s hard for a character to get redemption after such a storyline, it makes sense that Tom will leave the Dales. So, whatever happens, Belle will soon be free of her abuser.

    Amelia’s annoying

We get it. Amelia’s a troubled teen mum, who’s lacking a father figure, and Tom’s handsome and charming. But URGH. She’s being a total brat. The way she’s been speaking to Chas and to Kerry and Amy is not acceptable. And we understand that she’s a victim of Tom’s manipulation, too, but come on – open your eyes, Amelia. And apologise to Chas while you’re at it.

Ramping up the tension in our Emmerdale review

Remember waaaaaay back in the Woolpack siege? Chas and Debbie were in the flooded pub cellar, with murderer Cameron Murray hunting them. The lights were flickering on and off and giving us an occasional glimpse of Cameron getting closer. It was like a horror film. We abso-blooming -lutely LOVED it!

And we were reminded of those tense scenes this week as Tom trailed his axe up the stone steps to find Belle. Obviously when he started smashing through the door it wasn’t just like any old horror film, it was like the iconic scene in The Shining when Jack Nicholson does the same. And it was just as frightening as a furious Tom got the better of poor Belle.

We were holding our breath as Belle pointed the gun at him, only to realise the safety was on. And when Tom made out he was going to shoot her, we shrieked just as much as Belle did (more, probably).

    The brilliance of Eden Taylor-Draper

Belle’s terror was so tangible and real that we’re calling it right now – actress Eden Taylor Draper should win every award going for her portrayal of frightened Belle. James Chase deserves awards too for playing volatile, dangerous Tom. They’ve both been amazing throughout this whole storyline.

Lydia’s transformation into a master criminal

Lydia refusing to call the police or an ambulance and planning to dispose of Tom’s body was unexpected to say the least. But we are here for it.

We can see her as the crime boss running the Dingle family. Like if Don Corleone from The Godfather had been a woman, from Yorkshire, in a tabard. Perfection.

The aftermath in our Emmerdale review

We didn’t want Tom to die, of course. We wanted him to face justice for what he did to Belle. But now he’s not dead, we sort of wish he had kicked the bucket. Because there is NO way he’s going to let Belle get away with this and there’s bound to be all sorts of repercussions for poor Ms Dingle. We’re not sure we can handle it!

And can we just say what luck that that the first person Tom came upon as he made his bid for freedom was Liam. Dr. Liam. What are the chances, eh?

Kim and Will are better together in Emmerdale

    Will v Kim

Of course we were mostly focused on Tom and Belle this week but there were other stories happening. Will and Kim’s marriage seems to be well and truly over.

We hate Will and Kim fighting and we wish he’d never slept with stupid Rose. They were much better together than they are apart with their petty squabbles. BUT we quite enjoyed the glimpse of Kim’s financial adviser who spent the night – he’s definitely giving us Graham vibes!

    Get over yourself, Dawn

Yep, we still hate Dawn and we’re still not sure why Dawn hates Will. YOU KILLED A MAN, DAWN! And Will covered it up for you. And then Kim covered it up for Will. Can’t you all just get along?!

    Charles and Laurel

No. That’s all we can say about that. Just no.

Tom’s fate was revealed as the Dingles botched the cover-up – everything that happened in Emmerdale tonight

Emmerdale tonight revealed Tom was still alive after being stabbed with an axe by Belle. But as the Dingles worked to make sure Belle wasn’t blamed, their faffing about may have just led to her downfall. Where’s Cain when you need him, eh?

Meanwhile, Amy continued to stick her nose in and Amelia continued to whinge. Here’s everything that happened in Emmerdale tonight.

    The Dingles started a cover-up

Shellshocked Belle ran back to the house where Lydia, Sam and Vinny arrived. She recounted what had happened, Vinny checked the body and said Tom was definitely dead.

As the family argued what to do, Lydia took charge and insisted they didn’t call the police or any authorities, they just needed to get the body off their land. It was very out of character for Lydia who held an entire Dingle court when she thought one of them had killed her rapist Craig and even left Sam for a while, believing he was responsible. Apparently this is different. How, we’re not too sure.

As the Dingles worried about how to make it all happen, with Sam suggesting they call Cain who has conveniently been packed off to Scotland for this storyline, Amy then arrived. Lydia made up a ridiculous story about Tom never having turned up and Belle having been on a walk with Charity. Seriously, call Cain now.

Amy seemed to buy it, but Vinny was still really against the whole cover-up. They ummed and ahhed and eventually agreed they would go ahead, but when they got into the flat, they discovered Tom’s body was gone. The axe remained, though.

Colour us – and the Dingles – confused!

Tom was alive – just – in Emmerdale tonight

Sam and Vinny raced off to find Tom and stop him going to the police, but it was too late, Dr Liam had found him collapsed in a field and called an ambulance. Sam and Vinny came across them and played dumb asking questions to get info. They then decided it was best to go to the hospital to make sure he didn’t say anything.

Belle also wanted to go to the hospital, but Lydia wouldn’t let her. She insisted Belle stick to the story that she went for a walk with Charity. However, Belle escaped and drove off.

The doctors were struggling to bring Tom’s pain levels under control and he had lost a lot of blood. But he’s still clinging on to life – just.

Belle soon came to a horrifying realisation: if he dies, she’s taken another life and has to live with it, if he survives she’s going to prison for attempted murder.

“He’s won,” she cried. Let’s really, really hope not.

    Amelia whinged some more

In the café, Amelia was continuing her campaign to be named soaps whiniest and most annoying character 2024. She whinged at Amy that she didn’t get what the big deal was, Tom was the one in danger from Belle. In this case, she wasn’t wrong, but still.

Amy meanwhile, suddenly keen to play the hero in this storyline, was shocked when Amelia revealed she’d told Tom Belle was going to the police. Seriously? What did she think was going to happen?

When Amelia found out Tom had been stabbed, she was firmly team Tom. She was sure Belle was responsible and went to the hospital to be with her love.

Although she was right, we still can’t be doing with her!

    Also in Emmerdale tonight…

Jimmy got the call to say Tom had been found by Liam and taken to hospital. He immediately blamed the King curse – and then the Dingles. He is sure Belle is behind this and if Tom wakes up and confirms it, Belle may just be right, Tom will have won.

When will stupid Jimmy see the light and realise who the villain is here? Probably never knowing him, but we can hope!

  • As Tom is ‘axed’ by Belle, all the burning questions we have after last night’s jaw-dropping cliffhanger

As Tom is ‘axed’ by Belle, all the burning questions we have after last night’s jaw-dropping cliffhanger

Belle finally fought back against abusive Tom in Emmerdale last night – and boy did she fight back. Terrified and scared for her own life, Belle stabbed him in the back with an axe. But as he lies lifeless on the floor, the question is: will he survive?

In fact, we’ve got a few burning questions we need answering – but we fear it’ll be a while before we find out the answers…

What happened in Emmerdale last night?

Amelia tricked Belle into meeting her at the Dingles’ but then Tom turned up instead. After taunting her, then trying to manipulate her, he flipped, threw Belle to the floor and started beating her. She still stood up to him, though and took her chance when his back was turned. She grabbed Sam’s shotgun and escaped to a derelict building. Tom followed her and smashed in the door with an axe.

Belle then shot him, but she hadn’t taken the safety off the gun. He laughed and took it off her then held her at gun point, but as he turned round and admired himself in the mirror, she stabbed him in the back with the axe. Tom fell on to a disused mattress as Belle sobbed in shock at what she’d done.

    1. Does Tom die in Emmerdale after Belle stabs him?

Well, it’s the most obvious one, really, isn’t it? Will he survive having an axe stabbed in his back?

There are several reasons we don’t think Tom will die. One is that fans will almost certainly want Tom to face justice. The soap knows people weren’t happy when rapist Craig was killed off last year, as it was seen as an easy way out and Lydia didn’t get justice. Viewers are determined that Belle should get justice in the proper way for all she’s been through.

Also, show boss Laura Shaw shared with Entertainment Daily! and other media back in June: “We said right from the beginning that we wanted to tell this story as truthfully and as authentically as we can.”

Addressing the length of the storyline, Laura confirmed: “It’s going to run until the end of this year.”

So for it to keep going, Tom must survive, right? Right?

    2. Is Belle leaving Emmerdale after Tom attack?

Belle was frightened and held hostage by her abuser, but one thing makes us worried for her: she stabbed Tom in the back. This might make a self-defence claim a bit tricky. But hopefully the cuts and bruises on her and his fingerprints on both the gun and the axe will help her case.

There is also the fact Tom has been rather convincing that Belle’s mental health is making her lie about his abuse. He has Amelia and Jimmy fooled (okay, not great examples), but once upon a time Charity, Cain and Lydia were all taken in by it. So will the police think so too?

Could Belle be looking at a stint inside for this? Will the storyline run with her inside until she can prove what really happened?

Emmerdale has not confirmed Belle will be leaving and as such a long-standing character, we can’t imagine she’ll be off any time soon. We need to see her recover and regain her strength and start to feel happy again.

    3. Is James Chase leaving Emmerdale as Tom?

It was recently reported in The Sun that James will be leaving the soap as Tom King. Although Emmerdale hasn’t confirmed anything directly, it seems undeniable that he will be off.

James himself told Entertainment Daily!: “[Belle] needs justice for what happened to her and I think also the viewer needs that. From all the hell we’ve seen Belle get put through, we have to see her win in the end or at the very least, for him to lose.

“I think definitely at least prison, there needs to be at least that,” he added.

That sounds like James confirming his exit to us. But will it be now – or further down the line?

    4. What happens next?

Tonight in Emmerdale (Friday September 27) an ambulance arrives in the Dales. Presumably it’s for Tom, but can they save his life?

And who has called it? We know the Dingles are on their way to rescue Belle after Amelia let slip she was in danger, so will it be one of them?Or has Belle herself called for help from the emergency services? And will it lead to her arrest?
