Emmerdale star James Chase reveals all about Tom King’s comeuppance: ‘His mask has slipped, but there’s more to come’

Emmerdale star James Chase has spilled the beans about what happens as Tom King’s campaign of control against wife Belle Dingle comes to an end after months of abuse.

Nicola is convinced that the Dingles are right about Tom, and the rest of the village have turned against him, meaning Tom’s only allies are girlfriend Amelia and uncle Jimmy.

But even those loyal supporters are about to wonder if  Tom’s really as nice as he’s pretending to be!

We sat down for a chat with Emmerdale star James, who plays evil Tom, to find out what happens as his alter ego’s nice-guy persona begins to crumble.

    Persuading Nicola

With Nicola not budging, Tom’s determined to make her see that he’s an ‘innocent victim’ despite him being guilty of everything Belle’s accused him of!

So how is he going to talk Nicola into believing him? Well, he ropes Amelia in to help him!

“I think Tom is definitely pressured when he is trying to convince Nicola that he is genuine about everything that he is saying,” James tells us.

” I think in a weird way Tom does thrive under pressure and he enjoys it – as he gets an energy from it and feels quite invigorated and proud of himself when he does succeed in talking himself out of these scenarios.”

Tom plans to move away in Emmerdale

But despite Tom loving the drama, things don’t go well and Nicola is far too savvy to be convinced by his attempt to win her over with Amelia’s help.

And we know Tom doesn’t like it when things don’t go his way! So how does he react?

“I think Tom is surprised at first that he hasn’t managed to win her over because he has succeeded every other time and with every other person he has tried to convince before,” reveals James. “But I think he’s very quick to then move onto the next thing. Thinking how do I move on to a scenario where I am going to win?”

Tom’s next move is to suggest to Amelia they they move away together. What’s the plan there?

“It’s partly because he is hated in the village!” admits James. “But also it’s like when he went away to Wales with Belle, it was a way for him to fully control her and to have her to himself. Essentially the less people around that Amelia knows, the more she is going to have to rely on him and I think he quite enjoys that.”

Tom King [JAMES CHASE] slips in through the back door. Creeping around unnoticed, Tom discreetly steals one of Belle's tops before leaving.

Tom messes with Belle’s head in Emmerdale

With the walls closing in, Tom steps up his scheme to mess with Belle’s head. He steals one of her tops and gives it to Amelia. Creepy!

“It’s all about getting her in the worst state possible so he can selfishly benefit,” explains James. “He knows he’s grinding her down when he knows she’s seen Amelia in her clothes.”

And that’s when things fall apart! Belle tells Amelia that the jumper is hers, and Amelia asks questions.

“Tom is really cross,” says James.  “He berates Amelia immediately. His mask has slipped! He drags Amelia out into the street.”

    The mask is slipping!

But Jimmy’s there and he sees what Tom’s up to!  And with perfect timing, it’s when the police arrive, too, to question Tom.

He’s taken in for questioning by DS Foy. How does that go?

“He tries to keep his cards close to his chest because at the end of the day unless it’s actual evidence they have, Tom is going to deny it – as it’s in his interest to do that. In the interview room he attempts to manipulate the situation and tries to show to DS Foy he is actually the victim. Tom is doing that as much as possible to try and look innocent.”

And meanwhile, Jimmy is reeling from seeing Tom dragging Amelia out of the house. So will he realise Tom’s been lying?

“It’s only a matter of time,” says James. “I think Jimmy will have to start reading the writing on the wall at some point. Of course his uncle Jimmy doesn’t want to believe that Tom is a bad man but eventually Tom fears Jimmy will realise the truth.”

But despite all this, Tom still thinks he can get away with it even though the police are onto him!

“He has a sort of God complex,” says James. “Tom is cunning, conniving and clever – and I would kind of compare him to Littlefinger from Game of Thrones. He’s good at manipulation. He’s good at turning people on each other for his own benefit. He enjoys playing people and playing scenarios. He has no empathy or morality.”

Tom looked stressed in the interview room (Credit: ITV)
Tom is still playing the victim (Credit: ITV)

Tom plays the victim in Emmerdale

“There are things that have happened like the axe going in Tom’s back and of course he has eye witnesses of people who saw Belle pushing him over,” James reveals. “He thinks he’s got a lot of ammunition against her. He wants to win and believes he still can.”

It’s no secret that this storyline is coming to an end, and James will be saying goodbye to Emmerdale.

So how has the experience been?

“I feel very proud of the people I’ve worked with,” says James. “The scenes with the burning of the guy – and then squaring up to the Dingles was a lot of fun. It’s been a lot of fun working with Daisy (Campbell, who plays Amelia). It has been an amazing storyline, it has been intense – a real rollercoaster of emotions but it’s been amazing. I’m really proud of what we have done. Eden Taylor-Draper (AKA Belle) has been totally amazing. There is more to come!

As Tom threatens Paddy, when is he leaving? Everything we know about Tom King’s exit and exactly when justice will be served

In tonight’s episode of Emmerdale, Tom sets his sights on a different target – picking on Paddy in an attempt to get his job back. While it’s nice to see Tom go after someone who isn’t a young child or his grieving, mentally unwell ex-wife for once, it’s another nasty move from the village’s resident manipulator.

This comes as Rhona, Vanessa and Paddy suspended him from work over Belle’s allegations of abuse. All completely true, of course, but Tom continues to insist upon his innocence to anyone who will listen.

And he’s not taking news of his suspension lying down either, first threatening to sue for unfair dismissal, and now attempting to blackmail Paddy into relenting. Demanding his job back, Tom threatens to air all the vets’ dirty laundry in public.

It’s the latest development in a storyline which shows little sign of slowing down. And, with Tom repeatedly managing to evade the law (and Dingle retribution) his comeuppance has been a long time coming.

When – and how – will all this end?

    When is Tom leaving Emmerdale?

Soap bosses revealed earlier this month that the end of the storyline will air in December. Emmerdale producer Laura Shaw said: “When we first embarked on this journey we knew we wanted to show domestic abuse, coercive control and manipulation in all its guises.

“We knew from the outset that Belle would need some sort of closure on Tom and we know our Emmerdale audience always look forward to our villains getting their comeuppance. We don’t want to spoil the outcome of this story and reveal what will happen to Tom, but needless to say, Belle’s going to be in a much better place by this Christmas.”

    How will Tom King leave?

The exact circumstances behind Tom’s exit remain unknown, although fans have long speculated that he might exit the village in a coffin. While there are several ways he could get his comeuppance, many are hoping that he faces real justice – inside a prison cell.

What is known is that the story will involve Loose Woman and ex-Corrie star Denise Welch, who is joining the soap to bring Tom’s story to a close. Denise will play a woman on the jury when Belle takes Tom on in court.

TV stars Charles Dale and Jack Ellis will also join the all-star cast for the episode – an hour-long special which highlights the real-life voices of domestic violence survivors.

Emmerdale spoilers tonight: Tom blackmails Paddy to demand his job back

In Emmerdale spoilers tonight, vengeful Tom puts Paddy in a sticky situation when he threatens to air the vets’ dirty laundry in public. Tom is desperate to get his job back after being given his marching orders by Rhona and Vanessa.

But will he be successful in leveraging Paddy to get his way?

Tom losing his job came as Belle let the villagers know all about Tom’s campaign of abuse against her – both physical and mental. Recalling their awkward dinner party in which Belle seemed to be upset and not acting herself, Rhona believed her version of events in full.

Rhona and Vanessa then told Tom that they would be firing him from his position at the surgery once the police investigation is through. Never one to take things lying down, Tom has threatened to sue for unfair dismissal. However, nothing – not even a dodgy lawyer faking assault and smashing up his car – has managed to change her mind.

And, with Paddy also believing Belle and the Dingles’ version of events, Tom decides to take a different tack in trying to get his job back. Approaching Paddy, he threatens to spill all the surgery’s dirty secrets if Paddy doesn’t comply.

Will Paddy give in to Tom’s demands?

  • As Denise Welch joins Emmerdale, all of her other soap roles – from Natalie Barnes in Coronation Street to Alison Slater in EastEnders

As Denise Welch joins Emmerdale, all of her other soap roles – from Natalie Barnes in Coronation Street to Alison Slater in EastEnders

Denise Welch is joining Emmerdale as Belle’s domestic abuse nightmare finally comes to an end.

Denise will play a juror when Belle faces her abusive husband Tom in court.

Of course, telly icon Denise is best known now for her role as a panellist on Loose Women. But she’s no stranger to soaps, either, having appeared in Coronation Street, EastEnders and Hollyoaks.

Here’s the lowdown on her other soap roles.

Sally Webster [Sally Whittaker] and Natalie Horrocks [Denise Welch]

Natalie Barnes (also known as Natalie Horrocks) in Coronation Street

Coronation Street icon Natalie was the reason fan-fave couple Sally and Kevin split!

She took over son Tony Horrocks’s share of the garage, back in 1997. And she was soon having a steamy affair with Kevin Webster!

When Sally found out, the residents of Weatherfield were firmly on her side. Natalie was very unpopular for a while. But she got a job behind the bar at the Rovers, and began making friends locally.

She also found love with Street bad boy Des Barnes. The pair got married but just four weeks later, Des was killed when he was defending Tony from some drug dealers.

Natalie was devastated, but she picked herself up, and eventually bought the pub and became the latest in a long line of legendary Rovers landladies!

A romance with Vinny Sorrell followed, and everything seemed rosy, until Vinny ran off with Natalie’s sister, Debs Brownlow!

Natalie decided it was time to move on and she left Weatherfield for good. Later viewers discovered she’d had Vinny’s baby.

    Alison Slater in EastEnders

Back in 2016, Stacey Slater was shocked to discover that her late dad, Brian, had a whole other family that she, brother Sean, and mum Jean, had been kept in the dark about.

Stacey thought she was being stalked when Kyle came to the Square, but it turned out, he was her half-brother. There was a bit of trouble at first when Stacey didn’t believe Kyle was who he claimed to be.

But when he revealed he was born Sarah Slater and was transgender, the pair smoothed out their differences. Chef Kyle got a job with Ian Beale and settled into Walford.

Denise Welch played Alison Slater – Kyle’s mum. Alison had struggled to accept Kyle’s identity.

Hoping to build bridges, Stacey contacted Alison and invited her to Walford. But despite her efforts, Alison and Kyle couldn’t put their differences aside.

    Trish Minniver in Hollyoaks

Maxine and Mitzeee’s mum Trish was played by actress Paula Wolfenden for occasional appearances between 2010 and 2012. When she moved to Hollyoaks in 2021, the role was recast and Denise Welch joined the cast.

Dance teacher Trish had a rocky relationship with daughter Maxine. But when Maxine’s estranged dad Dave Chen-Williams arrived, things changed.

Dave’s rejection of Maxine, led to Trish telling him exactly how proud she was of her daughter. Maxine overheard and the pair made up.

Sadly, it was just minutes before Trish left the village to stay with Mitzeee in LA, but it was the perfect ending for the character!

    Steph Haydock in Waterloo Road

Denise played modern foreign languages teacher Steph from series one of Waterloo Road until series five. She came back for a guest appearance in series six.

And now it’s been reported that she’s due to make a comeback in the new season of the school-based show.

Denise Welch’s casting in the Belle plot prompts a very strong reaction among Emmerdale fans – and they are really not happy

The news that Denise Welch will be joining Emmerdale as part of Belle and Tom‘s abuse story has not gone down well with fans.

The year long story, which has seen Belle subjected to abuse by husband Tom, is thankfully coming to an end next month.

The conclusion will air in a special hour-long episode. However, fans are disappointed that Denise Welch will be part of it.

    Denise Welch to join Emmerdale

Loose Women panellist Denise Welch is no stranger to the world of soap. She has appeared in most of them in fact! Denise played Natalie Barnes in Coronation Street and Trish Minniver in Hollyoaks. She also had a guest stint in EastEnders as Alison Slater, as well as playing French teacher Steph Haydock in Waterloo Road.

It’s now been revealed that she’ll be appearing in Emmerdale. Speaking on Loose Women about the role, Denise said: “It’s a one-off one hour special and it’s the first time Emmerdale have ever done it. And for those of you who are fans of Emmerdale, there is a very powerful year-long story of domestic abuse. Which of course, appealed to me when I knew I’d be part of it because of [Loose Women’s domestic abuse campaign] Facing It Together, and this is a culmination of that story.

“So the episode takes place exclusively between the court and the jury and I am one of the head’s of the jury called Heidi.”

The special hour-long episode will highlight the real-life voices of domestic abuse victims and survivors. It will also feature Casualty star Charles Dale and Jack Ellis, who played Jim Fenner in Bad Girls. But it’s Denise’s casting that has prompted the strongest reaction.

    Fan reaction

Taking to the Emmerdale Insider Facebook page, fans of the show were quick to share their thoughts. And most expressed disappointment at the news. They accused the soap of “scraping the barrel”.

“What the hell do they want her in it for?” asked one fan. Another added: “Her voice is worse than Mandy’s.”

A third viewer wrote: “Hope not, she spoils everything she goes in.” A fourth echoed the sentiment and wrote: “She will spoil Emmerdale.”

Other fans threatened to stop watching the soap, with one saying: “Don’t make me stop watching something I have watched forever.” Others were straight to the point, simply writing, “Can’t stand her.”

Will she win Emmerdale fans round?

    Will justice be done?

EXCLUSIVE: As Emmerdale announces end to Tom and Belle storyline fans insist he must go to prison

Emmerdale has announced when Belle and Tom King’s abuse storyline will conclude – and now fans hope he goes to prison.

Fans have been hoping that the storyline will end for quite some time, becoming frustrated with the endless cycle of Tom getting away with his behaviour.

But, there’s finally some hope! The end is nigh. And, viewers want justice for Belle, hoping that it comes in one form in particular!

Emmerdale confirms end for Tom and Belle storyline

This December, the end of Belle and Tom’s abuse storyline will air. A special hour long episode will highlight the real-life voices of domestic abuse victims and survivors.

The episode will see the abuse storyline reach its end although the final outcome of the storyline is still being kept a secret for now. But, a ‘comeuppance’ of sorts and ‘closure’ for Belle is certainly on the cards.

Emmerdale Producer Laura Shaw shared: “When we first embarked on this journey we knew we wanted to show domestic abuse, coercive control and manipulation in all its guises.

“We knew from the outset that Belle would need some sort of closure on Tom and we know our Emmerdale audience always look forward to our villains getting their comeuppance. Fans beg for justice for Belle in the form of Tom prison punishment

With a comeuppance for Tom promised, fans are hoping that this will bring with it justice for Belle. Viewers really want Tom to face up to and pay for his treatment of Belle (and, we do too!)

Tom’s punishment has been a long time coming, but it looks to finally be just around the corner! (We all cheered.)

But, whilst Tom could reach his comeuppance in several ways, most fans are hoping for Tom to get sent to prison.

When asked by Emmerdale Insider whether Tom should go to prison or be killed, 71% of people said that Tom must go to prison and pay for his crimes, providing justice for Belle.

Fans on X also expressed a similar desire. One person said: “I’ll say it again. They’d better not just kill Tom off! We need to see the smug look wiped from his face as he’s led down to a prison cell!”

Another person added: “Lydia deserved justice for Craig. He should be in prison. Belle deserved justice for Tom. He should be in prison. These storylines should showcase justice not death as the answer.”

A third viewer finished: “I don’t believe for one minute that Tom was attacked, he’s just wanting attention coz Jimmy didn’t give him any when he said he was getting nasty comments online!! He needs to be put in prison asap!!”

Well, a comeuppance is coming one way or another. But, which form will this take?

Emmerdale confirms ending to Belle and Tom’s abuse storyline with a special episode next month

Belle Dingle in Emmerdale has been suffering dreadful abuse from husband Tom since before their wedding early this year.

But now Emmerdale has confirmed her ordeal is almost over.

Fans will be relieved to know the show is preparing to tell Belle and Tom’s final chapter. And there isn’t long to wait.

    Belle’s bravery

Belle bravely reported Tom to the police last month. It came after she snapped following months of domestic abuse and coercive controlling behaviour at his hands. Belle was so terrified he would kill her, she hit him with an axe.

And though Tom’s been twisting and manipulating those around him, including girlfriend Amelia and uncle Jimmy, it seems his mask is slipping.

    Special Emmerdale episode for Belle

Emmerdale will air a special hour-long episode this December. It will highlight the real-life voices of domestic abuse victims and survivors.

And with the special episode, the stage will be set for Belle’s domestic-abuse storyline to reach its conclusion.

“When we first embarked on this journey we knew we wanted to show domestic abuse, coercive control and manipulation in all its guises,” said Emmerdale Producer Laura Shaw.

Real-life stories just like Belle in Emmerdale

Because the episode tells real-life stories, the writers at Emmerdale have worked closely with New Beginnings Peer Support – a domestic abuse charity.

“When Emmerdale explained they hoped to include the real life testimonies of domestic abuse victims and survivors within these scenes we knew it would be the truest way for them to authentically close this storyline,” explained Lindsay Oliver, the CEO of the charity. “We hope these final episodes will continue to raise awareness about domestic abuse, controlling relationships and the fact there is help out there.”

Jimmy will catch Tom hurting Amelia, fan theory predicts

A new Emmerdale fan theory has predicted that Jimmy will see the light about Tom King’s awful behaviour – when he witnesses him hurting Amelia.

This comes after Tom briefly showed his true colours to Amelia earlier in the week, snapping at her as his frustration with the Dingles grew. Tom may have faked a beating (thanks to his eager-to-please solicitor), but the Dingles’ victimisation is very real.

    Emmerdale: Tom’s treatment of Amelia

As they unveiled a ‘Guy’ for the bonfire that was dressed just like him, Tom saw red. He snapped at the Dingles and then, as Amelia tried to calm him down, he exploded at her too.

Amelia was shocked by Tom’s behaviour and, for a while, it looked as though the penny had finally dropped. However, last night (Wednesday, October 7), she let Jimmy talk her back on side – and accepted Tom’s apology.

With Amelia and Jimmy still firmly in his corner, Tom is doing a sterling job of keeping his supporters on track. But how will Jimmy find out when the truth does come out?

Emmerdale fans predict that Jimmy will witness Tom hurting Amelia

As the episode aired, fans took to social media to share their thoughts. And one viewer wondered whether Jimmy might get to see Tom’s abusive tendencies firsthand.

“I’m beginning to think that Jimmy will catch Tom beating her up, and that’s how it ends,” suggested one fan.

However, when Tom is finally caught out, one thing’s for sure – Amelia and Jimmy are going to regret their naivety where he’s concerned.

“If something does happen to Amelia I hope Jimmy realises that it’s his enabling that led to it because he practically guilt tripped that girl into getting back with Tom,” said one fan.

“Even now Jimmy isn’t convinced about Tom. C’mon Jimmy open your eyes,” begged another.

“Beginning to think Belle had a real premonition of Tom killing Amelia,” another viewer suggested.

Will Jimmy and Amelia see the light before it’s too late?

What happened in Emmerdale tonight: Amelia and Jimmy forgave Tom and we have lost all hope of them ever seeing sense

Emmerdale tonight dealt us another blow when Jimmy and Amelia took Tom’s side after his outburst last night. Even Rodney was sympathetic to Tom – enough is enough.

Meanwhile, Billy was forced to confess to Dawn and sulked when she took control of the situation. But will he go along with her plan?

    Tom manipulated again

Jimmy is STILL sympathising with Tom. He’s STILL on Tom’s side. Even Rodney offered Tom some support. What is wrong with them?

Jimmy then tentatively asked if Amelia was all right and suggested she was quite upset about the night before. Tom turned it round (again) and said he knew he shouldn’t have got angry. He manipulated the situation suggesting he now felt like Jimmy and Amelia were now turning on him. Jimmy, of course, rushed to insist he was still on his side. Sigh. And the most stupid man in the village award goes to…

Amelia was a bit tougher to crack. Jimmy went in to bat for Tom when he saw her and said he was worried about Tom and there’s no way Tom would ever want to purposely upset her.

Amelia then relented and let Tom come over. He did his best puppy dog eyes and apologised for overreacting. He’d apparently been awake all night worried about Amelia. And she actually bought it and even ended up feeling sorry for him.

We cannot take much more of this.

Billy was given what-for in Emmerdale tonight

Billy was training and being miserable, avoiding Dawn and trying to keep his secret. When he returned from his run, Dawn was frantic, saying Clemmie and Lucas were missing. She has looked everywhere and they were nowhere to be seen.

Billy refused to call the police and confessed it was to do with Jade. Confused Dawn didn’t have time to press as Clemmie and Lucas ran round the corner. Jade didn’t have them and now Dawn wanted answers. Whoops Billy!

So he then confessed what he’s been up to. Dawn couldn’t believe he would be this stupid. Doesn’t know her husband very well, does she?!

Dawn then called Ross over to sort out the mess. She has a plan – they are going to fix the fight. She didn’t give Billy a choice, she said he was the one taking the fall and he had to drop.

Billy was not happy and decided it was because Dawn had feelings for Ross and wanted him to lose. But Dawn gave it to him with both barrels – she wasn’t messing and we quite like this side of her.

But something tells us Billy’s ego is so bruised he’s not giving this fight up without, er, a fight.

    Also in Emmerdale tonight…

    Liam and Chas were loved-up

Liam crept in to the Woolpack back room with flowers for Chas. Half of him is ready to throw caution to the wind and tell people – he’s even bought new aftershave and a new shirt for the occasion.

Things still seem a bit awkward between them as they started kissing. And then Chas suddenly pulled away.

As they sat together talking things through, Liam said he would wait as long as she wanted to. But Chas is worried about what she looks like after the cancer surgery. Liam insisted there was no pressure at all, he was here for her. They both confessed to feeling safe with each other, but Chas still isn’t ready. Liam was very understanding and they did end up in bed. It feels like there might be a real future for these two – if Emmerdale don’t go and mess yet another couple up, that is.

    Aaron and John fell out

John and Aaron still need to talk, but John was avoiding it. However he eventually plucked up the courage to ask Aaron to open up to him. But Aaron was defensive and insisted he couldn’t deal with this now.

He said he did care about John and wanted him, but didn’t want to talk about his past. John just couldn’t shake that niggling feeling though, and pushed a bit too hard about Aaron’s feelings – insulting Robert in the process. Talking really isn’t their strong point, is it?
