What’s wrong with Moira Dingle? 5 theories on why she’s acting so strangely from menopause to a brain tumour

Moira Dingle has been acting very strangely lately. She’s aggressive, saying some awful things to her family – especially husband Cain, she threw a glass at the wall, fell asleep during the day and strangest of all, she doesn’t seem to remember any of these incidents properly.

    So what’s going on?!

Well, it won’t surprise you to know that the Emmerdale fans have been busy coming up with some ideas about what’s up with Moira Dingle.

And we reckon they’re all pretty plausible.

Here’s our round-up of the best theories about what’s up with Moira.

    1. Dementia

Moira’s forgetfulness could be symptoms of dementia, some fans believe. It’s definitely up there among the theories with legs, but let’s not forget Emmerdale have done a high-profile dementia storyline before. Ashley Thomas’s struggle with vascular dementia was less than ten years ago. Would they really repeat a similar storyline so soon?

    2. Menopause

Since Davina McCall tackled the topic, it seems everyone’s talking about menopause. Emmerdale has already taken on one female hormones story with teenage Cathy Hope’s Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder. And Bernice’s menopause was also covered in recent years. But it’s definitely something to think about.

We can’t help thinking though that Moira’s symptoms are so extreme that instead of raising awareness about the menopause, such a storyline could end up terrifying every woman over a certain age!

    3. Brain tumour

Tragic Lola Pearce lost her life to an aggressive brain tumour in EastEnders last year earning praise from viewers for the performances the actors involved gave. Could Emmerdale bosses be hoping for a similarly successful story if Moira is seriously ill?

“She had a very dazed look about her on Thursday’s episode,” one concerned fan pointed out. And they added: “Her mood is very erratic.”

    4. Is too much booze what’s wrong with Moira in Emmerdale?

Moira’s been hitting the bottle hard recently, leading some viewers to be convinced she’s got a drinking problem.

“The way she’s been knocking back the scotch lately I’d say it’s obvious,” said one confident fan.

But could Moira’s drinking be a symptom rather than a cause? Is she on the booze as a way of coping with something else?

    5. Is Adam returning?

This is a bit of a cheat as it’s not a reason for Moira’s odd behaviour, but it could be a silver lining to Moira’s cloud! Could her struggle with whatever she’s battling bring her son back to the village? Let’s hope so!

Though, Adam returning could see Moira banged up for killing Emma Barton, so perhaps it wouldn’t be a good thing for him to come back after all!

  • ‘What’s wrong with Moira?’ fans question as they fear something is seriously wrong over major character change

‘What’s wrong with Moira?’ fans question as they fear something is seriously wrong over major character change

Something is going on with Moira in Emmerdale and fans are starting to wonder what – frankly, so are we!

Yes, she’s always been a feisty farmer not afraid to speak her mind. And yes, we’ve always loved that she’ll stand up to husband Cain when necessary. BUT, she’s somehow gone from strong women who we champion to very scary psycho, physically and verbally abusing Cain and others around her and, honestly, worrying us greatly.

So what is wrong with Moira?

Well, that’s exactly what fans have been asking too – and even Cain asked it last night when he told her: “I don’t like it when you’re like this, what is wrong with you?”

Viewers are starting to come up with theories over the major personality change for Moira. But what could it be caused by?

Complete character change for Moira in Emmerdale

Her personality transplant has been building for weeks. With her son Matty in prison after being set-up for a crime that was accidental self-defence, she has been worried sick. Matty was having a very hard time inside due to being trans.

Moira was desperate to get him out and insisted Cain should be doing more. She aggressively belittled him, told him the old Cain would never let this lie, and that he was weak and pathetic. And it came a mere weeks after he had had a break down over the old Cain having gone and Moira telling him she liked the new Cain. Make it make sense, love!

As her bullying and belittling continued, last week, Moira almost punched Cain when she saw him helping Samson. She told him not to come home as he was training the man who put her son behind bars to survive in prison himself.

Then this week, she went mad at him again when he accused her of calling the police and having Samson arrested for assault on Josh as revenge. She flipped and threw a glass at him, which hit the wall and smashed. She then viciously spat the whole family would be better off without him.

As he remained remarkably calm when confronting her the following day, Moira told him: “You’re the one being difficult lately, not me.” She looked properly deranged and like she really believed that as she sipped at her tea as if challenging him to come for her.

    Fans react to Moira change

So what’s going on here? Is it built up anger and frustration? Or it is something more serious? Some viewers think it must be a medical issue making Moira act with so much rage.

“I’m seriously considering something is medically wrong with Moira because she was never this level of constantly annoying,” said one on social media.

A second said: “Is it going to turn out to be a medical condition for Moira? She just acts weird sometimes, like she’s forgetful, it was like she didn’t remember, throwing the glass at Cain.”

Another queried: “Is Emmerdale going down the menopause route for Moira? It’s the only way to explain her rage and personality change?!”

“I’m starting to think Moira might be ill or something cos why is she acting like this? Has she forgotten she pushed Emma off a bridge to her death?” asked one more.

Others agreed with the menopause suggestion, but some were concerned it could be something even more serious.

“Could Moira have early on-set dementia or a brain tumour with her forgetting things?” suggested one.

More viewers felt it was a plot device to drive Cain into someone else’s arms – namely Ella Forster. Cain has been kind to Ella since he found out she was a child killer. He was one of the only ones who gave her the time of day – and continues to do so.

“Am I the only one who can see where this angry Moira storyline is going? Cain and Ella affair,” insisted one fan.

A second agreed: “Moira is turning into a psycho abuser like Tom, so it’ll be Cain off with Ella.”

Emmerdale tonight: Samson sent down, Moira turning into abusive Tom and Noah caught out

Emmerdale tonight saw a tearful goodbye for Samson Dingle who was sent to prison. It caused a ripple affect throughout the village as several couples faced splitsville over the situation. Why they’re letting Samson come between them is beyond us, but hey, that’s what’s happening!

Pollard also confessed to Victoria and she confided in Aaron before coming up with a plan. Meanwhile, things were tense between Kim and Will. Still.

Here’s a recap of all the action in Emmerdale on Tuesday August 6.

Samson sent down in Emmerdale tonight

After his arrest for assault Samson had been at the police station all night. But he soon called with good news – the police have got Josh on Eric’s video doorbell and he said enough to incriminate himself. He has been arrested and charged too. Not quite the news Sam was hoping for, but better than nothing.

Just before the ad break, Lydia arrived at the pub with news: the judge sentenced Samson to four years. It’s even more than the solicitor was expecting, but Cain‘s sure if he keeps his nose clean he can get out sooner. Moira just smirked.

Lydia accused Moira of calling the police. But we’re about to find out who really called them…

At the end of the episode Sam and Samson had a moment together before Samson was taken away. Sam told his son he’s proud of him as Samson cried. They had one last hug, shared their love for each other and Samson was gone leaving Sam sobbing in the interview room as the credits rolled.

So that’s all we will see of Samson for now, but his presence is still being felt around the village.

    What is wrong with Moira?

It’s the question on everyone’s lips and one even Cain finally asks tonight when he tells Moira: “I don’t like it when you’re like this, what is wrong with you?”

After her glass-throwing incident yesterday in which she spat the whole family would be better off without him, Cain was remarkably calm when greeting his wife at the breakfast table. They agreed to pretend yesterday never happened – that’s one more free pass for Moira after she nearly punched him last week.

“You’re the one being difficult lately, not me,” Moira told him with a psycho glint in her eye. Beg to differ Moira, you are losing the plot! What is going on with her? She’s giving abusive Tom a run for his money, that’s for sure.

Amelia looks fed up and Noah glum at the Woolpack bar

Amelia obsessed over Samson in Emmerdale tonight

Amelia suddenly really cares about Samson. We mean really cares about the guy who ditched her and wanted nothing to do with her or their daughter. The guy who tried to blackmail Noah into essentially buying Esther off him. That guy is who Amelia is desperately concerned about, looking glum and sulky over at the Woolpack bar. Riiiiight.

As she worried about Esther’s future with her dad behind bars (to confirm that’s the dad who abandoned them and wanted nothing to do with his daughter), Noah was trying to say he’ll be a dad to Esther. Ungrateful Amelia told him Esther needs Samson. Again: not quite sure why, she hasn’t needed Samson for the first 18 months of her life so why all of a sudden can Esther not live without him now?

Later on, Amelia was still shouting about it. She was honestly acting like the love of her life has gone to prison and will never get out. When did Samson even see Esther? We blinked and missed it.

However, it soon turned out Noah called the police to report Samson for assault! He appealed to Amelia that both Josh and Samson need to be kept off the streets. But Amelia dumped Noah – who actually has stepped up and cared for her. But hey, Amelia knows best, even though this makes no sense.

    Pollard confessed to Victoria

Pollard finally told Victoria he was behind her sacking. She was shocked and upset and insisted she could never forgive him, despite his argument it’s because he feels like everyone treats him differently due to his Parkinson’s.

After confiding in Aaron it turns out the never forgive him thing wasn’t really true as she’s already ready to try and forgive him. Aaron advised her to use the information to get her job back and get a pay rise, which got Vic’s cogs turning.

    Also in Emmerdale tonight…

Things were still tense between Kim and Will. Will wanted to draw a line, Kim wanted to face up to it. Stalemate.

Will later confided in Jimmy who suggested he ‘fess up and repair the relationship. Come clean to Kim Tate? Don’t listen to him Will, you’ll be in whatever ditch Rose is in before you can say ‘sorry’.

Meanwhile, Billy told them both to start helping more. Suddenly Team Rose, he said his mother-in-law at least helped around the house. Can’t see Kim donning her Marigolds any time soon!

Sam asks Aaron to give Samson a pep talk about life in prison. Cain overhears them chatting and gets to Samson before Aaron has chance.

    3. Cain steps in to advise Samson

Not long after, Sam comes across Cain battering and goading Samson. It is revealed that Cain is giving Samson some training for prison, as he believes the other inmates will make Samson’s time in jail difficult.

Samson asks Cain to teach him to fight dirty in a bid to get himself fully prepared for what’s to come during his time in prison. However, the pair are soon spotted by Moira.

Review of the week: Belle’s terror, Tom’s abuse worsens, and a handful of change goes very far indeed!

There is a lot to review in this week’s Emmerdale, even though most of the episodes focused on one storyline – Tom and Belle and their disastrous trip to Wales.

They set off, with Belle unaware that Tom was planning a new life for them in the isolated rural setting. Meanwhile, Charity and Cain were worried about Belle and were trying to track her down.

Here’s what we thought of the dramatic events in this week’s Emmerdale review.

Outside as the sun rises Belle King [EDEN TAYLOR-DRAPER] and Tom King [JAMES CHASE] are excited to have arrived at the holiday cottage.

Claustrophobic and tense in our Emmerdale review

As Belle and Tom set off on their holiday, things already felt tense. Tom had hidden Belle’s phone and he was being Very Nice Indeed. But we know now that his mood can change in an instant.

And we weren’t wrong. The episode focusing on the newlyweds in the isolated holiday cottage was tense and dramatic. The claustrophobic feeling of the cottage closing in on Belle as Tom locked her inside – and poor Piper outside – had us holding our breath.

Tom’s manipulation stepped up over the days in the cottage. He was gaslighting Belle, lying about his job interview, and even claiming to have taken an overdose.

The passing days, with each morning beginning with the toast being buttered by Belle, precisely as Tom liked it, was a clever touch. Especially on the final day when her bandaged hand made her awkward, and the toast was burned.

Tom chasing Belle as she fled was thrilling and the relief when she managed to get on the bus was immense! Especially as a whole busload of passengers saw what Tom was like as he roared his fury at the departing bus!

    Going downhill

But after the brilliance of the cottage episode, things went downhill quite fast.

Belle appeared in Emmerdale clutching Piper, with no explanation as to how she’d got there with no money or phone. No one so much as asked how she’d done it. We were left wondering how her handful of change that was just enough to pay her bus fare, stretched to a train ticket back to Yorkshire.

She also didn’t seem to have scratch on her, despite Tom whacking her round the face hard enough to send her sprawling on to the floor of the cottage.

Changing direction in our Emmerdale review

When Charity and Cain broke into Tom and Belle’s house earlier in the week, they were all over Tom’s abusive behaviour. They clocked the cameras, the book detailing all Belle’s spends, Belle’s phone hidden in a drawer and they realised all was not as it seemed with the pair.

BUT as soon as they caught up with Tom at the cottage and found out Belle had an abortion, they totally changed their stance. Suddenly Tom was the put upon, martyred husband, while Belle was the baddie for having a termination. And that’s a stance that left us feeling a little uncomfortable. It’s 2024, people. No woman has to stay pregnant if she doesn’t want to – even a Dingle woman – and no one should judge her for that decision.

Emmerdale review Belle pushes Tom to the ground and screams at him in Emmerdale

    Glimmers of hope

With Cain and Charity now firmly Team Tom, things looked bleak for Belle. But she’s managed to find enough strength to tell her abusive husband she doesn’t want to be with him. That’s one positive.

And she started to tell Vinny what had happened. Though when he pointed out it was abusive, she denied it. Vinny’s a smart cookie though, and – as he himself said – he knows what it’s like to be abused. Fingers crossed he’s a friend for Belle in her time of need.

Let’s hope Tom doesn’t manage to manipulate things even further in his favour as this storyline progresses.

  • Charity and Cain have gone from heroes to ‘I wanna kick their heads in’ in one episode, scream fans

Charity and Cain have gone from heroes to ‘I wanna kick their heads in’ in one episode, scream fans

Emmerdale fans have turned on Charity and Cain after last night’s episode saw them side with Tom. It was a real what the heck? moment when Charity especially started to question Belle’s side of things.

Earlier in the week had shown so much promise as Cain declared: “He’s a dead man.” But one glare of those manipulative eyes from Tom and he was suddenly siding with the devil.

And it left fans – and us – absolutely seething.

Charity and Cain are seriously worried after finding blood on the door
He’s a dead man, is he Cain? Doesn’t look like it from where we’re standing (Credit: ITV)

Charity and Cain side with Tom in Emmerdale

Things had started so well – finally, finally, someone was on to the abuse. Charity knew what Tom was, she even compared him to DI Bails, her own abuser.

Determined Charity was not going to let it lie and then broke into Tom and Belle’s house with Cain on Tuesday July 23. They were all over Tom’s abusive behaviour. They clocked the cameras, the book detailing all Belle’s spends, Belle’s phone hidden in a drawer and they finally realised something was very, very wrong.

Heading straight to Wales they found the cottage the couple were staying in and saw it had been trashed. They even found blood on the walls.

“Whatever he’s done, he’s a dead man,” declared Cain. YES! we all screamed. Tom was going to get his comeuppance and Belle was going to be saved. Right? Right?

    Wrong.

After Wednesday’s flashback episode (July 24) showed what had really happened during Tom and Belle’s week away, viewers were delighted Belle had finally escaped her abusive husband.

As Thursday’s ep opened, Tom came down the stairs to find Cain and Charity in the house. He spun them a tale about Belle fleeing after an argument. He then dropped the bombshell she had had an abortion not a miscarriage. This piece of information seemed to cause Charity and Cain to do a complete 180 and believe Tom that Belle was the one with the problem and he was the innocent, injured party.

Even when Belle said Tom had hidden her phone, Charity, who had found the phone and declared Tom must have hidden it, said: “Why would he do that?” WHAT?  How has her weeks of suspicion and evidence building, turned into her total backing of Tom?

Belle looks crazy-eyed as she begs Charity and Cain to listen to her in Emmerdale
Belle is undoubtedly terrified yet Cain and Charity still believe Tom (Credit: ITV)

    Fans fume

The episode left fans absolutely furious – and we are totally with them. Why on earth would Charity in particular believe Tom over Belle?

“Everything was going well until you managed to give Cain and Charity a lobotomy in making them all of a sudden believe Tom’s lies,” fumed one. They added: “From being the abuser to being the abused ABSOLUTELY [BLEEP] RIDICULOUS YOU STUPID PRODUCERS AND SCRIPT WRITERS.”

Another said: “Really disappointed how quickly Cain and Charity believed Tom! Charity just completely forgot all the red flags she had spotted before?”

“How can Charity go from thinking Belle’s being abused to believing the [bleep] that’s coming out of TomTit’s mouth? Incredibly frustrating,” shared a third.

A fourth agreed: “How has Charity been swayed so quickly after her adamant belief in Tom’s horrible nature not 24 hours prior? Including the fact she was convinced that a member of Belle’s mental health team – intimately aware of her health – was not trusting of Tom.”

“Cain and Charity have gone from being my heroes to I wanna kick them both in the head in one episode. Wake the [Bleep] up. ESP you Charity,” raged someone else.

A sixth also said: “Charity was wholly convinced Tom was hurting Belle, yet now Belle’s trying to tell her the same thing she doesn’t believe her!!! Don’t [bleep] me off.”

They’re about as angry as we are. Sort this out, Emmerdale. Quick.

    “They’re not moving!”

He added that he’d also tried to call Tom, but there was no answer.

Moira concluded: “She’ll be fine, I’m sure, don’t worry.”

Now, we all know what a sentence like that means in Soapland!

Later Charity spotted a woman knocking at Belle and Tom’s door, who eventually confided that she is Rachel, Belle’s care coordinator from the community mental health team.

Belle had missed a routine appointment, Rachel explained, so she wanted to check in on her.

When Charity mentioned she was worried about Belle, she noted by Rachel’s face that she was too.

With that, Charity told Cain they needed to go and look round the couple’s cottage for clues as to their whereabouts.

“I’m breaking in, I’ve got a really crappy feeling about this, Cain,” she declared.

Once inside the house, baffled Charity gasped: “Get a load of this, door and window censors everywhere – what’s he need this for?”

She then found a notebook listing everything Belle and Tom spend, including on coffees, flowers and birthday cards.

“Do you reckon he’s quizzing her on everything she spends? Why do I get the feeling he’s running the show here?” Charity added.

When they then found an address for a cottage in Pembroke – and Belle’s phone – Charity was adamant they get to Wales, pronto.

Worse findings followed at the Welsh cottage... including blood on the door. “What’s he done to her?” Charity asked, panic rising in her voice.

Cain replied: “Whatever he’s done, he’s a dead man.”

Liam struggled with Ella’s pregnancy news

Across the village, Chas paid Liam a visit.

“Chas I owe you an apology, finding out the way you did, ” he said, referencing Ella’s pregnancy.

“Granted it was a bit of a shock but not as much as for you, I’m guessing,” she replied.

Liam admitted that he was feeling like he was slowly drowning and wondering, “Why me?”

He added: “How am I supposed to get my head around any of this? It’s not just the emotional minefield of being a dad again after Leanna, it’s doing it all with her.

“I’ve told her we’re over for good, there’s no chance we are ever getting back together.”

“I can barely bring myself to look at her, truth be told.”

He continued: “Losing Leanna was the worst thing to happen to me, the idea of being that vulnerable again, but in a worse set of circumstances… it terrifies me.

“She had no right to do this, she said she was on the pill. How do I know she didn’t plan this, get pregnant on purpose?”

Then he got to the crux of what’s bothering him most, asking Chas: “And I’m aware this situation with Ella probably also rules me out of other relationships?”

    “Probably,” Chas replied.

Later, Tracy ran into Ella and accused her of lying about being pregnant and ruining Liam’s life.

Ella protested: “I need to speak to him and explain, I haven’t done this on purpose, I’ve not done this to trap him.”

But when she knocked on Liam’s door, he hid inside staring at a photograph of his late daughter…

Is Belle dead? Blood on the door, no sign of her or Tom – it’s not looking good

Belle Dingle has gone missing in Emmerdale and Charity and Cain are worried after finding a trashed holiday cottage and blood where she was supposed to be – but is Belle dead?

Viewers know, and Charity suspects, Belle is in an abusive marriage with Tom King. But as the young couple ventured off on their holiday to ‘repair’ their relationship, something terrible seems to have happened.

Tomorrow night we will find out exactly what as flashbacks air to Tom and Belle’s week away. But for now, we’re left worried. Seriously worried. Is Belle dead? Is Tom dead? Are they both dead? What has happened?

Belle and Tom disappear in Emmerdale

Heading off on their break without telling anyone, Belle and Tom have got Charity concerned. Meanwhile, an email to the vets has exposed Tom’s new job prospects and Belle also isn’t answering her phone.

She doesn’t actually have her phone, it turns out, because Tom stashed it in the drawer before they left and she couldn’t find it. Incidentally, it seems to be in the same drawer she hid her birth control pills, so maybe that should be dubbed the ‘official hiding place’ in their house and be the first place anyone looks.

Anyway, someone who did look in there was Charity after she persuaded Cain something wasn’t right. She’s told him Tom reminds her of Bails, and after she discovered Belle has not been attending her mental health appointments, decided to break in to their house.

Cain helped her and they were surprised to see the level of surveillance equipment inside. They also found Belle’s phone and Tom’s budget book showing his records of everything Belle spends.

It was enough to sound alarm bells and the pair hot-footed it to Wales to the cottage Belle and Tom were staying in.

    Is Belle dead in Emmerdale?

The sight that greeted them was not a welcome one. The cottage was in darkness. It had been completely smashed up, “What the hell?” questioned Charity as they found the light switch.

Charity then discovered Belle’s discarded jumper and knew they were in the right place. But there was no sign of Belle.

As Cain looked around growing increasingly worried, Charity shouted: “What is that? Is that blood?” as the camera showed red stains on the door.

    “Where is she?” Charity asked.

“Whatever he’s done, he’s a dead man,” said Cain. YES! This is what we’ve been waiting for.

But is he already a dead man? Is it Belle’s blood or Tom’s? Has Belle lashed out at last and done her abusive husband in? Or has Tom hurt Belle so badly she won’t survive?

    What happens next?

Tomorrow night (Wednesday July 24) flashbacks will show exactly what has happened between Tom and Belle.

When they first arrive at the cottage Belle is hopeful they will get back on track. But it’s not long before Tom starts mocking and manipulating. And when she then overhears him arranging to rent the cottage for longer than agreed, she is confused.

As the rest of the week unfolds, what should be a lovely, romantic getaway, turns into a terrifying ordeal for Belle and Piper. Will she escape Tom’s clutches? Or is this the end of Belle?

Spoilers: Cain trains Samson for prison but Moira takes things too far

In Emmerdale spoilers for next week Samson gets an idea of what life behind bars is going to be like from uncle and prison veteran Cain Dingle. But when Moira steps in, things get very messy indeed.

In fact, before too long, Moira is taking things way too far. Can anyone stop her from dishing out her own form of punishment on Samson?

    Samson unfazed by prison life

So viewers know Moira will never forgive Samson for lying about the stabbing and putting her son Matty behind bars. Being trans, Matty had a particularly awful time inside and it was only when Lydia realised Samson was lying and that Matty had stabbed him in self-defence, did she put her foot down and insist Samson go to the police.

Sam was fuming as he wanted his son to do a runner instead of coming clean. But fortunately Samson finally found his morals – and although he refused to dob in ‘friend’ Josh, he got Matty out with his new version of the story.

However what it does mean is that Samson will be going to prison. He has his plea hearing coming up and as he’s pleading guilty is fully aware a stint inside is a definite. He says he’s fine with it and seems rather chilled about the whole situation.

Worried Lydia realises he’s got no idea of the reality of life behind bars, so Sam asks Aaron to give Samson a pep talk about life in prison.

Cain beats Samson in Emmerdale spoilers

Cain overhears and decides to take matters into his own hands. Sam soon arrives home to find Cain battering and goading Samson. But then it falls into place – Cain isn’t giving him a hiding, he’s merely helping to train him for jail.

Cain is clear that the other prisoners will make mincemeat of measly weasel Samson, so Samson begs for help. He needs to know how to stand up for himself and how to fight dirty. He’s come to the right person!

    Moira goes too far

As Cain sets to work with Sam and Lydia watching on, Moira approaches and is not best pleased. In fact she’s downright furious to see her husband fraternising and larking about with the lying toad who put her boy behind bars.

She storms over and says as much, calling Samson a thug and grabbing his face. As she pulls at him harder and harder it’s clear the red mist has descended and Moira is about to go too far…

Can Samson fight her off? Or will Cain have to step in and choose between his nephew and his wife?
