7 Unlikely friendships in Emmerdale: From Kim and Seth to Cain and Liam, those surprisingly successful double acts

Some of the best and most enduring friendships in Emmerdale are those between two unlikely characters. On paper you wouldn’t put them together as mates, but on screen they shine.

The secret to these brilliant partnerships is chemistry. Backgrounds, age, gender, personality, none of these things have to match when it comes to a creating solid friendship.

Here are seven surprising bonds, both past and present, that the fans took into their hearts…

Kim and Seth on her wedding day in Emmerdale

Emmerdale unlikely friendships: Kim Tate and Seth Armstrong

Seth Armstrong and Kim Tate were the definition of an unlikely pairing, but their bond stood the test of time. As lady of the manor, Kim employed Seth to work as a gamekeeper at Home Farm. But what began as a business arrangement turned into a proper friendship.

When Kim’s lover Dave Glover perished in a blaze at Home Farm, Seth defended her to the locals. He helped her get through the loss of her soulmate, and told everyone else to mind their own business.

Their sweetest moment came in 1998 when Kim asked Seth if he would give her away at her wedding to Steve Marchant. He looked pleased as punch as he walked Kim down the aisle to husband number two.

Kim departed the Dales the following year, but she never forgot her old friend. And when Seth sadly passed away in 2003 Kim paid for a crate of alcohol to be sent to his funeral.

    Cain Dingle and Liam Cavanagh

Cain’s never really been one for mates, which is probably what makes his friendship with Dr Liam so adorable.

It all began back in 2021 when Liam was grieving the loss of his daughter, Leanna. The teen was one of serial killer Meena Jutla‘s victims and her death left Liam utterly bereft. Unable to listen to folks’ cliched sympathies, Liam needed someone to sit in silence with over a beer. And that’s what he found with Cain.

Liam returned the favour last year when Cain needed a supportive ear in the aftermath of Moira’s brain tumour diagnosis.

But it’s not all doom and gloom – Cain and Liam are genuinely really funny together without even trying. The perfect mixture of posh and rough.

    Long live their bromance!

Emmerdale unlikely friendships: Kim Tate and Lydia Dingle

You couldn’t get more chalk and cheese than ice queen Kim and warm-hearted Lydia, but somehow it just works.

The ladies hit it off after Lydia started cleaning Kim’s house and have gone on to forge a firm friendship. Theirs is a honest relationship, and Lydia is one of the few people that gets to see Kim’s more vulnerable side.

Sam’s wife has also helped Kim loosen up and have fun. Who remembers when Lydia organised a Neil Diamond tribute act for Kim’s hen do so she could get back to her working class roots?

But it’s not all been fun and laughter. Their friendship almost collapsed after Kim confessed to Lydia that she’d left rapist Craig Reed to die after he was trampled by her horse. Lydia was initially disgusted with Kim for not calling the police, but found it in her heart to forgive her.

Val and Finn with their friends in The Woolpack

    Val Pollard and Finn Barton

Lovely Finn was a friend to all, but we particularly enjoyed his partnership with vivacious Val Pollard.

The unlikely duo hit it off when Finn started working for Val and husband Eric as a cleaner at The Grange. Having just graduated from university with a degree in Economics, scrubbing toilets and making beds was far from Finn’s dream job. But his banter with Val made the time pass and Finn grew fond of her.

In turn, Val took Finn under her wing and became something of a surrogate mum to the lad. Because Finn was so polite and compliant, she often recruited him to take part in whatever mischievous scheme she’d cooked up.

Tragically, Val and Finn were killed within a year of one another, but we like to think she’s still leading him astray, somewhere.

April and Ross talk in Emmerdale

Emmerdale unlikely friendships: April Windsor and Ross Barton

Ross Barton started out as a one-dimensional bad boy, but his cute friendship with April Windsor showed he had a heart. The duo entered each other’s lives in 2014 when Ross started going out with April’s mum Donna.

Even after Donna’s tragic death Ross remained in April’s life. We still remember how he dressed up as a pirate to make April’s first Christmas without her mummy a happy one.

When Ross returned to the village in 2024 he and April reconnected. But the teen found herself caught up in Ross’s trouble with boxing promotor Jade, which led her to learn Donna’s death was suicide, not accidental.

Now April has gone missing, Ross is out there, searching the streets for his friend. We hope she’s found safe and sound and that Emmerdale will carry on investing in their friendship.

Aaron and Paddy at The Woolpack bar together
Paddy is a saint to put up with Aaron (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)

    Aaron Dingle and Paddy Kirk

Paddy has been a constant in Aaron’s life and is like a surrogate dad and big best mate all in one.

In the early days Paddy often found himself on the receiving end of Aaron’s fury. The troubled Dingle used him as an emotional, and sometimes physical, punchbag. But no matter what Aaron has thrown at Paddy, he’s always supported him.

He was the one who helped Aaron come to terms with his sexuality and the person he confided his affair with Robert to.

Aaron has been there for Paddy too. He was the one dishing out sensible advice after Paddy discovered Bear was his real father. He also was firmly team Paddy when Chas’s affair with Al Chapman became public knowledge.

We adore their on-screen chemistry, which is testament to Dominic Brunt and Danny Miller’s acting abilities.

Kerry Wyatt and Eric Pollard sit down to talk together
There’s a bond building between Kerry and Eric (Credit: ITV)

Emmerdale unlikely friendships: Eric Pollard and Kerry Wyatt

2025 is about to see the arrival of Emmerdale’s latest unlikely friendship – Kerry and Eric.

The pair had a spectacular falling out last year after Kerry discovered Eric had deceived her over the value of a necklace. Cunning Pollard proved there was life in the old dog yet when he tricked Kerry into thinking the jewellery was worthless, then sold it behind her back for a small fortune.

But now it seems all that is forgiven and forgotten. Eric finds himself opening up to Kerry over his guilt at not paying Brenda back. He admits he’s considering torching the shop to claim the insurance, which leads Kerry to reflect on the arson attack she carried out which claimed Frank Clayton’s life. Will she confide her deadly secret to Eric?

We’re all here for this new double act. Eric always works well with a feisty female sidekick and they don’t come much feistier than Kerry.

As Anthony’s true killer was revealed this week – 13 other times Emmerdale has surprised us with a plot twist

This week’s Emmerdale revealed the plot twist we all suspected was coming – Aaron Dingle is innocent of murdering Anthony. The soap led us to believe that Aaron killed Anthony in a fit of rage. But it was really Ruby who suffocated the old man as he lay on the floor.

Caleb then helped cover up the crime. Together with Anthony and John, the foursome then agreed to keep silent for everyone’s sake.

From faked deaths to real ones, surprise returns and cover-ups, this is just the latest plot twist in a soap that’s had more than their fair share over the years. Join us as we look back at some of Emmerdale’s most memorable plot twists.

Kim stands behind an unsuspecting Frank on Emmerdale

    1. Kim Tate was alive in the ultimate Emmerdale plot twist

In one of the most infamous plot twists in soap history, Kim Tate was revealed to be alive after faking her death in 1997. Believed dead after apparently being found so at the wheel of her car, Kim led both husband Frank and the soap’s viewers to believe she’d died. Really, though, she’d jetted off on a jolly to the Caribbean.

The truth came out months later, when Kim returned to haunt Frank – revealing that it was a lookalike he’d wrongly identified as his dead wife. The shock proved too much for Frank, whose heart gave out while Kim looked on with satisfaction. Ours too.

    2. The death of Viv and Terry

Few could have foreseen fan-favourites Terry Woods and Viv Hope dying in a brutal twist on their story, but that was how the infamous Post Office fire of 2011 played out.

After falling asleep with a bottle of wine inside her, Viv dozed off inside the Post Office, oblivious to the fire starting around her. Terry rushed inside to rescue Viv, only to die with her in the ensuing explosion. Talk about going out with a bang.

    3. Charity’s return

In 2009, Debbie began dating an engaged man named Michael Conway. Hoping that he would leave his fiancée for her, Debbie decided to crash the wedding – and was shocked to discover that the bride was none other than her own mum, Charity.

    4. The death of Holly Barton was the most shocking ever Emmerdale plot twist

One of the best-kept secrets in soap history, the demise of Holly Barton truly came out of the blue. The day began like any other, and as Moira entered the bedroom to check up on her daughter, she was shocked to find Holly dead – having died of an overdose. Prior to this, the soap had given no indication that Holly had succumbed to her addiction again.

Holly surprised us again last year, returning in a dream sequence as Moira underwent life-saving brain surgery.

    Carl in pain on Emmerdale
Cameron finished what Chas had started (Credit: ITV/YouTube)

    5. Cameron killed Carl King

Nasty piece of work Carl King was killed after making an enemy of half the village. Blackmailing Chas after learning she’d been having an affair with Cameron Murray, he grew obsessed with getting his ex back.

After being spurned yet again after she married Dan Spencer, Carl confessed that he killed his father for her – and then attempted to rape her. She fought him off with a brick, before fleeing.

However, Chas ultimately wasn’t the one who finished Carl off. No, that was Cameron, who found Carl in his state and, after arguing, hit him a second (and final) time with the same brick.

Rebecca gagged and chained up on Emmerdale
Rebecca didn’t have an easy time of it (Credit: ITV)

    6. Rebecca’s not dead… oh, yes she is

Poor Rebecca didn’t have an easy time of it in her time on Emmerdale, first suffering a brain injury in a terrible car crash, and then being held hostage by Lachlan White and his accomplice, demented nurse Mrs. Sykes.

Rebecca was thought dead until she managed to escape – reuniting with her friends and son Seb at her own graveside. She and Ross left the village in 2018 – only for her to die off-screen during a routine operation. Poor Rebecca never could catch a break.

Meena Jutla in court in Emmerdale
Meena was deadlier than anyone could have anticipated (Credit: ITV)

    7. Meena was a serial killer

In 2021, nurse Meena Jutla shocked audiences by killing Doctor Liam’s daughter, Leanna Cavanagh. However, neither viewers nor the cast were prepared for the truth behind the situation. Innocent-faced Meena was a serial killer.

Having been brought on with the story in mind, star Paige Sandhu kept the storyline a secret from her fellow cast members – revealing how shocked they were when they discovered that Meena was a secret serial killer.

Paige prepared to play a psychopath by watching Taxi Driver, American Psycho and Killer Women with Piers Morgan (whether she took inspiration from the killer women or Piers Morgan to get inside the mind of a soulless monster is unclear).

Cain protected Kyle from the police in Emmerdale

    8. Kyle shot Al Chapman

When someone shot resident love rat Al Chapman dead, Cain was facing a stretch behind bars. While it was true that Cain had brought the gun in the first place, he wasn’t the one who pulled the trigger.

Instead, the soap revealed that it had been little Kyle who killed Al. Thankfully, Cain managed to clear his name, and the whole thing was swept under the rug in the months which followed.

    Rishi dead on Emmerdale
Rishi was killed on his son’s wedding day (Credit: ITV)

    9. Rishi took a tumble in a tragic Emmerdale plot twist

After learning that his biological father – well, wasn’t – Jai took the frustration out on the man who’d brought him up. So bad was their feud, that he even forbade the old man from coming to his wedding, leaving Rishi heartbroken.

Jai relented, and as the big day beckoned, the family tried to reach Rishi. Ultimately, he never made it, which was when the soap shared the terrible news – Rishi was dead, having taken a fall (or as it happened, a push) down the stairs.

Joe talks to Dawn on Emmerdale
Joe’s back… but for how long? (Credit: ITV)

    10. Joe Tate’s alive… for now

He was thought dead after seemingly being killed by Cain Dingle. However, Joe had survived – with father figure and mentor Graham helping him to fake his own death. A shock twist revealed, months later, that Joe had survived his run-in with Cain and was now living abroad.

Joe has since returned for good. But, if his poor health is anything to go by, who’s to say for how long.

Nicky and Caleb talk on Emmerdale
Caleb schemed with son Nicky to take down Kim (Credit: ITV)

    11. Caleb the secret Tate

Caleb Miligan arrived in the village in a shroud of mystery, introduced as Cain Dingle’s long-lost brother. But it was another dales dynasty Caleb had it out for – and the soap revealed that he was none other than the illegitimate son of Kim’s ex, Frank Tate.

In a series of plot twists, viewers learned that Caleb had a son of his own – Nicky Miligan – and it was all part of Caleb’s grand scheme to bring Kim down.

Craig dead in a field on Emmerdale
    Who killed Craig? (Credit: ITV)

    12. It was the horse who done it

When Lydia Dingle’s rapist, Craig, was found dead in a field, there was no shortage of potential murderers. Husband Sam and brother-in-law Cain were the usual suspects, but any Dingle could (and would!) realistically have done it.

The truth was far stranger than that – and it was revealed that Craig died after being kicked in the head by Kim Tate’s horse.

Cain and Ruby was all kings of wrong and we do not approve (Credit: ITV)
The plot twist we’d all rather forget (Credit: ITV)

    13. Cain slept with Ruby in the worst ever Emmerdale plot twist

Not all plot twists are welcome ones. And, as Moira lay in hospital undergoing treatment for her brain tumour, Cain cheated on his wife – with his own sister-in-law.

Fans were left horrified by Cain and Ruby’s fling, and the soap has done little to convince us that it was a good idea in the months following.

  • Ruby and Caleb should pin Anthony’s death on Cain as ‘justice’ for his treatment of Ollie and Jasmine in Classic Emmerdale, fans demand

Ruby and Caleb should pin Anthony’s death on Cain as ‘justice’ for his treatment of Ollie and Jasmine in Classic Emmerdale, fans demand

With a shocking murder sending shockwaves around those in the know on Emmerdale, those accountable are desperately trying to keep their secret (and Anthony Fox) buried – but some are suggesting that it should be pinned on Cain Dingle, for his prior treatment of Jasmine, Ollie and Amy.

The soap revealed last night (Thursday, January 30) that it was Ruby who killed Anthony. Finding her father after Aaron had beaten him up, Ruby finished him off, ridding the world of another monster. This, the truth, came out as a guilt-ridden Aaron also confessed to the crime.

He was horrified to learn that Ruby and Caleb had let him believe he’d killed a man. And, as an oblivious Laurel handed herself into the police for attacking Anthony, fingers were pointing in every direction.

What those responsible need is a patsy. And who better to take the fall than Cain Dingle?

Cain should take the rap as ‘justice’ for treatment of Jasmine and Ollie in Classic Emmerdale, fans say

Writing on Reddit in the wake of last night’s episode, one fan put forth their idea for closing out Anthony’s murder… and it would serve as poetic justice for Cain, who has plenty of skeletons in his own closet.

“If it was up to me they would just pin it on Cain after Ruby finds out that he also used to abuse teenage girls. And then he gets sent to prison and the family all live happily ever,” this fan wrote.

Elsewhere, others remembered Cain’s unsavoury history with younger women.

“Having Cain involved in Ruby’s storyline is sickening considering he slept with 15 year old Ollie when he was 26 and got Amy pregnant when she was 16 and he was 36,” another viewer said on X.

“He’s gotten away with too much. I’m not forgetting him sleeping with Amy when she was 16 and then threatening her to get an abortion. Or Jasmine who was barely 18 (to get back at his daughter nonetheless). Dirty behaviour,” said a third.

Cain Dingle – from predator to loving family man

These days, Cain is a (mostly) reformed character, playing devoted father to his children and loving husband to wife Moira. But it was a different story when he first arrived in the village – especially where women were concerned.

When he wasn’t involved in a toxic romance with cousin Charity or scheming Sadie King, Cain is also remembered for his more problematic relationships with a series of younger women. First there was 15-year-old Ollie Reynolds, who Cain bedded in an attempt to get under the skin of her mum, Angie.

Then there was Jasmine Thomas, his daughter’s girlfriend – who fell pregnant with his child after he slept with her to get back at Debbie. After Ollie and Jasmine, Cain then moved on to 16-year-old Amy, who he also made pregnant – but kept the child in spite of his threats.

The soap may have swept Cain’s earlier behaviour under the rug, but many haven’t forgotten. Will the soap ever hold Cain accountable for his grim past?

  • From Carl King to son Tom, Emmerdale characters that finally got their comeuppance

From Carl King to son Tom, Emmerdale characters that finally got their comeuppance

Anthony Fox is the latest in a line of evil Emmerdale characters to get their comeuppance after he was killed. The murder of Ruby’s abusive father is part of a huge whodunnit storyline, and although Aaron believes he dealt the fatal blow, some it doesn’t all add up to him being the killer.

We can’t be sorry to see Anthony go. He’s rotten to the core and quite possibily the vilest character to ever set foot in the Dales. His sick past has finally caught up with him. And he’s not the first Emmerdale character who got what was coming to them.

From Carl King to his nasty offspring Tom, here are nine other wicked ones who got their just desserts.

Emmerdale characters that got their comeuppance: Tom King

Tom’s comeuppance felt like a very long coming after almost a year of witnessing his campaign of terror and abuse against Belle.

For months, fragile Belle suffered in silence as Tom physically, mentally and emotionally tortured her. He controlled her every move and continually gaslit Belle into believing it was her own fault. Tom spied on Belle through hidden cameras, tried to convince the locals she was mad and even faked Piper’s death in a cruel bid to cause distress.

After being pushed to the edge, Belle found the courage to report her husband’s crimes to the police. The discovery of crucial evidence led to Tom being arrested and put on trial.

On December 19, 2024, Emmerdale aired a format-breaking episode. Over an hour, it went back and forth between Tom and Belle giving evidence in court and the jury deliberating their verdict.

Tom put on a convincing performance, and the audience had to hold tight until the end to witness justice being served. We cheered along with the Dingles as Tom was found guilty on two counts and sentenced to three years in prison. As he was taken down, viewers heard the stories of real women who’d suffered the same abuse Belle had.

A very powerful moment in Emmerdale history.

Emmerdale characters that got their comeuppance: Carl King

No wonder Tom turned out the way he did, with such a narcissistic bully for a father.

Carl King entered the show as a typical arrogant womaniser, whose biggest crime was two-timing. But he graduated to full blown baddie status after murdering his dad, Tom Senior, in a gripping whodunit.

For six years Carl got away with his crime, which was ridiculous given that half the village knew what he’d done, including his own brothers. But his downfall came when he made an enemy of fellow psycho Cameron Murray.

Carl discovered Cameron was sleeping with his ex Chas Dingle and he didn’t want another man having her. He attempted to rape Chas in a jealous rage, but she fought back and knocked him out with a brick. Chas thought Carl was dead so she fled the scene. But he was still alive.

Cameron was the one who finished the job – and he smashed Carl’s skull in. Over eight million viewers tuned in to watch Carl’s comeuppance, which was part of the Emmerdale’s big 40th live episode.

    Meena Jutla

Mad Meena was deliciously evil and so much fun to watch, but the killing had to come to an end eventually. There wouldn’t have been anyone left in the village otherwise.

Meena had already claimed two victims before she even set foot in the Dales – her best friend Nadine, and her own father – but her lust for blood led her to kill again.

In total, the nutty nurse bumped off three villagers. She pushed Dr Liam’s teenage daughter Leanna off a bridge, bashed Ben Tucker’s brains out and left Andrea Tate to burn to death in a maze. All were calculated kills and Meena took sadistic delight in stalking her prey. She even got in the mood for murder by singing along to her favourite pop songs.

Meena attempted to kill Manpreet and Vinny, but Liam interrupted her plan. She went on the run and returned on Billy and Dawn‘s wedding day and held the couple at gunpoint. But the police weren’t far behind.

After being arrested, Meena stood trial and was found guilty. She’s serving 75 years in prison with no chance of release.

Cain Dingle on Judgement Day in Emmerdale

    Cain Dingle

In December 2011, village bad boy Cain found himself at the centre of a whodunnit, dubbed Judgement Day. The mechanic was attacked in the middle of the village by a mystery assailant and left for dead.

At that time Cain had fewer friends than enemies in the village. He’d destroyed John and Moira Barton’s marriage, impregnated 17-year-old Amy Wyatt and turned most of his family against him.

Six locals were in the frame for the crime, and the police were convinced Jai Sharma was their man. But in the end it turned out the least likely suspect, Zak, was their attacker. The Dingle patriarch decided his son needed to be taught a lesson for bringing disgrace to the family name.

Zak eventually ‘fessed up to what he’d done, and Cain (who had recovered by this point) forgave him.

Emmerdale characters that got their comeuppance: Emma Barton

Emma’s murderous past caught up with her in 2017 when she died after falling from the Hotten Bypass. But did she fall or was she pushed? That was the question on every fan’s lips.

Emma Barton was the estranged wife of James and mum to Pete, Ross and Finn. She had abandoned her family when the boys were young and came to the village looking for forgiveness.

She managed to convince her sons to give her another chance and Emma wormed her way back into James’s affections. But then Emma discovered James really loved Moira and she totally lost the plot.

Emma held James hostage in a remote cottage and tortured him. He managed to escape, but she pushed him over a motorway bridge, which led to the fatal Hotten Bypass Crash. The rampage continued as Emma abducted Moira’s baby boy Isaac then shot Finn dead in a confused state.

Hearing the news of her son’s death over the radio, traumatised Emma drove herself to the viaduct. She contemplated suicide and was seen falling, although it later transpired she’d been pushed to her death by Moira.

    Cameron Murray in Emmerdale

    Cameron Murray

Unhinged Cameron Murray remains one of Emmerdale’s most iconic villains and his demise was nothing short of spectacular.

During his two year reign of terror, Cameron claimed the lives of three locals. His first victim was Carl King, who he bludgeoned to death during Emmerdale’s live 40th anniversary episode. In order to protect his secret, Cam claimed two more victims – farmhand Alex Moss and young mum Gennie Walker.

His crimes were discovered and Cameron was found guilty of triple murder and sent to prison. Months later he escaped jail and returned to the village for one final stand.

The dramatic seige took place in The Woolpack, where Cameron held a group of terrified locals hostage. Events reached a thrilling climax as Cameron attempted to drown former lover Chas in the pub’s flooded cellar. This time he wasn’t so lucky and ended up grabbing the live wire of an electric light bulb. He was killed instantly.

    Pierce Harris in Emmerdale

Emmerdale characters that got their comeuppance: Pierce Harris

Pierce Harris was introduced to the audience as the grieving widower of Paddy’s lover Tess. He grew close to Rhona and the pair embarked on a relationship.

Rhona hoped Pierce would be the one to mend her broken heart, but he turned out to be a monster. Behind closed doors, Pierce subjected Rhona to horrendous abuse and raped her on their wedding night.

She went to the police, reported the crime, and Pierce was sent to prison. After serving two years he was released and made his way back to the village. Still intent on controlling his ex, Pierce murdered Rhona’s boyfriend Graham Foster and kidnapped Vanessa Woodfield and her young son Johnny.

Rhona eventually outsmarted the villain by getting him to confess to Graham’s murder on tape. She then injected Pierce with a tranquilizer to hold him there until the police arrived to arrest him. Thanks to Rhona’s bravery, they had enough to charge Pierce and get him sent back inside. He ended up dying behind bars.

    Craig Reed in Emmerdale

Emmerdale characters that got their comeuppance: Craig Reed

On first impressions, Lydia’s ex-boyfriend Craig seemed like a decent enough bloke. But he had a dark side.

He offered Lydia a cleaning job at his workplace, but started making creepy advances towards her. Then one night, Craig trapped Lydia inside his office, where he raped her.

Lydia suffered in silence for weeks afterwards before finding the courage to tell her family what had happened. From that moment on, Craig was a dead man.

In October 2023, Craig’s bloodied and bruised body was found in the middle of a field on Home Farm land. Every member of the Dingle family was in the frame for his murder. But flashback scenes revealed Craig’s killer wasn’t even human.

Although Craig was beaten black and blue by Sam, it Kim Tate’s horse, Ice, that finished the job. The creature got spooked and trampled Craig to death in front of Kim and Cain, who left the rapist to die a lonely painful death. Which was exactly what he deserved.

    DI Mark Malone in Emmerdale

Emmerdale characters that got their comeuppance: DI Malone

DI Mark Malone is now six feet under in Home Farm soil. And we’re not sorry about it.

The bent copper came to Emmerdale in 2020. He was the former lover of Harriet Finch and the boss of a criminal network, who drug dealer Will Taylor worked for. So there were scores to settle.

From beginning to end, Malone caused nothing but trouble. He blackmailed Will, Cain and Billy into working for him, then launched a campaign of terror against Dawn. This culminated with Malone trying to convince Dawn to take a fatal overdose of heroin.

Harriet came to Dawn’s rescue and clonked Malone over the head with an ornament. She thought she’d killed him, but he came back to life and tried to attack them both. Dawn grabbed a gun and shot Malone three times. And this time he really was dead.

Dawn and Harriet initially buried their victim in the churchyard, before Will moved the body to a secluded place in the Home Farm estate.

  • Top Emmerdale whodunnits: From Tom King’s death to Cain Dingle’s attack, the most unforgettable moments

Top Emmerdale whodunnits: From Tom King’s death to Cain Dingle’s attack, the most unforgettable moments

Emmerdale have treated us to some cracking whodunnits over the years, drawing fans into the mystery and giving them the chance to play detective.

The latest crime we’re all trying to solve is who killed Anthony Fox? Ruby’s rapist dad was murdered just hours after his crimes became public knowledge. Right now it looks like Aaron Dingle beat him to death, but there are clues that’s not the whole story.

Anthony isn’t the only villain to have found themselves at the centre of a gripping whodunnit. Here we look back at those puzzling cases that kept us guessing until the big reveal…

Tom King lies dead on the ground in Emmerdale

Emmerdale best whodunnits: Who murdered Tom King?

Perhaps Emmerdale’s most famous whodunnit, Tom’s murder was the centre of the 2006 Christmas special.

The nasty King patriarch had just married the equally loathsome Rosemary Sinclair, but what should have been a day of celebration ended in disaster. While getting ready for the reception in his bedroom at Home Farm, Tom was approached by a mystery figure. An argument ensued, Tom was clobbered over the head with an ornament and pushed out of the window to his death.

There were 10 official suspects in the frame for the crime, including all three of Tom’s sons and his new bride. And in a soap first, Emmerdale gave fans the chance to play detective by launching an online game so they could gather clues.

After five months of keeping everyone guessing, Tom’s son Carl was unmasked as the killer. But instead of being carted off down the cop shop, Carl remained in the village. He’d got away with murder, but the soap gods always find a way to punish. In the end, Carl got his comeuppance when he was bumped off by serial killer Cameron Murray in 2012.

    Who attacked Cain Dingle?

In 2011, Emmerdale announced Cain Dingle would be attacked in a whodunnit, dubbed ‘Judgement Day’. The storyline made perfect sense as Cain was the most hated man in the Dales.

His affair with Moira had destroyed the Barton family, he’d got 17-year-old Amy Wyatt pregnant, made an enemy of Jai Sharma and managed to alienate his own family.

After a showdown one night in The Woolpack Cain was bludgeoned with a crowbar. He tried to escape, but was struck again over the head and left for dead. Moments later, Cameron Murray came across the scene of the crime and saw Jai standing over the body, his hands covered in Cain’s blood.

Cain was rushed to hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery for a clot on the brain. He came out of his coma and tried to frame Jai for the crime. Moira’s wronged husband John was also arrested, but then released due to a lack of evidence.

On January 5, 2012 – less than a month after the attack – Cain’s own dad Zak was revealed to be the perpetrator. Zak confessed he’d wanted to teach Cain a lesson for his continual bad behaviour and disgracing the Dingle name. Cain eventually forgave his father and agreed to drop the charges against Jai.

Robert Sugden is shot in Emmerdale

Emmerdale best whodunnits: Who shot Robert Sugden?

Ruthless Robert was another one who didn’t give a damn who he hurt. So it was only a matter of time before he ended up with a bullet in him.

In September 2015, Robert became public enemy number one after it was revealed he’d pushed Katie Sugden to her death. One of his haters took their revenge by gunning Rob down in the village.

Emmerdale added a twist to the tale by deciding to reveal the shooter in a special flashback episode, which aired the month later.

The clock was rewound and viewers discovered Robert’s adoptive brother, Andy was the culprit. He’d wanted Robert dead for what he did to Katie, but had paid Ross Barton to pull the trigger for him.

    Who killed Emma Barton?

Killer nurse Emma Barton got her comeuppance when she was shoved off Hotten Viaduct in October 2017. The discovery of her body sparked a huge whodunnit, with lots of twists and turns along the way.

In the lead up to her death, Emma was spiraling out of control. The year before she’d pushed husband James off a bridge during the Hotten Bypass. She’d also accidentally killed her youngest son Finn and kidnapped Moira Dingle’s baby Isaac. Haunted by hallucinations of James, Emma drove herself to the viaduct to end it all.

First thoughts were that Emma had committed suicide, but it then became clear it was murder. There were many who had reason to want Emma gone, but only one who hated her enough to kill. And that one person was Moira.

The truth was revealed in flashback scenes, which were cleverly intertwined with present day. Moira confessed to the police that she’d pushed Emma, but escaped punishment after her son Adam managed to convince them he was the killer. He then fled the country as a fugitive.

Kim Tate in Home Farm - Emmerdale

Emmerdale best whodunnits: Who pushed Kim Tate?

Kim Tate’s dramatic return in 2018 was a night to remember after she got pushed off a balcony by an unknown culprit.

Guests had gathered at Home Farm for a charity masquerade ball when Kim made her entrance. Fresh from jail and looking a million dollars, Kim announced she was back on the throne. But within minutes, the superbitch was making enemies with just about everyone.

One partygoer did not take kindly to Kim’s insults and shoved her over the balcony. Kim came crashing down on a champagne tower and for a moment fans feared she was dead.

Charity Dingle was arrested for the attack as witnesses had seen her quarreling with Kim, but in fact it was Faith Dingle who ‘fessed up to the deed. Faith showed little remorse, admitting everyone at the ball wanted to give ‘that witch a shove’.

And as for Kim, she lived to tell the tale, but was carted back to prison for driving without a licence.

Graham was killed by Pierce in Emmerdale
Graham met a very grisly end (Credit: ITV/YouTube)

    Who was Graham Foster’s killer?

Emmerdale kicked 2020 off in style with the murder of fan-favourite Graham Foster. Joe Tate’s former right-hand man made a lot of enemies during his two years in the village.

Graham’s on-off affair with Kim Tate had turned toxic after he’d started dating Rhona Goskirk, and she’d already instructed Al Chapman to kill him. Charity Dingle was baying for Graham’s blood after he locked her son Ryan Stocks in a shed. And then there was Marlon Dingle, who was desperate to stop Graham leaving the country with Rhona and Leo.

On January 20, 2020, Graham arranged to meet Marlon in the woods to discuss matters. But he never got the chance when he was walloped over the head by a hooded figure, who revealed themselves to be Rhona’s ex-husband and rapist Pierce Harris.

It turned out the pair had history after Graham visited Pierce in prison and had him beaten up. This time Pierce came out on top. He attacked Graham with a log, causing him to fall off a cliff. Pierce then delivered the final, fatal, blow with a torch!

    Caleb speaks
Caleb’s crimes caught up with him (Credit: ITV)

Emmerdale best whodunnits: Who attacked Caleb Miligan?

No one was surprised when cold-hearted Caleb was pushed off a steep ravine by one of his foes.

In typical soap style, in the minutes leading up to the attack Caleb was busy making an enemy of just about everyone. But he’d already spent months lying and scheming as part of his mission to destroy Kim Tate.

When the truth came out, the villagers turned on Caleb during a tense showdown in the pub. Afterwards, Caleb took a walk into the countryside to think on his sins. But he wasn’t alone. Someone followed behind and shoved him over the edge of a woodland ridge.

Several characters were seen acting suspiciously at the time and most had their money on Mackenzie Boyd. However, it later transpired Caleb’s son Nicky was responsible for the violent attack. Viewers learnt the truth when the nanny paid his comatose father a visit in hospital and apologised for what he’d done.

Caleb came round and revealed he’d known all along it was Nicky. But he chose to forgive his boy, acknowledging it was his fault for forcing Nicky to take part in his dastardly schemes.

    Craig Reed in Emmerdale
Evil Craig died under the hooves of Kim’s horse (Credit: ITV)

    How did Craig Reed die?

The body of Lydia Dingle’s rapist was discovered on in the middle of a field back in October 2023, sparking what turned out to be Emmerdale’s most surprising whodunnit. It was a confusing case, but viewers only had to wait four days for the big reveal.

During a special week of episodes, the Dingles took centre stage at a lock-in at The Woolpack. One by one, the family were interrogated by Lydia, as she questioned their whereabouts the day Craig died.

Huge secrets were revealed, and for a while it looked as if Sam had murdered his wife’s abuser. But in a twist that, let’s face it, no one saw coming, Craig’s killer turned out to be Kim Tate’s horse, Ice.

Flashback scenes revealed Kim was out riding when she encountered Craig on her land. Bloodied and bruised after being beaten by Sam, Craig was raving like a loony. He jumped in front of Ice, who reacted by trampling Craig. By the time Cain arrived on the scene Craig was on his way out, so he and Kim opted not to dial 999. Instead the pair just calmly departed, leaving Craig to perish.

What did we say about those soap gods?

Emmerdale: Stress of Ruby and Cain reveal to give Caleb a heart attack, fans predict

Fans of Emmerdale have predicted that the stress of learning about Ruby and Cain sleeping together could cause Caleb Miligan to suffer a heart attack. Anthony revealed to Caleb that Ruby had slept with his brother amid their barn showdown this week.

As Caleb confronted Anthony over his abuse of Ruby, the old man was desperate to squirm his way out of trouble. Revealing Cain and Ruby had been having an affair, he hoped to throw her version of events into doubt.

This ultimately didn’t work, and Caleb was in two minds about to believe what he’d said. But, as Cain arrived on the scene (giving Anthony a chance to slip away), it became clear that he has his doubts. Pointing a gun at Cain’s turned back, it seems as though something about Anthony’s words rang true.

He mentioned nothing to either Cain or Ruby – but could the stress of it all give Caleb a heart attack?

Emmerdale fans predict Caleb to have a heart attack

Writing on social media as the episode aired, fans shared their thoughts on what Caleb’s next steps might be. And one fan wondered whether the pressure of the secret might give him a heart attack.

“Caleb’s biding his time I reckon. Then it’s going to eat him up and trigger his heart attack,” wrote one viewer on X.

This isn’t the first time this theory has emerged – with another worrying for Caleb’s blood pressure after the events of last week.

“What an episode Caleb defo going to have a heart attack after that,” one fan said. But how much longer can Caleb keep his doubts under wraps?

“Caleb looks like he’s dying to confront Cain about sleeping with Ruby,” wrote a third, of last night’s episode.

“Caleb knows about Cain and Ruby and may be biding his time in another act of revenge,” another predicted.

    What’s Caleb’s game?

Caleb fights for his life in flash-forward

Lending credence to theories of a heart attack, the soap aired an unsettling flash-forward earlier this month which showed Caleb fighting for his life. While the exact circumstances are unclear, Caleb’s life will be left hanging in the balance as the story continues.

And, in other disparate images, Cain wept over a mystery grave, while an unknown figure appeared to be trapped beneath the surface of an icy river. What does all this mean for Caleb?

What happened in Emmerdale tonight: Anthony lived to fight another day – but not if Aaron has anything to do with it

Emmerdale tonight revealed Anthony had not been shot and escaped Caleb (who also survived). But then the vile abuser found himself cornered by Aaron…

Also, Caleb was struggling to process the revelation about Cain and Ruby. He didn’t confront his family, but can he get past it?

Elsewhere, Nicola and Laurel were still panicking and Joe and Dawn were covering up.

Here’s everything that happened in Emmerdale tonight, Wednesday January 22.

The gunshot outcome was revealed in Emmerdale tonight

Cain ran to save the day

Cain ran into the barn to find out why a gun went off. He saw Anthony running away and Caleb holding a gun. It turned out neither Caleb nor Anthony got hit. The gun had gone off, but when Caleb bent down to pick it up, Anthony got past him. But the way Caleb was being with Cain made it clear Anthony’s revelation was playing on his mind.

Cain tried to talk some sense into Caleb, telling him to let the police deal with Anthony. But Caleb insisted that couldn’t happen as Steph could never find out the truth.

Cain offered to team up with Caleb to go after him together, but Caleb was talking in riddles. He clearly doesn’t know whether to believe Anthony’s claims over Cain and Ruby’s ‘affair’ or not, especially as Cain assured him they were blood and he always had his back.

Caleb kept it together – just

Cain took Caleb home and Ruby was horrified to see he had a gun. She told him he had to leave it and their priority must be Steph.

Caleb was still being shirty with Cain and despite Cain’s reassurance to Ruby Caleb didn’t know anything, we all know he does.

Caleb then told Ruby no one else would ever find out and Steph would never know… So how long do we reckon before Steph finds out?

    Anthony confronted by someone else

Ruby was rushing around looking for Steph, desperate to make amends. But Aaron accosted her in the village and bombarded her with questions over her dad. He knew something was wrong and he’d seen the same look in her eyes he knew so well from his own experiences with his dad, Gordon.

Meanwhile, Anthony had hobbled over to the depot, but his phone battery had gone dead, so he couldn’t contact Steph. As he went inside a car pulled up and Anthony soon found Aaron waiting for him. “I think it’s about time me and you had a little chat, he told him as the credits rolled…

Nicola went full CSI in Emmerdale tonight

Nicola and Laurel were doing a clean-up job at the house to remove the evidence. CSI superfan Nicola was on the case as Laurel was whining and staring longingly at a wine bottle.

Steph then turned up just as they finished cleaning. She wanted to know if they’d seen her grandad. Laurel was feeling sick and worried – but really it was self-defence, so we don’t know why they’re in such a panic.

Dawn had regrets – or did she?

Joe and Dawn got dressed after their intimate liaison, with Dawn already feeling the guilt as she did up her boots. Sidenote: how does Joe keep his carpet so white when they’re all walking around in outdoor shoes everywhere?

Anyway, Dawn wasn’t sure if she could trust Joe, but he assured her he is a changed man. Promise.

They were then unable to escape the bedroom because Lydia was directly outside hoovering. Not to bang on about carpets, but she seemed to be vaccuming that one spot for a really long time – there’ll be nothing left of it.

Joe then opened up about why he blamed Charity for his dad’s death and told Dawn his life story. He admitted he was lonely so came back to be with family.

Dawn then revealed her own past – living in a crack den and having her son taken away by social services. And Lydia finished hoovering so Dawn escaped.

But then Billy returned home with Evan and Dawn fawned over him in front of an understanding Joe. She claimed they would never sleep together again, but we all know that’s not true, don’t we?!

    Also in Emmerdale tonight…

Charity spotted Noah’s watch and his story about getting an advance on his salary didn’t wash. She immediately went round to confront Joe. Charity insisted he drop the act and stay away from her son.

Joe had absolutely no intention of doing so, though, and immediately arranged to meet Noah for a drink. He called him ‘bro’ which was a bit disconcerting, but still.

As he went to leave, Joe had a wobble and once again we’re left wondering, what is wrong with him.
