  • As Carl breaks Chas’s leg when he proposes, other awful Emmerdale proposals

As Carl breaks Chas’s leg when he proposes, other awful Emmerdale proposals

Carl King sweeps Chas Dingle off her feet when he proposes in Classic Emmerdale this week – literally!

He scoops Chas up to stop her talking when he’s trying to tell her how he feels.

But then he drops her again and breaks her leg! OUCH!

In celebration of Carl’s disastrous proposal to Chas (which, let’s face it, is just a taster of how toxic their relationship will eventually become) here’s a round-up of the most awful Emmerdale proposals!

Dan proposes to Kerry, but is it to late to save thei relationship?
Dan proposed to Kerry and she wasn’t happy! (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)

Dan Spencer and Kerry Wyatt – awful Emmerdale proposals

Kerry Wyatt was working out the best way to dump long-term love Dan Spencer when he dropped a surprise on her. He proposed in front of the drinkers in the Woolpack, with a delighted Amelia watching on.

Kerry accepted but she wasn’t impressed and instead when they got a moment to themselves she told him, they weren’t as solid as he thought – but in very different places.

    Awww.

    Charity and Vanessa
Charity hijacked someone else’s proposal for Vanessa (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)

    Charity Dingle and Vanessa Woodfield

Fan fave Vanity got engaged in a rather unconventional way when Charity hijacked a rude and unpleasant client’s proposal.

The millionaire was so obnoxious to Charity when he hired Home Farm to propose to his own girlfriend, that she locked him in a cupboard! And then, seizing the moment, she nicked the proposal he’d planned – horse-drawn carriage and all. Vanessa wasn’t happy about it when she realised, but she soon forgave Charity, though the pair never actually made it down the aisle.

Robert was annoyed to find Lachlan White in the boot!
Robert was annoyed to find Lachlan White in the boot!

    Robron

If we’re talking awful Emmerdale proposals then Robert Sugden and Aaron Dingle have to be on the list! Robert planned to propose to boyfriend Aaron, but the pair were in the car bickering . What were they fighting about? Ah, well that would be the fact that Aaron had kidnapped Lachlan White and put him in the boot.

As the pair argued, Robert told Aaron that his plan to propose had been ruined! Surprised, Aaron glanced over to see Robert produce a wedding ring. But at that moment, his future husband yelled at him to look out, as they approached a pile-up ahead. Aaron swerved to avoid the chaos and the car ended up in a lake!

Luckily, both men lived to see another day, and did eventually tie the knot.

When Victoria Sugden, as played by Isabel Hodgins, arrives to his romantic surprise in the woods, David Metcalfe, as played by Matthew Wolfenden, is bursting with excitement. As he goes down on one knee and proposes, Victoria's left speechless but how will she respond?
Read the room, David (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)

    David Metcalfe and Victoria Sugden

After overcoming some pretty big obstacles – including the wrath of serial killer Meena Jutla – to get together, David and Vic decided they were happy as they were.

At least, that’s what Victoria thought they’d decided. But David thought differently. He laid on a big romantic proposal, with fairy lights and cushions and all sorts, only to have Victoria turn him down – leaving him along in the rain in the middle of the woods!

Graham Foster, as played by Andrew Scarborough, visits a grateful Megan Macey, as played by Gaynor Faye, and gives her a blank cheque, but when Frank, as played by Michael Praed, arrives, she is not sure how to explain the situation. Will Megan tell the truth? And how will Frank take it?
    Awks (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)

    Frank Clayton and Megan Macey

When Megan realised her partner Frank was behaving oddly, she convinced herself he was cheating. And so, after some heavy-duty flirting from Graham Foster, she gave into temptation and cheated herself. Except Frank’s strange behaviour was because he was planning to propose – oops!

Guilty Megan rejected Frank’s offer of marriage though they rebuilt their relationship. But tragically Frank was killed in the factory fire (caused by Amy and Kerry) when he went back inside the burning building to get the engagement ring he planned on proposing with.

Al Chapman, as played by Michael Wildman, tells Chas Dingle he's going to end things with Kerry Wyatt, as played by Laura Norton, and actioning his words, he arrives at the pub ready to end things but is blindsided when she proposes to him by doing a rap.
    Just don’t, Kerry. Don’t. (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)

    Kerry and Al Chapman

Less disastrous, more downright excruciatingly embarrassing! This awful Emmerdale proposal is a definite contender for most cringe-worthy. Besotted Kerry proposed to Al in the Woolie, through the medium of rap – bad enough, you’d think, but little did she know Al was cheating on her with Chas Dingle. All together now, “all I ask if I’m not a minger, is say yes, my love, and put a ring on me finger…”

  • Classic Emmerdale: Why was Ashley and Sandy’s relationship so bad?

Classic Emmerdale: Why was Ashley and Sandy’s relationship so bad?

It’s fair to say that Ashley and Sandy had a turbulent father-son relationship in Emmerdale.

Sandy arrived in Emmerdale to see his son Ashley back in 2005. At the time, the pair were estranged. However, Ashley’s new wife Laurel and Sandy’s grandchildren tried to make him feel welcome.

During his time in the Dales, Sandy was involved in some important storylines. The biggest being the issue based story which tackled elder abuse at the hands of son Ashley.

But how did things between the father and son get so bad?

Why were Ashley and Sandy estranged?

Sandy arrived in Emmerdale in 2005 on the day of son Ashley’s wedding to Laurel.

Retired sailor Sandy had endured a strained relationship with his son as years before he’d helped his terminally ill wife end her life.

Sandy’s wife, and Ashley’s mum, Dorothy had cancer. Sandy made the decision to help her die – with Ashley subsequently falling out with his dad over it because helping someone end their life went against his Christian beliefs.

Ashley and Sandy eventually reconciled, but continued to endure an up and down relationship.

    Things got really bad…

    The elder abuse storyline

Probably the biggest storyline Sandy found himself involved in was the one that centred around elder abuse.

After Ashley’s relationship with Laurel briefly ended, Sandy moved back in to the Vicarage to support his son. Ashley and Laurel ended up reuniting, but after discovering her affair with Marlon, Ashley took his anger out on his dad.

One such time saw Sandy spend time with granddaughter Gabby, painting easter eggs. Forgetful Sandy left a tap running and a colourful mess formed in the kitchen.

Upon seeing the mess, Ashley lost his temper, causing Sandy to slip on the water and hurt his wrist. Ashley violently lashed out at Sandy on numerous other occasions before eventually being caught in the act.

Rachel called adult services after becoming concerned for Sandy’s welfare, but nothing could be done. Laurel later walked in and witnessed Ashley hitting his dad, bringing an end to Sandy’s ordeal.

Sandy’s friend Edna wanted to report Ashley to the police, but Sandy refused to give a statement.

    What happened next?

After everyone in the village discovered what Ashley had done, he was left disgraced.

Ashley eventually confessed and was arrested and given a caution. He also resigned from his job and hit rock bottom when he found himself both unemployed and homeless.

He managed to get his life back on track, thanks in part to Marlon, who felt guilty for his involvement in Ashley’s life falling apart in the first place. However, it all came crashing down again when Ashley discovered he had vascular dementia in 2015.

During Ashley’s terminal decline, Sandy and Ashley had got their relationship back on track. Sandy was there for his son and helped the family through the difficult time, which sadly ended in Ashley’s death in 2017.

Sandy himself left the village for Australia to join Betty in 2018 and he passed away Down Under the following year.

She befriended Debbie Dingle but had to get back to school. After a quick return to the village when she was suspended, Jasmine was eventually expelled and came back to do her A Levels in Emmerdale.

    Jasmine and Debbie

Debbie wasn’t the most stable of teenagers herself so she and Jasmine become firm friends.

When Debbie kissed Jasmine, hoping to get a reaction from dad Cain, the teens realised their friendship went deeper and they became a couple.

    Jasmine and Cain

But where Dingles go, trouble follows, and Jasmine was soon drawn into Debbie’s feud with her dad, Cain.

Cain seduced teenage Jasmine to spite poor Debbie. Jasmine got pregnant, and told Debbie everything.

And then Sadie King got involved – which never ended well. She paid for Jasmine to have an abortion. Debbie spilled the beans to Cain – who’d wanted Jasmine to keep the baby – and for a while everything was very messy!

    Jasmine’s journalism career

After school, Jasmine wanted to become a journalist. She landed a job and began investigating the Tom King’s murder. She helped Jamie Hope clear his name, but she didn’t find the real killer.

Later, she started investigating the Macfarlanes – a local crime family – which is where things got a bit tricky.

    Shane Doyle

Jasmine met policeman Shane at the pub and wanted to get to know him so he could help with her story. But Shane wanted to get to know Jasmine for other reasons!

He managed to split up her and boyfriend Jake Dolan, by provoking Jake and then arresting him, and making Jasmine think he had cheated on her.

But still Jasmine was focused on exposing the Macfarlane family.

When Jasmine found out Shane had arrested a woman called Danielle Hutch, with links to the family, she was thrilled. And when Shane said he let her go because he felt sorry for her, she was so pleased with him that she slept with him.

But as Jasmine asked more questions about the arrest, Shane became aggressive and when Jasmine searched his flat she found large amounts of cash.

Shane found Jasmine, there was a struggle and he tried to rape her – she fought back, whacking him with a chair leg and killing him!

    Cover up!

Jasmine, Debbie and Eli Dingle wrapped up Shane’s body and dumped him in a lake. But when his body was discovered accidentally by Victoria Sugden, Jasmine started to realise she had to confess – especially when innocent Ross Kirk was arrested for the crime.

Debbie persuaded Jasmine not to own up, and the pair declared their love for one another. Aww – but it was short-lived.

Ross was released and Eli was arrested instead. Jasmine and Debbie decided to go on the run, but Debbie was arrested.

    Everlasting love?

Jasmine hid for a little while, then when Debbie was in court, she burst in and announced she was the one who’d killed Shane!

Jasmine was found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to four years behind bars. She and Debbie swore their love would last forever, but as far as we know, Debbie’s forgotten all about her!
