  • Who is returning for Zak Dingle’s funeral? From Debbie Dingle to Lisa – all the fan theories so far

Who is returning for Zak Dingle’s funeral? From Debbie Dingle to Lisa – all the fan theories so far

A dark cloud is set to fall over the Dingle family farm with the sad news that beloved patriarch and Emmerdale icon Zak has died. In scenes airing next week, the family will learn the shocking news after a call from Debbie, who breaks the tragic news to her devastated relatives.

Sadly, fans will have been expecting the news for some time now – following actor Steve Halliwell’s sad passing late last year. The show has finally caught up to reality, and Zak’s funeral scenes are set to air in the coming weeks.

Emmerdale spoilers: The Dingles learn that Zak has died

But, this being a Dingle family funeral, the event won’t go by without drama of its own. And recent Emmerdale spoilers have confirmed that there will be a surprise face or too at Zak’s funeral.

This was seemingly confirmed by actor Jeff Hordley, who revealed yesterday (Monday, October 7): ‘It’s someone you might know. They’re not going to make things go smoothly for the Dingles.’

But who will be paying the Dingles a visit?

    Debbie Dingle

Of all the characters it’d make sense to return for Zak’s funeral, granddaughter Debbie – offspring of Cain and Charity – is a no-brainer.

Unfortunately, due to behind-the-scenes friction between the actress and the soap, Charley Webb’s return to Emmerdale seems unlikely at best.

However, that hasn’t stopped fans from hoping for her return.

“Debbie with a new head. How many heads has Ben Eastenders had so far last count?,” asked one fan, suggesting that producers might re-cast the character.

“Wanna say Debbie but Charley won’t be coming back unless she’s recast which is a shame cos she’s the OG Debbie,” bemoaned another.

Interestingly, Jeff hinted that the returning character could be someone coming back from the dead. While an EastEnders-style resurrection seems unlikely, Zak’s beloved wife Lisa could return in a poignant graveside cameo.

“Maybe the return is Lisa the ghost like when Jack appeared at his funeral but obviously Jane can film a scene in person. I’d love a scene between Lisa and Belle,” suggested one fan.

Mild-mannered Emily was the husband of Zak’s late son, Butch. Taking a job at the Post Office, she met and soon warmed to Butch, beginning their sweet romance.

It ended tragically, however, when Butch was fatally injured during a terrible car chase between him and Emily’s protective father, John. Butch and Emily were married on his deathbed, with Butch passing shortly after they said their vows.

Although Emily re-married – to vet Paddy – she remained close to the Dingles. It would make sense if Emily were to return to pay her last respects to beloved father figure Zak.

“If Emily is not the Dingle returning then I don’t want it,” huffed one fan on X.

    Kathy Glover

She may not have been a Dingle, but Kathy Glover is an undeniable part of Emmerdale history, with links to all of the soap’s most iconic figures – from Zak himself to Seth, Butch and Alan.

“With Zak’s death and funeral next week, now would have been the right time for a small return for Kathy Glover. She could have spoke about Butch, Seth, Alan and of course come face to face with Kim Tate again,” suggested one hopeful viewer.

    Ross Barton

It has already been confirmed that Ross Barton will be returning to the soap later this year. With Debbie unlikely to be returning, and Ross having so many Dingle ties (including son Moses, who he shared with Charity), could this be the character’s foot back in the door?

  • Sarah Sugden’s younger years: The war between the Sugdens and the Dingles

Sarah Sugden’s younger years: The war between the Sugdens and the Dingles

Sarah Sugden is the troublesome, troubled teenage daughter of Debbie Dingle and Andy Sugden. She’s a big sister to her ‘saviour sibling’ Jack – who lives in Scotland with their mum – and has a lot of uncles: Charity’s sons Noah, Moses and Ryan and Cain’s son’s Nate, Isaac and Kyle.

Sarah’s also the adopted cousin of Victoria’s son, Harry.

So when it comes to being at the heart of Emmerdale, Sarah‘s right in the thick of both the Sugden and Dingle dynasties!

    Emmerdale: Sarah Sugden’s arrival

Sarah arrived unexpectedly! Her mum – Debbie Dingle – was just 15 years old and had hidden her pregnancy from everyone.

She had fallen pregnant after a brief romance with older teenager Andy Sugden, but hadn’t told him either!

Debbie gave birth in a barn and planned to abandon her baby at the hospital.

But of course, the shocking arrival didn’t stay secret for long! Daz Tittensor ran for help and found Emily Kirk – Debbie’s foster mother.

Emily helped deliver the tot and Debbie named her daughter Sarah Charity – after her two grandmothers. Emily had been about to leave Emmerdale after discovering her husband Paddy had cheated. But when Debbie had the baby, she decided to stay in the village after all, and help Debbie care for Sarah.

And that’s when things started to go wrong!

    Hard decisions

With Debbie struggling to cope, she turned to foster mother Emily Kirk for support.

Emily was glad to help out but Cain was annoyed and accused her of interfering, and Emily decided enough was enough – she was leaving the village.

When Debbie found out Emily was going, she begged her to take baby Sarah with her.

Emily agreed and left the village with Sarah and though Cain tried to track her down, he couldn’t.

    Returning to Emmerdale

A year later Emily and Sarah came back to Emmerdale, and Emily gave the tot to her dad, Andy.

Emily was shunned by the village, who called her a child-snatcher, and she even tried to end her own life.

Debbie agreed that Andy could keep Sarah, as long as she wasn’t part of her daughter’s life. Emily moved away and things settled down.

    Andy, Jo and Debbie

By now Sarah was a toddler and Andy was engaged to Jo Stiles. Debbie told the couple she’d be happy for Jo to adopt little Sarah. But when it came to signing the papers, Debbie couldn’t do it!

When Andy went to prison, Jo let Debbie spend time with Sarah. When Andy found out, he was FUMING and ended up hitting Jo – starting months of abuse.

Jo confided in Debbie, Andy moved out, and Jo left Emmerdale.

    More arguments!

The Dingles tried to persuade Debbie to get custody of her daughter, but Debbie was worried about the part she’d played in the murder of policeman Shane Doyle, and refused.

Andy kept custody of Sarah when Debbie was sent to jail. When she came home she wanted to see her daughter, but Andy refused and even tried to run off to Spain. Debbie stopped him and she eventually won full custody of Sarah after Jo made a statement about Andy’s violence towards her.

Since then, Sarah’s lived first with Debbie, and now with grandmother Charity.

Paddy Kirk in Emmerdale: The loveable vet’s troubled love life and mental health battle

Paddy Kirk in Emmerdale is one of the soap’s best loved and iconic characters. His friendship with Marlon Dingle, rollercoaster love life, comedy moments and hard-hitting emotional storylines have made Paddy an Emmerdale legend.

Now he’s busy planning his second wedding to ex-wife and rekindled old flame, Mandy Dingle.

Who is Paddy Kirk in Emmerdale?

Paddy’s the son of Barbara, and Bear Wolf – a former wrestler who only reconnected with his son in recent years.

He has one daughter – Eve – with ex-wife Chas Dingle. Their first baby girl, Grace, lived only for an hour after she was born.

He’s also a father figure to Chas’s son, Aaron.

    Paddy’s arrival

Paddy came to Emmerdale way back in 1997 as a locum vet to cover for Zoe Tate. He hit it off with Mandy, though his mum Barbara didn’t approve.

When Mandy married her cousin Butch as a way to stop the family being evicted, Paddy was heartbroken. But they eventually got it together and tied the knot.

    Paddy’s love life

Paddy and Mandy were happy for a while but when her dad got ill she had to spend time away looking after her half-siblings. And she eventually began an affair with her dad’s carer. She and Paddy split.

Paddy found comfort in sweet Emily Dingle – Butch’s widow – and they started a romance. They walked down the aisle and became foster parents, caring for many children including Debbie Dingle.

But Paddy had an affair with Viv Hope. And when Emily found out, she left the village for good.

Next, Paddy started a romance with Chas Dingle – nothing like keeping it in the family, eh? He got close to her son, Aaron, and helped him when he was struggling with his sexuality.

Chas cheated on Paddy and the pair split.

Paddy moved on, falling for fellow vet Rhona Goskirk, who’d been in a relationship with Paddy’s bestie Marlon. Awks! Oh, and she was pregnant with Marlon’s baby.

Somehow, the trio made it work, though, despite Rhona’s painkiller addiction.

But when Paddy cheated with Tess Harris, it all fell apart.

And eventually, Paddy got back together with ex-girlfriend Chas.

    Baby Grace

Chas and Paddy were surprised but delighted when they found out Chas was pregnant. But their joy turned to devastation when they were told their unborn baby had bilateral renal agenesis and wouldn’t survive long after birth.

They decided to continue the pregnancy, and in heartbreaking scenes, their baby was born, only to die shortly afterwards. The pair imagined the life their daughter Grace would have had.

Later, the pair were nervous but thrilled to discover Chas was pregnant again and their daughter Eve was born in 2019. Chas and Paddy tied the knot in a Christmas wedding in 2020, but their marriage fell apart when Chas cheated with Al Chapman.

    Paddy’s depression

Last year, after the collapse of his marriage, the death of Aaron’s sister Liv, and losing baby Grace, Paddy fell into severe depression. He even considered taking his own life.

With the help and support of his friends, he’s got through the darker times.

He’s now engaged to Mandy and the pair are busy planning their second wedding.

Who plays Paddy Kirk in Emmerdale?

Paddy is played by Dominic Brunt. Dominic is married to actress Joanne Mitchell (who played Liv’s mum, Sandra) and the pair have two children.

In real life, Dom is close to his co-star Mark Charnock, who plays his on-screen best friend Marlon. The pair share a love of zombie films and run a zombie film festival each year in Leeds.
