Ever since Joe Tate made his Emmerdale return, fans have been shocked at just how much Kim trusts him. But it seems she has finally opened her eyes.
Last night’s episode (January 23) saw Charity’s words get through to Kim when she warned her about Joe. Up until now, Kim has been grateful for Joe’s presence and has even put him back in the business.
One person who never forgave Joe is Charity. And so, after she gave Kim some advice – the old Home Farm icon came back. And Kim bugged Joe’s room.

Joe Tate has a secret in Emmerdale
We know Joe has been hiding something ever since he returned. Last night he was forced to confess to Dawn what was going on.
After she found him unconscious in his car, he told her that he needed painkillers to deal with headaches he gets as a result of the head injury Cain gave him years ago.
Dawn tried to make him see that he was addicted to the drugs. So in true Joe fashion, he threatened to tell Billy that they had slept together. But is that really what’s wrong with him?
But now, as Kim has bugged his room, it seems we may get our answers sometime soon. And she may find out about him and Dawn. However, fans are just glad to have the old Kim back – it’s about time!

Fans hail Queen Kim’s return
For a while, we began to worry that Kim truly had gone too soft. But slowly, over the last few months, we have seen the return of the Home Farm queen.
And as fans expressed on social media, they couldn’t be happier. Especially if it means Billy finds out about Dawn and Joe…
One wrote: “I knew Queen Kim wasn’t stupid! Can’t wait to see what she is going to do next. Scrounger Dawn’s time is up!”
Another added: “Go Kim. I knew she wasn’t daft.”
A third penned: “OMG is Kim going to find out about Joe and Dawn already? And does this mean we will know what’s really wrong with Joe??”
So exactly what will Kim find? And how would she react if she realises Joe has been keeping a secret? Fans have already pointed out that his death may have been foreshadowed..
Last night’s episode of Emmerdale saw Joe Tate making a secretive phone call as he struggled with his demons and mysterious health issues. This came as his apparent painkiller addiction took its toll.
Dawn was shocked to find Joe passed out in his car (haphazardly parked up in a ditch) with a bottle of pills at his side. He later revealed that he’s been struggling with an addiction to painkillers – assuring her that he’d be seeking help for the problem.
Joe continued: “The thing that I didn’t want to happen… it happened. It’s just it’s getting a bit more obvious now. I don’t know how long I’ve got until people start noticing.”
Little did Joe know, but Kim was listening in on the conversation, having bugged his room. As she listened to the recording later, her eyebrow twitched at the revelation, her curiosity piqued.
But who was Joe on the phone to?
Who was Joe on the phone to? All the Emmerdale fan theories so far
“Joe is definitely sick in some way, guessing that was his private doctor on the phone,” wrote one fan.
“Looks like Joe has a mystery illness and will need a transplant and that’s why he wants to get close to Noah,” said another.
But is the answer really that simple?
Did Graham survive his death? (Credit: ITV/YouTube)
Fans are convinced Graham is alive still
Another theory is that Jamie could be in league with former mentor and father figure Graham Foster. Graham was killed after a fatal run-in with Pierce, but that hasn’t stopped viewers from hoping the fan favourite could be alive.
“I have been convinced graham isn’t dead since he died,” wrote one fan.
Lending credence to this theory is all the talk of Graham of late… plus the framed photo of them both in Joe’s bedroom.
Fans are waiting on a potential Jamie return (Credit: ITV)
Jamie Tate…. or Graham again
Another popular idea is that Joe could be working with devious uncle Jamie Tate. Viewers have been looking out for Jamie’s return ever since he faked his death in 2021 – with viewers convinced he’s been behind every bad thing that’s happened to Kim over the years.
“With Joe, I think he’s colluding with an undead Graham, if not Jamie. Kim will find out. 🫢” another fan predicted.

He’s been covering something up for a while now, but tonight’s episode of Emmerdale seemed to confirm that there’s something seriously wrong with Joe Tate… but is it the painkiller addiction? As he continued to struggle with an apparent addiction to pills, Dawn found him passed out in his car.
Confronting him with the bottle of pills she found at his side, Dawn demanded answers. And Joe was in a state, clearly in no fit state to drive home. But is the painkiller addiction Joe’s real addiction? We think not, and a later phone call seemed to confirm that he’s hiding something else.
What’s wrong with Joe?

Joe’s sick in Emmerdale – and it’s not the painkiller problem
Sobered up, he made his excuses to Dawn, telling her that he was ashamed, but ultimately getting help for his painkiller addiction. He then snuck off, alone, into a secluded room where he made a furtive phone call.
“Hey… we’ve got a problem,” he said to the mystery figure on the other end of the line.
“The thing that I didn’t want to happen… it happened. It’s just it’s getting a bit more obvious now. I don’t know how long I’ve got until people start noticing.”
While this could have been Joe discussing the more unpleasant side-effects of a painkiller addiction, it’s more likely that Joe’s drug dependance is down to a deeper issue… and that he’s clearly covering up with his lies to Dawn.

Joe’s lying about his painkiller addiction – but what does he want from Noah?
When not hooking up with Dawn or downing drugs, Joe has spent a lot of effort trying to get into half-brother Noah’s good books. This has led some viewers to speculate that he might be suffering from kidney failure… which is where Noah comes in.
“Joe wants an organ off Noah,” wrote one fan on X last night.
“Bet Joe is buttering up Noah because he’s in need of an organ donor,” said another.
“Think Joe has kidney failure,” suggested a third.
Gifting Noah a watch from their father, the late Chris Tate, Joe is keen to get Noah on side for… something. The popular theory is an organ or liver transplant, but there’s always a chance he could be genuine in his desire to make things right.
Organ failure? a brain tumour like his dad’s? Issues related to the bang on the head he took as he left the village the first time around? Joe’s covering for something – and it’s only a matter of time before the truth is revealed.

Kim’s onto Joe
What Joe doesn’t know is that Kim is now aware of his issues, having recorded his private conversation.
And, knowing Kim Tate as we do, it’s surely only a matter of time before she gets to the truth of the matter.

With half the village out to get him, someone finds Anthony dead in Emmerdale spoilers tonight (Thursday, January 23). Anthony has had a rollercoaster of a week, first being bashed over the head by Laurel during a confrontation with Nicola, then threatened with a gun by Caleb. And, as he managed to wriggle free of one Dingle retribution, he was cornered ‘for a chat’ by Aaron.
It’s a long list of suspects – but who really killed Anthony?
Elsewhere, Dawn finds Joe Tate unconscious in his car. And, as her betrayal begins to eat her up inside, Dawn prepares to confess to Billy about her infidelity.
And, with Anthony still missing, Nicola’s visit to A& E raises suspicions.
Read our Emmerdale spoilers tonight in full below.

4. Nicola raises suspicions in Emmerdale spoilers tonight
In last night’s episode of Emmerdale Joe and Dawn took things up a notch and shared yet another kiss. And it looked like they weren’t planning on stopping.
But as another potential affair looks set to hit the village, in our opinion it’s time Dawn leaves Billy behind and focuses on something new. Because let’s face it, they were getting a bit boring.
While the Joe and Dawn plot may have been a predictable call from fans early on, it’s not really a surprise that it happened. And we know exactly who we would choose if we were Dawn.

Joe vs Billy
When Dawn first arrived in the village she brought a lot more than she does now. Since marrying Billy, it seems both their characters have taken different paths. And while at the start they worked together, we’re not quite sure they do anymore.
It could be very easy to just sweep it under the rug and continue playing happy families for the sake of their kids. But they haven’t been happy in a while.
Billy would be Dawn’s safe option. Her husband. The father of her kids. But would that be enough to keep her happy? The pair have been at odds with each other quite a lot recently.
From Billy’s secret fight club with Ross, to him not wanting to move back into Home Farm, it just hasn’t seemed like the characters work anymore. And a lot of fans have called for them to break up already.
As for Joe, he is most certainly the unpredictable and exciting route for Dawn. He has only been back in the show for one month and already has made such an impact for us viewers.
When news first dropped that he was returning, Emmerdale fans went wild as it’s something they’ve been asking for since his exit. And in a short time he has already made Dawn seem like there’s still that old character we used to love inside. So could he bring it out further?
Have Dawn and Billy run their course? (Credit: ITV)
Emmerdale: Could Joe make Dawn more exciting?
Obviously if Dawn gets herself attached to Joe, there is the mystery of what’s actually going on with him. He seems to be hiding a secret illness. So could he be lining her up to have her heart broken?
While Joe brings danger, he also brings excitement. And we do know he is good with kids (he used to be basically a step-dad to Sarah) – even though he doesn’t seem like the family man.
And honestly, when Billy finds out (it’s inevitable in soaps) this could even help his character get out of his repetitive funk.
The best course of action for Dawn is to truly sit and think if she’s happy with Billy, because we don’t think she is. And perhaps Joe is the one who could bring out her fun side once again.

Since his Christmas return, fans have been trying to work out what is going on with Joe Tate in Emmerdale, and it seems one line from an episode has caused many viewers a lot of worry that his death might be on the horizon.
Joe’s behaviour has had us all wondering if he is sick. From the attacks of pain he has when he is on his own to the painkillers he seems to be taking a lot of – he has all the signs of someone who is ill.
And after a comment he made this week, fans can’t help but think the soap has just given the biggest clue that Joe is going to die. But if he really is sick, then why has he returned to Emmerdale?

Is Joe in Emmerdale going to die?
In Monday night’s episode, Joe bonded with Noah some more by giving him a watch that belonged to his dad – the only thing he has left of him. The true emotion that Joe showed really makes us believe he wants to stay close to Noah.
He told his little brother that when he wears the watch he ‘hopes you can be reminded of us.’ That line in itself was enough to cause concern. Joe got emotional and apologised to Noah for not being there for him, and assured him he was ready for ‘big brother duties.’ But it wasn’t that which worried viewers.
When Noah was telling him he does want him to be in his life, Joe was emotionally happy. But he added: ‘I’m not going anywhere. I promise.’
Soaps are good at using subtle lines to foreshadow things to come. And fans didn’t miss this one. If people weren’t concerned about Joe in Emmerdale before, then they definitely are now!
Immediately viewers took to X to see if anyone else picked up on the subtle foreshadowing, and expressed their worries that we will lose Joe Tate.

Fans fear for Joe
One wrote: “I’m guessing Joe is going to die then after that scene with Noah.”
Another worried fan penned: “Another gorgeous Joe and Noah scene last night. But I fear a Joe Tate death was foreshadowed.”
If he is dying, then him giving the last thing he has that belonged to their dad to Noah may have been his way of tying up some loose ends.
With many theories on what’s actually wrong with him, fans are still in the dark. But some have suggested he may need a transplant and that’s the real reason he’s bonding with Noah…

Caleb threatened Anthony with a gun, but who was shot? (Credit: ITV)
1. Who was shot?
During Tuesday’s episode, Caleb Miligan played Russian Roulette with Anthony. He warned his father-in-law that he would shoot him unless he confessed to what he had done to Ruby.
Wanting to get the upper hand, Anthony told Caleb that Ruby slept with Cain.
A tussled ensued between Caleb and Anthony, before a gunshot was heard. Cain Dingle, who had just arrived, rushed in. Tonight, viewers will discover who got shot.

3. Charity threatens Joe
Joe previously gave Noah a family heirloom in the form of a watch. When Charity spots this watch, she knows it has something to do with Joe Tate and is not happy.
Charity then visits Home Farm to return the watch and she warns Joe once again to stay away from her son.
Later, we see Joe struggling to maintain consciousness as he sits in his parked car on a deserted country road. Joe has been struggling with his health and taking medication, but what exactly is wrong with him?

Joe gave his younger brother Noah a watch in the soap this week, saying it belonged to their dad, Chris, and he wanted Noah to have it. There’s a long history with Joe Tate, his mum and dad in Emmerdale, years before Noah came along.
While the jury’s still out on whether Joe Tate can be trusted or not, there’s no denying that he’s pulling out all the stops to make it up to his brother.
But how are the young men related? Who was their dad? Did Emmerdale’s Joe Tate share a mum and dad with Noah? And where is he now?
Emmerdale’s Joe Tate was born to mum Rachel and dad Chris
Joe was born in 1995, to mum Rachel Hughes and dad Chris Tate. When Rachel was heavily pregnant, her stepdad Joe Sugden was killed in a car accident and the shock sent her into labour. She named the baby Joseph in his memory.
Annie Sugden – Joe’s mum – inherited his share of the farm and gifted it to baby Joseph for him to receive on his 18th birthday. Whether that means he now owns some of the village, we’re not sure!

Where is Joe’s mum, Rachel, now?
After divorcing Chris, single mum Rachel met widowed teacher Graham Clark. She fell hard for him and he seemed perfect for her.
But slowly he began controlling Rachel in small, then bigger, ways. He made her change her clothes and her hair, and even rearranged the furniture in her cottage.
When Rachel found a photo of Graham’s late wife Rebecca, she was shocked to see he was trying to make her look more like Rebecca.
Graham’s abusive behaviour stepped up, and he even got poor Rachel arrested, and suspended from work.
He wanted them to move away though Rachel wasn’t keen and she started to plan to leave him.
She confronted him on a picnic, only for them to argue as she twigged that Rebecca hadn’t taken her own life but had instead been murdered – by Graham!
But it was too late. Graham pushed Rachel over the cliff to her death.
After Frank’s death, Kim kept a share of the Tate businesses, much to Chris’s annoyance. He tried to take revenge on her but she clobbered him with a paperweight and escaped the village with her then baby son, James.

Chris and his wives
Chris was married to Kathy Merrick, whose second husband Dave Glover had a steamy affair with Kim. He then married Rachel, and after their divorce he married Charity Dingle, who was 12 years his junior.
Chris and Charity’s marriage was fiery! When Debbie Jones was revealed to be Cain and Charity’s daughter, it led Chris to be paranoid that Charity was cheating on him.
Which did actually turn out to be true!
Chris made it look like Charity had killed him (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)
Did Charity murder Chris Tate in Emmerdale?
When Chris was diagnosed with a terminal brain tumour, he started to plot. He started spending his money as quickly as he could, so Charity couldn’t get her hands on it.
He invited Charity for a drink to toast the ‘death of their marriage’ and then poisoned himself, setting her up for murder! His last word was “whore”.
Joe’s trying to win over Noah (Credit: ITV)
Charity’s pregnancy
At the time of Chris’s death, Charity was pregnant, though Chris didn’t know. Charity wasn’t sure if her baby daddy was Chris, Cain, or her cousin Marlon, who she’d slept with once (urgh – talk about keeping it in the family).
She had baby Noah in prison after she was sentenced to life for killing Chris, and found out Noah was in fact a Tate after all, and not a double Dingle.
Always one for a deal, Charity agreed that she would hand over the tot to Chris’s sister, Zoe, in exchange for £10,000 and the proof that Chris killed himself that would set her free. Zoe agreed. She renamed Noah Christopher and planned to adopt him.
But Zoe already had her own daughter Jean, and the care of her orphaned nephew, Joseph. Plus she suffered from mental health issues and she was responsible for running Home Farm, too. Her application was turned down.
Charity was given the choice of having Noah adopted by a stranger or raising him herself and she chose to raise him herself.
Meanwhile Joseph and his cousin Jean, went to live in New Zealand when Zoe decided to start a new life.
Emmerdale’s Joe Tate shares dad with Noah Dingle but not his mum
Chris was dead by the time Noah was born in 2004, and in 2005, Charity took Noah to live in Spain for a while.
By the time they returned to the village in 2009, Joe was long gone.
So the brothers hadn’t really met before Joe came back to Emmerdale as an adult in 2017.
