As Jacob looks set to become a dad, Emmerdale star Joe-Warren Plant admits: ‘This might be the kick Jacob needs’

Jacob is in a bad place, according to Joe-Warren Plant, who plays the troubled med student in Emmerdale. The heartbreaking death of his mum Leyla has taken its toll. He’s lonely, isolated, working hard on his medical studies and generally burning the candle at both ends.

It’s a testing time for the wannabe doctor. So we caught up with Joe-Warren, who plays Jacob, to find out what’s going on with his alter ego.

Is Sarah the one for Jacob in Emmerdale?

One bright spot in Jacob’s life is Sarah – until this week when he cruelly rejects her just as she thinks she could be pregnant.

So is Jacob just lashing out under the stress of planning his mum’s funeral? Or has he decided Sarah isn’t the one for him after all?

“His feelings for Sarah are definitely genuine,” says Joe-Warren. “Over the last few weeks and months even he’s been struggling with his placement on A&E, he’s not got off to the best start there, but he does genuinely care about Sarah. It’s nice to see their relationship grow.”

    Jacob’s going off the rails

Though Jacob’s feelings are genuine, his behaviour this week doesn’t bode well for poor Sarah. He’s having trouble coping with Leyla’s death, he’s been sent home from the hospital because he’s finding it too hard, and so he meets up with new friend Rich to get drunk.

He even invites a load of random people from uni to a party at Leyla’s house. So is Rich trouble for Jacob?

“They have a lot in common, but with the pressures that the job brings it opens people up to coping mechanisms,” explains Joe-Warren.  “Jacob can be easily led. Rich is a good friend to Jacob, but he’s been taking them down the wrong path.”

Though when Jacob decides to throw a party,  it’s Rich who questions the wisdom of doing such a foolish thing the night before his mum’s funeral and at her house.

But Jacob’s hurt that his dad David – who owns the cottage – isn’t coming to the funeral and he doesn’t care.

“Jacob’s been having difficulties being authentic with his emotions,” says Joe-Warren. “He’s got a lot on his plate. he’s not the best at communicating, it’s eating away at him. He is burning the candle at both ends. But he’s got a good heart.”

    Baby blues?

Meanwhile, Sarah’s got worries of her own. She thinks she could be pregnant.

How would Jacob react if Sarah is expecting his baby?

“Obviously it would come as a shock,” Joe-Warren laughs. “I think if he asked himself if he’s ready to be a father he’d probably say no, but actually  it might be the turning point Jacob needs in his life. It might be the kick Jacob needs to get himself into a better position.”

Could a baby encourage Jacob to ditch the booze and make a go of things with Sarah?

“He’d really want to step up and do the things that he himself didn’t have growing up,” says Joe-Warren.

More drama to come for Jacob in Emmerdale says Joe-Warren Plant

It seems with Leyla’s death, Sarah’s possible pregnancy and Jacob’s medical training, Jacob’s got a lot to deal with. And he’s very isolated without his mum Leyla (played by Roxy Shahidi), or his dad David – who was played by Matthew Wolfenden – in the village.

And it’s not easy for Joe-Warren either! He’s played Jacob, alongside Roxy and Matthew since he was a child. He’s been in the show for 15 years – more than half his life.

“Now Matthew and Roxy have gone it’s heartbreaking,” he admits. “But it’s allowed me to work with other people. People I don’t usually have scenes with. It’s been a breath of fresh air really. It’s nice to see what dynamics Jacob has with different characters as well. Rather than being the son of Leyla, it’s nice to play something different.”

Luckily, there’s a family reunion on the horizon. “We’re due to go out for lunch very soon,” he says. “And me and Roxy went down to see Matthew in panto.”

And Joe-Warren says there’s a lot more drama in store for Jacob. “There’s lots more coming up,” he teases.

    We can’t wait!

Joe-Warren Plant ‘goes official’ with new girlfriend in ‘loved-up’ social media post

Emmerdale star Joe-Warren Plant has seemingly confirmed that he is in a relationship with a new girlfriend, after a sweet snap was shared on social media.

Joe split from his partner of two years last year, but it appears romance is on the cards for him again.

Who does Joe-Warren play in the soap?

Joe has played Jacob Gallagher since 2010, landing the role when he was just 8-years-old. He arrived as the son of Alicia Gallagher, before later discovering that his real mum was Alicia’s sister, Leyla.

His biggest storyline saw Jacob groomed by teacher Maya Stepney, who was also the girlfriend of Jacob’s stepdad, David.

Jacob was devastated when Maya was sent to prison, but he later came to the realisation that Maya had abused him.

More recently, Jacob has been studying to be a doctor and took part in a special episode, which highlighted the struggles of working in a busy A&E department.

In terms of his love life, Jacob has become something of a player – angering fans over his treatment of women. He looked to be getting close to Sarah Sugden, before putting the brakes on it and spending the night with fellow medic Sian.

Joe-Warren Plant ‘confirms’ relationship status with new girlfriend

While things are a little messy for Jacob on screen, actor Joe-Warren appears to have it sorted at home.

On his Instagram story, Joe shared a picture showing him looking cosy with a girl. The brunette was tagged as Isabella – though her Instagram account is private.

The Sun has reported that Isabella is Joe’s new girlfriend.

This comes after he split up from long-term ex Anna Norton back in September. The two had been together for over two years and bought a house together.

Now though, Joe looks to be happy in a new relationship!

Emmerdale review of the week: Flashforwards, Jacob’s first day and April’s not dead

It’s a new year and that means our Emmerdale review this week is full to the brim of new drama. It’s been quite the week, hasn’t it? What with flashforwards, special eps, April’s ‘death’ and Ruby’s revelations.

Here’s what we thought of the non-stop action in our Emmerdale review.

Cain holds his head in his hands in one of the Emmerdale flashforwards (Credit: ITV)
Cain is mourning but who’s dead? (Credit: ITV)

    The flashforwards

As Big Ben chimed in 2025, we were treated to five flashforwards teasing what was going to happen in Emmerdale this year. We saw Mack running through the woods looking scared, Caleb in hospital flatlining, and Cain standing next to a grave with a floral display spelling a word that was frustratingly unreadable no matter how many times we zoomed in on the screengrab or flipped the picture.

We also saw two more snapshots of the future – a body wrapped in plastic being thrown over the bridge, and terrifyingly someone trapped under the ice.

So what does it all mean? Are all five flashforwards parts of one story or are they different plots? Is Caleb going to die? Who’s under the ice? While some of the glimpses into the future were less exciting (Mack running for example) some of them have already got us gripped.

    Kim Tate looking serious
Why is Kim being so trusting when it comes to Joe Tate? (Credit: ITV)

Emmerdale review: Kim and Joe’s surprise truce

Back in the present day, poor Kim is still grieving the unexpected death of husband Will. We love Kim, obvs, and so it is with reluctance that we feel obliged to point out that she’s being a bit of a wet blanket. Joe Tate is skulking around pretending to care and Kim’s just going along with it. We get that he knows she froze when Will first collapsed, and she feels guilty, but come on – it’s hardly the crime of the century is it? It’s far from being the worst thing Kim’s ever done. Why is she trusting him?

As ever with Kim we’re hoping she knows exactly what’s going on and is playing Joe for a fool. We even thought Will’s death might be a ruse for a while! Could we be right this time?

    Ruby Fox-Miligan
Anthony is tormenting Ruby but no one has noticed (Credit: ITV)

    Anthony and Ruby

We are increasingly convinced that Anthony is not just the worst villain in Emmerdale history but one of the most evil baddies in telly history! He may not have the body count of Meena Jutla or Cameron Murray, but OMG he is so manipulative and frightening.

This week it was Steph’s birthday and once again he used the occasion to taunt, twist and terrify poor Ruby, making her seem unstable and volatile while he came out on top.

Ruby’s really struggling and we liked her confiding in Chas and taking back a tiny bit of control by ordering a DNA test – though we’re scared what the results might say.

But we’re frustrated that no one else seems to see how badly she is reacting to Anthony. Caleb walked in on her crying and didn’t notice. No one stuck up for her when Anthony demanded she cook them all a complicated dinner. And Steph, quite frankly, is being really nasty to her mother. She’s been given a (very nice!) place to live, a job, loads of attention, adoration from her dad and grandfather, and she’s still whining. Come on, Fox-Miligans! Step up.

    Jacob's first day

    Emmerdale review: Jacob’s first day

As if the flashforwards weren’t enough, we were also given a special episode this week, centring on Jacob’s first shift in A&E. We weren’t sure how this would work when we first heard about it – after all, it’s Emmerdale, not Casualty! But actually we thought it was great.

Joe Warren Plant, who plays Jacob, did a smashing job of holding it all together and we really saw the pressures of being a medical student. The doctor in charge was a bit mean, though!

Marlon and Rhona go to identify 'April'

    April’s not dead!

One thing we didn’t love so much was the mix-up with everyone thinking April was dead. Though the blame for the error was firmly put on Jacob, we’re not convinced everyone in the hospital would have gone along with it so easily without, you know, checking.

It all felt a bit like a cheap plot device to torment Marlon and Rhona and we reckon it could have been just as dramatic and heart-wrenching done in a different way.

    Marlon and Rhona look despairing
Marlon’s being really horrible (Credit: ITV)

    Marlon’s a git

And while we’re on the subject, Marlon is getting on our wick. We know he’s worried about April, we get it. But he is being, in his own words, “a git”. He is blaming everyone else. He is shouting, pointing fingers, making it all about himself…

It’s quite hard to feel sympathy for him right now.

We do, however, feel a lot of sympathy for poor Mary who is keeping everything going behind the scenes, looking after Invisible Ivy and making tea and generally being an all-round trooper.

We’re as baffled as you are, Laurel (Credit: ITV)

Emmerdale review: Marlon and Laurel revelations

And what’s with these revelations about Marlon and Laurel? Firstly, we’re confused about the timeline. Marlon seemed to tell Rhona that it all happened just before Christmas. But the police officer said April had seen a few messages on Marlon’s phone that made her suspicious.

And the one person we’ve not heard from is Laurel herself. What does she have to say about all this? Did it happen as Marlon has said, or is there more to it?

  • Jacob Gallagher in Emmerdale: Secret identity, abuse horror, and a forbidden romance

Jacob Gallagher in Emmerdale: Secret identity, abuse horror, and a forbidden romance

Jacob Gallagher in Emmerdale has been part of village life since he was young lad.

Having grown up before viewers eyes, Jacob‘s had an eventful life. He’s endured family dramas, been groomed by his teacher and had an affair with his dad’s ex-girlfriend.

Born on February 28, 2003, Jacob is the biological son of Leyla Harding and Justin Gallagher. Jacob was conceived after Leyla had an affair with Justin, who was her sister Alicia’s husband.

He was adopted by Alicia who, unable to conceive, raised him as her own.

Jacob considers Alicia’s former husband, David Metcalfe, to be his dad, and refers to him as that.

He has two half-siblings, Amba and Theo Metcalfe, who no longer live in the Dales.

Jacob excelled at school and is currently in higher education studying to be a doctor.

Who plays Jacob Gallagher in Emmerdale?

Jacob Gallagher in Emmerdale is played by British actor Joe-Warren Plant. He was born on April 12, 2002, and raised in Poulton-le-Fylde by parents Warren and Steph Plant.

Joe-Warren became a student at Blackpool’s Scream Theatre School when he was four-years-old. The actor then joined the Emmerdale cast aged eight and was introduced as part of a new family.

As a youngster, Joe-Warren balanced his filming commitments with studying at Baines School in his home town.

In 2021, Joe-Warren took a six month break from Emmerdale to appear on Dancing on Ice.

    Jacob’s arrival in Emmerdale

Jacob and Alicia arrived in the village in 2010. He was seven-years-old, but still had no idea his Auntie Leyla was actually his mum.

Alicia began dating David Metcalfe, who Jacob grew to love like a real father. In 2013, Jacob discovered Alicia wasn’t his birth mum and ran away for the night.

The truth about Leyla left Jacob angry and confused with the world, but he eventually adapted.

    Bullying hell

Jacob has had an on/off friendship with local lad Noah Dingle. Noah made Jacob’s life hell in 2014 by waging a bullying campaign against him.

The nasty lad forced Jacob to vandalise Bernice Blackstock’s beauty salon and steal money from the church. Jacob got caught red-handed, but admitted to Alicia and David that Noah had forced him to do it.

The couple informed Noah’s mum, Charity Dingle, who punished her son. Jacob and Noah eventually made up and continued to be mates.

    Jacob’s dramatic exit

Jacob’s world was turned upside down in 2015 after learning Alicia had been sexually assaulted by unhinged Lachlan White. In an act of revenge, Jacob trashed Home Farm.

Traumatised Alicia decided to leave the village and took Jacob to live with her in Portugal. David stayed put, and he and Jacob lost touch for a while.

A year later, Jacob sneaked back to Emmerdale without telling Alicia, but David and Leyla convinced her to let him stay.

Everything was rosy until David discovered he had testicular cancer. Too scared to tell Jacob the truth, he banished the teen back to Portugal.

Jacob was back again soon enough and was hurt to discover David had lied to him about his illness. However, he was persuaded by David’s girlfriend Tracy Shankley to stick around and help his dad. David went on to make a full recovery.

    Abuse hell

Another dark period in Jacob’s life was when he fell victim to predatory Maya Stepney. She was one of his secondary school teachers and they began dating. Maya also happened to be in a relationship with David by this point.

Maya groomed Jacob and they began a secret relationship, at her request. When Jacob turned 16, Maya took his virginity.

Their affair was rumbled by Jacob’s ex Liv Flaherty, who tried to blackmail Maya for £10,000.

The truth all came out when Priya Sharma spied Jacob and Maya kissing outside a nightclub in Hotten and informed Leyla. Maya and Jacob ran away, but the police caught up with her and arrested her.

Still believing the love he and Maya had was real, it took Jacob a long while to realise he’d been abused.

Another shock was in store when Jacob and David found a baby boy on their doorstep on Christmas Day 2019. A note revealed the tot was Maya’s son, and Jacob feared he could be the father.

A DNA test later confirmed the child was David’s, and he was named Theo.

    A messy love triangle

After Maya, Jacob had a one-night stand with classmate Leanna Cavanagh. He was devastated when she was murdered by Meena Jutla.

Jacob’s next romantic interest caused a storm in the village. He fell in love with Victoria Sugden, who happened to be his dad’s ex-girlfriend and nine years his senior.

After confessing their feelings for one another, the unlikely couple began a secret affair. But to make matters even more complicated, David had decided he still loved Vic and wanted her back.

When David discovered Jacob had won her heart he was sickened. Unable to forgive what he perceived to be a massive betrayal, David fled the village, leaving Jacob wracked with guilt.

Sadly the romance with Victoria wasn’t to be and she dumped him, leaving Jacob heartbroken.

Jacob Gallagher takes centre stage in Emmerdale this New Year

The medical student will play a key role in storylines for 2025 as he is the focus of a special standalone episode on Thursday January 2.

It is Jacob’s first day on his student placement at A&E and he struggles when it all goes rather wrong and he’s reprimanded. Will Jacob question his abilities?

He is stressed when a stab victim comes in and he worries it might be April. He calls Marlon who rushes to the hospital and Jacob’s supervisor is not happy with Jacob at all.

Then Charity arrives with drunk Sarah, who Jacob is in the beginnings of a romance with.

Jacob then bonds with an elderly patient who offers comfort to Jacob over his situation. Will it give him the courage to carry on?
