Is Emmerdale’s John Sugden a killer? All the evidence that suggests he definitely is

There’s a killer on the loose in Emmerdale – and many have their money on John Sugden. This follows the week’s revelation that Nate is definitely dead; all chained up and bodybagged at the bottom of an icy lake.

Nate’s body was found by Amy, who’d taken an unplanned dip after a girls’ night out went awry, and their limousine found itself crashed on the surface of an ice-covered lake. Falling through the ice, she came face-to-face (well, to-hand) with Nate, who was trapped below.

Identifying Nate by the bracelet on his wrist, Amy regained consciousness long enough to share the news with Matty – although he was a bit distracted by his dying wife, and seemed to miss the news.

But who killed Nate? Many will be suspecting village creep John Sugden, but did he really did it? Here’s all the evidence so far.

Fans think John is hiding his true identity in Emmerdale

John’s been something of an enigma since arriving in the village. Supposedly a long-lost Sudgen, John’s identity has been cast into doubt by a pair of army dog tags emblazoned with another name – Aidan Moore.

Bonding with Aaron on a trip to the woods, John claimed that Aidan had been a former lover – but not everyone believed his version of events. Those tags have led some to speculate that Aidan killed the real John Sugden and has stolen his identity. And if not, then maybe John killed Aidan and is covering up his death. Either way, the Aidan Moore mystery is one which desperately needs solving.

“I feel like he isn’t even John he’s aiden & stole johns identify or he killed aiden & that’s why he kept the dog tags,” wrote one fan on X as the soap aired its Nate revelation this week.

John is too comfortable covering up a death in Emmerdale

When Aaron thought he’d killed Anthony, John leapt into action, disposing of the body and cleaning the crime scene. John may have a military background, but his chill under pressure is highly suspect, regardless.

“He seems to know what’s he doing when it comes to Anthony. Like he’s been in that situation before,” one fan remarked as John set about covering up the murder.

The way Nate’s body was wrapped

Many have noted that the way Nate’s body has been wrapped seems very familiar indeed. When we last saw Anthony, he’d been wrapped up in a similar fashion. Is this John’s killer signature?

“Why is Nate’s body wrapped exactly the same as Anthony’s???? John????” asked one fan last night.

“So tonight confirms that John killed nate, and pretty much that John is a serial killer. Wrapped the body same way as Anthony,” another said.

  • Inside fan theory Caleb is who killed Nate – and John’s just a big red herring

Inside fan theory Caleb is who killed Nate – and John’s just a big red herring

In Emmerdale this week, a mystery body was seen at the bottom of the lake. Fans are convinced the body belongs to Nate Robinson, and a new theory believes Caleb killed him.

While on a night out in a limousine, stand in driver Charity veered off the road when her son Noah staggered out in front of the vehicle.

During the escape, a body was seen in the water. While we haven’t yet discovered who the body belongs to, fans have been speculating.

After Charity swerved the limo off the road, it ended up submerged in a frozen lake.

Charity, Chas, Liam, Vanessa, Kerry, Leyla and Amy made their way from the limo across the ice one by one, while an already dead Suzy was left in the limo as it sunk.

Unfortunately for Amy Barton, the ice started to crack as she approached safety and she sunk into the lake.

While she was underwater, she came face to face with another body. While viewers didn’t see whose body it was, we did see that the mystery person was wearing a friendship bracelet similar to the one little Frankie made for Amy.

Viewers were quick to assume the body belonged to Frankie’s dad Nate Robinson, who left the Dales last year for a job in Scotland. However, fans are now thinking he didn’t leave after all, and instead has been in the lake the whole time.

Fan theory believes Caleb killed Nate

Taking to social media, fans were quick to share their theories. “I think John is a red herring. We’re meant to think it’s him. I maybe think Caleb. He’s the only person in the village who really had a grievance with Nate. Plus he’s nasty and violent when he’s angry.”

A second fan agreed, writing: “Caleb hated Nate, but couldn’t go for him because of Cain. That actually makes sense.”

A third fan said: “Caleb. I think Nate ran into him as he was leaving the village and a fight broke out (about Tracy) and Nate died. I’m not saying it was murder, maybe manslaughter but either way Caleb killed him and let his family (Cain and Frankie) believe he was still alive which is so cruel.”

Another fan added: “Caleb is a hot head that had an affair with another guy’s wife, maybe he killed Nate.” While a fifth fan echoed the thought, writing: “Murderer is Caleb after his affair with Tracey was found out.”

A sixth fan referenced the flashforward scenes which were shown earlier this year, in which Caleb was seen in hospital. They speculated: “People saying the body is Nate – that would explain Cain crying at a graveside and Caleb in hospital – did Caleb kill Nate and Cain finds out?? …. it’s intense, Emmerdale!”

  • John to kill Aaron in a bid to keep Anthony death a secret, a new Emmerdale fan theory predicts

John to kill Aaron in a bid to keep Anthony death a secret, a new Emmerdale fan theory predicts

A new Emmerdale fan theory has predicted that cold-blooded John Sugden may kill Aaron in an attempt to keep his part in Anthony’s death a secret. Neither John nor Aaron were ultimately responsible for Anthony’s death – but their cover-up in the days since left them both implicated.

Last night’s episode of the soap (Thursday, January 30) revealed that it was actually Ruby who killed Anthony, smothering him as he lay dying on the ground. Aaron was stunned to learn that he hadn’t actually killed Anthony – and furious that she and Caleb had kept the truth from him.

As the episode ended, all involved agreed to stay silent. But with Aaron clearly struggling with his conscience, will he be able to hold it together in the face of a police investigation?

A dark new theory has emerged suggesting that John may then kill Aaron in an attempt to keep his own part in the crime a secret.

John to kill Aaron, Emmerdale fans speculate

Writing on Reddit yesterday, fans shared their theories as to how the story might play out. And with many still not trusting John, this could be bad news for Aaron

“What if John kills Aaron to keep the secret of what happened to Anthony… Aaron being the wrapped up body we saw in the flashback, and Cain standing over his grave?” asked one fan.

“That would be a sad ending to a sad life really,” said another in response.

“I hope they don’t kill him off or make John a killer,” a third fretted.

“Aaron crying again, John will be taking him out at this rate, and not in a nice way,” said another viewer, over on X.

    Is Aaron in danger?

Viewers still don’t trust John (Credit: ITV)

What’s John’s game? All the red flags so far

This latest theory comes amid intense speculation over John’s true motives. The former soldier leapt to action in the wake of Aaron’s attack on Anthony – and many felt he was far too comfortable in covering up a murder.

This has led some to believe that John could be harbouring a dark secret of his own – wondering whether he might have actually killed Anthony (since proven to be untrue), or ‘disappeared’ Nate.

Whatever the case, John is clearly all-too comfortable around death, and his ‘controlling’ approach to Aaron only worried fans more. Only time will tell whether John’s heart is in the right place… but for now, Aaron and Ruby should just be glad that he’s on their side.

  • Emmerdale viewers ‘work out’ what John did with Anthony’s body as they notice flashforward detail

Emmerdale viewers ‘work out’ what John did with Anthony’s body as they notice flashforward detail

The real mystery of who in Emmerdale killed Anthony as his death was finally solved last night (Thursday January 30).

After Aaron spent a few days thinking he was responsible for Anthony’s death, in a not-so-surprising twist, he wasn’t.

Viewers were given yet another flashback to the day of the death. We saw that it was actually Ruby who killed her father – a very fitting end. But when she, Aaron, John and Caleb got together to discuss the next steps, fans couldn’t help but wonder about the body.

    Anthony looks scared in Emmerdale

    Emmerdale flashforward

At the beginning of the year, Emmerdale gave us flash-forwards of certain characters. But we had no idea on how they ended up in that state.

And in one of them, there was a wrapped up body being thrown off a bridge. So when Anthony died and John wrapped his body up, that’s what we assumed would happen. But we never actually saw that.

Which brings up a few questions. Where did John put Anthony’s body? And if that wasn’t the death in the flash-forward, is there another murder looming? Fans have thought John may be the next serial killer…

But now, some think that John’s choice of words have shown them exactly where the body may be.

Taking to a reddit thread, viewers debated whether Anthony was buried – or fed to the pigs.

    Emmerdale John looks calm
What did John do with the body? (Credit: ITV)

Emmerdale Anthony death – where is his body?

One wrote: “What has John actually done with Anthony’s body? All I have heard him say is that they don’t need to worry about it?”

A user responded: “Isn’t he meant to be the one pushed in the river?” which someone answered: “We didn’t see that actually happen though.”

Another wrote: “I think the boring answer is he probably buried him in the woods.”

However, others think John had a more sinister plan for Anthony’s body. One that will be much harder to trace back.

“He told Aaron there was nothing left of him to be found. Then said there was no chance of them finding the body. Maybe he put him through Moira’s mincer.”

Another backed this up, adding: “If he was smart, he would have either cut him up to give it to the pigs. Or disintegrate it.”

And John has given the impression that he knows how to cover up a murder. So perhaps there really isn’t a trace of Anthony’s body.

Either way, knowing what actually happened to the vile man, surely he will have to tell someone how he got rid of it?

And who was in the body bag in the flashback?

  • Emmerdale: ‘Controlling’ John ‘the new Tom King’ say fans amid fears for Aaron

Emmerdale: ‘Controlling’ John ‘the new Tom King’ say fans amid fears for Aaron

Emmerdale fans have grown concerned for Aaron, branding John Sugden ‘the new Tom King.’ John’s controlling side has come out as he attempts to protect Aaron from the consequences of killing Anthony.

Cleaning the crime scene and hiding the body, John has been Aaron’s rock. However, viewers have seen another side of John. In addition to handling the situation, he’s also attempted to keep Aaron from spiralling out of control or confessing to Ruby.

Last night’s episode (Wednesday, January 29) saw John remain firm in his stance that Aaron should keep quiet about the attack – Aaron’s own feelings on the matter be damned.

This has kept Aaron out of prison so far, but some have suggested that his behaviour towards Aaron seems a bit familiar… reminiscent, in fact, of one Tom King.

John ‘the new Tom’ suggest Emmerdale fans as he ‘controls’ Aaron

Writing on X as recent scenes aired, fans shared their thoughts on the chilly interplay between John and Aaron. And a few were unsettled by John’s demeanor with Aaron.

“John is the new Tom and Aaron is going to end up being a version of belle, John does like to be in control,” wrote one fan.

“John is really controlling Aaron,” observed another.

“I have to say John really creeped me out he seems very controlling and the differences between him & what Robert would have done is really apparent, John doesn’t know Aaron at all,” said a third.

But what does John’s controlling side mean for Aaron?

    Tom Emmerdale Ofcom Complaints

    What’s John’s game?

No sooner had Tom King been sentenced to prison than Anthony filled the role of village creep. As Tom’s story came to an end, so Ruby’s ramped up. The soap then confirmed that he’d raped her as a teenager.

Anthony is now dead – with Aaron having apparently beaten him to death. John’s willingness to cover up a serious crime had many baffled, pointing out that he might have an ulterior motive.

Many are convinced that John isn’t what he seems – with theories ranging from serial killer to psychopath. Devoted (if slightly creepy) boyfriend or controlling would-be killer? What’s John up to?

John preparing to kill multiple villagers, new fan theory predicts

A new Emmerdale fan theory has predicted that John Sugden is preparing to kill multiple villagers. This comes amid fan speculation that the former soldier is secretly a serial killer plotting his next move.

He and Aaron have spent the week tidying up after Anthony’s death – with Aaron left shouldering the blame after apparently beating the resident monster to death.

Supportive boyfriend John leapt into action, tidying up the crime scene and disposing of Anthony’s body.

To many, John’s coolness under pressure seemed mighty suspect – taking Anthony’s death and the subsequent clean-up in his stride.

John preparing to kill several villagers, predict Emmerdale fans

Writing on X this week, one fan shared their theory that John is a ‘psychopath’ biding his time until he kills again.

“John is definitely a closet psychopath. It’s just a matter of time until he starts killing off the villagers, and there’s plenty to choose from,” this fan suggested.

Meanwhile, speculation is abound that John is set to strike again. And a number of names are already being thrown around. Bad news, then, for Manpreet – who’s high on the list of potential victims.

Who will ‘killer’ John murder next?

“John is making this a lot harder than it needed to be, and now Manpreet is on his psycho radar,” said one fan on X, as Manpreet began to grow suspicious of John and Aaron’s activity in the garage.

“Aaron crying again. John will be taking him out at this rate, and not in a nice way,” said another, suggesting that Aaron might be next.

With fans speculating that John has killed before – including the popular theories that he already murdered Nate and finished off Anthony. With the red flags racking up, John has some way to go to clear his name.

What happened in Emmerdale tonight: Guilty Aaron almost gave into his demons as he begged John to let him confess

Emmerdale tonight saw both Aaron and Laurel almost give into their demons as they struggled to cope with Anthony’s demise. They each stopped short of going through with it, but for how much longer can they resist?

Meanwhile, Amy left Matty blindsided with her baby plans and Kerry tried to help Pollard.

Here’s everything that happened in Emmerdale tonight, Wednesday January 29.

Aaron almost self harmed in Emmerdale tonight

John and Aaron let themselves out of the garage and agreed they had never been there. Tell that to Manpreet, lads. Aaron also wasn’t so keen on forgetting all about it, worried about Ruby.

Back to Manpreet, who was talking to PC Swirling in the cafe. She has been hearing late night noises at the garage. He told her to talk to Cain and if she wanted to report it, she needed to go to Environmental Health not the police. Looks like John and Aaron are in the clear… for now.

Aaron was drinking in the Hide when Ruby arrived and Aaron decided to buy her a beer. Aaron skirted around the issue, wanting to talk about Anthony and her feelings over him. Ruby immediately shut him down and went to leave, just as John arrived.

John stopped Aaron saying any more, but Aaron argued he had robbed Ruby of justice. Emotional blackmail was next on John’s list and that made Aaron stop and think. Although Aaron agreed to keep quiet, he stormed off on John, unhappy with how things were panning out.

So unhappy that, back at home, he was staring at the knives in the kitchen thinking dark thoughts.

Tearfully he picked one up and brought it to his skin. Catching sight of himself in the knife’s reflection, Aaron stopped before cutting himself, but broke down in tears. How much longer can he keep this bottled up?

Matty was faced with a big decision

Matty and Victoria were suspicious of Amy, who was full of the joys of spring and arranging a surprise for Matty. Her surprise was Dale View and she wanted her and Matty to rent it. She then dropped the baby bombshell on him, which left him completely speechless.

He later went to see his mum, but ended up confiding in Cain instead. Matty felt like Amy was making decisions without him. He was worried his child would suffer because of who he is. Cain advised him he would be a good dad and told him nothing else was important if he wanted children.

    Will Matty rethink?

    Laurel almost relapsed

Laurel had bought half the supermarket so the kids were stocked up for when she went to prison. She told Nicola she was going to confess to Ruby and Steph – or go to the police.

Laurel decided the church was her first port of call, where Charles offered to talk, but she decided the church was not the answer after all. What was the answer, she realised, was the booze. Or at least she thought it was, opened the bottle, sniffed it and then poured it all away.

    Also in Emmerdale tonight…

Bob was shaken by the news Heath’s headstone was being erected tomorrow. He confided once again in Manpreet.

Elsewhere, Kerry was worried about Pollard, and Amy advised she get him doing yoga. Apparently, Val used to do it with him and he loved it. Kerry approached him with yoga mats in the shop, but Eric refused.

Is Manpreet the next to die? Emmerdale fans fear John is out to kill her

In Emmerdale John Sugden has become increasingly suspicious. And fans fear they know who his next target is.

When Aaron and John realised that Anthony was dead after Aaron’s brutal beating, John immediately began covering it up for his boyfriend. But some fans think he may have actually had more to do with it than Aaron knows.

The pair managed to get rid of all of Anthony’s belongings, and conveniently Cain decided to close the garage for a few days. This meant they finally had a secure place to store Anthony’s car while Aaron stripped it apart. But just when they thought nobody would be able to place them there, Manpreet heard them outside.

    John is suspicious

In a shock ending to last night’s episode (January 28), Manpreet turned her light on and looked outside just after Aaron and John spoke about how they were free of any evidence.

The couple had ensured no strings were left. Even when John spotted the tooth laying on the ground in the Depot, that managed to get sorted (Thanks to Kerry’s vacuum). So this shock ending has fans wondering if Manpreet actually heard what they spoke about. And they worry for her safety from John if she did.

Viewers have never trusted John. They are convinced he’s lying about something. We just aren’t completely sure what yet. But with the way he knew how to dispose of a body – it certaintly looked like he had done it before.

Fans are now convinced that if (or when) John realises Manpreet may have spotted them, she will be his next target.

One wrote on X: “Manpreet is going to put herself in the firing line of psycho John.”

A third reminded everyone that if something does happen to Manpreet, there’s someone who could return and get revenge; Meena.

They commented: “John if you lay a finger on Manpreet then Meena will come for you.”

Exactly what Manpreet saw or heard is unknown, but it’s not looking good for her if she gets John or Aaron in trouble. And with fans predicting a romance between her and Bob, could it be over before it begins?

John’s ‘real motive’ for wanting Anthony dead ‘worked out’ by Emmerdale fans who think they had a ‘secret link’

As John Sugden continues to look suspicious to Emmerdale fans, many believe they have ‘worked out’ the true reason he may have wanted Anthony dead.

John jumped into hero mode for Aaron when he found out about Anthony’s death. But he definitely gave the impression that he had covered up a murder before.

When John first arrived in Emmerdale, fans immediately did not trust him. And now with the growing theories that he actually killed Anthony, fans think they know why.

    John’s secret link to Anthony

Ever since it was revealed that Anthony had sexually abused Ruby when she was younger, and was actually Steph’s dad, fans have wanted the vile man off their screens. And they got their wish.

Emmerdale aired Anthony’s death last week after Aaron brutally beat him up. But by the time he and John went back to the Depot to check on him, he was dead. However, viewers know there was enough time for someone else to finish the job. And now are just waiting for the twist to be revealed.

With many suspecting John was the one behind the murder, up until now his motives for wanting Anthony dead have been unclear. But fans believe there was a secret link we never knew about.

Viewers have theorised that John Sugden isn’t a Sugden at all. But instead is Ruby’s brother. And they believe that he wanted to deal the final blow to his dad.

Commenting on a Facebook post, one fan wrote: “I think Anthony’s real killer is John? Who turns out to be Ruby’s brother.”

Another backed it up, adding: “I thought a brother had been mentioned previously?”

While a third simply wrote: “Love child maybe?”

The theory not only helps further the Anthony plot, but it also provides fans more knowledge of John. Because let’s face it, there’s something off about him.

    Suspicious John Sugden in Emmerdale

So could John have been protecting his sister from their dad? Or had he also had horrible experiences with Anthony and wanted to get his own revenge?

And if the theory doesn’t come true, there is still a question mark over John.

Most fans agree that he isn’t who he says he is. Some believe he is really the mysterious Aidan Moore, who he said died in Afghanistan. But others believe he killed Aidan, and has a murderous side.

Either way, concern has grown for Aaron as John now has the chance to hold this secret over him.

Meanwhile, Steph was getting on everyone’s nerves (well, ours at least) and Chas was forced to backtrack, sending Laurel spiralling.

Here’s everything that happened in Emmerdale tonight, Tuesday January 28.

John continued to cover up evidence

Aaron was beside himself (still) and John was playing protector (still), insisting that he cleaned up so well, they’d never be connected to the depot.

John popped up to the depot just to find out what was going on with the police being there. He pretended he was doing a health and safety initiative and spotted Anthony’s tooth. But just as he was about to pick it up, Caleb saw him and wanted answers. John spun his defibrillator lie and Caleb bought it, but the tooth remained – until Kerry hoovered it up.

Meanwhile, Jai was on a mission to find out who took the £200 from the petty cash – and it turned out Caleb had. PC Swirling was not impressed with Jai’s officious attitude – and that he had wasted police time.

John was pretty happy to have overheard the news though and went to report to Aaron. But as they talked about having got away with it once Aaron had finished dismantling the car, someone was listening. Manpreet heard it all as John said they were “Home and dry”. But does she know enough to incriminate them? And will John ‘dispose’ of her as well?

    Steph grew increasingly irritating

Steph was wildly panicking about Anthony and leaving him desperate voice messages. She went to get sympathy from Chas, who wasn’t very sympathetic at all, so Steph stomped off. The teenager routine is getting really tired.

Caleb and Ruby were trying to find a way to keep Steph off the trail of Anthony. But she remained determined and has decided to head to Chiswick to find him.

Chas forced to take back her ‘lie’

Chas then went to see Ruby and confessed she had told Nicola and Laurel about Anthony. Ruby insisted Chas take it back and tell them she got it wrong. She can’t risk Steph finding out.

Ruby later encountered Angelica in the shop and asked questions about Anthony’s tutoring. She was relieved to realise nothing untoward had happened.

Chas then went to find Nicola and told her she had got the wrong end of the stick. Laurel was obviously aghast at the news and thinks she’s going to burn in hell. Not if we get to her first for this excessive whining.

Amy wanted a baby in Emmerdale tonight

Amy went to see Tracy to offer to babysit Frankie – awkward given Amy killed Tracy’s dad. But Tracy managed to forget that fact (again) and sent Frankie off with Amy.

Moira joined them and noticed Amy was getting broody. Amy tried to play it down, saying it was complicated, but Moira encouraged her to talk to Matty about it.

    Also in Emmerdale tonight

Pollard was interested in Brenda living at the B&B and questioned an awkward Bob. He was then in a bit of a state when the estate agent called and tried to persuade him to drop the price of the shop. Kerry overheard him on the phone and realised things weren’t okay. But she couldn’t quite make it better, leaving Pollard thoughtful.
