13 best Emmerdale characters – EVER! Heartthrobs, schemers, cheats and living legends!

Emmerdale has been on our screens since 1972, and has seen thousands of characters come and go over the years. Some stay in the soap for just a short stint, and for others it becomes a forever home.
But who are the soaps’ best ever characters? It’s a hard job, but we’ve whittled it down to 13 of our all time favourites, both past and present. So here they are…
    Cain looks aghast

    Cain Dingle

Emmerdale OG bad boy, Cain is always top of the list. We can’t get enough of the sexy rogue.

Always central to any Dingle drama, Cain is the son of former lovers, Zak and Faith, but grew up thinking Shadrach was his father.

He arrived in 2000 as the black sheep of the family and delighted fans with his corrupt carry on.

Cain has had a lot of romantic entanglements during his 20 plus years in the Dales. These include high-stakes affairs with police officer Angie Reynolds and vicar Harriet Finch and a questionable dalliance with teen Amy Wyatt.

But two relationships have shaped him most. The first being his on/off one with cousin, Charity, and the other his passionate marriage to Moira.

Cain is a father of four, by four different women. He and Charity share daughter Debbie. Nate Robinson is Cain’s long-lost son who came into his life as an adult, Kyle Winchester was the result of his fling with Amy, and he has young Isaac with Moira.

The character is Emmerdale’s answer to the terminator. Seriously, the guy is indestructible! Cain has survived attempts on his life, near drowning and a brain tumour. And he’s endured a few stints in prison, the most recent being when he took the rap for Kyle killing Al Chapman.

It’s certainly been an action-packed two decades, we can’t wait to see what the next bring.

    Best Emmerdale characters: Kim Tate

Ruthless, scheming and ever so sexy, Kim is a goddess and we worship at her altar.

The legendary lady of the manor was introduced in December 1989 as Frank Tate’s gold-digging missus. Frank might have had money, but it was excitement Kim craved. Her affair with farmhand Dave Glover gave her that, plus a ‘who’s the daddy’ storyline when Kim gave birth to son James. The tot turned out to be Frank’s, and tragedy struck when Dave was killed in a fire.

After Dave’s demise, Kim’s marriage to Frank collapsed. He tried to have her killed, but Kim took revenge by faking her own death and framing Frank for murder. Her ‘return’ from the dead caused Frank to suffer a fatal heart attack. In shocking scenes, Kim put her compact mirror up to Frank’s mouth to check he’d stopped breathing before reapplying her powder.

Kim’s second husband was Steve Marchant, but that marriage also ended badly. She set him up for a crime she’d committed and fled the village in a helicopter.

Fast forward to 2018 and Kim made a dramatic return. She was thrust straight back into the action after ordering her third hubby Graham Foster to dispose of her step-grandson Joe Tate. Kim also got pushed off a balcony by Faith Dingle.

Kim was reunited with her son, Jamie Tate, and let’s just say the apple didn’t fall far from the tree. Just like his mum, Jamie faked his own death.

Now Kim is onto husband number four, Will Taylor, and proved once again she’s not a woman to be messed with. When Will cheated with his ex Queen Kim got her revenge.

Eric Pollard smiles in Emmerdale publicity shot

    Eric Pollard

There’s only one Eric Pollard, and we love him!

The village veteran, who’s the longest-serving character in Emmerdale, has been played by actor Chris Chittell for 38 years.

Eric was first introduced in 1986 and was only meant to stay for 12 episodes. But viewers loved his immoral antics, even if the other villagers didn’t.

The former antique dealer’s list of crimes include theft, fraud and even bigamy. Eric has always had an eye for the ladies and has five wives – two of which he was married to at the same time. His second wife, Elizabeth was one of the victims of the 1993 plane crash.

Eric was tracked down by his long-lost son. David, in 2006 and the pair forged a close relationship.

The other most important person in Eric’s life was his fifth wife and soulmate, Val Lambert. Their union was a very popular one, and fans felt Eric’s heartbreak when he lost his ‘Valerie’ in 2015.

He’s also had a relationship with Brenda Walker, who’s played by Chris’s real-life wife, Lesley Dunlop.

Time has certainly mellowed Eric, and he’s been forced to slow down following after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s last year. But there’s still life in the old dog yet, so expect more scams in the future.

Chas in Emmerdale looks inquisitively at Marlon in the Woolpack

    Chas Dingle

Who remembers the moment Chas, short for Chastity, arrived in the village dressed as a nun for her cousin Marlon’s stag do? Talk about making an entrance!

A proper chip off the old Dingle block, Chas is the daughter of Faith and Shadrach and sister to Cain.

She’s also mum to Aaron. Chas gave birth to Aaron when she was 14, but the pair have a complicated relationship. Chas abandoned Aaron and was devastated to learn years later he’d been sexually abused by his father, Gordon. The guilt over abandoning her son has never really left her.

Chas has lived in Emmerdale since 2002 and has spent most of those years working at The Woolpack. She went from barmaid to landlady, before she was forced to sell her beloved pub. She’s now holds the position of manager.

Chas’s biggest weakness in life has always been men. She had a tempestuous relationship with Carl King. They almost got married, but Chas jilted Carl at the altar after discovering he’d been sleeping with Eve Jenson.

Then came her ill-fated affairs. First with Cameron Murray, who turned out to be a killer. Then Al Chapman, which resulted in Chas losing it all – including her husband, Paddy.

Fans loved Chas and Paddy together. The couple were dealt a cruel blow with the death of their first daughter Grace in 2018. But little Eve arrived the year after to help heal some of their pain.

Chas is a survivor, and has recently endured a battle against triple negative breast cancer. She underwent a double mastectomy and is currently in remission from the disease. Things are looking up on the love life front too, with a potential romance blossoming between her and Dr Liam Cavanagh.

    Classic Emmerdale Paddy perplexed

    Best Emmerdale characters: Paddy Kirk

Loveable Paddy is one of Emmerdale’s most cherished characters. He was introduced to viewers in 1997 as a locum vet.

Paddy is the son of Barbara and Bear Wolf, a former wrestler, who Paddy was estranged from until adulthood. He has a daughter, Eve, from his marriage to ex-wife Chas Dingle. He’s also been a father figure to Chas’s son, Aaron, over the years.

In 2024, Paddy married wife Mandy Dingle – for a second time, and his fifth in total. He and Mandy got hitched first time round in 1999, but split soon afterwards. Paddy’s also gone down the aisle with Emily Dingle, Rhona Goskirk, and of course, Chas. He’s also had a couple of extramarital affairs, with postmistress Viv Hope and teaching assistant Tess Harris. Don’t be fooled by the bumbling nature – Paddy can be a naughty boy when he wants to!

Paddy’s most enduring relationship is his bromance with best mate, Marlon Dingle. The pair’s silly antics have given viewers a lot of laughs over the years.

There have been incredibly sad times too. Paddy’s world was shattered by the loss of his daughter, Grace, who passed away moments after she was born. He also endured a battle with depression after his marriage split from Chas and contemplated ending his life.

Supported by his loved ones, Paddy found a way through, and his future is looking bright once more.

Charity Dingle is a classic Emmerdale icon (Credit: ITV)

    Charity Dingle

Landlady Charity has been at the centre of the action in Emmerdale since 2000, except when she took a break from the village between 2005-2009.

Feisty and fearless, Charity’s life story is one hell of a read!

As a young teen she spent time on the streets working as a prostitute. During that dark period Charity was groomed and abused by corrupt cop DI Bails, which resulted in her falling pregnant at 14.

Charity’s second child, Debbie, was the product of a fling with her cousin, Cain. Charity and Cain’s on/off love affair has been central to the soap and provided one of its most popular partnerships. They’re also famed for their illegal scams. Charity is a mistress of disguise and loves a wig!

Charity has had four husbands. Her first marriage to Chris Tate ended with him committing suicide and framing her for murder. Husband number two, Declan Macey tried to have her killed, and her third marriage to Jai Sharma also turned sour. Vanessa Woodfield almost became Charity’s fourth spouse, but she then fell for Mackenzie Boyd.

Charity and Mack have weathered a few storms – including him fathering a baby behind her back, and her stabbing him, but they remain together.

These days, Charity is landlady of The Woolpack, which she co-owns with son, Ryan Stocks. She’s also mum to Noah and Moses, as well as grandmother to Sarah and Jack Sugden.

    Aaron Dingle

Aaron is one of the most complex and compelling characters Emmerdale has ever had.

He’s the son of Chas Dingle and Gordon Livesey. Chas gave birth to Aaron when she was only 14 and placed him into care. He had a difficult upbringing and suffered abuse at the hands of his father.

Aaron came to live in the village permanently in 2008 and was a troublemaker from the word go.

Early on, Aaron realised he fancied boys. After coming out to his family, Aaron fell for builder Jackson Walsh. But tragedy struck when Jackson was paralysed in a horrific accident, and Aaron helped him die.

Aaron then began a secret affair with Robert Sugden. Fans went crazy for the pairing, who they dubbed ‘Robron’, but their lying and cheating led to the death of Katie Sugden.

By some miracle, Aaron and Robert got married. They split for good after Robert was jailed for murder.

Aaron moved on with Ben Tucker, but he was bumped off by serial killer Meena Julta. Shortly afterwards, Aaron left the village for a new life abroad.

He made a brief return the following year, but tragedy struck again he lost his half-sister Liv Flaherty in Emmerdale’s 50th anniversary storm.

Aaron’s now back in the Dales for good. His time now is mainly spent masterminding illegal activities with partner-in-crime/best mate Mackenzie Boyd. And there’s also a new man on scene in the form of former army medic, John Sugden, who just happens to be Robert’s brother.

Has Aaron met ‘the one’? Only time will tell…

Val in the courtroom in Classic Emmerdale
Val Pollard was a true one-off (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)

    Best Emmerdale characters: Val Pollard

Vivacious Val Pollard left us nearly ten years ago, but her memory lives on.

The gobby Geordie was Eric Pollard’s fifth wife, and Diane Sugden’s younger sister. She had to two children, Sharon and Paul. Val’s son Paul was the product of her affair with Diane’s husband, Rodney Blackstock.

Val, or Valerie as Eric often used to call her, was larger than life and had a penchant for causing trouble. Her and Eric were both as bad as each other, aka the perfect match.

The couple married in 2008 and purchased The Grange B&B, which they ran together. They took teen tearaway Amy Wyatt (now Barton) under their wing and ended up adopting her.

Val and Eric’s marriage hit the rocks after she cheated on him on holiday in Portugal and contracted HIV. The couple reconciled, but Val got in trouble with the police for committing fraud.

She planned to fake her own death, but didn’t get that far after becoming one of the victims in the 2015 helicopter crash. Val met a grisly end when she was impaled by a shard of glass. She rose from the dead a few days later and appeared as a ghost to say goodbye to Eric.

An unforgettable character, who’s truly missed.

We miss Andy Sugden (Credit: ITV)
We miss Andy Sugden (Credit: ITV)

    Andy Sugden

Andy wasn’t born into the Sugden brood, but was adopted by his best friend Robert’s parents Jack and Sarah in 2000.  Their act of kindness gave Andy hope of a stable future, but life turned out to be anything but.

First Andy accidentally killed Sarah after setting fire to a barn at the family farm, not realising she was inside. Then came the discovery that Robert had been sleeping with his wife, Katie. Andy decided to shoot Robert in revenge, but accidentally pulled the trigger on Jack, nearly killing him.

Andy fathered a daughter, Sarah, with next partner Debbie Dingle. They also went on to have a son, Jack, seven years later.

His second marriage to Jo Stiles saw Andy turn into a violent abuser. And when Jo found the courage to leave him, Andy suffered a complete mental breakdown.

Andy and Katie remarried, but she died weeks later after a confrontation with Robert. Andy then arranged for Ross Barton to shoot Robert (what’s his obsession with guns?) – but his brother survived.

20 years in the village came to a dramatic end for Andy after his vengeful ex Chrissie White framed him for a crime he didn’t commit. Andy went on the run and as far as we know is still running.

    Bring him back, please!

Moira Dingle aka Natalie J Robb in Emmerdale
Moira has made her mark on the village (Credit: ITV)

    Moira Dingle

Feisty farmer Moira is another one of Emmerdale’s power-houses and the woman who finally tamed Cain Dingle.

Moira and Cain are one of soaps’ most adored couples. Their love story started as a steamy affair but has gone the distance. They have survived betrayals on both sides, including Moira’s fling with Cain’s son, Nate. Well, they don’t call her Mucky Moira for nothing!

Moira arrived in the village with her first husband, and childhood sweetheart, John Barton, and their kids Adam, Holly and Hannah (now Matty). Her affair with Cain finished her marriage and Moira was heartbroken when John died in a car crash. Tragedy struck again in 2016 when Holly died of a heroin overdose.

Moira’s other memorable moments include her pushing her sister-in-law and nemesis Emma Barton to her death off a viaduct, and giving birth to baby Isaac without knowing she was pregnant.

The past few months have been particularly brutal for Moira after being diagnosed with a non-cancerous brain tumour. We’re keeping everything crossed she makes it through because we need Moira in our lives.

    <yoastmark class=

    Best Emmerdale characters: Zak Dingle

Zak was the patriarch of the most iconic family in Emmerdale – the Dingles – for almost 30 years.

A pig farmer by trade and former bare-knuckle boxer, Zak arrived in the village in October, 1994. Zak’s first wife was Nellie Lynch, and they had five kids. Their four sons were Nathan, Sam, Butch and Ben. Zak and Nellie also had a daughter, Tina.

Zak also fathered son Cain during an affair with his brother’s wife, Faith.

After Zak and Nellie divorced, Zak found love again with Lisa Clegg. They welcomed daughter, Belle into their lives on Christmas Day 1998 after Lisa (who didn’t know she was pregnant) gave birth in a pigsty.

Zak had a disastrous third marriage to Joanie Wright, which left fans in uproar over his betrayal of Lisa. But thankfully the Emmerdale writers saw the error of their ways and reunited Zak and Lisa. They remained together until her death in May 2019.

After losing his Lisa, Zak was a bit of a lost soul, although remained fiercely protective of his family.

Actor Steve Halliwell, who played Zak for three decades, passed away in December 2023. Zak was quickly written out and viewers were told he was visiting family in Scotland.

Zak’s family are soon to receive the sad news he’s passed away. The Dingles bring him home and lay Zak to rest in the village.

Seth and Betty smile and cheers happily
Seth and Betty were the beating heart of Emmerdale village (Credit: ITV)

    Betty Eagleton

Lovely Betty was the heart and soul of the village during her 21 years there.

She had a habit of being nosey and interfering, but Betty always meant well. She was a friend to many.

Betty came to the Dales in 1994 and discovered her former partner, Seth Armstrong was living there. The golden couple rekindled their romance and hosted a 1940s theme night for the villagers.

They remained together until Seth died on an airplane travelling back from Australia. Betty brought his body back to Emmerdale and had him buried in the woods surrounding Home Farm.

Betty remained in the village for several years after Seth’s passing and dealt with the loss of other dear friends, including Alan Turner. She went to live in Australia with new partner Reuben Archibald in 2015.

Sadly actress Paula Tilbrook died in December 2019, but Betty remains alive and well.

    Seth Armstrong

We can’t have Betty, without her lovely Seth. He was one of Emmerdale’s all time greats. Seth first appeared on screen in 1978. He was a temporary character to begin with, but was popular with the fans. By 1980, Seth was a full time regular.

After Seth’s wife, Meg, passed away, he went on to rekindle his relationship with former flame, Betty.

He also landed his dream job as a gamekeeper. When Seth wasn’t working at Home Farm he could usually be found supping a pint in the Woolie.

Seth was written out of the show in 2003 and his character was killed off two years later.

We like to think Seth is sitting on a cloud, beer in hand, watching the drama continue in his beloved village.

  • What happened in Emmerdale tonight: Billy’s boxing nightmare continued and so did Will and Kim’s marriage crisis

What happened in Emmerdale tonight: Billy’s boxing nightmare continued and so did Will and Kim’s marriage crisis

Emmerdale tonight dragged out some more stories including Billy fighting for money and Kim and Will’s marriage crisis. Just as they gave us a glimmer of hope that there was light at the end of the tunnel for some of the long-running plot lines, we hit more dead ends. Again.

Stay with us to find out everything that happened in Emmerdale tonight, Friday October 11.

Billy is lying to Dawn in Emmerdale
Dawn bought every word of Billy’s lies (Credit: ITV)

Billy lied to Dawn over and over again

Billy was still lying to Dawn and we’re still bored. Boxing promoter and billed new villain Jade soon pulled up in chauffeur driven car and Dawn just walked out right at that moment. Jade covered for Billy pretending she was just in the market for a new PT.

Billy was tempted by the money to fight again and as he discussed it with Mack the mechanic quickly worked out Billy was getting a kick out of the boxing and money wasn’t everything. But he insisted he was done with it all.

Back at home Billy and Dawn pledged their love to each other and stated family is all they need. But apparently not Billy, who still needs boxing.

He then found out the new car he’d bought was a cut and shut job and was only good for Vinny at the scrapyard. Billy whinged again about not being man enough to provide for his family and how things don’t just seem to be going his way. Dawn said much the same about them being unlucky and Billy was a sad man again. So he called Jade and accepted her offer.

This won’t end well. Billy knows it. We know it. Everyone knows it. But he’s doing it anyway. Awesome.

Kim has decided it's definitely over with Will (Credit: ITV)
Kim has decided it’s definitely over with Will (Credit: ITV)

Will offered an olive branch to Kim in Emmerdale tonight

Jimmy was still encouraging Will to try and save his marriage. Meanwhile, Kim was confiding in Lydia when Will arrived home with a chai latte with a sprinkle of cinnamon as a peace offering – that’s gonna do it, it’ll solve everything.

Well, it did force them to sit down and chat, at least. He confessed he never slept with Kerry and he wondered if there was a glimmer of hope for them. But Kim’s walls were up. Sigh. Although she did agree to think about trying again. Please let this be the ending in sight…

    Nope, apparently not!

Kim later texted Will to meet her and they soon started arguing. She said she was so tired of this bickering (she’s not the only one). Kim then told him to move out. She’d even packed his bags for him and drained their joint accounts. Now Will is also a sad man, just like Billy.

Tom wooed Amelia with the Woolie

Amelia seems to be the first person in the village who has noticed Tom is walking well, given he was axed in the back (have the writers been looking at social media and slotted that in, do we think?!).

And it also seems Amelia has started to see Tom’s not so lovely side when she asked if he was just trying to use her.

But alas, her rose-tinted spectacles were soon fixed and Tom proved himself by taking her to the Woolpack. She was taken in and told him she was ready to take things to the next level. But he turned her down. Are those alarm bells still not ringing, Amelia?

John stepped up in Emmerdale tonight

Laurel was still hassling Arthur about the condoms. She even suggested he pretend she was Ashley if that made it easier – why Laurel seems to think vicar Ashley would be better at this than her, given her, er, prolific sexual experience, we’re not sure.

John overheard and stepped in, asking Arthur to help fix his headlight. Arthur was a bit confused as to why John would want his help  given the lies he told, but John was using the excuse to gently (or as gently as John ever does) give Arthur some advice. In a brotherly way. Not in a sexual way. He made that much very clear, but does Arthur understand?

    Also in Emmerdale tonight…

    Gail got her wish

Gail was still worried about dead Noreen following her around the room at home. She is sure she’s going to be possessed by her ghost and feels her watching her all the time. So she was thrilled when Ryan said they were moving into the Woolpack to escape the spirit.

    Sam was sad

Becoming the third sad man in the village was Sam. After visiting Samson in prison, Sam was down in the dumps. Samson’s not coping apparently. Liam bought Sam a drink to cheer him up and offered him some advice, but Sam wanted to drink alone.

  • What happened in Emmerdale tonight: The truth about Will and Kerry’s night of passion was revealed – but not to Kim, who was in a bad, bad mood

What happened in Emmerdale tonight: The truth about Will and Kerry’s night of passion was revealed – but not to Kim, who was in a bad, bad mood

Emmerdale tonight saw the truth about Will and Kerry’s liaison revealed as Kim seethed and decided to turn bad, like, really bad.

Elsewhere, Billy got in a spot of bother and Amelia fought Tom’s corner. Here’s everything that happened in Emmerdale tonight, Wednesday October 9.

Will and Kerry were drunk as they told Kim they were going upstairs (Credit: ITV)
Will and Kerry were drunk as they told Kim they were going upstairs (Credit: ITV)

Kim was cross over Will and Kerry

Kerry crept down after spending the night with Will and Kim was not best pleased. Kerry made a speedy exit – probably wise.

Will then went boasting to Jimmy about his bedroom athletics with Kerry. Jimmy wasn’t actually impressed – so he has got some sense, then, just not when it comes to Tom!

Meanwhile, in the Hide, Kerry was rubbing it in to Kim’s face. So Kim decided to be bad again – she thinks no one respects her and she wants that respect back by being horrible to everyone around her again. Starting with Amy and her waitressing skills. Not really the right look, Kim, if we’re honest.

It later turned out that Will paid Kerry to pretend they slept together to wind Kim up. So that’s one up for Will, is it?

Come on Emmerdale, enough now. Enough.

Mack tends to injured Billy in Emmerdale
Mack tended to an injured Billy (Credit: ITV)

Billy was black and blue in Emmerdale tonight

Mack has sorted Billy a car, but Billy said he couldn’t view it. However he then lied to Dawn he was going to view the car. Mack was confused and Billy told him: ‘It’s complicated’. You can say that again (and we’re past caring if we’re honest).

Later on Dawn was waiting for Billy to go with her to collect Evan and he hadn’t come back. Gabby pulled up and offered to drive her instead. They then had a heart-to-heart and it looks like these two are becoming friends, which is exactly what Emmerdale needs, actually, women supporting women rather than being at each other’s throats.

Meanwhile, somewhere in the village, Billy was cowering in pain, bloody and bruised where Mack found him. He refused to go to the doctor or the hospital and admitted he’s been illegally boxing and he fell on something sharp when his opponent body slammed him. Although Mack insisted the hospital was the only option, they agreed on calling John to stitch him up instead.

John agreed to help, got Mack to take his belt off and gave it to Billy to bite down on before he stitched him up. Billy then limped home and gave Dawn a very lame excuse about where he’d been.

After John advised him to stop fighting or he might die and Dawn told him she needed to be able to count on him, a phone call threw everything up in the air for Billy when he was offered double pay for a fight next week. Will he risk everything and accept? And are we really interested in this storyline at all?

    Also in Emmerdale tonight…

Amelia and Lydia talk as both want the other to see sense (Credit: ITV)
Neither Amelia or Lydia were budging in their viewpoint (Credit: ITV)

Amelia was mean and then said sorry

Sam and Amelia had an awkward exchange in the village as Sam begged her not to cut them off from Esther. Amelia claimed she was keeping Esther safe from violent Belle. Could she be any more annoying?

Amelia later decided she had been wrong about keeping Esther away, so took the little girl to visit. She also gave them a photo for Samson as a peace offering. But then she laid it on thick with Lydia how thoughtful and kind Tom is and how Tom adores her. He’s apparently the perfect gentleman. But Lydia wasn’t buying it and explained her fears for Amelia and Esther.

As they reached a stalemate, it looks like Amelia isn’t going to budge on this one. More’s the pity.

Laurel grossed Arthur (and us!) out

Laurel apologised to Arthur and they agreed to start all over again. But then she bought him a box of condoms and he stormed off in another huff. Talk about embarrassing mum!

  • Kim Tate is better than this petty war with Will – here’s what needs to happen next

Kim Tate is better than this petty war with Will – here’s what needs to happen next

Kim Tate and Will Taylor have been at war ever since their marriage broke down in Emmerdale. From Will’s one-night stand with Rose to Kim’s blackmail plot, plenty has happened between the estranged couple.

Despite all the drama, Kim has admitted she still has feelings for Will and he’s also comforted her in the wake of Zak’s death. But, will Kim and Will reconcile? Or have things gone too far?

Here’s what could happen next for Kim and Will, including the Emmerdale Insider team’s thoughts…

Kim and Will are better together
Kim and Will are at war! (Credit: ITV)

    Kim and Will’s split

They were once happily married, but over recent months Kim and Will’s marriage has completely broken down.

The couple’s troubles began while Rose was living at Home Farm with them as she was secretly plotting to take down Kim with the help of Ruby. Eventually, Rose kissed Will and the pair had a one-night stand.

Kim soon found out, but didn’t tell Will that she knew. She proceeded to put an elaborate revenge plan into action, which saw her demand thousands from Will and even make fake porn videos of him and Rose.

Things then took a sinister turn when Kim staged her own kidnapping. When Will arrived to ‘rescue’ her, she knocked him into a coffin and he finally confessed to sleeping with Rose.

Will and Kim are now back living at Home Farm together but aren’t together. Kim has been taunting Will by bringing men back to the house and heading on dates, despite admitting to Lydia she’s having second thoughts about ending their marriage. And, Will slept with Kerry following a few too many drinks at the Woolpack.

    Confused? We all are!

A reconciliation for Kim and Will?

Could we see Will and Kim put all their differences aside and reconcile? Some Emmerdale fans think a reunion between the pair is likely, especially after Kim admitting she still has feelings for her estranged husband.

“Kim and Will are going to end up back together aren’t they,” one fan wrote on social media, while another added: “To be honest this childish tit for tat stuff between Kim and Will makes it so obvious they’ll get back together.”

“Aww Kim and Will just get it together,” a third Emmerdale fan pleaded.

    Over for good

There’s been plenty happening between Will and Kim, so it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if the pair decided to end their marriage for good. Many Emmerdale fans are hoping Kim decides to dump Will once and for all as she ‘can do better’.

“Don’t take him back Kim,” one person said on social media, while another commented: “Will… I hope Kim kicks you out permanently!”

Somebody else said: “Oh Kim please put your brain in gear and get rid of him!!” and a fourth fan added: “Kim don’t even get back with Will, you deserve better than him. He should just move out!!”

    Kim to kill Will?

It wouldn’t be out of character for Kim to decide to kill Will off. After all, she’s one of the village’s best villains.

Could see Will meet a grizzly end? Some Emmerdale fans are hoping so, as they plead for evil Kim to make the ultimate comeback.

One person pleaded: “Kim, will you polish Will off? Do us a favour and include Jimmy who is long since past his use by date.” Another said: “Will is a sad, petty little [bleep]. Kill him off.”

“Doesn’t Kim have some chums that could just get rid of Will already?,” a third Emmerdale fan asked.

The Emmerdale Insider team on what should happen with Will and Kim

We’ve certainly got our opinions here at Emmerdale Insider on what should happen next in Kim and Will’s marriage. It’s a point of much discussion most days, so here’s what we think…

    Carena Crawford, Editor

“I want Kim and Will to get back together, stop all this nonsense and rule the Dales together. Kim is at her best when she’s being bad and he’s got a past too – just look at what happened when they teamed up to take down Dawn’s evil ex Alex. They could become the ultimate power couple.”

    Kaggie Hyland, Editor-in-Chief

“I’m with Carena. Will and Kim forever! It’d be an interesting arc for them to go a bit Band Of Merry Men and only do over villains from now on, I think.”

    Tamzin Meyer, Assistant Soap Editor

“Kim needs to ditch Will for good and end this childish need for revenge immediately. I saw more potential with Peter the Finance Guy than with Will. Kim can do so much better!”

    Danni King, Freelance Writer

“Kim can do much better than Will! Too much has happened for them to reconcile I think, but this is Emmerdale, so who knows?!”

    Kerry Barrett, Freelance Writer

“They’re much better together than apart – they sort of give each other a purpose. And since the days of Dave Glover, Kim’s always been better with a bit of rough than a posh bloke!”

What happened in Emmerdale tonight: More insults between Kim and Will before he got jiggy with Kerry, plus Tom resorted to blackmail

Emmerdale tonight saw more back and forth between Will and Kim who really need to stop with the insults. Meanwhile, Laurel was also throwing nasty comments about, directed at Nicola, and Tom was trying to charm terrified Carl.

Here’s all that happened in Emmerdale tonight, Tuesday October 8.

Lydia and Kim had a talk about Kim's feelings for Will (Credit: ITV)
Lydia and Kim had a talk about Kim’s feelings for Will (Credit: ITV)

Kim and Will want each other back – but didn’t show it

The Kim/Will divorce saga rumbled on (almost as long as the blackmail plot did). Will woke up hungover and not impressed to see Peter in his dressing gown having stayed over the night with Kim. More spatting and sparring and insults ensued.

Peter was later wearing Will’s shirt and again Will and Kim threw abuse back and forth. And then Will punched Peter. But Will insisted he wasn’t jealous. Kim told him to leave her house (again) and he refused (again).

Kim later confided in Lydia that messing with Will doesn’t feel as good as she hoped. Lydia spelt out the obvious: they both still care about each other. She advised Kim to stop being stubborn, but would Kim listen?

Meanwhile, Will was necking hair of the dog at the Woolpack, where Kerry found him drowning his sorrows. She offered to be his listening ear and he recounted everything including the cheating and the blackmail and what happened with the grave. Kerry responded by telling him it was the most impressive thing she’d ever heard in her life. But Will confessed he still loved Kim.

With Kim at home dolling herself up and dumping Peter, it looked like there was finally going to be end to this, but alas, Will showed up with Kerry, drunk as skunks. They then headed to the bedroom and it all went to pot again. Sigh.

Laurel insulted Nicola in Emmerdale tonight

Arthur went to see Nicola and confided in her about his troubles. In fact, he confessed, he isn’t experienced at all, he’s never been with anyone and is feeling jealous of all the other 17 year olds going on Love Island. Nicola advised him to talk to Laurel about how he was feeling.

Arthur and Nicola then went to chat to Laurel together, but obviously Laurel wasn’t best pleased to hear Nicola’s advice over how to deal with her son.

She threw a nasty insult about how Nicola was a bad parent because Angelica is locked up. The friends then proceeded to trade more insults, and it felt like we were at Home Farm with Kim and Will all over again.

They did make up, and Laurel softened towards her son, but can she help him?

    Also in Emmerdale tonight…

    Billy was brooding

Evan’s coming home for three weeks, but Billy was nervous. Things got worse when he found out the car had failed its MOT and would cost more than it was worth to fix it.

Billy took his anger out on a punchbag, but suspicious Mack arrived to question him over what he was up to. Billy covered, but it’s clear Mack wasn’t convinced, will he get to the bottom of what’s going on?

    Tom blackmailed Carl

Carl was clearly terrified of Tom and no one noticed or wanted to listen to what he had to say. Instead Nicola sent him off to pair socks.

Carl later admitted to Tom he had scared him and Tom apologised. He even bought Carl a massive toy car as a present and blackmailed him into keeping quiet about the tablet. So this is going to be dragged out even longer, then. Hopefully Carl will get bored of the car quickly and reveal all.

Will and Kim back on in Emmerdale spoilers?

    A tender moment

Why the soap couldn’t just let Will and Kim be happy we don’t know. But they didn’t and here we are. The pair are all set to divorce and it’s pretty much outright war as they each try to win.

It comes after Kim found out Will slept with Rose and lied about it. She then set about blackmailing him and made him believe she’d been kidnapped and buried underground. They immediately drew the battle lines and the fight commenced.

Except Kim’s having regrets because the revenge is not making her feel as good as she’d hoped. In fact, she misses Will and Lydia even reckons she’s still in love with him.

Things take a surprising turn next week when Kim experiences a tender moment with Will at Home Farm. She is totally wrongfooted by the interaction and doesn’t know what to do about it.

    Will offers comfort

When news reaches them that Zak Dingle has died, Will is the one Kim turns to. He comforts his estranged wife over the loss of her old friend and it’s clear the pair are growing close again.

Meanwhile, Will’s gradual rapprochement with Dawn continues as he gives her cash and promises to negotiate her a loan. Could they be back to playing happy families before too long?

    Caleb continues to scheme

Despite having spent time with Kim, Will is still determined to take her down alongside Caleb. So his Mr Nice Guy act is just an act after all. For goodness sakes Emmerdale, give us one happy couple!

When Will finds out Kim has asked Gabby to move back into Home Farm, he piles the pressure on Caleb to get their plan into action.

However, Caleb is under increasing pressure from the bank. He’s taken a huge risk by lying to the bank, but will his lies catch up with him? And might Will have a change of heart after all?

  • The 12 best Emmerdale episodes – EVER! Crashes, deaths, weddings and bravery!

The 12 best Emmerdale episodes – EVER! Crashes, deaths, weddings and bravery!

Emmerdale has had more than its fair share of brilliant episodes. So many in fact, that it’s hard to pick a favourite. So instead we picked 12 of the best! Here are what we think are the best episodes of Emmerdale, ever.

Emmerdale plane crash - Frank watches from his car
The plane crash transformed Emmerdale as a soap (Credit: ITV)

    The plane crash 1993

Emmerdale’s plane crash may have happened more than 30 years ago, but it’s still legendary among soap fans. The Beckindale Air Disaster marked the beginning of a new era for Emmerdale in many ways - the renaming of the village from Beckindale to Emmerdale, the end of several storylines and the start of many more!

Four characters were killed – Mark Hughes, Elizabeth Pollard (Eric’s wife), Archie Brooks and Leonard Kempinski – while Chris Tate was badly injured and left unable to walk.

The storyline was quite controversial at the time because it came just five years after the real-life Lockerbie disaster. But it was a hit with viewers and it transformed Emmerdale from a quiet countryside soap into the must-see television it is today.

Kim is back from the dead and confronts a shocked Frank, offering to clear his name or to restart the accusations against him. Frank grabs her and is about to throttle her, but he suddenly collapses to the floor, clutching his left arm. Kim smirks down at him as Frank pleads for help
Kim came back from the dead and shocked Frank into a heart attack! (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)

Kim leaves Frank to die 1997

Kim Tate‘s marriage to Frank was dead and buried by 1997. She had cheated on him with Dave Glover, and thought for a while that baby James was Dave’s, only to discover that Frank was his dad.

When Dave was killed in a fire, rescuing little James, Kim well and truly went off the rails! She hired a lookalike to drive her car round the village, so everyone thought she was still there, then ran off to the Caribbean. But tragedy struck when the lookalike crashed the car into the lake and died. Frank identified the body as Kim and was arrested for murder!

When Kim returned, the shock of seeing his ‘dead’ wife caused Frank to have a heart attack. Kim coldly watched him die, without going for help. And as he breathed his last she checked for signs of life with the mirror from her handbag – then reapplied her make-up and left him on the floor.

Sarah Sugden dies in the barn fire 2000

The Sugdens were were struggling with money, and Sarah Sugden had been having a steamy secret affair with farmhand Richie.

Adopted son Andy was determined to help them out of their financial hole and he came up with the idea of burning down a barn so dad Jack could claim on the insurance.

But he didn’t know that Sarah and Richie were inside when he lit the match. Richie made it out, but Sarah died in the flames.

Best Emmerdale episodes: Tricia’s death 2003/4

Another dramatic death! Tricia Dingle was super popular with the Emmerdale residents and viewers alike. But on New Year’s Eve 2003, she was outside when a huge storm hit the village.

Lightning struck the Woolpack and the chimney collapsed, burying poor Tricia. Husband Marlon found her and called for help but though Tricia made it to hospital, she later died of her injuries. SOB!

The 40th anniversary live episode 2012

One of the best live episodes of a soap, ever! The live episode to celebrate Emmerdale’s 40th anniversary featured the weddings of Chas Dingle to Dan Spencer, and Katie Sugden to Declan Macey, and the births of Molly Sharma, and Jack Sugden Jr. AND a murder!

When Carl King tried to rape newly wed Chas she whacked him with a brick and believed she’d killed him. But actually Carl was finished off by future Dales serial killer Cameron Murray.

    Cameron in the Woolpack siege

    The Woolpack siege 2013

Cameron’s killing spree that began with the live episode in 2012 came to an end a year later with a dramatic siege at the Woolpack. In one of the most tense episodes of soap ever, he held drinkers at gun point, shot Alicia Metcalfe and then pursued Chas and Debbie through the flooded pub cellar. Cameron was electrocuted and his murderous rampage in the Dales came to an end.

James Barton falls from the road bridge
Emma pushed James from the road bridge and started a tragic chain of events (Credit: ITV)

    The Hotten by-pass crash 2016

FIVE storylines came together in the thrilling crash that took place in October 2016. Emma Barton had been holding estranged husband James hostage in a Misery-style revenge plot.

When he escaped, she tracked him down to the road bridge – wearing her wedding dress, of course! – and shoved him off.

James plummeted on to the by-pass and on to a car driven by dementia-sufferer Ashley Thomas. Ashley’s car flipped and caused Pierce Harris to collide with a lorry, which then caused Robert Sugden and Aaron Dingle‘s car to leave the road and plunge into a lake. Oh, and they just happened to have kidnapped Lachlan White and put him in the boot.

Just seconds later, Rhona and Paddy drove straight into the carnage and flipped their van as they tried to avoid it. It was one of the most impressive stunts in Emmerdale history!

Moira tries to wake up daughter Holly who has died overnight
Holly’s death was quietly devastating (Credit: ITV)

Best Emmerdale episodes: Holly Barton’s death 2016

Sometimes the best episodes are the huge stunts and sometimes it’s the quiet, devastating episodes that hit hardest. Holly Barton’s death from a drug overdose definitely fits the latter category.

Holly lay dead in bed, while mum Moira pottered around at home. And when she finally went to check on her daughter and found her dead, the shock was real. It’s almost a decade since Holly died, but her tragic demise still affects her family.

Charity faces Bails in court 2018

Charity Dingle has been through a lot in her time in Emmerdale but perhaps the most heart-wrenching was when she finally faced her past. Charity revealed that she’d been sexually exploited by crooked cop DI Bails, and had a baby boy.

With the help of her new-found son, Ryan, she bravely faced her abuser in court in a very emotional episode.

Best Emmerdale episodes: Grace dies 2018

Chas and Paddy Dingle knew their baby Grace was going to die almost as soon as she was born, but that didn’t make the loss any easier. In a devastatingly sad episode, the new parents cuddled their little girl – who lived for just 29 minutes – as they imagined the future she might have had.

Meena looks down at a dead Leanna
Meena was cold and remorseless as she killed Leanna (Credit: ITV)

    Meena murders Leanna 2021

There’s very little we enjoy more than an Emmerdale serial killer and Meena Jutla was one of the best! Her utter lack of remorse as she stalked her prey made her super scary.

When birthday girl Leanna Cavanagh twigged that Meena wasn’t the caring nurse she pretended to be, Meena pursued her through the graveyard. The chase ended up on the bridge, where Meena pushed Leanna. When the fall didn’t kill the teenager, Meena climbed down and finished her off. It was brutal but gripping stuff.

Marlon lies on the floor having suffered a stroke

Best Emmerdale episodes: Marlon’s stroke 2022

When Marlon proposed to a delighted Rhona, he rushed home to find the ring – only to suffer a stroke. Marlon’s experience as he lay helpless on the floor, waiting for help to come, was praised for raising stroke awareness. And his long recovery won actor Mark Charnock praise, too.

  • Emmerdale’s saddest animal deaths including Batley the dog and Minty the lamb

Emmerdale’s saddest animal deaths including Batley the dog and Minty the lamb

Emmerdale fans were left reeling back in August after it looked like Belle Dingle’s beloved dog Piper had been killed at the hands of her abusive husband Tom. Fortunately Piper is still alive and Tom had just tricked Belle into thinking she was dead.

In Emmerdale on Wednesday October 2, Moira was responsible for the death of all her son Isaac’s sheep.

Sadly, these aren’t the first animals to meet a sorry end in Emmerdale, though. We’ve rounded up the most heartbreaking (and shocking!) animal deaths over the years.

Aaron [Danny Miller] discovers Clyde injured,
Aaron was devastated when Clyde died (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock )

    Clyde – Aaron’s dog

Aaron Dingle – who was then known as Aaron Livesy – adopted Clyde in 2009 when he found him starving. Aaron did his best to train Clyde, who was volatile and even attacked Edna Birch’s dog, Tootsie. But eventually Clyde got in a fight with a bigger dog and lost a lot of blood. Paddy put Clyde down with heartbroken Aaron by his side.

    Daisy – Marlon’s dog

Marlon’s Dalmation Daisy originally belonged to his wife, Tricia. When Tricia died Marlon looked after the pooch though there was a hairy moment in 2012 when she was knocked over by Ashley Thomas.

That was nothing, though, compared to the shocking scenes in 2015 when alcoholic Laurel knocked over Daisy when she was drunk. Daisy died by the road, and Laurel tried to bury her to hide her involvement in the crime, only to be rumbled by Cain Dingle.

    Batley the dog in Emmerdale

    Batley – Edna Birch’s dog

Grumpy Edna could never hide her irritation at her fellow Emmerdale residents, and her disapproval of the antics in the village was clear! But Edna had a soft side and she adored her little dog, Batley.

Batley was a real character – much like Piper – and the fans were shocked when he was kicked by Edna’s horrible granddaughter Eve Jenson. Just a few weeks later, everyone was devastated when Batley fell ill and was put down.

The fans were so upset by the whole thing that Batley’s sad demise even scooped him Best Exit at the British Soap Awards in 2002!

    Tip – Jai’s dog

Jai loved little rescue pooch Tip. But Tip met a sorry end when he was killed – accidentally – by Andrea Tate. Just like Laurel before her, Andrea tried to cover up the crime but was found out.

    Bundle – Caroline Bates’s dog

In 1984, trigger-happy Jackie Merrick shot and killed Bundle in front of a group of horrified schoolchildren! Bundle had been bothering Jackie’s sheep but the Bates family were so upset they sued Jackie!

Dark Star – Kim Tate’s horse

Horse-lover Kim adored her beautiful horse Dark Star, but he was killed in 1993 when the plane crashed on Emmerdale  village – which was then called Beckindale.

    Smokey – Seth Armstrong’s dog

Seth’s beloved pet Smokey also met his fate on the night of the plane crash when burning rubble destroyed the Pollards’ house. Elizabeth Pollard had been looking after Smokey that evening, but had stormed out after a row with husband Eric. Poor Elizabeth was also killed that night.

Paddy Kirk [[DOMINIC BRUNT] prepares to euthanize Hamish
Hamish was put to sleep by Paddy (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)

Hamish – Belle Dingle’s Shetland pony

Belle thought the world of her little pony Hamish. He had to be put down when he got ill, with Belle sobbing by his side. Piper is buried next to Hamish, close to the Dingles’ cottage Wishing Well.

    Steve – Lydia’s cockatoo

Lydia’s cockatoo was fond of biting people and was known to be grumpy, but Lydia loved him. She was terribly upset in 2017 when he escaped through an open window and flew into some power lines, which killed him instantly. In fact, Lydia was so upset that she had Steve stuffed!

We’re not sure where he is now, which is probably for the best.

Cain tickles Minty's chin as Isaac holds the lamb

    Minty the lamb

Young Isaac Dingle was horrified when he did a farm visit with his mum and discovered the runt of the lambs would be killed. He managed to persuade dad Cain to let him have Minty as a pet. Isaac grew very attached to him and the whole village joined in to search for Minty when he went missing.

Sadly, Minty didn’t make it, as Moira had warned, he just wasn’t strong enough to survive. Isaac was sure his mum had killed his pet, but she insisted she hadn’t. Though given Moira’s behaviour now, we’re not so sure!
