Rhona Goskirk in Emmerdale: Vet, former addict and domestic violence survivor

Tonight’s episode of Emmerdale (Monday, March 10) saw Rhona Goskirk face the ghosts of her own past as Dylan became talk of the town amid speculation ran rife about his drug addiction. Rhona is no stranger to addiction herself – battling her own painkiller addiction in 2010.

The episode also saw mention to Rhona’s more recent strife, as Marlon brought up her custody battle with Gus over baby Ivy. All ancient history, but these disparate threads from Rhona’s life are never far from the surface.

But what happened with Rhona’s own addiction to painkillers? And how did her war with Gus come to an end?

Who is Rhona Goskirk in Emmerdale?

She’s a proud mum, wife and best friend of fellow vet Vanessa Woodfield. Rhona is the daughter of Mary Goskirk and the late Barry Goskirk.
She works as a Veterinary surgeon at Emmerdale Veterinary Surgery.

Rhona is married to Marlon Dingle and is the ex-wife of Gus Malcolms, Paddy Kirk and Pierce Harris.

She has two children – her son Leo Goskirk, and baby daughter Ivy Malcolms. Rhona is also stepmum to Marlon’s daughter, April Windsor.

The character has overcome huge battles in her life, including an addiction to painkillers and nursing her husband Marlon back to health after he suffered a stroke.

Rhona is a survivor of domestic abuse, which she suffered at the hands of her ex-husband, Pierce.

Her world was further rocked in late 2023 when she discovered her former husband Gus Malcolms and his wife Lucy had used her frozen embryos without consent to conceive a child.

When did Rhona Goskirk join Emmerdale?

Rhona was introduced by Emmerdale series producer Steve Frost and made her debut on September 17 2001. She was initially brought in as a recurring character for the first couple of years before being reintroduced full-time in March 2010.

Rhona first appeared as a locum vet, who was covering for Zoe Tate when she was on holiday. She began a romance with local chef Marlon Dingle, but the relationship fizzled out and Rhona left the village.

Returning in June 2002 to cover for Zoe again, Rhona rekindled things with Marlon. It wasn’t a case of second time lucky though, and Rhona left again only six months later.

    The arrival of Leo

Rhona returned to the village in 2010. It turned out during her eight year absence, Rhona married a man called Gus Malcolms, but their union had ended in divorce.

She began a relationship with fellow vet Paddy Kirk, but found out she was expecting on/off boyfriend Marlon Dingle’s baby. During her pregnancy, Rhona’s unborn baby was diagnosed with Down’s Syndrome. In May 2011 Rhona gave birth to a baby boy, who she named Leo.

Four years later Rhona became broody for another baby. She and Paddy looked into adoption, but things fell apart when Rhona discovered Paddy had been playing away with Leo’s teacher, Tess Harris.

Unable to get over his betrayal, the couple called it quits.

Rhona’s abusive marriage to Pierce Harris

Tragedy struck when Tess was run over by Kirin Kotecha and subsequently died. Tess’s widower, Pierce Harris came to the village searching for answers about his wife’s death and discovered the truth about Tess’s affair with Paddy.

Pierce then turned his attentions to Rhona and the scorned duo embarked on an affair. He quickly moved in with Rhona, but his controlling nature soon became evident when he set about reorganising everything to his exacting tastes.

Pierce was also consumed with jealous paranoia over Rhona’s history with Paddy, which made memories from his own traumatic past resurface.

After Rhona agreed to become Pierce’s wife in February 2017 his possessive behaviour ramped up another gear and he coerced his fiancée into making a sex tape.

The couple married on April 24 2017, but what should have been a happy day ended in unimaginable horror when Pierce violently raped his new bride.

Rhona went to the police and they arrested Pierce. He stood trial in the July of that year and Rhona bravely attended court to give evidence against him. The jury found Pierce guilty and he was sentenced to five years in prison.

Sadly though, this wasn’t the end of Rhona’s nightmare…

    The return of Pierce

In December 2019, Rhona discovered that Pierce was up for parole. The following month he made a dramatic return to the village and murdered Rhona’s then-boyfriend Graham Foster, who she was planning to move to France with.

Pierce framed Marlon Dingle for murder and started stalking Rhona from afar. Events came to a climax when Rhona came to Vanessa’s rescue after Pierce held her and young son Johnny hostage. Rhona live-streamed the situation to everyone in the Woolpack and Pierce was arrested.

He was sentenced to life imprisonment for his crimes and Rhona was finally free of him. He died of cancer in 2022.

Rhona Goskirk battled painkiller addiction in Emmerdale

In 2010, Rhona was prescribed medication to help with a back injury. This led to a crippling painkiller addiction which put her career – and life – at risk.

As a result of the dangerous habit, Rhona’s personality drastically changed. She risked her career by stealing pills from the surgery’s medicine cabinet in an attempt to get her fix.

Loyal pal Vanessa tried to help by getting Rhona to ration the supplies – but the situation only got messier when Vanessa confessed she’d fallen for Rhona.

After getting caught up with a dodgy dealer called Gary, Rhona’s wake-up call came as she collapsed and was rushed to hospital. The doctors informed Rhona her kidneys were on the verge of collapse.

Helping Ross with his painkiller addiction

The frightening news and threat of losing Leo prompted Rhona to go to rehab and get clean. Years later, she was able to support Ross Barton, who had become addicted to painkillers himself, and was spiralling out of control.

Recognising the signs, she encouraged Ross to get help and clean up.

    Rhona’s other love interests

Rhona is married to chef Marlon, but her love life has certainly had its ups and downs.

After the trauma of her split with Paddy and ordeal at the hands of Peirce, Rhona fell for farmhand Peter Barton.

The couple got engaged in 2019, but the relationship faltered after Rhona was injured in a farming accident. She had to undergo a hysterectomy and was and told she’d never be able to have more children.

Rhona and Pete finally finished after she shared a kiss with Nate Robinson.

    Marriage to Marlon

Rhona and Marlon reunited for the fourth time in 2021. They at first just enjoyed spending family time together, but that grew into something more and they decided to give things another go.

Both planned to propose to the other, but various mishaps meant it didn’t happen. Rhona eventually planned a surprise party for Marlon’s birthday and decided to pop the question there. Marlon got down on his knee at the same time and the couple got engaged.

However tragedy struck when Marlon went home to get the ring and had a stroke. He was found by daughter April and rushed to hospital.

It’s been a long road to recovery, but Marlon and Rhona have persevered. They finally married in August 2022 with Marlon surprising his bride by walking down the aisle.

    Is Ivy really Rhona’s daughter?

Ivy was conceived using one of Rhona’s embryos that had been frozen when she was with Gus. He used them with his new wife Lucy without Rhona’s permission.

However, even though biologically Ivy is a part of Rhona, she doesn’t have any legal rights.

Baby Ivy arrived in the world safely, but sadly Lucy died due to complications from child birth. Acting on her maternal instincts, Rhona became attached to little Ivy and was desperate to be part of her daughter’s life.

When Gus announced his intention to move to France with Ivy, Rhona panicked and snatched Ivy – but found herself under arrest for kidnap and was forced to stand trial.

She was found not guilty and Gus was then made to stand trial for fraud. He was sentenced to eight years in prison, meaning Ivy went to live with Rhona and Marlon.

Marlon was close to divorcing Rhona after she turned on Gus in court during her victim impact statement and made sure he went down for a long time. Marlon felt it was too far and she was being selfish. He also got upset that she didn’t consult him and revealed it has been a pattern of their relationship.

They eventually agreed to work hard to save their marriage.

Rhona Goskirk’s past dragged up as April went missing in Emmerdale

On Christmas Day 2024, Rhona and Marlon’s worlds turned upside down when daughter April went missing. Rhona’s own past came back to haunt her when an article from the Hotten Corier implied she’d been to blame for April’s disappearance.

April since resurfaced, returning home to Marlon and Rhona earlier this year. However, she wasn’t alone – and her friend from the streets, Dylan, came looking for her a few weeks later. Dylan’s friendship with April has alarm bells ringing for Marlon and Rhona – particularly the latter, who realises how dangerous addiction can be.

  • Rhona the ‘hypocrite’ strikes again as she forgets Ivy saga and condemns Marlon for failing to put family first

Rhona the ‘hypocrite’ strikes again as she forgets Ivy saga and condemns Marlon for failing to put family first

Fans of Emmerdale have branded Rhona Goskirk a ‘hypocrite’ following her behaviour last night – as she slammed Marlon for prioritising missing April over Leo, Ivy and the rest of his family.

In last night’s episode (Monday, February 3), Marlon hit an all-new low in his search for April. Having spent the night out looking for his daughter, he was beaten up and robbed while on the streets of Leeds.

Returning home, he remained laser-focused on April, earning the frustration of Rhona, who felt like she’d been left out in the cold, along with kids Leo and Ivy. This came to a head as Marlon lashed out at her and everyone around him.

He was talked around by Paddy and eventually made amends with Rhona… but some feel like Rhona might be forgetting something.

    Emmerdale fans slam ‘hypocrite’ Rhona

As last night’s episode aired, viewers took to X to remind Rhona of her own past. Namely, her obsessive battle for baby Ivy, and the kidnapping saga which followed.

“Marlon’s doing for April the same as Rhona did for IVF [Ivy], ignoring everyone else,” wrote one fan.

“I mean Rhona has got a nerve after how obsessed and stupid she behaved over Ivy. Of course Marlon is going to be obsessed with trying to find April,” another said.

“Funny how Rhona didn’t take the same advice when she was so focused on Ivy,” wrote a third.

“Rhona u hid everything from Marlon about IVF ya hypocrite,” said a fourth.

    Rhona’s battle for baby Ivy

Ivy learned that she had a daughter with ex-husband Gus in 2023. After initially trying for IVF together, he secretly used her embryos to have a child with his second wife after he’d split from Rhona. Learning that Gus and Lucy had used her embryos without her consent, Rhona was fuming.

During their confrontation, Lucy went into premature labour and died. Rhona continued visiting baby Ivy in the hospital, forming a bond with the infant.

In the months which followed, a bitter battle ensued between Gus and Rhona. While he initially allowed her to visit the child, his refusal to allow her legal rights over the child led Rhona to spiral – kidnapping Ivy and attempting to flee the country.

Cooler heads eventually prevailed, and she returned home – just as Gus was imprisoned for fraud. Ivy now resides with Rhona and her family – when the writers remember she exits, that is.

What happened in Emmerdale tonight: Marlon despaired as Rhona’s past came back to haunt her

In Emmerdale tonight, Marlon Dingle despaired as the local newspapers dredged up ghosts from Rhona’s past amid the disappearance of April. As her painkiller addiction and baby kidnapping hit the headlines, Marlon’s fears that April might be dead only grew.

Elsewhere, as a guilty Dawn tried to avoid Joe, he attempted to build bridges with Noah – only for an angry Ross to try and warn him off. Meanwhile, Cain and the boys gave Moira some much-needed support, and Anthony had his algebra lesson with Angelica.

Here’s everything that happened in Emmerdale tonight, January 13.

    Marlon despaired in Emmerdale tonight

As the episode began, Marlon had a vivid dream of April’s death, picturing himself running through the woods, where police had found her body. He woke up in a state, having slept on the sofa to guard for any more intruders.

As Mary rallied the troops, Marlon was frustrated that everyone else seemed to be getting back to normal. Vanessa had some more bad news for the family – popping around, she showed the family a Hotten Courier article dredging up Rhona’s past, her painkiller addiction and the whole kidnapping baby Ivy thing.

At The Woolpack, Marlon wallowed in the worst of the comments. Mary’s fears that April might be dead left him even more upset and angry, and he lashed out – publicly screaming at Mary and the others for having given up.

Out back, he confided in Rhona about his nightmare – and his fears that Mary might be right. Instead, a visit from case worker Anna had good news – CCTV footage had spitted April on the streets of Leeds, very much alive and well.

    Good news for once!

    Ross menaces Joe on Emmerdale

Joe’s sick, and Ross passed on a message

Marlon wasn’t the only one who had a bad night’s sleep – Joe Tate awoke, immediately downing a handful of pills to manage his mystery illness.

He paid visit to Noah, hoping to make amends for badmouthing the Dingles. Trying to get into his half-brother’s good books, he offered to put in a good word with a mate to score them both some VIP tickets to a Leeds match.

Just then, a bickering Charity and Ross walked in. Charity was less than happy to see Joe hanging around, and quickly gave him his marching orders. Ross, meanwhile, was even less pleased to see the man he held responsible for his acid attack.

With Joe gone, Charity tried to bar Noah from seeing his half-sibling – but this only succeeded in helping Noah over to Joe’s side. Charity bonded with Ross over her distaste for Joe – telling him she’d put in a good word with Moses if he passed on a ‘message.’

Sneaking onto Home Farm, Ross confronted Joe with the ‘receipts’ – warning him that he’d be a dead man if he went near Noah again. Will Joe get the message?

Dawn felt guilty as Joe swaggered about

At Home Farm, Dawn tried to hide her guilty conscience from Billy. Not easy when the man she locked lips with is living under the same roof. As she kissed her husband goodbye, Joe accused her of ‘overcompensating’ and feeling jealous about his other exploits.

Moira spent the day with her family

Moira was in a rush to complete the household work before radiotherapy tomorrow. A nervous Moira faced questioning from the kids while Cain dished out the chores to an annoyed Matty.

Looking to do something nice with the boys, Moira promised to take them out to the climbing wall. As the family left, Cain spotted Kyle thieving cash from the family funds jar. What is the lad up to?

Later, in the cafe, Cain stood by Moira, pledging to stick by her throughout her procedure. Later, he also covered for Kyle when she discovered the money missing from the jar.

At least the money had been put to a good cause – and, as Kyle arrived home, he handed over a gift to Moira from him and Isaac; a special moisturizer for radiotherapy patients.

“Knowing that I’ve got you three by my side, I think I can cope with anything,” a loved-up Moira swooned. Cue the guilty looks from Cain.

Anthony got his feet under Nicola’s table on Emmerdale tonight

As news about Rhona’s past began to spread, Nicola was quick to point out to Anthony that the article’s claims were all true. “What happened in the past should stay there,” she said, charitably. Anthony would no doubt agree.

Following his lesson with Angelica, he was full of praise, describing her as a model student. Thrilled by her daughter’s progress, Nicola told him he’d have to come around for some of her, uh, lamb and date tagine. Pardon us – for once, Anthony isn’t the only thing turning our stomach.

In Emmerdale spoilers, Rhona is accused of being responsible for the disappearance of April after journalists dredge up her past. This includes her kidnapping baby Ivy last year, for which she was arrested and stood trial.

With April still missing, Marlon and Rhona are already at their wit’s end.

What fresh pain will the dredging up of Rhona’s painful past bring for her and Marlon?

Rhona is haunted by her past

After waking from a horrific dream in which April has died, Marlon is tremendously shaken. However, he manages to mask his upset in front of Rhona.

Later, Vanessa shows Marlon an article on the Hotten Courier website. Rhona is horrified when she learns that her kidnapping baby Ivy is dredged up again, inferring that she might be responsible for April’s disappearance.

Admitting the prospect that April might be dead after all, Marlon is a broken man. Breaking down, he and Rhona weep together.

Marlon takes to the streets in search of April

Rhona receives a message from their police liaison. In Leeds, a desperate Marlon searches the streets attempting to engage passers-by.

Meanwhile, Rhona worries about who might have betrayed her to the press.

Back in Leeds, Ross spots a young girl who looks like April. He rushes off to intercept her – and is shocked when he runs into Ross instead.

Ross defuses Marlon’s initial anger as he tries to keep up his hopes of finding April. However, the pair are surrounded by reminders that April is just one of many missing people in the country…

3 Emmerdale spoilers for tonight: Rhona hits breaking point

In Emmerdale spoilers for tonight Rhona hits her breaking point, and negativity continues to surface.

Elsewhere in the village, boundaries are once again crossed. But by who?

All of this and more in Emmerdale spoilers for tonight (January 10).

    1. Negativity rises

There are a lot of storylines at the minute which could involve negativity.

In last night’s episode (January 9), Marlon began receiving horrible messages online from trolls, after his appeal video for April.

His daughter was last seen on our screens on Christmas Day getting into the car of an unknown person – so where is she?

In the Emmerdale spoilers for tonight it tells us that more negativity surfaces. So while we don’t know who that’s for, Marlon’s video is our theory.

    2. Rhona hits breaking point

During the search for April, Marlon and Rhona have struggled to stay by each others side without arguing.

Things got even worse when Marlon didn’t tell his wife that Laurel relapsed and made a move on him. So when Mary confronted her, Marlon blamed Rhona.

The pair have been at odds with each other quite a lot, in a time they should be sticking together.

And in tonight’s episode, it seems Rhona can’t take anymore and is at her breaking point. Will the couple find a way to get back on track?

    3. Boundaries are crossed in Emmerdale spoilers

This one is a bit vague, as again there are a lot of Emmerdale storylines this could involve. But after their sneaky kiss yesterday, could it be Dawn and Joe?

The last few days have been very dramatic at Home Farm. From Kim’s arrest during Will’s funeral, to Dawn drugging Kim with ketamine. But last night the shocks went even further when Joe and Dawn kissed – despite only hating each other up until now.

So as the Emmerdale spoilers for tonight explain that boundaries will be crossed – is it them?

  • 11 Emmerdale characters who battled addictions – battles with booze, gambling habits, and a deadly drug overdose

11 Emmerdale characters who battled addictions – battles with booze, gambling habits, and a deadly drug overdose

Emmerdale has never shied away when it comes to tackling the tough subject of addictions. Over the years, we’ve watched characters battle against the most dangerous of demons. From drink to drugs, gambling to self-harm.

Currently, Laurel has fallen off the wagon after she suffered a relapse at Christmas. Her dependency on drink led to the break up of her marriage to Marlon and even saw Laurel turn to prostitution. This time she turned to Marlon for help and then tried to kiss him, leaving a huge issue in his marriage to Rhona.

But which other Emmerdale characters struggled to break the habit and whose fight against their addictions cost them their life?

Annie Sugden was one of the Emmerdale characters who overcame their addictions

Annie was the strong and steady matriarch of the Sugden family. She ran Emmerdale Farm and practically raised three children single-handedly. But her life was also blighted by a series of terrible tragedies.

In the space of 13 years, Annie lost her daughter Peggy to a brain hemorrhage, her twin grandchildren were killed by a train and her daughter-in-law died in a car crash. Then in 1988, Annie was almost killed herself after getting caught in a fire at Crossgill Farm.

Traumatised by her brush with death, Annie was prescribed with tranquilisers, and ended up dependent on them. As her addiction took hold, Annie’s loved ones intervened and were able to help wean her off.

    Laurel Thomas

Laurel addiction to drink brought destruction and death to her family, and almost claimed her life.

She turned to booze in late 2014 after her relationship with then-husband Marlon Dingle ran into trouble. Within weeks, Laurel was drinking day and night and struggling to keep it from her family.

But her reliance on liquor put little April in danger after she accidentally drank a glass of orange juice which Laurel had laced with vodka. Worse was to come when Laurel choked on her own vomit in front of April and young son Arthur while she was supposed to be looking after them. She was found in the nick of time by Emmerdale’s Marlon, and thankfully it wasn’t the case where addictions win the battle.

The carnage continued as Laurel ran over and killed Marlon’s pet dog Daisy while under the influence and tried to dispose of the animal’s body. But her rock bottom came when she slept with a stranger for cash to fund her next drink.

Sickened by the depths she’d sunk to, Laurel finally sought professional help to get sober. Unfortunately her marriage to Marlon did not survive.

    Frank Tate

Home Farm owner Frank had a tendency to hit the bottle when life wasn’t going his way.

His marriage to second wife Kim was famously volatile and rocked by his drinking and her infidelities. Frank struggled with alcohol issues on and off for years, and was prone to outbursts of violence towards his spouse.

After discovering Kim had cheated with gamekeeper Neil Kincaid, Frank drank himself into oblivion, then attacked his love rival. A dark period in Frank’s life followed as he fell back into addiction, but he and Kim eventually reconciled. Although we all know how that story ended.

Rhona steals from the vets in Emmerdale

Emmerdale’s Rhona Goskirk battled her addictions but she ended up in hospital

Rhona’s life took a dangerous turn in 2013 when she became reliant on painkillers. After initially taking them to help her bad back, the local vet found herself unable to get through the day without self-medicating,

As her dependence worsened, Rhona risked her livelihood by stealing pills from the surgery’s drug cabinet. She was caught by best mate Vanessa, who agreed to keep her secret because she was in love with her. In turn, Rhona made out she felt the same so Vanessa could enable her habit.

Events came to a head after Rhona’s then-husband Paddy found out she was mixed up with a drug dealer called Gary. She admitted she had a problem and told Vanessa she’d been using her.

In despair, Rhona took an overdose. She was rushed to hospital and told her kidneys were on the verge of collapse. The bleak diagnosis and threat of losing young son Leo was the wake-up call Rhona needed. She checked into rehab and got clean. Thankfully, for Rhona, it was an Emmerdale storyline where someone overcame their addictions.

Ross Barton collapses to the ground in Emmerdale

    Ross Barton

In 2018 Ross fell victim to an acid attack which left him with life-changing injuries. He was put on medication to help deal with the pain from his burns, but began popping the prescribed pills like Smarties. The Emmerdale storyline ventured down a different path to other characters to faced their addictions.

When Dr Liam refused to renew his prescription, Ross began to spiral. But Rhona – a former addict herself – recognised the signs and was able to support her friend in getting clean.

Months later, Ross relapsed after being offered cocaine as payment for a car theft. He succumbed to temptation and started taking the Class A on a daily basis.  But the endless nights of hard partying and drug abuse took their toll. Ross put his and young son Moses’s lives at risk after he collapsed during a game of football.

Haunted by his reckless actions, Ross decided to clean up his act and left Emmerdale for a fresh start with girlfriend Rebecca White.

    Aaron Dingle

Aaron is one of Emmerdale’s most self-destructive characters. He’s had a troubled life and a history of drug abuse, self-harm and suicide attempts.

These desperate cries for help have largely been driven by the trauma Aaron has suffered in his life – struggling with his sexuality, his toxic on/off love affair with Robert Sugden and the abuse he experienced at the hands of his father, Gordon.

Aaron’s currently in a place of contentment with new boyfriend John Sugden, but there’s always a sense he could be tipped over the edge at any moment.

Holly Barton on the ITV soap
Tragic Holly lost her life to heroin (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)

Holly Barton’s death was a tough watch compared to other Emmerdale storylines based on addictions

Holly’s premature death from a heroin overdose in 2016 sent shockwaves across the world of soap.

The character’s lengthy battle with substance abuse began when she was a teenager. She started using cocaine recreationally, but soon moved on to ecstasy, ketamine, then heroin. Holly was eventually confronted by parents Moira and John. She ran away from home for a while, but they brought her back and helped her wean off drugs slowly.

Months later, John was killed in a car accident and Holly relapsed, but she vowed to change and left the Dales for a new life in London.

She returned in 2016 and it soon became clear she’d succumbed to her old demons. After causing more misery for her family, Holly pledged to get clean again and found support from fellow addict Jai Sharma.

Then, in what appeared to be the middle of just an ordinary mid-week episode, came the shattering discovery that Holly had relapsed – and this time it was fatal. Moira discovered her tragic girl dead in her bed and an empty heroin wrap on the floor. It’s gone down as one of Emmerdale’s most dramatic exits as well as hardest endings for soap characters and their addictions.

    Moira Dingle

Addiction clearly runs in the Barton family, but Moira’s was with drink rather than drugs.

Alcohol first became Moira’s friend after her affair with Cain’s secret son Nate became public knowledge. Ostracised by her family and friends, she hit the bottle.

Moira’s dependence on drink almost destroyed her marriage to Cain. She put her young son Isaac at risk by passing out on the sofa and ignoring his cries for help. Then there was the time she passed out drunk behind the wheel and narrowly avoided a collision with another car.

The farmer managed to get herself sober, but fell off the wagon briefly in 2022 after Cain took the blame for murdering Al Chapman. She suffered another brief relapse in 2024 in the weeks before she was diagnosed with a brain tumour.

Moira is currently tee-total and we hope it stays that way.

    Pearl Ladderbanks

2015 was Pearl’s annus horribilis. The Emmerdale golden oldie got herself into debt after underpaying her gas bill and knew her receptionist wage at the vets wasn’t enough to pay it back.

Desperate times called for desperate measures and Pearl turned to gambling to fix her financial woes. She loved the thrill of her new habit, but unfortunately it only made matters worse.

After a few big losses, Pearl began stealing from the vet’s and foolishly faked having Alzheimer’s to excuse the missing money. Pearl was found out when Vanessa Woodfield discovered a list of IOUs she’d been keeping. She got the sack and was forced to sell her house to Eric Pollard to pay off her debts.

Emmerdale’s Paul Ashdale put the spotlight on gambling addictions

Vinny’s wayward father Paul had a long history of gambling addiction. It led him to walk out on his son when he was young, leaving his ex-girlfriend Mandy to raise Vinny single handedly.

Paul returned to the pair’s life in April 2020 and claimed he’d given up the gambling for good. He even managed to worm his way back into Mandy’s affections, and they made plans to marry.

However, Paul was not the changed man he claimed to be. He was still gambling – making secret trips to the casino and frittering away thousands. Unable to tell Mandy the truth, Paul used Vinny as his emotional and physical punch bag.

Eventually Vinny found the courage to tell girlfriend Liv Flaherty what was happening. On the day of Paul’s wedding to Mandy, Liv confronted him at the barn where he was getting hitched. Paul attacked her, but moments later Jimmy King’s lorry ploughed into the barn. Liv managed to escape, but Paul perished when the place went up in flames. Sadly, he became another Emmerdale character who faced a tragic fate after their addictions took hold.

    Liv Flaherty

The guilt over leaving Paul to die is what drove Liv back to drink. She had previously battled hard to overcome an alcohol addiction, but the relapse almost cost Liv her life.

As her drinking binges got more extreme, the teen ended up in hospital after passing out at the cemetery and nearly choking on her own vomit. Following the scary episode, Liv promised big brother Aaron she was committed to getting sober.

However, her manipulative cow of a mum, Sandra had other ideas and deliberately derailed Liv’s recovery by spiking her drink.

In the end, Liv did manage to overcome her drinking demons, but met a tragic end in the Emmerdale 50th anniversary episode, which was a tough pill to swallow after defeating her addictions.
