Emmerdale missing family members: from Dingles to Miligans, where have these characters gone – and could any make a comeback?

Emmerdale is all about family, and every clan has members who are missing from our screens. But where are these characters currently? And what are the chances of them making a comeback to the soap?

From the Dingles to Tates, Sugdens to Sharmas, here are all the faces we haven’t seen in a while. And there’s even one in there we’re yet to meet…

Emmerdale missing family members: The Dingles

    Tina Dingle

Tina’s return to Emmerdale caused a real stir. The long lost Dingle hadn’t been seen for 28 years before she rocked up at her father Zak’s funeral, with a brand new face.

In the weeks that followed, Tina caused a lot of carnage. She tried to lay claim to Zak’s will, then dropped the bombshell that she was Vinny’s real mum and tried to blackmail Mandy over the secret. In the end, Vinny issued Tina an ultimatum – either stay in his life, or take £50k, return Zak’s will and leave Emmerdale.

Tina showed her true colours by choosing money over family and with that she was gone. But is that it? Surely we’re going to see more from Tina in 2025, otherwise what was the point?

    Samson Dingle

Sam’s troublemaking son proved himself to a real chip off the block. And following the tradition of many of his family members, he’s currently serving time in prison.

Samson’s downfall came when he formed a friendship with local thug Josh Cope. The pair’s lies put Matty Barton in jail for a crime he didn’t commit and pushed the poor bloke to the brink. After months of living under his control, Samson found the courage to fight back against Josh.

After attacking his former friend, Samson was arrested and sentenced to four years inside. That was last summer, which means there’s a chance Samson will be out next year if he keeps his nose clean.

    Nathan Dingle

Only ever mentioned by name once, Nathan Dingle remains something of a mystery. He’s the eldest of Zak’s seven children and the only one we’ve never seen on screen. So what actually happened to him?

The story – as told by Tina Dingle back in 1995 – is that Nathan disowned the Dingles after thinking he was too good for them. Tina claimed her brother was stuck up and ashamed of his roots. She also revealed the family had no contact with him since a fight broke at Nathan’s wedding.

Interestingly the character has never been brought up in conversation again, but that’s not stopped fans speculating how and when Nathan could return to Emmerdale. There’s definitely potential for a story with the long-lost Dingle, and we’d love to know what he’s been up to all these years.

    Debbie Dingle in Emmerdale

    Debbie Dingle

Debbie and her son Jack, who’s now 12, haven’t been seen since they moved up to Scotland in early 2021. They were living with Zak until his death last year, and Debbie was the one who broke the news to the family.

It was thought she might come home for her grandfather’s funeral, but Cain revealed Debbie had decided to stay put. Fans are still hoping that a comeback is on the cards.

There’s definitely a place for Debbie in Emmerdale, particularly with the recent return of her ex-lovers Ross Barton and Joe Tate. These two hate each other’s guts, but we’d love to watch them fight over Debbie. So bring her back and let the games begin.

Emmerdale missing family members: The Fox-Miligans

    Nicky Miligan in Emmerdale

    Nicky Miligan

Emmerdale is all about the Miligans right now, and it’s a shame Nicky is missing from the action.

Caleb and Ruby’s son turned his back on the village – and them -  last year after growing tired of their toxic games. Nicky is now living abroad with his fella Suni Sharma and has limited contact with his folks. Steph is still on speaking terms with her brother, which gives us hope of seeing Nicky again.

The next few months looks set to be huge for the Miligans, with the ongoing mystery of who killed Anthony. And we’re now wondering if we’ve been hasty in overlooking Nicky as a suspect in his grandfather’s murder? That would be one heck of a twist, but we’re here for it.

Who are the missing members of the Tates in Emmerdale?

Zoe Tate and baby Jean Tate in Emmerdale

    Zoe Tate

Village vet Zoe was a central player in Emmerdale back in the 90s. The only daughter of Frank Tate, she made history as the first lesbian character in a British soap.

Zoe’s life was always full of drama. She had a memorable affair with her brother Chris’s wife, Charity, was diagnosed with schizophrenia, and fell pregnant during a mental episode.

Her departure in 2005, which saw Zoe blow up Home Farm, has gone down as one of Emmerdale’s best ever exits. For the past 20 years Zoe has been living in New Zealand with her daughter Jean.

Sadly, actress Leah Bracknell died in 2019 from cancer, so unless they recast, we doubt we’ll ever see her again. But surely she’s due an off-screen death and tribute, which could then lead to the return of…

    Jean Tate

Jean is the daughter of Zoe Tate and local womaniser Scott Windsor. She was conceived while Zoe was experiencing a schizophrenic episode and she had no memory of her one-night stand with Scott.

Aged only two and half when she emigrated to New Zealand with her mum, Jean would be 22 now. We’d love to see how she’s turned out and if she’s inherited any Tate traits.

    Jamie Tate in Emmerdale

    Jamie Tate

Kim’s manipulative son Jamie was proof that the apple never falls far from the tree.

He spent most of his early years in boarding school after Kim was sent to prison. He also trained as a vet, married Andrea and became a father to daughter Millie.

But everything went wrong when he decided to join his mum in the Dales. Jamie wrecked his marriage by getting Gabby Thomas pregnant, he also tried to bump Kim off by poisoning her.

Kim wised up to Jamie’s game, so he faked his own death. He was later revealed to be alive and well, living with Millie and her gran Hazel.

Will he come back to cause even more carnage?

    Millie Tate

Little Millie would be 10-years-old now, but Kim seems to have forgotten the granddaughter that was once the apple of her eye.

After the death of her mum Andrea, Millie moved away with her grandma Hazel and Jamie. She was last seen in 2022 when Millie and Hazel turned up to Thomas Tate’s christening.

Emmerdale missing family members: The Bartons

    Adam Barton

Can you believe it’s been seven years since Adam went on the run after taking the blame for Emma Barton’s murder? He fled the country on the day of his sentencing, abandoning his past for a life as a fugitive. And it was all done to protect his mum Moira – Emma’s real killer.

Fans were teased with the possibility of Adam’s return when Moira paid her son a visit last year. But he obviously feels it’s not yet safe to set foot back in the village.

Actor Adam Thomas has often expressed a desire to revisit the character, so could 2025 be the year he comes home?

    Pete Barton in Emmerdale
Pete has chosen to remain living in Liverpool for now (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)

    Pete Barton

After Ross’s explosive comeback, fans predicted Pete wouldn’t be far behind his brother. But so far he’s kept away.

Pete, who was played by Anthony Quinlan, is best remembered for the love triangle involving him, Ross and Debbie Dingle. He beat Ross to near death after discovering he’d been sleeping with his wife, and ended up in prison.

The brothers eventually realised blood was thicker than water and made up. Ross relocated to Liverpool with girlfriend Rebecca White in 2018, and Pete joined him in 2020.

We assume he’s still there as there’s because Ross hasn’t said otherwise. So will Pete be paying him a visit? Only time will tell.

Emmerdale missing family members: The Sugdens

    Robert Sugden

There’s not a year that goes by without rumours of Robert returning to Emmerdale. The slippery Sugden was one of Emmerdale’s most popular characters and his relationship with Aaron Dingle captured the hearts of millions.

The pair’s love story came to an end in 2019 when Rob was sentenced to 14 years in prison for the manslaughter of his sister Victoria’s rapist Lee Posner.

It has since transpired Lee’s brother, Luke, may have been to blame for his sibling’s fatal injuries. Now that sounds like a get-out-of-jail card that needs to be played.

Robert’s return would certainly put the cat amongst the pigeons in terms of Aaron’s romance with John. But who doesn’t enjoy a spicy love triangle?

    Andy Sugden on Emmerdale
Emmerdale fans would love to see Andy make a comeback (Credit: ITV)

    Andy Sugden

There’s been an Andy Sugden shaped-hole in Emmerdale since 2016.

The iconic character was played by Kelvin Fletcher on the soap for an epic two decades. Since quitting the role that made him a household name, Kelvin went on to scoop the glitterball in the 2019 series of Strictly Come Dancing.

He’s currently starring in ITV reality series Fletchers’ Family Farm alongside wife Liz Marsland and their four children.

Andy time in the village came to a dramatic end after he was framed by Chrissie White for the shooting of her father, Lawrence. Forced to go on the run, Andy fled with the help of Robert and ex-girlfriend Bernice Blackstock.

Still a fugitive, Andy’s whereabouts remain unknown. But he hasn’t been killed off, which keeps the hope of a comeback alive.

    Diane Sugden

Diane was the beloved landlady of The Woolpack for 17 years and the life-blood of the village. She was a true survivor – overcoming cancer, a near-fatal stabbing and being fleeced by her conman lover.

Actress Elizabeth Estensen, announced her retirement from acting in 2021. Diane swapped the Dales for a new life in sunny Portugal, and it’s unlikely we’ll see her again our screens. Which is more the pity.

Emmerdale missing family members: The Kings

Sadie King stands in front of Home Farm
Scheming Sadie was a joy to watch (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)

    Sadie King

Superbitch Sadie was an absolute queen and one of Emmerdale’s greatest bad girls. Played by Patsy Kensit, Sadie wrecked havoc for two unforgettable years.

The money-hungry minx was married to eldest King brother Jimmy, but only for his money. She had affairs with Cain Dingle, Robert Sugden and even Jimmy’s own brother Matthew.

Sadie tried various ways to get her greedy mitts on the King family fortune, but ultimately failed. She made her great escape in 2006, and sent flowers for Tom Senior’s funeral in 2007. No one has heard a peep from her since, but we long for a Sadie comeback.

    Anya King

Carl King had two kids. Now we know all about his wicked son Tom, but what about daughter Anya?

While never a regular character, Anya has appeared in 67 episodes over the years. She moved to Saudi Arabia with her mum Colleen in 2010, then returned for Carl’s disaster of a wedding to Chas that Christmas.

She was last seen on screen in 2012 after Carl’s murder. When Tom returned to the village in 2023 he revealed he and Anya were no longer close.

Anya would now be 26 and has no family left after Colleen died of a heart attack in 2023. Perhaps she could pop back and give her old Uncle Jimmy a visit.

    Scarlett Nicholls in Emmerdale

    Scarlett Nicholls

One of the lesser known members of the King clan, Scarlett was the illegitimate daughter of Tom Senior and nurse Carrie Nicholls. Her existence was only discovered in the aftermath of Tom’s murder. As per her father’s will, Scarlett inherited 25 percent of Home Farm.

She lived with big brother Jimmy after Carrie emigrated to Canada. Scarlett had romances with Aaron Dingle and Adam Barton, both of which ended badly.

Scarlett left to join her mum abroad in July 2011, and made a brief return in October 2012. She’s not been spoken about since.

Emmerdale missing family members: The Sharmas

Nikhil Sharma and Jai Sharma in Emmerdale

    Nikhil Sharma

Socially awkward Nikhil was Jai’s right hand man, and together they ran the sweet factory.

He was also popular with the ladies. After a brief engagement to Maisie Wylde, Nikhil went on to marry Gennie Walker, and they had a daughter, Molly. After Gennie was murdered by serial killer Cameron Murray in 2013, heartbroken Nikhil decided he couldn’t stay in the village. He and Molly moved away to Canada.

He came back for a brief stint in November 2015 when actor Rik Makarem reprised his role. Nikhil proposed to Leyla Harding, but broke the engagement off after realising she didn’t love him. He then flew back to Canada with Molly.

The last mention of Nikhil was in 2017 when he contracted meningitis and Rishi, Bob and Brenda travelled to Canada to help look after him.

Priya Sharma in Emmerdale looking worried
Poor Priya had a tough time in the village (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)

    Priya Kotecha

Priya is the youngest of the Sharma siblings and spent 14 years in the village. Over that time she battled anorexia, almost died in a fire, had affairs with Cain Dingle and Pete Barton and a short-lived marriage to Rakesh Kotecha.

After accepting an exciting new job in London, Priya and daughter Amba left the Dales in January 2023.

That was two years back and there’s been no word from Priya since. We hope she’s having better luck in her new life.

  • Emmerdale relationships that turned toxic: Robron’s bad romance and Charity Dingle’s dangerous marriage

Emmerdale relationships that turned toxic: Robron’s bad romance and Charity Dingle’s dangerous marriage

Relationships in Emmerdale rarely run smoothly, and often they can turn toxic. We’re not referring to the usual ups and downs every couple experiences, but rather romances that have gone bad. Really bad.

Take the affair between Dawn Taylor and Joe Tate. It’s all thrill of the chase right now, but both characters have a dark and destructive side and we can see it all turning very toxic.

Here are 8 other pairings that were both passionate and poisonous…

Robert Sugden and Aaron Dingle in Emmerdale
Robron’s romance always had a toxic edge (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)

    Emmerdale toxic relationships: Robron

They may have been adored by millions, but Aaron and Robert’s relationship was toxic from the start.

Robert was engaged to Home Farm heiress Chrissie White when his affair with Aaron began, and he wasn’t prepared to give that all up. He pushed Katie Sugden to her death when she threatened to expose his infidelity, and forced Aaron to help him cover up the crime. Paddy was next to rumble Robron, so Robert tried to bury the vet alive in a grain machine. He then held Aaron hostage, and threatened him with a gun.

The abuse and manipulation carried on even after the couple got together. Aaron always refused to seek help for his demons and was prone to violent outbursts. While Robert ended up in bed with Rebecca White and got her pregnant.

Despite their obvious love for one another, neither Robert or Aaron seemed capable of having a proper grown up relationship.

    Kim Tate and Frank Tate

The Tates’ stormy marriage was littered with lies and deceit, on both sides. Kim had worked as Frank’s secretary before she found her way into his bed. Theirs was a marriage of convenience – Kim was young and sexy, and Frank was filthy rich. But it wasn’t long before the cracks started to show.

Bored of her older husband, Kim had affairs with Neil Kincaid and Dave Glover. She fell hard for Dave, and tried to induce Frank into having a heart attack in the hope of getting rid of him. Kim then found out she was pregnant, but didn’t know who the daddy was.

When Frank got wind of the betrayal he played dirty by offering Kim a million pounds to dump Dave and name him as the father. Baby James was born and Kim was left heartbroken when Dave died in a fire at Home Farm.

Wanting to hurt Frank, Kim vanished and paid a lookalike to drive her car around. When that woman was found dead in mysterious circumstances, Frank was arrested for murder. Kim then rose from the dead for one final – fatal – showdown with Frank.

The shock of seeing her again caused Frank to suffer a heart attack and Kim took delight in standing over and watching him die.

Carl King grabs Chas Dingle's arm in Emmerdale

Emmerdale toxic relationships: Chas Dingle and Carl King

Chas has bedded some rouges in her time, but no man quite got under her skin like Carl King. These two fell hard and fast for one another, but their families didn’t approve.

Tom King Senior bribed Chas to end things with his son, and when Carl found out he murdered his father. Chas realised her boyfriend was a killer, but that didn’t seem to bother her much. What she did object to was the fact Carl couldn’t keep it in his pants.

After finding out her boyfriend was sleeping with barmaid Eve Jenson, Chas took her revenge. She faked a pregnancy then jilted him at the altar.  Carl was humiliated, but he couldn’t let Chas go. After discovering she was having an affair with Cameron Murray he developed he blackmailed her into coming back to him.

Their love affair came to a grisly end when Carl attempted to rape Chas and she attacked him with a brick. Chas spent months thinking she’d murdered Carl, but Cameron was the real killer. Maybe he did Chas a favour by getting that monster out of her life.

Moira Dingle in bed with Nate Robinson in Emmerdale

    Moira Dingle and Nate Robinson

Moira and Cain’s marriage has been scarred by numerous infidelities, and let’s not forget their love story actually started as an affair. But the fling that did most damage was the toxic one between her and Nate Robinson.

The pair started sleeping together in 2019, and Moira couldn’t keep her hands off the handsome farmhand. But what she – and no one else – knew was that Nate was actually Cain’s long-lost son. He believed his father had abandoned him as a baby and seducing Moira was part of his revenge plan.

The truth was revealed during a dramatic showdown on a boat, which ended up exploding. Everyone made it off alive, but Moira and Nate were finished after she realised what he’d done.

Ashamed that she’d been taken in by Nate, Moira turned to drink to numb her pain.

Belle Dingle and Jermaine Bailey talk in Emmerdale

Emmerdale toxic relationships: Belle Dingle and Jermaine Bailey

Belle was only 17 when she fell head over heels for married GP Jermaine. They embarked on a risky affair, but when Cain and co got wind of it they were baying for blood. Instead of owning up, Jermaine made out Belle was his stalker. Yikes!

The pair resumed their fling, but Belle soon grew sick of being the other woman. She told Jermaine’s missus Angie everything and he was fired from the job at the surgery.

Jermaine decided he was done with the Dales, but Belle wasn’t done with him. In a desperate bid to make him stay she faked a pregnancy. Belle, who was in the grips of schizophrenia at the time, went to great lengths to keep up the charade. She even doctored an ultrasound scan.

Belle carried on pretending she was with child until Angie realised what was happening and outed her secret. Jermaine left the village and Belle ended up suffering a nervous breakdown.

Harriet Finch and DI Malone in Emmerdale
Malone got what was coming to him (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)

    Harriet Finch and DI Malone

Harriet first became involved with DI Mark Malone when she was working as an undercover cop, going by the name ‘Michelle’.

Their past was revealed when Malone came to the village in 2020 to investigate the shooting of Nate Robinson. Harriet, now a village vicar, knew what kind a dangerous man Malone was, but that didn’t stop her going back for more.

After breaking off her relationship with Will Taylor, Harriet ended up sleeping with the bent copper in the church. The affair didn’t last long as Malone began to terrorise Dawn Taylor. Harriet caught Malone trying to force Dawn to take a fatal overdose and she attacked him with an ornament.

Dawn finished the villain off with three bullets, and Harriet helped bury his body in the cemetery.

Charity Dingle and Cain Dingle go in for a kiss in Emmerdale
Charity and Cain have always had a thing for one another (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)

Emmerdale toxic relationships: Cain Dingle and Charity Dingle

Emmerdale’s answer to Bonnie and Clyde have a long and dysfunctional past. Charity and Cain first started sleeping together as underage teens, which resulted in her falling pregnant with Debbie.

Since then there have been countless make ups and break ups. Cain and Charity’s chemistry is pure dynamite, but every time they get together it seems to do them more harm than good. The closest they got to making it was in 2009 when Cain popped the question. Charity accepted, but when he sprang a surprise wedding on her she decided she wasn’t ready for such a commitment.

They finally called it quits after Cain slept with Faye Lamb and Charity left him for Jai Sharma. Those flames of passion have never really been extinguished though. They had a brief affair in 2016 when Cain was married to Moira, but all that succeeded in doing was causing grief.

These days Charity and Cain are definitely more friends than lovers, but there’s always a sense the cousins could start up again. In fact, a lot of Emmerdale fans think they’re true soulmates.

Declan Macey attacks Charity Dingle in Emmerdale
Declan and Charity’s marriage turned ugly very quickly (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)

    Charity Dingle and Declan Macey

Charity’s marriage to Home Farm owner Declan Macey was one big ugly mess. They got together when Charity was on the rebound from Jai Sharma, and she was seduced by Declan’s smooth charm and bulging bank balance.

They became husband and wife and Charity reveled in her new role as lady of the manor. She fell pregnant but decided to have an abortion behind Declan’s back. Charity then made out she’d suffered a miscarriage during a scrap with Declan’s sister Megan.

When Declan discovered his wife’s betrayal he decided Charity had to die. He attempted to shoot her with a flare gun, but his nephew Robbie was caught in the crossfire. Charity fought back and thought Declan had drowned, but he survived.

In a final act of revenge, Declan returned to the village and drugged Charity. He then told the police how they’d framed innocent Rachel Breckle for starting a fire at Home Farm. Charity was sentenced to two years in prison.

Emmerdale greatest couples ranked: 1. Robron

Taking the top spot are Emmerdale’s most ever shipped couple – Robert and Aaron. Can you believe it’s been over 10 years since their first kiss? At the time, viewers knew Aaron was gay, but Robert was engaged to Home Farm heiress, Chrissie White.

What started out as a forbidden affair turned into one of soap’s most electric partnerships. Robron mania took over and their supporters couldn’t get enough, immortalising their favourites in artwork and fan fiction.

Their love story may have been addictive, but it was never straightforward.  Even after they became an official couple, Aaron’s past demons and Robert’s roving eye threatened to destroy what they had. When Aaron went to prison, Robert slept with Rebecca White and got her pregnant.

In 2018, after one previous failed attempted, Robron tied the knot. Their romantic wedding was watched by millions, but less than a year later Robert was jailed for the murder of rapist Lee Posner. He refused to let Aaron waste the next 14 years of his life and filed for divorce.

Aaron has kept it in the family and is currently bedding Robert’s half-brother, John. But we all know which Sugden is his true soulmate.

    2. Eric Pollard and Val Pollard

Eric’s has had a lot of ladies in his life, but there’s only one he’s ever truly loved and that was his Valerie. The fifth Mrs Pollard was feisty, ruthless and manipulative. In other words, Eric’s perfect match.

Partners in the bedroom as well as in business, the couple ran The Grange B&B together for years. They became foster parents to teenage runaway Amy Wyatt, and Val also took young Finn Barton under her wing.

The Pollards’ marriage had its fair share of ups and downs. While taking some apart from one another, Val slept with a man on holiday and contracted HIV. The heartbreaking discovery caused Eric to disown his wife, although he eventually forgave what she’d done.

In 2015, the pair made plans to flee the village after Val was faced with a prison sentence for committing fraud. They conspired to fake Val’s death then Eric was going to join her for a new life overseas. But sadly they never got that far when Val became one of the victims of the summer fete helicopter crash.

Eric still regularly visits Val’s grave to reminisce over the good old days.

Emmerdale greatest couples ranked: 3. Cain Dingle and Moira Dingle

If you want sizzling chemistry than look no further than Cain and Moira. 11 years married and they still fancy the pants off one another. Coira started out as a steamy affair, but have gone on to become one of the soap’s most enduring and iconic couples.

The past decade has thrown up all kinds of challenges for Cain and Moira. They’ve endured the death of Moira’s daughter Holly, her alcohol addiction, his prison stint and numerous affairs – on both sides.

Cain has been Moira’s rock in recent weeks as she’s undergone radiotherapy treatment. But it could be one betrayal too much when she finds out he had sex with Ruby while she was in surgery having her brain tumour removed.

Could 2025 be the end of their epic love story?

Lisa Dingle and Zak Dingle have a drink in the Woolpack

    4. Zak Dingle and Lisa Dingle

Lovely Zak and Lisa were the heart of Emmerdale for many years and one of its strongest couples.

Both had been married before – Zak to Nellie Dingle, and Lisa to Barry Clegg – but neither union was a happy one. In one another, Zak and Lisa found true love and contentment.

They became husband and wife in January 1998, and eleven months later Lisa unexpectedly gave birth to baby daughter Belle in the pigsty at Wishing Well Cottage. Like most marriages, Lisa and Zak had their normal ups and downs. His brood were forever causing dramas, but Lisa acted as the voice of reason and was the glue that held the family together.

In 2015, Zak had an affair with lodger Joanie Wright and fans were in uproar. They hated the storyline and felt it was totally out of character for Zak to cheat on his Lisa.
Zak subsequently divorced Lisa and married Joanie, but the Emmerdale writers soon realised they’d made a mistake. Joanie was killed off and Zak managed to persuade Lisa to give him another chance. Then came the cruelest blow of them all when Lisa revealed she was terminally ill.
There wasn’t a dry eye in the house as Lisa and Zak re-married in a beautiful church service. Hours later, Zak returned home to find Lisa had peacefully passed away on the sofa. He sobbed as he told his bride he wasn’t ready to let her go just yet, and neither we were.
Jack and Diane Sugden in Emmerdale
Jack found true happiness with lovely Diane (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)

Emmerdale greatest couples ranked: 5. Jack Sugden and Diane Sugden

Jack and Diane were friends long before they became lovers, which is probably what made their relationship so successful.

Romance blossomed after Woolpack landlady Diane supported Jack through the death of his second wife, Sarah. They were married in September 2004, while Diane was undergoing treatment for cancer. Jack’s previous marriages had been turbulent, but with Diane he found true contentment.

The only thing that came between the couple were Jack’s unruly kids. The constant rifts between Robert, Andy and Victoria put pressure on the couple’s marriage and they even separated for a while.

They found their way back to one another, but Diane was left heartbroken when Jack died in Spain while visiting his elderly mother, Annie. Diane brought Jack’s body back to the village and laid him to rest. She carried on being a mother figure to his offspring until her exit in 2021.

    6. Seth Armstrong and Betty Eagleton

Emmerdale golden couple Seth and Betty were childhood sweethearts who reconnected later in life.

In 1994, Betty arrived in the village in search of her old love. She had been widowed a few months earlier, and Seth was also on his own after the death of his wife, Meg. It was second time lucky for the pair, who threw a 1940s themed party for the locals in celebration of their love.

Betty wore the trousers in their relationship and was often telling Seth off for whatever mischievous thing he was getting up to. They almost split after Betty discovered Seth was broadcasting her daily routine to the village via a hidden webcam. But despite his cheeky ways, Seth was Betty’s rock and protector.

In 2003, the couple said goodbye to start a new life in Australia. Homesick Betty ended up returning home and Seth decided to fly back to his Betty. Sadly he died on the flight home, but Betty arranged for Seth’s body to be buried in the woods, just as he wanted.

Emmerdale greatest couples ranked: 7. Kim Tate and Dave Glover

Kim’s affair with farmhand Dave started out as lust, but he ended up being the love of her life.

The lady of the manor sought comfort in Dave’s hunky arms after her marriage to Frank hit the rocks. Dave was everything Frank wasn’t – young, energetic, exciting. The lovers couldn’t keep their hands off one another as they romped their way around the village.

It was a good few months before Frank realised what was going on. He busted their affair after planting hidden cameras in Dave’s cottage.

Things got even messier when Kim discovered she was pregnant. Frank offered her a million quid to dump Dave and name him as the father – which she did. Baby James was born and a DNA test confirmed he was Frank’s son.

Dave went on to marry Kathy Bates, but he and Kim couldn’t deny their true feelings. Realising they still loved one another, Kim and Dave made a plan to run away together with James. But tragically they never got that far.

On Christmas 1996, a fire broke out in the nursery of Home Farm and Dave was killed after rescuing James from the blaze.

    8. Andy and Katie Sugden

Childhood sweethearts Andy and Katie first met at Hotten Comprehensive and fell madly in love. At 16 the couple decided to try for a baby. Katie became pregnant, but heartbreak followed when she suffered a miscarriage.

After finishing his GCSEs, Andy went into farming, following in the Sugden family tradition. The demanding job meant long hours, and neglected Katie ended up seeking comfort in the arms of Andy’s brother, Robert. Katie and Robert’s steamy affair had viewers gripped as they waited to see which brother Katie would choose.

She went ahead with marrying Andy, but couldn’t resist Rob. When Andy discovered their betrayal he tried to murder his brother, and divorced Katie.

In the years that followed, Andy and Katie both remarried, but there was always a sense of unfinished business between them. In 2014, a decade after their first wedding, Andy and Katie said I do again. But the marriage lasted less than two months after Robert killed Katie to stop her outing his secret romance with Aaron.

Emmerdale greatest couples ranked: 9. Sam Dingle and Alice Dingle

It was love at first sight for Sam Dingle the day he met farmer’s daughter Alice Wilson. Both were the shy, nervous sorts, who lacked experience with the opposite sex, but they just clicked.

Early on in their relationship the couple relocated to Norfolk, where they ran a chicken farm together. But then Sam suddenly returned to the village  and stunned his family by revealing Alice was pregnant. The thought of becoming a father scared Sam, so Alice agreed to move back to Emmerdale so they could raise their baby with the help of the Dingles.

The couple’s happiness was shattered when Alice was diagnosed with cancer. She was advised to terminate her pregnancy to start chemotherapy, but she refused. Alice gave birth to a baby boy, who she and Sam named Samson. Alice then began treatment for her cancer and she and Sam married in a tearjerking ceremony.

Tragedy struck weeks later when Alice was told her chemo wasn’t working. Crippled with pain from her illness, she made a pact with Sam to help end her suffering.

Alice died on July 31, 2006 after Sam assisted in her suicide by giving her an overdose of morphine. She passed away shortly afterwards in his arms.

    10. Paddy Kirk and Chas Dingle

Chas has always had a weakness for bad boys, but changed type when she got together with dependable Paddy. A world away from her awful exes, Paddy treated Chas with love, care and respect. It’s just a shame she didn’t extend him the same courtesy.

First time round, Chas cheated on Paddy with Carl King and he threw her out. It was a good few years before Paddy agreed to give things another go, and fans really enjoyed their renewed romance.

The couple experienced tragedy in 2018 with the loss of their baby daughter Grace. Rainbow baby Eve arrived the year after, and on Christmas Day 2020 Chas and Paddy became husband and wife.

Viewers wanted them to stay together, but the Emmerdale writers had other ideas. Chas’s affair with nasty Al Chapman destroyed their marriage and pushed Paddy to the brink of suicide.

Paddy has since found happiness with new missus Mandy, while Chas might be about to get engaged to boyfriend, Liam Cavanagh. Her and Paddy remain friends and co-parents.

Charity and Cain Dingle nearly kiss in Emmerdale

Emmerdale greatest couples ranked: 11. Cain and Charity Dingle

It’s been a long time since Cain and Charity last romantic entanglement, but we couldn’t leave them off our list. Based on chemistry alone, they are one of the soap’s most iconic couples.

Emmerdale’s answer to Bonnie and Clyde have a long and complicated past, dating back to when they were underage teens. Charity got pregnant with daughter Debbie at 13, but she and Cain chose to give their daughter up for adoption.

When Debbie finally re-entered their lives 13 years later, Charity and Cain decided to try again. What followed was years of make ups and break ups. The lovers frequently fell out, but their passionate connection always drew them back together. In 2009 Cain decided he was ready to get married. He proposed to Charity and she accepted. But on the day of their wedding she decided she couldn’t go through with it.

The pair’s relationship finally fell apart after Cain bedded glamour puss Faye Lamb. Charity got her own by starting up with Jai Sharma.

Apart from their brief fling back in 2016, Charity and Cain have remained nothing more than partners in crime. But we still reckon there’s some unfinished business there.

    12. Marlon and Tricia Dingle

Marlon has been married five times, but many feel his first wife Tricia was ‘the one’.

The cute couple were love young’s dream and perfectly complimented one another. But that’s not to say they didn’t have their troubles. Early on in their romance, barmaid Tricia agreed to marry Joe Fisher so he could stay in the country with his boyfriend Jason Kirk. Marlon didn’t approve of the arrangement, so they broke up.

It wasn’t long before Tricia and Marlon were reunited – and engaged! They married in a surprise ceremony on Valentine’s Day 2003. But when Tricia temporarily moved to India to star in a Bollywood film, Marlon had a foolish one-night stand with his own cousin Charity.

When Tricia returned home and discovered Marlon’s betrayal she was heartbroken. She decided to leave him and the Dales, but changed her mind at the last minute after Marlon wrote her a list of all things he adored about her.

Deciding to give their marriage another chance, Tricia ran over to The Woolpack on New Year’s Eve 2004 to tell Marlon the good news. But tragedy struck when a huge storm hit the village and Tricia was crushed by the pub’s falling chimney.

She was rushed to hospital and spent several days on life-support, before Marlon made the devastating decision to switch the machine off.

On Christmas Day 2000, nearly 10 million tuned in to watch Ashley and Bernice tie the knot in a romantic ceremony. Their festive nuptials was one of the few Emmerdale weddings that actually went without a hitch.

Sadly the same couldn’t be said for Ashley and Bernice’s marriage. Only weeks after she pledged to remain faithful, Bernice began an affair with Spanish chef Carlos Diaz. She fell pregnant with baby Gabby and didn’t know who the father was.

A DNA test later confirmed Gabby was in fact Ashley’s, but there was no going back for the Thomas’s marriage. They split and Bernice fled the Dales shortly afterwards, leaving Ashley to raise Gabby on his own.

    14. Biff Fowler and Lady Tara Oakwell

Lady Tara was a proper posh bird. But that didn’t stop her lusting after a bit of rough.

Her passionate affair with Biff Fowler began after she employed him to be her personal chauffeur. After weeks of sneaking around the village together, Tara and Biff went public. But he then broke it off after finding out she’d evicted folk from their homes.

Tara went on the rebound with wealthy Lord Michael Thornfield, who was a chum of her late dad. He proposed and she accepted, but on the eve of their wedding Tara ended up back in bed with Biff. She asked if he’d be her bit on the side, but Biff wasn’t comfortable with that idea.

In the end, Tara broke Biff’s heart and married moneybags Michael. But she soon realised the grass wasn’t greener.

Emmerdale greatest couples ranked: 15. Jimmy and Nicola King

Our list wouldn’t be complete with Jimmy and Nicola. Unlike the rest of his brothers, Jimmy has been lucky enough to know the love of a good woman. But that’s not to say his marriage to Nicola hasn’t been without its challenges.

Things got off to a rocky start after Jimmy reckoned Nicola was only with him for his money. She then fell pregnant unexpectedly, but the birth of their daughter Angelica brought the couple closer together. They married and had a very short stint being landlord and landlady of The Woolpack.

In 2011, Jimmy was involved in a road accident and suffered amnesia as a result. He was tricked into an affair with Kelly Windsor and fathered her son, Elliot. Jimmy also had another son – Carl Jr – three years later after a mix-up with a fertility clinic. Nicola was rocked by both Elliot and Carl’s arrivals, but has helped Jimmy raise the lads, even coming to think of them as her own.

Last year the couple faced their toughest test to date after Angelica was imprisoned for causing the car accident which killed Heath Hope. As well as having to cope with Angel being banged up, Jimmy and Nicola discovered they’d been harbouring an abuser when Tom King showed his true colours.

  • As John proves his commitment to Aaron, I think it’s time to move on from the past and let Robron go – OPINION

As John proves his commitment to Aaron, I think it’s time to move on from the past and let Robron go – OPINION

A complicated, explosive, highly toxic mess; the marriage of Robert Sugden and Aaron Dingle (or ‘Robron,’ for short) is perhaps the most talked-about Emmerdale relationship of all time. Well of course it is – the shippers won’t stop talking about Robron.

But before we go into why this writer thinks Robert and Aaron should stay in the past – first, some context.

Robert and Aaron lie next to each other, post-coitus
Robert and Aaron rolled in the hay soon after meeting (Credit: ITV/YouTube)

Robron: A history of a toxic relationship on Emmerdale

The union of the second-worst Sugden (lest we forget Andy’s wife-beating phase) and the least entertaining Dingle, the relationship of Robert and Aaron was toxic from the start, with Rob initially blackmailing ‘ron into robbing Home Farm.

Learning that Aaron was gay, Robert’s interest was piqued, and the pair hooked up. After realising that Robert was cheating on bride-to-be Chrissie, Katie snapped the pair mid-kiss and threatened to tell all. As a scuffle broke out, Robron claimed its first victim, and Katie fell to her death.

With Katie silenced, Robert and Chrissie married. However, he carried on seeing Aaron. Their toxic dance continued even as more people learned about the affair. This led to Robert almost killing and then blackmailing Paddy – subsequently holding a bound-and-gagged Aaron at gunpoint when he sought revenge. Truly, a match made in the stars.

When their affair became public knowledge, you’d think they could put everyone out of their misery and just be together. But before that could happen, somebody shot Robert. Prime suspect Aaron’s name was cleared when it was revealed that it had been Ross who dunnit – at the behest of his own adoptive brother, Andy.

Aaron and Robert exchange a simmering look on Emmerdale

    Robron II: the next level

In 2016, the pair finally stopped trying to kill each other long enough for an actual conversation. Discovering that Aaron’s dad had raped him as a child, Robert was there in his time of need. In true Robert fashion, this involved a few major crimes – paying a neighbour to lie that Gordon had raped him too.

A jury found Gordon guilty in spite of Robert’s meddling, and he eventually took his own life in prison. Always one to make it about himself, Robert then found himself in hot water with Aaron for not passing on a letter from his (now dead) dad.

They eventually reconciled and things were stable for a while, moving in together and even deciding to marry. When Aaron was sentenced to a year in prison for possession of drugs, he started pushing Robert away. Robert sought comfort in Rebecca White, with whom he fathered Seb.

The pair split when the truth came out, but couldn’t stay away from each other for long.

Robron III: Parting is such sweet sorrow as Robert leaves Emmerdale

After reuniting, Robert and Aaron decided to have a child together, and began the process of looking for a surrogate.

That hypothetical child was saved from a life under two people (one a morally bankrupt criminal, the other a tormented criminal with anger issues) who should absolutely not under any circumstances be trusted with a child’s welfare when Robert killed a man.

Robert was sentenced to fourteen years without parole. While behind bars, he learned that he was being transferred to The Isle of Wight, apparently putting an end to the saga of Robert and Aaron once and for all. If only!

Aaron glares at Mack on Emmerdale

    Let Robron go, Emmerdale fans

Fast-forward four years later, and fans are still talking about Robron. It’s hard to engage in any discussion about Aaron (still in the soap) without someone loudly bringing up Robert (hasn’t been in the soap since 2019) and bashing everyone and everything else.

No sooner did Aaron return to screens in 2023 than fans began demanding his other half follow. Aaron is currently at the heart of one of Emmerdale’s biggest stories, but once again, fans have found a way to make that all about Robron too.

And while I can take or leave Aaron, it does a disservice to the character – and Danny Miller – to have him constantly defined by the man in his life. Or the lack of him, as it were.

With Aaron currently holding the bag for Anthony’s murder, Robron shippers are wondering whether this might mean they reunite behind bars. As long as the cameras don’t follow them there, I wouldn’t be opposed.

    John and Aaron on Emmerdale
Aaron’s moved on… but his fans haven’t (Credit: ITV)

    Aaron’s new man

Pity poor John Sugden in all of this. While the jury’s still out on that one (serial killer? conman? weirdo?) he never really stood a chance with Robron fans. While he’s raising a few red flags of his own, one suspects that much of the hate he gets online is for not being Robert.

This writer personally finds John to be an intriguing figure – and his relationship with Aaron rather sweet. Why not give it time to breathe before declaring it a failure? Can Aaron not have some fun and stability in his miserable little life before forcing him into another agonising dilemma? Would we really rather see him behind bars with Robert than without?

Time will tell how Johron (Aarjohn?) plays out, but to pretend that he and Robert were ever the height of romance is, frankly, a bit deluded.

    Robron IV: Robron’s revenge?

What all this comes down to, ultimately, is a personal vendetta. Mine, against Robert and Aaron. I’ll be the first to admit that I never enjoyed Robert as a character (in any iteration), nor any of the actors who portrayed him.

Whatever the case, the return of Robert is inevitable – fan demand is too high, the possibilities too juicy (his ex is currently with his long-lost relative!)

The Sudgen name is too important to Emmerdale’s legacy for him to stay away forever. And, for better and worse, the name Aaron will be forever linked with Robert Sugden.

What I’m saying is, Robron is inevitable.

  • Aaron to go to prison and reunite with Robert in there, a new fan theory predicts

Aaron to go to prison and reunite with Robert in there, a new fan theory predicts

A new Emmerdale fan theory has suggested that Aaron Dingle could go to prison for killing Anthony Fox – and will reunite with former husband Robert in there.

Aaron killed monster Anthony after learing what he had done to Ruby as a teenager. Confronting the old man, memories of his own trauma at the hands of Gordon came flooding back. And, as Anthony provoked him with a series of vile comments at Ruby’s expense, Aaron lashed out, beating him to within an inch of his life.

Aaron to face jail time after killing Anthony?

As Aaron fled, those inches seemingly caught up with Anthony. He returned to the scene of the crime with John, only to find Anthony dead. With Aaron now in the frame for murder, the pair set about cleaning up the crime scene.

But, soaps being soap, the truth is bound to come out eventually. And if Aaron should find himself in prison, some viewers have wondered whether he might be reunited with a certain fan favourite husband.

Robert Sugden, after all, is currently in prison serving time after murdering his sister’s rapist, Lee. Soon after, he was transferred to a new prison in the Isle of Wight. This put an end to their star-crossed relationship… but that hasn’t stopped fans for begging for a Robron reunion.

Aaron to reunite with Robert in prison, Emmerdale fans predict

Writing on social media in the aftermath of Aaron’s crime, fans shared their theories as to whether prison might bring him closer to ex-husband Rob.

“Getting anxiety thinking of the possibility that Aaron could go to prison for this.. the only upside being that Robert is in there,” wrote one fan on X.

“What if Aaron gets thrown in jail for killing Anthony and gets sentenced to the Isle of Wight. I’m a big RobRon fan and desperately want those two back together. I wish Ryan Hawley would come back to Emmerdale (and help revive the show) even if it was just for one episode!” another speculated, over on Reddit.

“Have a feeling Aaron and Rob will end up in the same prison…” a third hinted.

Could Robert and Aaron reunite behind bars?

  • 6 of the greatest Emmerdale comebacks – from Kim Tate’s return from the dead to Robert Sugden’s revival

6 of the greatest Emmerdale comebacks – from Kim Tate’s return from the dead to Robert Sugden’s revival

Dramatic comebacks of iconic characters is what all Emmerdale fans live for. Recently, we’ve been treated to the return of Kim’s nemesis Joe Tate – who’s back in the village after a six-year absence.

Joe was unveiled as the mastermind behind Will and Peter’s plot to bring down Kim, and we can’t wait to see what other wicked tricks he’s got up his sleeve.

His perfectly staged return has also got us thinking about the other Emmerdale comebacks that really hit the mark. Here are six characters we were delighted to see back on our screens…

Best Emmerdale comebacks includes Kim Tate

Kim is the queen of the comeback, and one in particular has gone down in Emmerdale history.

It was 1997 when Kim did a disappearing act following the death of her lover Dave Glover. She paid a lookalike to drive her car around the village to make it look as if she was still around. But then the woman was found dead behind the wheel and Frank was charged with ‘Kim’s murder’.

Kim made a spectacular return and confronted Frank in the living room at Home Farm. The shock of seeing her back from the dead caused him to suffer a fatal heart attack. Instead of ringing for an ambulance, Kim just stood over and watched Frank die.

Once she was sure he was gone, Kim calmly pulled out her make-up compact, powdered her nose, then used the mirror to check Frank had stopped breathing. Oh, and she ended up receiving half of Home Farm in Frank’s will. What an icon!

    Aaron Dingle

There was a lot of hype surrounding Danny Miller’s return to Emmerdale in 2014.

After two years away from the soap, would the award-winning actor be able to recapture the magic he’d brought to the role of Aaron first time round? As it turned out, yes!

Aaron returned to stop his best mate Adam getting involved in a robbery with Ross Barton and Donna Windsor. That particular plot was pretty forgettable, but what was to follow was certainly not.

The Emmerdale writers had decided it was time for Aaron to have a new love interest. And just weeks after his comeback, the moody mechanic shared that first forbidden kiss with Robert Sugden. And with that Robron was born!

Robert Sugden standing on the stairs of Home Farm in Emmerdale

Robert Sugden makes the list for best Emmerdale comebacks

Robert’s return to Emmerdale in 2014 was another triumph!

The legacy character had been away for five years when the soap announced his return. It was confirmed the role of Robert had been recast, with actor Ryan Hawley taking over from Karl Davies.

Any concern that Rob might have lost his ruthless charm disappeared the moment he reappeared on screen. He was still the same slippery charmer, and had managed to nab himself a millionairess fiancée, Chrissie. Now heir to the Home Farm fortune, Robert took great delight flaunting his wealthy status as he reignited his feud with Andy and Katie

Within weeks it was hard to imagine anyone but Ryan portraying Robert. The character’s addictive love affair with Aaron led to one of the most popular partnerships in all of Soapland.

    Charity Dingle in Emmerdale

    Charity Dingle

In 2015 Charity was sentenced to two years in prison for perverting the course of justice. She was released after a year, but when Cain and Moira went to pick her up, they discovered she’d already left.

As it turned out the crafty minx was straight back to her old tricks. Moments after leaving the clink, Charity went on the rob and stole a red Ferrari from a nearby dealership. She took it for a spin, but disaster struck enroute when Charity ploughed the vehicle into a field and got stuck in the mud.

Later that day, Cain and Moira spotted the stolen Ferrari. They were gobsmacked when Charity stepped out, declaring she couldn’t come back from prison with nothing! Moira dealt with the situation by taking the car back to the dealership, while the police were hot on their heels.

But the shocks kept on coming when Charity then entered The Woolpack and declared she’d bought Diane Sugden’s half of the pub! She then blackmailed former lover Ross Barton into coughing up the cash for the purchase.

    Ross Barton

The long-awaited return of the Barton bad boy was one of our 2024 highlights.

Ross was a favourite amongst the fans during his first stint in the Dales and always at the centre of the drama. When news of his return was announced, actor Michael Parr, teased there would be fireworks for his character. And he wasn’t wrong!

During his time away, Ross had turned his hand to bareknuckle boxing and was unveiled as Billy Fletcher’s opponent. Strutting in to whoops and cheers from the crowd, Ross ripped off his sleeveless hoodie to show a rather impressive six pack.

Now that’s how to make an entrance!

    Tina Dingle

Zak Dingle’s funeral on Emmerdale was full of surprises – the biggest one being the comeback of his long lost daughter, Tina.

The character, who was previously played by Jacqueline Pirie, hadn’t been seen in the Dales for 28 years. So you can imagine everyone’s shock when she rocked up at Zak’s graveside. Belle didn’t even recognise her half-sister, which is hardly surprising seeing as they’d never met.

Now played by Brassic star Samantha Power, Tina claimed she was back to pay her respects. But there was an ulterior motive to her return. After causing carnage at the funeral, which resulted in her being carted off by the police, Tina tried to lay claim to Zak’s will.  Then came the bombshell that she was Vinny’s real mum, a secret which she tried to blackmail Mandy with.

She may have wreaked havoc amongst the Dingles, but Tina Mark Two did not get a positive reaction from the fans. They took to social media to voice their disappointment, with some saying the recast was an insult to the original actress.

Samantha has shared she’d be up for Tina coming back to cause more mischief, so let’s see what 2025 has in store.

Christmas in Soapland is the gift that keeps on giving, and Emmerdale has treated us to some spectacular seasonal episodes.

Along with the usual turkey, trimmings and tantrums, December 25th in the village often brings the most dramatic births, marriages and deaths.

So here are our picks of the 11 best Emmerdale Christmas moments…

Emmerdale best Christmas episodes: Vic dies and Belle is born 1998

Birth and death was the theme for the Emmerdale 1998 Christmas episode.

Postmaster Vic Windsor was killed off in a bungled armed robbery by Andy Sugden’s dad, Billy Hopwood. A fight ensued after Vic caught Billy trying to break into his Post Office safe. Billy – who was armed with a shotgun – threatened Vic, then pushed him into a set of shelves. Critically injured by the impact, Vic pleaded with Billy to ring an ambulance, but the cowardly criminal scarpered. Poor Vic was left to die alone, as 11.1 million tuned in to mourn the passing of one of their favourite characters.

While Vic was breathing his last, over at Wishing Well Cottage the Dingles were receiving a surprise delivery. Belle entered the world after Lisa gave birth in the family’s pigsty. But the biggest shock was she didn’t even she was she pregnant. No wonder why Zak fainted at the sight of his wife cradling their newborn daughter!

Bernice and Ashley tie the knot 2000

Ashley and Bernice’s sweet love story led them all the way to the altar on Christmas Day 2000.

Fans had waited a long time to see the vicar and barmaid say I do, and the service was watched by an audience of almost 10 million. Bernice looked beautiful in a traditional ivory gown and veil, while Ashley was dapper in his dog collar. In a break with usual tradition, the wedding went without a hitch.

But sadly the fairytale wasn’t to last. Less than a year later, Ashley and Bernice’s marriage was over after she confessed to an affair with sexy chef Carlos Diaz.

Louise Appleton kills her stalker boyfriend 2002

Danger loomed in the 2002 festive episode when Woolpack landlady Louise Appleton discovered the identity of her secret stalker.

Louise was being hounded by creepy messages from a mystery tormenter, but had no idea it was actually her boyfriend, Ray Mullen. Having convinced Louise she was in danger, Ray then persuaded her to move away with him to Italy.

As Christmas Day arrived, the couple left Emmerdale and were on their way to the airport. But the journey took a sinister turn when Louise realised Ray was the one who’d been making her life hell.

She fought back and Ray lost control of the wheel, forcing the car off the road. With Ray knocked unconscious, Louise managed to flee the scene and make it back to the village, but he wasn’t far behind.

The drama continued on Boxing Day when Ray arrived at Mill Cottage for a final showdown with Louise. A violent fight ensued, which resulted in Louise killing her evil boyfriend.

Louise was now a murderer, but got away with it after her friend Terry Woods helped make it look as if Ray had died by accident.

Emmerdale best Christmas episodes: Who killed Tom King 2006

Tom King’s murder stands out as one of Emmerdale’s finest Christmas episodes.

The nasty King patriarch was killed at Home Farm on the day of his wedding to Rosemary Sinclair. Tom was getting ready for the reception in an upstairs bedroom when he was confronted by a shadowy figure. An argument broke out and Tom was bludgeoned with a bronze ornament before being shoved through a window. He fell to his death in front of the shocked locals, who were gathered to celebrate his big day.

The shock murder sparked a huge whodunnit, but the suspect list was rather long due to the amount of enemies Tom had. Those in the frame included Tom’s three sons, Jimmy, Matthew and Carl, and even his new bride Rosemary.

Fans had to wait a whole five months before it was revealed that Carl was the killer. He’d finished his father off after Tom threatened to disinherit him unless he dumped girlfriend, Chas Dingle.

Christmas 2008 was nearly Victoria’s last after she fell through a freezing lake.

Vic had been out drinking in the grounds of Home Farm with her mates when she stepped onto a frozen lake. Suddenly the ice beneath her gave way and the teen was plunged into the sub zero waters.

She was saved by Daz Eden’s quick-thinking actions, as he risked his own life to rescue Victoria. When she regained consciousness, Victoria revealed she’d seen a body floating in the murky lake.

The corpse turned out to be rapist police officer Shane Doyle, who had been murdered weeks previously by Jasmine Thomas.

Chas jilts Carl at the altar 2010

Emmerdale love a festive wedding drama – and Chas Dingle and Carl King‘s disastrous 2010 nuptials definitely delivered.

The pair’s toxic relationship imploded after Chas learnt Carl had been bedding barmaid Eve Jenson. Charity urged her cousin to take the cheating toe rag for every penny – which is exactly what she did! Chas popped the question to Carl and pretended she was pregnant with his kid. A wedding was swiftly arranged and Chas asked Eve to be her bridesmaid, putting her in a revolting peach puffball dress to ensure maximum humiliation.

With the stage set, Chas then dumped Carl in front of the entire congregation, outing his betrayal with Eve and revealing there was no baby. Now that’s how you do revenge.

Emmerdale best Christmas episodes: Robert sabotages Andy and Katie’s wedding 2014

Andy Sugden and Katie Addyman hoped it would be second time lucky when they set the date for December 25, 2014. Vengeful Robert had other ideas.

Unable to back down in the bitter war with his brother and the woman he’d once loved, Robert had already given Andy a black eye before his big day. But he wasn’t going to stop there.

As Andy and Katie exchanged vows at the altar they were horrified to realise Robert had sabotaged their rings. Inside her gold band was inscribed the words ‘village bike’, while Andy had ‘village idiot’ inside of his.

But Robert wasn’t the only one who tried to disrupt the nuptials. Andy’s broken-hearted ex Bernice Blackstock also screamed abuse at the congregation of St Mary’s and had to be restrained by Diane.

Despite all the interruptions, Katie and Andy did actually get end up getting wed – but what a day!

    Robert’s dream sequence 2017

Robert Sugden took centre stage in 2017, in a festive offering that marked a change of direction for Emmerdale.

In a break away from the traditional style storytelling, the episode acted as a standalone one. It was described by Emmerdale’s then boss Iain MacLeod as “Groundhog Day meets A Christmas Carol with a little nod to the film Don’t Look Now.”

The episode saw Robert wake up multiple times on Christmas morning, facing a different reality each time. In each sequence, Robert was visited by the ghosts of Christmas future, as he saw the impact of his selfish and reckless behaviour.

Returning to present day, Robert made a desperate attempt to right his wrongs, hoping to rekindle his romance with on/off lover Aaron Dingle.

The installment really broke barriers for soap, and was enjoyed by 5.1 viewers. Unfortunately they didn’t get the Christmas gift of a Robron reunion, but that followed shortly afterwards.

Paddy had decided to surprise Chas with a romantic wedding and had been busy making plans to ensure the day was perfect. But it nearly didn’t go ahead after Chas suggested Christmas weddings were cursed, and Paddy quickly cancelled.

When Chas realised what Paddy had been planning she had a sudden change of heart. She summoned Paddy to the church, where she asked him to marry her! The couple exchanged vows in an intimate ceremony with only Marlon, Aaron and Bear in attendance. And Chas looked stunning in a gorgeous red dress that Paddy had purchased specially.

Afterwards, the happy couple returned to The Woolpack, which had been transformed into a winter wonderland, and enjoyed their first dance as husband and wife.

In the lead up to Christmas, Harry had kidnapped and tortured Mack as payback for him dumping his daughter. Bit extreme, no? Harry fully intended to finish Mack off (with Chloe watching), but Charity got wind of what was going on.

She tailed Harry back to the dingy warehouse where he was holding Mack. Watching from the shadows, Charity witnessed Harry drawing a gun from his pocket to use on Mack.

  • Fans beg for Robert Sugden to return in 2025 – here’s whether a comeback is possible

Fans beg for Robert Sugden to return in 2025 – here’s whether a comeback is possible

Emmerdale fans aren’t enjoying Aaron Dingle’s romance with John Sugden and have called for Aaron’s ex, Robert Sugden, to return next year.

Aaron first hooked up with John in August, after arranging to meet him via a dating app. It was later revealed that John was a Sugden and the secret half brother of Robert.

Now, with both Aaron and John having a link to Robert, fans want Robert to return to the Dales in 2025. But where is Robert and is a comeback possible?

    Where is Robert Sugden?

Robert left Emmerdale in 2019 after being sent to prison for killing his sister’s rapist.

During a night out, Victoria Sugden met a man called Lee Posner. He wouldn’t take no for an answer and later he raped Victoria in her own home.

Victoria left it a while before reporting the attack meaning there was no physical evidence and the case was eventually dropped. However, Lee continued to taunt Victoria and her family and one day, Robert lost it and hit Lee over the head with a shovel.

Lee survived the attack long enough to tell police Robert had been responsible, but later died from a intracerebral haemorrhage. Robert was sentenced to 14 years in prison, leaving fans devastated that Robron was no more.

Fans demand a Robert Sugden return

Scenes this week have seen Aaron and John confess their love to each other. While some fans were moved by the scenes, many couldn’t help but point out the lack of chemistry between the pair and reminisce about Aaron’s previous relationship with Robert.

“NOOO WE ALL WANT ROBERT,” one fan said on Instagram. Another added: “I don’t like Aaron with John, it will always be Robert and Aaron!! Please come back Robert!!”

“No one will compare to Robert,” a third fan wrote, with a fourth writing: “Aaron belongs to Robert. You need to bring them back together for good!”

A fifth fan said: “I wish Robert would come back. Aaron and Robert were perfect together!,” with another writing: “John is no Robert!! Bring back Robert in 2025, Aaron belongs to Robert.”

Is a comeback for Robert possible?

Although, it’s only been 5 years since he was sentenced to 14 years in prison, this is soap land where anything is possible. Viewers may also remember that back in 2021, Lee’s brother Luke revealed to their mum Wendy that on the day Lee was attacked by Robert, Lee had beaten Luke up after discovering he was in a relationship with a man.

Luke said he fought back, resulting in Lee falling down and hitting his head. Hours later he was attacked by Robert. If Luke’s confession becomes known, Robert could potentially get out of jail on appeal.

Robert’s name has cropped up a lot lately, with fans hoping it means he’s on his way back. One theory is that John isn’t really who he says he is. Fans have speculated that he could have been in prison with Robert. Could Robert be the key to unlocking the truth about John Sugden and Aidan Moore?

In addition, Ross Barton made a return to the village recently after six years away and he revealed that Rebecca White had died. Rebecca was the mother of Robert’s son Seb – another reason for Robert to come back.

The most recent Robert was played by Ryan Hawley, who has starred in All Creatures Great and Small, Silent Witness and Casualty since leaving Emmerdale.

  • Viewers believe John is definitely ‘lying’ about Aidan Moore after he opens up to Aaron – so just what is he hiding?

Viewers believe John is definitely ‘lying’ about Aidan Moore after he opens up to Aaron – so just what is he hiding?

In last night’s episode of Emmerdale (Tuesday, December 17),  John opened up to Aaron about his past with the mysterious Aidan Moore. But the conversation has left viewers more convinced than ever that he is lying.

When John first arrived on our screens earlier this year, fans were quick to assume he was hiding something. That’s when we were treated to the mystery of the dog tag with the name Aidan Moore.

John explained that away as someone he cared about who died in Afghanistan as he couldn’t save him. But is he being honest?

For months fans have been deeming John as the ‘fake Sugden’ as they believe there is a bigger secret at play. But exactly what that is remains unknown.

Fans still believe John is lying in Emmerdale

While many fans have criticised the show for appearing to try and copy Aaron’s relationship with Robert, some others feel this may be a hint at John’s true plans.

There are many theories out there; Robert somehow wronged John and so he is taking revenge against those he loved, or maybe John actually is Aidan Moore. Either way, there has to be more than we know. Right?

Taking to X (formerly known as Twitter) after last night’s episode, viewers all could agree on one thing; John is hiding a big secret.

One wrote: “You could reveal John was a serial killer and I would believe it. It’s got to be one of two things with him. Either the writers worry they won’t find a better pairing than Aaron and Robert so they’re trying to write him as the ‘perfect guy,’ or it’s intentional and he is a threat.”

Another added: “So we’re all in agreement that John has stolen Victoria’s identity and isn’t actually him, right?”

A third penned: “I don’t trust John at all. Sorry. He’s lying and I get pure bad vibes from him.”

John and Aaron camping in the woods on Emmerdale

Could it lead to a happy return?

However, one fan hoped that whatever his secret is, it will lead to the reunion we all want – Robert back in the village.

They wrote: “There is something off about John. I don’t trust him at all. And now I’m worried about Aaron because he lets his guard down too easily. I just hope the whole storyline is leading to a return for Robert.”

So could John or Aidan have served time with Robert inside? It would have given him the access to all of those he cares about most in the village. So far, it’s definitely a strong contender.

And a Robert return is definitely what we all would like to see. If Emmerdale bosses can bring back Ross Barton this year, why can’t they do the same for Robert?

So, is John being honest? Or is there more to come out about the new Sugden?

  • Emmerdale John isn’t in love with Aaron – it’s all a revenge plot, fans predict

Emmerdale John isn’t in love with Aaron – it’s all a revenge plot, fans predict

Could John Sugden in Emmerdale actually be playing Aaron? A very convincing fan theory thinks so.

When John arrived in the village earlier this year, it felt there was more to meet the eye. But nothing has really happened… yet.

Last night’s episode saw John once again look at the dog tag he keeps with him; with the name Aidan Moore. And that’s exactly why a lot of Emmerdale fans think he is hiding something more sinister.

A new theory on social media predicts that John’s character is all a sham, and he is actually there to get revenge on someone else; Robert Sugden.

Emmerdale John is out for revenge, predicts fans.

After last night’s episode which saw John take Aaron on an unwanted camping trip, fans can’t help but feel there’s more to come.

One fan wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter): “Until now I genuinely thought it was just poor casting. But for the first time I’m convinced John is up to something. Some revenge plot against Robert, because he is so cold to Aaron.”

For a while fans have complained about the lack of chemistry between Aaron and John, and while it may have been down to everyone comparing them to the loved Robron, maybe it was actually supposed to be that way.

Robert is currently serving a 14-year prison sentence for the murder of Lee Posner. But fans have been desperate for him to return.

With this new theory, could Robert have had a history with John himself? Or did he have one with the mysterious Aidan Moore? And John is out for revenge over whatever happened.

If John does know Robert, it makes sense that he inserted himself into the village as a Sugden. He may have heard all about their family from Rob, so he knew exactly who to talk to and what to say when he arrived.

    John Sugden Emmerdale

Everyone notices the similarities in both relationships

One thing that has not escaped fans’ attention is the way it seems Emmerdale are trying to recreate Robert and Aaron’s relationship.

The pair had their first kiss beside a broken down car on a lay-by, exactly like Robert and Aaron, and now they’re confessing their feelings for each other in the woods. Just like Robert and Aaron.

So, if the revenge theory is true, could John maybe know Robert from prison? Perhaps he spent some time inside with him, they got close, and Rob told him all about his relationship with Aaron.

If so, then Aaron could be set for a bigger and more dangerous storyline next year than anyone is ready for. And just maybe, this is what we need to get Rob back on our screens.

Do you think there is more to John than meets the eye?
