The 15 greatest Emmerdale couples ranked: From Robron’s epic romance to Kim Tate’s one true love

It’s Valentine’s Day in Emmerdale, so in celebration of all things love we wanted to celebrate the soap’s greatest ever couples.
From old fashioned romances to red hot affairs, these pairings have captured fan’s hearts and achieved iconic status. It was a tough task to narrow it down, but we’ve picked our favourite 15 and ranked them in order.
But which couple took the crown?

Emmerdale greatest couples ranked: 1. Robron

Taking the top spot are Emmerdale’s most ever shipped couple – Robert and Aaron. Can you believe it’s been over 10 years since their first kiss? At the time, viewers knew Aaron was gay, but Robert was engaged to Home Farm heiress, Chrissie White.

What started out as a forbidden affair turned into one of soap’s most electric partnerships. Robron mania took over and their supporters couldn’t get enough, immortalising their favourites in artwork and fan fiction.

Their love story may have been addictive, but it was never straightforward.  Even after they became an official couple, Aaron’s past demons and Robert’s roving eye threatened to destroy what they had. When Aaron went to prison, Robert slept with Rebecca White and got her pregnant.

In 2018, after one previous failed attempted, Robron tied the knot. Their romantic wedding was watched by millions, but less than a year later Robert was jailed for the murder of rapist Lee Posner. He refused to let Aaron waste the next 14 years of his life and filed for divorce.

Aaron has kept it in the family and is currently bedding Robert’s half-brother, John. But we all know which Sugden is his true soulmate.

    2. Eric Pollard and Val Pollard

Eric’s has had a lot of ladies in his life, but there’s only one he’s ever truly loved and that was his Valerie. The fifth Mrs Pollard was feisty, ruthless and manipulative. In other words, Eric’s perfect match.

Partners in the bedroom as well as in business, the couple ran The Grange B&B together for years. They became foster parents to teenage runaway Amy Wyatt, and Val also took young Finn Barton under her wing.

The Pollards’ marriage had its fair share of ups and downs. While taking some apart from one another, Val slept with a man on holiday and contracted HIV. The heartbreaking discovery caused Eric to disown his wife, although he eventually forgave what she’d done.

In 2015, the pair made plans to flee the village after Val was faced with a prison sentence for committing fraud. They conspired to fake Val’s death then Eric was going to join her for a new life overseas. But sadly they never got that far when Val became one of the victims of the summer fete helicopter crash.

Eric still regularly visits Val’s grave to reminisce over the good old days.

Emmerdale greatest couples ranked: 3. Cain Dingle and Moira Dingle

The past decade has thrown up all kinds of challenges for Cain and Moira. They’ve endured the death of Moira’s daughter Holly, her alcohol addiction, his prison stint and numerous affairs – on both sides.

Cain has been Moira’s rock in recent weeks as she’s undergone radiotherapy treatment. But it could be one betrayal too much when she finds out he had sex with Ruby while she was in surgery having her brain tumour removed.

    4. Zak Dingle and Lisa Dingle

Lovely Zak and Lisa were the heart of Emmerdale for many years and one of its strongest couples.

Both had been married before – Zak to Nellie Dingle, and Lisa to Barry Clegg – but neither union was a happy one. In one another, Zak and Lisa found true love and contentment.

They became husband and wife in January 1998, and eleven months later Lisa unexpectedly gave birth to baby daughter Belle in the pigsty at Wishing Well Cottage. Like most marriages, Lisa and Zak had their normal ups and downs. His brood were forever causing dramas, but Lisa acted as the voice of reason and was the glue that held the family together.

In 2015, Zak had an affair with lodger Joanie Wright and fans were in uproar. They hated the storyline and felt it was totally out of character for Zak to cheat on his Lisa.
Zak subsequently divorced Lisa and married Joanie, but the Emmerdale writers soon realised they’d made a mistake. Joanie was killed off and Zak managed to persuade Lisa to give him another chance. Then came the cruelest blow of them all when Lisa revealed she was terminally ill.
There wasn’t a dry eye in the house as Lisa and Zak re-married in a beautiful church service. Hours later, Zak returned home to find Lisa had peacefully passed away on the sofa. He sobbed as he told his bride he wasn’t ready to let her go just yet, and neither we were.

Emmerdale greatest couples ranked: 5. Jack Sugden and Diane Sugden

Jack and Diane were friends long before they became lovers, which is probably what made their relationship so successful.

Romance blossomed after Woolpack landlady Diane supported Jack through the death of his second wife, Sarah. They were married in September 2004, while Diane was undergoing treatment for cancer. Jack’s previous marriages had been turbulent, but with Diane he found true contentment.

The only thing that came between the couple were Jack’s unruly kids. The constant rifts between Robert, Andy and Victoria put pressure on the couple’s marriage and they even separated for a while.

They found their way back to one another, but Diane was left heartbroken when Jack died in Spain while visiting his elderly mother, Annie. Diane brought Jack’s body back to the village and laid him to rest. She carried on being a mother figure to his offspring until her exit in 2021.

    6. Seth Armstrong and Betty Eagleton

Emmerdale golden couple Seth and Betty were childhood sweethearts who reconnected later in life.

In 1994, Betty arrived in the village in search of her old love. She had been widowed a few months earlier, and Seth was also on his own after the death of his wife, Meg. It was second time lucky for the pair, who threw a 1940s themed party for the locals in celebration of their love.

Betty wore the trousers in their relationship and was often telling Seth off for whatever mischievous thing he was getting up to. They almost split after Betty discovered Seth was broadcasting her daily routine to the village via a hidden webcam. But despite his cheeky ways, Seth was Betty’s rock and protector.

In 2003, the couple said goodbye to start a new life in Australia. Homesick Betty ended up returning home and Seth decided to fly back to his Betty. Sadly he died on the flight home, but Betty arranged for Seth’s body to be buried in the woods, just as he wanted.

Emmerdale greatest couples ranked: 7. Kim Tate and Dave Glover

Kim’s affair with farmhand Dave started out as lust, but he ended up being the love of her life.

The lady of the manor sought comfort in Dave’s hunky arms after her marriage to Frank hit the rocks. Dave was everything Frank wasn’t – young, energetic, exciting. The lovers couldn’t keep their hands off one another as they romped their way around the village.

It was a good few months before Frank realised what was going on. He busted their affair after planting hidden cameras in Dave’s cottage.

Things got even messier when Kim discovered she was pregnant. Frank offered her a million quid to dump Dave and name him as the father – which she did. Baby James was born and a DNA test confirmed he was Frank’s son.

Dave went on to marry Kathy Bates, but he and Kim couldn’t deny their true feelings. Realising they still loved one another, Kim and Dave made a plan to run away together with James. But tragically they never got that far.

On Christmas 1996, a fire broke out in the nursery of Home Farm and Dave was killed after rescuing James from the blaze.

    8. Andy and Katie Sugden

Childhood sweethearts Andy and Katie first met at Hotten Comprehensive and fell madly in love. At 16 the couple decided to try for a baby. Katie became pregnant, but heartbreak followed when she suffered a miscarriage.

After finishing his GCSEs, Andy went into farming, following in the Sugden family tradition. The demanding job meant long hours, and neglected Katie ended up seeking comfort in the arms of Andy’s brother, Robert. Katie and Robert’s steamy affair had viewers gripped as they waited to see which brother Katie would choose.

She went ahead with marrying Andy, but couldn’t resist Rob. When Andy discovered their betrayal he tried to murder his brother, and divorced Katie.

In the years that followed, Andy and Katie both remarried, but there was always a sense of unfinished business between them. In 2014, a decade after their first wedding, Andy and Katie said I do again. But the marriage lasted less than two months after Robert killed Katie to stop her outing his secret romance with Aaron.

Emmerdale greatest couples ranked: 9. Sam Dingle and Alice Dingle

It was love at first sight for Sam Dingle the day he met farmer’s daughter Alice Wilson. Both were the shy, nervous sorts, who lacked experience with the opposite sex, but they just clicked.

Early on in their relationship the couple relocated to Norfolk, where they ran a chicken farm together. But then Sam suddenly returned to the village  and stunned his family by revealing Alice was pregnant. The thought of becoming a father scared Sam, so Alice agreed to move back to Emmerdale so they could raise their baby with the help of the Dingles.

The couple’s happiness was shattered when Alice was diagnosed with cancer. She was advised to terminate her pregnancy to start chemotherapy, but she refused. Alice gave birth to a baby boy, who she and Sam named Samson. Alice then began treatment for her cancer and she and Sam married in a tearjerking ceremony.

Tragedy struck weeks later when Alice was told her chemo wasn’t working. Crippled with pain from her illness, she made a pact with Sam to help end her suffering.

Alice died on July 31, 2006 after Sam assisted in her suicide by giving her an overdose of morphine. She passed away shortly afterwards in his arms.

    10. Paddy Kirk and Chas Dingle

Chas has always had a weakness for bad boys, but changed type when she got together with dependable Paddy. A world away from her awful exes, Paddy treated Chas with love, care and respect. It’s just a shame she didn’t extend him the same courtesy.

First time round, Chas cheated on Paddy with Carl King and he threw her out. It was a good few years before Paddy agreed to give things another go, and fans really enjoyed their renewed romance.

The couple experienced tragedy in 2018 with the loss of their baby daughter Grace. Rainbow baby Eve arrived the year after, and on Christmas Day 2020 Chas and Paddy became husband and wife.

Viewers wanted them to stay together, but the Emmerdale writers had other ideas. Chas’s affair with nasty Al Chapman destroyed their marriage and pushed Paddy to the brink of suicide.

Paddy has since found happiness with new missus Mandy, while Chas might be about to get engaged to boyfriend, Liam Cavanagh. Her and Paddy remain friends and co-parents.

Charity and Cain Dingle nearly kiss in Emmerdale

Emmerdale greatest couples ranked: 11. Cain and Charity Dingle

It’s been a long time since Cain and Charity last romantic entanglement, but we couldn’t leave them off our list. Based on chemistry alone, they are one of the soap’s most iconic couples.

Emmerdale’s answer to Bonnie and Clyde have a long and complicated past, dating back to when they were underage teens. Charity got pregnant with daughter Debbie at 13, but she and Cain chose to give their daughter up for adoption.

When Debbie finally re-entered their lives 13 years later, Charity and Cain decided to try again. What followed was years of make ups and break ups. The lovers frequently fell out, but their passionate connection always drew them back together. In 2009 Cain decided he was ready to get married. He proposed to Charity and she accepted. But on the day of their wedding she decided she couldn’t go through with it.

The pair’s relationship finally fell apart after Cain bedded glamour puss Faye Lamb. Charity got her own by starting up with Jai Sharma.

Apart from their brief fling back in 2016, Charity and Cain have remained nothing more than partners in crime. But we still reckon there’s some unfinished business there.

    12. Marlon and Tricia Dingle

Marlon has been married five times, but many feel his first wife Tricia was ‘the one’.

The cute couple were love young’s dream and perfectly complimented one another. But that’s not to say they didn’t have their troubles. Early on in their romance, barmaid Tricia agreed to marry Joe Fisher so he could stay in the country with his boyfriend Jason Kirk. Marlon didn’t approve of the arrangement, so they broke up.

It wasn’t long before Tricia and Marlon were reunited – and engaged! They married in a surprise ceremony on Valentine’s Day 2003. But when Tricia temporarily moved to India to star in a Bollywood film, Marlon had a foolish one-night stand with his own cousin Charity.

When Tricia returned home and discovered Marlon’s betrayal she was heartbroken. She decided to leave him and the Dales, but changed her mind at the last minute after Marlon wrote her a list of all things he adored about her.

Deciding to give their marriage another chance, Tricia ran over to The Woolpack on New Year’s Eve 2004 to tell Marlon the good news. But tragedy struck when a huge storm hit the village and Tricia was crushed by the pub’s falling chimney.

She was rushed to hospital and spent several days on life-support, before Marlon made the devastating decision to switch the machine off.

On Christmas Day 2000, nearly 10 million tuned in to watch Ashley and Bernice tie the knot in a romantic ceremony. Their festive nuptials was one of the few Emmerdale weddings that actually went without a hitch.

Sadly the same couldn’t be said for Ashley and Bernice’s marriage. Only weeks after she pledged to remain faithful, Bernice began an affair with Spanish chef Carlos Diaz. She fell pregnant with baby Gabby and didn’t know who the father was.

A DNA test later confirmed Gabby was in fact Ashley’s, but there was no going back for the Thomas’s marriage. They split and Bernice fled the Dales shortly afterwards, leaving Ashley to raise Gabby on his own.

    14. Biff Fowler and Lady Tara Oakwell

Lady Tara was a proper posh bird. But that didn’t stop her lusting after a bit of rough.

Her passionate affair with Biff Fowler began after she employed him to be her personal chauffeur. After weeks of sneaking around the village together, Tara and Biff went public. But he then broke it off after finding out she’d evicted folk from their homes.

Tara went on the rebound with wealthy Lord Michael Thornfield, who was a chum of her late dad. He proposed and she accepted, but on the eve of their wedding Tara ended up back in bed with Biff. She asked if he’d be her bit on the side, but Biff wasn’t comfortable with that idea.

In the end, Tara broke Biff’s heart and married moneybags Michael. But she soon realised the grass wasn’t greener.

Emmerdale greatest couples ranked: 15. Jimmy and Nicola King

Our list wouldn’t be complete with Jimmy and Nicola. Unlike the rest of his brothers, Jimmy has been lucky enough to know the love of a good woman. But that’s not to say his marriage to Nicola hasn’t been without its challenges.

Things got off to a rocky start after Jimmy reckoned Nicola was only with him for his money. She then fell pregnant unexpectedly, but the birth of their daughter Angelica brought the couple closer together. They married and had a very short stint being landlord and landlady of The Woolpack.

In 2011, Jimmy was involved in a road accident and suffered amnesia as a result. He was tricked into an affair with Kelly Windsor and fathered her son, Elliot. Jimmy also had another son – Carl Jr – three years later after a mix-up with a fertility clinic. Nicola was rocked by both Elliot and Carl’s arrivals, but has helped Jimmy raise the lads, even coming to think of them as her own.

Last year the couple faced their toughest test to date after Angelica was imprisoned for causing the car accident which killed Heath Hope. As well as having to cope with Angel being banged up, Jimmy and Nicola discovered they’d been harbouring an abuser when Tom King showed his true colours.

  • Classic Emmerdale to air one of soap’s saddest ever deaths today – and we’ve got all the tissues ready

Classic Emmerdale to air one of soap’s saddest ever deaths today – and we’ve got all the tissues ready

Alice Dingle takes her last breaths in Classic Emmerdale today, in what is one of soap’s saddest ever deaths.

When the episode was aired originally, back in the summer of 2006, it was quite controversial.

Here’s everything you need to know about Alice’s tragic death.

    Sam with Alice and Samson
Sam agreed to help Alice die (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)

How did Alice die in Classic Emmerdale?

Alice was diagnosed with cancer shortly after finding out she was pregnant. The doctors advised her to terminate her pregnancy so she could start treatment, but Alice refused.

Instead, she waiting to start her chemotherapy until she had given birth to baby Samson in January 2006.

But by then the cancer was too advanced and Alice went downhill. As her suffering increased, she made the decision to end her own life.

With no treatment left that could cure her, Alice  came home to die – sleeping in the Dingles’ lounge with her family around her. But she could no longer walk, or go outside, and so she asked Sam to speed up her death.

Sam and Alice on her last day
Sam took Alice outside for one last time, then he helped her die (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)

    Did Sam kill Alice?

Sam wasn’t in favour of helping Alice to die at first. He told Alice he couldn’t kill the person he loved more than anything else in the world.

But after a chat with Marlon – who’d lost his wife Tricia a few years before – Sam decided he would do as Alice asked.

Newcomer Eli Dingle got the drugs Sam needed, at Marlon’s request, and Sam helped Alice to end it all.

Alice slipped away in Sam’s arms, with little Samson beside her.

Sam told Zak and Lydia he killed Alice

    Sam arrested

Sam was briefly arrested for helping his wife die. But in typical Dingle fashion the family all stood together and each confessed to the crime. Eventually it was Cain who took the blame in order to stop social services stepping in and taking baby Samson away from his dad.

Was the Classic Emmerdale storyline controversial?

At the time, there had only been on other assisted death in soap. When Ethel Skinner was diagnosed with terminal cancer, in EastEnders, she asked her friend Dot Cotton to help her die.

Alice’s story, especially her being a young mum, was more controversial and it was debated in the media. But it proved a hit with fans and Ursula Holden Gill, who played Alice, was nominated for the Best Actress award at the 2007 British Soap Awards.

Since then there have been more assisted dying stories in soap. Hayley Cropper took her own life with the help of husband Roy in Coronation Street, and Aaron Dingle helped his boyfriend Jackson Walsh to die. Faith Dingle also ended her life by stockpiling her medication.

The storylines are always controversial, and very emotional! We’re still sobbing over Alice’s tragic death.

Sam Dingle character change spotted by fans – and they’re here for it

It’s been a big year for the Dingles, and with it, Emmerdale fans have noticed a change in Sam Dingle – and they’re here for it.

The last few months alone have seen Sam come to terms with his son being sent to prison, the revelation that his sister has been abused by her husband and his dad’s death.

Fans believe that these big events have seen Sam become more emotionally intelligent.

    Sam’s big year

Following on from 2023, which saw Sam’s wife Lydia assaulted by her childhood friend Craig, things continued to be tough for Sam. Earlier this year, Sam’s son Samson teamed up with local thug Josh Cope. They carried out a robbery at The Hide. Unfortunately, waiter Matty Barton was there and a scuffle broke out. Samson ended up being stabbed and then lied to the police that Matty had stabbed him on purpose.

Matty was jailed, but Samson eventually admitted the truth. He was then sentenced to four years in prison. The whole situation took its toll on Sam, who was heartbroken to lose his son.

Then came Belle’s revelation that husband Tom had been emotionally and physically abusing her for the past year. Sam was furious that anyone would hurt his little sister.

More bad news came last month with Zak Dingle‘s death. Sam and Cain travelled to Scotland together to retrieve Zak’s body and bring him home to Emmerdale. Sam, Cain and Belle then came together to give Zak the perfect Dingle farewell.

Emmerdale fans praise Sam Dingle character change

Throughout Sam’s tough time, fans have noticed how well Sam has dealt with everything and have commented that he appears more mature.

Taking to Reddit, one fan wrote: “Sam has always been made out to be not very bright and pretty useless but recently his character is changing for the better. Now he is often the voice of reason and keeps his head when others are losing theirs.

“For example he was at the hospital trying to support Cain and talking sense into him. Another one was when he was telling Cain and others not to go all guns blazing punching Tom because it wouldn’t help Belle’s situation.”

They added: “He was great with Lydia after her attack and does his duty towards Amelia and the baby. I think he is finally coming into his own and showing some leadership and good qualities. He’s always played second fiddle to Cain but he’s showing some strength of character now.”

Others agreed, with another viewer writing: “I love Sam at the moment, he’s like the real head of the family, think Lydia has brought the best out in him,” while a third fan commented that Sam is “emotionally intelligent.”

During Friday’s episode, Tom snapped at Amelia. He accused her of acting like a “hooker” and told her to have some respect for herself.

Nicola arrived back just in time to see Amelia run out in tears. Nicola, who was already suspicious of Tom, warned that she’d tell Jimmy. But tonight, Tom attempts damage limitation.

As Tom and Amelia arrive together at the cafe, Nicola is not convinced by their show of unity. Later, Tom suggests to Amelia that the two of them should move away together and get away from everyone.

    3. Kim is impatient

Last week, Kim ordered Ross Barton to run her estranged husband Will out of the village. But it went wrong and a fight broke out between Ross and Will.

Will ended up stumbling and hit his head on a rock, leaving Ross to wonder if he had killed Will.

Tonight, Kim is feeling impatient as she waits for news on Will. Has Will survived? And what will he do if he has?

  • All the Dingles who have spent time inside and the reasons for it

All the Dingles who have spent time inside and the reasons for it

The Dingles have been part of the Emmerdale furniture for 30 years and are one of TV’s most iconic families. But it’s fair to say, they’re not the best behaved bunch, with many serving time in prison.

Following on from Tom King‘s snide comment that prison is a ‘rite of passage for the Dingle men,’ we take a look back at all the Dingles who have spent time behind bars.

Emmerdale Dingles in prison: Cain Dingle

Resident bad boy Cain has spent less time in jail than he perhaps should have.

However, he has served jail time. Most recently, he spent time behind bars for a crime he didn’t even commit. After son Kyle shot Al Chapman, Cain decided to take the rapt.

Cain admitted that the thought of doing 20 years in prison was killing him. Fortunately, Kyle decided to come clean and all charges were eventually dropped.

    Sam Dingle

When he arrived in the Dales, Sam Dingle had just been released from a young offenders institute. He obviously hadn’t learnt his lesson though as he continued to get involved in his family’s dodgy schemes.

One such scheme saw him take part in an armed robbery with his uncle Albert in 1998. They were caught and served time in prison. Sam was released after two years.

However, that wasn’t the only time he spent time in jail. He served another short stint behind bars for accidentally knocking over Edna Birch in 2004.

    Charity Dingle

Charity has been in prison on more than one occasion. In 2004, she was sentenced to life in prison after Zoe Tate testified in court that Charity had killed Chris Tate.

The truth was that Chris had ended his own life. After Charity gave birth to Chris’s baby while behind bars, Zoe struck a deal with her – she wanted custody of Noah in return for handing the police evidence that Chris ended his own life.

Charity was acquitted and released from jail and was eventually reunited with her son.

In 2015, to fit in with Emma Atkins’ maternity leave, Charity was sent to prison for two years for perverting the course of justice. She was released just over a year later.

Emmerdale Dingles in prison: Marlon Dingle

In 2020, poor Marlon was arrested and charged for the murder of Graham Foster.

Eventually, Marlon was made a free man as the truth came out about who really killed Graham – Pierce Harris.

    Lisa Dingle

One Dingle you wouldn’t expect to have served time in prison is devoted mum and wife Lisa.

But back in 2010 she was arrested for punching a policeman and was sentenced to three months imprisonment.

    Belle Dingle sent to prison

Zak and Lisa’s daughter Belle famously ended up behind bars after accidentally killing her best friend, Gemma Andrews.

Belle and Gemma had been involved in an argument over a boy they both liked. After Gemma slapped Belle, Belle retaliated by pushing Gemma to the ground. Gemma hit her head on a rock and later died from the injuries.

Belle was remorseful for her actions and won an appeal reducing her sentence from three years to just one.

Emmerdale Dingles in prison: Aaron Dingle

Another member of the Dingle family who has often flirted on the wrong side of the law is Aaron. He was eventually sentenced to 1 year in prison in 2017 for the brutal attack on Kasim Sabet.

He struggled behind bars and one particular scene where Aaron faced homophobia from fellow inmates sparked hundreds of complaints from viewers.

Aaron was released after just a few months but he struggled with his demons following the violent and psychological abuse he suffered while inside.

    Noah Dingle

Back in 2022, Noah was sentenced to three months in jail for stalking and spying on ex-girlfriend Chloe Harris.

Noah installed a tracker onto Chloe’s phone, installed microphones in her house and used a drone to spy on her while she was sleeping.

He served around half his time before being released for good behaviour. Upon his release, he shunned his mum Charity due to her being the one to report him to the police – which is usually a big Dingle no no.

    Samson Dingle currently in prison

Sam’s son Samson is currently behind bars after he was sentenced to four years earlier in 2024.

Samson made the mistake of teaming up with local thug Josh Cope. The pair of them carried out a robbery at The Hide. Samson ended up being accidentally stabbed in the scuffle, but lied that waiter Matty Barton had done it on purpose.

Matty was subsequently jailed for the crime, before Samson eventually came clean and faced the music.

    Other Dingles who have misbehaved

Debbie Dingle has come close to jail on numerous occasions. She was originally arrested over the murder of Shane Doyle, before Jasmine Thomas handed herself in. In 2018, Debbie was arrested again for her part in the acid attack that scarred Ross Barton, but she was found not guilty in court.

Earlier this year, Tina Dingle returned to the Dales for the first time in nearly 30 years. It was soon revealed that she was wearing an ankle tag, meaning she’d recently been released from prison. Though it’s unknown for what.

Back in the 1970s, Cain, Caleb and Chas’s mum Faith Dingle served a short stint behind bars and actually gave birth to son Caleb while in prison.

Alice recently made the decision to stop undergoing chemo for her cancer. And, as she and Sam prepare to become man and wife, they make a brave decision about their future together.

Meanwhile, Debbie and Jasmine grow closer in the aftermath of the fire – to Ashley’s ire. And, with the house sale in doubt, Matthew and Sadie decide to make a deal with Jimmy.

These episodes originally aired on April 23 and 24, 2006.

Classic Emmerdale spoilers: Alice and Sam tie the knot

At Alice’s hen night, the girls are enjoying a round of shots when a stripper arrives. Alice is shocked, but Chas and Del take her under their wing. She grows upset when she realises that Del has told Chas that the cancer is terminal – but decides to enjoy her night regardless.

The next day, Tom drives Alice to the church, where Zak walks her down the aisle. In a private moment after the ceremony, Sam maturely comes to terms with the fact that Alice is going to give up chemo. The pair decide to treasure what time they have left together as man and wife.

    Debbie and Jasmine grow closer

After learning that the fire was started by a bottle of vodka, Debbie takes the blame to protect Daz. After leaving the hospital, Debbie argues with Cain and storms out in search of Jasmine.

Ashley tries to keep the pair apart, but Jasmine runs into Debbie’s arms – telling her how much she misses her. When Ashley arrives, he tells Jack that Debbie has admitted to starting the fire. Remembering Daz’s confession, Jack is confused. Later, a grateful Daz asks Debbie why they protected him.

The next day, at a fairground, Cain watches Debbie and Jasmine together. He blows Jasmine a kiss, which creeps her out – causing her to cling closer to Debbie.

Finances are dire for the Kings

Worried about the business’s opposition, Jimmy realises that he may need to pay over the odds to secure a haulage deal. Matthew tells Sadie that they can’t sell the house as quickly as they wanted to.

Realising that their only option to save the haulage yard is to sell their shares, they reluctantly go to see Jimmy.

Martin rushes to catch out the Kings in Classic Emmerdale spoilers

Jimmy invites Ion, one of the Kings’ new builders out to The Woolpack for a drink to congratulate the workforce on their hard work. Overhearing Ion’s foreign accent, Martin and Louise wonder what the Kings are up to.

As she collects glasses in the bar, Louise quizzes Ion. Looking on, Jimmy warns Ion that Louise’s boyfriend is a police officer. His shocked reaction confirms the worst to Jimmy – that Ion and his new builders are working in the country illegally.

Later, Jimmy catches Jimmy trying to hire new labour. Figuring out what’s happened, he tells Jimmy to clear the building site immediately.

Soon afterwards, Martin visits Jimmy and Matthew with questions about Ion. However, his investigation is too late – the Kings have fired Ion and destroyed the evidence.

Later, Louise realises that she must have inadvertently tipped the Kings off to Martin’s investigation. Figuring out that it must have been Louise, he subtly threatens her in the pub.

Sadie and her mother in law exchange a glare

Speak now or forever hold your peace

Later, Tom gives some post to Matthew. Opening it, he is shocked to see that it’s an invite from Sadie to her wedding – the very next day. Saying nothing to Tom or Jimmy, he throws the invitation in the fire.

The next day, Matthew is brooding over Sadie’s invitation when he’s interrupted by Tom. Later, at Pear Tree Cottage, he finds himself unable to concentrate on work.

Meanwhile, Sadie prepares for her wedding in a hotel room. Future mother-in-law Rosemary Sinclair helps her into her wedding gown, sarcastically noting that it’s a shame none of her family are able to attend. When she attempts to bribe Sadie out of the marriage, Sadie turns her down.

Elsewhere, Tom organises a clay pigeon shoot. He insists that his sons join in – as he’s invited Helen and her daughter Grace, with whom he’s trying to set Matthew up. But Matthew has made a decision of his own – and grabs his car keys.

Joining the crowd at Home Farm, he’s given food for thought by Grace. Realising that life is too short, he rushes to the door, telling them all that he’s off to stop a wedding.

Tom, Carl and Jimmy all try to stop him, and are stunned when Matthew tells them that Sadie is getting married today. Tom tells him that if she gets back together with Sadie he’ll be voted off the board and lose control of the firm.

He’s shocked when Matthew walks away anyway. Determined not to lose his son, Tom follows.

Meanwhile, as Carl and Jimmy try to figure out where Matthew’s gone, Edna, Betty and Laurel arrive with the invite that they found in the fireplace.

Will Matthew get to the church on time?

Andy burns his bridges with Daz

Jack tells Diane that he and Daz are going to see Andy. At Butler’s farm, Jack reminds Andy that he has a responsibility to Daz.

Andy promises to take care of Daz, but won’t be forced to choose between him and Katie. He stresses that it’s Katie who needs him now.

As Daz storms off upstairs, Jack tells Andy that Daz can stay with him for a while. Andy remains firm that he’s doing the right thing by Katie.

With Andy’s support, Katie prepares for her father’s funeral. Breaking down, she fears that she can’t go through with it. Andy promises to be there for as long as she needs him.

Jasmine’s a shoulder to cry on

After Debbie is rejected by Ivan, Jasmine reassures her that neither of them needs a man when they have each other.

Seeing the pair hugging, Ashley is worried.  The next day, with Debbie angry at seeing Andy and Katie together, Jasmine tries to comfort her.

As Debbie breaks down, Jasmine holds her friend in a close embrace. Later on, Ashley finds the girls asleep on the bed together. He grows even more concerned when he sees Debbie’s arm around Jasmine.

    Alice sets a date

Alice tells Sam that she wants to get married now they’ve got to grips with settling Samson in. However, he’s not too convinced.

Later, Alice and Lisa visit Ashley in the hope of getting a quick date for the wedding. Spotting an advert in the local paper, she strikes on an idea to hold a reception in April.

At home, the Dingles help Sam warm to the idea. As Del measures Alice up for the dress, she comments on how quickly she lost her baby fat. Realising what she’s said, mortified Del apologises. Alice makes a joke, quietly despairing over how her cancer casts a black cloud over everything.

  • What happened in Emmerdale tonight: A perfect end to Zak’s farewell as Sam, Cain and Belle paid a final tribute

What happened in Emmerdale tonight: A perfect end to Zak’s farewell as Sam, Cain and Belle paid a final tribute

Emmerdale tonight was the last farewell to Zak Dingle as Cain, Sam and Belle reminisced over their dad in a near-perfect three-hander episode (with a bit of Lydia thrown in!).

Each Dingle sibling had their issues to air and each needed reassurance from their relatives. But with flashbacks to scenes featuring Steve Halliwell, it felt like a fitting end to the week’s episodes.

Here’s a rundown of Emmerdale tonight, Friday October 18.

Cain is scared of living up to Zak's name (Credit: ITV)

    Cain confessed

As the revelries continued in the Woolpack, Cain returned to Wishing Well to find Sam and Belle waiting to get through to him. Cain made to leave, but Belle locked them all in. Sam then pulled a bottle of whiskey out of Zak’s secret stash and their evening began.

The three siblings talked and reminisced and Sam said Zak saw Cain as head of the family. Cain insisted it was rubbish and didn’t mean anything. He declared he couldn’t do it and confided Moira had cancelled her operation because she knew he couldn’t cope.

Sam then gave his brother a hug, which Cain did not take too well and called him a fat egg! That Dingle charm, eh?!

Cain said he knows he can’t cope when things get real – he runs or lashes out. But Sam and Belle insisted Cain was the man for the job – Zak knew it, they all knew it.

Sam was sad in Emmerdale tonight

It was Sam’s turn to lament his failures next. He felt he had let Lydia and Samson down and he was a joke. He was sure Zak could have handled it all better than him.

But Cain insisted they couldn’t sit there and pretend Zak could do no wrong. He referenced the time Zak had almost killed him and Belle lost it at Cain for ruining their dad’s memory.

But Cain told how he had forgiven Zak because he knew how sorry he was. He said Zak didn’t always have the answers, but he never stopped trying – and Sam was just like him, a great dad. Belle soon forgave Cain and all was okay again. Phew.

    Belle’s fears

Belle also worried about what Zak would have thought about her not getting away from Tom sooner, but Cain assured her Zak thought she was the strongest person he knew.

Then a rendition of the absolute banger Hillbilly Rock will have put a smile on fans’ faces after many felt it was missing from Zak’s send-off episode last night.

Cain eventually read out the speech that he had been unable to give at the graveside due to being overwhelmed by his grief. And in amidst it we were treated to old footage of Zak – when Cain discovered he was his dad, offering comfort to Sam and arguing with teenage Belle. There were also more jovial clips of him with the family, smiling, laughing, joking and of course, fighting – the true Dingle way! Zak was even heard talking about love.

A final decision in Emmerdale tonight

All three of them woke up on the sofa having fallen asleep, with Cain in Zak’s chair – symbolising, perhaps, he had taken up his place as head of the family.

Sam certainly believed so as when they then went to Zak’s grave, Sam placed Zak’s hat on Cain’s head. But Cain took it off (although he plans to keep it!) and decided the three of them should split the head of the family role. Because no one person can ever replace Zak Dingle.
