  • Dawn Woods in Emmerdale: Marriage to Terry, romance with Scott and tragic death

Dawn Woods in Emmerdale: Marriage to Terry, romance with Scott and tragic death

Dawn Woods shocked her father Bob when she arrived in Emmerdale in 2003 and announced she was engaged to the much older Terry.

She stayed in the village for three years before meeting a tragic end in 2006. With her final weeks currently playing out on Classic Emmerdale, we take a look at Dawn’s time in the Dales.

    Dawn’s marriage to Terry

Dawn arrived in Emmerdale as the fiancée of Terry Woods after they had met on holiday in Spain. It was then revealed that she was the daughter of Bob Hope. Bob had left her, her mum Jean and brother Jamie when she was just 4 years old.

Despite’s Bob’s reservations over the 27-year age gap, Dawn and Terry got married in March 2003, a month after her arrival. They went on to have son TJ (Terry Junior) together. But shortly after TJ’s birth, Terry a stroke. Struggling to cope with a baby and an ill husband, Dawn ended the marriage.

When Dawn’s mum arrived to support her through the split, she took a liking to Terry and made a move on him. After being rejected, she encouraged her daughter to go for sole custody of TJ. Dawn agreed, arguing that due to his stroke, Terry often got tired and was a possible risk to TJ.

Emmerdale Dawn Woods: Relationship with her stepbrother

Dawn started seeing her stepbrother Scott Windsor, which gained more disapproval from Bob – who was married to Scott’s mum Viv. The couple soon moved in together, but Dawn was devastated when Scott left her. Zoe Tate was planning to move to America with her and Scott’s daughter Jean, and had invited Scott to go with them.

Scott sent Dawn a letter telling her that it was best if they split as people thought their relationship was weird and he had convinced himself that he didn’t love her. Not wanting to see Scott or Zoe before they left for the US, Dawn legged it to Spain to stay with her mum.

However, Scott never made it to America. Zoe discovered that he and his mum were plotting to take Jean. A fight occurred and Zoe stabbed Scott with a syringe full of ketamine. Dawn flew home just as Scott woke up in hospital and initially forgave him. But after she discovered he’d been blackmailing Paddy to be a witness against Zoe at trial, his true colours was shown to Dawn.

Scott later punched Dawn by mistake while attacking Paddy and he was arrested for assault. Realising that Scott might be capable of rape as Zoe claimed, Dawn ended their relationship for good.

    Time in prison

After his release from prison, Scott decided to get revenge on Dawn by reporting Dawn for benefit fraud. She’d been doing odd jobs to support TJ and make ends meet.

Dawn was sentenced to 6 weeks in prison, although she only served 3 weeks. Upon her release, she was shocked to discover that her mum and Terry were now in a relationship. When they refused to end their relationship, Dawn reminded Terry that her mum was the reason she went for sole custody of their son.

Dawn banned both Terry and her mum from seeing TJ and took him away to Cornwall.

    Dawn’s tragic death

When Dawn returned to Emmerdale, she informed everyone that she had met someone and would be moving there permanently. Terry begged her to change her mind, but she refused.

On the day of her planned departure, Dawn allowed Terry to spend the day with TJ, but he was late returning TJ, resulting in them missing the flight.

Wanting something to do to pass the time, Dawn went with Marlon and Donna to visit their new house at the King’s River Showhome. However, a sabotage of the plot had been arranged by Sadie King and when the boiler room door was opened, the whole place exploded.

At first it appeared that Dawn was fine, with her injuries seeming minor. Doctors planned to observe her and then release her. But things took a turn and Bob returned from getting a coffee to see his daughter being rushed into emergency theatre. He was later told that she passed away from internal injuries.

    Who played Dawn Woods?

Dawn was played by Julia Mallam. Before starring in Emmerdale, Julia had appeared in Fat Friends and Peak Practice.

After leaving Emmerdale, she starred in 50 episodes of children’s TV show Captain Mack. She also popped up in The Bill, Casualty and Doctors, although hasn’t appeared on TV since 2012.

Viv Hope: Marriage to Bob, fiery death and actress Deena Payne’s ‘deep hurt’ over exit

Emmerdale Post Mistress and resident gossip Viv Hope has long-since been remembered by fans despite her untimely demise in a fire. In fact, her legs still feature in the opening credits 13 years after she died!

As she takes centre stage with her double wedding in Classic episodes currently, here’s the lowdown on Viv.

Viv and Vic Windsor in Emmerdale

Iconic Viv Windsor arrived in what was then Beckindale in 1993. She and her husband Vic, plus her son Scott, his daughter Kelly and their daughter together, Donna, bought the Post Office after deciding to leave London due to increasing crime rates.

Not long after the family moved, Viv’s ex-husband, Reg Dawson, father of Scott, turned up having been released from prison. He immediately took Viv and a woman called Shirley Turner hostage. He tried to shoot Viv, but Shirley was hit and killed instead. Reg was then shot by police and he died. He left £30k to Viv in his will as long as she divorced Vic, but she turned the money down and stayed with her husband.

Viv and Vic did split up for a while in 1995 when she had an affair with Terry Woods, but she went back to him for the sake of the kids. Things eventually got better for Viv and Vic, but then tragedy struck. He was shot and killed during a robbery at the Post Office on Christmas Day, 1998.

    Viv and Bob Hope

After a turbulent few years, during which she fell out with stepdaughter Kelly and son Scott, Viv was swept off her feet by Bob Hope, a tights salesman in 2000! He very quickly moved in with her and they married in 2001.

However, they were rocked by the revelation Bob had another wife, Barbara. They got past it, but cracks were starting to show and they eventually divorced. She moved on, seducing Paddy Kirk, which resulted in the end of his marriage to Emily.

Depressed Viv was lonely and really struggled when Scott was injured by Zoe Tate. But she and Bob finally got back together and she started planning their second wedding. It was set to be a double wedding with daughter Donna and her fiancé Marlon Dingle.

Bob wanted all of his children to attend the wedding and Viv contacted them. She became upset to discover he had kids with all of his ex-wives, but not her. He disappointed Viv when he told her kids were off the cards due to his vasectomy.

But the night before the wedding, he had the op reversed and spent the night in a hotel. Viv had no idea and when he didn’t turn up, assumed he’d jilted her. In fact, ex-wife Jean had taken him hostage in the hotel room and was begging him to get back with her. Bob managed to get away and he and Viv married for a second time.

Bob’s daughter Dawn was then killed in an explosion at a show home, thanks to the Kings. On the day of her funeral, Viv discovered she was pregnant with twins Cathy and Heath, who arrived on February 9, 2007.

    Prison for Viv in Emmerdale

After she began raising money for children’s charities, Viv got into a trouble when she gave the money to a man named Freddy Yorke who took it and ran away. When Viv admitted she was moving money around she ended up implicating herself. She was charged with conspiracy to defraud.

Although she attempted to clear her name, Freddy threatened her children’s lives and then planted stolen money on her, which only served to make matters worse. Viv pleaded guilty and was sentenced to three years in prison.

She refused to let Bob visit, but determined to stand by his wife, Bob devised several plans to get into the prison. Viv eventually wrote to him in 2009 and asked him to come and see her, but he felt things were over, so decided to have sex with Gennie Walker instead!

It turned out Viv was actually being released and when she turned up in the village the next day, Brenda mistook her for a thief! Brenda was now co-owner of the business, which Viv struggled with and they clashed a lot.

The death of Viv in Emmerdale

When Viv then found out about Bob’s fling with Gennie, she called time on their marriage. However, it soon became clear she hoped the split wasn’t permanent. She began faking burglaries to play the damsel in distress and get Bob’s help and also tried to make him jealous. Eventually former lover Terry advised her to move on and she did try.

Terry supported her, but she mistook his kindness for something more and made a move. He gently knocked her back, insisting he was now with Brenda.

One more rejection hit Viv hard and she drunk a bottle of wine before passing out on the sofa. But a fire had been started at neighbouring Victoria Cottage and it soon spread to the shop. Terry broke in to rescue her and the twins. Bob got Heath and Cathy to safety, while Terry tried to get Viv.

However the Post Office exploded and Terry and Viv were both killed. Viv’s funeral was then held in her hometown of Essex, off screen.

Deena Payne and the controversy surrounding Viv’s exit

Viv was played by actress Deena Payne for 18 years, which made her one of the longest-serving show characters. Although she has admitted she was ready to leave as Viv, Deena has been very open about her disappointment over the way things were handled.

She gave an interview to the Distinct Nostalgia podcast in 2022 and explained: “18 years was enough. It was at a time when I wasn’t quite sure. If they tempted me to stay, I would’ve stayed and I would have preferred to have given in my notice. I was bitterly disappointed with the storyline exit I had as well after all the years I had been in.”

She went on to say: “I was hurt quite deeply and I did enjoy playing the character. I still miss that, absolutely, it did hurt, that’s for sure because it was a life and a person I had been playing for 18 years.”

Deena also spoke out about the storyline and how she didn’t want her character to die. “I not only didn’t have a storyline building up to it, but I also didn’t even have a grave in Emmerdale.

“They just sent my bits down south and I didn’t have any family left there so I did feel all of a sudden gone.

“And yes, in an ideal world it would have been fantastic to keep coming back in and muddying the waters and upsetting everybody and then back out as if nothing had happened.”

What is Deena Payne doing now?

Following her Emmerdale demise, Deena went back to the theatre. She has appeared on stage in Calendar Girls as well as in several pantomimes.

She has done some more TV, including True Crime and Doctors. It’s also reported she runs a dance school.

Scott Windsor: his tangled love life and very bad life choices!

Scott Windsor is out of prison in Classic Emmerdale, and vowing he’s turned over a new leaf! But is the bad boy of Emmerdale really a reformed character? Hmm…

In the meantime, we thought it was time for a quick recap of Scott Windsor in Emmerdale’s rollercoaster life in the village, his complicated family tree, and his very rocky love life!

The Windsors arrive'<br />LtoR Scott Windsor [Toby Cockrell], Viv Windsor [Deena Payne], Kelly Windsor [Adele Silva], Vic Windsor [Alun Lewis]<br /

    Scott Windsor in Emmerdale

Young Scott Windsor arrived in Emmerdale in 1993, with his family – mum Viv, stepdad Vic, stepsister Kelly, and half-sister Donna.

But bad luck followed and first Scott was traumatised by the plane crash late in 1993, and by the reappearance of his dad Reg. Reg took Viv hostage and was shot by the police.

After that drama, Scott fell in with a bad crowd, and eventually left the village to join the army.

    Return to the village

When Scott came back to Emmerdale in 1998, he fell in love with his stepsister, Kelly.

She was engaged to Roy Glover and even tried to take her own life after the stress of her affair and discovering she was pregnant proved too much.

    Chloe and Scott in Emmerdale

    Scott, Chloe and Zoe

Scott began dating Chloe Atkinson and they moved in together. But as it turned out, Scott had a one-night stand with Zoe Tate. Zoe had been suffering from schizophrenia at the time and couldn’t remember their liaison. So when she found out she was pregnant, it was surprise!

To everyone’s shock, Scott was accused of rape, because Zoe was a lesbian, but the police dropped the charges. Zoe’s brother, Chris Tate, launched a hate campaign against Scott. He even paid someone to sleep with him and then accuse him of rape.

Zoe managed to get the charges against Scott dropped, on condition he signed away his rights to access to baby Jean.

But after Chris’s death, they decided to make the effort to be co-parents.

    Scott and Dawn

Continuing a trend, Scott fell for his new stepsister, Dawn Woods. She left her husband for him. But after getting into a fight, Scott split up with Dawn, though they later got back together.

    Kidnap!

Meanwhile, Scott was worried about Zoe’s plans to leave for New Zealand with Jean. Things got very nasty and Zoe ended up attacking Scott. She was charged with attempted murder but the case collapsed.

Struggling to cope, Scott kidnapped Zoe, her nephew Joseph and little Jean. Luckily his mum Viv talked him round but Scott was sent to jail – and Zoe went to New Zealand.

    Get out of jail

When Scott was released, he was upset to find Dawn was dating Danny Daggert.

He tried to win Dawn back but she turned him down. So, vengeful Scott reported Dawn for benefit fraud and she was sent to jail. When Dawn was killed shortly after her release, Scott felt guilty.

His last hurrah in the village was a short-lived romance with his teen apprentice Debbie Dingle. They teamed up on Rodney Blackstock and were humiliated when he turned the tables.

Scott Windsor left Emmerdale in 2007.

    Who played Scott Windsor?

Teenager Scott was played by Toby Cockerell when he first came to the village.

After he left and returned, the role was recast and Ben Freeman took the part of Scott Windsor.

Ben’s off-screen life was almost as dramatic as his alter ego’s life in Emmerdale.

His relationship with Amy Nuttall, who played Chloe, put them in the pages of the gossip mags. And in 2007, he was accused of rape. Ben was cleared of the charges but didn’t return to Emmerdale. Instead he concentrated on his musical theatre career

In 2021, he appeared in EastEnders as drug dealer Caleb Malone.
