  • Missing Emmerdale relatives: Bob’s kids and a mystery Dingle – everyone we’d love to meet

Missing Emmerdale relatives: Bob’s kids and a mystery Dingle – everyone we’d love to meet

There’s not much we love more than meeting new Emmerdale relatives!

Since mysterious manny Nicky arrived, we’ve met his mum and dad, Ruby Fox-Miligan and Caleb Miligan, and now his sister Steph and grandfather Anthony.

We’ve lost track of all the Dingles we’ve met over the years, not to mention surprises like finding out Harriet was Dawn’s stepmum, or Charles had a thing with Manpreet.

But there are a few Emmerdale family members who we think are missing. Some we’ve met briefly. Some we’ve never seen. And some are people we’d love to meet because we’ve heard lots about them, or sometimes because we’ve heard nothing at all and that always intrigues us!

Here are some of the missing Emmerdale family members we’d love to meet!

Maureen slaps Carlos at Nicola's wedding
Carlos deserved a slap (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)

    Maureen Blackstock – Nicola’s mum

Nicola King has been in Emmerdale – on and off – since 2001. We know her dad, Rodney, her half-sister Bernice, and Bernice’s mum, Diane.

Back in the noughties, we knew Nicola’s half-brother Paul, too. And his mum – Diane’s sister – Val. But we’ve only met Nicola’s mum very briefly.

Maureen Blackstock came to the village for Nicola’s wedding to Carlos Diaz. Except, the wedding didn’t happen, because Nicola found out that her sister Bernice had been sleeping with Carlos, while Carlos found out Nicola had been lying about being pregnant. What a muddle, eh?

Anyway, in all the drama, Maureen punched Carlos, and argued with Diane, then she left, never to be seen again.

She’s definitely long overdue a return to the village.

Chas speaks to Anya and Thomas
We’d love to meet Anya now she’s grown up (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)

Emmerdale relatives: Anya King – Tom’s sister

Back when Carl King Snr was alive and kicking and causing havoc in the Dales, he often took care of his young children – Thomas (now evil abuser Tom) and Anya. The pair got up to all sorts in the village in their short visits.

Though Thomas returned firstly to stalk Chas, who he thought had killed Carl, and then again in 2023, Anya’s not been seen since she left the village with her brother after Carl’s funeral in 2012.

We’d love to see her again and find out whether she’s as manipulative as her brother, or if she’s one of the good Kings!

    Bob and Roxy
Could Roxy ditch America for Yorkshire? Course she could (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)

    All the Hope offspring

Bob Hope has LOADS of kids. Hundreds of them. Well, perhaps not hundreds but there are a lot and we’d love to catch up with them.

Right, pay attention – because there’s a lot to say. Bob had two children with his first wife, Jean. We met both Dawn and Jamie for quite a while back in the early 2000s.

Dawn was tragically killed in the King’s River explosion, while Jamie left to live in Cornwall. He’s never been back, even when his half-brother Heath died.

Josh and Carly were Bob’s kids to his second wife, Barbara. They both came to the village for Bob’s wedding to Viv in 2006. But though Carly has returned and left again since, Josh has apparently moved to Australia.

Roxy Lockhart is Bob’s daughter with third wife Vonda. Bob didn’t know Roxy existed until his wedding to Viv.

She came to the village very briefly back then but only appeared in a few episodes before returning to America with her mum. We’ve got to be honest, she’s the one we’d love to see more of!

It feels such a waste for Bob to have all those children out there – not to mention his stepkids Kelly and Scott, and grandson TJ – and for them never to be seen! The campaign for more Hopes in the village starts here!

    30 years of the Dingles
    Who’s missing? (Credit: ITV)

Emmerdale relatives: Nathan Dingle – Zak’s oldest son

Nathan Dingle is an enigma, wrapped in a mystery, wrapped in a puzzle. Because we’ve never met him. He’s never mentioned. But he exists. We think.

Back when the Dingles were first seen on screen – 30 years ago – there were parents Zak and Nellie, and their grown-up (ish!) children, Butch, Ben, Sam and Tina.

But there was another sibling – Nathan. Tina talked about him in the 90s, when she revealed she had a brother who’d left Emmerdale when he got married because he was ashamed of his family. She said he was stuck up and no one had heard from him since he’d gone.

Since then, though, Nathan’s not really been mentioned. In fact, we’re wondering if the Emmerdale bosses have decided he’s a Dingle we don’t need. At Butch’s funeral, Zak said Sam was his only surviving son – that was before he knew Cain was his of course.

Confusingly, as recently as 2018, Zak mentioned raising six kids, which could mean Cain – though he didn’t raise him – or Nathan. But there was no mention of this missing Dingle when Zak died just a few weeks ago.

So we’re left scratching our heads as to whether he’s a missing Dingle or just a brief blip! And while we’re very aware there are probably enough Dingles in Emmerdale as it is, we’re also quite keen to meet this Nathan!

What happened in Emmerdale tonight: Zak was laid to rest and there’s a new (old) Dingle in town

Emmerdale tonight said a final farewell to the legendary Zak Dingle as he was laid to rest at home. But things were fraught as Cain spiralled and Belle struggled. Not to mention Tina Dingle turning up wanting her cut of the will!

As the Dingles try to hold it together, here’s everything that happened in Emmerdale tonight, Thursday October 17.

The village gathered for Zak’s funeral in Emmerdale tonight

As the Dingles prepared to give Zak the send off he very carefully planned, it was clear Cain was struggling more than the others. But Belle was also not coping and stayed with her dad alone when the others went to pick flowers.

Cain and Sam drove Zak’s body in the rusty old van to the village with the sounds of Rhinestone Cowboy blaring out of the stereo. The residents turned out – we wouldn’t say in force because there were more than a few missing – with even PC Swirling making an appearance to pay his respects. Zak was then carried into the pub for one last pint. At the pub everyone shared stories of Zak and fondly remembered him.

Things were tough for Cain as he struggled with his new role in the family (Credit: ITV)

    Cain found it hard

At the Woolie, Cain was reminded he was now official head of the family and he had to lead the way. But making any sort of speech was too much for him and all he could do was raise a toast to his dad.

One by one all the missing Dingles were mentioned, including Nate, who had never got back to anyone – suspicious, us? Yes! But we’ll save that for another time!

After a good-old sing song in the Woolie, Zak was drummed up the road to his final resting place. The Dingles gathered around his graveside and that’s when a mystery blonde, who had earlier been taking photos of Wishing Well, arrived, swigging whiskey.

Tina Dingle made no friends out of her family at the funeral (Credit: ITV)

    Tina turned up

“The one and only Tina Dingle,” Chas declared to the shock of the surrounding family. And Tina made no bones in making her presence felt, throwing insults at all of them one by one. She didn’t even recognise Belle! But it turned out she’s kept in touch with Mandy all these years.

Cain couldn’t cope with giving a speech at the graveside and rushed off. The other Dingles did their best to stay composed as they said their final goodbyes. And Belle decided to bury Zak with Lisa’s ashes so they could be together.

Meanwhile, Mandy had found out Tina’s secret: she’d been taking photos of the house because she’s there for her share. And she was determined she was going to get it. But when she started laying into Sam, Lydia stepped up – and pushed her into a puddle of mud! It was revealed Zak did make a will and left the house to Belle, Cain and Sam. And the fall exposed Tina’s ankle tag – so she’s definitely not whiter than white!

She was then taken away by the police, but declared: “This isn’t over.” So is that the last we’ll see of Tina? Or is another Dingle heading to the village to cause chaos? Whatever your thoughts, there’s no denying she’s brilliant casting – and definitely a Dingle.

Moira ‘fessed up as Cain spiralled

Moira admitted to Cain she had cancelled her operation because of the funeral. She insisted she needed to protect him, but Cain lost it and said he was failing everyone. When Sam referred to him as head of the family again, Cain broke down and said he couldn’t live up to that title.

Sam and Belle then sat together and were upset that the funeral hadn’t given them any closure. But they reasoned they had to sort Cain out, they had to keep the family together.

They question is, without Zak, can they?

    Also in Emmerdale tonight…

Caleb and Will continued to plot (Credit: ITV)
Caleb and Will continued to plot (Credit: ITV)

Ruby bought Caleb’s lies as he continued to plot

After spending the night in the B&B, Caleb was still struggling to appease Ruby. He also had other troubles as his business deal was set to fall apart. Jai was in his ear and we were left wondering why Emmerdale chose to bother with this storyline on tonight of all nights (or at all, if we’re honest).

After being sent off by Cain to make amends with Ruby, Caleb once again apologised – with a few more lies thrown in about what actually happened, of course. He accused Helen of calling Ruby all sorts of names and said he was protecting her from the insults. Oh Caleb, if ever there was a time to tell the truth, it’s now and you blew it. This will come back to bite you on the bum, mark our words.

The solicitor then called and flagged a payment made the morning Helen died. She’s looking into it and will report back – see, Caleb, we warned you now was the time to be honest…

Will and Kim continued to bicker in Emmerdale tonight

Will was avoiding Kim, who was feeling lonely. She asked Gabby to move back in, that’s how desperate she is!

Back at Home Farm there was more bickering between Kim and Will. We don’t know how many times we have to say it’s boring, but it really is.

Will decided to push Caleb a bit harder to get one over on Kim, but honestly this weird vendetta holds no interest at all.

  • Original Tina Dingle star Jacqueline Pirie now lives a very different life on the other side of the world

Original Tina Dingle star Jacqueline Pirie now lives a very different life on the other side of the world

Tina Dingle is back in Emmerdale after decades away, but the role has been recast. Tina is now played by Ackley Bridge and Brassic star Samantha Power.

Tina’s not been seen in the village since Christmas Day in 1996, when she left for the bright lights of London! Back then she was played by Jacqueline Pirie, who went on to star in Coronation Street as Linda Sykes.

Jacqueline waved goodbye to her soap career in 2001, and she’s now enjoying a whole new life on the other side of the world.

Here’s the lowdown on her life before and after Emmerdale.

    Jacqueline Pirie’s early life

Jacqueline was born in Stirling in Scotland and moved to Birmingham with her family when she was five.

She had a few roles on television, until in 1994, when she was just 19, she landed the role of Tina Dingle in Emmerdale.

Her time in Emmerdale was short, but memorable (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)

Who was Tina Dingle in Emmerdale?

Tina was the daughter of Zak and Nellie Dingle, making her the sister of Sam Dingle, and the late Ben and Butch Dingle. She’s also Cain and Belle’s half-sister, though as far as we know she’s never met Belle – and she’s hardly ever mentioned on screen.

She was best friends with her cousin, Mandy Dingle, whose first appearance in Emmerdale was at Tina’s doomed wedding to Luke McAllister.

    Tina and Luke McAllister

    Speaking of which!

Tina’s family were horrified when she seemed to hit it off with Luke McAllister, because they believed he was the man responsible for her brother Ben’s death in a fight.

Ben had a heart condition that killed him when Luke and he fought, but the Dingles always blamed Luke.

Much to the disgust of the Dingles, Tina grew close to Luke and the pair started a relationship.

    Wedding disaster

Tina announced she was pregnant and with the news of a baby, the family began to come round -  Nellie was especially excited that her daughter was going to be married to a doctor.

But when Tina and Luke got to the altar on their wedding day, Tina announced the whole thing was a fake. She didn’t want to marry Luke, and there was no baby. It had all been a complicated revenge plan. Ouch!

Humiliated Luke decided to leave, but not before he took Tina on a terrifying drive round the village in Dave Glover’s van. Tina managed to throw herself from the moving van just before Luke crashed, and died.

    Businesswoman Tina

Stricken with guilt after Luke’s death, Tina reinvented herself as a businesswoman, working for Frank Tate and starting a romance with Steve Marchant.

But Frank began to have feelings for Tina and proposed. She turned him down, but Frank wouldn’t take no for an answer and harassed her. Fed up with the unwanted attention, Tina left Emmerdale to live in London.

Who was Linda Sykes in Coronation Street?

In 1998, Jacqueline joined Coronation Street as machinist Linda Sykes.

She became one of Corrie’s most iconic characters, thanks to her romance and later marriage to factory boss and much older man, Mike Baldwin.

But Linda also fell for Mike’s son, Mark Redman, and they started an affair. As the wedding day approached, Linda chose Mike and ended things with Mark. But her lovestruck ex refused to give up. On the big day, he proposed to Linda as Mike waited in the church – and Linda said no.

After the ceremony, Mark revealed the truth to his shocked dad. But to his dismay, Mike threw Mark out and decided to make a go of it with Linda.

    What happened next?

Mike and Linda’s marriage wasn’t great – no surprise there! Mike was looking after his ex-wife Alma, who’d been diagnosed with cancer, and Linda had another affair.

When Linda rowed with Alma shortly before her death, Mike said he’d never forgive her and asked for a divorce.

Linda didn’t want to go, though, until Mike set her up by arranging for Mark to come back to the Street and then walking in on the cheating pair.

    Jacqueline’s new life!

After Jacqueline left Corrie, her life changed completely. She married fellow actor Simon Chadwick and settled down.

After deciding she didn’t enjoy the fame that came with life as a soap star she turned her hand to other ventures.

She began teaching, opening a drama school in her hometown of Stirling.

Then the couple and their family relocated to Canada, where she set up another branch of her acting school – the Jacqueline Chadwick Academy.

Emmerdale star Steve Halliwell: Multiple health struggles, stint in prison and homelessness – inside the actor’s life as soap says farewell to Zak Dingle

Emmerdale is this week paying tribute to the legendary Steve Halliwell, who played Zak Dingle on the ITV soap.

Steve died aged 77 in December 2023. Now Zak is having his farewell on screen. The episodes this week have been moving and emotional and fans have called the soap ‘respectful’ for the way they have handled Steve’s death.

It’s clear everyone on and off screen at Emmerdale, as well as millions of fans, will miss both Steve and Zak very much. But with the actor having been off screen for long stretches of time, viewers had already started to fear for Zak’s future before Steve passed away.

In real life, Steve underwent a secret health battle in 2018 after a mysterious absence from screens. And prior to this he had been open about his mental health struggles too.

Emmerdale star Steve Halliwell dies aged 77

The soap released a statement on December 15, 2023 confirming the Zak Dingle actor had died “peacefully”.

It said: “It is with deep sadness and a heavy heart that Emmerdale can confirm that Steve Halliwell, our beloved Zak Dingle, has peacefully passed away.

“All our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and loved ones through this very difficult time, and we’d request that their privacy is respected as they grieve for his loss.”

They continued: “Steve will forever be synonymous with Emmerdale. The proud defender and head of the Dingle family. Heart and humour in all he did, it has been and always will be impossible not to smile when you think of him.”

His family also shared a moving tribute.

“He went to sleep, peacefully with his loved ones around him,” they said.

“He was making us laugh to the end, the most amazing father and grandfather you could ever wish for, family was everything to him. We would like to thank the wonderful staff at St James Hospital and the Wheatfield Hospice for their love and kindness in his final days. He didn’t want sadness, just to rejoice in a life well lived.”

A cause of death has never been confirmed for Steve.

Emmerdale star Steve Halliwell and his ongoing health battles

Steve was absent from Emmerdale in 2018 due to health concerns. After five months off screen the actor explained why Zak had really been missing. He was rushed to hospital for a life-or-death operation on his heart.

The Sun Online revealed that the Lancashire-born actor had a pacemaker fitted in September 2018, after suffering serious heart problems.

At the time the actor told the newspaper’s website: “I’m back at work in a few weeks and feeling fitter than ever after having a pacemaker fitted in September. It’s done me the world of good and I feel fantastic.”

He went on to say how understanding and “brilliant” his employers had been, revealing: “Emmerdale has been brilliant throughout and really looked after me.

“I did have to spend some time in hospital and it was really funny to see the entire Dingle clan around my bed. Everyone has been so considerate and I know it sounds a bit of a cliché, but we really are one big happy family.”

Steve and his mental health demons

The actor made no secret of the fact he had suffered with his mental health in the past. In 2003, Steve took a break from Emmerdale as he checked into rehab to get help for his alcohol issues.

In 2014 he told The Mirror: “There’s depression, drinking and having to fight your way out of situations. I’ve lived all those things – and more.”

Steve had also experienced other struggles in his life. He told TV Times in a past interview: “Everything the Dingles had been through, I had too – trouble with the police, fighting, being evicted. And if there were any aspects of Zak’s life I hadn’t lived, I knew people who had.”

Before he won the role of Zak Dingle Steve was once homeless. He was also arrested for sleeping rough. He told the publication he was “so hungry and got very thin”.

Steve revealed: “Back then, it was illegal to be homeless and I was arrested for sleeping in an empty Government building.” He spent two weeks on remand in Ashford prison.

The actor was also arrested after a gang incident. He took the blame for a brick being thrown through an off-licence window. He then spent three months in a detention centre.

Worries for Zak Dingle in Emmerdale

Before Steve passed away in December, viewers had been concerned for Steve’s health. The character appeared less and less on screen and looked more and more frail.

Zak had spent much time in Scotland with granddaughter Debbie. He was last seen on screen back in June 2023 when he revealed his health was declining. Cain was the only one who knew about his dad’s health struggles after finding him on the floor unable to get up.

This sparked fears for Zak with fans commenting: “Zak is getting more and more frail,” and another adding: “Poor Zak’s a mere slip of a man compared to the beast he was when he first arrived in the village.”

A third viewer worried: “Zak looks extremely ill.”

    Zak’s death in Emmerdale

Despite his passing December 2023, Emmerdale waited to pay tribute to Steve Halliwell on screen. They are now honouring his life as the Dingles celebrate 30 years in the village.

Earlier this month Cain went to Scotland after learning his dad was ill. He returned on Monday October 14 saying Zak was feeling much better.

However moments after his return, Debbie called and revealed Zak had died. He had been out poaching that morning and told Debbie it was the best morning ever. Zak then fell asleep in his chair and didn’t wake up.

As Cain broke the news to the Dingles on Tuesday October 15, there was not a dry eye in the house. Many fans called it the ‘best episode ever’. Bravo Emmerdale, bravo.

  • As Charity takes Sarah on a true ‘Dingle experience’ – here’s what it takes to be a ‘proper Dingle’

As Charity takes Sarah on a true ‘Dingle experience’ – here’s what it takes to be a ‘proper Dingle’

The Dingle family are an integral part of Emmerdale. Well, without them, the village would be pretty much empty, and very, very quiet. Known for their criminal ways and fierce loyalty to one another, it takes a special type of person to risk getting on the wrong side of a Dingle.
Tonight in Emmerdale, Charity tried to give Sarah a ‘true Dingle experience’, when she took her out in a seemingly stolen sports car. This got us thinking, what is a ‘proper Dingle’?
Here’s everything you need to know about the Dingles in Emmerdale.

    All about the Dingle family

The Dingle family was first introduced in 1994, with Ben Dingle being the very first Dingle to arrive in the village. From then on, the Dingles have continued to expand and are now the biggest family in the Dales.
Many, many characters have married into the family, from Moira to Mackenzie. Dingle weddings are always a big occasion, with the entire family coming together. The latest Dingles to tie the knot are Mandy and Paddy – luckily, they won’t have to go through the hassle of changing their surnames.
The Dingles are known for causing chaos in the village and are very protective of another. While you can’t question their family loyalty, you can definitely question some of their actions.
So, what makes a proper, authentic Dingle?
The Dingle family watch Caleb drink from the welly

    Drink from ‘the welly’

Like many other families, the Dingles have their traditions. One of their non-negotiable traditions is drinking from ‘the welly’.

This occurs whenever someone new is welcomed into the Dingle family. They are made to drink from a rubber Wellington boot, while the other family members cheer them on.

The details behind the odd tradition are not known, but every new Dingle has been made to drink from the welly since they arrived in the Dales. From Caleb to Tracy, they’ve all taken a sip from the welly.

    The Dingle Court interrogates Caleb

    The Dingle Code

It’s often referred to as the ‘Dingle Code’ or ‘Dingle Rules’ in Emmerdale, but essentially the Dingles have a strict system they all follow. The rules are quite simple; you can lie, cheat, steal or worse, as long as it is not against another Dingle.

You must also never grass on another Dingle, especially not to the police. Should you break the Dingle Code, you’ll have to face the Dingle Court, or worse.

    The Dingle Court

The Dingle Court sees several members of the family come together to interrogate whichever Dingle has done something wrong. They may decide to banish or disown the member in question, but it is likely that they’ll eventually be forgiven and welcomed back into the fold.

Over the years many Dingles have had to face the court, including Caleb, Mandy, Vinny and Lydia. All have successfully been forgiven by the family, so the court isn’t quite as serious as it may initially seem.

Emmerdale usually airs weeknights on ITV at 7.30pm.

Classic Emmerdale usually airs every weekday on ITV3 at 6am and 6.30am, plus 1.40pm and 2.10pm.

  • The Dingle family tree: Everything you need to know about the biggest family in Emmerdale

The Dingle family tree: Everything you need to know about the biggest family in Emmerdale

The Dingle family are the largest and lairiest bloodline in Emmerdale. They burst onto our screens in 1994, a whole 22 years after the soap started.

However, the Dingles have actually been village residents for over 60 years and have lived in Wishing Well Cottage since 1965.

The clan is continually expanding and their family tree can be traced back more than 10 generations – now that’s a whole lot of Dingles!

As Mandy Dingle once famously said: “Being a Dingle has always been about blood.”

Loyalty is everything to this family, who live by their own set of rules, dubbed The Dingle Code. Break that and you’re well and truly out of the circle of trust.

Here is a closer look at the who’s who of the Dingle dynasty, how they’re related and their most memorable moments…

Emmerdale: The first of the Dingle family

The first known Dingle was Abraham, born in 1785. He had children Ebenezer, Harold and Nathaniel. Ebenezer went on to marry Elspeth and have sones Jacob and Methusalah Dingle.

Jacob then married Katherine and they welcomed Benidiah. He married Margaret and they had Isaac Dingle. Isaac was the father of Jonah Dingle, who married Dot Colton and had two sons, Jedediah and Bert.

It’s from Jedediah and Bert the Dingles we know and love today were produced.

Jedediah and Peg Dingle and their family in Emmerdale

Jedediah married Peg in 1946. They had six children: Albert, Zak, Shadrach, Ezra, Zebediah and Caleb. Zak, is of course, the most recognisable of these.

When Zak was eight-years old, he was told by Peg his father had died. Zak saw blood on the floor and assumed his mum had killed Jed. However they had just had a row that turned violent and Jed had walked out on the family.

Zak discovered the truth when Peg came clean in 2002. He tracked his father down who was bedridden and dying. Jed revealed there was a Dingle family fortune hidden in Chile and then died.

    Zak Dingle

Zachariah Bartholomew ‘Zak’ Dingle, played by Steve Halliwell, was the undisputable head of the Dingle clan for almost 30 years.

He arrived in the village on October 20 1994, but was already a notorious name due to his previous career as a bare-knuckled boxing champion.

A pig farmer by trade, Zak is dad to seven children. He and his formidable first wife Nellie Lynch had five – Nathan, the late Butch and Ben, as well as Sam and Tina.

In 1974, Zak cheated on Nellie with his sister-in-law Faith and fathered her son, Cain Dingle.

Zak also had a daughter, Belle Dingle, with his second wife Lisa Clegg.

He had a short-lived third marriage to Joanie Wright before reuniting with Lisa, whom he remained with until her death in 2019.

Actor Steve Halliwell, who portrayed Zak, sadly passed away in December 2023.

Zak’s absence has been explained that he’s living in Scotland, and his character is yet to be killed off.

    Lisa Dingle

Zak married Lisa Clegg on January 28 1998. It hadn’t been a smooth courtship after her ex-husband Barry Clegg had tried to blow up the Dingle home!

Lisa was the matriarch of the Dingle family in Emmerdale and mother figure to almost all of them.

Zak and Lisa were shocked when Lisa gave birth to their daughter Belle on Christmas Day 1998 having not known she was pregnant!

They faced many more obstacles during their life together and even divorced in 2016 when he had an affair with Joanie. But he soon reunited with Lisa and they were together until her death in 2019.

Lisa’s other storylines included her rape by friend Derek Benrose and her amyloidosis diagnosis that lead to her death on May 24 2019.

She has since appeared in voiceovers several times, most recently at daughter Belle’s wedding in February 2024.

Lisa was played by actress Jane Cox.

    Nathan Dingle

Nathan Dingle is the eldest son of Zak Dingle and Nellie Lynch. He’s never been seen on screen and is rarely spoken about.

It was once suggested that Nathan had shunned his working-class roots which had led to an estrangement between him and the Dingles.

    Butch Dingle

Francis Albert ‘Butch’ Dingle, played by Paul Loughran, was Zak and Nellie’s second son. He was given the childhood nickname ‘Butch’ by Zak, who believed his son was too sensitive.

Butch was a notorious bully and troublemaker during his early years in the village.

He fell desperately in love with his cousin Mandy Dingle, and the pair married in November 1998, but it later transpired Mandy had married Butch only for money.

Butch went on to meet his soulmate Emily Wylie, but tragedy struck in March 2000 when he was fatally injured in a bus crash. Butch got his last wish and married Emily on his deathbed.

He was buried next to his brother, Ben, who had died six years previously.

    Ben Dingle

Benedict Alan ‘Ben’ Dingle was the first Dingle to be seen on screen. A real chip off the old block, Ben was a troublemaker and often on the wrong side of the law.

He met an untimely end in 1994 when he was killed after a brawl with the local doctor’s son, Luke McAllister.

Ben was later found to have a heart defect but that didn’t stop the Dingles blaming Luke for his death.

Ben’s sister Tina even went as far as convincing Luke she wanted to marry him – just so she could jilt him at the altar in an act of revenge!

    Sam Dingle

Samuel Jonah ‘Sam’ Dingle, played by James Hooton, is the third son of Zak and Nellie and now the longest-serving Dingle.

He arrived in the village in February 1995 straight from the young offenders institute.

More gentle and naive than his brothers, Sam has often found himself dragged into their dodgy schemes and has spent time in prison for his crimes.

In 2005, he embarked on a relationship with farmer Alice Wilson and the following year couple welcomed baby son Samson. Tragedy struck when Alice was diagnosed with terminal cancer and Sam helped his wife die.

Sam struggled with life as a single dad, but got his happy ending when he met Lydia Hart.

    Lydia Dingle

Sam and Lydia married in 2020 and celebrated afterwards with a good old fashioned Dingle knee’s up.

Their relationship has survived much trauma, including the revelation that she had given birth to a stillborn baby and buried his body when she was just a teen.

Lydia then reconnected with the baby’s father, Craig Reed, in 2023. But in horrifying scenes, Craig raped her. Sam has supported her throughout and they have grown stronger as a couple.

    Samson Dingle

The only son of Sam, 18-year-old Samson has proved himself to be trouble. He got Amelia Spencer pregnant then refused to have anything to do with the baby. The only reason he then got involved was to blackmail cousin Noah out of money.

He then took Craig’s side when Lydia was raped, desperate not to believe his tech hero was no good. Although he eventually supported Lydia, the betrayal stung.

Currently he has framed Matty Barton for stabbing him. Trans Matty is terrified in prison and the family are divided as they try to get Samson to tell the truth. Will he?

    Tina Dingle

Tina Dingle, played by Jacqueline Pirie, is Zak and Nellie’s youngest child and only daughter.

She arrived in the village in December 1994 and set about seducing Luke McAllister, who she believed had killed her brother, Ben.

Tina convinced Luke she was carrying his baby then persuaded him to sell his prize possessions to fund their wedding.

It was all a con though, and on the day of the nuptials Tina jilted Luke, who died a few days later in a car crash.

Tina then caught the attention of Home Farm millionaire Frank Tate, who proposed to her on more than one occasion.

But a life as lady of the manor wasn’t for Tina and she departed the Dales on Christmas Day 1996.

She pretty much hasn’t been heard of since.

    Belle Dingle

Tinkerbelle Lisa ‘Belle’ King (née Dingle), played by Eden Taylor-Draper, is Zak’s youngest and the only child of his second wife Lisa Clegg.

She made an unexpected arrival to the Dales on Christmas Day 1998 when Lisa gave birth in a pigsty – having not even realised she was pregnant.

Belle’s life has been filled with drama and tragedy ever since.

She’s fallen down a mineshaft, had an affair with a married man and accidentally killed her best friend Gemma Andrews, which sparked major mental health problems and led Belle to be diagnosed with schizophrenia.

Belle’s world was shattered by the death of her beloved mum Lisa in 2019.

In 2024 Belle married vet Thomas King, but has become the victim of her husband’s coercive control.

Head of the Dingle family in Emmerdale: Cain Dingle

Cain Dingle, played by Jeff Hordley, is the son of Zak Dingle and Faith Dingle (nee Miligan) and the product of their extra marital affair.

He grew up believing that Faith’s husband Shadrach Dingle was his father, only to discover it was actually his uncle Zak.

Cain has numerous half-brothers and sisters via his father. From his late mum Faith’s side, he has sister Chas Dingle and brother Caleb Miligan.

His list of cousins is extensive – and his on/off romantic relationship with one in particular, Charity Dingle, is legendary.

Cain‘s been married to farmer Moira Dingle since 2014.

He’s also a father of four, by four different women.

He and Charity have one daughter, Debbie Dingle, who was born when her parents were teenagers.

Cain has sons Nate Robinson and Kyle Winchester from previous flings, and he and Moira share Isaac Dingle.

    Moira Dingle

Cain’s wife, Moira, might not be a Dingle by blood, but she’s certainly part of the family. Moira, played by Natalie J Robb, is one of Emmerdale’s most popular characters.

She came to the village in July 2009, when she and husband John purchased Butler’s Farm from the newly-divorced Andy Sugden.

On the outside, the Bartons were a solid couple, but it wasn’t long before Moira found herself unable to resist the charms of a certain Cain Dingle.

Their affair ended Moira’s marriage to John, who then sadly perished in a car crash. After John’s untimely death, Moira reunited with Cain and went on to marry him in 2014.

Moira and Cain’s marriage has survived betrayals on both sides but they remain one of soap’s most popular partnerships.

    Nate Robinson

Cain’s eldest son Nate was born on April 27 1991. Cain didn’t even know of his existence until he arrived in the village on April 25 2019 out for revenge. Even then, he didn’t tell Cain who he really was.

Played by Jurrell Carter, Nate got a job as a farmhand, seduced Moira and had an affair with her to pay back his dad for abandoning him. However despite Nate’s mother, Cara Robinson trying to get in touch with Cain, it turned out Faith Dingle had intercepted all correspondence. She revealed it had been because Shadrach was racist and she was trying to protect them.

Cain and Nate eventually began tentatively forming a father/son relationship.

Quite the ladies’ man, Nate eventually settled down with Tracy Metcalfe. They had a baby together, but Tracy’s battle with postnatal depression left them struggling. Nate cheated and she left. However they reunited and married in July 2023.

But just months later Tracy began an affair with Nate’s uncle, Caleb, and it signalled the end of their marriage.

    Kyle Winchester

Cain’s son by Amy Wyatt, Kyle was born on December 1 2011 in the cemetery. Cain had told her to have an abortion after their one-night stand and 17-year-old Amy kept her pregnancy hidden until she gave birth.

She believed Kyle was stillborn so wrapped him in a blanket and left him in a phone box. But Kyle was found and taken to hospital before being reunited with his mum.

Amy felt too young to be a mum though, and gave Kyle up for adoption. His adoptive parents died in 2013 and he was left in the care of his grandmother Joanie Wright. Financial difficulties caused her to call on the Dingles for help.

Cain paid her to stay away, but they ended up moving in with Zak and Lisa at Wishing Well.

Amy and Cain now share custody, but Cain nearly lost everything when Kyle shot and killed Al Chapman. Cain took the blame for his son and served time in prison until Kyle confessed.

Shadrach Dingle and his family in Emmerdale

Shadrach was the second eldest of the Dingle brothers. He was played by Andy Devine, who died in real life in January 2022.

He first appeared on March 30 2000 and stayed with the show until his character was killed off on July 23 2010.

Shadrach was lazy, selfish, useless and an alcoholic. He was dad to Chas and brought Cain up as his own son, despite him being Zak’s.

Shadrach used to beat Cain when he was growing up, though he never laid a finger on Chas. He was also aggressive with wife Faith, who ended up leaving him – and her kids – when she couldn’t take any more.

He also had daughter Genesis after an affair with Shirley Pascoe. But Shirley died in childbirth and devastated, he put Gennie up for adoption.

Shadrach was diagnosed with liver failure and a perforated ulcer in 2010. He was told he must stop drinking or he would die.

But Shadrach couldn’t give up the demon drink and ended up passing out in a river. His official cause of death was drowning, but the autopsy confirmed he would have died hours later anyway due to a ruptured liver.

    Chas Dingle

Chasity ‘Chas’ Dingle, played by Lucy Pargeter, is the daughter of the late Shadrach Dingle and Faith Dingle.

She’s the half-sister of Cain Dingle, Caleb Miligan and the late Genesis ‘Gennie’ Walker. Chas is also a cousin to Charity, Sam, Marlon and Belle Dingle.

As the much-loved manager of The Woolpack Chas plays a pivotal part in village life and has lived in Emmerdale for 22 years and counting.

She’s been married three times, her most recent being to village vet Paddy Kirk.

Chas is fiercely protective of her family, but hasn’t always been a model parent. She gave birth to eldest child, son Aaron, when she was just 14-years-old and the pair have had a tumultuous relationship.

Chas sadly lost her first daughter Grace in 2018 when she was just minutes old. She welcomed a second daughter, Eve, in 2019.

    Aaron Dingle

Aaron Dingle, played by Danny Miller, is the only son of Chas Dingle and Gordon Livesey.

He experienced a traumatic upbringing and suffered terrible abuse at the hands of his father.

There have been many dark moments in Aaron’s life. These include an attempted suicide, dealing with the suicide of his first boyfriend, Jackson Walsh, covering up the death of Katie Sugden and the imprisonment of his husband Robert Sugden.

Aaron was reunited with estranged half-sister Liv Flaherty, but tragedy struck when she was killed off during the show’s 50th anniversary episodes.

Chas fell pregnant by surprise when dating Paddy. However at the 20-week scan the awful news was delivered that their baby girl had bilateral renal agenesis. It meant her kidneys and bladder wouldn’t develop and she wouldn’t survive long after birth.

Chas decided to carry the pregnancy to term and gave birth on October 1, 2018. Baby Grace died in her arms just 29 minutes later. Chas and Paddy have never forgotten their first daughter and regularly visit her grave.
