The love story of Val and Eric Pollard: Cheating, HIV diagnosis and tragic death

Val and Eric Pollard in Emmerdale had both been round the block a few times when they found one another. With several spouses, ex-partners, kids and grandkids between them, it looked like this was one relationship that was doomed before it even began.

But instead Val and Eric became one of Emmerdale’s best-loved couples of all time, and Eric’s heartfelt eulogy at Val’s funeral left fans sobbing!

    Here’s their story.

Early days for Val and Eric

Pollard was a ruthless, manipulative conman when Valerie arrived in the village. He’d been married to Elizabeth, who died in the plane crash, letting Eric cash in on her life insurance. And it turned out he was still married to his first wife, Eileen, when he married Elizabeth!

He’d also tied the knot unsuccessfully with Dee and Gloria.

But when Val Lambert arrived in the village, the pair hit it off! Well, eventually. After Val had a steamy affair with her former brother-in-law Rodney Blackstock, only to end up being disowned by most of her family when the affair was revealed.

And when she admitted that Rodney was also the biological father of her son, Paul, her family relationships got even trickier!

With things hard for Val, she and Eric went into business together, running a fabric company. The sparks flew and they were soon enjoying a romance.

Obstacles in Val and Eric’s way

But of course, nothing’s ever simple in Emmerdale, and there were all sorts of obstacles in Val and Eric’s way. First there was Val’s ex – Jimmy Pepper – showing up. He demanded Val pay him all the money he’d given her over the years when he thought he was Paul’s dad. Val embezzled the cash from the pub and sister Diane dobbed her in to the police.

Then there was Eric’s long-lost son David Metcalfe showing up. It took Eric a while to believe David was who he said he was, but they eventually forged a bond.

    Tying the knot

Eventually though, Val and Eric tied the knot in a very Val ceremony, and they settled down to life together.

They fostered troubled teenager Amy Wyatt and things were good. Until Amy got pregnant, and decided to give the little boy – Kyle – up for adoption.

Val didn’t want the baby to be given up, and she thought Eric had encouraged Amy to have Kyle adopted. The pair split, Val emptied the bank account and headed off to Portugal.

    Missing Val

Thinking Val wasn’t returning, Eric began a romance with Brenda Walker. When Val came home she was FUMING. She marched into the pub and demanded that David help her win Eric back. When David said no, Val attacked him! But David’s wife, Alicia, got involved, punched Val in the face and got sentenced to a year in prison for assault.

The villagers all shunned Val, but she eventually won them over – and won Eric back!

Despite Val Pollard [CHARLIE HARDWICK] being terrified of telling Eric Pollard [CHRIS CHITTELL], she is determined to face up to her fears.

    HIV Positive

In 2014, Val got bad news when a fling from her time in Portugal, Ian Chamberlain (played by Robert Cavanah, who’s currently playing DS Foy), arrived in the village. He told her he was HIV positive and warned her she could be, too.

Once more Val and Eric split, this time thanks to her odd behaviour. Eric had a drunken one-night stand with Val’s sister, Diane, before the pair reconciled and Val told him the truth. Meanwhile, Victoria had spilled the beans to Diane, who’d got herself treatment, just in case.

When Val’s HIV status was outed by Jacob, things really fell apart. Eric and Val split, and Val spiralled into destructive behaviour.

Thankfully, they reconciled once more. With Val in trouble for committing fraud, and Eric having suffered a heart attack, she came up with a brilliant plan to fake her own death.

Val Pollard played by Charley Webb lies in the rubble of the collapsed hall of mirrors maze, surrounded by debris and broken mirror glass.
Val’s death was brutal and shocking (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)

    Val’s tragic death

In 2015, Pete Barton and Debbie Dingle had a fairground in the village as part of their wedding celebrations. Val was in the hall of mirrors with Diane, having been locked in by Eric, who was fed up with their arguing. When an explosion at the haulage yard caused by Chrissie White, hit a helicopter, tragedy struck. The helicopter plunged into the fairground, trapping Diane and Val.

Diane was rescued first but Val was stabbed by a shard of broken glass. Her death was shocking as she defiantly stared up at the glass dangling overhead and declared: “Come on then, do your worst.”

    Eric’s heartbreak

The aftermath of Val’s death was heartbreaking for poor Eric. Because Val had thought about faking her death, it took a while for him to accept she was really gone.

At Val’s funeral he gave a tearjerking eulogy, saying “Without her I am lost in the dark again”.

    SOB!

Eric’s since found happiness with Brenda, who’s supporting him through his Parkinson’s diagnosis.

14 of the most memorable deaths in Emmerdale – murder, sinister happenings and sudden departures

Emmerdale must be a dangerous place to live given the amount of folk who’ve met an unfortunate end. Over the years, there’s been murders, death by misadventure and falling victim to freak accidents and natural disasters.

But we always remember those who were killed off in sensational style, or had a heartbreaking goodbye.

Here are 14 of the most memorable deaths to have occurred in Emmerdale…

    Dave Glover in hospital

    Emmerdale deaths: Dave Glover

Dave Glover was the heartthrob of Emmerdale back in the mid 90s. The floppy-haired farmhand was also something of a ladies man, but Dave’s fateful error was falling for Kim Tate. The frisky pair had an affair behind Kim’s husband Frank’s back. Then Kim got pregnant and didn’t know who the father was.

Baby James was born in 1996, and Dave believed he was the boy’s daddy (it later turned out James was Frank’s). The lovers decided to run away together, but never got that far after a fire broke out in Home Farm.

Dave battled through the flames to save James, and was able to pass the tot through a window. Unfortunately, Dave was not so lucky. He succumbed to his injures on Boxing Day, 1996.

Kim was heartbroken and blamed Frank for Dave’s death. But she didn’t have to wait long for her husband to slip off the mortal coil…

    Emmerdale deaths: Frank Tate

Frank’s dramatic death at the hands of wife Kim, remains one of the greatest exits in soap history. It was 1997, and the year the Tates marriage really turned toxic.

The wealthy haulage boss had tried to have Kim killed as revenge for her affair with Dave Glover. She responded by hatching a plan to fake her death and have Frank framed for murder.

Frank was sent to prison for a while, but then Kim turned up at Home Farm very much alive. The shock of seeing his supposedly dead wife caused Frank (who already had a dodgy ticker) to suffer a fatal heart attack.

He passed away on the living room of Home Farm, while cold-hearted Kim watched on, refusing to call for help. As a final insult, Kim whipped out her compact mirror to check Frank had stopped breathing before reapplying her make up!

    Rachel Hughes

Poor Rachel was never a good judge when it came to men. There was her marriage to Chris Tate, her affair with Jack Sugden, and her failure to realise she was dating a killer.

Rachel began a romance with teacher, Graham Clark and thought she’d met the one. They even planned to marry. But what Rachel didn’t realise was that Graham had murdered his first wife and made it look like suicide.

The sinister truth finally dawned on Rachel while the couple were out walking in the Dales on May 11, 1999. She confronted Graham over her suspicions and a row ensued. Graham couldn’t allow his dark secret to be revealed, so he decided Rachel had to be silenced. He pushed her over a cliff and Jack later found her lifeless body.

Graham got his comeuppance when he was killed in a car crash a year later.

    Sarah Sugden

Jack Sugden’s second wife, Sarah met a horrific end when she was burnt alive in a barn explosion.

At the time of Sarah’s death she and Jack were separated after she’d left him for 19-year-old, Richie Carter. But Sarah soon realised the grass wasn’t greener.

The Sugden family farm was also in peril. Faced with losing his home, Sarah and Jack’s son Andy decided to burn down one of their barns for the insurance money.

He carried out his foolish plan and doused the barn with petrol. But what Andy didn’t realise is that Sarah and Richie were hiding behind the hay bales having crisis talks about their future.

The blaze quickly took hold, and while Richie was able to flee the flames, Sarah wasn’t so fortunate. She went out in a massive fireball.

Chris Tate killed himself and framed estranged wife Charity Dingle for murder in Emmerdale

    Chris Tate

Cunning Chris Tate masterminded every detail of his death, which occurred on September 17, 2003.

After discovering he had an inoperable brain tumour, Chris spied an opportunity for revenge. He plotted to end his own life and frame his estranged wife, Charity Dingle, for murder in the process.

Having made all the arrangements, Chris set his plan in motion. He lured Charity to Home Farm on the pretence of discussing their divorce, before downing a glass of whisky, laced with poison.

Seconds later, Chris carked it, and just as he’d intended Charity was sent down for murder. She was later able to prove her innocence, which must have had Chris turning in his grave.

    Emmerdale deaths: Tricia Dingle

Bubbly barmaid Tricia was a victim of a terrible storm that struck the village on New Year’s Eve 2003.

Tricia was making her way over to The Woolpack when a bolt of lightening struck the pub. This caused an upstairs window to shatter and the pub’s chimney came crashing down on top of Tricia.

She was rushed to hospital, where she was kept on life support for a week. Heartbroken Marlon Dingle kept vigil at his wife’s bedside, but her injuries were not survivable and she went into cardiac arrest.

Tricia’s organs were donated to charity, which provided her loved ones with a small comfort.

    Alice Dingle

Alice’s passing on July 31, 2006  was one the saddest days in Emmerdale history.

The previous year, Alice had been diagnosed with cancer while pregnant with son, Samson. She refused doctor’s advice to have an abortion and waited until Samson was born to start chemotherapy.

Unfortunately the treatment was not effective and Alice was told she was terminally ill. As her illness progressed, Alice decided she wanted to die on her own terms. But she was too weak to take her own life.

In the end, her husband Sam helped Alice on her way by administering an overdose of morphine. She slipped away peacefully in his arms at Wishing Well Cottage moments later.

Mark Wylde after he was shot by wife Natasha in Emmerdale

    Mark Wylde

Mark Wylde had it all – wealth, good looks, a beautiful family… oh and a secret wife and son he’d never told anyone about.

It turned out Mark was, in fact, Daniel Lamb. 20 years previously he had abandoned his pregnant wife, Faye and moved to France under a new identity. This meant his second marriage, to wife Natasha, was bigamous.

Natasha was sickened to discover the truth, but there was worse to come when their daughter, Maisie, revealed she’d been sleeping with Faye’s son, Ryan. Mark was forced to admit Maisie and Ryan were half-siblings, and unsurprisingly no one took the news well.

Disowned by his family, Mark decided to end it all. He wrote a suicide note and headed out to the woods with a shotgun. But Natasha wasn’t far behind. Refusing to let Mark to take the coward’s way out, she took the weapon out of his hands and fired a bullet into chest, killing him instantly. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, eh?

Cameron Murray during the Woolpack siege of 2013

    Emmerdale deaths: Cameron Murray

Serial killer Cameron’s reign of terror came to a spectacular end on October 17, 2013.

Cam had been imprisoned for the murders of Carl King, Alex Moss and Gennie Walker, but he escaped and went on the run. With scores to settle, Cameron made his way back to the village in the middle of a torrential rainstorm.

Armed with a shotgun, Cameron held a number terrified locals hostage at The Woolpack. These included his former lovers, Debbie Dingle and Chas Dingle.

The siege ended down in the pub’s flooded cellar as Cameron attempted to drown Chas, Debbie and Marlon. Sadly (for him), Cameron grabbed hold of a live lightbulb and was electrocuted to death. Did no one ever teach him water and electricity don’t mix?

Katie Sugden catches Robron kissing in Emmerdale

    Katie Sugden

Katie’s death was a case of manslaughter at the hands of her brother-in-law and arch-nemesis, Robert Sugden.

The pair had been secret lovers back in the day, but their romance had turned sour. When Robert returned to the village in 2014, he embarked on an affair with Aaron Dingle.

Wily Katie had worked out Rob was cheating on his fiancée, Chrissie White, but didn’t know who with. She finally found out on February 5, 2015 after catching Robron in a passionate clinch at Wylie’s barn.

Katie threatened to wreck Robert’s wedding day by exposing his adultery, but he refused to let her leave. When Katie tried to make her escape, Robert pushed her over and the barn’s floor gave way. She crashed through two storeys of wood and glass and was killed on impact.

Robert and Aaron then disposed of any incriminating evidence so it looked as if Katie had died by accident. Which she did. Sort of.

Val Pollard died in the mirror maze in Emmerdale
Val’s death was as extra as the lady herself (Credit: ITV/Shutterstock)

    Val Pollard

A character as iconic as Val deserved an unforgettable exit. And that’s what she got.

The fifth Mrs Pollard was one of the unlucky victims of the village fete disaster in 2015. Val was trapped inside a mirror maze alongside sister Diane Sugden after a helicopter crash caused the amusement to collapse.

Diane was safely rescued from the wreckage, but the emergency crew could not reach Val. As she lay there unable to move, Val could see a jagged shard of glass hanging above her. She lit a cigarette in a final act of defiance and declared “I’m Val” as the glass fell and impaled her.

A few days after her gruesome death, Val appeared as a ghost to say one last goodbye to husband, Eric.

Moira tries to wake up daughter Holly who has died overnight

    Emmerdale deaths: Holly Barton

Holly’s death from a drug overdose was one of those OMG moments fans will never forget.

September 26, 2016 started out as just another ordinary day at Butlers Farm. Moira took a cup of tea up to Holly, who was in bed after a night out. At first Moira thought her daughter was just asleep, but sadly she wasn’t. Holly had succumbed to a fatal heroin overdose and it was too late to save her.

What made Holly’s death particularly shocking was that it hadn’t been announced actress Sophie Powles was leaving the soap. So no one knew until the episode aired that Holly was being killed off.

It was another stroke of genius from the Emmerdale writers, and Natalie J Robb‘s portrayal of Moira’s agony was award-worthy.

Faith Dingle died in Cain Dingle's arms in Emmerdale
Faith’s tragic end broke fan’s hearts (Credit: ITV)

    Faith Dingle

Oh Faith. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house when Cain and Chas’s cancer-stricken mum died.

The Dingle matriarch fought a courageous battle against the disease and made the decision to end her suffering. She made peace with the idea and said her goodbyes to her loved ones.

Faith proceeded to take an overdose of morphine, but was interrupted by Cain’s arrival. He tried to take his mum to hospital, but after realising it was what she wanted, Cain held Faith in his arms until she took her last breath.

It was a highly emotional ending for a dearly loved character.

    Al Chapman looks villainous
Evil Al was killed by young Kyle Winchester (Credit: ITV)

    Al Chapman

Last, but by no means least was Al Chapman, the character who became Emmerdale’s 100th on-screen death.

Al’s immoral antics made him unpopular with the locals, but it was his affair with married Chas Dingle that proved to be his undoing. Cain discovered Al was the reason Chas had missed their mum Faith’s final moments and wanted revenge.

He lured Al to a barn, where he was waiting with a shotgun to scare him out of the village. But as a violent altercation ensued, Al ended up taking a bullet.

It looked as if Cain was the killer, but flashback scenes it was his 10-year-old son, Kyle who’d actually pulled the trigger. Cain took the rap and served time for the youngster’s crime, but was released when Kyle told the police the truth.

And as for Al? Well perhaps Kyle did us all a favour. Good riddance to bad rubbish!

  • The Pollard family tree in Emmerdale: Eric Pollard and all his wives!

The Pollard family tree in Emmerdale: Eric Pollard and all his wives!

When you think of Emmerdale, you think of Eric Pollard and his family. As the longest-serving character in the soap, Eric has been a resident of the village for nearly 40 years.

He arrived in the Dales on September 30, 1986, and quickly made his mark as a villainous schemer.

Over the years, Eric’s family have entered the picture. To date, Eric has been married five times. His fifth wife, and one true love Valerie Pollard, left him a widower after she died in 2015.

Eric’s son, David Metcalfe, also spent 17 years in the Dales, and gave Eric his two grandchildren, Amba and Theo.

Here’s all you need to know about the Pollard clan.

Eric Pollard – head of the family in Emmerdale

The Pollard family is headed by the one and only, Mr Eric Pollard. The village veteran is played by Chris Chittell, who’s the longest-serving actor on Emmerdale.

Eric was introduced to the soap in 1986 and was only meant to stay for 12 episodes. However, his immoral antics were an instant hit with viewers and he was soon made a permanent character.

From the off, Eric made himself unpopular with the locals. The sly and cunning schemer was always up to no good, whether it was committing theft, fraud, or even bigamy!

Eric has always had a taste for alcohol and an eye for the ladies. He’s had five marriages, and plenty of flings in between. One of these resulted in his son David, who was born in 1981. Eric knew nothing of David’s existence until he rocked up in the village in 2006.

The pair made up for lost time and grew close. Whilst far from a model parent, Eric has proved himself to have a paternal instinct. As well as being there for David, he and wife number five, Val, took in wayward teen Amy Wyatt (now Barton).

Time has mellowed Eric, that and his ailing health. In 2023, Eric was dealt a shattering blow when he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Thankfully, there’s still life in the old dog yet, and Eric is being supported by his friends and neighbours.

David Metcalfe – the son of Eric Pollard

David Metcalfe is the son of Eric Pollard, father to Amba and Theo Metcalfe, and stepfather to Jacob Gallagher.

He was the product of an affair between Eric and a lady called Lydia. Eric had walked out on Lydia when she was pregnant, but didn’t know about David’s existence. When David revealed his true identity, Eric demanded he take a DNA test. This confirmed he was his son.

David settled in the Dales and went on to open David’s Shop, which is located in the heart of the village. Much like his father, David was a ladies’ man. The David Beckham doppelganger’s conquests included Delilah Dingle, Jasmine Thomas, Nicola King (before she was married to Jimmy) and Leyla Harding.

David was married three times. Twice to Leyla’s sister Alica Harding, and once to Tracy Shankley, who supported him through his battle against testicular cancer in 2015.

He has three children. His stepson, Jacob came into David’s life in 2010 after he started dating his biological mum, Leyla.

His daughter Amba was conceived during a fling with her mum, Priya Sharma. And David’s son Theo is the product of his ill-fated romance with schoolteacher Maya Stepney.

Maya was sent to prison for grooming Jacob, and baby Theo arrived on the doorstep on Christmas Day 2019. The paternity of the tot was in question, but a DNA test confirmed David was the daddy.

David started an on/off relationship with Victoria Sugden, but was heartbroken to discover she’d fallen for Jacob. Devastated by the betrayal, David quit the village in November 2023, taking Amba and Theo with him.

    Eileen Pollock

Eileen Pollock was Eric’s first wife. They married in 1964 and had already split by the time Eric came to Emmerdale. She appeared in seven episodes of the soap in 1994 and was played by actress Arbel Jones.

During their time together, Eileen and Eric had had a son, Edward, who was tragically stillborn. Eric and Eileen parted ways a few years after Edward’s passing but never actually divorced. Eric then changed his surname to Pollard in a deliberate move to stop Eileen from finding him.

However, Eileen discovered Eric’s whereabouts after reading about the death of his new wife, Elizabeth Feldmann, in the plane crash of December 1993.

In March 1994, Eileen turned up in the village. She threatened to expose Eric as a bigamist unless he paid her off. Eileen got what she wanted and left the village, never to be seen again.

    Elizabeth Pollard

Elizabeth Pollard (nee Jeffries) was the second wife of Eric. She came to the village in 1990 along with her two children from a previous marriage – Michael and Elsa.

A love triangle formed between Elizabeth, Eric and Alan Turner, but it was Pollard who won her heart. The couple became husband and wife in October 1992, but Elizabeth had no idea that Eric was still married to Eileen.

Elizabeth thought she was the woman who could tame Eric. But she then found out he was planning to commit fraud and frame her son for the crime. She threatened to report Eric to the police, but didn’t get the chance after being killed when an airliner exploded over the village.

Speculation was rife amongst the locals that Eric had murdered his wife. It was concluded in 2011 Elizabeth had died after being struck by falling debris.

    Dee de la Cruz

Diwata Margharita ‘Dee’ de la Cruz (previously Pollard) was the third wife of Eric Pollard. The couple met when Eric made a trip to the Far East in 1997 and ended up falling for Filipino student Dee.

Following a whirlwind romance, Eric popped the question and then Dee followed him back to the village. Their unlikely courtship raised a few eyebrows amongst the locals, but it seemed like the real deal when Eric and Dee married in May 1997.

Their union didn’t last long due to Eric’s possessive behaviour. When a letter arrived saying Dee’s mother was ill, Eric thought it was a scam to get money out of him. He hid the letter, preventing Dee from getting the chance to see her mother – who died shortly afterwards.

When Dee discovered what Eric had done she left him and the Dales. Their marriage was annulled.

    Gloria Weaver

Eric’s fourth wife was veterinary surgery receptionist Gloria Weaver. She was introduced to Emmerdale in May 2000 as a member of Reverend Ashley Thomas’s congregation. Gloria disapproved of Ashley’s relationship with Bernice Blackstock and was very vocal in making it known.

Eric and Gloria became involved when he purchased some of her old antiques and the pair hit it off. After their marriage in 2002, Gloria set her sights on a career in politics.
Her ruthless nature became apparent when she told Eric to bed fellow councillor Glynis Hardy to increase his chances of becoming mayor.

Eric did as he was told and was duly elected, but when his dalliance with Glynis became public knowledge, Gloria refused to stand by her man.

She stood for election and won her own seat, then relocated to London and began an affair with her young male colleague.

Gloria was caught out by Steph Stokes and forced to tell Eric she’d been unfaithful. He responded by throwing her out on the street. As a final act of revenge, Gloria faked her own death and went off to start a new life elsewhere.

    Val Lambert

The love of Eric’s life was his fifth wife, the late Valerie ‘Val’ Pollard (nee Lambert), played by Charlie Hardwick.

Val was an irrepressible force – outspoken, opinionated, with a huge lust for life and tendency for troublemaking. She was the younger sister of Diane Sugden and mother of Paul and Sharon Lambert.

Eric more than met his match in Val and their chemistry was an instant hit with the viewers. The couple set up their own fabrics company, but their relationship ran into trouble when Eric started putting his political career ahead of Val.

They reconciled, married in 2008 and purchased The Grange B&B. Two years on, Val and Eric took on teenage tearaway Amy Wyatt.

The Pollards’ marriage hit the rocks not long after and Val fled to Portugal. She returned with a little more than a suntan after finding out she’d contracted HIV from her holiday fling, Ian Chamberlain.

Val’s diagnosis caused her and Eric to split up for a while, but they found their way back to one another and soon started cooking up new scams.

In 2015, Val planned to fake her own death after she helped Carly Hope and her dad Bob commit fraud. The idea was for Val to ‘die’ to avoid going to prison, then she and Eric could start a new life abroad together.

Unfortunately Val never got that far when she was one of the villagers killed off in the Summer Fete storyline of August 2015.

Val met her maker in the Hall of Mirrors after being impaled by a shard of glass – a gloriously gothic exit for her character. She rose from the dead a few days later, appearing as a ghost to bid a final farewell to Eric.

    Jacob Gallagher

Although not biologically Eric’s grandson, for all intents and purposes these two are close family. Jacob, played by Joe-Warren Plant is the adopted son of David and calls Pollard grandad.

Eric has been by Jacob’s side supporting him through lives ups and downs – including his affair with teacher Maya Stepney. Although Pollard and Jacob fell out when the young Gallagher started dating Victoria Sugden, they have reconciled.

Jacob is now supporting Eric through his Parkinson’s diagnosis and is there for his grandad every step of the way.

    Amba Metcalfe

Amba Metcalfe is David Metcalfe’s daughter from his relationship with Priya Kotecha and Eric Pollard’s granddaughter. The character was played by Ava Jayasinghe.

She was born in May 2014 on the back seat of a car after Priya went into labour six weeks early. Amba was rushed to hospital and diagnosed with sepsis, but thankfully made a full recovery.

The youngster left the Dales in January 2023 when Priya accepted a job offer in London. Dad David went to join the family when he departed the village in November 2023.
